Karin Kathleen Ward (Burdick), of Abilene, age 79, passed away peacefully Sunday, November 1, 2020 with her family, at home, in Abilene, Kansas.

Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at the St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Abilene with Father Don Zimmerman as Celebrant. A parish rosary lead by Daughters of Isabella (D of I) will be Monday evening at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church at 6:30 p.m. The family will be receiving visitor’s from 5:00-6:15 p.m. and after the rosary until 7:30 p.m. Monday evening at St. Andrew’s Parish Hall. Karin's final resting place will be at the Mt. St. Joseph Cemetery. She was born May 29, 1941 in Kansas City, Missouri the daughter of Henry A. and Delores F. (Lavery) Burdick. Karin grew up in Wichita, Kansas graduating from the all-girls catholic school at Kapaun-Mt. Carmel High School in 1960. On July 16, 1960 she married Wayne Robert Ward at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Wichita. Karin and Wayne were blessed to spend the first 15 years of their marriage before their first of two children were born. In 1969 they moved to Abilene and in 1976 God gave them their first blessing, Julia Ann Ward and their second, Lucille Ellen Ward 1978. Karin greatest love was taking care of her home, family and selflessly volunteering to many, many organizations including: Neighbor to Neighbor, St. Andrews Church and School (the annual Ham Loaf dinner and the annual Catholic Church Auction), Catholic Religious Education and CYO, Adoration, Board of the American Red Cross, SCARC-Bingo in Salina, Special Olympics in Salina, was President of Altar Society, and volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the Head of Heart Fun Drive. She also managed the Webster Apartments her and Wayne owned in the 1960’s in Junction City, Kansas, was a swimming instructor in Abilene and taught special needs children to swim, the director of the Heart Fund in Abilene, a member of the Daughters of Isabella (D of I), served on a team for Cursillo, worked on the their family greyhound farm, attend the March for Life 6 times, helped sponsor St. Therese’s radio 106.5, she was her sister’s Barbie and Mary’s night companion during their time of need. Karin loved spending time with her family and friends, playing bridge, swimming, cooking, gardening, knitting and crocheting, reading, camping, boating, Greyhound Races, traveling, and meeting new people (I don’t know that she knew a stranger)! She is survived by her daughters Julia Ward-Veal and her husband Mitchell, and Lucille "Luci" of Abilene, grandchildren Alexandra Veal, Zachary Veal, Shyann Scoville-Ward, Clayton Veal, Jonathan Veal, two great grandchildren Brody Veal and Tycen Veal. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Wayne on April 8, 2007, sisters Gretchen McDonough, Mary Morgan, Barbara Sperry, and her brother (Tony) Henry Anthony Burdick, III. Gertrude's life began on May 16, 1921 in Oil Hill, KS.  She was the daughter of Martin J. and Lula (Cullins) Waner.  She was united in marriage to Robert A Mahoney in Grand Island, NE in May of 1958.  Gertrude was a registered nurse, trained at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.  She worked for several doctors' offices in Nebraska and as a school nurse, camp nurse and private care nursing in her home.  Gertrude was an incredibly faithful Catholic.  She was a parishioner at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newton.  She was a member of the Legion of Mary and prayed the Rosary many times a day.  Gertrude enjoyed visiting the nursing homes and praying with the residents in Newton.

  Her loving family includes her niece Lea (Larry) Schwart of Marion and many dear friends.  Gertrude passed away on October 26, 2020 at the Newton Medical Center.  She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert and many dear relatives.

  Her family will gather with friends on Friday, November 6 from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Newton.&nbsp; Her Rosary service will be held at 10 a.m. at the church, followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. led by Father Max Biltz.  Gertrude will be laid to rest in Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Florence.

Gertrude Joan (Waner) Mahoney - May 16, 1921-October 26, 2020 (age 99)

Virginia Lee Roberts, 77, of St. George, Kansas, died Monday, November 2, 2020, at her home following a lengthy illness. &nbsp;She was a long-time active member of the area.

Virginia was born January 11, 1943, in Wamego, Kansas, the daughter of Arvle “Beanie” and Mary (O’Neill) Howard. &nbsp;She attended local schools and graduated from St. George High School in 1961.

On September 10, 1961, Virginia married Larry D. Roberts. &nbsp;He survives at their home.

Virginia was a mother and homemaker until her children left for college, she then worked as the activities director at Presbyterian Manor in Salina and Wharton Manor in Manhattan. &nbsp;Virginia then became the manager for Good Samaritan Society Grandview Suites until her retirement.

Virginia was a very active and energetic person and in her late teens she played on a semi-professional basketball team and in her early twenties, a semi-professional baseball team. She was very involved with her children’s sports, 4-H, and other activities. She also helped with both her parent’s and in-law’s farms. Virginia always had one of the best gardens in the area and was known for her holiday decorations, especially Christmas.

Virginia was very artistic and creative. &nbsp;She crafted most of her own Christmas decorations, took art classes and was quite a good at painting pictures. &nbsp;Virginia acted as her own general contractor building her dream house on her childhood farm. &nbsp;She was local volunteer for many activities including being a Stephens Minister, a member of the board for the Community Care Ministry, and worked at the Methodists Women’s Thrift Shop.

