Just before 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 6th, agents from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and officers with the Wamego Police Department arrested 20-year-old, McKaine T. Farr, of Wamego.

Farr was arrested for the alleged distribution of a controlled substance causing great bodily harm on death in connection with the September 5th, 2021 death of 21-year-old Jayson Ebert of Wamego.&nbsp;

The KBI was called to assist the Wamego Police Department on September 9, 2021, after Ebert was discovered deceased at 1312 16th Street in Wamego.

Ebert died from an apparent fentanyl overdose, and according to investigators, Farr knowingly distributed the counterfeit oxycodone tablets lace with fentanyl which caused Ebert's death.

Farr was arrested at 15227 6th Street Road in Wamego and was booked into the Pottawatomie County Jail.&nbsp;

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. 

It is expected that the Pottawatomie County Attorney’s Office will prosecute the case. 

The investigation is ongoing and no additional details will be released at this time.

RILEY COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a robbery and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 1a.m. Saturday, a 19-year-old man reported&nbsp; a 21-year-old male suspect was at his apartment at The Pointe, 1401 College Hill Avenue, when he stole cash from him leading to a fight between the two. 

Officers were called to the scene with the report of a disturbance and witnessed Courtney Harris, 21, of Junction City running away. 

Harris jumped over a second-story railing and ran from officers but was detained shortly after in the immediate area. 

EMS transported Harris to Via Christi for examination of his injuries from the fall and arrested him in connection to the incident for aggravated robbery.&nbsp; After being medically cleared, Harris remains confined in the Riley County Jail on a total bond of $50,000.

Junction City Commissioners will conduct a public hearing and consider final adoption of the 2023 City budget Tuesday evening. Their meeting begins at 7 p.m. at 701 North Jefferson.

The City is not proposing an increase in the property tax levy, leaving it at 48.328 mills.

Geary County Commissioners will hear a number of reports when they meet from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the County Office Building. Reports from the rural fire chief / emergency management director, HR Director, public works administrator, finance officer and county clerk are on the agenda. The commission is also scheduled to meet in executive session with attorney Peter Rombold for legal matters regarding Geary Community Hospital.

USD 475 school board members will be in session at 6 p.m. at the Devin Center. They will consider purchase of 500 additional laptop computers to cover current student need and provide stock for the next two years. The Board will also be asked to consider replacement of existing business computer labs at Junction City High School.&nbsp;

Staff recommends that the BOE approve the recommendation from the administration to purchase the 500 student laptops and 90 student desktops from Dell for $302,949.60.

There will be a busy public meeting slate in Junction City Tuesday

Junction City Commissioners will consider a request to solicit bids for demolition of the former Knights Inn, 1024 South Washington, when they meet Tuesday evening. The meeting is scheduled at 7 p.m. at 701 North Jefferson.

According to an agenda memorandum City staff believe the building is a dangerous and unsafe structure.

If the process continues it may cost up to $250,000 to demolish and clean up the site. The project would be funded through demolition removal in the general fund. $100,000 was budgeted for 2022. Costs will be billed to the property owner of record and will reimburse any charges to this account.

While the building could come down this year it may be a few years before the site is freed for other uses.

Former Knights Inn property will be on the Junction City Commission agenda

Glenn Brunkow, Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher Tuesday I was hauling hay; it was my fifth or sixth load of the day, and I had been hauling hay for the better part of a week. It was probably all too routine. I was making the left-hand turn off of the highway onto the county road. I looked back in my rearview mirror and did not see anyone before I started to turn. That was when I saw the Subaru had decided to pass me at that very point. Thankfully, nothing more happened than the driver squealing their brakes and shaking their fist at me, but it could have been much worse. Over the past couple of months, I have had a couple of friends who have had worse experiences sharing the highways with other motorists. Thankfully, none of them were seriously hurt, but the damage to farm equipment was not something they had planned to deal with, I am sure. Let me be the first to say I was not without fault. Upon inspection, I learned my left-turn signal was not working. However, if I remember my driver’s ed classes right, it is not permissible to pass on a double yellow line or at an intersection. Along with that, following so close to a trailer that the driver in front of you cannot see you is not good either. My point is all drivers need to share the road, and those roads are starting to get even more crowded with slow moving ag equipment as harvest starts. As ag producers we need to make sure our equipment has working lights and turn signals. We need to be aware of who is around us on the roads and have a plan of action that assumes other drivers will not do the right thing. If at all possible, move equipment at times when the road is less crowded. If you are driving during harvest, please, give the equipment plenty of room. Stay far enough back to see the rearview mirrors of the vehicle ahead of you because that will mean they can also see you. Farm equipment moves slowly so take that into account as you approach. You will close the gap much faster than you may realize. Please, never pass near an intersection, many times our turn signals don’t work. Yes, farm equipment will slow your drive down, again, please take a deep breath. Don’t be in such a rush that you pass in a bad place or at the wrong time. That farmer is growing the food you are rushing home to put on your table. I got lucky, and I am using that fortunate moment as a reminder to be more vigilant when I am on the road. It only takes a second, a blink for things to go bad. Take the time to slow down, make the right decisions and be courteous. We are all in this together, we have to share the same road, let’s all be safe and make sure we make it home.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Ford F250 driven by Sean M. Warner, 36, Manhattan, was eastbound in the 1200 Block of Deep Creek Road four miles Southeast of Manhattan.

