"We do have a big problem with quality care in our area. " The demand exists not only in Geary, but also in Riley and Pottawatomie counties.&nbsp;

"We are only serving 20% of the children that need quality, certified childcare, said Giordano. "Low pay and incentives for childcare workers, costs of running a child care operation and certifications are factors in this issue.&nbsp;

Giordano noted that Riley already has a task force working on the issue and that is something she would like to do to provide incentives, grants and free training to encourage people to become childcare providers. She confirmed that she sees a move to form a task force in Geary County.

Giordano added this is not just a parent issue but also an economic development issue. If parents cannot work they're unable to have disposable income to spend in the community. "Also, employers can't find people to work if those people can't find childcare. "

Child care a pressing need in and around Geary County

MANHATTAN —Authorities are working to determine the cause of a fire at a home in Manhattan.

Just before 12:30 p.m. on Sunday the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to 2911 Dondee Drive for a report of a structure fire, according to Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Almes.

Upon arrival, crews found a one-story single-family dwelling with light smoke showing from the rear. The home was searched for occupants and crews extinguished a stove fire that had spread into the hood, and then to the outside of the structure.

The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes.  A total of 16 firefighters responded on 6 fire apparatus with the last units clearing just after 3:00 p.m.

One occupant was evaluated on scene by Riley County EMS for smoke inhalation.  Five dogs and the occupant exited the structure before our arrival, and another dog was removed uninjured after the fire was extinguished.

Loss is estimated at $5,000 to contents and $20,000 to the structure. The owner is listed as Paul Nobbe Jr. of Honolulu, HI.&nbsp;

Kitchen fire caused $25,000 damage at home in Manhattan

This is the time of year, in April when farm producers often do their agricultural burning. Garry Berges, Geary County Rural Fire Chief, said some of that has started in recent days but most of it usually occurs in April. "The farmers are out. They want a little bit of green grass to start growing and so they'll go out and burn their pastures. " A primary reason is to create new vegetation for livestock on those lands.&nbsp;

Berges said his office has been hearing that unless more moisture is received most of the farmers will not be burning this year. "It was that way last year, plus when they finally did get some moisture it was too windy, too rainy too much."

State law prohibits the burning of brush piles in the Flint Hills in April. Geary County is a part of the Flint Hills.&nbsp;

To register for a controlled agricultural burn call the Emergency Management Office at 784-238-1290 to find out if the conditions are or are not favorable and then if they've got the permit they can burn. Berges said you will be asked how many people do you have to help burn and about the available water supply. Authorities do not want one or two people trying to burn a large acreage area, but Berges indicated often farmers work with nearby land owners and work together on the project.

"We try, if possible, if it's going to be for a long period of time or along an interstate to try and get law enforcement involved to try and slow traffic down, said Berges. He also noted that KDOT will often put signs on their billboards warning of smoke in the area. "We try to keep smoke away from the highways just by the wind direction. According to information from the County Administration, the Departments returning to the courthouse will include the county clerk, treasurer, register of deeds, appraiser, emergency management, and GIS/IT ( global information services / information technology ). The planning and zoning department will also return to the courthouse from its temporary headquarters in the sheriff's office.

The courthouse will remain open during the move to accommodate members of the public who have business with Dickinson County District Court, Community Corrections, Court Services or the county attorney's office.

The courthouse has been undergoing an extensive remodeling process since Feb. 2021, following construction of the new jail and sheriff's department. An open house will be scheduled in coming weeks after the remodeled building is totally finished.

Displaced Dickinson County offices will return to the courthouse April 4-5

In an era of slowing college enrollments nationwide, Kansas State University’s Aerospace and Technology Campus in Salina, Kansas, recently broke ground for a new 104-bed residence hall as rising enrollment intensifies students’ challenge of finding available housing in the community.

It’s the latest chapter in a season of growth for the campus. In response to changes in the aerospace and technology industries, K-State Salina added two new academic degrees and — with the philanthropic support of donors — 17 aircraft to its fleet in the past year.

The new residence hall is another substantial strategic development on campus and enhances the accessibility for prospective students who require housing.

