The C.L. Hoover Opera House invites music lovers to an&nbsp;evening of chamber music on Friday, September 27th, at 7:30 pm. The concert will feature a diverse program, including two beloved works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and the Flute Quartet in D major, featuring soloist Lillian Oeding.&nbsp; Additionally, the program will showcase "The Melting Pot" by Alyssa Morris, K-state associate professor of oboe, performed by a woodwind quintet.

Legendary rock bands will perform at McCain Auditorium

Geary Community Schools Foundation has announced that Anson Jacobsen is the 3rd recipient of this loan program, established to bring more diversity to the classroom. Jacobsen is a 2021 Junction City High School (JCHS) graduate pursuing a degree in elementary education.  He is attending Doane University in Doane, IA.   He is the son of Aaron and Deborah Jacobsen of Junction City. 

In high school, Jacobsen was a student-athlete, lettering in marching band, football, and swim team, while maintaining a GPA of 3.5.  He was named to the Honor Roll and graduated Cum Laude. In his application, Jacobsen stated that the lack of male representation in elementary education, not only in Junction City but nationally, is glaring. “When I finish my education at Doane University, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather teach than Junction City. I want to be part of something great, and I can't think of anything more important than the continuing education and development of our young men and women.”

The Foundation's forgivable loan award recipients must have reached college sophomore status or higher in an accredited teacher preparation program. After completing the first year in the loan program, the recipient may apply for two additional annual awards for a total forgivable loan of up to $15,000, depending on their year of college. After graduation, if the individual is hired and teaches in USD 475 for one year, 25% of the loan will be forgiven; for two years, 35% of the loan will be forgiven; and for three years, the remainder of the loan is forgiven.

The Geary County Sheriff's Department reports that Deputies responded to I-70 mile marker 310 in the eastern part of the county for the report of a single vehicle accident in the median. Adolfo Vazquez of Fort Riley, KS was traveling westbound on I-70 when he fell asleep behind the wheel of his 2009 Subaru Outback Sport and went off the road. Adolfo’s vehicle struck a ditch causing a roll-over accident. 

Vazquez sustained unknown severity injures and was transported to the Irwin Army Community Hospital for further treatment.

RILEY COUNTY—A Manhattan man was injured in an accident just before 1:30p.m. Sunday in Manhattan.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2018 Hyundai driven by Cody Copeland, 23, Manhattan, failed to yield right of way at the intersection of Pillsbury Drive and McDowell Creek Road. 

The vehicle struck a 2006 Yamana motorcycle driven by Corey Kirkwood, 38, Manhattan. 

EMS transported Kirkwood to Via Christi for treatment of his injuries. &nbsp;Copeland was issued a citation. The RCPD released no additional details.

GEARY COUNTY —A Kansas man accused in connection with a fatal crash in March that killed a police officer&nbsp; on his way home from work.

In August, 19-year-old Gage Kaiser was charged with involuntary manslaughter while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and aggravated battery, according to the&nbsp;the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office. .

The accident occurred just before 3:30a.m. March 16, when a passenger vehicle driven by 26-year-old Scott Hollingsworth was southbound on U.S. 81 at 119th Street, according to Sumner County Sheriff's Lt. Mike Friday. A westbound pickup struck the vehicle driven by Hollingsworth.&nbsp;

Hollingsworth was pronounced dead at the scene.&nbsp; EMS transported three passengers in the pickup to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The pickup driver later identified as Kaiser was not injured.

Clearwater PD said Hollingsworth had served the department for a year.

On Sept. 10, Geary County deputies arrested Kaiser. He&nbsp;remains in the Geary County Detention Facility on a $200,000 bond.

Chamber of Commerce candidate forums are scheduled

&nbsp;Geary USD 475 says that school district,&nbsp; the Junction City Police Department and the Geary County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a post made on Snapchat on Friday morning that featured the names of students and staff from Junction City Middle School.

As of Friday, Sept. 13, the Junction City Police Department began working with Snapchat to try and identify the account holder where the list originated from.&nbsp;Due to the nature of this snap and as a precautionary measure, there will be an increased officer presence at Junction City Middle School, Fort Riley Middle School and Junction City High School over the coming days

&nbsp;Geary USD 475 says that school district,&nbsp; the Junction City Police Department and the Geary County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a post made on Snapchat on Friday morning that featured the names of students and staff from Junction City Middle School. As of Friday, Sept. 13, the Junction City Police Department began working with Snapchat to try and identify the account holder where the list originated from.&nbsp;Due to the nature of this snap and as a precautionary measure, there will be an increased officer presence at Junction City Middle School, Fort Riley Middle School and Junction City High School over the coming daysThe Junction City Police Department, Geary County Sheriff’s Office, Fort Riley Police Department and USD 475 are fully committed to the safety and well-being of all students and staff within the community.

