--Junction City Commissioners have approved a commitment of $17,500 for 2025 plus $6,000 in-kind services of water and trash for the Fresh Start Emergency Shelter now.

The funds will be targeted to help with a future grant that will be sought by Fresh Start to help provide transitional housing to rapid rehousing for homeless people.&nbsp;

Right now Fresh Start operates as a day program but if received the grant would allow the shelter to be open at night.

--Commissioners adopted the 2025 City budget. There will not be a property tax increase. The mill levy will remain at 47.115 mills.

--The governing body approved a memorandum of understanding between the Junction City and Fort Riley Fire Departments. The MOU will allow mutual aid.

--Commissioners approved a&nbsp;Junction City Fire Department request to go out to bid for the purchase of a new fire&nbsp; engine.

--They approved Change&nbsp;Order #2 for the 2024 Water System Improvements in the amount of $151,046.50. This involves water line work on 5th Street.

--A special events permit was approved for the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce All Treats Day for October 24th, 2024.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY—Three drivers and students on a school bus avoided injury in an accident just after 3:30p.m. Wednesday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Freightliner semi driven by&nbsp; Scott Alan Sheely, 61, Clyde, was westbound on U.S. 77 just west of Crooked Creek Road.

The semi rear-ended a 2012 Buick Regal driven by Merlin Benson&nbsp;Chestnut, 69, Clay Center, who braked suddenly when he noticed the red stop sign activated on a school bus stopped on the south shoulder to let kids out at a home.&nbsp;

 After impact the Buick struck the bus driven by Robert Deemie, 69, of Manhattan, with 26-students on board.&nbsp; There were no injuries reported.&nbsp; All three drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

&nbsp;Abilene, Kan. –The Abilene Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau has been awarded a $9,800 Kansas Tourism Marketing Grant to support the Kansas Gunsmoke Trail 2.0 initiative.The Kansas Gunsmoke Trail highlights cowboy-themed attractions in four historic cities—Wichita, Abilene, Hays (City), and Dodge City—that played significant roles in the storyline of Gunsmoke, the longest-running Western in television history. 

The new phase of the project will build on its success through targeted advertising and digital campaigns, continuing the interactive passport program, and engaging visitors to follow the trail. "I'm so proud of our collaboration,"&nbsp;said Julie Roller Weeks, Director of the Abilene Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau. "This project spans multiple towns and regions and is already attracting visitors, bus tours, and travel writers."

The project, building on the success of the initial campaign, will officially launch in 2025, with a focus on attracting international visitors attending the 2026 World Cup in Kansas City.

There will be a&nbsp;Double Victory with Honors for the 1st Infantry Division Deputy Commanding Officer – Maneuver and Chief of Staff Friday at the 1st Infantry Division HQ Victory Hall, Building 580, Fort Riley. It will begin at&nbsp; 2 p.m. 

Maj. Gen. Monte Rone,&nbsp; Commanding General of the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley, will host a Double Victory with Honors, as the division welcomes both the Deputy Commanding Officer of Maneuver, Col. Matthew Hardman, and the Chief of Staff, Col. Travis Habhab.

A Victory with Honors is a chance to honor incoming and outgoing leaders. It is a ceremony to both welcome new leaders and their families to the team, as well as thank outgoing leaders for their service to the unit, the community and the Army.

Col. Hardman is coming from Fort Johnson, where he served as the Joint Readiness Training Center Operations Group Commander. He will serve as the 1st Infantry Division Deputy Commanding Officer of Maneuver.

Col. Habhab previously served in the Pentagon as the Executive Officer for the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army. He has served as the 1st Infantry Division Chief of Staff since arriving in July

Geary USD 475 uses STOPit, an online and app-based system, to empower students, parents, teachers and others to anonymously report anything of concern to school officials. That can range from bullying, cyberbullying, harassment to other harmful or inappropriate conduct.

The Board will also receive information on a guaranteed maximum price for the new early childhood center, an update on the former Junction City High School property and discuss potential community vision work group meeting dates.

