The Geary County Sheriff's Department reported that Deputies responded to I-70 mile marker 306 eastbound for a report of a rolling domestic in a passenger car. Deputies were able to locate the vehicle on I-70 at mile marker 318. 

After an investigation Nina Kravtsova of Centerton, Arkansas was arrested on requested charges of Domestic Battery, Aggravated Assault (Domestic), Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, and Interference with LEO. Kravtsova was later arrested on a requested charge of Battery on a Corrections Officer.

Authorities make arrest on I-70

<a></a><a>A new addition has been built at the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo arena in Abilene, Kansas.</a>

Elevated seating, called the Lumber House Loft, has been constructed above the roping chutes at the north end of the arena.

Standing twelve feet high, the structure measures 20 feet wide by 75 feet long.

They have been made into five “boxes,” or suites, each 15x16 feet, in which fifteen people can sit to watch the rodeo.

They will be sold for seating, said DeLynn Farson, committee treasurer.

Matt Engle of Lumber House, Inc., has provided the labor, equipment and materials for building the boxes.

They are fully covered, he said, and are made of steel with metal end walls and roof.

Partition walls made of six-foot cedar pickets allow the air to flow between the boxes but give some privacy.

The face of the boxes has a three-foot cedar picket fence overlooking the arena.

They’re the best place to sit in the grandstand, Engle thinks.

“It’s the best view in the entire house,” he said. “It’s the only spot in the entire stadium that will be one hundred percent shaded all day long, with good air flow.”

He also noted that fans in the boxes can look down and see what’s happening with the ropers, steer wrestlers and barrel racers.

“You’re right over the top,” Engle said. “You get to see the barrel racers fly underneath you, and you get to see people’s faces as they come back. I think it’s going to be a neat experience, and a comfortable one, too.”

Engle, owner of the Lumber House True Value, has been a loyal rodeo sponsor since the early 2000s.

He was a PRCA bareback rider and bull rider for several years in the late 1990s and loved the sport.

Now he gives back to the sport he enjoyed so much.

“I love rodeo, and I love everything about it,” he said. “I wanted to be able to invest in something in my community that would have a lasting impression.

“We all give in different ways, and this was something I wanted to give to.”

Nick Weibert was a big part of the labor, Engle said, amongst other people.

The Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo kicks off&nbsp;July 30&nbsp;and runs&nbsp;through August 2, with nightly shows&nbsp;at 7:30 pm.

The rodeo is held in conjunction with the Central Kansas Free Fair.

Choose different varieties to prevent common problem, says K-State expert

K-State horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini says the common problem of tomatoes cracking can be solved by scheduling watering or choosing different varieties.

Home gardeners face the problem of tomato cracking, or hard cracks on the upper part of the fruit, usually spanning from or around the stem.

While the cracks do not necessarily ruin the tomato, they are unsightly, said Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini.

“Tomatoes have a root system that is very dense and fibrous, and is quite efficient in picking up water,” she said. “Unfortunately, the root system can become unbalanced with the top of the plant.”

Domenghini said cracking early in the season is likely related to the top growth of the tomato, which can then result in blossom-end rot when the weather turns hot and dry. Later in the season, cracking may be caused by a sudden abundance of water after a long dry spell.

How can cracking be prevented? Domenghini suggests consistent watering and mulching. Scheduled watering will prevent a quick influx of water likely to cause cracking. Additionally, mulching will help moderate moisture levels in the soil.

Some gardeners may be already following these recommendations and doing everything right, and still end up with tomato cracking. Faculty in K-State’s Department of Horticulture evaluated different tomato varieties over several years to try and come up with the most crack-resistant tomato.

“The difference seems to be the pliability of the skin rather than thickness; the more pliable the skin, the more resistance to cracking,” Domenghini said. “The old variety Jet Star has been the most crack-resistant of any we have tested, including the newer types.”

Unfortunately, Domenghini noted, Jet Star is a variety that can put out rampant, uncontrolled growth. Of the newer, more attractive varieties, Domenghini said the Mountain Spring, Mountain Pride, Mountain Fresh, Floralina, and Sun Leaper varieties had good resistance to cracking.

KSRE answers the question — is tomato cracking  preventable?

