Childs took the oath of office that was presented by Geary County Clerk Rebecca Nordyke at the County Office Building Tuesday morning. Childs said she is excited for the new challenge. "It's something different. I've managed the office for many years. There's things that I haven't done so now I get to do those, so it'll be something new and something different."

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary in Riley County.

Just after 9a.m. Monday, officers filed a report for burglary in the 100 block of S. Oak Street in Ogden, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 60-year-old man reported an unknown suspect broke into two storage units and stole two locks, two Whirlpool washers, and two Whirlpool dryers. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $610. 

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Governor discusses affordable housing opportunities 

Geary County Commissioners have adopted a resolution that commits funding to support the financially challenged Geary Community Hospital.&nbsp; They will use available American Recovery Program Act money to help defray operational expenses and cash flow requirements to ensure the hospital does not face a reduction of services.

Commissioner Trish Giordano said they are non-taxed funds from ARPA received by the county. "This is not something that we're not just going to handle over money. They're going to have to exactly show where this money is going, what they're using it for and why they need it." Giordano added the economic impact if the hospital did not exist would be devastating.

There is a maximum total of approximately three and a half million dollars in available ARPA money. "We're hoping to do other stuff with that so we're just going to take it day by day, explained Giordano.

Commission Chair Alex Tyson explained the funds can help as officials move forward to hopefully try and find a new partnership for the hospital. Also to make sure that we can still provide quality of services to the citizens of Geary County."&nbsp;

Commissioner Keith Ascher said the governing body is trying to buy some time to figure out what we can do. Right we just are trying to get them to slow down a little bit on looking for a partner that they've got in mind, and still trying to keep the hospital open as a full hospital."

SALINE COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 10a.m. Monday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Ford F450 driven by&nbsp; Dayton Berg, 43, Enterprise, was westbound on Interstate 70 six miles east of Salina.

The Ford had just&nbsp;passed another vehicle and was returning to the driving lane when it rear-ended a 2007 GMC Savanna driven by Richard McCauley, 22, Jacksonville, Florida.

EMS transported two passenger in the van 50-year-old Christopher&nbsp;McCrary and 51-year-old Rachel&nbsp;McGrail both of Rocky Ford, Colorado to Salina Regional Health Center. Berg and McCauley were not injured. McGrail was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Jackie Mundt, Pratt County farmer and rancher Our household has only one rule about pets. We cannot buy or seek out pets, they must find and choose us. This rule is not my creation, but it is easy to follow because I have always been apathetic to pets. I don’t dislike animals but lack an interest in pets. I am not the person who stops to talk to dogs in the park or asks about someone’s pets with interest beyond friendliness. Owning a pet has always seemed like a chore I want to avoid at all costs. Life rarely goes how we plan. During the polar vortex cold spell last February, my life was transformed by the unlikely arrival of two new pets. At some point in the bitter cold days, we noticed the appearance of a couple of stray cats. We knew these cats needed help surviving the cold spell and put out food, a heated water bowl and some straw bales to keep them dry, warm and full. The cats continued to show up for meals, and we began to learn their personalities. The female tabby had ninja stealth, which she used to get her food. The grey male was more interested being friends with the tabby. He followed her bellowing the most pitiful “hello-oh” in hopes of becoming her friend. She was not impressed. This created hours of entertainment for us as we watched him try to sneak food without alerting her. We later learned he made that sound constantly when he was looking for others. Fittingly, we named him Hello Kitty After a few weeks, milk was added to our meal offerings in an effort to try to get close enough to pet them. In the spring, the 100 pounds of cat food and somewhere between 5 and 10 gallons of milk paid off. Marc was able to pet the tabby, now named KitCat. She soon discovered the joy of a good scratch behind your ears, and it wasn’t long before both cats lined up for scratches. At some point in this long campaign to convince the cats to become our pets, I went from rolling my eyes to a willing and enthusiastic participant. I was even the first person to let them into the house when they showed signs of curiosity. By fall, KitCat was living as a mostly indoor cat with the personality of a mercurial princess who spends her days issuing orders and punishing those who dare ignore her. She is funny and sassy, demanding and sweet, playful and curious. It became clear by the affection, wrath and possessiveness that KitCat chose me to be her human servant. And that fills my heart with joy and peace. It was a surprise to realize I am not apathetic to pets. I let fear and worry about responsibility color my decisions and convince me cats weren’t that great. KitCat reminded me that my capacity to love and serve others will only grow out of necessity. I would not have willingly sought out this responsibility but when it landed on me, the burden was lighter than expected and completely worth it. We all make excuses and rationalize our reasons for not doing the hard things like volunteering to help, building relationships with new people, giving generously or being selfless. Stop letting those excuses and start asking, who needs me?

