Eagle Flight Plan marketing seminars scheduled in March

The Geary County 4-H/Senior Citizens Building Committee has announced plans to host their annual fundraiser for the building this coming Saturday March 25th starting at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $15.00 and can be purchased from the Geary County K-State Research and Extension Office, at the Geary County Senior Citizens office, from a building committee member or at the door.

The event, themed “Back to our Roots”, will consist of a catered dinner from 6:00 to 6:45 p.m., followed by both silent and live auction items. Proceeds will go toward building improvements and upgrades.

Constructed in 1978, the 4-H/Senior Citizens Building is used by a multitude of local groups, including the Senior Citizen Center, 4-H, and more. The building is also available to rent for private events through the Extension Office. Funded entirely through rentals and annual fundraiser, the building and surrounding facilities are governed by local leaders and volunteers.

FORT RILEY, Kan. (AP) — Fort Riley has not released any additional information after a guard shot and wounded a motorist during an altercation at a gate at the Army base.

The base said in a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/FortRiley/posts/pfbid02p3JBkz7VTQv5wGsCTKNa6P7eEk9iqamBT2VPRwZZuieEzZcjoXETneENkgcTsh95l">news release</a>&nbsp;that the motorist's injuries weren't life threatening.

The altercation happened Monday after the motorist drove through the gate and was stopped by an automatic vehicle barrier. The release said the the “situation escalated” when the motorist got out of the vehicle, and the guard opened fire.

The base has not released the the name of the wounded driver or what else led up to the shooting.

The release said that no additional information will be released while military police conduct an investigation. A phone message that The Associated Press left with the base wasn't immediately returned.

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club has partnered with St. Xavier’s Catholic Schools to form a Junior Optimist International (JOI) Club and is affiliated with Optimist International. There are more than 15,000 students in over 500 Clubs throughout the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. The membership of local Junior Optimist Club consists of boys and/or girls who are in grades 6-12 at the school.

A meeting with Principal Sean Augustine was held with the JC Breakfast Optimist Club, who approved the proposal to start a JOI Club at St. Xavier’s Catholic Schools. A meeting was held with adult facilitators Amy Johnson and Ricardo Gutierrez from the JC Breakfast Optimist Club and students, who shared information about forming a club and seeking interest from students.

The first organizational meeting was held January 11, 2023, with students who wanted to pursue the club. The purpose of the Club would be to provide opportunities for members individually and collectively to participate in community service activities, develop leadership abilities and prepare for responsible roles in society. The philosophical foundation for the club and every Optimist Club is The Optimist Creed.

Optimist International requires no fewer than eight members to be considered for an official club, a set of bylaws and an application for charter, which must be submitted and approved by the St. Louis, Missouri headquarters.

The club has unofficially met once a month since January. One of the members made a motion to the youth group at the March meeting that club members meet twice a month to get more accomplished. This motion will be considered at the April meeting.

On March 14 Optimist International approved the charter for the St. Xavier’s Catholic Schools Junior Optimist International Club. There is only one other JOI Club in Kansas. That club is a JOI Golf Club in Ottawa, Kansas that meets as unit once a year.

We are a Friend of Youth and support not only this newly formed JOI Club, but 17 youth organizations in Geary County. Shop Kansas Farms rolls out new website in celebration of Ag Day

Twenty-five new law enforcement officers graduated from the Kansas 
Law Enforcement Training Center on March 17 in a ceremony 
held in KLETC’s Integrity Auditorium.

Class Coordinator Bryan Carey expressed his appreciation for the 
graduates and reminded them of the value of knowledge and learning.&nbsp; 
“Everyone on this stage was concerned with getting better.&nbsp; This 
profession is constantly changing and evolving.&nbsp; Become a lifelong 
learner.”

Riley County Police Department Director Brian R. Peete was the 
commencement speaker for the ceremony.&nbsp; Director Peete shared with the 
graduates his advice on successfully navigating the profession, to 
include being at your best as often as you can, to be true to yourself 
always, and to be patient.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

“You will grow as human beings; you will 
bring out the best in others.&nbsp; You will help people, you will save 
lives. You will make a difference, and you are now part of something 
bigger than yourselves.”

