RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged home-invasion break-in in Manhattan.

Just after 9:30p.m. Monday, officers filed a report for aggravated assault, battery, criminal damage to property, and criminal trespass in the 2000 block of College Heights Road in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Just after 9:30 p.m., a 17-year-old boy, a 19-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman reported a 26-year-old man and a 30-year-old man broke into a house and threatened the victims with guns following a fight between the parties earlier in the evening.

Police identified Vanda Vereen, 26, and Christopher Sims, 30, both of Fort Riley as the suspects and arrested them on requested charges of aggravated assault. Both remain confined in the Riley County Jail on total bonds of $10,000 each.

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The&nbsp;Cold&nbsp;Weather&nbsp;Rule, designed to help Kansans who are behind on their utility payments avoid disconnection during the winter months, will begin on Tuesday, November 1 and remain in effect through March 31.&nbsp;

With energy costs expected to rise this winter, the protections offered by the&nbsp;Cold&nbsp;Weather&nbsp;Rule&nbsp;could be more critical than ever in keeping individuals and families safe and connected. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), Midwest households heating with natural gas could see their bills increase by 33%. Those using electric heat could pay 8% more. If the&nbsp;weather&nbsp;is&nbsp;colder than expected, those numbers could be higher.

While the&nbsp;Cold&nbsp;Weather&nbsp;Rule&nbsp;is in effect, utility companies cannot disconnect a customer's service when local temperatures are forecast to drop below 35 degrees within the following 48-hour period. The&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;Corporation Commission, the agency that regulates public utilities in the state, implemented the&nbsp;rule&nbsp;in 1983 to prevent utility companies from disconnecting a customer's natural gas or electric service during periods of extreme&nbsp;cold.

The&nbsp;Cold&nbsp;Weather&nbsp;Rule&nbsp;also requires utility companies to offer a 12-month payment plan to allow consumers to maintain or re-establish service. Any residential customer with a past due balance will qualify for payment arrangements; however, it is the customer's responsibility to contact their gas or electric company to make those arrangements.

Payment plan terms to maintain or restore service require that customers agree to pay 1/12th of the total amount owed, 1/12th of the current bill, the full amount of any disconnection or reconnection fee, plus any applicable deposit to the utility. The remaining balance must be paid in equal payments over the next 11 months, in addition to the current monthly bill.

The good news is that in about a week or less it will all be over. The bad news is that the next cycle is a presidential election, so you have about six months before that gets cranked up. Unfortunately, the sheer volume of campaign ads and fliers turns many of us off or makes us numb to the candidates. I get that but you must fight through the urge to ignore all of it and tune it out. This is one of the most critical elections that we as an ag community have faced and this is a call for all hands on deck. It is true that all votes count but when it comes to agriculture that statement has never been truer. Candidates who support agriculture need your vote. Kansas is becoming increasingly urban and because of that voters in those areas are farther and farther away from agriculture. We are a democracy where the majority rules. Soon we could find ourselves having less of a voice over who represents us and, more importantly, what legislation gets passed. We know laws made in Topeka and Washington D.C. can have huge impacts on how we run our farms and ranches. It is important that we elect representatives that will have our best interests in mind and who understand our business. That is why the work Voters Organized To Elect Farm Bureau Friends does is so important. They take the opinions from the grassroots level and develop a list of candidates who are friendly to agriculture and will keep our best interests in mind. That work is not done in a couple of days but rather in a painstaking process, making sure that all voices are heard. However, that great work doesn’t mean anything if we don’t get out and vote for those candidates. While I would like you to vote for the people on that list, and I ask that you take the time to look at it, I just want you to exercise your right to vote. Historically those of us in rural areas have gotten out at higher levels than our urban counterparts, and that amplifies our voice. Lately, that has not been the case and is a trend we need to reverse. If you are really tired of the noise around the election, go vote now. Advanced voting is open, check with your county clerk to find out how. Then it is done and no matter what happens, your voice is heard. If you are like me and a traditionalist, make sure you get out and vote on Nov. 8. Every vote counts and every vote matters. We have seen it time and time again, even right here in Kansas. Please, look at the list of VOTE FBF endorsed candidates before you make your decision. I cannot stress just how important your vote is. It’s our chance to be a voice for Kansas.

Geary USD 475 school board members listened to a staff report on proposed locations for a new Early Childhood Center in the district. Federal grant funding could be sought to help with the cost of a proposed new facility on the site of the former Junction City High School or at a location north of the new JCHS.

The old high school site would have 13 acres available and either site could accommodate planned future expansion. The initial goal was to serve 65% of the early childhood population.&nbsp;

Land for a building near the new JCHS would have to be purchased while the District owns the former high school site already. Early Child Program staff were polled on preferred location with 60 of 63 staff members favoring the old high school location.

