MANHATTAN —When one-quarter of all U.S. college students have seriously considered suicide and the global pandemic approaches its third year, Kansas State University alumni, faculty, students, staff and friends gave $600,389 to increase access to mental health services for K-State students and reduce the stigma of asking for help, according to a state from the university Foundation.

That’s the power of K-Staters working together to achieve one bold objective in one day; <a href="https://stories.ksufoundation.org/from-ksu-foundation-donors-gave-600389-to-increase-access-to-mental-health-services-for-k-state-students-through-all-in-for-k-state/">that’s All In for K-State.</a>

“Wow. More than $600,000 was raised by you, Wildcats from all 50 states and 77 Kansas counties,” said First Lady of K-State Sally Linton. “Thank you for jumping ‘All In.’ Thank you for caring about the future of mental health at K-State. Your heartfelt support will have a significant impact on many life journeys. Go Cats!”

Even K-Staters and friends from as far away as Canada and the United Kingdom came together virtually to support K-State’s Counseling and Psychological Services and the Morrison Family Center for Student Well-being and the students they serve.

“We often talk of how K-State students, alumni and friends feel like ‘family.’ We are grateful that ‘K-State family’ showed up again to support students, their access to mental health resources and All In for K-State,” said Eric Holderness, associate vice president of development at the KSU Foundation. “Thank you to the many people who gave to help students access counseling resources and develop tools toward their lifelong wellbeing.”

Geary County Emergency Management has announced that outdoor burning will not be allowed in the county Monday or Tuesday due to the current weather conditions and upcoming weather forecast.

The rangeland fire danger index will be in the high category this afternoon. High fire danger means fires will be difficult to control.

Cold front could possibly bring severe storms

Greg Doering, Kansas Farm Bureau Kansas legislators will soon be on spring break, and as they head back to their districts to tout the work they’ve already completed this session. At public forums and town halls across the state, lawmakers are also likely to talk about an unexpected problem: too much money. Certainly, this is much better than crafting a budget with a shortfall where none of the options are appealing. However, dealing with a surplus is kind of like a child in a candy store. While there’s not enough money to buy everything, there’s still enough to fill up on empty calories. Right now, legislators are in that candy store with their eyes darting around a menu of paying off debt, cutting taxes, issuing rebates, shoring up rainy day funds or spending the excess on services. Individually, each one of these has merit. As they return home during the break in the legislative session, it’s a prime opportunity for citizens to speak out about how those budget decisions can make a difference in their communities. Getting it right means not gorging on the excess now, so we don’t have to deal with the stomachache later. Those of us in rural areas need to make a strong case for using some of this money to make real investments in our communities that will have an impact long after the good times have ended. It’s a chance to advocate at home for the future of our communities. In fact, one of the best uses for a portion of the money is in homes, especially in rural areas across the state. A lack of quality housing is repeatedly cited by businesses, workers and community leaders as a substantial barrier to rural economic growth. The influx of federal dollars and Kansas’ robust budget present a rare opportunity to make a lasting investment in rural Kansas with a one-time appropriation to the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC). We’re not asking for a handout, rather we want to prime the pump for private investors to build, rehabilitate and finance housing in the 96 Kansas counties with a population of less than 60,000. As a Kansas entity KHRC is not bound by mountains of federal regulatory requirements that rural areas may not meet. As history has shown, spending on KHRC programs offers up to a six to one return for every dollar invested. This multiplier effect means any investment by the legislature likely results in significant spending on rural housing. That’s real money to address a lack of homes for people with moderate incomes, like teachers, police officers and young professionals who struggle to find suitable accommodations in rural Kansas. KHRC has a proven history and ability to be flexible to meet the needs of rural communities. This money would provide real, tangible returns not only by providing homes for current and future residents, but it would also incentivize businesses to expand to meet the needs of growing communities. There’s a real opportunity to use this funding in the short term to create a cycle of growth in areas of need. Now is the time for some hometown advocacy. All of us have concrete examples of what the housing needs in our communities are. Share them with your legislators when you see them over the next few weeks in church, the grocery store or at a townhall. Let them know how important the issue is to you and ask if you can count on their support to make prudent, long-term investments in rural Kansas.

Road construction is planned near a Fort Riley gate entrance

Junction City will spend three times more on street maintenance this year than just eight years ago. According to information provided by City Manager Allen Dinkel, the City&nbsp; has signed a contract for more than $1.7 million for 2022 street maintenance. That total does not include a pair of projects where KDOT funds are being received. Add in those and the total for projects gets into the $2.5 million range. Beyond that, Dinkel noted that another $2 million that will also be spent on other transportation projects this year.