School Safety Update is on the Board of Education agenda

St. Francis Xavier School is pleased to announce that senior, Miguel Weber, has been named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Miguel has attended St. Xavier for 4 years and has been active in scholars bowl, chess club, yearbook, forensics, Future Business Leaders of America, Student Council, and the National Honor Society. When asked to comment, Miguel stated “It’s an honor to be named a semifinalist. I feel as if more doors have opened for me.”

Representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, Miguel has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement throughout high school and has earn exceptional SAT® or ACT® scores to attain the semifinalist distinction. “Miguel is a very good student who has consistently scored at the top of his class despite taking a challenging course load.” remarked Alex Becker, St. Xavier math teacher, scholar’s bowl coach, chess coach, and past National Merit Scholarship recipient who introduced Miguel to the National Merit Scholarship Program.

The next step requires semifinalists to submit a detailed scholarship application, essay, and earn SAT® or ACT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. Miguel plans to move forward with the process and will find out in February if he advances to the finalist level.

RILEY COUNTY —An arson suspect who skipped a court appearance is in jail.

Just after 9:30p.m. Tuesday, police arrested 39-year-old Mahboooba Babrakzai, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Babrakzai was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for failure to appear. The original charge in this matter is for aggravated arson stemming from a report filed in July of 2022. Total bond was set at $100,000.&nbsp;

T-Mobile&nbsp;announces Junction City as one of its latest 25 Hometown Grant recipients.&nbsp;The $50,000 grant will go&nbsp;toward beautifying&nbsp;three alleyways in downtown Junction City, adding art, outdoor furniture, safety barricades and lighting&nbsp;to provide new opportunities for social interaction and play in&nbsp;the community. The project was submitted by Junction City Main Street.&nbsp;

Through Hometown Grants, people in communities nationwide are kickstarting projects&nbsp;that make a real difference and help&nbsp;their&nbsp;towns&nbsp;thrive. Junction City High School senior Gracie Erichsen has been named Student of the month at JCHS by the Junction City Breakfast Optimist Club. Erichsen&nbsp; is the daughter of Luke and Joanna Erichsen.&nbsp; She is in the Science Engineering and Health (SEH) Academy. During her studies Gracie has been involved in the Family, Career, Community Leaders of America organization (FCCLA), Blue Jay Nation, Class Committees, National Honor Society, Student to Student (S2S), basketball, softball, track, volleyball, and tennis. She is also an Academic Letter recipient and is a founding member of the JCHS Junior Optimist International (JOI) Club, which is being organized at the school this year.

Gracie’s nomination read: “She exemplifies every characteristic that we as teachers hope for our students to possess when they graduate. She is very successful in whatever she does. Academics and athletics are balanced well in her life, and she strives to do her best regardless of obstacles and never makes excuses.

She has brought so much pride and publicity to our community through both her athletic abilities and academics. Gracie has appeared in the Junior Home Run Derby twice and competed nationally as a club team member in indoor volleyball and sand volleyball nationals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She placed in shotput and discus at state her sophomore and junior years.

Academically she is a member of the FCCLA Lifeskills team who placed nationally this past spring. Gracie is a member of the National Honor Society and serves as a member of the JCHS Student Council. She will graduate this school year from Junction City High School with numerous certifications, her associates degree and CNA.”

Gracie received a certificate from the JC Breakfast Optimist Club and a $25.00 gift certificate from JC’s BBQ and Grill for being the Student of the Month for September.

Heather Hagedorn, Museum Executive Director, said that the work will be covered under the Heritage Trust Fund grant if awarded to GCHS. 

All bids must be sealed and must be delivered by the bidder to the Geary County Historical Society at 530 N Adams, Junction City KS on or before 4pm on October 29th, 2024. The bidder must ensure employees/applicants for employment are not discriminated against because of race, color, religion, sex or national origin.&nbsp; The Geary County Historical Society reserves the right to reject any and/or to waive any informality in the bidding. Bids received late or incomplete will not be considered.

Fort Riley’s Fall Apple Day Festival returns Saturday, October 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival, which is free and open to the public, is the largest annual event at Fort Riley and serves as the military installation’s open house.&nbsp;

Community members can get an up-close look at military vehicles, watch demonstrations by Explosive Ordnance Disposal Soldiers, the Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard, and military working dogs, and enjoy musical performances and kid-friendly activities. Food and beverages will be available for purchase and the Friends of the Fort Riley Museums will have Libbie Custer’s famous apple pie by the slice for sale.

