Groundbreaking for a new building for the Geary County Food Pantry occurred on Saturday.

Hutton Construction will oversee the project, which will provide more space for the Food Pantry. The new facility will be located at&nbsp;700 West 7th St. in Junction City.&nbsp;

Junction City Parks and Recreation Director Joshua Gray has announced that the Fort Riley Trail has been re-opened for use. The trail may now be accessed from Trooper Drive. Troop Access control point remains closed. 

Gray also issued a thank you to the Chamber of Commerce, Military Affairs Council, Fort Riley, and the city's Parks staff for working to restore access to the trail from Junction City. He also thanked the Public Works department for loaning&nbsp; their equipment to clean up the trail.

On Saturday at 6:21 p.m The Geary County Sheriff's Department said-Deputies responded to US 77-Highway at mile marker 149 in reference to a single vehicle non-injury accident. Ryan De Oliveira of Manhattan was traveling northbound on US 77-Highway in his 2011 Chevrolet Camaro when he lost control and spun out into the west ditch. No injuries were reported and the vehicle was removed by A Homestead Wrecker Service.

On Monday at 1:11 a.m. Deputies responded to I-70 mile marker 301 for a lapsed single vehicle non-injury accident. Jeffrey Sender Sr. of Junction City, KS was traveling westbound in a 2001 Ford Ranger when he did an evasive maneuver to avoid rear ending a semi-truck and trailer. Sender lost control of his vehicle and left the right side of the roadway, rolling several times before coming to rest on the roof of the vehicle. No injuries reported, the vehicle was removed by TLC Wrecker Service.

Central National Bank is hosting a fundraiser on Wednesday, Sept. 25, for United Way of Junction City/Geary County. The potato bar fundraiser will be from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in the basement of the bank on 8th and Washington in Junction City. You can also get the meal to go. 

The meal will be $8 and include a potato with toppings, such as chili, nacho cheese, shredded cheese, and more. 

The potatoes were donated by Tyme Out Steakhouse and all the proceeds will go to United Way of Junction City/Geary County.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating alleged retail theft in Manhattan.

Just after 4:30p.m. Saturday, police&nbsp;filed a report of theft in the 100 block of Bluemont Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Walmart reported a known suspect stole $1,430.14 worth of merchandise from the store.

The "Paint the Town Blue" parade in downtown Junction City on Saturday kicked off homecoming week for the Junction City Blue Jays. The event, sponsored by Junction City Main Street, also included a spirit rally.

The Main Street Market, sidewalk sales and food trucks were also part of the activities.

Junction City Main Street is hosting its annual "Paint the Town Blue" community parade and spirit rally this Saturday. This event is the official kickoff to the Junction City Blue Jays' homecoming week.

The event will be in downtown Junction City, with a parade at 10:00 a.m. and a spirit rally to follow. Parade-goers and attendees can also participate in the Main Street Market, sidewalk sales, and food trucks that will be in attendance.&nbsp;

Paint the Town Blue

On Friday, September 20th the Junction City Police Department arrested a second juvenile in connection with the ongoing investigation into social media threats involving USD 475 schools. The JCPD said as with the previous case, the juvenile was arrested, transported to the police department for processing, and later released to their parents. 

The juvenile was charged with Aggravated Criminal Threat, a Level 5-person felony. Due to the age of the juvenile, no further details regarding their identity will be released.

Based on the findings of this investigation, JCPD continues to believe there was no intent of violence toward any of the schools' students or staff. At this time, they do not anticipate any additional arrests related to this case. However, the investigation remains ongoing.

On Saturday, September 21 at about 5:10 AM, Pottawatomie County Sheriff Dispatch received notification from Union Pacific Railroad THAT a train struck a pedestrian on the tracks located on the south side of 4th Street in Wamego.

First responders from law enforcement, fire, and medical responded to find a 23-year-old man injured but alive, underneath a train car. He was extricated and was transported by EMS to a Topeka hospital.

Preliminary investigation indicates the man was lying in a prone position between the rails, about 1000 feet east of Ash Street and was struck by something as the train passed over him.

Wamego Police are investigating the incident.&nbsp;

Authorities confirm one man was injured after being struck by a train

TOPEKA, Kan. – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.3% in August. This is an increase from 3.2% in July and an increase from 2.6% in August 2023, according to a media release.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment was unchanged from July. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 3,500 over the month, while government increased by 3,500.