Kansas Day Celebration at the Geary County Historical Museum on Saturday attracted nearly 100 people, many of them families, that visited the museum to take part in the event. Along with touring the museum's three floors of exhibits, visitors also tried out pioneer children's chores, created mixed media artwork about the American Bison, planted their own sunflower and decorated a birthday cupcake, all to celebrate Kansas's 161st birthday.&nbsp;

The event was also a kick off event for a new Saturday program series: S.T.E.A.M. Saturdays, which GCHS will be hosting the third Saturday of every month. Each month will have themed activities to help create an interactive learning environment. The next event will be held Saturday, February 19th from 1-4pm and will focus on Black inventors in honor of Black History Month.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Saturday, Feb. 5th is the date for the 78th annual Ground Hog Supper at Lyona United Methodist Church, 1850 Wolf Road in rural Geary County. This will be a carry-out meals only event this year from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Those attending can enter a drive-through line at the south drive way entrance.

The menu will include waffles, pancakes, sausage and homemade ice cream. The cost will be $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12 and free for children 5 and under. Reservations are not required.

78th annual Ground Hog Supper is nearing

(Junction City, KS) – Konza Prairie Community Health Center is one of ten organizations across the state of Kansas to have been awarded more than $1.7 million in Increase the Reach grant funds for projects meant to address health equity and vaccine confidence.

The Increase the Reach Initiative is a partnership between the Wichita State University Community Engagement Institute and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). Increase the Reach provides an opportunity for community-based organizations who have proven success in reaching vulnerable populations to receive funding to continue their work in promoting health equity through vaccinations. The program specifically aims to reach populations experiencing low vaccination rates, including both racial and ethnic minority populations as well as rural communities.

Konza’s share of Increase the Reach funding is $250,000. Konza plans to use these funds to hire community health outreach workers in both Geary and Riley County. This health outreach staff will collaborate with key community partners to increase COVID-19 vaccination capacity across Geary and Riley counties, including among high-risk and underserved populations. Konza community health workers will collaborate closely with local healthcare and public health organizations to organize vaccination activities, develop strategic vaccination plans, amplify COVID-19 vaccine messaging, and address vaccination disparities.

“The healthcare system can be difficult to navigate, the COVID-19 pandemic made it even more difficult. Our goal is to make it easier,” said Lee Wolf, Konza CEO. “We will work closely with community partners to hire community champions and give them the resources they need to connect people to COVID-19 vaccine, testing, and primary care services in both Geary and Riley County.

Konza receives $250,000 grant to create new community health jobs

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health challenges among young people were the leading causes of disability and poor life outcomes,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/surgeon-general-youth-mental-health-advisory.pdf">according to the U.S. Surgeon General.</a>

But now after almost two years of enduring a life-changing pandemic, area mental health professionals say the need for mental health services has increased dramatically — compounded by factors such as social media, political divisions in communities and an overloaded mental health care system.

"Especially toward the fall of 2020, we were starting to see an increase after kids were at home for six months," said Carie Brown of Great Bend-based&nbsp;<a href="https://heartofkansas.com/">Heart of Kansas Family Heath Care</a>. "Symptoms have been more exacerbated by the pandemic."

Brown, a licensed specialist clinical social worker and licensed clinical addictions counselor, said the isolation caused by stay-at-home orders was traumatic for many young people.

"We have kids whose home lives are not good. Food is an issue or safety is an issue," said Brown, a Fort Hays State University graduate and Logan, Kan., native. "During that pandemic time, they were all alone in that."

Pediatric psychologist Matthew Wassom of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.katieswaymanhattan.com/">Katie's Way</a>&nbsp;in Manhattan agreed.

"From March 2020 through the summer and into the fall of 2020 ... they were losing the routine and structure of life," he said. "And then, obviously, you take away one of the most valuable things, which is social functioning.

