MANHATTAN, Kan. – It may sound too simple, but there’s a big reason why everyone should take an interest in American agriculture: food.&nbsp;

The fact is that if you eat, then agriculture has an impact on your everyday life.&nbsp;

Annika Wiebers, a freshman at Kansas State University, plans to spread that message wide and far. Wiebers recently was selected by the National 4-H Council as Kansas’ sole student representative – and one of just 10 across the United States – to become an advocate for agriculture, in recognition of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.agday.org/" target="_blank">National Ag Day</a>&nbsp;March 22.&nbsp;

“It was an honor to even be nominated for this opportunity because there were only two nominees per state,” Wiebers said. “Then, to be one of 10 selected in the nation is really amazing.”&nbsp;

National Ag Day is an effort to remind Americans – especially children – how their food is grown, and what farmers do to make that food safe and wholesome.&nbsp;

“As we become increasingly consumer-driven and have fewer and fewer people on the farm, the opportunity to educate consumers on where their food comes from becomes increasingly necessary,” said Kelsey Nordyke, a Kansas 4-H ag sciences specialist.&nbsp;

In addition to training, Wiebers will be talking to farmers and meeting with Kansas’ Senate delegation in Washington D.C.&nbsp;

Wiebers, who studies agricultural communications at K-State, said one of her career goals is to “promote agricultural literacy in populations that are further removed from commercial farming.”&nbsp;

National Ag Day is sponsored annually by the Agriculture Council of America (located in Overland Park, Kan.) to celebrate the abundance provided by America’s farmers. The Council promotes the thought that all K-12 students should receive regular education about agriculture.&nbsp;

Other speakers and topics will include the State of Teaching and Learning by Associate Superintendent of Schools Dr. Debra Gustafson, State of Operations by Chief Operations Officer David Wild, State of Technology by Chief Information Officer Karl DeArmond, State of Finance from Chief Financial Officer Marilee Fredricks and State of Personnel Services by the Executive Director of Personnel Services, Timothy Winter.

The session will also include recognition of Kansas Teacher of the Year Award, Kansas Master Teacher Award, Horizon Award and Shining Star Award recipients for the district. There will be multiple performances by student musical groups.&nbsp;

Geary County schools State of Education report is set for Tuesday evening

Tami Robison, the first ever Finance Officer for Geary County, began work&nbsp; on Monday..

Robison previously worked as the Budget and Finance Officer for Riley County. She saw this new position as an opportunity to grow. "I previously was underneath the county clerk. This gave me the autonomy to report directly to the commissioners."

Robison cited multiple challenges that she could begin working on. "The county owned hospital, Public Building Commission, also they have a partially self-funded health insurance."

A key goal is to help save money for the county, something Robison plans to try and do. "I have a lot of ideas and I have already preliminarily started some analytical before I arrived. So I need to talk to some department heads and talk about their processes. Based on those processes then I'll evaluate what the efficiencies are that I can help out with."

There was opposition from some in the the county government ranks to creation of this job position. Robison believes she can work through that issue. "I want to build trust and collaboration. I'm not here to direct, I want to be a team leader but also a partner with the other department heads."

Previously Robison served as Treasurer, and currently serves as Secretary for the Kansas Government Financial Officers Association.

Applications are being accepted for the Junction City Police Department Community Involvement Unit's Law Enforcement Summer Camp June 6th through the 10th. Applications are located at the Junction City and Fort Riley Middle Schools, JCPD or you can download a copy of it on the City's website.

There will be space in the program for 25 kids. The application deadline is May 6th. Forms can be given to the school resource officers at the Junction City Middle and High Schools, HD Karns building or they can be mailed, emailed or hand delivered to the JCPD at 210 East 9th Street.&nbsp;

The summer camp is designed for middle school children. It is an outreach program developed to help students become more aware of a First Responders' functions. The purpose is to build life skills, instill confidence and develop self-esteem. The curriculum will include a wide variety of activities that will incorporate teamwork, physical fitness and general First Responders' information. Good decision -making skills and good citizenship will be emphasized and taught.

School Resource Officers will conduct the camp, which allows them to maintain a good relationship over the summer with their students. The students will observe presentations by a K-9 officer, SWAT Team members, patrol officers, school resource officers and other emergency services.&nbsp;

Students will be given the opportunity to understand what it's like for someone to be under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances, through the use of simulator devices. They will learn how drug dogs can search and identify illegal substances, techniques and equipment used by SWAT Team members , and they will have an opportunity to observe a police chase where stop sticks will be deployed and ending in a high-risk traffic stop. The students will experience a day at the Milford Lake Fish Hatchery and at the Junction City Municipal Swimming Pool.

