IRVING, Texas (AP) — Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor has been added to the College Football Playoff selection committee, replacing Texas AD Chris Del Conte. 

The CFP's announcement comes less than a week after Texas and Oklahoma announced they would be leaving the Big 12 to join the Southeastern Conference in 2025. The 13-member selection committee is comprised of mostly sitting athletic directors along with former players and coaches. 

Each Power Five Conferences is represented by an active athletic director. With Texas in the process of leaving the conference, the Big 12 nominated Taylor to replace Del Conte.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. - Wendy Van Duyne of Stantec presented an update Tuesday night to Junction City Commissioners on the EPA Brownfield Grant, in conjunction with the Flint Hills Regional Council.&nbsp;

The update included highly-informative data from the study that has been conducted throughout the last several months. Van Duyne said that the area that has been under study involves two "catalyst sites," surrounding the intersection of Grant and Washington in Junction City. One being the former filling station on the north side of the intersection, and the other a former lumberyard on the southern side.&nbsp;

According to Van Duyne, a number of suggestions and plans have been presented to the public during various open houses, and will continue at their next open house on Thursday night. For those interested in attending, the event will be held from 4:30-7p.m. at the City Municipal Gymnasium.&nbsp;

"We've been working closely with those property owners to not only vet those development scenarios, but to also think about different ways that those areas could be branded and serve the greater benefit of the community at large," said Van Duyne.&nbsp;

One of the possibilities presented included the use of the space on the north side of the intersection as an "experiential restaurant or brewery that overlooks the Republican River."

According to Ms. Van Duyne, there were three different plans put together, one which is a very "mild," impact to development, one which was phrased as "more moderate," and a third, which was described as a much more "substantial development approach."

FHRC, Stantec provide update on EPA Brownfield Grant 

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating the theft of credit cards in Manhattan.

Just after 3p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for criminal use of a financial card and theft in the 800 block of Commons Place in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

UMB Bank and Landmark National Bank reported two unknown suspects used stolen credit cards to make $1,316.00 in purchases at Target.&nbsp;

ABILENE, Kan. - On Tuesday, August 3, 2021, the Abilene Schools, USD #435 Board of Education held a special board meeting to discuss guidelines designed to assist the administration and teachers as they begin the 21-22 school year with a renewed focus on effective teaching and learning while maintaining a prudent approach to reducing the risk of transmitting COVID-19 among the students and staff.

The Board of Education discussed how the guidelines were designed to provide parents with more opportunities to assume responsibility for their children’s health while outlining how the medical professional duties and school system duties differ.  The guidance allows for several modified quarantine settings that were not possible throughout the 20-21 school year.  At this time, the wearing of masks by students and staff is optional.

The USD #435 Board of Education recognizes the district may not necessarily follow all CDC or KDHE guidelines regarding COVID mitigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;District leadership will, however, monitor community sickness and work with the local health department to provide students with the greatest possible opportunities for continuous face-to-face instruction while being cognoscente of community health needs.

Facemasks optional to start USD 435 school year

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. - In preparation for back to school, Elite Cuts Barbershop in Junction City will hold a community event this Saturday, August 7th from 10 a.m. until "we run out," said Charles Sarvis, a spokesperson for the goodwill event.&nbsp;

Elite Cuts will offer free back-to-school haircuts for students, as well as backpacks filled with school supplies for boys and girls who need them in preparation for the new term. Hot dogs and hamburgers will also be grilled up right outside of the barbershop at 719 w. Sixth Street in Junction City.&nbsp;

According to Sarvis, a large array of local businesses have donated to the cause to make sure as many children as possible in the community have what they need.&nbsp;

Geary County USD 475 students return to school on August 11th, with the exception of Junction City High School students, who will return on August 25th.&nbsp;

An annual tradition, the Fall Classic Golf Tournament hosted by the Geary Community Healthcare Foundation, is scheduled Friday, Sept. 24th at Rolling Meadows Golf Course.

Foundation Executive Director Tracy Geisler said that there will be two times at 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The tournament will raise funds for defibrillators at Geary Community Hospital, said Geisler. "Obviously that's very important equipment and they are in need for new defibrillators right now. They are very costly." The goal is to raise money for eight of them.

The cost to play in the tournament is $110 for each player on teams of four. To sign up contact the Healthcare Foundation or go to their web site.

Breakfast, snacks and an evening steak dinner are part of the event.

Ray Ibarra, Public Works Director, said the project will consist of removing asphalt at the intersection and replacing it with concrete, construction of sidewalks, ramps and crosswalk. KDOT is providing a $200,000 grant to help with the project while the City will be responsible for a $151,000 local cash match, preliminary engineering and design, right of way, utilities, and costs that exceed the maximum state award.

Local funding will come from the Special Highway or federal exchange funds. Work on the intersection could begin in November.