"Children were spending more time with family. ... That's nice for some families, but not for all families, especially in vulnerable populations," he said.

In rural northwest Nebraska, Catherine Jones-Hazledine, a psychologist with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.westernnebraskabehavioralhealth.com/">Western Nebraska Behavior Health</a>, said mental health issues among her patients have been magnified by current circumstances.

"We see all of the normal things that we would see, but they are just intensifying. A lot of us as providers are worried about parent-child interactions because there were no breaks, worried about parents coping and increases in maladaptive parenting," she said. "We are seeing depressed kids, really lonely kids, especially in high school, where those kids lost milestone after milestone after milestone."

School referrals make up a significant portion of the juvenile patient loads for most mental health providers. Brown said that during the early days of the pandemic, juvenile cases actually saw a slight decrease.

"Kids with behavior or emotional issues, those issues tend to come out in a school setting, in a a structured setting," Brown said. "During that March of 2020 to the fall, there were not a lot of new referrals. But once kids got back into schools, that's when we really started seeing that influx in referrals."

Wassom said his patient load was a mixed bag during that time period.

"Some vulnerable populations had less access to care ... but kids with better resources, more involved parents, more financial resources, we saw them seeking out care for the first time," he said.

The situation was different for Jones-Hazledine, whose practice is integrated in medical settings along with other health providers.

"The doctors are still the first person that people call when they're concerned about their kids out here, that and their pastors and priests," she said. "The kids were still finding their way to us."

Jones-Hazledine said the politics of COVID, coupled with other events on a national scale, have "coalesced into this big ball of conflict" — adding to the stressors for young people.&nbsp;

"We're in a very rural red areas, and there's a lot of division about what it all means and what to think. That's been hard for everybody, but especially to the young people. It's super confusing," she said. "There are kiddos out there whose family believes in the science, and those kids go to school and go to class with kids who believe differently. ... And can be teased or mocked.

"Bullying is always something with young people, but it's jut different now," she added. "The kids see there are adults often engaging in conflict over medical issues, issues of what students should learn."

Social media and "screens" also have played an enormous role in mental health challenges, the providers said.

"Electronics are a huge issue. They've become the babysitter. They've become an easier method than actively engaging and trying to do things as a family," Brown said. "As parents, we all have to look at that and be honest about it. ... It creates more obstacles than people realize."

During the isolation period, young people used social media increasingly to stay connected with their peers, but also faced a heightened risk of being bullied or engaging in risky online behavior.

"Digital stuff is always worse," said Jones-Hazledine. "As a society, we'll say things to each other and treat each other on social media that we would never say in person. It's grown over time, and there is no consequence. "

One of her student patients recently paraphrased a quote from Oscar Wilde: "Give a man a mask, and he'll tell you the truth."

"Not just the positive, but the negative. ... It's more honest, but we are also more harsh," she said.

While Wassom said he doesn't have "blanket hate" for screens and social media, he agreed the isolation drove more kids to increased screen time, often to the detriment of those children.

"If a family system doesn't have a good process set up, then you see the negative side of social media and the internet," he said. "We've seen a higher rate of tech addiction-type behaviors and a lot of issues of negative side effects of social media platforms."

Wassom compared device use among young people to driver's education.

"It's about social media literacy, trying to teach children before they ever lay hands on a device how to use that device in an healthy manner," he said, noting no one would give the keys to a car to an untrained child an expect them to drive safely away.

While those in junior high and high school are experiencing a "new normal," some younger children will retain little, if any, recollection of what life was like pre-COVID — which could be a positive, Wassom said.

"If you have a 5- or 6-year-old who is now 8 or 9, they have a good stretch of their early elementary development done during a pandemic," he said. "They may not have a clear picture of how things are when there is not a pandemic, and maybe some of them are doing a bit better, and they've adapted in their resilience."

In Jones-Hazledine's area of western Nebraska, one of the most troubling aspects of COVID is what she is hearing from teachers and schools.

"We have heard over and over again that the kids they're teaching right now are a good year behind socio-emotionally. The year of isolation really took a toll on everything," she said. "Kids are resilient, but to hear that across the board in all different kinds of schools, it's kind of mind-blowing.