The unemployment rate in Geary County is down from 5.4 to 5.3 percent in August.&nbsp; Dickinson County saw their jobless rate increase from 4.3 to 6 percent in August. The rate is down in Riley County&nbsp;from 4.2 percent in July to 3.8 percent in August.&nbsp; The rate in Wabaunsee county dropped from 4.1 to 3.2 percent.&nbsp;

Jobless rate down in Geary County, up in Dickinson County

It’s a busy time for farmers in Kansas with fall harvest underway. The Kansas Highway Patrol would like to remind motorists to use more caution and patience when traveling around farm trucks, tractors, combines, and other implements.

“As the busy farming season is underway, each traveler in Kansas needs to be more aware of increased farm implement and truck traffic,” said Captain Candice Breshears. “In Kansas, we have many trucks exiting and entering the roadways at any given time. Traveling around these vehicles requires extra caution.”

Most farm equipment is not designed to travel at highway speeds and may only travel 15-25 mph. Farm equipment is often wider than the lane of traffic, so extra room should be allowed when sharing the road. Caution should be practiced on all roads, but especially on busy rural roads with unmarked intersections.

Don’t assume the farmer knows you’re there.

Although most farmers regularly check for vehicles behind them, the majority of their focus must be spent looking ahead to stay on the road and watch for oncoming traffic. Implements are very loud, hindering their ability to hear your vehicle.

Don’t pass unless you can see clearly ahead of both your vehicle and the equipment you are passing. If there are curves or hills blocking your view, wait until you can clearly visualize the area you are passing in. You should not pass in a designated “No Passing Zone,” even if you are stuck behind a farm vehicle. Do not pass if you are within 100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing, bridge, elevated structure, or tunnel.

When a farm vehicle pulls to the right side of the road, it does not mean it is turning right or allowing you to pass.

Due to the size of some farm equipment, the farmer must execute wide left turns, so allow it plenty of room and time to turn and remain aware of any potential driveway or field they may be turning into.

Don’t assume that a farmer can move aside to let you pass. Shoulders may be soft, wet, or steep, which can cause the farm vehicle to tip, or the shoulder may not support the weight of a heavy farm vehicle. KHP: Extra caution needed on Kansas roads during harvest

The Junction City Blue Jays fall to 1-2 on the season after losing 43-30 on Friday night to Wichita Northwest High School. It was a back-and-forth game that saw two extended weather delays.

Before the first weather delay, Junction City led 14-0 after a 22-yard interception return for a touchdown by defensive back Jeremiah Howard. Following the PAT, officials called a weather delay due to lighting in the area.  This delay was for approximately one hour and 15 minutes. 

Before the second delay, the Blue Jays led 21-12 following a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Conrad Gomez to wide receiver Scholar Brown. Once again, officials made the teams return to the locker room due to severe weather and lighting in the area. This weather delay also lasted well over an hour. 

Once play resumed, Wichita Northwest utilized the quarterback run game and ultimately wore Junction City down in the second half. The Blue Jays had four turnovers on the night and then turned the ball over on downs two times. Junction City had a late 47-yard touchdown run by Lance Norris to end the game with a final score of 43-30. 

 Junction City has lost back-to-back games to top 6A opponents, and the Blue Jays fall to 1-2 on the season.  

Next up for Junction City is homecoming week, and the homecoming game next Friday will be at Blue Jay Stadium against Manhattan.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a registered Kansas offender on new allegations after an arrest.&nbsp;

Just before 3:30p.m. Thursday, police arrested 41-year-old Marcus Grant of Ogden on a Riley County District Court warrant for failure to appear.

 &nbsp;The original charge in this matter is for violation of the offender registration act.&nbsp; Grant has been listed in Kansas as a registered offender since 2013 after conviction in Saline County for aggravated robbery. He was later convicted in&nbsp; Geary County for aggravated battery in 2023, according to the KBI offender registry.

Grant is being held on a $50,000 bond, according to the RCPD.

The Geary USD 475 Board of Education has approved the Guaranteed Maximum Price for the planned new Early Childhood Center at $30,150,000. An agreement has been entered into with Hutton Construction.

The facility will include 32 classrooms. It will be located on the site of the former Junction City High School.

Chapman police said this past Monday they received reports of numerous vehicle burglaries where valuables were taken during the overnight hours. A vehicle was also reported stole that night.

One tool used in the investigation was a new license plate reader system that the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office placed within the city limits. With the use of that system the vehicle was seen entering Junction City but never left. A short time later it was located by Junction City police.

Chapman police say they feel the crimes were committed by anyone local. They are trying to clear up rumors that may be circulating on social media. The investigation is ongoing. With the help of the JCPD, Riley County Police Department, Topeka Police Department and the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office they are following up on all leads in the case.

