JUNCTION CITY, Kan. — A packed rodeo arena greeted bronc riders and rodeo queens alike at night two of the Junction City Rodeo. The event brought in a near record crowd, with seldom an empty seat surrounding the arena.&nbsp;

With fans cheering and broncs bucking, Rodeo President Darryl Blocker said, "it feels great to be here because we've got a hell of a crowd."

The event, spanning two days brings cowboys and cowgirls from across the state and into the Geary County fairgrounds each year, but fans were more anxious for action than usual, coming off the COVID-19 pandemic. With that, coupled with near perfect weather, Saturday night was one for the ages.&nbsp;

The event saw a new Rodeo Queen coronated, in Natalee Bray, of Scandia, Kansas dawning the crown. Bray gained the crown thanks to several strong performances in horsemanship, speech, photogenics, and modeling, among other categories. She will maintain her title over the next year, until it is awarded to another local young lady.&nbsp;

A somber moment during the rodeo brought tears to even the toughest bull rider's eye, as a riderless horse rounded the fencing in memory of the late Ben Bennett, who was a co-founder of the Junction City Rodeo in 1993, as well as a highly respected public figure. There was also a photograph hung on the west end of the arena to further enshrine a Junction City Rodeo legend.

When asked what the last week has been like, leading up to the Rodeo, Blocker responded with a straightforward answer, "stressful," he said with a grin. ""It's just, getting everything in order, I mean we do the same things every year, but you get new people, and we just gotta keep making things roll."&nbsp;

The 2021 rodeo was an undisputed success and already has fans excited for more; however, the rodeo is just the beginning of a week long celebration of the Geary County Fair, so there's plenty more excitement on the horizon.&nbsp;

Jace Essig, a member of the Junction City Brigade, came to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning and drilled a single to right field. That hit lifted the West team to a 2-1 victory over the East squad in the Mid Plains League / Conner Taylor All Star Game at Rathert Field Saturday night.

Essig's hit scored Orlando Lorduy of Sabetha with the winning run. Lorduy and Bobby Galindo of Sabetha both reached base following fielding errors by the East, and Ryan Webster of Sabetha drew a walk prior to Essig's single. For his play Essig was named the Most Valuable Player in the game.&nbsp; He recalled what was going through his mind when he got the hit. "Whenever I was a little kid we always dreamed of this, bases loaded, tough situation, just get the job done and Glory to God."

Approximately 450 people were in attendance at Rathert Field for the ballgame which was followed by a huge fireworks display.

League Commissioner Michael Moore enjoyed the event. "The people of Junction City, the people in charge of the Junction City Brigade did an outstanding job, the fans came out. It was a great night, what a great game. "&nbsp;

Brigade General Manager Cecil Aska said there was a good crowd and an exciting crowd that cheered a lot. "I loved the crowd, but what I loved when I did have a chance, there were some really fantastic plays by some of the players." Aska referred to three plays where outfielders left their feet to catch the ball.

The Junction City Brigade presented a check for $250 to the Change4Connor Foundation before the game. Conner Taylor, a former Coffeyville Red Raven pitcher threw the first home game in Baldwin City Blues history in 2014 against a team of ex-collegiate and professional ball players. He earned a win in that inaugural game. He then furthered his baseball career at Arkansas Tech. On Feb. 9, 2016 Connor tragically ended his life.

Connor's family, Marcy, Mike and Ryan, established the Change4Connor Foundation to bring an awareness to suicide prevention and mental health issues. To date the Foundation has provided thousands of dollars in grants and scholarships to various mental health, educational and athletic programs. The Mid Plains League has benefitted by the Taylor's support, annually recognizing the League's Pitcher of the Year with the Connor Taylor Award and Scholarship.

All Star game ends with excitement in the ninth inning

There are 53 active cases of COVID-19 reported by the Geary County Health Department. According to a report released on Friday there were 14 new positive cases and 15 recovered cases. Six people were hospitalized.&nbsp;

Since the pandemic began there have been 1,903 positive cases and 1,818 recovered cases reported by the Health Department.

Geary County Commissioners are scheduled to hold the bid opening Monday&nbsp; at 1:15 p.m. for the Munson Road improvement project on the west side of the new Junction City High School site.

This involves the portion of Munson Road from K-18 to the high school's north property line.&nbsp; The cost will be paid for by USD 475 but the project runs through Geary County.

Munson Road is currently a gravel road and must be upgraded to accommodate increased traffic going to the new high school.