In a June 2021 study, the U.S. Surgeon General's office reported depressive and anxiety symptoms double during the pandemic, with 25 percent of young people experiencing depressive symptoms and 20 percent experiencing anxiety. Suspected suicide attempts increased 51 percent for girls and 4 percent for boys compared to 2019.

"It's a combination of everything we've talked about — feelings of isolation, exposure to things through screen time, this extremely difficult situation for kids and for parents," Brown said. "There's been an increase in suicidal behaviors and that is very concerning."

Like most every sector in the U.S. economy, mental health health providers are struggling with staffing issues in their clinics.

"We are absolutely overwhelmed, much more so than we were in the first year of the pandemic. The need is through the roof," Jones-Hazledine said. "Most practices out here, there are two- to three-month waiting lists. This is source of great stress to the providers in my practice."

Wassom said Katie's Way sees patients from eastern to far western Kansas.

"It speaks to the shortage of certain types of providers across the whole state," he said.

Brown agreed, noting her clinic is seeking an additional behavior health professional, as well a additional nursing staff.

Jones-Hazledine said she had to enforce a mandated break over the holidays. Her staff is dealing with what she called "compassion fatigue," and battling their own symptoms of burnout.&nbsp;

The U.S. Surgeon General's office said "there is much to be done" to support the mental health of children, including:

•&nbsp;Recognizing mental health is an essential part of overall health. •&nbsp;Empowering youth and their families to recognize, manage and learn from difficult emotions. •&nbsp;Ensuring every child has access to high-quality, affordable and culturally competent mental health care. •&nbsp;Supporting the mental health of children in educational, community and child care settings. •&nbsp;Addressing economic and social barriers to care. •&nbsp;Increasing data collection to more rapidly identify mental health needs.

Brown said access to services is crucial, as well as shaking the concept that mental health concerns is viewed through a stigmatized lens.

"Mental health has been seen like it's something to be ashamed of forever. The reality is it's nothing to be ashamed of," she said. "Everyone has felt sad, anxious, depressed —&nbsp;but there is help. It's important for people not to enter with that bias that it's something wrong.

"The more open people are to getting help, the more likely it is that it can be overcome and it can get better."

Wassom said there might be a silver lining in the pandemic for some children.

"I've got some hopeful optimism. When you look at research of adverse events, there are still a lot of kids out there who have good resiliency, good support and positive relationships," he said. "They can come through fairly stressful situations fairly well developed. They could be strengthened and have developed new skills that other generations don't have."

<a href="https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/surgeon-general-youth-mental-health-advisory.pdf">The U.S. Surgeon General's report</a>&nbsp;issued a series of recommendations for schools, families, communities, the media, providers and others to help more young people navigate mental health issues.

"If we each start reorienting our priorities to create accessible space in our homes, schools, workplaces, and communities for seeking and giving assistance, we can all start building a culture that normalizes and promotes mental health care," the report said. "This is the moment to demand change — with our voices and with our actions. Only when we do will we be able to protect, strengthen, and support the health and safety of all children, adolescents, and young adults — and ensure everyone has a platform to thrive."

"Symptoms have been more exacerbated by the pandemic."Brown, a licensed specialist clinical social worker and licensed clinical addictions counselor, said the isolation caused by stay-at-home orders was traumatic for many young people."We have kids whose home lives are not good. Food is an issue or safety is an issue," said Brown, a Fort Hays State University graduate and Logan, Kan., native. Children's mental health an increasing concern as COVID lingers

Childs will serve as Geary County Treasurer

Kathy Tremont brought a long and successful career as Geary County Treasurer to a close on Friday. It was her final day in the office before she retires.&nbsp;

Tremont said it was bittersweet. "I'll always miss working with the people and that means the people here in the office and also, all the people that come in because that's what it's all about. " Tremont added the most rewarding part of the job is meeting and dealing with the people.&nbsp;

Tremont began working in the Treasurer's office in May of 1977 and first ran for county treasurer in 1992. She was elected and started serving as treasurer in early 1993.

The outgoing treasurer called the job challenging but rewarding. "I could honestly say every day I walk in whether or not I have plans or not for the day it's just one of those jobs you never know what's going to happen the next day, and I really like that."