Week three of the high school football season has arrived, and the Junction City Blue Jays are headed back to Wichita. On Friday night, the Blue Jays will take on Wichita Northwest High School.

The Blue Jays are coming off a 69-56 loss to Lawrence, which put their record to 1-1 on the season.

For Wichita Northwest, the Grizzlies are coming off a 14-0 win over Wichita East and are 2-0.

The matchup will feature a high-powered Junction City offense, which scored 55 points in week one and 56 in week two. The Blue Jay offense will go against a stout Grizzly defense that has only allowed 14 points all season and most recently held Wichita East scoreless.

Konza Prairie Community Health Center has completed a remodeling project at their Junction City clinic on Grant Ave. CEO Danielle Hallgren said the upgrades were to their medical check-in space, the pharmacy, added a couple of acute care rooms, replaced flooring in the clinic and centralized the Konza Closet to make a home for their food bank location&nbsp; and clothing donations for patients and community members.

Since 2023 Konza has provided 13, 000 pounds of food to about 850 patients. Those numbers are expected to increase.

The ribbon cutting was hosted at the Chamber of Commerce Business During Hours event on Thursday.

Following the recent law enforcement investigation into alleged social media threats against Junction City Middle School and listing of student and staff names from USD 475, a juvenile was arrested by the JCPD on a recommended charge of Aggravated Criminal Threat and released to their parents.&nbsp;Assistant Junction City Police Chief Cory Odell noted that the first incident was not unique to USD 475 while the second round of alleged threats was specific to USD 475.

Thursday representatives from the JCPD, Geary County Sheriff's Department and Fort Riley Police Department met with the USD 475 Board of Education.&nbsp;

Possible options identified for moving forward included implementing use of clear book bags for the 2025-26 school year to advancing metal detection practices. Those could help with detection and deterrence. Education that could teach that actions have consequences and repercussions also received discussion.

Goals mentioned included fostering open dialogue with the community.

Sheriff Eric Coffman pointed to the need to get as much information as possible to those in need.

On accountability actions BOE President Kristy Haden suggested additional training for students and parents, and why not implement the clear bag step sooner, possibly at the end of the semester. She feels the Board should talk abut that subject.

There was discussion only on the board meeting agenda Thursday evening.

Paint the Town Blue is this Saturday in Junction City

WASHINGTON, D.C. –&nbsp;The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced Thursday that it will waive day use fees normally charged at boat launch ramps and swimming beaches at its recreation areas nationwide in recognition of National Public Lands Day (NPLD) on Saturday, Sept. 28.

The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities such as group picnic shelters. Other agencies and partners that manage recreation areas located on USACE lands are encouraged, but not required, to comply with this waiver of day use fees in the areas they manage.

Volunteers who participate in one of USACE’s NPLD in-person activities will be issued a fee-free coupon if the volunteer site is participating in the coupon program. Volunteers should check with their local USACE project for more information. The fee-free coupon is valid for one year from the date of issuance and may be used for one day of entrance or day use fees at any participating federal agency’s park, forest or recreation area that charges either of these types of fees.

Stephanie Waterman, USD 475’s Principal and Coordinator of the Early Childhood Program, was the guest speaker at the September 18 meeting of the JC Breakfast Optimist Club, which was held in Jim Clark’s Chevrolet showroom.

Mrs. Waterman has worked in USD 475 since 2002 when she began as a Kindergarten teacher. This is now my “dream job”, she said. Stephanie and her staff work with between 700 and 800 children ages 3 through 5 years to prepare them for Kindergarten. Classrooms for the young learners are in Junction City and on Fort Riley, which include provisions for special needs students and students who are English Language Learners.

There is one class at Junction City High School, which is used as a Pre-K Lab. High school students work under the supervision of a certified teacher to also prepare the “Little Jays” for kindergarten. “The students are taught by Kansas Department of Education Certified Teachers. It is great to have this partnership with the JCHS. Our kiddos get learn how to get along with others, develop their fine motor skills, and develop an interest in learning. They even have opportunities to visit the band and orchestra rooms to see and hear a live performance on a cello (other instruments) or a group.”

A facility to house all of the Early Childhood Program in one building has been a goal and will soon be reached. Research, visits to other Early Childhood Centers in Kansas, design and development in preparation for a new Early Childhood Center has been taking place to create a building to house over 32 classrooms. Groundbreaking for the new facility will be held October 11 with a completion date for the 2026 school year.