Milford Lake Zone C, the north end of the lake, is listed under a warning. The middle and southern sectors, Zones A and B are under a watch. A warning was issued for the Gathering Pond at Milford Lake, while a watch is in effect for the Geary State Fishing Lake.

Herington City Lake ( Old City Lake ) is covered by a watch while Herington Reservoir ( New City Lake ) is under a warning.

KDHE releases blue green algae advisories

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.7 percent in June. This was an increase from 3.5 percent in May and a decrease from 7.0 percent in June 2020.

“The labor force grew in June as the number of Kansans seeking employment increased,” said Secretary Amber Shultz. “This resulted in a slight increase in the unemployment rate to 3.7 percent."

The jobless rate jumped in counties across the region over May. The Geary County unemployment rate rose from 4.9 percent in May to 5.8 percent in June.

Riley, Pottawatomie and Clay Counties saw a similar increase over 1 percent. Wabaunsee County only saw an increase from 2.6 in May to 3.1 percent in June.&nbsp;

Seasonally adjusted job estimates indicate total Kansas nonfarm jobs increased by 8,100 from May. Private sector jobs, a subset of total nonfarm jobs, increased by 100 from the previous month, while government increased by 8,000.

“Kansas nonfarm jobs increased by 8,100 in June, with the majority of these gains in state and local government. The pandemic disrupted typical seasonal hiring patterns for public schools, which contributed to this large over-the-month change.” said Labor Economist Emilie Doerksen. “Even with these job gains, government job estimates remain 1.8 percent lower than pre-pandemic estimates for February 2020."

Since June 2020, Kansas seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 51,400. This change is due to an increase of 40,100 private sector jobs and 11,300 government jobs.

Red Cross blood drive totals from this week included the donation of 92 units of blood. Coordinator Tom McRae provided the information. The drive was held at the Junction City Municipal Building.

Ben's wife Peggy Bennett noted that he loved rodeo. "He was just a cowboy at heart and he just wanted what was best for the community so they started the rodeo."

Buddy Payne who had just joined the Association in recent months has passed away. He was remembered with a moment of silence.

27th annual Junction City Rodeo opens

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Due to an increase in COVID-19 cases in Dickinson County, the National Archives and Records Administration is closing the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene effective Monday.

“It is with great disappointment that I am ordering the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum closed until public health conditions improve,” said Archivist of the United States David S. Ferriero.

The seven-day average for new COVID-19 cases and the positivity rate in this area both far exceed the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) definition of "high transmission," which is more than 99 new cases per 100,000 and a positivity rate of more than 9.9 percent.

“I am taking this action out of concern for the health of the staff and the visiting public,” Ferriero said.

After closing due to the pandemic in March 2020, the Eisenhower Museum reopened to guests on a limited basis on May 20, 2021, and announced expanded hours on June 16, 2021. 

The National Archives will reopen the Eisenhower Museum as soon as the public health conditions allow.

Geary county Aging Well, Inc. will receive Community Service Tax Credits through a program announced by Governor Kelly where nonprofit organizations can receive them to improve and enhance fundraising efforts for education, healthcare, childcare and housing projects.&nbsp;

Aging Well plans to build three small homes that will provide long-term care to a total of 36 elders with 12 elders per home. They also plan to construct a fourth small home to provide assisted living services to 14 elders. The location will be on the northwest side of Junction City near Spring Valley Road.

The Community Service Tax Credit program provides a 70% tax credit to qualified donors in rural communities with a population under 15,000 and a 50% tax credit in larger communities. For example, a donor making a $1,000 gift in a rural community receives a $700 tax credit when they file their state taxes.

Stuff the Bus collection is set for Saturday

Chapman native and current Manhattan resident, Emily Markley Thiesen, will be the featured vocal jazz soloist at a special series concert at the Abilene City Big Band Concert Thursday, July 22nd at 8 p.m. That is being held at the Royer Band Shell, 619 North Rogers in Abilene.

Thiesen graduated with a degree in Vocal Jazz from the New York School for Jazz in New York City. As a student at Chapman High School she enjoyed summers playing French Horn in the Abilene Community Band.

Thiesen also spent more than 20 years singing and ringing handbells with the First Presbyterian Church in Junction City.

&nbsp;1st Infantry Division Forward from Fort Riley has assumed authority of Atlantic Resolve Mission Command Element. 

The Atlantic Resolve Forward Division Headquarters serves as the intermediate headquarters between U.S. Army Europe and Africa, and U.S. regionally allocated forces deployed throughout the eight eastern European Atlantic Resolve countries of Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.

