&nbsp;Junction City Main Street, Live Well Geary County (LWGC), Geary County Food Pantry, and Wheels of Hope all have a desire for healthy living for the citizens of Geary County. On Saturday, October 14, all these nonprofit organizations will Come Together to celebrate special moments.

The day begins downtown at Junction City Main Street Market which is held each Saturday morning, from 8:30 AM -1:30 PM, across from the Fire Department at the intersection of 8th and Jefferson Streets. Main Street Market is a great opportunity to shop locally and shop healthy.

Be ready for the unveiling of the 7th Junction City Main Street JC Statue unveiling with the theme of Geary County – Outdoors. The unveiling starts promptly at 9:00 AM, on 7th Street, midway between Washington and Jefferson Streets. Geary County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau sponsored the limestone base and Chase Hunter was the muralist.

While at the unveiling, you will be able to view Mural Mania. Local muralist, Mindy Allen, has recruited numerous local artists to begin “activating the alley” connecting Washington Street to Junction City Main Street Market. They will be painting multiple murals on the south side of the Spin Fitness Studio, JC Taekwondo, and JC GymTastics building and part of the north side of D’z Lounge building.

From there, plan to move one-half block west to the intersection of 7th and Jefferson Streets for the 9:15 AM official opening of the 7th Street Bike Boulevard. Live Well Geary County (LWGC), using funding from BCBSKS Pathways to a Healthy Kansas grant and Kansas Department of Transportation, has partnered with the City of Junction City and Flint Hills Metropolitan Planning Organization for the development of the new 7th Street Bike Boulevard. This pathway is a shared roadway with vehicles and is well-marked by new sharrows and signs.

The Junction City Chamber of Commerce is inviting the community to the 7th Street Bike Boulevard Ribbon Cutting. Be sure your family brings their bikes and helmets, or walking shoes, that day to enjoy a leisurely trip up and down the new 7th Street Bike Boulevard.

Directly after the ribbon cutting at 9:30 AM, you can go to the site for the future new Geary County Food Pantry and Wheels of Hope building at 7th and Clay Streets. Learn about the kickoff of their building campaign. Enjoy food, a car show, pumpkin decorating contest, and more. Enter a free raffle contest for a chance to win an adult bike provided by LWGC. You need not be present to win.

Throughout the course of the morning until noon, you can move between the Food Pantry/Wheels of Hope event and Mural Mania at Main Street Market. Then settle down at the Market, watch the Murals unfold before your eyes, and invite your children, grandchildren, and art students of all ages to “paint” with sidewalk chalk at the Market.

Downtown Junction City: Pathway to healthy living

Last week, a bipartisan commission of former state lawmakers finished working on and recommended a solution to a long-standing problem: Kansas’s terrible legislative pay scale.

Currently our state legislature, which is officially supposed to meet for only about 90 days—but which actually often involves much more work than that, frequently spread throughout the whole year—pays its members a base salary of only $27,000. While the coverage of per diem expenses does allow for some variability, still, when all the costs of traveling and housing are added up, Kansas lawmakers are some of the worst paid in the whole country.

The former legislators who met to find a solution to this issue were fully aware of the problem. Some had stories of juggling multiple temp jobs to make ends meet when not in session, while others noted how the current system unintentionally biases the legislature, often limiting those who aspire to run for office to those who can afford the pay cut or already have job security, meaning that retired or independently wealthy candidates predominate. And don’t forget the temptation which poorly paid politicians face when well-financed special interests come calling!

The recommendation of the commission to increase the base salary of legislators to $43,000, with a built-in provision for annual salary adjustments, should be applauded and implemented immediately. More than that, it should lead us to reflect upon our expectations for those elected to office, and whether they’re worth paying for.

Across the United States, the notion of a “citizen legislature” has always had a strong hold. Rooted in small-r republican, localist, and agrarian convictions, it is the idea that those who represent voters should be discouraged from developing any serious involvement with their civic role, and should treat government work as a temporary act of public service instead.

Whatever the value of that vision, its perpetuation despite massive changes in economics, technology, and urbanization over the past century and half is a hindrance to thinking clearly about the political choices which confront voters, where political experience, policy knowledge, and government training needs to be balanced with maintaining local, democratic connections.

Many states recognize this, at least when it comes to matters of compensation. Only 14 states (Kansas included) hold to a genuinely “part-time” model in how they define legislative duties; even states with legislatures that meet only once every two years tend to have hybrid systems, recognizing that legislators put in significant hours and deserve to be paid accordingly.

