The Junction City Police Department Community Involvement Unit is accepting applications for the Law Enforcement Summer Camp from June 5 to 9.

The camp is limited to 25 participants going into the seventh, eighth or ninth grade during the fall of 2023. The application deadline is May 4th. 

Forms can be given to the School Resource Officer at the Junction City Middle School, Junction City High School, Junction City Freshman Success Academy, mailed, emailed, or hand delivered to the Junction City Police Department, 210 E. Ninth.

Law enforcement summer camp offered by Junction City PD

The annual For the Love of Horses Gala will be 5 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at Rock Springs Ranch.

The event is a celebration to benefit&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rainbowmeadowsranch.com/">Rainbow Meadows Equine Rescue and Retirement Inc.</a>&nbsp;of Junction City. Rainbow Meadows has been providing safe refuge for abused, abandoned and neglected horses, donkeys and mules since 2005.

“Our For the Love of Horses…Benefit and Gala has always been our hallmark fundraising event, and we’ve really missed it over the past few years,” said Karen Everhart, executive director. “It’s such a special evening that brings together many of our supporters and reinforces the Rainbow Meadows mission and vision. We’re very excited to be bringing it back this year and look forward to seeing our long-term supporters as well as some new local faces.”

There will be friends, food, fun and a series of silent auctions. Tickets are $75 per person or $500 for a table of eight.

MANHATTAN —&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansasforests.org/">Kansas Forest Service</a>&nbsp;officials have announced that an annual project that aids in training new wildland firefighters and helps reduce the risk of wildland fires&nbsp;will be held April 3 to 7 in Scott City.&nbsp;

The Hazard Fuels Mitigation project will take place at the Scott Wildlife Area and Historic Lake Scott State Park. The exercise is held in partnership with the&nbsp;<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/">Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks,</a>and Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp;

“This annual project is a great opportunity for the Kansas Forest Service and our partner agencies to work together to improve wildfire response and incident management skills, while at the same time doing work that will reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires around Scott Lake​,” said Eric Ward, assistant fire manager with the Kansas Forest Service, and incident commander for this year’s project.&nbsp;

Officials said the project includes conducting prescribed burns; reducing undesirable vegetation; removing deceased trees from wooded areas; and establishing fire breaks in hazardous areas. Hutchinson Community College students in the fire science program will gain experience working alongside mentors in the wildland fire community.&nbsp;

Forest Service to lead fire mitigation project in western Kansas

BUCHANAN COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after 3:30p.m. Friday in Buchanan County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Chevy Cobalt driven by Michael W. Ordonez, 26, Manhattan, Kan., was northbound on Interstate 29 just south of the I-229 exit in St. Joseph.

The driver failed to observe a 2011 Chevy Equinox driven by&nbsp; Stanley J. Drimmel, 70, Lancaster, Kansas, slow for an upcoming construction zone.

The Cobalt rear-ended the Equinox. The impact, pushed the Equinox into the rear of a 2018 Chevy Impala driven by David J. Mears, 94, St. Joseph.

Buchanan County EMS transported a passenger in the Cobalt Marisa E. Lord, 29, Manhattan, Kan. and a passenger in the Equinox&nbsp; Cynthia A. Drimmel, 68, Lancaster, Kan., to Mosaic Life Care.

The drivers were not injured. Lord was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

MANHATTAN - Kansas State University Foundation has announced the upcoming retirement of Lois Cox,&nbsp;CFA, CFP, senior vice president of investments and chief investment officer.

Cox has been with the KSU Foundation for 18 years and will retire on June 30,2023.

Cox graduated from Kansas State University's College of Business Administration in 1988.

Previously she has worked as a portfolio manager for Kansas Farm Bureau for 20 years before joining the Foundation in 2005 as the director of investments.

In 2013, Cox moved into the role of chief investment officer, or CIO.

"Our work has allowed us to meet our ultimate objective of intergenerational equity — creating sustainable and relevant value across generations in support of Kansas State University,"&nbsp;said Cox.&nbsp;"We're proud to have generated a 10-year annualized return of 9.25% and a 20-year annualized return of 7.9%."

KSU Foundation President and Chief Executive Officer, Greg Willems was impressed by Cox's integrity and her impact on the foundation's overall mission and success.

