DICKINSON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 6p.m. Thursday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Jeep Gladiator driven by Robin Faye Hardman, 62, Bogue, and a 2011 Hyundai Sonata driven by Ernesto&nbsp;Saenz Flores, 19, Wichita, were southbound on U.S. 56 at 300 Avenue. The Hyundai struck the Jeep that had pulled into the turning lane and attempted to make a U-turn to go northbound.

EMS transported Flores to Salina Regional Health Center. Hardman and a passenger in the Jeep were not injured.&nbsp; All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kansas man hospitalized after crash during u-turn

On June 1 and 2, a coordinated multi-jurisdictional criminal enforcement effort was conducted along the I-70 corridor through Geary County. The Sheriff's Department provided the information, and said the operation was aimed at locating, identifying, and apprehending major criminals using I-70 as a trafficking corridor.This operation brought together personnel from the Geary County Sheriff's Office, Junction City Police Department, Dickinson County Sheriff's Office, and Marshall County Sheriff's Office.

On the evening of June 2, Undersheriff Justin Stopper and Sheriff Nate Boeckman, conducted a traffic stop on a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) at mile marker 302 on I-70 for traffic infractions. During the stop indicators of further criminal activity were observed, prompting the deployment of a K9 unit from the Junction City Police Department.A probable cause search of the CMV revealed approximately 3,280 pounds of marijuana and 260 pounds of cocaine concealed within the trailer. The estimated street value of the seized narcotics is approximately $4 million.

Following the discovery, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) was notified and responded to assist with the investigation.Two individuals were taken into custody as a result of the traffic stop:• Yonas Tsegay, 33, of California• Samson Haliab, 31, also of California.

Sheriff Boeckman expressed his appreciation for the interagency cooperation that led to this outcome:"This operation is a powerful example of what law enforcement can accomplish when we work together across jurisdictional lines. The commitment and coordination of all agencies involved was key to this success."&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Geary County Sheriff's Office thanked&nbsp; all participating agencies for their professionalism and dedication.

Both subjects are being held on $500,000 bonds each and the investigation is ongoing.

1st Infantry Division #Army 250 Birthday Run is scheduled Monday

The Fort Riley law enforcement team will once again participate in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run in support of the Special Olympics. Fort Riley runners will receive the torch at the Ogden Gate from the Riley County Police Department at about 1 p.m. and then carry the torch along Huebner Road to the Grant Gate where they will hand the torch to runners from the Junction City Police Department and Geary County Sheriff’s Office. 

During the run, drivers can expect delays on Huebner Road and should approach the formation with caution.

Geary County Offices will be closed on Thursday, June 19, 2025, in commemoration of Juneteenth.

The Emancipation Proclamation, an edict issued by President Abraham Lincoln freeing the enslaved, went into effect January 1, 1863.  The information did not reach all parts of the confederate south for over two years, until June 19, 1865, now commemorated as Juneteenth. 

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Renae Riedy, the Family and Consumer Sciences Agent for Geary County K-State Research and Extension announced that her office is hosting a series of estate planning presentations at the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library. 

The first session of the estate planning presentations is scheduled for Tuesday, June 17, from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Riedy said that there is no charge for this first program. 

This first session aims to present information about estate planning and then offer individuals the opportunity to collect their materials and schedule an appointment with her if desired. Riedy said that this estate planning presentation can be seen as a call to action.  Each person will need to find the right system for them.

She was seeking $100,000 to help fund a community table program that could serve 75 meals a day. It would be part of the effort to help address food insecurity in Geary County. Funding would be sought from other sources including grants, oganizations and the County.

The First Thousand Members Club operates the Harmony Center.&nbsp;

Commissioners talked about the possibility of in-kind trash and water service or a letter of support but but did not take final action. There were suggestions for Chery-Hilaire to visit with the Convention and Visitors Bureau on the matter and that going to other organizations would help. There was some sentiment as well that this needs to be privately funded.

The Kansas Department of Transportation has approved a bid for a Geary County project. It is on K‑177, from 1 mile south of the Geary/Riley county line north to the Geary/Riley county line and involves milling and overlay for one mile. 

Shilling Construction Co. of Manhattan received the bid totaling $856,541.04.

Geary County Commisoner Trish Giordano feels it's time to talk about increasing the transient gest tax. It is the tax paid by users of lodging facilities.

Giordano plans to put the subject on the June 16th county commission meeting agenda for discussion.&nbsp; She feels Geary County may be leaving money on the table and the six percent rate in Geary County is the lowest around the area. One percent of it is allotted for a sports complex project ( should one ever occur ). 