Activities mixed into the week will include swimming, bowling and the hatchery.

Camp hours June 6th through the 10th will be 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Lunch, snacks and water bottles will be provided.

Sgt. Major of the Army, Michael A. Grinston will meet with families of deployed Soldiers currently deployed in Europe during a Town Hall on Fort Riley from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday.&nbsp; It will be held at the Victory Chapel.&nbsp;

Grinston and key leaders from the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley will address questions and concerns family members may have about the recent deployments.

<a>MANHATTAN, Kan.</a>&nbsp;–&nbsp;Jerome Tang, one of the architects in helping build Baylor into a national powerhouse in his 19 seasons as an assistant and associate head coach, has been selected as the 25th&nbsp;head men’s basketball coach at Kansas State, Director of Athletics&nbsp;Gene Taylor&nbsp;announced Monday afternoon (March 21).

Tang will be formally introduced to the public during a news conference on Thursday in the Shamrock Zone on the north concourse of Bramlage Coliseum. The news conference will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ as well as K-State social channels. It will also be carried on the K-State Sports Network.

Further details on the news conference will be announced as soon as they are finalized.

Tang agreed to a 6-year contract, which was approved by the K-State Athletics, Inc., Board of Directors and President&nbsp;Richard Linton. Tang will be paid $2.1 million in 2022-23 and will receive a $100,000 base salary increase each year remaining on the contract ($2.2 million in 2023-24, $2.3 million in 2024-25, $2.4 million in 2025-26, $2.5 million in 2026-27 and $2.6 million in 2027-28).

Tang, 55, was an original member of head coach&nbsp;Scott Drew’s&nbsp;coaching staff and played an instrumental role in building the Bears program from one rocked by scandal and NCAA probation into one that has developed into one of the nation’s top programs highlighted by the 2021 NCAA Championship and consecutive Big 12 regular-season titles in 2021 and 2022. He served his first 14 seasons (2003-17) on staff as an assistant coach before being promoted to associate head coach in 2017.

﻿“I am extremely excited to welcome Jerome, Careylyen, Seven and Aylyn to Manhattan and K-State,” Taylor said. “As we conducted a national search to find our next head coach, we wanted to identify an individual who can lead our program to consistently high levels while maintaining the integrity that our program is known for. When we first met with Jerome, he was very impressive, and that continued throughout the duration of our search.”

During his time at Baylor, Tang has helped the Bears post a 397-222 (.641) overall record, including a 168-155 (.520) mark in Big 12 play, to go with 13 postseason appearances (10 NCAA Tournaments, 3 NITs), one NCAA title (2021), one NIT title (2013) and one NIT runner-up finish (2009). In the process, he has helped coach 11 All-Americans, including consensus selections&nbsp;Johnathan Motley&nbsp;(2017) and&nbsp;Jared Butler&nbsp;(2021), a National Defensive Player of the Year in&nbsp;Davion Mitchell&nbsp;(2021) and 58 All-Big 12 honorees, including nine on the First Team.

In addition to prowess on the bench, Tang has helped construct nine consensus Top 25 recruiting classes while at Baylor, including 2010 (Jones III), 2011 (Miller and&nbsp;Deuce Bello), 2012 (Isaiah Austin, Prince and&nbsp;Rico Gathers), 2013 (Ishmail Wainright,&nbsp;Al Freeman&nbsp;and Motley) and the highest-ranked class in program history at No. 4 in 2021 (Kendall Brown,&nbsp;Langston Love&nbsp;and&nbsp;Jeremy Sochan).

“From a detailed recruiting plan and familiarity with our league, his knack for building and maintaining tremendous relationships with everyone he comes in contact with, to offensive and defensive philosophies, he has what it takes to be a successful leader,” said Taylor. “His vision for our program is something that all K-Staters will be excited about and one that helped build a Baylor program from the ground up, culminating with a national championship. With him at the helm, I know that great days are ahead for K-State basketball.”

