RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged theft in Manhattan.

On Tuesday, the Riley County Police Department activity report indicated officers filed a report for theft in the 400 block of 3rd Place in Manhattan on December 21.

 Dick's Sporting Goods reported a 52-year-old man had switched price tags from youth golf clubs to adult golf clubs to pay a lower price for the adult clubs. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $870.

Water service has been restored at the C. L. Hoover Opera House and recovery continues from a weekend leak. While officials at first thought the problem was caused by a sprinkler in the attic that does not appear to be the case, explained Opera House Co-Director Joe Markley. He attributes the problem to a two-inch pipe that failed and caused the water damage.

Markley said potable water service has been restored to the Opera House.&nbsp; The City crew along with&nbsp;contractor clean up personel have&nbsp;done amazing work over the Christmas holiday to minimize the damage and restore the Opera House.&nbsp; Most of the water damage was in the front half of the building.&nbsp; The theater suffered only minimal water damage to the carpet in the back.&nbsp;

Opera House employees Sheila and Joe Markley, Britany Lamb, Tim Avery and Danny O'Brien along with Randy Heldstab showed up on Christmas Eve day to help move things to a drier location and begin recovery.&nbsp; Tim Avery, the Tech Director, has been checking the computers and has discovered only minimal damage. O'Brien has continued business office work turning in payroll. They await the copy machine company to determine if there was any damage to the copy machine.&nbsp; It certainly was wet.

Joe Markley said while assessing&nbsp;the full extent of the damage will take some time, they will be operational and ready to open on Tuesday, January 3. There is a dance rental on Jan 13 and a comedy show on January 14.&nbsp; &nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an injury crash and working to locate the driver.

Just after 7p.m. Saturday, officers responded to the report of an injury crash in the 2100 block of Candlewood Dr. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

When officers arrived on scene, they found a 2006 Honda Accord driven by an unknown person had been traveling southbound in the 2100 block of Candlewood . The Honda lost traction, spun, crossed the center line, struck a curb on the east side of Candlewood and then struck a fire hydrant. 

The driver of the car ran from the scene before officers arrived.&nbsp; EMS transported a passenger, Aniah Robbins, 18, of Manhattan to Via Christi for treatment of a leg injury.&nbsp; The RCPD released no additional details.

Police work to enforce DUI laws

Any way you cut it, this year was tough whether it was the economy or the weather. In many ways 2023 can only get better. Our sense of optimism is one of the best qualities of agriculture. Each year is a blank slate, a new beginning with endless possibilities. It doesn’t matter how bad the last year might have been, this next one is our year. It is because we are in the business of nurturing new life each year. If we plant crops, we put seed in the ground with the hope rains will come, the sun will shine and the new growth will break through the soil. We count on two things that we cannot control, rain and sunshine. Yet each year we place a small seed in the soil and hope it will sprout, grow and produce grain. If that does not take faith, hope and optimism, I don’t know what does. If we raise livestock of any species, most of us are responsible for bringing new life into this world. Very little creates more wonder for me than to watch a newborn lamb or calf come into this world. I don’t care how many times I witness the miracle of life; it will never get old. The planning and preparation for that moment was months or even years in the making. All the work, all the waiting is worth it in those first few moments. A sense of optimism and hope abounds with all livestock producers this time of the year. Hope and optimism are inherent to farming and ranching, it is the one thing we all have to have. We approach each year knowing we need to feed a hungry world and to do that we need to have help. There is so much of agriculture that we cannot control, and that makes faith in the future so important. We plan and work hard to do all we can, but in the end our livelihood comes down to what Mother Nature decides to do. To keep going each year requires a resolve few others understand. That optimism for the future is what keeps each of us going through the bad years and disappointments. It is what makes us so special and why we are the backbone of society. No matter the situation, no matter how bad things might get, we move forward with eternal hope and the knowledge things will get better. I hope that this year will send rains at the right time and sunshine when we need it. I hope the crops are bin busters and your livestock are sleek and fat. Most of all I hope the upcoming year is a good one. May 2023 bring the best for you with hope that 2024 is even better. &nbsp;

Geary County Fish and Game Association is offering an opportunity to recycle your natural evergreen Christmas Tree after the Holiday is done.&nbsp; Simply remove all decorations and deposit the tree at the empty lot at the northeast corner of 14th&nbsp;and Jackson streets in Junction City.&nbsp; These trees will be collected by GCF&amp;GA volunteers in late January and used for wildlife habitat or shredded for mulch.&nbsp; Please place your trees behind the sign by 20 January.

