MANHATTAN — A Kansas State University student has presented his cancer research at a national meeting attended by some of the most respected scientists in his field. Carson Gido, junior in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/bmb/">biochemistry and molecular biophysics</a>,&nbsp;Manhattan, gave the poster presentation "Structural Basis for Nanomolar-Affinity Inhibition of Neutrophil Serine Protease Activity by the S. aureus EAP Domain Protein, Eap1" at the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Annual Meeting April 2-5 in Philadelphia. Gido also was selected to present his research at Undergraduate Research Days. The virtual event, in early March, showcased some of the best undergraduate research being conducted at four-year public universities in Kansas. "It felt good to be selected," Gido said. "I had been looking for an opportunity to share what we do." Gido works with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/bmb/department/directory/bgeisbrecht/index.html">Brian Geisbrecht</a>, professor of biochemistry and molecular biophysics, studying a white blood cell enzyme that, when over-activated, can cause lung cancer and other lung diseases. According to Gido, the enzyme, called neutrophil elastase, can be inhibited, or blocked, by a molecule produced by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. The bacterial molecule, called Eap1, binds to neutrophil elastase. The research team has solved the structure of the molecules bound to one another. "The molecules are sub-microscopic and therefore difficult to see and study," Gido said. "So, we use a technique called X-ray crystallography, where we isolate them, form them into a crystal and then do experiments that determine their structure and how they interact with each other." Gido said the researchers hope their work will inspire ideas for designing a drug that inhibits neutrophil elastase and reduces tumor proliferation. Gido's research experience and travel to the meeting were supported by the university's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cancer.k-state.edu/">Johnson Cancer Research Center</a>. Gido is the recipient of an Undergraduate Cancer Research Award from the center. "I'm really grateful for the center's support," Gido said. "The meeting was such a great experience for me. Junction City Animal Shelter will host a free vaccine clinic on Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. at 201 12th Street in Milford. They are working with #Petco Love Initiative to distribute the DAPPV Canine and HCP Feline vaccines.&nbsp;

It all began on Friday with one large blaze on the Government Hill area covering about 280 acres and another near McDowell Creek approximately 100-130 acres. Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges confirmed that firefighters responded about 10 p.m. Saturday to the Clarks Creek Road area to put out a fire that had rekindled&nbsp; from the Government Hill blaze. There were no injuries to people and no buildings were lost.&nbsp;

Saturday night Geary, Riley and Wabaunsee County all had personnel helping put out a rekindled blaze north of I-70 near mile post 318.&nbsp;

Sunday morning abou 5:30 Geary County rural firefighters went to Eagle Ridge Road in the Milford Township in the K-57 area where a detached shed was fully engulfed in fire. The structure contained chickens and other fowl that were lost.&nbsp; The cause of the fire was attributed to the use of heat lamps and straw. Berges noted that it was the second straight early Sunday morning where that type of case had occurred. One week earlier a similar fire had occurred in a garage near Old Milford Road where four baby chickens were lost.

Conditions are expected to remain windy this week.

Rural firefighters respond to multiple calls 

Junction City has received a March sales tax increment totaling $1,011,294.67. That's the 20th highest month on record.&nbsp;

According to City Finance Director Lindsay Miller there was a decrease from March 2021 of 11.56% but the City is still ahead of the budget. This was the second highest month for March Use Tax. The revenues are 33% ahead of budget so far this year, and only slightly down behind las year of .31-hundredths of one percent.&nbsp; So far this year is looking strong.

More than 200 people filled the majority of the seats at 25 tables set up for the Freedom Fest JC fundraiser Saturday night in the Municipal Auditorium. There was dinner and dancing to music by Platinum Express featuring JJ Johnson and Motown type music as part of their journey "Keeping the Music Alive."

Freedom Fest JC Committee Co-Chair Nate Butler said their goal was to break even or walk away with a little bit of fundraising money from the event. "This was good, this was more of a PR kind of event. We were hoping that we would break even, we have broke even. We are actually making a little bit more, which is good."&nbsp;

Co-Chair Bob Storey said preparations for the July Fourth celebration are going well and the committee is growing. "Getting volunteers is our biggest thing and just getting it going. " He added it's steamrolling and it is going. As&nbsp; far as the event Saturday evening Storey cited the band and seeing the community turnout as highlights for him.