Clinic closures in the wake of the Dobbs decision and questions about the legality of emergency contraceptives, including disinformation that some are abortion drugs, may have contributed to a sharp drop in the rate of prescriptions for contraceptives in states with the most restrictive abortion bans, according to a&nbsp;<a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2820370?utm_source=For_The_Media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_term=062624" target="_blank">University of California Los Angeles study</a>.

The decline was significant in most states with restrictive bans following Dobbs in June 2022 that returned regulation of abortion procedures to the states, the study found. The group of researchers, led by pharmacy professor Dima Qato, used data from national prescription audit databases to estimate the monthly volume of prescriptions dispensed at pharmacies nationwide and state-by-state. It represents estimates from more than 93% of retail pharmacies.

“Given that abortion would be restricted in many states even more after Dobbs, I wondered whether now more people would get covered through contraception to prevent pregnancy and the need for an abortion,” Qato said.

Over the past six months, especially in states with near-total abortion bans, lawmakers have&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/right-birth-control-bill-stalls-louisiana-legislature-over-anti-abortion-concerns" target="_blank">discussed proposals</a>&nbsp;that would protect access to contraception, but those efforts have largely failed because of concern over whether that would include emergency contraception. Some anti-abortion organizations call Plan B, which is an emergency contraceptive designed to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex, an abortion drug because it can prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg.

The researchers think those conversations have led to confusion among residents who aren’t sure if emergency contraceptives are still legal in their state. That confusion could also extend to pharmacists. While Plan B is available over the counter at many retail stores and pharmacies, including Amazon, it can also be obtained by prescription, which is the only data point the study captured. According to the research, the rate of obtaining it through prescription between 2021 and 2023 dropped more than 70% in four states with near-total bans — Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana and Tennessee. It declined by about 60% in Missouri.

The increases peaked in July 2022 and then dropped to levels lower than the pre-Dobbs period, Qato said.

“For patients that are seeking emergency contraception but can’t get it prescribed or filled, that’s where it matters,” Qato said. “They want to take it, they know it’s an option, and now they’re faced with hesitant prescribers and pharmacies.”

Half of women surveyed in ban states are unsure if Plan B is legal

A&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kff.org/womens-health-policy/poll-finding/kff-health-tracking-poll-early-2023/" target="_blank">Kaiser Family Foundation poll</a>&nbsp;released in early 2023 found that more than 30% of adults surveyed were unsure if Plan B was legal in all 50 states and over the counter — and half of women living in states with abortion bans were under the impression that emergency contraceptives were illegal or were unsure if they were legal.

Conversely, in two states with near-total bans, Idaho and South Dakota, the rate of prescriptions for emergency contraceptives increased by 148% and 182%, respectively. Those numbers were attributed to increases in ulipristal, which is also known as Ella, rather than levonorgestrel, known as Plan B. Ella can be effective at preventing pregnancy up to five days after unprotected sex, while Plan B is most effective within three days and is also less effective in people who weigh more than 165 pounds, while Ella does not have that limitation.

Between the 12 states with the most restrictive bans, the combined decline of emergency contraceptive prescriptions was 60%, and the decline for oral contraceptives was 24%.

Qato said she expected to see lower rates of emergency contraceptive use in the most restrictive states, particularly with the conversations likening them to abortion drugs, but she wasn’t expecting to also see a drop in monthly oral contraceptive prescriptions. Among states with the most restrictive bans, the largest decrease of 28% was in Texas, while most other states had decreases of about 20%, including Kentucky, Louisiana, Alabama and Tennessee.

Qato also theorized that the closure of abortion clinics in those states with bans contributed to the decreases, since most clinics that provided abortions prior to Dobbs also offered prescriptions for oral and emergency contraceptives, IUDs and other family planning services such as screenings for sexually transmitted diseases. The study found no change in the use of IUDs and other forms of contraception such as the patch or vaginal ring.

Over-the-counter options only help certain people

In her research, Qato noted that two years after Iowa imposed Medicaid coverage restrictions on family planning clinics that provided abortions, the use of contraceptives declined by two-thirds.

While Plan B and Opill — an oral contraceptive — are available over the counter, Qato said those options are still untenable for some people who need contraceptives the most, including low-income women and women of color.

“Opill is convenient for those who don’t want to go to the doctor and have that discretionary income to purchase it, but low-income women relied on clinics that are now closed. They relied on prescriptions that they now don’t have,” Qato said. “Those options are accessible, but not affordable to women who could really benefit from it.”