Christmas trees are being collected by Geary County Fish & Game

JACKSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for multiple allegations after a traffic stop.

Just after 5p.m. Friday, a sheriff's deputy&nbsp;conducted a traffic stop on a 2006 Ford Focus for a traffic infraction  near 150th and U.S. 75 Highway, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.&nbsp;

During a search of the vehicle, the deputy found illegal contraband. The rear seat passenger, Michael Shawn Herrick, 47, of Manhattan, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, identity theft, possession of drug paraphernalia and interference with law enforcement. 

Herrick was also wanted on two outstanding Geary County warrants. He previous convictions that include forgery and for drug possession and distribution, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Manhattan man accused of ID theft, drug possession 

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. –The&nbsp;USD&nbsp;475&nbsp;Board of Education voted unanimously during its December 8 meeting to retain the land where the former Junction City High School stood. The decision was made, primarily, because the land makes an ideal site for a new Early Childhood Center.

"One important aspect of the new Early Childhood Center proposal presented to the school board was the location of the new facility, and the Early Childhood Program staff believe that this location is best suited for the new ECC,” said Stephanie Waterman, Coordinator&nbsp;of the district’s Early Childhood Program.

Current building plans would increase the Early Childhood Program’s capacity to approximately 750 students and consolidate classes and staff that are currently spread throughout the district. It would also allow the district to offer free pre-kindergarten education to the community.

The facility would have state-of-the-art technology and modern accommodations for students with special needs.

The district has allocated $15 million of its own funds and will apply for a Defense Community Investment Program (DCIP) grant from the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation (OLDCC) to supplement the rest of the cost, which is expected to be another $15 million. To qualify for the DCIP grant, applicants must show proof of available land and have a shovel-ready project with completed construction plans.

“We feel really good about our chances with the grant,” said David Wild,&nbsp;USD&nbsp;475&nbsp;Construction Program Manager. “The board’s commitment of $15 million and our strong relationship with the administering authority, the OLDCC, gives us reason to be optimistic.”

The DCIP grant will be submitted by early next summer, their decision is expected no later than August. If awarded, construction would begin immediately, with plans to have it completed within a year.

USD 475 to RETAIN Former High School Land, Build Early Childhood Center

WABAUNSEE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 4:30p.m. Sunday in Wabaunsee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1999 Volvo S70 driven by Sean Beck, 44, Boulder, Colorado, was eastbound on Interstate 70 one mile east of Wabaunsee Road.

The driver overcorrected to the right. The Volvo traveled off the south shoulder and struck the guardrail.

EMS transported Beck to the hospital in Wamego. A passenger was not injured.&nbsp; Beck and the passenger were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

Driver falls asleep, is injured after I-70 rear-end crash

Junction City firefighters and C.L. Hoover Opera House personnel responded to that downtown building early Saturday morning in response&nbsp; to flooding. Among them was Opera House Co-Director Joe Markley. "We had major flooding happen in the main part of the Opera House. In fact water was flowing out the front doors, all three sets."

A crew was brought in to begin cleanup of the facility, which had water one inch or more deep in offices, the lobby and water that got into the carpet in the main theater.

Markley talked about the possible cause of the problem. "I don't know definitive on this, but it looks like one of the sprinklers that were in the attic of the Opera House went off. I don't think it was a case of a frozen pipe, and flooded the whole elevator shaft and water was in places an inch deep at least throughout the whole lobby." Water did not get into the basement or the adjacent Rolfs building. It flooded every office including the box office, the directors office&nbsp; and everything on the main floor. Water also came through the ceiling of the second floor Montgomery room. "So I'm not sure what the extent of the damage will be." Markley added the Opera House is a City owned building so it will be up to their insurance.