The city manager also confirmed that roundabout at I-70 and Washington Street is in the future plans for 2023 with a large chunk of KDOT funds paying the costs.

Checking upcoming projects, one involves the Blue Jay Way Trail connector where there will be a bid letting date in July. Final plans have been submitted to KDOT for final comments and work is under way to get five easements for the project. The City Commission has approved a City / State agreement with KDOT for funding the project in an amount totaling $737,600, with the City's share being 20 percent of&nbsp; the project.

Another project has a bid opening date of April 22nd. The City has signed the KDOT - City / State agreement with KDOT funding of $300,000. This is called a CCLIP project. The work will consist of a two-inch mill and overlay on East 6th Street from Franklin to Reynolds Street.

Junction City / Geary County United Way and First Baptist Church&nbsp; of Junction City are teaming up to host a Volunteer Fair on May 14th. Nichole Mader, United Way Executive Director, said it will run from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Fifth Street Park. "Families and individuals are welcome to come out and learn about organizations in the community and how to sign up to get volunteer services.&nbsp;

A similar event was held last spring. Mader said that they want to try and do two of these events twice each year, including once in May just before summer and another one in September.&nbsp;

Mader said the goal is to get the&nbsp; community out and get people to volunteer. "Helping them learn about the agencies and programs. We get phone calls on a pretty regular basis of people needing volunteer opportunities and so this is just a great way to connect the dots." United Way supports multiple organizations and agencies in the community.

Multiple agencies conducted a joint training exercise in the 300 block of Grant Ave. on Friday. It involved the simulation of an active shooter at Konza Prairie Community Health Center. Junction City Police Chief John Lamb said anytime they can train they will take advantage of it. "Best we could in a simulated, safe environment, not only for the participants such as Konza Health but also for the officers we tried to engage their senses, their situation awareness and their response, and start thinking how would I do this and verbalize it on the radio to the other participants in the event."

Lamb said authorities did the best they could to make the exercise as realistic as possible. " I think we did the best we could, some things we can definitely improve on and some things that definitely worked out really, really well."

Lamb plans to continue these training exercises in the future with other entities, and noted that they are looking for those opportunities moving forward.

Drill provided opportunity for multiple agency training

Junction City Police Chief John Lamb is confirming that there was a "large melee" in the Freshman Success Academy cafeteria area at Junction City High School on Thursday. Police estimate that it involved approximately 13 or 14 students. He stated that working with school officials they have identified all of the students and have taken&nbsp; the necessary reports.

Lamb said there will be a security meeting on Monday to talk to District officials about the security steps police will take with prosecution and moving forward with "taking the necessary course of an action."

In order to stop the violence Lamb noted that he felt the tone had to be set at the beginning of the year. "Moving forward I really want to set a strong tone next year when we go in with our school resource officers, letting them know that this type of behavior is not tolerated. It is criminal. " Lamb added working with school officials, police will take necessary actions "to hold people accountable for this type of behavior." Lamb added law enforcement and the school need to set a strong tone at the beginning of the school year.

No arrests have been made. Lamb said he had been informed that school officials wanted to charge the students with Disorderly Conduct instead of Battery because it was just a large fight. " But I want to revisit that and look at what else we can possibly do. "&nbsp;

USD 475 Superintendent Dr. Reginald Eggleston confirmed for JC Post that there was a fight between some students on Thursday in the&nbsp; freshman cafeteria at the high school and District officials are in the process of investigating and identifying everyone who was involved. "At this present moment disciplinary action will be determined. We will meet Monday in order to finalize any actions that need to be made."

Eggleston confirmed that right now officials are uncertain what caused the fight. "Don't know all of the details of that at this present moment, don't know if there was any disagreements or if something happened outside of school. At present we'll still need some time to kind of unravel all the pieces to it."

The Superintendent confirmed that safety is always the number one priority for the school district and that they do everything to try and respond appropriately to information&nbsp; that they have received, or&nbsp; anything on which they need to take action "We're going to do everything in our power to make sure we create a culture and climate in the building that is conducive to learning so that everyone involved can be productive in the environment."&nbsp;

USD 475 has issued a text statement that District leadership was aware of fights that took place at JCHS this week. They noted that they take these incidents seriously and are working with local law&nbsp; enforcement in addressing this situation, and will take the necessary&nbsp; steps to reduce incidents in the future.&nbsp; The message read that it's important for&nbsp; the public to know that the safety and well-being of the District's students and staff is our top priority. We want all kids to learn in a safe environment and feel safe coming to school.