“This new residence hall is another step forward in establishing our campus as a global aerospace leader,” said Dean Alysia Starkey, K-State Salina dean and CEO. “Studies show students earn better grades and are more likely to finish their degrees when living on campus. This ideal space allows our students to build their network, further their goals and find support that is important to them. When students are empowered by a positive community, they become leaders of tomorrow.”

Dean Starkey, the dean’s advisory council, alumni, and representatives from KSU Foundation and Hutton Corporation gathered March 25 to break ground on the $9.1 million project.

“K-State Salina’s commitment to the community and its enrollment growth is realized by the construction of this new residence hall,” said Tim Rogers, executive director of the Salina Airport Authority. “This not only helps students but reduces the housing pressure in Salina and benefits the Kansas economy from increased enrollment. The success of K-State Salina has a positive impact on our local community and the surrounding region.”&nbsp;

Construction will begin north of the existing residence halls and student union in April 2022 with an expected completion in August 2023.

“This is exciting for the K-State Salina campus and we are pleased to accelerate with an integrated design-build process to address rising enrollments,” said Greg Lohrentz, senior vice president of operations and finance at the KSU Foundation. “As the university’s strategic real estate partner, we appreciate the momentum that building this new dorm will bring to the university and for students wanting to launch their futures at K-State Salina. And the university will own the residence hall once the project financing is paid.”

Agenda items for the Geary County Commission meeting on Monday will range from a proposed conditional use permit for an RV Park in rural Geary County north of Junction City to a discussion on handicap accessibility for the Geary County Courthouse.&nbsp; Commissioners will meet on the latter topic with Nikki Davenport, Court Administrator; Brett Deam, architect; and Corey Trumpp, Geary County Public Works Director at 1 p.m.

Some other agenda items include the monthly report from the Geary Community Hospital administrator to an executive session for legal matters regarding the hospital.&nbsp;

More than 50 pieces of art are on display during the USD 475 Art Show at the C.L. Hoover Opera House. The show, that began Friday evening, continues Saturday from 1-4 p.m.

Art teacher David Goheen said art from Junction City High and Middle Schools and from all the elementary schools in the district is included in the show. "It's a good show. We haven't had one for two years because of COVID so it's kind of nice to be back doing this again."

&nbsp;There was a good public turnout for the show on Friday, which is hosted by the Geary Community Schools Foundation. Executive Director Margie Pinaire explained that they collect the proceeds from a silent auction held in conjunction with the art show. "Those proceeds go to a scholarship for an art student at Junction City High School.

Pinaire enjoys the art work done by the students. "I always like kid's art. There's some sunflowers, I love those. There's a bird that maybe could be a Blue Jay. I'm not sure but I like it, some colorful dogs, there's a heart I like.

USD 475 students display art

The Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce has announced the postponement of the Legislative Coffee that was scheduled Saturday morning at the Municipal Auditorium.&nbsp;It will not be held. State Representative Lonnie Clark confirmed that the legislature is expected to be in session at least through late Friday night. It is not yet known if they will have to meet on Saturday.&nbsp;

During the Coffees area legislators talk about the issues and respond to questions&nbsp; from the public. But again....the Legislative Coffee on Saturday has been called off.

Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin a field survey on Monday to gather information that is necessary for the detailed design of the proposed improvement for the bridge replacement on J Hill Road over I-70 in Geary County.&nbsp; The survey will take place on the existing highway alignment.

KDOT expects the survey to be completed by May 2nd. Activities will include the use of survey instruments on the ground to determine locations of existing features within the corridor.&nbsp;

A member of the survey crew will contact property owners or tenants for permission to enter private property.&nbsp;

K-State food scientist shares tips for protecting your family&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee says preparing and storing food during a power outage can be “tricky.”&nbsp;

“Without a steady power source (such as a generator), food can be temperature-abused, which increases the risk for foodborne illness,” said Blakeslee, who also is coordinator of K-State’s&nbsp;<a href="http://www.rrc.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Rapid Response Center for Food Science</a>.&nbsp;

Foodborne bacteria grows most rapidly between 40 degrees and 140 degrees Fahrenheit, Blakeslee said – doubling in number in as little as 20 minutes. “This temperature range is often called the ‘Temperature Danger Zone,’” she said.&nbsp;

When power fails, “refrigerated and frozen food warms or thaws and can allow potential bacteria to grow and multiply,” Blakeslee said.&nbsp;