That those we elect need to stay close to and be responsive to those who elect them is a central feature of democratic accountability. But there are ways of thinking about accountability which still acknowledge the specialized skills that good public servants develop, and the steep learning curve they go through to get there. Imagining politics as a permanent entry-level job, idealizing the inexperienced as somehow more “authentic,” is the sort of delusion which may bring voters to wrongly see practical legislative work as an annoying distraction, unworthy of support (even while continuing to unreflectively re-elect incumbents whose name or party or face they trust).

In the end, the truth is that politicians do real, complicated work, and while in office ought to be regarded as engaged in a full-time profession. More realism in how we view our representatives (and how we pay them) would, perhaps, enable us to better assess their performance—and would likely provide us with more diverse alternatives to choose from when elections roll around.

DICKINSON COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before 2p.m. Tuesday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a Ford F250 pickup driven by Jerri G.&nbsp;Garrett, 60, Hot Springs, Arkansas, was northbound on U.S. 77 two miles north of Herrington.

The pickup traveled left of center into the west ditch, traveled through a pasture and came to rest in a creek bed where it caught fire.

Garrett was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Frontier Forensics. The KHP did not have seat belt usage information.

Weather consultant Chuck Otte has announced that September continued the hot and dry trend that has been in place for much of 2023. 

Temperatures were well above normal and monthly rainfall was one half of normal. The average daily high for September was 86.9, 6.5 degrees above normal. The average overnight low was 63.0, 5.5 degrees above normal. This gave us a monthly mean temperature of 75.0, 6.1 degrees above normal. This thrust September 2023 into the enviable position of the fourth hottest September on record (records dating to the late 1940s.) 

The hottest September was in 1954 with a monthly mean temperature of 78.1 and an average daily high of 92.1. More concerning though is that of the five hottest Septembers on record, three of them have been since 2019 (2019, 2021, and 2023). The coldest September was in 1974 with a monthly mean temperature of only 61.1. 

Surprisingly there was only one temperature record set during the month. The overnight low of 79 on the 5th broke the high low record for that date. The old record was 76 set in 1990 and again in 2016. The highest temperature for the month was the afternoon high of 100 on both September 2nd and the 3rd. The lowest temperature for the month was 54 on the morning of the 13th. While average low temperatures in September range from the low 60s to about 50 degrees, it is common to have a few overnight temperatures in the 40s, which we did not see this year. 

This is the sixth consecutive month with temperatures above normal. So far in 2023 we have had only one month with monthly mean temperatures below average. That was March and the temperature was only 0.1 degree below average. Average rainfall for September is 2.85 inches. The area received only 1.68 inches for the entire month. A rainfall event of 1.18 inches on the 22nd was the highest 24-hour rainfall event since the 5th of July when 1.80 inches of rain fell. 

Year to date we have received 21.04 inches of precipitation, which is only three fourths of our normal, which is 28.50 inches. The wettest September on record was in 1967 when 13.28 inches of rain was recorded. The driest September on record was in 1947 when 0.24 inches of rain fell. October brings us our first full month of autumn, and often our first freezing temperatures. Average daily highs start the month around 75 and by Halloween are down to a cool 61 degrees. Average overnight lows drop from 51 on the 1st to 39 on the 31st. Average precipitation during October is 2.48 inches. Long-term average snowfall for October is one tenth of an inch, but October snowfall events are few and far between. Since 1951 the average first frost date has been October 19th but has occurred as early as September 17th and as late as November 13th.

Abilene, Kan.&nbsp;-&nbsp;A number of events are scheduled to celebrate Dwight Eisenhower's 133rd birthday at the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum.

VFW Vigil - Friday 10/13 - 4:30 p.m. (ends at 7:30 a.m.10/14)

VFW posts from across the state will stand vigil overnight at the burial site of the President. The public is also encouraged to stop by and pay their respects at the Place of Meditation.

Presidential Wreath Laying Ceremony - Saturday 10/14 - 10 a.m.

Saturday events begin with the Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony led by the 1st Infantry Division of Ft. Riley at 10 a.m. The procession begins at the Library building and proceeds to the Place of Meditation for the placement of the wreath.

American Legion Pilgrimage - Saturday 10/14 - 10:45 a.m.

The American Legion Pilgrimage will be held near the statue. The Chapman American Legion Post #240 will provide the rifle salute for the ceremony. Representatives from every Kansas post will gather to pay their respects to the President. This ceremony is free and open to the public.

The Grayson County (Texas) Amateur Radio Club hosts an event each year celebrating Dwight Eisenhower's birthday with a goal of promoting awareness and interest in HAM radio operations.&nbsp;The 10 unique call signs issued by the FCC contain the 10 letters that spell the name, Eisenhower.&nbsp;This year an operator will be stationed periodically at the Eisenhower Presidential Library campus operating under call sign W5E.

Junction City senior&nbsp; Michael Boganowski announced on social media that he is ready to announce where he will play college football next season. 