City Commission approves cost share agreement with KDOT

Missouri Highway Patrol now lists a fifth person, Dakota Engel, 29, Junction City as a fatality victim following a two vehicle head-on collision Monday in Cass County, MO.

CASS COUNTY, MO., —Four people including three from Kansas died in an accident just after 11a.m. Monday in Cass County, Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Peterbilt semi driven by Everett E. Ashley, Lowry City, Missouri, was southbound on MO 7 at Route Z.

The driver lost control of the semi. It traveled down an embankment and crossed the median into the northbound lanes of MO 7.&nbsp;

The semi struck a northbound Nissan SUV driven by Stephen W. Bennett, 61, Junction City, head-on.

Ashley and three passengers in the SUV including Gerald R. Dittman, 68, Hope, Kansas and Jean M. Pariseau, 71 Herington, Kansas were pronounced dead at the scene.

Harrisonville EMS transported Bennett to Cass Regional Medical Center where he died. Life Flight transported a third passenger in the SUV identified as Dakota M. Engel, 29, Junction City, to Research Medical Center for treatment, but the Highway Patrol now lists him as a fatality victim.

The Kansas Legislative Research Department says it has updated addresses for the joint House and Senate Committees on Redistricting meetings. The meetings come as the Census begs states to redraw congressional, legislative and State Board of Education districts. It said the redistricting happens after the review of Census data every decade.

According to reports from the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wibw.com/2021/07/07/kansas-lawmakers-plan-hold-14-town-halls-redistricting/" target="_blank">Associated Press</a>, 14 town hall meetings will be held to gather opinions on how political boundaries should be redrawn in 2022. It said the new lines are expected to be in place ahead of the June 2022 candidate filing deadline.

The Associated Press said lawmakers expect Johnson Co. to gain seats while counties in western and southeastern Kansas lose seats. It said lawmakers also expect a heated debate over the borders of Kansas’ four congressional districts.

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) wants to alert Kansans to potential air quality impacts from Western wildfire smoke. 

Ongoing wildfires across the Western U.S. continues to produce dense smoke that is being transported into Kansas by the atmospheric winds.

While some of this smoke is remaining high in the atmosphere there are times when this smoke is being observed at the surface and impacting air quality. These air quality impacts may continue to be seen as long as the Western U.S. wildfires continue to burn.

Smoke can cause health problems, even in healthy individuals. Common health problems include burning eyes, runny nose, coughing and illnesses such as bronchitis. Individuals with respiratory issues, pre – existing heart or lung diseases, children and elderly may experience worse symptoms.

Steps to protect your health on days when particulate matter is present in your community include:

●Healthy people should limit or avoid strenuous outdoor exercise.

 ●People with respiratory or heart-related illness should remain indoors.

 ●People who are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms in particular respiratory or heart-related symptoms, who are currently infected or recently recovered, should remain indoors.

●Help keep indoor air clean by closing doors and windows and running the air conditioners with air filters.

●Keep hydrated by drinking lots of water.

●Contact your doctor if you have symptoms such as chest pain, chest tightness, shortness of breath or severe fatigue.

KDHE: Tips to protect health amid smoke from wildfires

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 8a.m. Tuesday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Honda motorcycle driven by Robert John&nbsp;Nemcik, 73, Marienville, PA., was&nbsp;eastbound on Interstate 70 just east of Frontage Road. 

The motorcycle left the roadway,&nbsp; traveled into the center median and the driver was partially ejected. EMS transported&nbsp;Nemcik to a Topeka hospital. He was wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

There will be a community open house Thursday from 4:30 - 7 p.m. at the Junction City Municipal Gymnasium. A public presentation is scheduled from 5:30 - 6 p.m.

This ties in with a planning study being conducted through collaboration with the Flint Hills Regional Council, City of Junction City, Stantec and property owners. The study is for the area at the corner of North Washington Street and Grant Ave. Feedback is being sought on the next steps for the site.

Junction City police have issued a scam alert.&nbsp; Many elderly individuals are receiving this letter in the mail. from “The Mega Lottery Picker 2021 Lottery Software for Powerball and Mega Millions." It states that the recipient has won a lottery award of 4.5 million dollars. The letter instructs individuals that they can collect the funds after calling a number and providing their bank account information. This is a scam, be cognizant about whom you give information to over the phone or online and what personal information you share. 

This is only one scam that is currently going around. Other common scams occurring right now are typically phone scams and can include the following: Call stating that you owe back taxes and there is a warrant out for your arrest if you do not pay. Call stating that your social security number is expiring due to backed taxes requesting payment to prevent it from expiring. Call stating that you won a substantial amount of money and that you only need to provide your bank account for the deposit. Call from an individual pretending to be a loved one who states that they were either arrested and or in the hospital and need money for bail or medical bills. All of these scams will ask you for personal or financial information and threaten consequences if you don’t do what is asked. 

