HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Even if you missed the filing deadline for taxes this year, as long as you are due a refund, there is no penalty, and you can even still file for free, if you fit the income guidelines.

"All of the penalties that the IRS talks about are all on an unpaid balance," said Michael Devine with the IRS. "If you filed your tax return and didn't pay what you owed, then penalties and interest are going to be compounding on that. But, if you're due a refund, there's no penalty for you not filing your tax return, but there is a three year statute of limitations in order to file the return and get your money back."

There is a lot of free tax credit money that hasn't been distributed to those who qualify for it, because they have not filed their taxes at all.

"That is critically important to people who may not have filed for the past couple of years," Devine said. "We're talking about 2019 and 2020. There were a lot of credits that were increased because of COVID. The only way to get those is to file the tax return. We're talking about the Child Tax Credit, which could be $3600, the Recovery Rebate Credit, which would be $1400 per adult and child, the Earned Income Tax Credit, if you have three children, almost $7000. If you didn't file, because you're not required to, this is the time to go ahead and get that done."

The IRS is actually sending out reminder letters to those who might qualify.

"We are sending out letters to about 9 million households," Devine said. "These are people that are normally not required to file a return, because they don't make enough money to have to file, but they may be eligible to claim those credits and thousands of dollars in refunds. If you do it yourself, you can go and get the tax form on <a href="https://www.irs.gov/">IRS.gov</a>. Or, for 2019 and 2020, you can go to a registered tax professional and they can file it electronically."

Heartland District Fall workshop recently convened in Junction City Ks. The Pilot Club&nbsp; had their Junction City contingent there representing with 13 other clubs. They were joined by Pilot international Executive Council Representative (ECR) Beverly Shean&nbsp; from Florida. Our District wide giving project was for Pawnee Mental Health.

A highlight is the clubs marketplace shopping and fun for all. They finished with a volunteer "Pick Me Up" for the Kansas City employees Fire Dept. We tied blankets for them to give to families&nbsp; in need when tragedy strikes.&nbsp;

Pilot Club participates in Fall Workshop

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.6&nbsp;percent in September. This was an increase from 2.5 percent in August and a decrease from 3.0% in September 2021.

“The unemployment rate edged up to 2.6&nbsp;percent in September,” said Secretary Amber Shultz. “Despite this small increase, the unemployment rate has remained below pre-pandemic rates each month since last September.”

The Geary County jobless rate fell over half a percent from 4.4 in August to 3.7 percent in September. Riley, Pottawatomie, Dickinson and Clay counties saw a similar drop. The rate in Wabaunsee County is down slightly from 2.6 percent in August to 2.3 in September.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 500 from August. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 1,600 over the month, while government decreased by 1,100.

“Kansas job estimates for the private sector indicate 2.5&nbsp;percent growth compared to last September,” said Labor Economist Emilie Doerksen. “The manufacturing and trade, transportation, and utilities industries saw the largest gains during this period.”

Since September 2021 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 27,500. This change is due to an increase of 28,300 private sector jobs and a decrease of 800 government jobs.

Dorothy Bramlage Public Library officials are continuing efforts to support a proposed new library project. Library Director Susan Moyer said they're working for a Defense Community Infrastructure Grant program next year, "to cover the lion's share of the cost of the project. "

Friends of the Library were awarded community service tax credits from the State of Kansas. "So we are in the process of selling those," said Moyer.&nbsp; Officials are searching for other pots of money.

FAITH TABERNACLE APOSTOLIC CHURCH, JUNCTION CITY – The 2022 Apostolic Doctrine and Holiness Conference recently held for two days and three nights at Faith Tabernacle in Junction City.

Seven messages from six preachers quickly established then built upon a common theme focusing on the church and its work in this day and hour. Bishop Tom Johnson, Colorado Springs preached the first night using Cavanal Hill in Oklahoma as a simile. Celebrated as the tallest hill in the world, it is one foot short of being a mountain.&nbsp;

Elder John Padget, Enterprise Alabama taught the necessity of using the Word of God and Spirit of God when navigating life. In the ocean, without landmarks, each wave and day looks the same. In searching the heavens and horizon, the knowledge of time allows the sailor to chart his place and navigate the ocean.&nbsp;

&nbsp;The annual Apostolic Doctrine and Holiness Conference, first held in 1995, is a joint venture between Heritage Family Church, Wichita, and Faith Tabernacle. With 1,687 in attendance, Faith Tabernacle hosted meals for ministers and their families at Apostolic Academy on Rucker Road while young people enjoyed evening food and fellowship at the 4H center. A youth lock-in at the HD Karns facility concluded the conference on Friday night.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a 76-year-old woman after shooting Friday night in Ogden.

Just after 9p.m., the Riley County Communications Center received a call from the woman stating she had shot her husband, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department. When officers arrived on scene, they found a 75-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

The man was transported to Via Christi in critical condition and later life-flighted to Stormont Vail in Topeka for further treatment.

Just before 1a.m. Saturday, officers arrested Bernice Farmer, 76, of Ogden on requested charges of attempted second-degree murder. She is being held on a $100,000 Bond, according to the RCPD.

The Junction City Police Department held its First Shop with A Cop Charity Golf Tournament October 15th at the Rolling Meadows Golf Course. All proceeds from the tournament supported the annual Shop with A Cop charity event put on by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 43. 

The tournament had a great turnout having 108 Golfers, several volunteers and raising a little over $9,500.00 for the charity. We are looking forward to next year’s tournament.