Marketing and Events Coordinator Travis Godfrey stated that the event was awesome and great for the community to attend. He noted that Freedom Fest JC is getting close to their budget, and checks and pledges are coming in for the celebration, June 30th through July 4th. Future fundraisers will include a street dance and a golf tournament.&nbsp;

Godfrey is excited about the scheduled performance of Casi Joy on July 4th during the celebration. He has seen her perform two times in Kansas City including at Arrowhead Stadium.&nbsp; "She just has a way with captivating an audience and bringing a patriotic feel to everything as well, so I think she'll be great for downtown Junction City on July 4th."

Freedom Fest JC activities begin with the carnival on the evening of June 30th and continue with concerts, vendors and special act performances by Hog Diggity Dogs and Agri Puppets, along with others. There will be a fireworks show Saturday night July 2nd and Monday evening July 4th.&nbsp;

Concert performers will range from Paramount and Rock Gods to Brandon Estelle and Rhett Walker plus headliner Casi Joy on July 4th.

The times on the burglaries ranged from 7:59 a.m. to 1 p.m.

SALINE COUNTY—Two Riley County Police department officers are being recognized for assisting at the scene of a semi accident on Interstate 70.&nbsp;

On Thursday, RCPD Sgt. Brian London and Officer Matthew Pfrang were traveling back to Manhattan with two other civilian employees after visiting another agency, according to a social media report from the agency.

They came across an overturned semi on Interstate 70 in Saline County.&nbsp;Strong winds toppled the 2017 Freightliner. The two from the RCPD immediately stopped since no other first responders had yet arrived on the scene.

&nbsp;Ultimately, the Kansas Highway Patrol and local officers arrived on scene snd took over.&nbsp; The driver of the tractor-trailer rig identified as Curtis L. Musgrove, 62, of Beloit was able to walk away but was transported to Salina Regional Health Center for an examination, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

While not in uniform or on-duty in their normal capacities, the two from the RCPD saw a need to help and responded without hesitation.&nbsp;

Geary County Commissioners will meet from 10 a.m. until about noon on Monday at the County Office Building. The meeting agenda includes a weekly report from County Clerk Rebecca Nordyke, and they will meet with Tami Robison, Finance Officer, on the 2022 audit and American Recovery Program Act funds.

These students in grades 6-12 will shoot targets per week for eight weeks with the scores posted&nbsp; to the Clay Target League website for virtual competition with other schools.

Locally, Geary County Fish &amp; Game Association hosts or coaches three area school teams. Mike Johnson is the head coach for Chapman with 22 team members, BJ Solander is head coach for a Homeschool team with 16 members who travel from as far away as the Lincoln, KS area and White City shoots at Sportsman's Acres with eight team members and provides their own coaches. These teams primarily shoot on Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons.

Other Association members who assist in coaching, scoring or providing safety supervision are Kay Johnson, Tracy McCamury, Gary Pelcak, Gordon Allen, Keith Fitzgerald, Shane Houle and Larry George.

Drug Enforcement Administration and Kansas law enforcement partners have joined together to find drug traffickers behind overdoses. The One Pill Can Initiative aims to reduce the supply of deadly counterfeit fentanyl pills.

The Drug Enforcement Administration St. Louis Division announced Fridayday an intelligence data-driven operation with local law enforcement partners in northeast Kansas to address the alarming increase in overdose events caused by counterfeit pills with fentanyl.

Statistics collected about overdoses and overdose deaths in the region indicated shortcomings in pursuing counterfeit pills and fentanyl investigations. The Northeast Kansas One Pill Can Kill Initiative aims to gather data from these overdose events to help combat the drug trafficking organizations operating in the area.

“Kansas hasn’t escaped the deadly impact counterfeit pills are having on communities nationwide,” said Special Agent in Charge Michael A. Davis, head of the DEA division that includes the states of Kansas and Missouri. “Unfortunately, rural police departments often don’t have the manpower or resources to investigate overdoses. Working together by sharing intelligence gathered by law enforcement officers, though, will help us target and arrest the people distributing these deadly fake pills.”

Some of the many participating agencies in the initiative include the Junction City Police Department, Geary County Sheriff's Office, Riley County Police Department, Kansas State University, Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office, Wamego Police Department, Dickinson County Sheriff's Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

There were no injuries and as of Friday evening no major building damage had been reported.