If you are ever concerned about someone you are talking to on the phone and feel that the situation you are dealing with may be a scam, call the police department at (785)-762-5912. Take a minute to call or check on any elderly family members or friends that you may have to ensure that they don’t fall victim to these scams.

Trish Giordano, County Commission Chair,said during their meeting on Monday the governing body worked on the job description duties and set the salary for the position at approximately $70,000. "Depending on experience we'll go up from there."

Giordano is hopeful of having a financial coordinator hired by the end of September or beginning of October, depending on the quality of applicants.

Lessons taught through 4-H help young people prepare for the future&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Learning by doing has been the experience for generations of young people who have grown-up through the 4-H program. From crafting through woodworking to turning a creative lens on photography to caring for livestock from a young age, 4-H teaches many life lessons through hands-on experiences.&nbsp;

But sometimes there are lessons beyond the project that carry into life, said Wade Weber, state program leader for Kansas 4-H. &nbsp;

“There are skills that we need to practice in order to create a supportive environment for young people to help them see their value while also being able to handle adversity in a positive way,” Weber said. &nbsp;

To that end Weber sees three obstacles that adults and young people must learn to overcome.

“These factors are corrosive to any organization,” Weber said. &nbsp;

To combat the negative influences, Weber names three individual opportunities to move ahead.

Weber said understanding these principles will help young people later in life to overcome the obstacles set before them.&nbsp;

He said: “Our mission is to help young people connect with resources and opportunities to help them grow in their capacity to see themselves as a learner, communicator, collaborator and ultimately a contributor to their local communities.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The driver lost control of the semi. It traveled down an embankment and crossed the median into the northbound lanes of MO 7.&nbsp; 

Ashley and two passengers in the SUV including Gerald R. Dittman, 68, Hope, Kansas and Jean M. Pariseau, 71 Herington, Kansas were pronounced dead at the scene. 

Harrisonville EMS transported Bennett to Cass Regional Medical Center where he died. Life Flight transported a third passenger in the SUV identified as Dakota M. Engel, 29, Junction City, to Research Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. Ashley was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Ashley, Lowry City, Missouri, was southbound on MO 7 at Route Z.The driver lost control of the semi. The first week long break for students will occur at the end of the first week of October. Childcare will be provided via partnership with the Boys and Girls Club. There would be a one week break in January plus the Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring breaks. The final day of the school year would be May 19th.&nbsp;

Other elementary schools and the middle schools in the USD 475 begin classes Aug. 11. Junction City High School starts Aug. 25.&nbsp;

Dr. Reginald Eggleston, Superintendent of Schools, covered the recommendation that was approved by the Board of Education. "At the end of the first quarter we will return and reassess where we are based on data and be able to make the determination if we need to continue on with the mask provision."

USD 475 stated in a release that if a vaccinated student or staff member is exposed to COVID-19, they will have the opportunity to test to stay at school. More information regarding the district’s testing plan will be released by Aug. 11.


The end of the first quarter is Oct. 8th. Officials indicated that the new requirement will not apply on the playground or in sports. The action is being taken following the increase in COVID-19 with the Delta variant.

The move follows similar action by Fort Riley last week.

With daily high temperatures ranging only from 80 to 98 and overnight lows ranging from 63 to 78 there were no temperature records set or tied during July. The high of 98 was reached on the 9th, 29th and 30th. 

Over half the days during July had daily high temperatures at or below the long-term average. The lowest temperature for the month, 63 degrees, was reached on the 8th and the 13th. The hottest July on record was in 1954 with a monthly mean temperature of 87.0 degrees. That month there were 19 days with temperatures of 100 or higher and 6 of those days were 110 or higher! The coldest July is a tie between 1950 and 1967 with a comfortable monthly mean temperature of 73.8.

Several cold fronts rolled through the region during July bringing cooler temperatures and usually some greatly appreciated rainfall. Normal July precipitation is 4.14 inches. Milford Lake received 3.48 inches during July, but Junction City fared slightly better with 4.40 inches, a trend that has been occurring regularly in 2021. Year to date average precipitation through July is 21.10 inches. Milford Lake has received 16.90 inches and Junction City 22.20 inches. 

The wettest July on record was NOT 1951, but a year earlier in 1950 when 13.65 inches of rain flooded the region. In fact, 1951 is only the third wettest month at 12.43 inches. 1948 is second place with 12.99 inches of July rainfall. The driest July was in 1983 when a single rainfall event only managed to generate 0.04 inches of rain!

We usually expect August to bring us slightly cooler temperatures and slightly more rainfall. Daytime highs average 89 at the start of the month but only drop to 87 by the end of the month.