“Without power, the options are limited to cook food indoors,” she said. “A fireplace can be used with wood or gas to grill food, or you can wrap food in foil in the fireplace.”&nbsp;

However, if using a fireplace, she cautions: “Do not use charcoal in the fireplace because it can emit carbon monoxide. Be sure the fireplace flue is open during use. Otherwise, use foods you don’t have to cook or keep cold. Only prepare enough food for one meal so that you don’t have leftovers.”&nbsp;

Meat products must be cooked to the proper internal temperature to assure safety. The food safety recommendations include:&nbsp;

Blakeslee urges consumers to consider stocking up on non-perishable foods and disposable utensils for an emergency. Some examples of foods to include are peanut butter, canned meats, whole grain chips or crackers, canned fruit, canned fruit and dried fruit. “And don’t forget pet food for your family’s pets,” she said.&nbsp;

“For canned foods, the pop top cans are easy to open,” Blakeslee said. “Otherwise, be sure to have a (non-electric) can opener available. These foods can be portable in case you need to relocate during an emergency. Single serve items – such as fruit cups and pudding – are easy foods to store for an emergency.”&nbsp;

Once canned goods are opened, they must be used, especially canned meats, fruits and vegetables. “Without refrigeration, the leftovers can not be stored for later use,” Blakeslee said.&nbsp;

She also reminded consumers of one of the most basic food safety steps: Wash your hands.&nbsp;

“If running water is not available, disposable wipes or hand sanitizers can be used. Pack some extra bottles of water and soap in your emergency kit.”&nbsp;

The 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley are hosting their next photo of the month contest. The contest opens on April 4 and closes on April 30 at 5 p.m.

On the first Friday of each month, the winning photo of the prior month is featured on&nbsp;the 1st Infantry Division Instagram at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/1stinfantrydivision/" target="_blank">https://www.instagram.com/1stinfantrydivision/</a>.&nbsp; Additionally, for the remainder of the month, a copy of the winning photo is displayed in the entryway at Victory Hall, the 1st Infantry Division headquarters building. The winning photo will also be displayed as the 1ID Facebook cover photo.

This month’s photo theme is “Earth Action.”&nbsp; Individuals in surrounding communities are encouraged to submit a photo that shows themselves or their family enjoying the outdoors. Some examples include, but are not limited to; walking your dog, playing basketball, outdoor spring cleaning, hiking, camping, having a meal outside, etc.

To participate, follow the 1st Infantry Division on Instagram, “like” the competition announcement (posted at the start of the contest), and submit your photo via direct message to the 1st Infantry Division’s Instagram. Parents or guardians are encouraged to submit photos on their child’s behalf.

April photo contest theme is “Earth Action”

RILEY COUNTY—Authorities in Riley County urged drivers near Keats, an unincorporated community&nbsp; Wildcat Township northwest of Manhattan to watch out for the herd of elk, according to a social media report from the Riley County Police Department.

The RCPD responded to a truck that struck two elk. The driver was not injured but the elk did not survive and the truck sustained some heavy damage.

RCPD alerts drivers to herd of elk in the region

Effective Monday all public entrances will re-open at Geary Community Hospital. Masks will still be required to be worn, in accordance with CMS guidelines.

Hospital officials have announced a series of measures that will begin on Monday.

In-patients will be allowed one visitor (selected by the patient) during established visiting hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week.

Labor and delivery patients in the Women’s Health Center will be allowed two visitors throughout their stay.

Patients undergoing outpatient procedures (including same-day surgeries), testing, and/or medical appointments will be allowed one visitor during their care.

Pediatric patients (under the age of 18) are allowed two visitors during their care.

Patients seeking care in the Emergency Department will be allowed one visitor to accompany them after the triage process is completed. If a patient is tested for COVID-19, a positive test result will require the patient’s visitor to return to the car.

At this time, no visitors will be allowed for patients receiving care for confirmed or suspected COVID-19, except for end-of-life situations or for patients who are unable to advocate for themselves.

🔹All visitors must be 18 years of age or older.

There is a portion of the Riverwalk Trail on the north side of Junction City just north of the Republican River that has eroded away from the water. Craig Bender. Military Affairs Council Director for the Chamber of Commerce, said this week said right now it's a safety hazard and if you are riding your bicycle or walking you could fall off into the river. "We're partnering with the Kansas National Guard. They're going to do their annual training, will be fixing that trail for us."

Necessary permitting work for the project has been completed and there will be a gift of materials for the work. "What we're going to do is move the trail back about 20 feet, and if we need to put a culvert in we will to make sure that it's safe and a nice, solid trail for people to use."

Dick's Sporting Goods reported three unknown female suspects stole multiple clothing items. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,020. 

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

RCPD: 3 women stole $1000 in clothing from sporting goods store

--There will be a new department-store on East Chestnut Street in Junction City at the location of the former Gordmans outlet. Information provided during the Chamber of Commerce Board meeting this week revealed a June 1st target date for the opening of Burkes.

--Due diligence continues on a proposed slaughterhouse project. That project is not a given, and the company involved is still in their due diligence phase.

--No final decision has been received concerning the possibility of a Veterans Home in Geary County. The Chamber has been involved in an effort to recruit that facility.

--As part of the JMCI project designed to match Soldiers leaving the Army with high paying jobs it was noted that the local assets have been introduced to more than 100 companies with 500-plus employees.

--There is no expectation for a third brigade of troops to be stationed at Fort Riley in the near future. There is a need for funding for barracks. Right now there is not any place to put them and there is not any growth planned in force structure.

--There is an effort to attract smaller troop units in the 100 to approximate 500 Soldier range. MAC Director Craig Bender confirmed two or three of those are in the works, and local officials feel there may be an opportunity there. Since more barracks are needed there is an effort to work with Congressional leaders to get funding to build some more barracks.

RCPD investigating another gun theft in Manhattan

Numbers have been compiled for economic development accomplishments in Geary County over the past five years. According to EDC Director Mickey Fornaro-Dean the top six projects created $64 million in investment. During that time the City and County combined to provide $1,414, 104 in funding support. When that amount is subtracted from the $64 million total that leaves $62,585, 896. She provided her report to the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors on Thursday.

Fornaro-Dean noted that gives their City and County partners a $44.26 return on investment for dollars contributed. "The return on investment numbers are pretty exciting to see." Fornaro added that&nbsp; the community is doing much better as a community working together. She cited the effort to attract a Veterans Home, inclusion in the IKE program involving the planned Taylor Road interchange and expansion of existing businesses. "I think we've seen some pretty good successes."

Work with ( Camso ) Michelin and Superior Products were two of the successful six projects mentioned by Fornaro-Dean. The six projects combined represent 245 new jobs at an average wage of $20 per hour. That equates to an average of 49 new jobs per year with a potential new payroll of $50 million per year over five years. This represents reused or new industrial or commercial space of 387,500 sq. ft. or an average of 77,500 sq. ft. per year. Fornaro-Dean called it a solid beginning to economic growth in Junction City and Geary County.

KDOT has announced that part of K-177 highway was scheduled to close this week for the first phase of reconstruction. K-177 will be closed approximately 7.7 miles from Ave. L north of the Council Grove reservoir, continuing north to halfway between the K-4 junctions.&nbsp;

Through traffic can follow the state detour from Council Grove to Herington to Junction City.&nbsp;

K-177 is scheduled to reopen in the fall of 2022. The final phase of reconstruction for K-177, from halfway between&nbsp; the K-4 junctions to I-70, is scheduled to begi9n in March 2023 and reopen in the fall of 2023.&nbsp;

Wildcat Construction Co. Inc. and Subsidiaries of Wichita is the primary contractor for this $52.3 million project.

Kansas Cold Weather Rule ends on Thursday. That means Kansans behind on electric and natural gas utility bills will be subject to disconnection of service unless they contact their utility company to make payment arrangements.

The Cold Weather Rule is in effect from Nov. 1 through March 31 each year. It provides protection from disconnection to residential customers served by utilities regulated by the Kansas Corporation Commission.&nbsp;

The Cold Weather Rule 12-month payment plan requires an initial payment plan of 1/12th of the overdue amount, 1/12th of the bill for current service, the full amount of any disconnection or reconnection fees, plus any applicable deposit owed to the utility.