Under the authority of Executive Director Darin Beck, graduates 
received certificates attesting to the satisfactory completion of a 
full-time basic course of instruction, and certification as Kansas law 
enforcement officers from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ 
Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority.

ABILENE — The United States' agriculture policy during the Eisenhower
 Era is the topic of the upcoming Lunch &amp; Learn at the Eisenhower 
Presidential Library.

The Lunch &amp; Learn is scheduled for noon 
Thursday either in person or online. For in-person participants, the 
program will be in the library building courtyard. Participants are 
encouraged to arrive by 11:45 a.m. and park in the south parking lot 
nearest the library building. A light box lunch will be served on a 
first-come, first-served basis.

 guest speaker will be Jennifer Ifft, an associate professor and 
extension specialist in agricultural policy at Kansas State University, 
who will discuss agricultural economics during the Eisenhower Era. 
According to information from the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Ifft 
has an integrated research and extension program that covers policy and 
regulatory issues that affect the viability of U.S. and Kansas 
agriculture.

"Agricultural policy in the U.S. addresses many 
important challenges including fighting hunger domestically and 
internationally. Policies on maintaining a safe and secure food supply 
along with economic stability for farm families are critical. This 
presentation will cover key policies addressing these challenges during 
the Eisenhower Administration. Historical context will be discussed 
while outlining both the intended and unintended economic consequences,"
 according to information from the Eisenhower Presidential Library.

Ifft is scheduled to summarize how such challenges currently persist and discuss important lessons from this time period.

Ifft
 has a Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley, an M.Phil from 
the University of Cambridge, and a B.S. from the University of Illinois 
at Urbana-Champaign. She grew up on her family’s farm in central 
Illinois.

MANHATTAN — Healthy eating is important in developing young children's habits around food, said Tristen Cope, a family and youth development agent in K-State Research and Extension's Chisholm Trail District.&nbsp;

“It is important to help children try new foods by being patient with them and offering a new food several times,” Cope said. “Caregivers can help children feel more comfortable by modeling healthy eating.”&nbsp;

Cope and Monique Koerner – a family and community wellness agent in the Cottonwood District, will host a webinar titled, Nutrition and Skills to Get You Started on Family Meals, on March 22. Their session is being offered as part of the bi-weekly series, Living Well Wednesday, hosted by K-State Research and Extension family and consumer sciences professionals across Kansas.&nbsp;

Cope recommends selecting the right portion size for each family member and using time during family meals to build relationships.&nbsp;

“Providing meaningful time for conversations can help support a child’s overall development,” she said.&nbsp;

There are short-term barriers like family schedules, jobs or older sibling scheduling conflicts that may interfere with family meals, but Cope said long-term benefits outweigh the barriers.&nbsp;

“In addition to enjoying a family meal, preparing for the meal is a great opportunity for young children to be involved. Helping in the kitchen can encourage young children to grow their sense of responsibility, take ownership in a task, and will help them be even more willing to try new foods,” Cope said.&nbsp;

The March 22 webinar is free, but registration is required. K-State Extension agents to share tips on nutritious family meals 

K-State horticulture expert shares tips to set you up for success

MANHATTAN – If you’re planning to plant a tree in your yard this spring, there are some steps you can take to make sure your new landscape has its best chance of success.&nbsp;

Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham shares the following 10 rules for planting trees:&nbsp;

Select the right tree for the site.&nbsp;

To avoid serious problems,&nbsp;<a href="http://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/info-center/recommended-plants/index.html" target="_blank">choose trees that are adapted to your location.</a>&nbsp;Consider whether the tree produces nuisance fruit or if there are disease-resistant varieties available. For example, there are a number of crabapple varieties that are resistant to apple scab and rust diseases. Also consider the mature size of a tree to be sure you have enough room. Ask a local nurseryman for suggestions for trees adapted to your area.&nbsp;

Keep the tree well watered and in a shady location until planting.&nbsp;

When moving the tree, lift it by the root ball or pot and not by the trunk.&nbsp;

Before planting, remove all wires, labels, cords or anything else tied to the plant.&nbsp;