In February 2018, the 1st Infantry Division deployed to Poznań, Poland for the first time as the Mission Command Element of Atlantic Resolve and continues that tradition&nbsp; today as the Forward Division Headquarters.

“The 1st Infantry Division is proud to return to Poland,” said incoming 1st Infantry Division Forward Commander, Brig. Gen. Andrew Gainey. “To once again demonstrate our continuous commitment in Europe and deterring any nation that threatens the NATO allies and our partners.”

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged child abuse and have made an arrest.

Just after 10a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for aggravated battery and abuse of a child in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department Activity report.

Officers listed a 20-year-old identified as Gerald William Hartman III of Manhattan as the suspect when it was reported he abused an infant. 

The child was transported to Via Christi in stable condition for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. 

Police arrested Hartman&nbsp; on requested charges of abuse of a child and aggravated battery. Hartman is confined in the Riley County Jail awaiting a bond hearing.

RCPD: Manhattan man accused of abuse of an infant

MANHATTAN, KAN. –&nbsp;&nbsp;A Salina man has been arrested on a warrant stemming from a November 2019 aggravated robbery in Manhattan, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

On November 9, 2019 around 11:35 p.m., officers responded to the report of a robbery in the 400 block of Fremont St. A 31-year-old male victim reported two masked suspects robbed him at gun point.

Lee Dennis Noonan, 30, of Salina was arrested Thursday afternoon on requested charges of two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of aggravated kidnapping. Noonan is confined in the Riley County Jail on a $150,000 bond.&nbsp;

Two other suspects have previously been arrested in connection to this case. Aaron Michael Noonan was arrested on September 17, 2020 for two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of aggravated kidnapping. Joseph Pail Trevail was arrested on August 26, 2020 for four counts of intimidation and one count of the following – robbery, kidnapping, criminal threat and harassment. Both remain confined in the Riley County Jail on $150,000 bonds.

K-State is implementing this&nbsp;<a href="https://housing.k-state.edu/living-options/freshmen/index.html" target="_blank">residency requirement</a>&nbsp;to enhance student success. "National research and an analysis of university-specific data both show a statistically significant difference in the first-year retention rate and cumulative first-year grade point average between students who lived on campus versus students who lived off campus," said Thomas Lane, K-State vice president for student life and dean of students. "K-State first-year, full-time students living on campus average higher GPAs, stay in school in higher numbers and graduate faster." Based on data for fall 2018, K-State had an 87.6% retention rate for freshmen who lived on campus compared to a 79.9% rate for freshmen living off campus. For fall 2019, 5% more first-year students who lived on campus stayed in school as compared to first-year students who lived off campus. K-State is not alone in its first-year residency requirement. The university will join all other Kansas Regents institutions, with the exception of the University of Kansas, in requiring freshmen students to live on campus. With this change, K-State will be the seventh of the Big 12 Conference's 10 member schools to require that students live on campus during their first year. Students may apply for an exemption to the policy. Following a review, exemptions may be granted if a student plans to commute from the home of a parent/guardian or close relative who lives within 40 miles of the Manhattan campus or if the student will live in other approved organized student housing, including fraternity/sorority housing, Smith Scholarship House, Wesley House and Alpha of Clovia House. United Way Director Nichole Mader has announced that there will not be a salsa competition at the Geary County Free Fair next Monday as originally planned. There were not going to be enough participants. The event was slated to be a fundraiser for United Way.

Public revue activities concluded at the 4-H Center Thursday evening with the naming of both Kacey Butler and Jada Nabus as Geary County Free Fair 4-H Queens for this year.&nbsp;

Butler said she had wanted to be the queen since she was 7 years old. "To me it means promoting 4-H to get it out there so that more kids come and I can help more kids, teach them what 4-H means to me so that they can learn all the life skills. " Nabus has looked up to the queens who preceded her in past years, "with all their tiara's on at Fair, and just to be a role model for all the younger 4-H'ers. The Royal Court included Mikayla Dibben.

During the public revue 4-H members also showed the clothes that they had either made or purchased.

In Sewing Construction Case Proietti was the Junior Division Grand Champion, Eliot Oentrich Intermediate Grand Champion and Paige Roeser Senior Division grand champion.

For Constructed Fashion Revue the Junior Division Grand Champion was Eloise Ryan, Intermediate Division Grand Champion Jacob Roeser and Paige Roeser was named Senior Division Grand Champion.