Shows for the season were finished. Markley noted that the next scheduled show is Jan. 14. "So in one capacity or another we'll be ready." Water got onto the computers and ticket printer. "Whether they're ruined, we're going to wait a good long time to let everything dry out and see where we are on that. But, hopefully as far as the public it won't shut us down much as at all."

The Opera House was already scheduled to be open the week between Christmas and New Year's Day but Markley expects it to reopen in some on Jan. 3.

"I don't know definitive on this, but it looks like one of the sprinklers that were in the attic of the Opera House went off. I don't think it was a case of a frozen pipe, and flooded the whole elevator shaft and water was in places an inch deep at least throughout the whole lobby." Water did not get into the basement or the adjacent Rolfs building. It flooded every office including the box office, the directors office&nbsp; and everything on the main floor. Water also came through the ceiling of the second floor Montgomery room. "So I'm not sure what the extent of the damage will be." Markley added the Opera House is a City owned building so it will be up to their insurance.<figure>

Geary County Sheriff's Deputies worked a non-injury accident at East Lyons Creek Road and Otter Creek Road for a vehicle accident. Irwin Barragan, Junction City, was turning from Otter Creek Road onto westbound East Lyons Creek Road when the vehicle slid off the roadway and into a ditch. It was then hit by a Toyota Highlander driven by Billy Knox, Junction City, who was traveling in the same direction. The Highlander hit the Envoy as it also slid in the same intersection. There were not any injuries.

Deputies responded to U.S. 77 and Skiddy West Road for a vehicle accident. Timothy Schrader, White City, was attempting to stop at a stop sign on Skiddy West Road at U.S. 77 when he slid on an icy road in his Kia Sportage and struck Kenneth Knight, Woodbine, who was southbound on U.S. 77 in a Kia Sorrento. No one was injured.

Deputies responded to U.S. 77 Highway mile marker 145 for a single vehicle non-injury accident. Roberto Coronado, Oklahoma City, was northbound in a Chevrolet Camaro when the vehicle slid off the road and struck a tree. The car sustained heavy damage. There were not any injuries.

Damage estimate from an early morning fire at Stickels Cleaners has been put at $10,000. No one was injured.

At 4:19 a.m. the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to Stickels Cleaners, 714 North 12th Street for a report of a structure fire. Crews found a small fire in a shed behind the business with an occupant working to extinguish the fire. It was contained within 10 minutes of arrival.

The building is an approximate 400 square foot accessory structure for the main building used for dry cleaning operations. The loss was estimated at $10,000 for the building and equipment. The fire cause was listed as accidental due to thawing operations that were being conducted.&nbsp;

This week five JCHS KAY Club Members, advisor, and staff delivered Christmas Gifts to 35 residents at Bicentennial Manor. Members of the KAY Club, advisors, teachers, and school staff participated in ADOPT-A-SENIOR 4 CHRISTMAS Project by purchasing and wrapping gifts to be delivered. Residents received MORE gifts than expected.

In addition, HD Karns Magnet Students (not pictured) gave their Pen Pals at the Bicentennial Manor, Bartell, Brookdale, and several United Methodist Members, painted Christmas Ornaments and Christmas letters.

Community projects were coordinated by Teresa Palmer- KAY CLUB, Jacky Robinson, Site Coordinator of Bicentennial Manor, Sandra Havel, JAG Specialist, and I.C.A.R.E.

GEARY COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 7p.m. Wednesday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Toyota Tacoma driven by&nbsp; Zachary P. Bealer,&nbsp; 33, Kansas City, Mo., was westbound on Interstate 70 at McDowell Creek Road

The driver lost control of the pickup. It spun across the median. An eastbound 2020 Chevy Silverado driven by Rhoda Yoder, 32, Trinidad, Colorado, rear-ended the Toyota.

An eastbound 2016 Dodge Ram driven by Kinsey Davidson, 32, Cleveland, Tennessee, struck the Chevy and then the Toyota.

After impact the Toyota came to rest approximately 80 feet down the embankment.