If left on, they may eventually girdle the branch to which they are attached. The root flare (point where trunk and roots meet) should be visible. If it isn't, remove enough soil or media before planting so that it is.&nbsp;

Make the hole deep enough so that the tree sits slightly above nursery level. Plant the tree on solid ground, not fill dirt. In other words, don't dig the hole too deep and then add soil back to the hole before placing the tree.&nbsp;

The width of the planting hole is very important. It should be three times the width of the root ball. Loosening the soil outside the hole so it is five times the diameter of the root ball will allow the tree to spread its roots faster.&nbsp;

Remove all containers from the root ball.&nbsp;

Cut away plastic and peat pots; roll burlap and wire baskets back into the hole, cutting as much of the excess away as possible. If you can remove the wire basket without disturbing the root ball, do it. If roots have been circling around in the container, cut them and fluff them out so they do not continue growing so that they circle inside the hole and become girdling roots later in the life of the tree.&nbsp;

Backfill the hole with the same soil that was removed.&nbsp;

Amendments such as peat moss likely do more harm than good. Make sure the soil that goes back is loosened - no clods or clumps. Add water as you fill to ensure good root to soil contact and prevent air pockets. There is no need to fertilize at planting.&nbsp;

Don't cut back the branches of a tree after planting except those that are rubbing or damaged.&nbsp;

The leaf buds release a hormone that encourages root growth. If the tree is cut back, the reduced number of leaf buds results in less hormone released and therefore fewer roots being formed.&nbsp;

Then, water once a week for the first season if there is insufficient rainfall.&nbsp;

Mulch should be 2-4 inches deep and cover an area 2 to 3 times the diameter of the root ball. Mulching reduces competition from other plants, conserves moisture and keeps soil temperature closer to what the plants' roots prefer.&nbsp;

Trees will establish more quickly and grow faster if they are not staked. However, larger trees or those in windy locations may need to be staked the first year. Movement is necessary for the trunk to become strong. Staking should be designed to limit movement of the root ball rather than immobilize the trunk.&nbsp;

Upham and his colleagues in K-State’s Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly Horticulture Newsletter with tips for maintaining gardens and home landscapes. UPDATE: As of 3:20 pm, according to Riley County Fire District #1 the fire is 95% contained with no evacuations and no injuries being reported.&nbsp;

Additional mutual aid has been supplied by Wabaunsee County Fire and Heinen Brother Agra Services.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

RILEY COUNTY - Fire has burned hundreds of acres on Monday afternoon east of K177 between Manhattan and Interstate 70.

Volunteer firefighters from Riley and Geary counties along with the Kansas Forest Service have responded to fight the growing wildfire.

Crews were called out to the report of a fire that started in the median of K177 and then jumped the northbound lanes and started burning the pasture to the east of the highway.

As of 2:40 p.m. the fire 75% contained, and crews continue to work to extinguish the fire.&nbsp;

Riley County Fire District #1 has posted a reminder that the fire danger is HIGH today. Remember:

Call 9-1-1 right away if you see or suspect a wildfire.

FORT RILEY — On Monday just before 7 a.m., Fort Riley Military Police were called about an incident at Trooper Gate.

Initial information provided states that the suspect drove through the gate and was then stopped by the automatic vehicle barrier.&nbsp;

After the vehicle was stopped, the suspected exited the vehicle, and the situation then escalated, leading guards to shoot the suspect.

The driver of the vehicle received non-life-threatening injuries and is receiving medical attention.

Army CID and the Fort Riley Military Police are investigating the incident.