Federal grant funding could be sought to help with the cost of a proposed new facility on the site of the former Junction City High School or at a location north of the new JCHS.The old high school site would have 13 acres available and either site could accommodate planned future expansion. The initial goal was to serve 65% of the early childhood population.&nbsp;Land for a building near the new JCHS would have to be purchased while the District owns the former high school site already. Justin Aaron, Junction city, heads into the knockout round of "The Voice" on NBC beginning Monday. Aaron said they are three-way knockouts. "So you tune in at 7 p.m. and you will get to see me on the stage and if I get to go the next round." Live playoffs then follow the knockouts.

"I perform Gospel, Contemporary Christian and R &amp; B music. " Aaron began in music with his mother who has been a singer. "So she would always take me with her when she would go to her singing engagements and I would see how everyone was just so mesmerized by her singing and how everyone was just responding to what she was doing. I remember sitting in the front pew one day saying I want to do that one day." Aaron also credits former teacher Mary Louise Stahl with helping cultivate his love of music.

Aaron knows performing on 'The Voice' could put him on a new platform in getting his name out there.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Aaron is currently a paraprofessional at Junction City High School. He is a 2006 graduate of JCHS.

Junction City Police Department held their second annual Shop with A Cop Charity Trap Shoot Competition on Oct.&nbsp; 22nd. There were 31 shooters with over $2,100.00.

Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to mile marker 310 west bound I-70 in Geary County for a single vehicle injury accident. Nicholas D. Bressoud of Fort Riley, KS was traveling west in a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am when he hit a deceased deer in the roadway, causing the vehicle to fishtail and go down an embankment approximately 80 feet. Bresoud and his passenger were treated for minor injuries. A wrecker service responded and took possession of the vehicle.

On a media release dated Friday, October 28, the Riley County Police Department states a Corrections Sergeant for the department had been issued a notice to appear in Manhattan Municipal Court.

Sergeant Justin Borge, 38, was issued a notice to appear for an incident which occurred on September 26, 2022 in the 300 block of Anderson Avenue in Manhattan while Borge was off-duty.

Borge is reportedly charged with disorderly conduct following a reported argument with another man at a business.

Kansas State University Police Department investigated the reported incident, an gave their findings to the&nbsp; City of Manhattan Chief Prosecutor Mellissa Rundus who issued the notice to appear to Borge on Thursday.

RCPD Interim Director, Kurt Moldrup says, "We expect our employees to treat everyone with decency and respect, both on and off-duty.&nbsp;I trust Chief Prosecutor Rundus to gather all the facts about the incident and her process to make a just decision.”

Any internal discipline will be based on the findings of an investigation from the RCPD Internal Affairs Office.

Trick or treating and a parade were the focal point for the All Treats Day celebration in Junction City.

First there was a parade led by the Junction City High School Marching Band.

Then kids accompanied by their parents, trick or treated on North Washington, with merchants providing candy.

JCFD responded to a gas line main that had been struck at intersection of S. Washington and E. Chestnut St. around 2 p.m. JCFD advised that a 6” gas line was struck, and that KS Gas was notified. 

Crews evacuated the areas of the 100 and 200 block of South Washington St. and the 100 block of East Chestnut St. Barricades will be placed on East and West 1st Street, from Jefferson to Franklin, and the East and West Chestnut St. from Jefferson to Franklin. The estimated time of repairs was put at 4 hours.

The company will create 30 new jobs over the next five years with a $4 million investment to construct a new facility and purchase new semiconductor processing equipment.

“Radiation Detection Technologies’ investment shows that Kansas businesses are not just keeping up with technological trends – they’re setting them,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“It’s clear that my administration’s laser-sharp focus on economic development is paying dividends and is ensuring our state’s economy remains modern and innovative in a rapidly changing world.”

RDT was founded in 2011 by the Kansas State University Semiconductor Materials and Radiological Technologies (SMART) Lab in Manhattan. RDT focuses on manufacturing state-of-the-art, high-quality semiconductor devices, semiconductor materials, radiation detectors, and electronic circuit technologies for use in multiple industries, including healthcare, defense, energy, and agriculture.

Semiconductor company announces $4M investment in MHK

During the early morning hours Thursday Geary County Sheriff's Office vehicles were the target of vandalism when tires were slashed on 11 patrol units while parked in the lot at 9th and Franklin streets.

According to the Sheriff's Department, after viewing security video, Justin Neinhaus, 36, of Grandview Plaza, was arrested by Sheriff's deputies in conjunction with Junction City Police Department and Grandview Plaza Police Department officers on requested charges including 10 counts of felony criminal damage to property, two misdemeanor counts of criminal damage to property and two counts of felony interference with a law enforcement officer. Damage to the Sheriff's vehicles is estimated to be approximately $12,000.

Junction City and Grandview Plaza police departments' vehicles were also damaged. In Grandview Plaza all four tires on each of three patrol cars were slashed. Each department has its own case against the suspect.
