Fort Riley, in conjunction with the Fourth District, State of Kansas, Veterans of Foreign Wars and VFW Auxiliary, will host a Wreaths Across America ceremony at the Fort Riley post cemetery, 193 Huebner Rd, Dec. 16 at 11 a.m.

Col. Terry R. Tillis, Deputy Commanding Officer – Maneuver, 1st Infantry Division, will make remarks during the ceremony. Service representatives will place ceremonial wreaths for each of the armed forces, Merchant Marines, Gold Star families and POWs/MIAs.&nbsp; Afterward, wreaths will be placed on individual military gravesites in the cemetery.

Wreaths Across America holds simultaneous observances at Arlington National Cemetery and in more than 3,400 locations in all 50 states and 24 national veteran cemeteries on foreign soil. The organization’s motto is “Remember, Honor, Teach.”

MARION COUNTY —Two people died in an accident just after 11a.m. Wednesday in Marion County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Hyundia Elantra driven by&nbsp;Jessica R.&nbsp;Henson, 43, Wamego, was was eastbound on U.S. Highway 56 at 250th Street.

The driver failed to stop and rear-ended a 2017 Freightliner semi driven by Trevor L.&nbsp; Stevens, 21, Emporia, who was stopped at a KDOT work zone waiting on the flagger.

Henson and a child passenger were pronounced dead at the scene and were transported to&nbsp;Yazel-Megli Funeral Home. The KHP released no additional details on the child. Juvenile records are protected data, according to the KHP.

Stevens was not injured. The KHP had incomplete seat belt usage information.

Geary USD 475 students with 95% attendance, zero discipline referrals and at least a 3.0 grade point average will be recognized in the near future, said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Eggleston. "So second semester when we come back schools will have programs in their buildings in order to start recognizing that."

Eggleston noted that the areas that will be emphasized, attendance, behavior and academic achievement are part of the District's strategic plan. "That's what we're all about. We are schools, we're about educating children. " To provide that education those three attributes must be in place.

Eggleston added that the District wants to provide the best possible educational opportunities, best environment and that students can thrive in USD 475. "When students walk across the stage we want them to be prepared o go into any walk of life. "

This program will be rolled out in the second semester.

Optimists honor Student of the Quarter From Saint Xavier Catholic School

Geary County Historical Society’s Programs and Education Director, Kim Neptune, was the guest speaker at the December 13 Celebration of Optimism gathering at the Hampton Inn in Junction City.

Kim is originally from Southern California and later moved to San Antonio, Texas. After studying American History and Art Management in undergraduate school, she did a one-year internship at the Estes Park YMCA. Then she asked herself “Now what?”

Kim applied to graduate school at Colorado State University and enrolled in public history and museum studies to learn more about how to share history with the public. Upon graduation, “COVID hit and I applied for 180 different jobs”, she said. An opening came at a contemporary art museum in Texas, which was where she worked for two years until she found an advertisement for the Director of Programs and Education at the Geary County Historical Society in Junction City, Kansas.

Miss Neptune was hired and began her work here in September of 20223. She told the Optimist Club members that she wanted to be in a smaller town with a museum” where she could develop programs for both youth and adults.

Kim is responsible for several programs, which include STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Saturdays, Hands-On- History and a new program being developed titled Homesteading 101.

STEAM Saturdays are intended to help young people find out that learning about history can be fun. Sessions are held on the third Saturday of the month and are theme centered. The next STEAM Saturday will be on December 16 from 1 until 3:30 PM will have as its theme “Pioneer Christmas” Reservations are not needed and youth and their families may come and go.

Hands-On-History is designed for home schoolers to learn about Geary County history and participate in a make it and take it activity. These sessions are held once a month from 10:00 until 11:00 AM. Those who attended the most recent gathering learned about the history of Christmas cards. Youth made their own Christmas cards for their family’s and residents at Brookdale Senior Living in Junction City. Reservations are needed for Hands-On-History. The JC Breakfast Optimist Club donated $200.00 to help with the cost of supplies and other things needed for Hands-On-History program.

Still being developed for 2024, is an adult workshop titled Homesteading 101. This will be a quarterly workshop for adults to learn about weaving, beekeeping, canning, making cheese and more.

JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s Guest Speaker Was From The Historical Society

TOPEKA —With temperatures dropping, the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) announced today that Kansans needing financial assistance to keep their heat on this winter can apply for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) earlier this year than in past years, according to a media release from the agency.

“Kansas winters can be brutal and no Kansas family should be cold,” said Laura Howard, DCF Secretary. “We are accepting&nbsp;LIEAP&nbsp;applications beginning Dec. 18, rather than the beginning of January as we have traditionally done.”