While Qato said there should be a focus on restoring and protecting access to abortion, there should also be efforts to protect contraception in the most restrictive states. She is alarmed to see initial increases after Dobbs and then such steep declines.

“It suggests that we may observe increases in live births from unintended pregnancies in women who were forced to have a child that wasn’t planned because the state didn’t protect or introduced fear of criminalization or liability for patients, doctors, or pharmacists,” she said. “A woman may not feel safe choosing emergency contraception in those states anymore.”

She is alarmed to see initial increases after Dobbs and then such steep declines.“It suggests that we may observe increases in live births from unintended pregnancies in women who were forced to have a child that wasn’t planned because the state didn’t protect or introduced fear of criminalization or liability for patients, doctors, or pharmacists,” she said. “A woman may not feel safe choosing emergency contraception in those states anymore.”

&nbsp; Geary County Public Works crew is planning to start their chip sealing operations on Tuesday, July 16th, 2024. The Geary County Schools USD 475 Board of Education approved the hiring of Kimbre Smice as Fort Riley Elementary principal on Friday morning. Smice will take over for longtime principal Kenny Upham who was recently named academy principal of the Business, Public Service and Hospitality (BPSH) Academy at Junction City High School. 

She&nbsp; has been an assistant principal at Ware Elementary since 2022. While at Ware, Smice has held several prominent leadership roles, including being the school’s SIT coordinator as well as the buildings state testing coordinator and 504 coordinator. During her tenure in the district, Smice has worked at Fort Riley Middle School, Seitz Elementary, Fort Riley Elementary and Ware Elementary. 

Smice graduated from Illinois State University in Normal, Ill., in 2011. She later received her master’s degree from Kansas State University in 2019.

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 4p.m. Thursday in Riley County.

According to the Riley County Police Department reported, a vehicle driven by 18-year-old Sarah Ingalls was involved in a rollover crash&nbsp;in the 17600 block of Barton Road in Leonardville 

EMS transported Ingalls to Via Christi for treatment of non life-threatening injuries. The RCPD did not report where Ingalls is from or if she was wearing a seat belt.

Walmart has just wrapped up a fundraising effort for the Children's Miracle Network for the Stormont Vail Health Flint Hills Campus in Junction City. The goal is to help youth in the Junction City area.

According to Steven Mendoza Jr., Front End Coach at the Walmart Supercenter, the effort raised $11,635. "We're just real excited." The fundraiser generated over $1,000 more than in 2023 to help the community.

Mendoza noted one customer service representative, Deb Soldano raised a little over $6,000 of the total through cotton candy sales. The fundraiser ran June 7 through July 7.

A common problem many homeowners face is wasps taking up residence outside their homes. Kansas State University entomologist Raymond Cloyd says, however, that not all wasps are harmful.

“Wasps are beneficial and they are part of the ecosystem,” Cloyd said. “They are predators of many caterpillar pests and are docile overall. They will usually only sting if disturbed or agitated.”

Mud daubers and paper wasps are commonly seen around homes and will generally not attack people. However, yellow jackets will actually attack people.

Despite the beneficial role of wasps, many people may want to remove wasp nests to avoid the possibility of getting stung when outdoors. When considering removing wasp nests, Cloyd advises determining whether the nest is new or mature.

“If the home has a history of wasps building nests, such as in late spring or early summer, physically remove the nest when you see the nest being initially built,” Cloyd said.

New nests can be removed with minimal risk of being stung because there are usually fewer wasps present inside the new nest. Wasps generally do not rebuild nests in the same location, so physically removing the nest will avoid having to deal with nests in the future.

Spraying nests with an insecticide should be done at night when the wasps are inside the nest, Cloyd said.

If the nest is large, mature, and has been around for some time, Cloyd recommends contacting a pest management professional.

“In order to avoid getting stung, it is best to contact a pest management professional,” he said.

Cloyd said that it is important to correctly identify the wasp that is creating the nest. He recommends contacting your&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/about/statewide-locations.html">local K-State Research and Extension office</a>&nbsp;and either describing the insect over the phone or sending pictures via email.

MARSHALL COUNTY —&nbsp;KBI agents and deputies from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office have located remains during the search for a missing Blue Rapids man. 

Just after 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, deputies found human remains in rural Marshall County, according to a media release from the KBI.