The driver failed to negotiate the curve. The pickup left the roadway to the right and the driver overcorrected back onto the roadway. The pickup then entered the south ditch, struck a power pole and overturned.

Warner was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to&nbsp; Irving Fairview Funeral Home. The KHP did not have seat belt usage information.

Manhattan man dies after pickup strikes power pole, overturns

Applications will be accepted for Junction City Main Street grant funds for downtown building facade improvements. This program is designed to assist business and property owners with improvements to their existing commercial buildings in the downtown district.&nbsp;

Main Street is partnering with the City, R2B4 Bramlage Family Foundation and Geary County to implement the program to assist with facade and exterior improvements that will impact perception and contribute to the overall experience for residents and tourists to the downtown area.

The program will provide a rebate of up to 50% on eligible project costs up to a maximum grant of $1,000 to each project.

Eligible projects include and are not limited to concrete work design and permit fees associated with facade improvements, door replacement, exterior cleaning, lighting and painting, signs, window replacement or repair to enhance appearance and awning repair, replacement and installation.

To receive a grant property owners or business operators must be current on property taxes. Projects must be completed no later than March 31, 2023.

Those interested in applying for a grant may request application guidelines and the grant application form from the Main Street office at 131 W. 7th St, Junction City, through email at junctioncitymainstreet@gmail.com or download from the Main Street website: junctioncitymainstreet.org

Board of Education members will address the issue Tuesday night during their meeting, said Reginald Eggleston Superintendent of Schools. "We're going to talk about firming up some of our ideas and thoughts about it. We know that we want to apply for a grant, and so we have a timeline." Eggleston noted that in November the Board will have to make a decision so that all of the components for the grant application are covered and the District will be ready to submit it.

Eggleston believes everyone understands the facility is needed and the data verifies that is the case. "All of the basics are done so we just now need to locate the property where we want to place this phenomenal facility."

District staff will seek approval to initiate an ECC conceptual design study for a facility that would include 32 classrooms plus other administrative, special education and meeting spaces. The staff's intent is to seek a $15 million Defense Communities investment Program grant in calendar year 2023. If received USD 475 would contribute $15 million to the grant for a total project of $30 million. If the grant application is successful construction on the facility could occur in fiscal-year 2024.

Chapman has been holding a Labor Day celebration since 1909. This year's two-day event begins with the Lions Club Golf Tournament on Sunday at the Indian Hills Golf Course . There will be shotgun starts at 8 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. in the 4-person scramble.

Other activities on Sunday range from a chili cook-off and pie contest from noon until 2 to a beer garden from 6-10 p.m. and a street dance from 7-10 p.m. Star-Gazing is scheduled from 8 -10 Sunday evening where you can see the stars and planets using the Chapman Library's telescope.

On Monday the annual Lions Club Labor Day parade will begin at 2 p.m. Other activities will include the Class of '77 car show at Chapman High School and a silent auction inside the Chapman Nazarene Church from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Touch a Truck will be held at the District Gym from 8 until noon, arts/crafts food vendor down from 8 to 3, Antique tractor show south of&nbsp; the high school from 9 to noon, quilt show at the Methodist Church fellowship hall 9-4, axe-throwing in Sheeran Park 10 to 1:30, self-guided barn quilt tour, kids pedal pull at Sheeran Park 10:30, burgers and beer at the American Legion&nbsp; from 11 to 1 and a beer garden noon until 3 p.m.

Every year the Junction City Police Department Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 43 conducts Shop With a Cop to benefit needy children at Christmas time. They are allowed to purchase gifts with funds raised for the event.

Police said they will host their first annual Shop With a Cop charity golf tournament at 10 a.m. Oct. 15 at Rolling Meadows Golf Course. The tournament will be a how low can you go format, meaning every 4-man team hits from the closest tee box, and each green.&nbsp;

Entry for the tournament will be $50 per golfer. Buy-in includes green fees, cart rental, range token and lunch. Teams can sign up at the Junction City Police Department where forms are available. More information can be found on the JCPD Facebook page or by calling 785-762-5912 and asking for Sgt. Borges.