In her retirement Tremont plans to travel some with her sister, attend K-State football games, spend time with her grandchildren and work in her backyard.&nbsp;

A large contingent of supporters gathered at the Geary County Office Building Friday afternoon to honor Tremont during a retirement party. Her retirement is official on Feb. 1. She will be succeeded in the Treasurer's post by Sherri Childs.

East Chestnut Street and some local parks were the focus of clean up efforts by a group of Fort Riley Soldiers and the Executive Director of the Society of the 1st Infantry Division, Phyllis Fitzgerald, on Friday morning.

Fitzgerald estimated that approximately 100 Soldiers from 1-6 Cavalry Regiment participated in the effort to pick up trash and tree limbs and branches.&nbsp; The parks that received attention were Heritage, Fifth Street, Sertoma and Coronado.&nbsp;

This annual state holiday celebrates the founding of the state and the history of the people. This year the Geary County Historical Society is celebrating the 161st anniversary of Kansas's statehood by hosting a family fun day.

Historical Society Executive Director Heather Hagedorn said that the Kansas Day Celebration, which will take place on Saturday from 1-4 p.m. at the museum (530 N. Adams), will include activities like growing your own sunflower, pioneer games and of course some birthday cake. This is a free event and a great opportunity to come out, learn about local and state history, while also participating in S.T.E.A.M. activities.&nbsp;

Junction City Municipal Court Judge Michael McKone said Friday that in recent days there have been at least two people that have entered the Municipal Court main courtroom indicating that they had been exposed to COVID-19 and should have been quarantined. Phyllis Fitzgerald is coordinating a clean up at various Junction City locations on Friday. She said Soldiers from 1-6 Cavalry Regiment from Fort Riley will join her in clean up projects. Approximately 100 to 115 Soldiers are expected to participate. "So we'll be down around East Chestnut Street and we'll also focus on some of the parks in town and just pick up trash. If we've still got branches and limbs laying around we're just going to try to consolidate those in different piles in the different areas. " Fitzgerald added that City personnel would then pick up the branches and limbs.

Fitzgerald said they'll also be working in Coronado, Sertoma, Heritage, Fifth Street Parks and she also plans to look at Grant Avenue as well,. Work begins at 9 a.m. Friday.

 Soldiers will help with clean up effort

KDOT will begin the Traffic Signalization for the K-18/Karns Roundabout Project starting on February 1st.

According to Junction City Public Works Director Ray Ibarra, traffic on K-18 will be down to one lane signalized traffic between Munson Rd and Spring Valley Rd. There will be no access onto Karns Drive to the Middle School from K-18.

Traffic to the Middle School will be only on Wildcat Lane. During hours of 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. and 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. on Wildcat Lane there will only be “Right Hand Turn Only” traffic during the stated hours.

The work involved will be constructing a roundabout on K-18 that will serve the Middle School and the New High School with the projected time for completion for June 2022.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Governor’s Council on Fitness (GCOF) presented the 2022 Kansas Health Champion Awards during the Community Health Promotion Summit today, Thursday, January 27.

The Governor’s Council on Fitness developed the Health Champion Award to recognize and promote exemplary contributions to fitness in Kansas. Those recognized include an individual and organization and honorable mentions in each category.

“The winners were selected for the exceptional efforts they have put forth to model, encourage and promote fitness in Kansas,” said Jody Hoener, GCOF Awards Chair. “Their efforts have made a positive impact on their communities and inspired others around them to get involved.”&nbsp;

&nbsp;“Congratulations&nbsp;to this year’s Health Champions,” said Janet Stanek, Acting Secretary. “We thank you for the work you have done across Kansas to promote the importance of fitness in your communities.”

Mike Goodwin&nbsp;of Topeka is a longtime volunteer and board member with Kansas Trails Council (KTC), an all-volunteer nonprofit dedicated to building and maintaining natural-surface trails for public use. However, Goodwin’s commitment to ensuring that every community has access to a safe place to walk, hike or bike far transcends even KTC’s laudable mission.

Elizabeth Burger of Sunflower Foundation, who nominated Goodwin, said, “Our foundation has had the honor of working with Mike for the past nine years. During this time, I have witnessed how he has donated his time to travel the entire state of Kansas to personally mentor, guide and work along dozens of communities and nonprofits that want to build a trail in order to have a safe, accessible place to be physically active in the outdoors. Mike listens to each community and their specific needs and priorities regarding a trail and provides invaluable support and technical assistance every step of the way.”