"Lois is one of my most admired professionals I've had the privilege of working with in my career. I've learned so much from her example and professional interaction with others," said Willems.&nbsp;"Lois has done a masterful job of maximizing our investment management strategy and returns and has expertly balanced the efforts of her staff with contributions from our board and asset management committee." This is unchanged from 2.9% in January and an increase from 2.4% in February 2022.

In Geary County, the jobless rate rose a half a percentage point to 4.5 percent — the second highest in the state behind only Linn County in southeast Kansas. Riley County's unemployment rate remained relatively stable at 2.9 percent.

Volunteers should report to Spin City, 915 S. Washington at 8a.m. April 22.&nbsp;Bring gloves and drinking water. Lunch will be provided.&nbsp;

Over the last 10 years, volunteers for Operation Clean Sweep have removed 15.42 tons of trash from Junction City.

If possible, help the city plan for the event by pre-registering.

Operation Clean Sweep set for April in Junction City

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged scam.

The weekend is expected to bring several chances of welcome moisture to the Flint Hills, the National Weather Service in Topeka said.

There is a 20 percent to 30 percent chance of rain beginning Thursday night and lasting into Monday — when that rain could turn into a wintry mix.

Winds will remain calmer, sustained at 5 to 10 mph through the weekend.

Daytime highs Friday through Sunday are expected to be in the upper-40s to mid-50s, with overnight lows right around the freezing point.

Several chance for rain in Flint Hills through the weekend

The Junction City Little Theater production of "Arcadia" has been selected as a potential play to represent Kansas at the American Association of Communitty Theatre <a href="https://aact.org/">(AACT) </a>Regional Festival in Salina this April 21st through 23rd.

This coming Sunday (March 26th) at 3 p.m. the JCLT actors and crew that worked on the production for its recent run at the C.L. Hoover Opera House will come together one more time for a shorter 1-hour version of Arcadia called a "competion cut," according to Director Britain Stites.  This will be viewed by an AACT adjudicator (judge) to decide whether the JCLT production or a Theatre Atchison, KS play will represent Kansas at the regional festival.  "We can show on a state and possibly a regional stage what kind of art, creativity and talent we have in this community," Stites said.

An audience for the special 3 p.m. Sunday performance is encouraged and while there will be no admission a free will donation will be requested to help defray the cost of rights and travel for the festival.

The Geary County Historical Society will host their annual Bingo at the Museum game night, Friday March 31st. This annual fundraiser includes a chili feed that begins at 5:30 p.m. and an evening of Bingo games beginning at 6:30 p.m.. All prizes were donated by local businesses. Meals of chili, drink and dessert will be $5 and reusable Bingo cards will be sold for $5 or 3 for $10. All proceeds from the event benefit the Geary County Historical Society.

During the months of October through May the JC Breakfast Optimist Club recognizes a Junction City High School (JCHS) Student for the student’s optimistic approach to learning, improving themselves, and being a positive influence on others at school and in the community.

This month’s recipient is Morgan Nabus.

Dana Wiegand, the local Optimist Club’s Student of the Month Coordinator, stated that Moran is a 9th grader at JCHS and is in the Student 2 Student Leadership Advisory program. She has been active is active in the Freshman Committee, Lady Jays Volleyball, Basketball, and softball teams.

Morgan’s teachers stated that Morgan is “an absolute pleasure to have in class. She is always respectful, hardworking, quietly hilarious, supportive of her peers, competitive, and holds herself to very high standards. She is always the first person willing to help, is kind and patient with new students, takes care of all of her school work and knows how to make people around her relax and have fun.”

Another teacher stated that “Morgan is patient, kind and supportive and demonstrates a level of compassion and thoughtfulness often not seen in students her age. Moran is always up for a challenge and is conscientious about the quality of her work.”

Morgan told the Optimist Club members that she “plans on studying in the medical field when she graduates from high school. This may lead to her becoming a doctor in a specific area.” She has not made a complete decision about that being a freshman in high school.

Morgan is the daughter of Lisa and Randy Nabus. Both parents grew up in Junction City and are JCHS graduates. Moran received a $25.00 gift certificate from JC’s BBQ &amp; Grill and a movie pass to the B&amp;B Theaters in Junction City.