Blakeslee notes rise in&nbsp;E. coli&nbsp;outbreaks related to bagged salads&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. —&nbsp;Salads make a nutritious meal or an easy addition of green color into the daily diet and can be found at almost any restaurant or grocery store.&nbsp;

But Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee said consumers also know packaged lettuce for&nbsp;E. coli&nbsp;outbreaks and a cause of foodborne illness.&nbsp;

“Between 1998 and 2019, 36 outbreaks have occurred linked to mostly romaine lettuce,” said, Blakeslee, who is also coordinator of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">K-State’s Rapid Response Center for food science</a>.&nbsp;

According to a recent USDA study, E. Coli was more likely to be found on lettuce harvested in the fall than on lettuce harvested in the late spring. Overall bacterial contamination, E. Coli survival rate, and lettuce deterioration varied by season.&nbsp;

Although romaine lettuce is more commonly linked to&nbsp;E. coli&nbsp;outbreaks, it hasn’t impacted domestic consumption.&nbsp;

“According to a&nbsp;<a href="https://fsi.colostate.edu/romaine-lettuce-2" target="_blank">report from Colorado State University</a>, romaine lettuce accounts for 30% of the lettuce consumed in the U.S.,” Blakeslee said. “From 1990 to 2009, consumption increased from 1.2 to 7.7 pounds per person. In 2017, the consumption of romaine and leaf lettuce increased to 12.5 pounds per person.”&nbsp;

She said darker greens have more nutritional benefits, while leafy greens are overall a great low-calorie food with fiber, folate and vitamins.&nbsp;

“Because most leafy greens are grown near the ground, it is important to rinse fresh produce under running water before consumption,” Blakeslee said. “It is best to rinse leafy greens just before use and rub leaves with your fingers to remove visible contamination.”&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, KAN. –&nbsp;Following a month-long investigation, police arrested Michael Steere, 26, of Manhattan on Thursday for past sex crimes involving a juvenile female victim known to him, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

Steere is&nbsp; being held on requested charges that include three counts each of rape and aggravated indecent liberties with a child connected to incidents occurring between August 2017 and September 2022.

Beginning Oct. 24th through 28th, the Junction City Police Department will join other Kansas law enforcement agencies to stop what has been compared to an epidemic in the state. In 2019, eight children, ages 0-13 lost their lives due to car crashes in the state. Sadly, 62% of those children were not wearing their seat belts. 

Oct. 24th through the 28th, law enforcement officers across Kansas will be extra vigilant when patrolling around schools. Officers will issue citations to anyone who does not obey Kansas law.&nbsp;

Geary County Historical Society was the recipient of over $8000 during the annual Geary County Match Day event held on October 18th. Sixty donors gifted funds to the historical society and at the end of the event the society ranked 4th in the number of individual donors to pledge money to their organization, just below the C.L. Hoover Opera House, Dorothy Bramlage Public Library Foundation and the Geary County Food Pantry. 

Each donation will be matched at 50%, which means the Historical Society anticipates a yield of $12,000 from the 2022 Match Day event.

Fort Riley will host its first full-service Military Retiree Appreciation Day since 2019 on Saturday, Oct. 22. Military retirees of all services, and their spouses, widows or widowers are invited to Riley’s Community Center, 446 Seitz Avenue, Fort Riley. Doors open for registration at 7:30 a.m. and the program will begin at 8:30.

Throughout the day guests will hear the latest information on TRICARE, Medicare, Irwin Army Community Hospital services and other health care issues, veteran affairs, legislative issues, casualty affairs, long term care insurance and many other topics of concern to military retirees. Many veterans service organizations will also be on hand to provide information to attendees.

The public health team from Irwin Army Community Hospital will provide vaccinations from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for influenza, shingles, and pneumonia.

The lunch hour will include entertainment from an area barbershop quartet. Attendees may purchase a box lunch for $10 in advance by calling the Fort Riley Retirement Services Office at 785-239-3320 or 785- 239-3667, or emailing&nbsp;usarmy.riley.rso@army.mil.&nbsp;Lunch reservations must be made by Oct. 15.

DICKINSON COUNTY —A Kansas man was injured in an accident just before 4a.m. Thursday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Buick Park Avenue driven by Joshua W. Matthews, 37, Herington, was northbound on U.S. 77 three miles south of Herington.

The Buick crossed the center line and struck a southbound 2000 Kawasaki Vulcan driven by Matthew B&nbsp;Pfrenger, 39 Herington.

 Pfrenger was ejected from the motorcycle.&nbsp; EMS transported him to a Wichita Hospital.&nbsp; Matthews was not injured.&nbsp;Pfrenger was not wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1999 Mack Cement Truck driven by&nbsp; Camran B. Bruna, 22, Hanover, was southbound on Kansas 148 Highway seven miles south of Hanover.

The driver lost control of the vehicle when it blew a driver's side tire.

The truck overturned onto its passenger side in the northbound lane and struck a 2017 Honda CRV driven by Cameron B. Gray, 37, Fairbury, Nebraska. 

After impact, both vehicles entered the east ditch. The cement truck's drum came unattached and also came to rest in the ditch south of the vehicles.&nbsp;

Gray was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Ward Funeral Home. EMS transported Bruna to the hospital in Hanover. The KHP did not have seat belt usage information.

Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a single vehicle accident in the 6000 block of Davis Creek Rd. Elwin Roberts, Dwight, was traveling northbound in a Chevrolet Silverado when a donkey was struck in the roadway. Roberts was not injured.

Valley View Senior Life has announced that Cydni Washington has been hired to serve as Director of Social Services. She is from Hutchinson but has lived in Junction City for many years. Washington is a graduate of Kansas State University and received a degree in Social Work in 1996.

Since graduation Washington has worked as a social worker in local hospitals and long term care facilities.

Valley View Senior Life is a senior living campus in Junction City.&nbsp;