Chief Communications Officer Maggie Harris gave board members an outline of the
college’s marketing plan. The presentation highlighted how Barton is targeting
potential students with advertising and how the college is promoting their
events and what they have to offer. Harris noted digital media is increasing as
a platform to advertise on with applications like Facebook, YouTube and even
TikTok. 
Trustee Don Learned questioned the college’s use of TikTok, a social media, short-form
video hosting service owned by a Chinese company. TikTok has received criticism
over user privacy. The majority of the states have banned the application on
government-issued devices. Harris said Barton will continue to monitor
regulations regarding the usage of the app. "All of our 
competitors and peers are using it," said Harris. "We're just reaching 
our students where they're at. That is our goal...to find where they are
 and to reach them. I know there is a lot of controversy with it, and 
we're keeping track of all of those conversations." 
Learned was concerned from stories in the news regarding TikTok’s connections
to the Chinese government. While United States agencies continue to investigate the
security and use of TikTok, Barton Trustee Chairman Mike Johnson said the app is
still effective in marketing the college’s message to the younger population. "I
 think we all know of the stories that are in the news daily," said 
Johnson. "Honestly, I think we're going to see it take care of itself in
 the next year or two through regulation. Don, I agree with you. I think
 it's an issue, but I think we can't hamper our recruitment process when
 everyone else is still doing it." 
Along with digital advertising, Barton diversifies its marketing through
traditional media such as print, television and radio. The communications
department also looks at advertising opportunities through sponsorships and

WABAUNSEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after an arrest.

&nbsp;On Sunday, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division and the Sheriff’s Proactive Operational Response Team (S.P.O.R.T.) assisted the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office with the execution of a search warrant in the 100 block of Darling Street in Willard, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

During the execution of the search warrant, deputies found three stolen vehicles; a stolen ATV from Wabaunsee County, a stolen ATV from the City of Topeka and a stolen motorcycle from Riley County.&nbsp;

They also located multiple illegal narcotics including methamphetamine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and distribution items.

Deputies arrested 46-year-old Matthew J. Sumner and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of distribution of opiates and possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia.

Ebert Construction Co. Inc. of Wamego is the prime contractor and has scheduled this $10
million project to be completed in August, weather permitting.

Steps KanCare members can take to reduce risk of losing health coverage

GEARY COUNTY - On Sunday afternoon, the Junction City Police Department released additional details regarding the Saturday evening homicide.

The homicide victims have been identified as 75-year-old Valerie J. Krissman and 80-year-old Roland C. Krissman.

Earlier on Sunday, March 19, arrest warrants were issued for the arrest of 33-year-old Steven P. Pierce of Junction City and 29-year-old Kallie R. Peters, also of Junction City for 2 counts of Felony Murder, 2 counts of Aggravated Robbery and 1 count of Felony Theft.

Michigan State Patrol located and arrested both Pierce and Peters on the warrants issued and the pair are in custody in Michigan awaiting extradition back to Kansas.

Junction City Police Department says no other details will be release at this time.

Just before 8:30p.m. Saturday, police responded to the 700 block of W. 1st Street in Junction City in reference to a check welfare, according to a media release.

Officers located two subjects deceased inside of a residence. The deceased were identified as a 75-year-old white female and an 80-year-old white male, both residents of Junction City. 

The deaths are being investigated as Homicides, according to police.&nbsp;

The names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of the family. Autopsies have been scheduled for a later date.

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University’s Department of Animal Sciences and Industry is opening its doors this summer to high school students who have an interest in becoming leaders in the livestock industry and related careers.&nbsp;

Department officials have announced that applications are now open for the Kansas State University Animal Science Leadership Academy, known as KASLA, set for June 21-24 in Manhattan.&nbsp;

The academy is an intensive four-day educational experience designed to enhance the leadership skills and animal science knowledge of students in grades 9-12. The program is co-sponsored by the Livestock and Meat Industry Council, Inc.&nbsp;

Officials said only 20 students will be accepted for the 2023 session to ensure individualized attention from counselors, professors and industry leaders.&nbsp;

“This program is a great opportunity for future agriculture leaders to visit campus to get an inside look at the opportunities our department and the agriculture industry provides,” said Mike Day, head of the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry. “This program helps build the future of the livestock industry and we appreciate all the industry stakeholders and companies that contribute to the program to make it a success.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

This is the 14th year of the academy. Applications are due April 15 and can be found at<a></a><a href="http://asi.ksu.edu/kasla">asi.ksu.edu/kasla</a>. A $50 fee is due upon acceptance; additional costs are covered by the Livestock and Meat Industry Council.&nbsp;

The program’s itinerary features interactive workshops, tours and faculty mentor time with K-State professors. Industry leaders will also share their knowledge and expertise. Throughout the week, participants will work in teams to evaluate current events in the animal science industry, culminating in team presentations.&nbsp;