The rate in Abilene is eight percent&nbsp; and in Manahttan seven and a half percent.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating an aggravated robbery that occurred April 11, in the 1500 block of Pipher Lane in Manhattan have made two more arrests.

Just after 10a.m. Monday, police arrested 16-year-old&nbsp;Miles Ellner and 15-year-old Josie Friesen both of Manhattan on requested charges of aggravated robbery, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. Both are being held without bond at the North Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center.

On April 11, a 16-year-old&nbsp; victim reported the suspects pointed a firearm and and took items from him.

Kansas has been ranked the ninth-best state in the U.S. for aging in place, according to a new study released by Seniorly, a senior living resource platform. The ranking comes at a time when a record 4.2 million Americans are turning 65 this year, with nearly three-quarters expressing a preference to remain in their homes as they age.

The study analyzed ten key factors across all 50 states and the District of Columbia using data from the CDC, Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services, U.S. Census Bureau, HUD, and other sources. Metrics included the availability of home health aides, emergency room wait times, housing costs, smart home adoption, and services like meal delivery.

Kansas stood out in several areas, helping to earn its top-10 ranking. The state boasts relatively short emergency room wait times, averaging 121 minutes — the sixth shortest nationwide. It also sees moderate precipitation levels at 27 inches per year, which is tied for 13th best. Additionally, 27.7% of residents interact with household equipment via the internet, signaling a relatively high rate of smart home technology adoption, which can be crucial for older adults living independently.

"Aging in place provides comfort and familiarity, and Kansas appears to offer the kind of infrastructure that supports seniors who want to stay in their homes," the report states.

While Kansas ranked highly, the study highlighted sharp contrasts elsewhere. Florida, often viewed as a retirement haven, was rated the worst state for aging in place. It ranked poorly in key categories such as home health aide availability, meal delivery services, and housing affordability for seniors.

The top ten states for aging in place were largely concentrated in the western U.S., with Utah (1), North Dakota (2), and Idaho (4). Leading the list.&nbsp; &nbsp;New Jersey is the lone eastern state in the top ten.&nbsp;

As the aging population grows and healthcare technologies advance, the report underscores the importance of thoughtful planning and state-level support systems to help older adults safely and comfortably remain in their homes.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan.&nbsp;– The Geary County Schools USD 475 Board of Education approved the hiring of Courtney Eichhorn and Alicia Scofield to leadership positions within USD 475 on Monday night.&nbsp;

Eichhorn will take over as Associate Superintendent, while maintaining her current role as Executive Director of Special Education in USD 475, following the retirement of longtime USD 475 employee Deb Gustafson. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her future role as she has spent time as USD 475’s Director of School Improvement and was also the Assistant Director of Special Education from 2019 to 2022. During her tenure, Eichhorn has worked at Junction City High School, Junction City Middle School and the Freshman Success Academy to go along with her time at the district office.

Scofield was named Director of Teaching and Learning on Monday. She will also continue in her current role as the USD 475’s Director of School Improvement this upcoming school year. She has been a staple in the district since 2005 as she has been the Director of Student Services as well being the principal at Ware Elementary from 2019 to 2022. Prior to her time as principal, Scofield was an assistant principal at Ware for four years and has experience as a student services facilitator and Special Education teacher in USD 475.

In addition, the board of education also approved the hirings of Easton Burgardt as head boys’ basketball coach and Madison Gritton as boys and girls golf coach at Junction City High School on Monday Night.

Burgardt, who is currently an 11th&nbsp;grade ELA teacher, has worked with the boys’ basketball program as an assistant coach the last seven years helping lead the Blue Jays to heights never seen before in program history, including a state tournament appearance in 2022-23 as well as the program’s first Centennial League championship during the 2023-24 season. Burgardt, who has also served as the assistant boys’ golf coach during his tenure, graduated from Kansas State University in 2018 and recently completed his master’s degree in educational administration from Emporia State University in 2022.

Gritton, a 2016 Junction City High School graduate, will take over both golf programs at the high school after a successful collegiate career that saw her shine at Fort Hays State University. As a Tiger, Gritton was a four-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll selection and posted a stroke average of 85.4 during her senior year. She is currently a biology teacher at JCHS as well as the NEST Club sponsor. Gritton, who has coached both collegiate and youth level student-athletes during her tenure, not only helped usher in the inaugural season of the girls’ golf program at Junction City High School in 2015 but was also a part of the Blue Jays dance team and National Honors Society. She was a first-team all-state selection her senior year and placed sixth overall at the 2015 Class 6A State Golf Tournament. Gritton graduated from Fort Hays State University in 2020 with a degree in biology and minor in chemistry.&nbsp;&nbsp;
