MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a reported theft in Manhattan.

Just after 7a.m. Monday, officers filed a report for theft in the 700 block of Highland Ridge Drive in Manhattan on January 24, 2022, around 7:10 a.m.&nbsp;

A 24-year-old man reported an unknown suspect stole his white 2006 Nissan Altima with the keys and a wallet left inside. Financial cards in the wallet were later used by the unknown suspect. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $2,670. The car was later located by Ft. Riley Police on Vintage School Rd. and returned to the owner. Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Cloud County Community College is planning to start a welding program at their Geary County campus. On Monday the Geary County Commission agreed to allot $50,000 to allow the school to help rent a 53-foot trailer that could serve as a welding lab. The funds are derived from a fund containing rent paid by the college. Commissioners will then evaluate future options going forward, ranging from possible expansion of a garage on the school's Junction City campus to construction of a new building.&nbsp;

Vice President for Academic Affairs&nbsp; with the school, Kimberly Zant,&nbsp; indicated that classes would be offered in the evening. The certificate that would be earned by students would consist of 18 credit hours spread over two semesters. "So we could appeal to the adult learner and hopefully some of the high school students will come over."

Officials reported to the commission that there are currently 20 welding job openings within a 25-mile radius and 100 within 50 miles.

County commits $50,000 to help start a community college welding program

MANHATTAN, KAN. –&nbsp;Law enforcement has been made aware of Snapchat messages sent to students in Manhattan regarding potential school violence on Tuesday, according to a media release from the Riley County Police department.

Police not believe these messages are a credible source of information or originate from a local source.

Police are currently working with the Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office and&nbsp; local schools to ensure the safety of students and schools.

Any individuals that engage in these threats will be taken seriously by both the local school districts and RCPD. Participation in social media threats, on or off school grounds, could result in school discipline and/or criminal charges.

USD 383 plans for all schools to be open on Tuesday.

Police will remain vigilant and investigate any rumors and/or threats that may arise. If anything develops, we will communicate with the schools, parents and community immediately.

Please speak with your student about this and ask them to not share any threatening posts and messages. Instead, please remind them if they see something, say something to a trusted adult.

RCPD investigates snapchat messages of alleged school violence

MANHATTAN, KAN. –&nbsp;With current RCPD Director Dennis P. Butler’s pending retirement, the Riley County Law Enforcement Agency,&nbsp; the Law Board,&nbsp; has named Assistant Director Kurt Moldrup to the position of Interim Director for the Riley County Police Department, effective February 1, according to a media release from the RCPD.

Moldrup started at RCPD as a patrol officer in March 1985 and was promoted to Captain in May 2009. During his tenure, Moldrup has risen through the ranks and served in Investigations, Internal Affairs, Public Information Officer as well as serving as a Patrol, Jail, and Support Division Commander.

“I’m willing to serve in any capacity necessary to meet the needs of the department and the citizens of Riley County,” Interim Director Moldrup said.

Moldrup will serve as the Interim Director until the Riley County Law Board appoints a new Director.

Since last Friday Geary Community Hospital has tested 101 people for COVID-19 with 72 of those testing positive. Hospital officials confirmed that's a positivity rate of 71.2%.

100th birthday celebration is planned

Jazz was a weekend highlight at the C.L. Hoover Opera House when the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra. It was all part of an effort to support the Aging Well senior living campus project in Junction City.

Henry Ford once said, "Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success." This is the case with many non-profit organizations in Junction City and was a contributing factor in the success of the jazz concert held Saturday to benefit Aging Well at the Spring Valley Campus.

Duane Blythe, Co-chair of Aging Well’s Board of Directors shared, “We are so thankful for The R2B4 Bramlage Family Foundation and the C.L. Hoover Opera House for going the extra mile to bring such a well-known orchestra to Junction City as well as give us the opportunity to share about the Aging Well project. We also would like to thank the Chamber of Commerce for helping promote the event as well as all who purchased tickets.”

Theresa Bramlage of The R2B4 Bramlage Family Foundation commented, “Our foundation is excited to be involved with Aging Well but also many other projects that we know will benefit Junction City. We are especially grateful when organizations come together to support one another. This concert was a joint effort, and we were thrilled to be a part of it.”

The proceeds from ticket sales and donations are designated towards Aging Well’s goal of raising $3.5 million to build a senior living campus offering small homes providing long term care and assisted living services. Blythe shared, “The community has been extremely supportive of the Aging Well project which has received over $2.2 million in donations since May of this year."

Optimist International and affiliates like the JC Breakfast Optimist Club, Inc. will celebrate Optimist Day on February 3 this year. In our world where there is division, hate, fear and disrespect, Optimist Club members around the world have regularly scheduled Celebrations of Optimism. During the celebrations, members are encouraged to counter all the negativity that surrounds us and to especially be “Friends of Youth”.