New attractions this year include a mechanical bull ride and Zumba on the schedule for entertainment. Returning attractions from years past include the carriage rides provided by the CGMCG mule team, and all three types of aircraft used by the 1st&nbsp;Combat Aviation Brigade.

Visitors can park at Riley’s Community Center, 446 Seitz Ave., just off Huebner Road. Signs will direct visitors to the nearby festival grounds at Artillery Parade Field. No pets or outside alcohol are allowed at the festival.&nbsp;&nbsp;

MANHATTAN —A Kansas State University student in Manhattan informed the university of testing positive for tuberculosis on Friday, according to a statement from the university.

The student was undergoing medical treatment and isolating per Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

Tuberculosis, or TB, is a disease caused by a bacterial infection. Not everyone infected with the most common TB-causing bacterium,&nbsp;Mycobacterium tuberculosis, becomes sick and shows symptoms. Only those with active TB disease can transmit the bacteria, which is spread through the air and generally only transmitted to people through prolonged close contact. Casual contact is usually insufficient to transmit the bacteria, and TB cannot be transmitted by contact with skin, clothes, toilets, or other surfaces that an infectious person may contact.

K-State is working closely with the Riley County Health Department to help identify any individuals with prolonged contact who should be tested out of precaution. The health department will contact any identified individuals who may need to be tested with instructions on next steps.

University community members are encouraged to visit the Lafene Health Center website to view a list of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/lafene/requirements/tuberculosis/faq/">frequently asked questions about TB,</a>&nbsp;which includes information about symptoms and testing. Additionally, more information can be found on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/tb/index.html">Centers for Disease Control's tuberculosis website</a>.

K-State student in isolation with reported case of tuberculosis 

Junction City police have announced that on Wednesday, September 11th, 2024, the JCPD was informed of threats made on TikTok against Junction City Middle School. The threats were part of a trend that targeted schools across the state. After an investigation by School Resource Officers and USD 475 officials, the threat was determined to be unfounded.

On Friday, September 13th, officers were alerted to additional social media activity, which included a list of names of students and staff from USD 475 posted on Snapchat. After a thorough investigation conducted by detectives through the weekend and into this week, on Tuesday, September 17th, 2024, the Junction City Police Department identified a juvenile believed to be responsible for the post. The juvenile was contacted by JCPD detectives, arrested, and transported to the police department. After processing, the juvenile was charged with Aggravated Criminal Threat, a Level 5-person felony, and was later released to their parents.

The investigation remains ongoing, with detectives planning additional interviews in the coming days and weeks. Due to the age of the individuals involved and the active nature of the investigation, no names or further information will be released at this time.

Based on the findings thus far, JCPD does not believe there was ever a credible threat of physical violence at any of the community’s schools. However, they take all such cases very seriously and will continue to pursue criminal charges whenever applicable. They extended their sincere thanks to the community for their vigilance in promptly reporting the concerning posts. Your awareness and swift actions play a crucial role in helping us maintain the safety of the schools.

The fifth annual Greater Geary Community Match Day provided a combined $544, 363 for 57 nonprofit organizations in the community. In addition to individual donations matching funds are provided by local foundations. Match Day this year will be Oct. 15 at the Municipal Auditorium from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.&nbsp; There will be $162,000 in matching money.

Donations can be made at the Municipal Auditorium on Oct. 15 or by mail.

During a gathering at the C.L. Hoover Opera House on Monday organizations benefitting from Match Day provided details on their operation. 

The Geary County Food Pantry has received funding from Match Day plus other sources. They plan to break ground this Saturday on a new 38,400 square foot Pantry facility at 7th &amp; Clay.&nbsp;

Sheila Markley with the Opera House touched on the importance of promoting their activities, the recent opening of their new education building and their expanding programs.

The Junction City Breakfast Optimist Club works to provide funding to 16 different youth organizations. Referring to Match Day, Dr. Ferrell Miller, Club Secretary,&nbsp; said, "Every little bit helps." He added it's about teaching kids to give back. The Club also funds three annual scholarships

Support for Match day and other local projects comes from the Hoover-Koken Foundation, R2B4 Bramlage Family Foundation and Central Charities Foundation.