Tang will be the first Black men’s head basketball coach in school history and just the fourth minority men’s head coach in school history, following former baseball coach&nbsp;Dave Baker&nbsp;(1978-83), former football coach&nbsp;Ron Prince&nbsp;(2006-08) and current women’s tennis coach&nbsp;Jordan Smith&nbsp;(2018-present).

<a>“We want to personally welcome Jerome, his wife and two children to the K-State family,” University president&nbsp;Richard Linton&nbsp;said. “I have high confidence that his leadership will produce a very competitive men’s basketball program. He deeply values community, family and a strong work ethic, values that are all directly in line with the K-State way.”</a>

The head coaching role will not be new for Tang, who built a powerhouse at Heritage Christian Academy in Cleveland, Texas over a 10-year period (1993-2003) before starting his tenure at Baylor in 2003. He also stepped in on four occasions as the Bears’ interim head coach, winning the first two games of the 2012-13 Big 12 schedule at home against Texas, 86-79 in overtime, and on the road at Texas Tech, 82-48, and the first two games of the 2020-21 national title season in Las Vegas against Louisiana-Lafayette (112-82) and Washington (86-52).

Since the 2007-08 season, Tang has been pivotal in helping Baylor to a stretch of 15 consecutive seasons of at least 18 wins, including a school-record 30 in 2011-12, en route to a 361-153 (.702) record and 10 NCAA Tournament appearances. Since 2010, the Bears have appeared in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 five times (2010, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2021), three times advancing to the Elite Eight (2010, 2012, 2021) and once to the Final Four (2021).

Additionally, 13 players from those seasons have gone on to play in the NBA, including&nbsp;Quincy Acy,&nbsp;Jared Butler,&nbsp;Freddie Gillespie,&nbsp;Pierre Jackson,&nbsp;Cory Jefferson,&nbsp;Perry Jones III,&nbsp;Quincy Miller,&nbsp;Davion Mitchell,&nbsp;Johnathan Motley,&nbsp;Royce O’Neale,&nbsp;Taurean Prince,&nbsp;MaCio Teague&nbsp;and&nbsp;Ekpe Udoh.

In the last three seasons alone, Baylor has tallied an 81-13 (.862) record, including a 43-8 (.843) mark in Big 12 play, with 22 wins over ranked opponents highlighted by the Bears’ first National Championship in 2021, as they defeated No. 1 ranked Gonzaga, 86-70, in the national title game. The 2021 Bears also won their first Big 12 Championship in the league’s 25-year history, which was the school’s first conference title in 71 years, then followed it up with a second-straight crown in 2022 by winning their last 5 conference games.

Baylor’s 55-9 (.859) record over the last two seasons is the nation’s best among power conference teams, while the 81-13 (.862) record since 2019-20 is the second-best nationally, trailing only Gonzaga (90-6). In that span, the Bears were ranked in the top 5 for 29 consecutive AP Top 25 polls and finished the 2021-22 season with the nation’s third-longest active streak of 56-straight weeks ranked.

Prior to his time at Baylor, Tang built a powerhouse at Heritage Christian Academy, a birth-through-high school private school in Cleveland, Texas, as both the head boys’ basketball coach and athletic director, guiding the Eagles to four state championships from 1993 to 2003. His program gained national attention in 2001 when junior&nbsp;Cedrick Hensley&nbsp;scored 101 points in a game.

Tang and Heritage Christian became known for producing Division I athletes, including his most-publicized recruit&nbsp;Vakeaton “Von” Wafer, a 2003 McDonald’s All-American who played at Florida State and was drafted with the 39th&nbsp;pick by the L.A. Lakers in the 2005 NBA Draft. His last two teams featured a number of Division I signees including Hensley (Houston),&nbsp;Elijah Miller&nbsp;(Houston),&nbsp;Marlon Pompey&nbsp;(Texas A&amp;M),&nbsp;Lamar Hurd&nbsp;(Oregon State),&nbsp;Tim Mayes&nbsp;(Richmond) and&nbsp;Tyler Jones&nbsp;(St. John’s).

Tang earned a bachelor’s degree from Charter Oak State College in 2007.

Tang was born in San Fernando, Trinidad, West Indies on October 7, 1966. He migrated with his parents (names) to St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands until age 10 when his family moved to Texas. He and his wife,&nbsp;Careylyen&nbsp;(Rae) have a son,&nbsp;Seven, and a daughter,&nbsp;Aylyn.