Fort Riley issued a social media reminder that from through next Wednesday, March 30, maintenance crews will repair and test tornado sirens and the giant voice system across Fort Riley. The tests are one minute in duration. The crews will work during the day, from approximately 8 a.m. -  5 p.m.

Junction City Police Department's team showed up in style rocking black and blue tutus, and there was a thank you to the Geary county Sheriffs Office Junction City Fire Department/EMS joint dive team that was on scene for the event to keep all participants safe.

Annual clean up will be held in April

TOPEKA – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.5% in February. This was a decrease from 2.6% in January and a decrease from 3.6% in February 2021.

“The Kansas job market showed continued strength in February with an unemployment rate of 2.5%,” said Secretary Amber Shultz. “Estimates indicate that in addition to an increase in the number of jobs, Kansas also saw an increase in the average workweek for jobs in the private sector compared to February 2021.”

Jobless rates in northeast Kansas counties remained relatively flat from January — and extremely low.&nbsp;Most area counties had unemployment rates of less than 3 percent. The jobless rate in Riley fell from 2. 6 percent in January to 2.3 percent in February. The rate is also down in Wabaunsee and and Pottawatomie Counties. Geary County saw a slight increase from 3.4 to 3.5 percent in February.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 6,900 from January. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 8,100 over the month, while government decreased by 1,200.

“Kansas estimates indicate that strong job growth continued in February as private sector employers added 8,100 jobs over the month,” said Labor Economist Emilie Doerksen. “With this continued growth, the construction, information, and trade, transportation, and utilities industries are all above pre-pandemic levels.”

Since February 2021 Kansas seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 34,300. This change is due to an increase of 33,200 private sector jobs and an increase of 1,100 government jobs.

These letters came from the marquee of&nbsp; the Colonial Theater, now the C.L. Hoover Opera House. For many people this is the look and memory they have of the building.&nbsp; That all went away, when the Opera house was restored to its 1898 look in&nbsp; the renovation of 2008.

Now there is another building at 131 West 7th Street being added to the Opera House complex to create more rehearsal and meeting rooms to accommodate their growing youth education programs, in addition to other improvements.

One of the new rehearsal rooms has been designated as the Colonial Room. The plan was to refurbish the old Colonial Theatre marquee letters, relit and hung in that new room. 

In the original marquee there were two sets of Colonial letters. The red letters were outlined in white neon tubing. The Opera House owned one full set of the letters, minus the glass neon tubing.

During the COVID lockdown the basement was cleaned and organized which is where the Colonial letters were stored, but there was a surprise....the "C" was missing. Email messages and Facebook messages were sent out explaining the mystery.

Extension agent Chuck Otte answered after his wife, Jaye, alerted him to the search. Chuck had a "C" and "O" that still had the neon intact and were from the second set of letters.

Otte had purchased the two letters at a fundraising auction for the Opera House renovation approximately 30 years ago. He donated both letters back to the Opera House.&nbsp;

Latter, Heather Hagedorn, Geary County Historical Society Director, informed Opera House officials that the Museum had the missing C. Two years ago the Museum requested the loan of that "C" for their Alphabetical History Exhibit.&nbsp;

In memory of the Colonial Theater one rehearsal / even space in the second story of the new building will be named the Colonial Room. Officials hope to display the refurbished letters on the wall in that room as an architectural tribute to the history of the Opera House.

United Way of Junction City and Geary County will make a shift from a Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon to an evening Dinner this year on May 5th. Director Nichole Mader said sometimes in the past having the event over the lunch hour felt rushed. "We want to be able to celebrate not just our volunteers but our partner agency volunteers, as well as support of our community and our support of our donors."

The Appreciation Dinner will be held at the Milford Lake Conference Center at Acorns Resort. Food will be provided by The Cove restaurant. Tickets will be $10 per person or $50 for a host table that will include six tickets. Sponsorships are $300, and that would include a table.

You can design a poster about what victory means to you during the Geary County Historical Society sponsored Victory Poster contest April 1st through the 15th. Patsy Johnson, Programs and Education Director for the Society, said this is something important that is being offered for youth and adults. "Right now we think it's really important to recognize what Victory means to us."