The Greater Geary Community Foundation received a $70,000 grant last year that was used to also award mini-grants to 17 local nonprofit organizations. Officials hope to do it again this year.

The Greater Geary Community Foundation is an affiliate of the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation.

Junction City Public Works crews say that crews will be working on connecting water lines at Garfield and 4th Street on Tuesday, September 17th. Areas affected may include Garfield Dr between Garfield Cir and 4th Street, and 4th Street from Sunset west to Garfield. 

Service is anticipated to be shut down from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM and service will be restored once repairs are complete. Please call Junction City Public Works at 785-238-7142 with any questions.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a registered sex offender on new allegations.

Just after 3:30p.m. Saturday, police arrested 23-year-old Jamichael Strahan of Junction City on a Riley County District Court warrant for probation violation, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The original charge in this matter is for aggravated indecent solicitation of a child. 

His bond was set at $25,000. Strahan was out of custody early Monday, according to the RCPD. He has been registered as a sex offender since September of 2022 following convictions in Manhattan for&nbsp;Aggravated indecent solicitation of a child; Sex act with a child &lt;14 in 2020 and 2022, according to the KBI Offender registry.

Attendance will be counted. There will continue to have a police presence at all of&nbsp; the USD 475 schools in the coming days and look forward to seeing everyone back in the&nbsp; buildings on Tuesday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Geary USD 475 provides safety update

The Geary County Food Pantry is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony for their new building this Saturday, Sept. 21, at 9:30 a.m. at 700 West 7th St. in Junction City. (This is the corner of 7th and Clay Streets).

Board Members of the Food Pantry and representatives from Hutton Construction will attend to help break the ground for the new facility.

The concert will feature a diverse program, including two beloved works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and the Flute Quartet in D major, featuring soloist Lillian Oeding.&nbsp; Additionally, the program will showcase "The Melting Pot" by Alyssa Morris, K-state associate professor of oboe, performed by a woodwind quintet.

&nbsp;Throughout their season, the Salina Symphony presents six mainstage concerts alongside chamber concerts, educational programs, and a patriotic outdoor concert.

MANHATTAN —&nbsp;Foghat&nbsp;and Starship featuring Mickey Thomas are both set to take the stage at Kansas State University's McCain Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20. Both bands will appear separately on the same evening for a double helping of '70s and '80s rock.

Foghat plays with an energy. Their music has been featured in the video game "Guitar Hero III" and the movies "Dazed &amp; Confused" and "Top Gun: Maverick."

Mickey Thomas' soaring voice propelled Starship through the decade of the '80s, and his soulful and compelling vocals established him as one of rock music's most recognizable stars. Initially a continuation of Jefferson Starship, the group was renamed Starship in 1985 and went on to record three No. 1 hit songs, including "We Built This City," "Sara" and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now." Their hit "It's Not Over 'Til It's Over" became Major League Baseball's theme in 1987.

Legendary rock bands will perform at McCain Auditorium

Geary Community Schools Foundation has announced that Anson Jacobsen is the 3rd recipient of this loan program, established to bring more diversity to the classroom. Jacobsen is a 2021 Junction City High School (JCHS) graduate pursuing a degree in elementary education.  He is attending Doane University in Doane, IA.   He is the son of Aaron and Deborah Jacobsen of Junction City. 

In high school, Jacobsen was a student-athlete, lettering in marching band, football, and swim team, while maintaining a GPA of 3.5.  He was named to the Honor Roll and graduated Cum Laude. In his application, Jacobsen stated that the lack of male representation in elementary education, not only in Junction City but nationally, is glaring. “When I finish my education at Doane University, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather teach than Junction City. I want to be part of something great, and I can't think of anything more important than the continuing education and development of our young men and women.”

The Foundation's forgivable loan award recipients must have reached college sophomore status or higher in an accredited teacher preparation program. After completing the first year in the loan program, the recipient may apply for two additional annual awards for a total forgivable loan of up to $15,000, depending on their year of college. After graduation, if the individual is hired and teaches in USD 475 for one year, 25% of the loan will be forgiven; for two years, 35% of the loan will be forgiven; and for three years, the remainder of the loan is forgiven.