Tang will take over a Kansas State program that recently finished the 2021-22 season with a 14-17 overall record, including a ninth-place finish in the Big 12 with a 6-12 mark. The hard-luck Wildcats lost 12 games by single digits, including 7 by one possession. Three players earned All-Big 12 honors, including First Team selection and Most Improved Player&nbsp;Nijel Pack&nbsp;and honorable mention and All-Defensive Team member&nbsp;Markquis Nowell.

K-State names a new head basketball coach

Geary County has been chosen to receive funding from Emergency Food and Shelter Program. The awarded funding total is $12,004, to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. The selection was made by a National Board that is chaired by the U. S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; The Jewish Federations of North America, The Salvation Army; and, United Way Worldwide. The National Board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.

A Local Board made up of a Geary County Commissioner, representatives from American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, Salvation Army, United Way and others will determine how the funds awarded to Geary County are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area. The Local Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under this phase of the program.

Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: 1) be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, 2) be eligible to receive Federal funds, 3) have an accounting system, 4) practice nondiscrimination, 5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 6) if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.

Geary County has distributed Emergency Food and Shelter funds previously with the Food Pantry, homeless shelter, The Salvation Army, and others. These agencies were responsible for providing food, utility assistance, and/or lodging.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are searching for a suspect who fled from officers in Riley County.

Just before 9p.m. Sunday, officers filed a report for flee and elude, possession of stolen property, and interference with LEO near the intersection of Lasita Road and Bala Rd. in the unincorporated Riley County community of Bala, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 26-year-old male suspect fled from officers in his car after being told he was being detained. 

Officers pursued him but terminated after the suspect crossed into Clay County. Clay Center and Clay County officers resumed pursuit into Clay County and later terminated as well.&nbsp;

&nbsp; My family and I recently enjoyed a few days off the farm having some fun in the snow in northern New Mexico.&nbsp; While homeward bound from our spring break ski trip, there were signs of a new season quickly approaching during our drive. Over our nearly eight hours on the road, our window views changed from mountainous snowy landscapes highlighting herds of grazing elk to wintery grasslands dotted with antelope.&nbsp; As we traveled from New Mexico into Oklahoma and then through western Kansas, the rangeland views slowly changed to farm ground. Remnants of the 2021 cotton, corn and sorghum crops were ever present as we took in the landscape. Mama cows and their young calves now occupied the fields that had grain harvested from them last fall.&nbsp; We could also see that this year’s wheat crop was slowly coming out of dormancy. As we continued eastbound back to our home, the wheat fields that displayed small patches of greens among fields of mostly drab browns slowly transformed into larger and more colorful sections of green. The color variations continued to change as we continued towards our central Kansas home. While appreciating the extra hour of daylight during our drive, I was able to take in the view of the fields as we got closer to our farm. The evening sunlight allowed me a glimpse of a sure sign of a quickly-approaching spring as we returned to our neighborhood. Carpets of vividly green wheat fields occupied my view. The bright green blanketed entire fields and provided an unexpected “pop” of color. The color was so intense and obviously noticeable that I immediately pointed it out to everyone in the car. We had only been gone a few days, but within that time spring had clearly sprung!&nbsp; The bright green views not only offered my family a warm welcome home but provided me with a simple reminder that we are getting closer to the end of a long, dreary and cold winter.&nbsp; Those beautiful windshield views of bright green fields provided me a gentle assurance that warmer temperatures, longer days and our busy season on the farm are just around the corner.&nbsp; As the days continue to get longer and warmer, the wheat near our home continues to showcase its magnificent beauty with its dazzling pop of emerald. While some might believe that the view of a waving golden wheat field in the summer is one of the best views in the world, I’d argue the magnificent green fields of wheat in the spring are near the top of my list. To me, it’s a color that represents an awakening that ushers in the promise of new life, growth and warmer days to come.&nbsp;&nbsp;

DICKINSON COUNTY —A Kansas man was injured in an accident during a police chase just after 7:30p.m. Sunday in Dickinson County is now in jail.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a&nbsp;was Herington Police were in pursuit of a 1999 Chevy S-10 pickup driven by Matthew R. Mell, 34, Herington southbound from Herington to U.S. 56 Business Highway.

The driver lost control as he attempted to make a right turn onto 400 Avenue and the pickup rolled.

EMS transported Mall to the hospital in Herington. After treatment he was booked into the Dickinson County jail on requested charges that include assault on a law enforcement officer, battery of a law enforcement officer, interference with a law enforcement officer, DUI and flee or attempt to elude law enforcement, according to online jail records.