Boganowski, the number one ranked player in the state of Kansas and a four star recruit according to rivals.com, has narrowed his choices down to four schools. They are KU, K-State, Florida State, and Oklahoma.&nbsp;

Boganowski will make his decision on Thursday, October 19th at 4:00 p.m. in the gym at Junction City High School.&nbsp;

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon blocks any part of the Sun. On Saturday, October 14, 2023, a solar eclipse will be visible (weather permitting) in North, Central, and South America. All 49 continental U.S. states will experience at least a partial eclipse, as will most of Canada and all countries in Central and South America.


During a partial or annular (ring) solar eclipse, such as the one on October 14, 2023, there is no time when it is safe to look directly at the Sun without using a special-purpose solar filter that complies with the transmission requirements of the ISO
12312-2 international standard.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Partial solar eclipse visible in Kansas on Saturday

Junction City Commissioners have given the green light for city staff to gather information that could be used to support a 2024 Defense Community Infrastructure Pilot Program&nbsp; or DCIP grant application. If a grant is received it would fund&nbsp; repair of a bridge on North Washington Street that connects the city with the Fort Riley Trooper Gate.

City Manager Allen Dinkel noted that no local match is required but the City would probably have to put some funding together. That would still have to be determined. There would also have to be support from community members and Fort Riley.

The topic could receive discussion this week with congressional staff members while a city delegation is in Washington D. C. to attend the Association of the United States Army annual convention.

A DCIP grant application would not have to be submitted until next summer. City staff will keep working forward on the project.

Junction City police are now accepting applications for the 2024 Citizens Police Academy that will start on Thursday, January 11th, 2024.

Just before 7p.m. Monday, police&nbsp;filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 400 block of Clydesdale Drive in Ogden, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 Opportunities Unlimited reported a known juvenile broke a window to the residence with a rock. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $5,000.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The labor shortage continues to hinder Main Street as small businesses struggle to find good help.

"All year, Kansas job creators have stood in the gap of their open positions, all while trying to recruit top talent and retain their employees," said Dan Murray with NFIB Kansas. "This challenge is compounded by inflation, which continues to put a pressure on prices. We have seen in our most recent jobs report, 43% of all small business owners have reported job openings they could not fill in this current period. That's up three points from our August report."

The growth of small business owners is slowed by their inability to attract and retain talent.

"It inhibits the small business owner from growing and filling those positions," Murray said. "It also distracts the small business owner, because they are performing the duties of the job that they would like to fill with other employees. Certainly, on both fronts, it hinders that growth. The positive for those looking for employment is, small business owners are willing to pay more. They're willing to compensate more through wages and benefits."

The percent of small business owners reporting labor quality as their top business operating problem remains elevated at 23%.

"Thirty-six percent of small business owners report that they have raised or are beginning to raise compensation," Murray said. "Again, that can be through wages, insurance, other benefits, as well. Those that are currently employed, small business owners are raising their compensation, as well, to retain those employees."

Overall, 61% of owners reported hiring or trying to hire in September, up two points from August.

A group of local residents hung up a total of 52 banners in downtown Junction City on Monday. According to Phyllis Fitzgerald 50 of the banners recognized veterans and two were EMS servant banners.

Those hanging the banners included Phyllis and Keith Fitzgerald,&nbsp; Command Sgt, Major Rob Wilson and his wife, Nina, as well as an NCO from One – Five Field Artillery Battalion.

The City for provided two letters needed for the project. The banners will remain up until sometime after Veterans Day, and will be taken down before the city puts up the holiday decorations . The banner project was an effort supported by the Military Affairs Council of the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce.

Veterans and EMS banners are put up downtown

The Geary County Food Pantry is holding a kickoff party this Saturday, October 14th at 9:30 a.m. at the corner of Seventh and Clay. This location is the future site of the Geary County Food Pantry.

The Kickoff Party will feature several activities, including a bean bag toss, a car show, a pumpkin carving contest, and more. A food truck will also be on site.

For the pumpkin carving contest, bring the pumpkin already carved and decorated for a chance to win a basket of surprises. Attendees will have an opportunity to vote for the best pumpkins by purchasing coupons and then placing the coupon in their chosen jar. 

Ellen Westerhaus and Buck Gibson are board members of the Geary County Food Pantry and both very excited for the kickoff party as well as the new site of the food pantry. 

"Anybody and everybody, please come. We love to see the people we serve," Ellen Westerhaus said. 

"This is an opportunity to come out and have a great morning and support a great cause," Buck Gibson said. 

Donations will be accepted all morning and all the proceeds will go towards the Geary County Food Pantry.