Salud + Bienestar’s mission is to provide information to empower, lead and connect community members to live a healthier life within the traditional Spanish-speaking cultures. They provide relevant health information and education to help Spanish-speaking individuals work through the barriers they face when addressing complex issues, such as navigating the health care system, gaining access to affordable fresh and nutritious foods and bringing community members closer together.

Shelley Rich, who nominated Salud + Bienestar, said, “They are passionate about the health of residents in North Wichita and are a trusted source of information. Salud + Bienestar goes above and beyond to promote health and fitness to those they serve. Their work as a liaison between health and social services and the community has improved the access, quality control and cultural competence of the service delivery to the Spanish-speaking community.”&nbsp;

Clyde Jones&nbsp;of Manhattan turned 99 years old in December 2021. For nearly a century, he has modeled, encouraged, and promoted health, fitness, and wellness in the broadest sense. Jones was the leading force in organizing the Community Health Council, bringing community partners (city, county hospital, school board, public health, etc.). In addition, Jones wrapped up his 10th Annual C. Clyde Run last fall, which raises funds each year for Shepherd’s Crossing, a local philanthropic organization.&nbsp;

Connie Satzler, who nominated Jones, said, “Physical activity and fitness are a pillar of Clyde’s lifestyle and legacy. His efforts in developing coordination and collaboration among health care providers has had a lasting effect of making health more accessible to low-income populations and more efficiently delivered. He is always looking for new opportunities to get involved in the years ahead to better his community and to keep making new friends along the way.”&nbsp;

Colby United Methodist Church&nbsp;(UMC)&nbsp;has participated in programs that seek to address food insecurity, such as partnering with the school district and other organizations to support the Summer Food Service Program for their community. They have worked with the Thomas County Coalition to start a community garden, plus Colby UMC has worked with additional partners in the community to support a free bike-share program.

Katie Schoenhoff, who nominated Colby UMC, said, “Colby United Methodist Church has long demonstrated an outstanding level of commitment and service to the health and wellness of both congregation and community, going beyond expectations to address not only immediate needs but also the underlying social determinants of health. Their partnerships with local organizations have supported both the sustainability of their efforts and increased community engagement.”

Manhattan man recognized as a KDHE health champion

Plans are being formulated for the Freedom Fest JC celebration that will be held in Junction City this year. The celebration is scheduled July 1-4. Committee Chair Nate Butler has confirmed that there are tentative plans for a carnival during the festival with the carnival beginning on June 30th and running through July 4th. 

" We are finalizing some contracts with the entertainment as well as the carnival. The carnival organization is WEEE Carnival Enterprises."&nbsp;

Butler stated that the focus for the celebration will be on a party in downtown Junction City. "Lot of things for families during the day and then the evening will be our concert series." Organizers are finalizing plans for vendors and food for the celebration as well.

Sundown Salute is also scheduled to continue this year with activities ranging from a parade in Junction City to concerts in Milford.

As of February 1st, 2022, the Geary County Health Department and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) will no longer conduct COVID-19 contact outreach and monitoring, otherwise known as contact tracing.

Contact tracing is when Public Health notifies close contacts to let them know that they were exposed to an infectious disease and tells them about the signs and symptoms to watch out for. Participation in contact tracing has always been voluntary. The decision to end contact outreach and monitoring was made due to the surge in the amount of positive COVID-19 cases, and the public's willingness to participate has diminished since the beginning of the pandemic.

"As we enter the third year of this pandemic, public health has to begin to adjust the level of response to help alleviate the strain on the Public Health system," Janet Stanek, Acting Secretary, said. "The pandemic is far from over, but this step is a move toward managing COVID-19 as an endemic disease. The responsibility of protecting yourself and others belongs to all of us."

People who are positive for COVID-19 will now be responsible for letting their close contacts know about their potential exposure. Additionally, if the individual with COVID-19 exposed others at high-risk settings such as schools, correctional facilities, long-term care facilities, homeless shelters, daycares, and churches, KDHE will notify the setting. The setting will be responsible for identifying close contacts and notifying them about the potential exposure.