Berges said Geary County and Fort Riley Fire Departments responded to the Government Hill fire and Riley County Rural Fire worked the blaze near the McDowell exit.&nbsp; A state task force that had been staged in Salina responded with four trucks, White City provided assistance and there was air support from western Kansas. "It&nbsp; did several air drops in areas that we could not get access to with our fire units. " Estimated acreage of the two fire is still unknown but Berges confirmed both covered a large area.

As of mid-evening Friday the two fires were contained but firefighters planned to spend the night watching those areas.

Berges credited volunteers for their help and some farmers with supplying water so fire trucks could be refilled.&nbsp;

Rural firefighters are on the scene of a grass fire east of Junction City near mile marker 300. No injuries have been reported.

Hydrant testing by the Junction City Fire Department will resume next week between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Fire Chief Jason Lankas said City hydrants will be tested to ensure that they're operable and able to produce the required water pressure when needed to supply water for firefighting purposes.

Because the testing must be done during normal operating hours, it is impossible to know in advance just where or when exactly testing will take place in any specific area.

Opening hydrants can sometimes cause a temporary discoloration of water in nearby homes. The discoloration is not harmful in any way and can be cleared by running the water for just a few minutes.

This testing ensures the protection of Junction City residents and is an evaluation indicator used by the Insurance Services Organization which rates cities according to the fire protection they offer. The recent ISO rating resulted in the elevation of the City of Junction City to a Class 3 protection rating. By maintaining a system of checks and maintenance on the City's fire protection assets the Fire Department is working to maintain and potentially lower the overall ISO's current rating.

The following areas is where this year’s testing of hydrants will be;

--1st concentration - Ash Street north to HWY K-18 and Spring Valley Rd. east to Eisenhower Drive

--2nd concentration- HWY 18 north to North Park Dr and Spring Valley Rd. east to Custer Rd.

--3rd concentration-Wildcat Ln north to Rucker Rd. and Munson Rd. east to Spring Valley Rd.

--4th concentration-Rucker Rd. north to city limits and Blue Jay Way east to HWY U.S. 77

Maintenance and testing will start Monday April 11th and be completed by May 27th.

MANHATTAN —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an altercation that sent a Manhattan man to the hospital.

Just before 3a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for aggravated robbery, aggravated battery, domestic battery, and criminal damage to property in the 700 block of Griffith Dr. in Manhattan.

A 22-year-old woman&nbsp; and a 24-year-old man&nbsp; as a victims and suspect were involved in a domestic altercation, according to the Riley County&nbsp; Police Department activity report.

It was reported the male hit the female, then a 23-year-old female suspect intervened, cut the male on the arm with a broken glass bottle, stole his Samsung cell phone, and left the scene. EMS transported the male victim to Via Christi for treatment of his significant arm injuries. He was later transferred to Stormont Via for further treatment, but is expected to recover.&nbsp;

Man hospitalized after attack with broken glass bottle

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for alleged sex crimes.

Just before 12:30a.m. Friday,&nbsp; police located 22-year-old Marvin Gatewood of Junction City in the 1100 block of Moro St. in Manhattan.

Gatewood was known to have an active Geary County warrant for attempted rape, attempted aggravated criminal sodomy, aggravated burglary, aggravated sexual battery, criminal restraint, and battery that held a $300,000 bond, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Officers arrested Gatewood on the warrant. He is being held in Geary County, according to online jail records.

RCPD: Junction City man jailed for alleged sex crimes

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State University’s Feed the Future Sustainable Intensification Innovation Lab has been awarded a five-year $12 million grant from United States Agency for International Development to establish a Center of Excellence that will enhance capacity of six universities to support agriculture-led growth in Haiti, according to K-State Research and Extension.

Vara Prasad, director of the innovation lab (also known as SIIL), said the grant will help to create the Center of Excellence on Mitigation, Adaptation, and Resilience to Climate-Change – or CEMARCH -- to foster agricultural education, training, research and extension through improved collaboration, communication and knowledge sharing.

The effort will address agricultural problems, and food and nutritional security in the Caribbean country.

According to Prasad, CEMARCH will focus on building institutional and human capacity so that Haiti is able to identify and seek solutions to its agricultural problems in partnership with U.S. universities.

“The SIIL is perfectly positioned with its international recognition and extensive experience to engage in a co-creation process with the six Haitian university partners and USAID-Haiti to successfully establish the CEMARCH,” said Ernie Minton, dean of K-State’s College of Agriculture and director of K-State Research and Extension.