The KBI Crime Scene Response Team responded to the area, which was northwest of Waterville, Kansas, near Sunflower Road and 2nd Road. 

 The remains are believed to be those of 36-year-old Camoran M. Shoptese. 

Agents found evidence indicating that Shoptese was murdered. Investigators do not believed a threat to the community exists related to this case.&nbsp;On Saturday, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office requested KBI assistance in the disappearance of Shoptese who was last seen around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday at 709 Chestnut Street in Blue Rapids.

Junction City Main Street will host a farewell for Phyllis Fitzgerald, the outgoing Executive Director of the Society of the 1st Infantry Division, this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Main Street Market at 901 Washington.&nbsp; She is moving to Collinwood, Tennessee to be nearer family. Fitzgerald plans to leave the job with the Society of the 1st Infantry Division in mid-August.

The Geary County Sheriff's Department reported that Deputies responded at 5:04 p.m. Wednesday to I-70 Eastbound Mile Marker 303 exit ramp for a two-vehicle injury accident.

Deputies respond to accidents

Junction City Main Street reminds the public of a Longhorn Cattle Drive planned downtown Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. Cattle will be herded from the JC Livestock Sale Barn across the East Sixth Street bridge to 6th Street and then north on Washington to 10th Street.

The event is being hosted by Junction City Main Street. Prior to the cattle drive there will be the unveiling of the tenth JC Statue.

There will be participation by the Fort Riley Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard and the Central Plains Rodeo Association rodeo queen.&nbsp;

The Longhorn Cattle are being brought from Oklahoma for the event.

Junction City Cattle Drive is set for Saturday

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kansas4-h.org/">Kansas 4-H Youth Development program</a>&nbsp;has recognized more than two dozen youth as state project award winners.

Sarah Maass, state leader for the Kansas 4-H program, said “being a state project winner indicates prior excellence and points to (youth’s) future potential.”

“Youth must display leadership skills and hearts for service by organizing events like community service projects, project meetings to share their expertise with younger 4-H members, and other unique efforts,” Maass said.

One state winner is selected yearly from the senior division (ages 14-18) in 27 project categories. Kansas 4-H youth submit a project report form, a summary of their work in a certain project.

Maass notes that in addition to learning new project skills, these youth must also demonstrate growth and strength in leadership, organization, civic engagement, and communication within the project.

Kansas 4-H names state project award winners

Beginning today, July 10, northbound/westbound and southbound/eastbound K-18/K-177 traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction and will travel on the outside lanes while the medians are reconstructed.

Turning restrictions will still be in place at the McDowell Creek Road intersection. All other side streets will now allow left turns.

This configuration is expected to be in place until early August.

Permanent pavement marking will then be done in the project’s final phase. Individual lane closures will occur as needed. Traffic control will be in place to alert and direct motorists. Project completion is expected by the end of August, conditions permitting.

On July 10 Michelle Sink, Area Director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters, told the JC Breakfast Optimist Club members about Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Michelle stated that her “area covers the counties of Riley, Pottawatomie, Geary and some identified cities outside of those counties. Big Brothers/Big Sisters is a one-to-one mentor program in which caring adults work with youth who face adversity in their lives. Support, attending school events, spending time with and showing up for kids is important. Youth ages 5-18 are matched with an adult through a process.

To protect both the mentors (Big Brothers/Big Sisters) and the Littles (the youth) there is a process. That process for the adult includes a background check; five references who are contacted for information about the adult applicant; a matching process by a Support Specialist; a determination about the benefits of Big Brothers/Big Sisters or is there another program which would be more suitable; an intake visit with the Little and their family; an opportunity for the Big to consider three possible options for their Little and a Match Meeting, where the Big and Little meet for the first time.

Guidance is provided to the Big Brother or Sister once the match is made to assist with topics which are important to developing the relationship and the growth of the youth. Resources are also shared with the family to help them with their needs.

WASHINGTON D.C. — Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann spoke Wednesday on the House floor about the southern border crisis.

"Since President Biden was sworn in, his open border policies have created a national security and humanitarian crisis," Mann said. "House Republicans continue to urge the White House and our Democrat colleagues in Congress to work with us to identify a solution. Again and again, we are met with silence. I understand border security may not be politically convenient for my colleagues on the other side of the aisle, but at some point, they must stop pretending that this crisis doesn’t exist."

Mann pushed back against spin coming out of the White House on the situation.