In Boy's Buymanship Grady Oentrich received the Intermediate Division Grand Champion honor while Logan Nabus was the Senior Division Grand Champion.

For Girl's Buymanship Macey Goodyear received Junior Division Grand Champion honors, Gracie Erichsen Intermediate Division top honors and Macie Muto was named the Senior Division Grand Champion.

Two 4-H Queens are named for the 2021 Geary County Free Fair

K-State Bands hosted their annual Leadership and Auxiliary Camp from July 11–14. According to K-State Today almost 80 high school drum majors, section leaders, percussionists and color guard members were on campus to learn drum major conducting, leadership skills, percussion techniques and guard techniques. The students represented 36-high schools from Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.

Students participated in several activities that helped strengthen their leadership skills, teamwork development, work ethic, communication, conflict resolution and fostering a thriving and positive culture. The camp was process-driven with the goal that each student would come away with the knowledge and confidence necessary to become stronger leaders within their own band programs.

The camp concluded with a performance on July 14 in All Faiths Chapel. It was open to all students currently in grades 9-12.

Back after more than a year's hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic the 45th Smoky Hill River Festival is scheduled for Sept. 2-5 in Salina's Oakdale Park.

"Festival entertainment comes from the finest in the region, nation, and beyond. A wide variety of musical styles are represented, along with exciting headliner and roving performances ranging from the familiar to the unconventional. Festival-goers can find new favorites at four stages, with a special venue dedicated to hands-on entertainment plus Arty’s Stage for kids and families," according to information from festival organizers.

Admission to the river festival is by weekend wristband ($15 in advance or $20 at the gate) available in 21 cities statewide starting July 26, or by daily wristband ($10 and sold only at the gate). Children ages 11 and under will be admitted at no charge. Join the Game Show Party’s 'live studio audience' for the excitement of knowledge, skill, and chance. Learn to hula with Martika Daniels or hang out with the Hip-Hop Wagon and join the creation of freestyle hip-hop, drumming, and dancing," festival organizers noted.

More than 130 artists from 19 states will participate in the festival's Fine Arts &amp; Craft Show, including 56 artists who are new to the festival.

Organizers also will commemorate the work of longtime festival art show volunteer Marie Chapman, who passed away in June 2018. The first Marie Chapman Award, a $700 cash prize, will be presented during the art show awards at the west side information tent at 2:45 p.m. Sept. 4.

Additionally, children ages 5 to 14 will once again have the opportunity to participate in the selection of the Kids Choice Award, given to the festival artist who receives the most votes by Sept. 4.

The art patron program returns as well with a variety of perks for those who purchase a $100 ticket, including the following.

• A private Fine Art &amp; Craft Show preview reception on Friday morning including a full hour of special shopping access

• An invitation to the exclusive Thursday night premiere cocktail party, during which artists and patrons mingle and connect.

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—A Kansas man died just before 9a.m. Thursday in Pottawatomie County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Ford Escape driven by Owen Richard Uhrmacher, 22, Shawnee, was southbound on Kansas 13 Highway one half mile east of 8020 Highway 13.

The Ford hydroplaned and crossed the center lane. A 2015 Nissan NV 2500 cargo van driven by&nbsp;Kirby, Jarrod Dell Kirby, 39, Westmorland, struck the Ford.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;Uhrmache,r who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the KHP. Kirby was not injured.&nbsp;

POTTAWATOMIE CO., Kan. (WIBW) - A fatality crash has closed K-13 in Pottawatomie Co.

The Kansas Department of Transportation says in a tweet that K-13 has temporarily closed from K-13/K-24 to north of K-13/K-16 due to a two-car crash that has caused at least one person’s death.

According to KDOT, heavy water is also affecting traffic on K-18. It urged drivers to be cautious with Thursday’s rain.

According to the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce, the Business After Hours event scheduled for tonight at Champions Car Wash has been postponed due to inclement weather.&nbsp;

The event will now be held on Tuesday, July 27th at Champions Car Wash at 1720 Old US 40 in Junction City.&nbsp;

There is a group working to attract a Veterans Home to Geary County. Chamber President Mickey Fornaro-Dean said it appears the governor is working to get funding approved for a new Veterans Home for the northeast quadrant of the state. "We're putting together a committee. We do know what they're modeling it after we have an idea of how many beds, what kind of square footage size.

Fornaro-Dean said a committee will be formed to begin meeting on this topic and go after the project. "They have not issued a formal RFP yet so we're going to try and get ahead of that and get as much information as we can."

The topic of Geary County arose during discussion at a recent town hall meeting.