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club meets every Wednesday at the Hampton Inn located at 1039 S. Washington Street. A breakfast buffet is provided to potential members who attend a meeting for the first time. The buffet is open at 6:30 a.m. and the meeting begins at 6:50 and ends at 7:30 a.m..

The contest is open to all children and youth of services members, active duty, National Guard, Reserve, and retirees, enrolled in Army CYS Programs.&nbsp;

Prizes will be given to one overall winner and the top entries in each category. The overall prize is a $1,500 Exchange gift card. Other prizes are Exchange gift cards that range from $150 to $700. All winners will also receive a Certificate of Achievement. Winners will be announced during the month of June.

The Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce will host a legislative coffee this weekend.

The event will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Junction City Municipal Building, 700 N. Jefferson.

2023 Lady Jays youth softball camp is right around the corner

ELLSWORTH COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after 9:30a.m. Wednesday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Toyota Highlander driven by&nbsp; Donald J. Svita, 70, Pueblo, Colorado, was eastbound on Kansas 140 at Kansas 156, a mile and a half south of Ellsworth.

The driver failed to stop at the stop sign. A southbound 2006 Peterbilt semi driven by Luke W. Johnson, 39, Randolph, struck the SUV.

EMS transported both drivers to Ellsworth Medical Center where Svita was pronounced deceased. The drivers were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

Riley Co. man hospitalized after fatal semi, SUV crash

The proverb that “it takes a village” has become ingrained at the 
Stormont Vail Health Flint Hills Campus. This team is one that 
understands it takes many people, working together, to achieve common 
goals. When news that the Flint Hills Campus lab staff would be 
welcoming four new lab techs from the Philippines, this proverb once 
again, rang true.

Moving to Kansas from the Philippines is a huge undertaking and full 
of unknowns. The Flint Hills campus team wasted no time in planning how 
to make their new teammates feel welcome and at home in Junction City. 


They not only helped them find housing, but they also turned the house 
into a home by getting all of the items needed for it to be move-in 
ready. A list of more than 50 items was posted and in less than 24 hours
 Flint Hills team members had signed up to donate everything from a 
washer and dryer to pots and pans. 

The new team members were met at the 
airport in Kansas City and welcomed by Ruth Dela Cruz, Regional Manager

Stormont Vail Health Flint Hills Campus. This team is one that 
understands it takes many people, working together, to achieve common 
goals. When news that the Flint Hills Campus lab staff would be 
welcoming four new lab techs from the Philippines, this proverb once 
again, rang true.Moving to Kansas from the Philippines is a huge undertaking and full 
of unknowns. The Flint Hills campus team wasted no time in planning how 
to make their new teammates feel welcome and at home in Junction City. 
They not only helped them find housing, but they also turned the house 
into a home by getting all of the items needed for it to be move-in 
ready. A list of more than 50 items was posted and in less than 24 hours
 Flint Hills team members had signed up to donate everything from a 
washer and dryer to pots and pans. The new team members were met at the 
airport in Kansas City and welcomed by Ruth Dela Cruz, Regional Manager

Stormont Vail team 'clears the list' to welcome international lab techs

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (AP) — Two people arrested over the weekend in Michigan have been charged with killing a Kansas couple while stealing their car.

Online court records show that 33-year-old Steven Pierce was charged Tuesday and 29-year-old Kallie Peters on Monday with two counts of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery and theft. Both are from Junction City, Kansas. No attorney is listed for them in the online records.

The victims in the case were identified as 75-year-old Valerie Krissman and 80-year-old Roland Krissman.

The complaint said that the killing happened earlier this month in Junction City during the theft of the Krissman's 2006 Buick Lacrosse.

Junction City police said in a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/JCPDKS/posts/pfbid02sZC8tbqpZgNdXTxXGw4WPBAXkFSziM6tKtcN6yeSTVd9UYsfYujg1okbe2SRV84rl">news release</a>&nbsp;the Michigan State Patrol arrested Pierce and Peters on warrants Sunday.

No other details were immediately released about the killing. The prosecutor's office didn't immediately return a phone message.