Youth are constantly watching the actions and listening to the words of adults. They model what is seen and heard in person, on tv and on electronic devices. Adults need to be positive, optimistic, caring people who show youth that life and living in a world of peace with purpose is better than the alternative of being negative, pessimistic, and hurtful.

Optimist Club members are reminded at every meeting during the recitation of the Optimist Creed “to be so strong that nothing can disturb our peace of mind; to talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person we meet; to make all our friends feel there is something in them; to look at the sunny side of everything and make our optimism come true; to think only of the best, work only for the best and expect only the best; to be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as we are about our own; to forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future; to wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature we meet a smile; to give so much time to the improvement of ourselves that we have no time to criticize others; to be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.”

Kim Baldwin, McPherson County farmer January generally means implementing warmer socks, warmer drinks and warmer meals on our farm. The days require additional layers of work clothes while we load our stored grain into trucks headed to feed yards, mills or ethanol plants. Breakfast at our table is now enjoyed with the addition of warm mugs of hot cocoa before the kids have to bundle up to catch their bus for school. Meals are planned to intentionally utilize the oven to warm the kitchen while also making food that will warm bellies. &nbsp; It’s no secret I’m not a fan of winter. The colder and darker days do not make me favor this season in the slightest. In fact, if I had a choice, I’d spend my winter days as far south as possible. &nbsp; The extra layers, constant chill and seemingly dreary days do not bode well with me. They never have, and I suspect they never will. Perhaps it’s because I was a beach and desert dweller in my childhood. Perhaps it’s the many memories from the early days of my marriage of cold, newborn calves being brought inside the house to get warmed up and healthy. Perhaps it’s the idea that my children can’t enjoy recess outside due to the windchill. Whatever the reason, winter will always rank last for me. &nbsp; Yes, the chill of winter has set in. And with that, I’m constantly on the lookout for reminders to help me adjust my attitude and warm my spirit during this time of the year.&nbsp; &nbsp; During my daily walk to check the mail, I look forward to opening the box to discover a new catalog highlighting seeds and gardening essentials. It’s a reminder that spring planting is near, and I have the opportunity to plan for a future harvest of homegrown goodies during these cold days. &nbsp; The beautifully made quilts and blankets I have been gifted over time have now been brought out of storage and added to the backs of our sitting chairs or spread over beds. All too often these handmade treasures seem too heavy or too hot during the rest of the year, but now are a perfect addition. These items not only offer warmth while I read in the evenings or snuggle in at night; they also warm my heart as I remember those who made these precious gifts. &nbsp; Since the winter’s cold pushes my kids and husband into the house sooner in the evenings, I have the opportunity to enjoy more of their company. Whether it’s to play a game together, facilitate a science experiment or crafting session, or simply sitting together to enjoy a movie, I know once the days get longer and warmer this time will become less frequent. Having my little family together is something I cherish during the cold, dark winter months.&nbsp; &nbsp; Yes, even in the depths of winter, there are reminders of warmth all around. You just have to recognize them when you experience them.

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) – the lead Republican for the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee – released a statement regarding Kansas VA hospitals assuming their Fourth Mission role of providing back-up care to Kansas hospitals that need additional support to care for COVID-19 patients:

“The VA plays an integral role in our nation’s health care safety net through its Fourth Mission to support local hospitals and make sure patients have access to the critical care they need. Throughout the pandemic, I have worked to make certain VA has the resources needed to support our health care system. Thank you to the Kansas VA hospitals and VA health care personnel who are assisting medical facilities across the state and to all of our health care workers who continue to care for Kansans while experiencing bed and staff shortages.

Kansas hospitals in need of beds for non-veteran COVID patients can submit a patient transfer request through Kansas Mission Control. Mission Control and the VA will then work to identify the best potential receiving facility for the patient.&nbsp;

Blue Jay coach Nick Perez said the Bobcats broke Junction City down defensively. "We talk about kind of being on an island tonight. They've got a lot of guys that can shoot it and we got lost." Perez added the Blue Jays would watch the ball and Basehor-Linwood would then score via the back door, getting layups early in the contest.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Perez thought Junction City ( 8-2 ) played well in the first quarter but struggled in the second and did not make shots.

Nominations are sought for the annual Chamber of Commerce dinner

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.3% in December. This was a decrease from 3.6% in November and a decrease from 4.7% in December 2020.

“Kansas ended the year with sustained progress towards economic recovery in the state,” said Secretary Amber Shultz. “Estimates indicate that employers continued to add jobs in December and the unemployment rate declined to 3.3%.” 

The jobless rate across northeast Kansas remains extremely low, with the rate in Riley County dropping from 2.2 percent in November to 2 percent. Geary County saw a drop from 3.5 to 3.1 percent. Clay The rate in Pottawatomie, Wabaunsee and Clay counties is below 2 percent.&nbsp;

Seasonally adjusted job estimates indicate total Kansas nonfarm jobs increased by 800 from November. Private sector jobs, a subset of total nonfarm jobs, increased by 2,000 from the previous month, while government decreased by 1,200.