&nbsp;Bealer was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Johnson's Funeral Chapel.&nbsp; There were no other injuries. All were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Driver dies after 3-vehicle I-70 crash

GEARY COUNTY - Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to Milford Lake on December 22, 2022 at 9:42 a.m. on the report of an individual stranded on the water in a disabled jon boat.

Geary County Dispatch was contacted by Justin Howe of Fort Riley when the motor on the jon boat died while he was attempting to retrieve geese decoys off the lake.

After the motor died, the boat drifted away from where Howe had been hunting, and got stuck in ice, eventually becoming frozen in place.

When Howe contacted dispatch he advised them he had been in the boat, on the lake for approximately 40 minutes.

From the shore, Deputies located Howe in the jon boat around 10:20 am, the Geary County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit used the City of Milford boat ramp to access Milford Lake, after breaking ice at the ramp, and were able to launch into the lake at 11:09 a.m.

Junction City Fire/EMS also responded to the City of Milford boat ramp, ready to assist if medical attention was needed.

Dense fog made it difficult for the Marine unit to locate Howe and his jon boat.

The Marine Unit's engine experienced mechanical issues while searching for Howe and the engine went into limp mode.

Geary County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit was able to locate Hoe and his jon boat about 100 yards from them before they made the decision to figure out an alternative plan.

The Marine Unit had to break ice around Howe's jon boat to get close enough for him to board the Marine unit boat.

Howe and the Marine Unit members arrived at the City of Milford boat ramp at 11:55 a.m. where they were screened by the Junction City Fire Department EMT's before being released.

The Geary County Sheriff’s Office would like to say thank you and show our gratitude to the Junction City Fire Department for their assistance.

This federal investment was included in the FY2023 Appropriations Package.

“Already home to nearly 15,000 active duty servicemembers and the headquarters for the 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley will soon have the opportunity to expand its capabilities,” Moran said. “By building new barracks, the base will have greater capacity for additional soldiers to be housed at Fort Riley and will be in a better position to compete for future opportunities. I appreciated the opportunity to welcome Chief of Staff of the Army General James McConville to Fort Riley this summer to see firsthand Fort Riley’s capabilities.

“Throughout my time in Congress, and especially since the 1st Infantry Division’s return to Fort Riley in 2005, I am proud to have worked closely with the Department of Defense to invest in resources to grow and support Fort Riley’s critical infrastructure, including new middle and elementary schools and the state-of-the-art Irwin Army Hospital,” Moran said. “With the addition of these new barracks, Fort Riley will continue to be one of the best places for our service members to live, work and raise a family.”

Fort Riley to remain on minimal manning with limited services Friday

TOPEKA — Democrat Tom Hawk of 
Manhattan said Thursday he would retire Jan. 10 midway through his 
four-year term in the Kansas Senate.

Hawk, 76, is a retired school superintendent and teacher who had a 
33-year career in public education. He served three terms in the Kansas 
House before he was defeated for re-election in 2010. In 2012, he won the first 
of three elections for Kansas Senate.

He represents the 22nd District in the Senate that includes Riley, Geary and Clay counties.

“It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve our state
 and represent my pocket of Kansas in the Legislature,” Hawk said. “I am
 grateful to my neighbors for placing their trust in me to be their 
voice in Topeka over these past 10 plus years.”

The 2023 Legislature convenes Jan. 9. Hawk’s exit from the Senate 
would officially transpire the next day. He serves on the Senate’s 
budget, transportation and utilities committees.

Senate Democratic Leader Dinah Sykes, of Lenexa, said residents of 
Hawk’s district were fortunate to be represented by Hawk. She said his 
work to secure K-12 and university funding and to advance bipartisan 
legislation, including the state highway plan, would benefit the state 
for generations.

“His intellect, attention to detail and inimitable wit made our team 
stronger,” Sykes said. “Our caucus will feel a little emptier and a lot 
less funny without Tom Hawk in the room every day. ”

His seat in the Kansas Senate will be filled through a selection 
process organized by the Kansas Democratic Party. Republicans in the 
Kansas Senate hold a 29-11 advantage over the minority party. The full 
Senate doesn’t face reelection until 2024.