SIIL will work closely with a consortium of six universities, including:

Together, those universities will help identify areas of research, curriculum development, and opportunities to engage the farming community and other local partners to redesign agri-food systems.

“Engaging with scholars, educators, policy makers, smallholder farmers, and building social capital and human resources is a hallmark of SIIL’s portfolio, and we have successfully done this in multiple countries around the world,” said Prasad, who is also a University Distinguished Professor and the R.O. Kruse endowed professor at K-State.

“We are fortunate that USAID values our work and is willing to support and invest in our research, education, outreach and capacity building approaches (so that we can) replicate these proven models in Haiti.”

According to Prasad, SIIL has built capacity around the world by training 160 students and establishing seven agricultural technology parks in Cambodia; and one in Senegal. The lab has plans to establish more in West Africa (including Burkina Faso, Niger, Ghana and Mali).

“This latest significant award to the Sustainable Intensification Innovation Lab is the perfect example of how K-State is focused on promoting collaborative, high-quality research programs around the world,” said David Rosowsky, vice president for research at K-State. “We are pleased to have worked with Prasad and (SIIL associate director Jan) Middendorf on this large grant and significant accomplishment.”

The SIIL at K-State will work with the Haitian institutions to develop a five-year plan based on the needs, priorities, opportunities and commitments of Haiti.

“This initiative gives us a great opportunity to emulate the land-grant model by working with local Haitian universities to foster agricultural education, training, research and extension,” Middendorf said. “We will also work toward improving collaboration, coordination, and knowledge sharing to concentrate on Haiti’s food and nutritional security challenges, especially during these very challenging times.”

Riley County Fire District #1 on Thursday via social media on the County Facebook page updated the information on the Carlson Road area fire that occurred in northern part of the county on Wednesday.&nbsp;

An estimated 2,000 acres burned but no one was injured, no livestock were lost and no structures have been damaged. Fire crews will continue to monitor the fire over the next several days.&nbsp;

Eleven Riley County Fire District #1 trucks, 30 local volunteer firefighters, and personnel from the Manhattan Fire Department, Kansas Forest Service, Engine 64, Fire District #1 of Johnson COunty, Kansas Wildland Task Force and the Army Corps of Engineers responded to the fire.

That fire also crossed the Big Blue River Wednesday night into Pottawatomie County as well. Local crews responded.

Two properties were evacuated. Volunteers remained on the scene overnight.

Grass fire consumes hundreds of acres in Riley County 

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) - Customers were evacuated from the Manhattan Goodwill on Thursday afternoon after a semi-trailer caught fire in its loading dock.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://cityofmhk.com/232/Manhattan-Fire-Department" target="_blank">Manhattan Fire Department</a>&nbsp;says on Thursday, April 7, crews responded to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mokangoodwill.org/locations/goodwill-manhattan" target="_blank">Goodwill&nbsp;</a>at 421 E Poyntz Ave. with reports of a fire.

When crews arrived, they said they found a semi-trailer in the Goodwill’s loading dock had caught on fire.

MFD said the fire has been found to be accidental and was started from discarded smoking materials.

No injuries were reported, however, customers were evacuated.

(WIBW) - Customers were evacuated from the Manhattan Goodwill on Thursday afternoon after a semi-trailer caught fire in its loading dock.The&nbsp;<a href="https://cityofmhk.com/232/Manhattan-Fire-Department" target="_blank">Manhattan Fire Department</a>&nbsp;says on Thursday, April 7, crews responded to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mokangoodwill.org/locations/goodwill-manhattan" target="_blank">Goodwill&nbsp;</a>at 421 E Poyntz Ave. with reports of a fire.When crews arrived, they said they found a semi-trailer in the Goodwill’s loading dock had caught on fire.MFD said the fire has been found to be accidental and was started from discarded smoking materials.No injuries were reported, however, customers were evacuated.

Members of the Geary County Fish &amp; Game Association will meet Monday at 6 p.m.&nbsp; They will gather at Sportsman's Acres and then go out to do a clean-up on the nearby K-244 Spur highway. Their last clean-up was in October.

According to the Association's newsletter there were 22 students&nbsp; that braved the cold temperatures on March 12th for the Hunter Education Field Day at Sportsman's Acres. The next class will be April 16th.