(JUNCTION CITY, Kan. Oct. 9, 2023) – Stormont Vail Health has welcomed Dr. Eric Hazbun, M.D., a hospitalist specializing in internal medicine, to the Hospitalist team. Dr. Hazbun provides a spectrum of inpatient care at the Flint Hills Campus hospital, 1102 St. Mary’s Rd., Junction City.

“I try and see each and every one of my patients as a human being that requires the utmost attention. I try to imagine that person is my family member and provide care as though I was providing care to my family member.”

Dr. Hazbun was born in Colombia, the son of two immigrants. His decision to enter the medical field arose from the helplessness and confusion he felt as a young man watching his aunt struggle and eventually succumb to ovarian cancer.

Dr. Hazbun pursued his medical career in Puerto Rico, where he obtained his medical degree at the Ponce Health Sciences University (formerly Ponce School of Medicine &amp; Health Sciences) before completing the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital Family Practice Residency Program in Florida. In addition, Dr. Hazbun is also a Certified Medical Review Officer.

Dr. Hazbun comes to Stormont Vail from sunny Pensacola, Florida, where he worked as a hospitalist at Baptist Hospital and an Associate Clinical Professor at the Florida State University School of Medicine.&nbsp;

The Bike Boulevard Grand Opening event is this Saturday, October 14th. The event is being put on by Live Well Geary County and is partnered with the Geary County Food Pantry Kickoff.&nbsp;

 Starting at 9:15 a.m. there will be a ribbon-cutting at 7th and Jefferson street in observance of the new boulevard. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, attendees will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win an adult bike.&nbsp; 

Following the ribbon cutting, attendees will bike or walk along 7th street to see the new additions that were made. Individuals will go from 7th and Jefferson to 7th and Clay where the Geary County Food Pantry is having their Building Kickoff Party. At the kickoff party, turn in the raffle ticket for a chance to win the adult bike.&nbsp;

This Bike Boulevard project was funded by BCBSKS Pathways to a Healthy Kansas multimodal transportation initiative.&nbsp;

Grand Opening of the Bike Boulevard set for Saturday October 14th

Fall harvest is in full swing on our central Kansas farm.&nbsp;Do you live to work or work to live? This question of mindset and philosophy has been a source of intergenerational tension for a while now. Baby boomers see working hard to provide for their families and millennials work to support a great life outside their working hours. In the end both groups are working to make a living.

In my world, neither of these is correct; work takes on many forms in my life — a career where my living is earned, jobs completed around the farm that keep the place running and time spent on community activities. They are work in function but don’t merely represent earnings to provide for a family or the pride in a job well done. These things are my work and my life.

For weeks our house has been in fall harvest mode which means non-stop action. Someone is likely driving a combine or grain cart, fueling or shuttling vehicles, farming to prep the soil, running a drill and sometimes all of these are happening at once. Our house feels like a rest stop where meals are eaten, and the shorter days mean leaving and coming home in the dark. We exercise communication and teamwork as we put the needs of the farm over our own comfort. It’s chaotic, exciting and exhausting.

Life off the farm doesn’t stop for harvest. Recently we helped run our local Oktoberfest to raise money for community philanthropy. One of the best things about this event is the group of 16 people who serve on the planning committee to make it happen. This group of working professionals and business owners is made up of parents to small children (including three sets of twins), leaders in churches or serving on community and civic boards, and we even have some pursuing advanced degrees. Everyone on the committee is stepping away from busy lives; we are making sacrifices and working because we take ownership in making our community a great place to live.

My “real job” is fairly exciting this time of year, too. Most of the cooperatives employees are focused on harvest and helping our members get wheat in the ground. My focus is on planting a different type of seeds. The start of the school year provides lots of opportunities for me to give tours of our facilities and classroom presentations about the value of cooperatives, working at the cooperative and making the decision to live rural by choice.

Farmers are often recognized for their work ethic which might be because to farmers work is more than just doing a job, it is our life. We aren’t paid by hours or jobs done; we spend months investing time, energy and resources not knowing how much or even if it will all pay off in the end. This is the work-life philosophy that underlies my life. Much of what I do has little instant gratification or payoff. I have to have faith that my time, effort and skills will yield something great in the future. 

They say that if you love what you do you will never work a day in your life. I see it slightly differently, if you love what you do, you gladly work hard to make things happen. When you fill your life with work that you love or do it for people you love it becomes so much easier. The question shouldn’t be living to work or working to live? It should be are you working to make a living or a life?

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2013 Fiat 500 driven by Lisinda Bach, 42, of Ogden and a 2012 Cadillac CTS driven by Jason Kridner, 46, of Manhattan, crashed&nbsp;near the intersection of Anderson Avenue and Wreath Avenue.

EMS transported Bach to Via Christi for treatment of her injuries. Police also issued her a citation for failure to stop at a red light.&nbsp;