Hays rallies from a 14-point deficit to defeat Junction City

FORT RILEY, Kan. – The Department of the Army announced today the upcoming fall rotational deployment of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, to Europe.

The 2nd ABCT, stationed at Fort Riley will replace the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, as part of a regular rotation of forces to support the United States’ commitment to NATO allies and partners.

 “I’m incredibly proud of the Dagger Brigade, and our Soldiers are excited to train and build interoperability with our NATO allies and partners,” said Col. Bryan M. Harris, commander of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. “The 1st Infantry Division has a tremendous history in Europe, and the Dagger Brigade is ready to continue that legacy.”

The Guess Who boast record sales well into the multimillions, showcasing electric instrumentation, timeless balladry and unpredictable jamming. The evening will be the ultimate sing-along experience led by a Canadian-bred band that's connected with the masses for decades with a virtual hit parade of 14 Top 40 hits, including "These Eyes," "Clap For the Wolfman," "Hand Me Down World," "No Time," "Star Baby" and "Share the Land." Audiences will also hear the group's classics and double-sided singles, including the No. 1 rock anthems "American Woman" and "No Sugar Tonight." Guess Who will perform at K-State

Junction City Main Street officials unveiled the first JC Statue Thursday evening. This initial statue is located in Heritage Park, and there are plans for nine more to be located in the future in different areas of downtown.

Terry Butler, Main Street Development Officer, said muralist Mindy Allen will paint each of the statues.

Community members in attendance for the unveiling by Main Street Executive Director Michaela Joyce, were also able to enjoy Baskin Robbins ice cream.

Junction City Main Street unveils first JC Statue

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a robbery in Manhattan.

Just after 1a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for aggravated robbery in the 600 block of 3rd Place in Manhattan. 

A 30-year-old man reported a male suspect known to him robbed him at gunpoint of $450 cash after a withdrawal at the Navy Federal Credit Union ATM.&nbsp;

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.p3tips.com/tipform.aspx?ID=353#">Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers</a>. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

August continued the ongoing trend of above average temperatures. Unfortunately, unlike the previous three months that had near average or above average precipitation, August was also dry!Geary County Exension Agent Chuck Otte. The average daily high, during August, was 90.9, 2.9 degrees above normal. The average overnight low was 68.2, 1.9 degrees above normal. This resulted in a monthly mean temperature of 79.5, 2.3 degrees above average. 

While it was above average, it was slightly cooler than July which is what we would normally expect. The highest temperature for the month was 101 degrees reached on the 6th, 7th, and 13th of the month. The lowest temperature for the month was 62, achieved on the 11th, 18th, and 31st. While it was above average it was a long ways from being record setting. The hottest August on record was in 2000 when we had a monthly mean temperature of 85.0 degrees. Even last year was warmer with a monthly mean temperature of 80.7. The coolest August on record was in 1981 with a very comfortable monthly mean temperature of 71.5. 

There was one temperature record set in August. The daily high of 72 on the 16th broke the record for the low high temperature for that date. The old record was 74 set in 1964. A lot of locations around the state have been comparing the number of days of 100 or higher to the long term average. Looking back to 1949 (over 70 years of records we find that our area has an average of 9 days per summer with temperatures of 100 or higher. This summer we have had 8 to date. We could still have high temperatures over 100 though so stay tuned! In looking at days with temperatures of 90 or above we find that the long term average is 52 days per year. As of August 31, we were at 52 days. Given the early September forecast, we will likely end up a little over 52 days this year of 90 or higher. The summer with the most days over 100 was in 1954 when the mercury hit 100 or above on 42 days.

Both Junction City and Milford Lake recorded well below average rainfall for August. Average August rainfall is 4.55 inches. Milford Lake recorded 1.08 inches for the month and Junction City 1.38 inches. Normal precipitation year to date is 25.65 inches. Year to date Junction City has received 23.61 inches and Milford Lake 22.81 inches. While it was drier than normal for the month, it wasn’t record dry. That honor goes to 1971 when there was no rainfall recorded in August. The wettest August was in 2013 when 10.33 inches of rain deluged the region! September is a month of changes. It brings us the official start of autumn and cooler temperatures. 

Average daily highs for the month drop from 85 on the 1st to 75 on the 30th. Overnight lows drop even further going from 64 at the start of September to 51 by the end. While we have seen frost in September, it is not an expected occurrence. With the end of summer we head into the drier parts of the year. September has a long term average rainfall of 2.85 inches. For those who can’t wait for snowy mornings, you’ve got a ways to go yet as we don’t expect even early snows until late October.&nbsp;&nbsp;