Spring break is about over for Geary USD 475 schools, with students going back to class on Monday. 

The District has announced via social media that masking will be optional for children in Fort Riley schools.&nbsp;Staff that are fully vaccinated do not need to wear a mask. Adults and staff that are unvaccinated are still required to wear a mask, in accordance with Fort Riley's policies.

Fort Riley also noted that if COVID cases increase significantly, this mask policy may change.&nbsp;

On March 7th the Board of Education made wearing a face mask optional in off-post schools in Junction City, Milford and Grandview Plaza but masks were still required in on-post schools in order to comply with regulations then in effect on Fort Riley.

Junction City Commissioners have awarded a bid totaling $256,996 for installation of new storm drainage along the 500 and 600 blocks of South Eisenhower Drive.&nbsp; Ray Ibarra, Public Works Director, said the street in that area has deteriorated due to water coming off a nearby church parking lot. "It has caused major potholes and deterioration, alligator cracking, due to the water underneath the subgrade."

Ibarra said stormwater improvements will be made to the underground system on the back side of the curb. That will tie in to the Spruce Street storm drain system and water will empty into Homer's Pond. Two drains dropping water off onto Eisenhower Drive will be eliminated.

The bid amount approved for the project is $44,634 below the engineer's estimate.&nbsp;

--Regional 4-H Day will be held Saturday, March 26th in Clay Center at the high school. The schedule is posted on the Geary County 4-H web site, according to the county's 4-H news letter.

K-State Research and Extension is offering a free, educational, Medicare Basics: New to Medicare workshop online via Zoom on April 7 at noon.

 Learn the basics of Medicare, including eligibility, how and when to apply, costs, what is covered by the various parts, and how to fill the gaps. Programs available to assist low-income individuals will also be discussed. Anyone interested in learning more about the Medicare maze would benefit from the program, particularly those who are nearing age 65 or who help aging parents with insurance and financial matters.

JCHS Principal Merrier Tart issued a response to a CEO program proposal outlined at this week's Military Affairs Council Advisory Committee meeting in Junction City.&nbsp; She noted that JCHS is responsive to the career goals of the students, local community, and Kansas business and industry needs through Career and Technical Education (CTE). 

"On March 3, JCHS participated in a video conference presentation with you ( Craig Bender ) and Chris Egelston at the Midland Institute for Entrepreneurship. The Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities (CEO) presentation offers a unique business perspective and investment in entrepreneurial opportunities and is available to students in several smaller districts across our state. Although free for schools and students, the CEO program includes an initial chapter fee of $35K, annual chapter renewal fees of $5K, and a three-year $1K pledge from 35 businesses or organizations."

Tart added that Junction City High School has not received a program proposal from CEO. They will, however, continue to seek information about evidence-based programs and practices to determine their feasibility in helping achieve our long-term goal of providing a world-class education for each student.

Junction City High School students could participate in an entrepreneurial class under a proposal outlined by the Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Council Director Craig Bender.

Bender said the program is called CEO, Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities. 'It's an organization that partners with schools to provide an entrepreneurial type class for high schools."

Bender noted that there would be an instructor and 20 students in the class for the first semester. They would work on two projects start to finish. "What's the product we're going to do, how are we going to put together a business plan, what's our service or plan and then trying to sell it." In the second semester each of the students would have their own project and go through the same process.

The program self-started in Illinois and there is now one in Abilene, Kansas. Bender is waiting to hear from JCHS about the proposal. There has not been any final action at this point.

Geary County Commissioners will open bids on unsold tax sale properties at approximately 3:45 p.m. Monday.&nbsp;

Commissioner Trish Giordano confirmed that there were multiple properties which were not sold during a delinquent property tax sale last summer.&nbsp;

The commission will open the bids on Monday with the highest bidder being given the opportunity to buy those lots.

Manhattan —A blind Colobus monkey regained her sight and is once again climbing and scampering around her habitat at Manhattan's Sunset Zoo thanks to cataract surgery performed recently by the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine, according to a media release from the zoo. Rob Chase, Sunset Zoo's primate keeper, said that before the surgery, 27-year-old Mangalisa was usually crouched in a corner moping because she couldn't see to climb in the trees, where her species normally lives. The Colobus monkeys, native to Africa and known for their long, beautiful, black-and-white coat, are popular animals at the Zoo&nbsp;because they are so energetic - climbing and jumping around the enclosure. "They live in the trees," head keeper Savannah Brethauer said. "That was one of our biggest concerns. Mangalisa stopped climbing." Her quality of life had deteriorated to the point that Chase and Brethauer worried about her surviving the winter. "We wanted to do something for her because she was healthy, and just because she is an older monkey doesn't mean she doesn't deserve a chance," Chase said.