WASHINGTON, D.C.&nbsp;-&nbsp;U.S. Senators Jerry Moran, R-KS, and Roger Marshall, R-KS and First District Congressman Tracey Mann, R-KS, introduced legislation to prevent the federal government from using taxpayer dollars to seize private property to be used for a proposed National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor (NIETC).

The&nbsp;U.S.&nbsp;Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced a NIETC proposal to consider transmission line across&nbsp;major segments of&nbsp;Kansas, including <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/099d982a-98ff-4352-8a78-a592e5b71d28">Pawnee, Barton, and Russell counties</a>.

Through the implementation of the Biden-Harris Administration’s&nbsp;Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act,&nbsp;the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) would have&nbsp;increased&nbsp;authority to site electric transmission lines&nbsp;on lands designated a NIETC – even when state regulators have denied an application.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I am vehemently opposed to any effort by the federal government to seize private land,”&nbsp;said Mann.&nbsp;“The Department of Energy’s phase 2 announcement of the NIETC proposal was grossly under publicized, overly vague, and left landowners with no clarity regarding whether their lands would be impacted. 

"We have heard Kansans loud and clear—they are not interested in the federal government grabbing their land. We introduced this legislation to protect the rights of Kansas landowners and prevent the federal government from treading on their liberties. Any land given to the federal government for this project should be voluntary, not mandated, and&nbsp;I&nbsp;will never stop fighting to defend that right.”

“Kansans have made it clear to the federal government that their land is not for sale,”&nbsp;said Moran.&nbsp;

“The NIETC proposal has been problematic from the start&nbsp;since&nbsp;the DOE permitted&nbsp;only&nbsp;45 days for folks to submit their comments regarding the proposed transmission line," Moran said. "Sen. Marshall, Congressman Mann and I introduced legislation, the passage of which would prohibit the Department of Energy from trampling on the rights of Kansas landowners or usurping the authority of state regulators in order to build a transmission line across Kansas. These decisions should be left up to Kansans,&nbsp;not Washington.”

“Bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. should not have the unchecked authority to approve projects that could strip Kansans of their property rights,”&nbsp;said Marshall.&nbsp;“It’s as simple as this: decisions affecting local lands should always rest with the states.”

“Kansas Farm Bureau appreciates the leadership of Sens. Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall and Rep. Tracey Mann in introducing legislation to level the playing field and encourage good faith negotiations for the siting and building of electric transmission lines,”&nbsp;said Joe Newland, president of Kansas Farm Bureau.

&nbsp;“Additionally, this bill recognizes the important voice state regulators have in the process. While our policy supports reliable, low-cost electricity, and increasing transmission capacity to keep pace with growing demand, without vital protections included in this legislation, landowners will continue to face unilateral ultimatums from transmission developers who are using taxpayer dollars to build infrastructure," Newland said.

The North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging (NC-FH AAA) has announced the two keynote speakers anchoring its Sunflower Fair —the heartland’s premier health and wellness event. The event happens from 8 am to 4 pm on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.

Cost is $25 and that includes a sit-down banquet lunch.

The one-day event features expert speakers and 13 seminars on topics geared for older Kansans, people living with disabilities and caregivers, exhibits and live music.

She participated on National Geographic’s expedition team’s exploration of Ikaria, Greece, one of five “blue zone” locations in the world where people are known to live longer, healthier lives. Georgiou will share observations from her time in Greece and provide practical advice about how what she learned can be incorporated into Kansan’s lifestyles.

Roxie Yonkey, an author of “Secret Kansas: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful” and Obscure and “100 Things to Do in Kansas Before You Die” will be the Sunflower Fair’s closing speaker. Yonkey, who is known as Chief Exploration Officer for her “Roxie on the Road” blog and website, has written about Kansas for more than three decades, and her many awards include the 2022 Huck Boyd National Institute for Rural Development’s Kansas Creative Arts Leader of the Year.

“The Sunflower Fair provides trustworthy information and a fun time for anyone who wants to celebrate many more birthdays,” Julie Govert Walter, NC-FH AAA’s Executive Director said. “There is no event like it,” she said.&nbsp;

Exhibitors will provide health screenings, COVID-19 and flu vaccines, hearing tests, blood pressure checks, Medicare information and important health checks.