LIEAP&nbsp;helps Kansans restore or maintain energy services that heat their home. This includes electricity, natural gas, propane and other home heating fuels.

“We understand that applying for benefits can be complicated,” Howard said. “Beginning Dec. 18 through the end of March, DCF and partnering energy companies will be available to help Kansans gather information and submit their&nbsp;LIEAP&nbsp;applications.”

--ATA Bus has donated an older bus to the Food Pantry of Geary County. It will be used to help the Food Pantry set up in areas where people can walk to get food.

--Commissioners and Department heads met with area state legislators to discuss topics ahead of the 2024 session of the Kansas Legislature. The session always begins in January.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Dodge Ram driven by Garrett T. Ellis, 29, Alta Vista, was southbound on Kansas 177 at 875 Road.

The pickup crossed the center line and side swiped a northbound 2016 Jeep Wrangler driven by Brenda L. Blair, 62, Allen, and then struck a northbound 2016 Nissan Frontier driven by William M.&nbsp;Gilliam, 70, Emporia, head-on.

EMS transported&nbsp; Gilliam to Stormont Vail and&nbsp;Blair to the Morris County Hospital. Ellis was not injured. The KHP had incomplete seat belt usage information.

Geary County Historical Society will host their December STEAM Saturday program this Saturday, December 16th from 1:00-3:30p.m. at the museum. 

The theme for this month’s program is Pioneer Christmas and will feature reenactors Moose and Wind Dancer, who will be on site to teach participants how to make traditional Christmas decorations including wooden ornaments and pomanders: a pioneer Christmas tradition. There will also be Christmas cookies to decorate.&nbsp;

Just before 10:30a.m. Monday, officers filed a report for theft in the 600 block of 3rd Place in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 40-year-old woman reported an unknown suspect fraudulently used her credit card to make purchases at Hyvee, Dillards, and Walmart.

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $659.&nbsp;Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. Using Crime Stoppers allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a man for an alleged sex crime.

Just after 4:30p.m. Dec. 8, officers filed a report for lewd and lascivious behavior in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 14-year-old girl, a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy reported a known male suspect identified as 31-year-old Fernando Velasquez of Manhattan undressed in a public hot tub. 

Police arrested Velasquez on a requested charge of lewd and lascivious; Exposing sex organs to another &lt;18.&nbsp;

He remains in custody on a bond of $7,000, according to online jail records.

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured an accident just after 10p.m. Friday in Riley County.

A 2021 Honda Civic driven by 18-year-old Jacob Wuthnow of Manhattan struck a pedestrian identified as 18-year-old Isabella Rosario of Manhattan near the intersection of North Manhattan Avenue and Bluemont Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

EMS transported Rosario to Via Christi for treatment. The RCPD released no additional details.

Live Well Geary County in partnership with K-State Research and Extension Local Food Systems is seeking a Local Food Fellow to complete the local food system project.&nbsp; Applicants must apply by January 1 2024.

Geary County Food System Plan, Goal 2: farmers, food, entrepreneurs, and food chain workers thrive in our local economy. The goal of this project is to create a catalog of local food producers, get to know the local producer’s story, and help promote their business.

This full-time, eight-week fellowship will run from June 3 – July 26, 2024. This is an in-person position located at: Live Well Geary County Office (Junction City), with hybrid option of working remotely.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Live Well Geary County hiring local food fellow for summer 2024

Geary County Commissioners have scheduled an EMS discussion with Junction City staff at approximately 2:15 p.m. Monday at the County Office Building.

The issue of EMS fees is the focus with county leaders concerned about possibly being over charged and city leaders recently producing numbers verifying their totals for the service.

Also during their meeting Monday the county commissioners will have a working lunch with area state legislators beginning just before noon.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; At noon on December 8, the Junction City Association of Retired School Personnel (JCARSP) celebrated the season with guests.&nbsp; Among the guests were Mary Anderson, who worked in the library at Junction City High School; Jerry Henn, Executive Director of the Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel (KARSP); Mike Isom President and Beccy Isom, District #1 Director of KARSP.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The meeting was held at the Zion United Church of Christ.&nbsp; The meal was catered by Cracker Barrel and coordinated by Margaret Kilpatrick and Carolyn Zumbrunn, who served as hostesses.&nbsp; Nita Miller provided the dessert, which was some of her special homemade cookies.

&nbsp;Junction City High School JC Singers, directed by Michael Brown, performed seasonal music and Dr. Beth Hudson, retired Associate Superintendent and current Board of Education Vice President on the USD 475 Board of Education, shared pictures and told of her trip to the Holy Land.