You can go to the Historical Society's web site where there is information about World War II Victory Posters and Victory Gardens. Registration forms and contest rules are also available there. Posters will be displayed at the Museum ( 530 ) North Adam throughout May.

Historical society will sponsor a Victory Poster contest

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded the stream advisory for the Kansas River near Ogden, Kansas that was issued Mar. 22nd. Water samples show no health risk associated with the river. Water contact in the river is now deemed safe.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) on Tuesday issued a stream advisory for the Kansas River near Ogden.

The Department reported that the stream advisory is a result of operation problems at the Fort Riley Wastewater Treatment Plant, which resulted in a wastewater discharge containing elevated bacteria levels. The Fort Riley Wastewater Treatment Plant has repaired the problem.

The advisory has been issued because potential elevated bacteria and contaminants may be present in the Kansas River near Ogden, Kansas. If you live or have activities near this stream, do not enter the stream or allow children or pets to enter the stream.

KDHE will rescind the advisory once flows recede, and subsequent bacteria testing indicates secondary (wading) contact has been deemed safe.

Officials with the North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging (NC-FH AAA) announced today that Tenant-Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) grant funds provided by the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation are still available to income eligible tenants who rent their homes.

The Agency received a $100,000 grant award to help low-income Kansans over age 18 who live in north-central Kansas with security and utility deposits. Kansans in these counties are eligible to apply: Chase, Clay, Cloud, Dickinson, Ellsworth, Geary, Jewell, Lincoln, Marion, Mitchell, Morris, Ottawa, Pottawatomie, Republic, Riley, Saline, Wabaunsee.

Flint Hills Housing Assistance, a program of the Agency, is now accepting applications for the TBRA funds. Applications are available at ncfhaaa.com website or by calling 1-800-432-2703. Applications will be considered on a first-come-first serve basis.

“We want to get these funds for utility and security deposits to qualifying Kansans,” said Julie Govert Walter, NC-FH AAA Executive Director. “We encourage people in households in our region to apply now--we process fully-completed applications in the order in which they are received.”

Individuals with adjusted incomes below $27,100 and two-person households with total adjusted income below $31,000 qualify for TBRA. Income limit information for households with more than two people are available on-line at www.ncfhaaa.com or by calling the Agency at 1-800-432-2703.

“These limits differ slightly among counties, so we recommend that applicants check on the income limits for their county,” said Vivianne Carney, Flint Hills Housing Assistance Coordinator.

Help with Utility, Rent Deposits Now Available for Eligible Renters

Multiple law enforcement and emergency vehicles converged on the Konza Prairie Community Health Center parking lot Friday morning as part of a active shooter training exercise involving a simulated shooting with four fatalities and approximately 12 to 15 injuries.&nbsp;

Geary County Sheriff's Department Public Information Officer Dave Gilbert said the simulated exercise was designed&nbsp; to involve a person in&nbsp; the clinic who was unsatisfied with services that he received, "started firing rounds inside at which time people started filing out of the building, people called 911 to start having people respond out here."

Law enforcement officers arrived on scene to secure the scene and went into the building to look for the active shooter. As part of the drill they also worked to ensure the safety of those people filing out of the building.

An armored vehicle was brought in carrying SWAT team members who the entered&nbsp; the health center, Lifestar helicopter landed nearby as they would in a situation where wounded people would have to be transported to a hospital, and Fire Department authorities along with multiple police agencies worked at the scene.

Again.....this was a training exercise.

If you notice emergency and law enforcement vehicles on Grant Avenue in the Konza Prairie Community Health Center this ( Friday ) morning it is just a training exercise. Garry Berges, Geary County Emergency Manager, said there is a simulated shooting at that facility in the 300 block of Grant Avenue. "We've got law enforcement, Geary County Sheriff's Office, Junction City Police Department, have responded, and we'll have fire and EMS there. "

The training exercise will&nbsp; test the response of several agencies to a shooting incident and also helps the Konza employees realize what is occurring. "They've got some plans that they have in place and they wanted to test it so we all worked together to plan this event."