🎤Forward Ever: KDOT I-70 bridge demolition

TOPEKA, KAN. – A federal jury convicted a Kansas man of assault with a deadly weapon following an incident on a United States Army installation, according to the United State's Attorney.

In November 2023, Jordan Thompson, 24, assaulted an adult male victim while at Fort Riley.

According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Thompson was involved in a domestic dispute with his estranged wife. He used a 9 mm caliber pistol to threaten the victim who was at the home of the child’s mother, and then left with the minor. The incident prompted officials to issue an Amber Alert.

Thompson is scheduled to be sentenced on December 12, and faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The Department of Army Criminal Investigation Division, Fort Riley Department of the Army

Civilian Police, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Kansas Highway

Patrol, and the Butler County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case.

Konza Prairie Community Health Center will celebrate a major remodel of their Junction City clinic – located at 361 Grant Ave – with a Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce “Business During Hours” networking event and ribbon cutting on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024. Lunch will be catered by JC’s BBQ &amp; Grill.

Renovations started in January 2024 and include updates to the main entrance and pharmacy, additional treatment and office space, a modernized medical check-in desk, and updated flooring throughout the clinic.

“Local need for affordable community-based healthcare services continues to grow,” said Konza Chief Executive Officer Danielle Hallgren. “As we continue to see increases in the number of patients accessing care at our Junction City location, our commitment to quality remains a top priority. These updates will enable us to expand essential access to integrated health services in high-quality facilities.”

The largest aspect of the remodel created a new home for the Konza Closet and Konza Cupboard Food Pantry, programs created by the clinic where dedicated staff reach beyond healthcare to provide direct, on-site support that fills critical gaps for patients in immediate need of essentials.

“Konza provides more than great healthcare,” said Hallgren. “We have been fortunate to recruit and retain a team of mission-minded providers and staff who understand that healthcare is more than what happens in the exam room or operatory. Connecting patients with social determinants of health resources is an essential part of our role as a community health center. From fresh fruits and vegetables to hygiene products, clothing, and medical supplies, the new space gives us dedicated room to just take care of people, none of which would be possible without the generosity of patients and community members and the dedication of staff.”&nbsp;

Construction for the renovation was made possible through a grant from American Rescue Plan Capital funding, supporting improvements to expand health care infrastructure at HRSA-funded health centers. Supplies for the Konza Closet and Konza Cupboard Food Pantry are supported through donations to Konza Cares: Gifts of non-perishable food and personal hygiene items are always accepted during clinic business hours and monetary gifts made on October 15 during Geary Community Match Day will be eligible for a 50% match.

Established in 1995, Konza Prairie Community Health Center is a locally owned not-for-profit clinic which provides affordable, quality, comprehensive medical, dental, and behavioral healthcare for all. Geary County is identified as a Medically Underserved Area for Primary Care according to US Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) data. The HRSA GeoCare Navigator identifies there are more than 76,489 low-income residents in Konza’s Service Area, including Geary and Riley Counties; nearly 12,000 are uninsured and not currently served by a health center.

It was a battle on Thursday night at Blue Jay Stadium, as Lawrence defeated Junction City 69-56.  The high-scoring game featured a back-and-forth first half that was tied 28-28 at halftime. 

The Blue Jays took an early 35-28 lead in the second half on a scoop-and-score touchdown by junior Lovell Autry, his second defensive score of the game. 

Following the scoop-and-score, Lawrence found a spark on offense and also returned an interception for a touchdown. The Lions held a 63-35 lead in the fourth quarter, where the Blue Jays then stormed back to make it 63-56. The final play of the game saw Lawrence quarterback Banks Bowen escape down the sideline and score a touchdown to make the final score 69-56. 

Some key plays on the night for Junction City included a pick-six by Lovell Autry, the scoop and score also by Autry, along with a 66-yard touchdown connection between quarterback Conrad Gomez and wide receiver Jamarcus Vornes. Gomez also connected with senior wide receiver Xander Caldwell for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

With the loss, Junction City falls to 1-1 on the season. Next up for the Blue Jays is Wichita Northwest High School next Friday night, in Wichita.

Planning is under way for the annual Freedom Fest Fourth of July celebration in Junction City in both 2025 and 2026.

Spokesman Nate Butler said they're planning for a big event in 2026 with the hope of keeping Fort Riley families here and also engaging the rest of Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 2026, they will be commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States of America.&nbsp;

According to a release from the CVB to make this anniversary a truly unforgettable experience, there is a search for volunteers to help form and serve on planning committees.&nbsp;

There will be committees formed&nbsp;to oversee various aspects of the celebration, and could include:
