Riley County Fire District #1 on Thursday via social media on the County Facebook page updated the information on the Carlson Road area fire that occurred in northern part of the county on Wednesday.&nbsp;

An estimated 2,000 acres burned but no one was injured, no livestock were lost and no structures have been damaged. Fire crews will continue to monitor the fire over the next several days.&nbsp;

Eleven Riley County Fire District #1 trucks, 30 local volunteer firefighters, and personnel from the Manhattan Fire Department, Kansas Forest Service, Engine 64, Fire District #1 of Johnson COunty, Kansas Wildland Task Force and the Army Corps of Engineers responded to the fire.

That fire also crossed the Big Blue River Wednesday night into Pottawatomie County as well. Local crews responded.

RILEY COUNTY—A large grass fire in the area near Carlson Road, north of Fancy Creek in northern Riley County burned approximately 1500 acres on Wednesday, according to Riley County Fire District 1.

Two properties were evacuated. Volunteers remained on the scene overnight.

There are no injuries. Officials have not reported what started the fire.

&nbsp;Gusty northwest winds will increase again Thursday as relative humidity decreases, resulting in another afternoon of extreme fire danger, according to the National Weather Service.

Grass fire consumes hundreds of acres in Riley County 

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) - Customers were evacuated from the Manhattan Goodwill on Thursday afternoon after a semi-trailer caught fire in its loading dock.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://cityofmhk.com/232/Manhattan-Fire-Department" target="_blank">Manhattan Fire Department</a>&nbsp;says on Thursday, April 7, crews responded to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mokangoodwill.org/locations/goodwill-manhattan" target="_blank">Goodwill&nbsp;</a>at 421 E Poyntz Ave. with reports of a fire.

When crews arrived, they said they found a semi-trailer in the Goodwill’s loading dock had caught on fire.

MFD said the fire has been found to be accidental and was started from discarded smoking materials.

No injuries were reported, however, customers were evacuated.

Members of the Geary County Fish &amp; Game Association will meet Monday at 6 p.m.&nbsp; They will gather at Sportsman's Acres and then go out to do a clean-up on the nearby K-244 Spur highway. Their last clean-up was in October.

K-244 Spur clean-up is on the agenda for Fish & Game

Operation Clean Sweep will be hosted by the City of Junction City CLEAN Team on Saturday, April 23rd from 8 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are needed.

This is an effort by a group of volunteers undertaken through Nazarene Compassionate Ministries International.&nbsp; The local spokesperson Kim Roberts, said that they were contacted by the Nazarene organization. "Just said they needed some in Poland, so we told them we'd get them ready to go and they brought a truck in through Convoy of Hope."

UPU Industries provided pallets and shrink wrap for the shipping project. The volunteers got their boxes carrying the care kits to UPU.&nbsp;

Roberts said 11 pallets containing a total of 462 banana boxes carrying a total 2,772 care kits were prepared. Each kit is shared between 2-3 people. Roberts estimated with this shipment probably more than 5,500 people were being helped.&nbsp;

Care kits like this have been prepared by the local group for use in connection with different refugee or disaster events for the past six or seven years.

JUNCTION CITY — At Geary County Schools USD 475’s recent State of Education event, Dr. Deb Gustafson, associate superintendent, highlighted the school district’s accomplishments over the past two years since the COVID pandemic started.

In the Spring of 2020, USD 475 joined the ranks of school districts across the nation forced to discontinue in-person learning due to the COVID pandemic.

“We immediately went to work to create and establish an online learning platform and engaged students with their teachers by the beginning of April 2020,” Gustafson said.

While many schools across Kansas and the nation continued with the online learning platform when school opened in the Fall of 2020, USD 475 re-opened their doors for in-person learning. The school district utilized the spring and summer of 2020 determining how to create an atmosphere to mitigate the conditions associated with COVID to the maximum extent possible.

“In our conversations with personnel and the community, it was evident that our students needed to be back in school in front of their teachers and that parents needed to return to work,” Gustafson said. “We felt that our only option was to re-open our schools and welcome back students.”

She added: “Due to the cooperation of our resilient teachers, dedicated support staff, cooperative parents and amazing students, USD 475 experienced very little interruption to learning during the span of the pandemic. Our teachers continued to teach and our students continued to learn. We experienced challenges, and yet we found ways to overcome them. While lower academic performances and learning losses known as the ‘COVID slide’ have become buzz words across the nation, students in USD 475 have demonstrated academic growth on their Kansas State Assessments.”

Each public school in the state is rated by the State of Kansas on an accountability report for performance on the Kansas Assessment Program (KAP) test given to students in grades 3-8 and 10 in Math, English Language Arts, and also in grades 5, 8 and 11 for Science. Grades 4, 7 and 11 also participate in the History, Government and Social Studies Test. The KAP summative assessment is given in the spring and students score in the categories of a 4, 3, 2 or 1. The state and district goal is for students to score a 3 or 4, which exhibits sufficient or exemplary status in standard mastery.

USD 475 Geary County Schools said that their students exceeded the State of Kansas student percentages of students scoring a 3 or 4 in all subject areas in at least one category during 2021 assessments.

“During the pandemic, while most schools across the state experienced the ‘COVID slide,’ our students demonstrated a 2 percent growth in performance across the board,” Gustafson said. “We are proud of our students and staff and look forward to maintaining this momentum during our Spring 2022 assessments.”

Just before 10a.m. Wednesday, officers filed reports for criminal damage to property and burglary in the 400 block of Knox Lane in Manhattan.

The City of Manhattan reported an unknown suspect cut through the fence to a maintenance building, broke into the building, and stole a Dewalt hammer drill, impact driver, and batteries. 

The estimated total loss associated with these cases is approximately $1,060. Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Junction City Commissioners have voted to commit up to $10,000 to support a Main Street program to help business facades in the downtown. The funds would be provided as needed during the project.&nbsp;

Junction City Main Street Interim Director Jerry Lonegran said the funds would help create a pool of $30,000, "which would be used for a&nbsp; facade - beautification kind of program." Lonergan said Main Street has their organizational things in place, and it's time to move forward on something which could have a "quick and immediate impact." The remainder of the money would include $10,000 budgeted&nbsp; by Main Street and $10,000 from the County.

Teresa Bramlage is chair of the Design Committee and architect Bruce MacMillan is helping as well. Lonergan said Main Street anticipates creating a beautification program, and he cited examples. "Design and permit fees, concrete work, door replacement and exterior cleaning, just things that make the beautiful limestone buildings that make up Junction City's downtown come alive and have an immediate positive impact on people that come downtown or drive through Junction City."

This would be a matching grant program with building owners matching the grant money dollar for dollar. Lonergan added that ultimately it would be a $60,000 investment in the appearance of downtown Junction City.

The U.S. Army and Fort Riley will host a public meeting Thursday at 6 p.m., to discuss plans to remove munitions and explosives of concern (MEC) from the Camp Forsyth Landfill Area 2 Munitions Response Site at Fort Riley.

A munitions response site (MRS) is a specific location that is known to require munitions removal or other response due to the presence of known or suspected munitions and explosives of concern (MEC), such as unexploded ordnance, discarded military munitions, or munitions components, like TNT.

The Camp Forsyth MRS encompasses 123 acres and lies along the southwestern boundary of Fort Riley and extends into the Republican River, the Republican Flats floodplain and Breakneck Creek.

The public and all interested parties are invited to join the meeting to learn more about the MEC removal program, where the work will be completed, the schedule of activities, and important health and safety measures the U.S. Army will be conducting in relation to MEC removal activities. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions about the upcoming work.

Jennifer Larrea-Acosta, a Junction City High School Senior in the Fine Arts/Human Services Academy, was recognized on April 6 as the JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s Student of the Month.

Marcie Fiorentino, JCHS Freshman Success Academy and the Optimist Club’s Chairperson for the Student of the Month, stated that “Jennifer was born in Junction City; is one of five girls in her family; is a Cluster Ambassador and is interning at Sheridan Elementary School. Jennifer plans to attend Emporia State University in the teacher education program to be trained and licensed as an elementary teacher.”

While it may not continue on into April and May, it was a great relief to have above normal precipitation for the area in March. After four consecutive months of below normal precipitation, having a month that was nearly 50% above normal was a true blessing. Other than that, March was pretty much “normal”.

The average daily high for March was 56.3, 0.2 of a degree above normal. The average overnight low was 33.6, 0.8 of a degree above normal. This gave us a monthly mean temperature of 45.0, 0.6 of a degree above normal. Many local residents have commented that spring is late this year. In reality, this year is far more normal than the past couple of springs. March of 2021 was 4.7 degrees above normal and March 2020 was 4.2 degrees above normal. 

This resulted in the past two years having spring being early. While we have had some warm days, they have often been immediately followed by normal or below normal temperatures which have kept plant development slowed to a more normal pace. The highest temperature in March was 82 on the 29th. The lowest temperature was the morning low of 8 on the 12th. There was one temperature record set during March. The low of 56 on the 21st set a new record high low temperature for that date. The old record was 53 set in 2011. The hottest March on record was in 2012 when we had a monthly mean temperature of 57.5, 12.5 degrees warmer than this year. The coldest March was in 1960 when we had a monthly mean temperature of 31.3, 13.7 degrees colder than this year.

Four different precipitation events were spaced nicely throughout the month and resulted in a total of 2.94 inches or liquid precipitation at Milford Lake and 2.64 inches in Junction City. Normal for March is 2.00 inches. This helped reduce the year to date deficit we have experienced. Normal precipitation for January through March is 3.83 and we’ve received 3.36 inches at Milford Lake and 3.64 inches in Junction City. 

Two of those precipitation events involved snow. March snowfall was 7.3 inches, well above the average March snowfall of 3.1 inches. This gave us a seasonal total of 14.9 inches. This is still below the long term average of 17.3 inches. And yes, April can have snow with a long term average of 0.7 of an inch and even May has a long term average of 0.1 of an inch.

April brings us our average last frost date, but not our frost free date, as well as increasing precipitation. Average daily highs for April increase from 63 on the 1st to 68 on the 30th. Average overnight low on April Fool’s Day is 38 and has warmed to 47 by the end of the month. Average last frost date is April 15th. However, since 1949 that has ranged from as early as March 10, in 2012, to as late as May 14, in 1953. Analyzing the last frost date using a 30 year moving average, we find that the last frost date has moved earlier by nearly a full week over the last 40 years. However, we still generally feel that our frost free date is around May 10th. Average April rainfall is 3.15 inches as we move into thunderstorm and severe weather season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities are investigating the theft of a car from a car rental location in Manhattan.

Just before 8a.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for theft, criminal damage to property and criminal trespass in the 1800 block of Tuttle Creek Blvd. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Hertz Rental, Lewis Automotive Group and a 32-year-old man reported an unknown suspect broke into a lockbox and stole nine sets of keys, then a gray 2022 Dodge Charger. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $46,750. The car was later located unoccupied by Springfield Mo. Police in the 1700 block of W. Battlefield Road. in Springfield. 

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

1st District Congressman Tracey Mann will host a Town Hall meeting at the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library on Tuesday, April 19th at 8 a.m.

Also on the 19th Mann will host a Town Hall meeting in Riley County at 9 :15 a.m. at Pottorf Hall in Manhattan, and in Pottawatomie County in the Sunflower Room at 612 East Campbell St. in Westmoreland at 11 a.m.

Mann will have a Town Hall meeting in Abilene on Monday, April 18th, at the Greyhound Hall of Fame at 4:45 p.m.

Geary County Human Resources / Special Projects Director Crystal Malchose will remain in the County's employment. She recently announced that she was stepping down April 15th to accept a similar position with Pawnee Mental Health Services. Malchose confirmed however, for JC Post on Tuesday, that she has rescinded her resignation.

Malchose said there were multiple reasons for her decision including feedback received from leadership at the County offices and from some current and former employees, plus members of the community ,"that appreciate what I've done thus far and would like me to continue working to improve the atmosphere, not only for the employees but the public perception of county government as a whole." Malchose added that if that many people thought she was doing a good job that she would maintain it and&nbsp; continue to move forward.&nbsp;

Malchose did receive more funding for her salary but County Commission Chair Alex Tyson confirmed it was an amount already in her budget. Malchose said county officials did not offer her a pay raise to stay in the job. "But I did ask for one if I were to stay and they did grant me that."

Malchose has been employed by the County for approximately 10 months.

County HR Director rescinds her resignation 

Geary County Commissioner Keith Ascher has confirmed that he is recovering well from recent surgery. He has missed the last two county commission meetings.

The concept of a new logo for the entire county received discussion at the Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau Advisory Committee meeting on Tuesday at the CVB offices. Donna Price, CVB Director, explained it could start with the county and then go across the local area. "Anybody that wants to be involved we would love to have them."&nbsp; The idea is to have one logo that allows people to understand that represents Junction City and Geary County. Grandview Plaza, Milford and USD 475 could be included if there is interest.

Input will be sought on this idea from potential stakeholders such as the cities and school district, plus the public.

The CVB is also considering a new sign on the outside of the building at 222 West 6th Street where they are located.&nbsp; It was clear from discussion at their meeting on Tuesday that they plan to remain at that site. 

County Commissioner Trish Giordano noted that the two CVB employees both enjoy working in that building and have worked well with the Chamber of Commerce and EDC in that facility. She confirmed that the County wants the CVB to stay at&nbsp; their current location. "Yes, yes, they're doing well here, and I think it's a good place, it's good visibility, and once we get that sign up I think that will help things as well. " In the past there have been discussions about moving the CVB to another location in the downtown area.

Annual Float Your Boat races are being scheduled Aug. 20th at the swimming beach area near the South Boat Ramp at Milford State Park by the Geary County Convention &amp; Visitor's Bureau.

Float Your Boat is where participants build cardboard boats and compete in timed events.&nbsp;

The CVB Advisory Committee is also recommending that $500 in funding should be provided to support the Junction City Rodeo. The rodeo is held in July.

Police have identified the 9-year old victim as Terrance&nbsp; Resto. He was reported stable and alert following surgery at a Wichita hospital.

Junction City Police Captain Cory Odell confirms that two brothers, ages 9 and 11,"were messing around in some capacity with a loaded firearm and it appears that one accidently shot the other."

Odell said the firearm involved was a handgun and the 9-year old suffered a wound to the body. The boy was transported by EMS to Geary Community Hospital and then life flighted to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita for treatment.

Odell indicated that the location where the shooting occurred was outside of the house where the boys lived at 2007 Northwind Drive.

The name of the 9-year old has not yet been released by authorities.

Odell noted that authorities received a call just after 7 p.m. about a 9-year old boy that had suffered a possible gunshot wound.&nbsp; The boy suffered a serious injury, was stabilized and flown to a hospital.&nbsp;Another boy, a sibling, was not injured in the incident.

Authorities are still conducting an investigation at the scene.&nbsp;