“Kansas nonfarm jobs increased for the seventh consecutive month as gains in the private sector offset a decline in government jobs in December,” said Labor Economist Emilie Doerksen. “Although the rate of growth has slowed, December estimates indicate continued expansion for trade, transportation, and utilities as well as continued recovery in manufacturing.”

Since December 2020, Kansas seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 38,600. This change is due to an increase of 36,500 private sector jobs and 2,100 government jobs.

Jobless rate continues decline in Geary Co., across the region 

More information has been provided by the Geary County Sheriff's Department on the Friday accident involving a school bus and a tractor.&nbsp;

Deputies responded to the 7400 block of Davis Creek for an injury accident. Justin Sayson, Junction City, was driving a school bus with four student passengers southbound when a 1994 John Deere 6400 tractor driven by Gus Gustafson entered the roadway. The school bus struck the front bucket of the tractor causing heavy front end damage to the bus.&nbsp;

Sayson was extricated and transported to Geary Community Hospital for further evaluation. The student passengers were evaluated by EMS on scene and released with no injuries. Gustafson had no complaints of injury at the time and was released at the scene.&nbsp;

The school bus was removed by TLC Wrecker Service.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -A Geary Co. Schools bus driver was taken to the hospital after a collision in Southeast Geary Co.

USD 475 told 13 NEWS that a tractor pulled in front of the bus. They say the driver was extracted from the vehicle and walked to a gurney after the accident. They were taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Four students were on board, all of whom were cleared by medical responders on scene.

The district could not confirm the exact location of the accident.

Director of Communications and Marketing Ashley King said it's intended to keep patients with COVID-19 out of the facility and get them tested for COVID first. "Anyone who is having symptoms with COVID, whether they see our providers or not at our hospital, are able to get tested if they're having symptoms."

Symptoms can range from a headache and fatigue to a cough. "Almost like you have a cold symptoms. So that's what we're seeing right now trending."

The number to call is 785-210-4214. Leave a message and your call will be returned. King stated that they are averaging about 100 calls per day. "You are either scheduled that day to be tested for COVID or that next morning so we have a pretty good turnaround time on it."

MANHATTAN — Design assistance provided by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/tdi" target="_blank">Technology Development Institute</a>&nbsp;at the Kansas State University&nbsp;<a href="https://engg.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Carl R. Ice College of Engineering</a>&nbsp;has led to the design and production of a new product to reduce litter and improve the environment during outdoor recreational activities. Nauti Trash began as an idea from a group of boating enthusiasts who often found litter and other debris left in and around waterways as a result of recreational activities. This was not due to intentional littering but a result of not having a convenient way to secure the trash while being on the water. In an effort to solve this problem and provide people with a product to help promote keeping waterways clean, the team began to brainstorm ideas of how the product should function and its critical aspects. Once team members had developed a concept for the product, they contacted staff at the Technology Development Insitute to design, prototype and test the product. The institute developed an initial design and then assisted in filing a patent application on the product idea. The institute also worked with the team on creation of a brand name, logo, website acquisition and sourced a manufacturer capable of producing the product in large volume. The result of the development effort is the patent-pending Nauti Trash floating trash can. The product has a foam base that allows the device to float on the water and a spring-loaded fabric basket that can be compressed flat while stored and then expanded when in use. The basket accepts a tall kitchen trash can liner and can be used for numerous water-related activities such as pools, canoeing, boating, etc., to secure trash while on the water. The trash can also has a strap that allows the device to be connected to a boat, canoe or dock so that it can be held in place while in use. "It has been a great experience working with the Nauti Trash team on the development of this revolutionary new product," said Bret Lanz, Technology Development Institute commercialization director. "This product meets a need in the marketplace that up to this point has not had an effective solution. Nauti Trash is a perfect example of a team of friends who identify a problem and then develop a solution to meet the need. TDI was able to provide them the engineering and manufacturing support needed to bring the product to reality." The project was funded through the Economic Development Administration EDA CARES Act recovery program. The female-owned company, based in Manhattan, plans to launch the product this spring and is working to develop a distributor network as well as sell the product online. Dinkel explained why city sales taxes on food could not be exempted. "Mostly because a lot of our city tax is committed through bonds and payments and everything else. You just can't do it because it was voted the way it was."

Dinkel updated the city commission on the subject this week.

A temporary vaccination clinic was set up at the Riley Community Center on Fort Riley, welcoming families to wait indoors for children to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

Children and parents were waiting in line before the clinic opened, ready to receive a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

“I was excited, and I just couldn’t wait.” Magdalynn Doan says.

Family groups made their way through the clinic from check-in, to vaccination, ending their visit by picking out a treat.