Berges said the drill has been planned since October of last year. "It's just part of our training cycle. This is the location that was decided on for this time. "

Again....this is a training exercise. Only&nbsp; the parking lot at the health center will be temporarily closed, but Berges estimated that area would open back up by noon.&nbsp;

Where was it raised? On the Good Farm, half a continent away in Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Craig and Amy Good are the owners of Good Farm, the source of this specialty pork.&nbsp;&nbsp;Craig, the son of Don and Jane Good, grew up in Manhattan. He graduated from Manhattan High and earned a degree from Kansas State in animal science. Craig met and married Amy who earned her degree in what is now called health and human sciences.&nbsp;

After graduation, Craig worked for Fred Germann, who was an innovator in producing Specific Pathogen Free hogs. After five years, with Fred’s blessing, Craig and Amy moved to a farm near Olsburg and started producing breeding stock of their own.&nbsp;

“My passion is to make the next generation of production better than the last,” Craig said. He worked hard on improving the family’s swine herd and selling quality breeding stock to other pork producers.&nbsp;

Then the hog market crashed in1998. The market dried up for Craig’s boars and gilts.&nbsp;

“We went through a brief time of blaming others,” Craig said. “We could blame the packers or blame the corporations, but the blame game serves no purpose.”&nbsp;

Craig and Amy came up with possible alternative crops for their farm and approached K-State agricultural economist Vincent Amanor-Boadu. He looked at the alternatives but ultimately said to them: “Do what you’re good at, and that is raising hogs.”&nbsp;

Amanour-Boadu connected Craig and Amy with a start-up company in Brooklyn, New York that was interested in utilizing heritage livestock breed products from independent farmers for the upscale restaurant industry.&nbsp;

That company is now known as Heritage Foods USA. The founders of Heritage Foods made a trip to Kansas to visit Craig and Amy’s farm near Olsburg, starting a relationship that is in its 19th year.&nbsp;

Heritage Foods USA sources heritage breed products for a number of upscale urban restaurants, especially on the east and west coasts. This was a totally different market than what the Goods had reached in the past.&nbsp;

“We donated a pig to a benefit event that was being held in the Hamptons for some worthy cause being promoted by Mikhail Baryshnikov,” Craig said. Heritage Foods USA continued to build a network of restaurants. “That was the start of the farm-to-table movement on the coasts. Now they buy everything we can produce.”&nbsp;

The Goods raise Duroc hogs as well as Old World breeds such as Gloucestershire Spot and Tamworth. “(The Heritage Foods USA people) have a saying,” Craig said. “They say, `To save a breed of livestock, you have to eat it.’&nbsp;&nbsp;That may sound crazy, but what it means is, if you can create consumer demand for products from that breed, then more farmers will grow them.”&nbsp;

Heritage Foods USA brought groups of chefs to Good Farm in Kansas to see Craig and Amy’s livestock production practices, and family farm firsthand.&nbsp;“Every piece of pork is traced back to the farm,” Craig said.&nbsp;

One day, Craig got a call from the folks at Grandma Hoerner’s, a nearby company that processes fruit and other products. An ice storm had knocked out their refrigeration temporarily. Seven pallets of frozen plums had thawed out to the point that they couldn’t use them, so they called Craig to see if he wanted to feed them to his hogs.&nbsp;

“I called New York and said, `How do you feel about plum-fed pork?’ They loved it,” Craig said. Then there was a neighbor with a Jersey cow who gave excess milk, so the Goods fed the hogs milk with good consumer results as well.&nbsp;

“We want to raise the best product out there,” Craig said. It’s a lofty goal for a family farm near a rural community such as Olsburg, population 219 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

We commend Craig and Amy Good for making a difference with niche marketing and building relationships with urban consumers. I’m glad this has produced such Good results.&nbsp;

On the Good Farm, half a continent away in Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Craig and Amy Good are the owners of Good Farm, the source of this specialty pork.&nbsp;&nbsp;Craig, the son of Don and Jane Good, grew up in Manhattan. He graduated from Manhattan High and earned a degree from Kansas State in animal science. Craig met and married Amy who earned her degree in what is now called health and human sciences.&nbsp;After graduation, Craig worked for Fred Germann, who was an innovator in producing Specific Pathogen Free hogs. After five years, with Fred’s blessing, Craig and Amy moved to a farm near Olsburg and started producing breeding stock of their own.&nbsp;“My passion is to make the next generation of production better than the last,” Craig said. He worked hard on improving the family’s swine herd and selling quality breeding stock to other pork producers.&nbsp;Then the hog market crashed in1998. Art from students in kindergarten through high school will be on display. There will be a collection of drawings, paintings, watercolors and acrylic art.&nbsp;

There will also be a silent auction for select pieces at the Opera House.&nbsp;