Like humans, primates sometimes develop with age a clouding of the lens of the eye known as cataracts. The condition is routinely fixed in humans with surgery to remove the cloud and clear up the lens. Chase said that about a year and a half ago, he noticed that something was wrong with Mangalisa. "It was almost an overnight observation of her," he said. "She would have to feel around and would bump into something. It was like she could only see shadows and bright lights." Chase and Brethauer both have children, and they said caring for Sunset Zoo animals is like having a child. By observing the personalities of the animals and their behavior, the keepers know when something is off. Chase immediately tried to arrange the habitat to accommodate Mangalisa's disability. "We didn't move anything," Chase said. "We kept the water and food in the same place so she could find it. I put grip tape up so she could find her way inside." As her sight deteriorated, Chase said he added shiny metallic duct tape so that when the sun reflected on it, Mangalisa might see shadows and avoid hitting posts. About two months before surgery, Chase noticed yet another change in her vision. She had become completely blind - even shadows or lights didn't produce a reaction from her. Things got to the point that when it rained, Mangalisa would sit outside and not be able to find her way inside. Chase would have to enter the yard and use gentle measures to help guide her out of the inclement weather with as little fear as possible. Fortunately for Sunset Zoo, it has one of the world's most renowned exotic animal schools just down the road at Kansas State University. Sunset is the only Zoo Kansas State University&nbsp;contracts with to provide comprehensive health care for its animals. It's a win-win for both the Zoo and the&nbsp; School of Veterinary Medicine. "There are very few zoos that work directly with veterinary schools and have a relationship like we do," Brethauer said. For K-State, the collaboration gives faculty, interns, residents, students, and nurses hands-on experience with quality care of animals, especially the preventive care Sunset Zoo emphasizes, said Sara Gardhouse, Assistant Professor of Exotic Animal Medicine. "We get to show our residents and students what excellent zoo care is," Gardhouse said. K-State swung into action to help Mangalisa. Gardhouse said K-State staff did a CT scan blood work and evaluated Mangalisa's heart. They concluded that she was in good health other than her sight and hearing. The Ophthalmology department said she had a good chance of regaining sight. In late January, Mangalisa was taken to the veterinary school where Associate Professor of Ophthalmology Jessica Meekins performed cataract surgery. Mangalisa came back to Sunset Zoo the same day, and Chase made a comfortable bed for her in one of the bedrooms away from the other two monkeys, male Bobby and female Azizi. The monkeys could still see one another through a mesh door, which helped assure her troop mate Bobby that she was ok. "It was scary the first couple of days," Chase said. "I would wave in front of the mesh door to the bedroom, and she would back up. She would still run into a wall on one side. It was almost like she was still blind in one eye." It took about two weeks before the other eye began to come around. One warm, sunny day, Chase said he decided to go for it. 'I let her outside, and I can't tell you how much my heart was beating," he said. "She ran out and right up in the trees, which she hadn't done in years." Mangalisa now bounds around the habitat, grabbing ropes, climbing a ladder, and hopping from place to place above the ground. Gardhouse said the case showed how veterinary medicine can be progressive in improving the lives of exotic animals. "It was a very rewarding case for us, especially when we saw how successful it was," she said. Chase and Brethauer said that their seeing the change in Mangalisa has been moving for them and underscores how they are making a difference in the lives of the animals at Sunset Zoo. "From where she was to where she is now is just incredible," Chase said. .&nbsp;

Surgery at K-State gives monkey new lease on life at Sunset Zoo

Two local foundations will provide financial support if Cloud County Community College is obtain a grant for their nursing program. Tracy Geisler, Executive Director of the Geary Community Healthcare Foundation said that organization and the R2 B4 Bramlage Family Foundation will combine to match $15,000 if the college receives the grant. "We will partner together to make sure they get that matching grant."

Geisler added that the Healthcare Foundation will be developing a scholarship program for nursing." We will have that available, I'm hoping by next semester."