Virginia was a member of the Wamego United Methodist Church and played in the church bell choir. She also helped in many other ways at both the Methodist Church in Wamego and St. George.

Virginia’s last few years were marred by a crippling degenerative neurological disorder, breast cancer, and bilateral knee replacements.

Virginia is also survived by her children, Audrey Roberts, Shane Roberts (Amy); her grandchildren, Bret Roberts, Trevor Ingrim, Katelin Ingrim, and Kile Cross; her great-granddaughter, Gracelyn Cross; and her sister, Mary Gardner. &nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Arvle Howard and her sister Darlene Biedenbender.

Per Virginia’s wishes, her body is bequeathed to KU Medical Center for education and research. &nbsp;Memorial services will be held at 2:30 pm, on Saturday, November 14, 2020 at Campanella-Evans Mortuary in Wamego. &nbsp;The family suggests memorial contributions to the Good Shepherd Home Care and Hospice, and those may be sent in care of the mortuary.&nbsp;&nbsp;

K-State mourns passing of esteemed agricultural economics professor Flinchbaugh’s career at the university spanned nearly a half-century MANHATTAN — Barry Flinchbaugh, whose remarkable career in agricultural policy at Kansas State University spanned nearly a half-century, died Nov. 2 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. He was 78 years old.

The charismatic Flinchbaugh was well known as one of the United States' leading experts on agricultural policy and agricultural economics. For more than four decades, he was a top adviser to politicians of both major political parties, including secretaries of agriculture, chairs of the U.S. House and Senate Agriculture committees, and numerous senators and state governors. Flinchbaugh was involved to some degree in every U.S. farm bill written since 1968, and served on many national boards, advisory groups and task forces, providing input on domestic food and agricultural policy. He served as the chairman of the Commission on 21st Century Production Agriculture, which was authorized in the 1996 Federal Activities Inventory Reform, or FAIR, Act, also known as the Freedom to Farm Act. "Barry Flinchbaugh will be deeply missed by many generations of the K-State family," said K-State President Richard Myers. "His expertise and vast contributions to the university, the state and agricultural economics will have a lasting impact on the world for years to come through those whom he taught and counseled. His experiences have touched the lives of many and his wonderfully feisty, thoughtful, helpful and kind personality will be his legacy forever."

Flinchbaugh grew up in York, Pennsylvania, and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Penn State University. He earned a doctoral degree in agricultural economics from Purdue University before joining the K-State faculty in 1971. At the time of his death, he was professor emeritus in K-State's Department of Agricultural Economics, teaching a 400-level course in agricultural policy each fall. He also served several years as chair of the Landon Lecture Patrons, who support the university's prestigious Landon Lecture Series. A dynamic speaker, it was reported that Flinchbaugh would receive as many as 100 speaking invitations per year. He authored more than 100 publications and co-authored a textbook on agricultural policy. Flinchbaugh's no-nonsense style was both loved and cursed; he was known to lay out the facts of an issue whether it was politically correct or not. In a biographical sketch detailing his speaking qualifications, a farmer in Colby once said about Flinchbaugh: "I do not agree with a damn thing you said, but the next time you are in town making a speech, I will be here." K-State honored Flinchbaugh with its prestigious Outstanding Teacher Award three times during his career. It is estimated that he taught agricultural policy to more than 4,000 undergraduate students. He connected the university to hundreds of thousands of people by giving presentations to farmers, agricultural business groups and more through its extension mission. "Our students, faculty and staff are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Dr. Barry Flinchbaugh, and our thoughts are with the Flinchbaugh family during this challenging time," said Ernie Minton, dean of the K-State College of Agriculture and director of K-State Research and Extension. "Barry was known as the absolute authority on agricultural policy for decades. Few faculty members have had the opportunity to impact so many students and at the same time affect national agricultural policy as Dr. Flinchbaugh. "We are going to miss his presence on campus, his expertise, his direct talk, his friendship and his affable personality and wit," Minton said. "We will never forget the mischievous smile underneath his white beard and the bump of his walking cane on the floor following the delivery of a good one-liner." Upon his retirement in 2004 as the state leader of agricultural economics, a news release from K-State Research and Extension quotes Flinchbaugh as saying he wants college students and experienced farmers alike to have fun while they're learning. "But I also want them to be uncomfortable… to think outside the box. Occasionally you'll make somebody mad. That's one of the risks. But they'll remember what you said." Flinchbaugh said one of his proudest professional moments came in 1971-1974 when he worked on a farm tax issue. During that time, he gave 300 presentations and visited all 105 counties in Kansas at least once. "Barry Flinchbaugh was a man who loved his family, students, university and country," said Mark Gardiner, Gardiner Angus Ranch, Ashland. "He cared about all people, from the president of the United States to young people trying to learn. We all were better educated after learning from Barry, yet we were better people from experiencing his zest for life." Flinchbaugh is survived in the family's Manhattan home by his wife, Cathy. Flinchbaugh’s family will conduct a private family burial and plans to host a public celebration of his life sometime after the pandemic. His death is a huge loss to me and all of his many friends, and it is hard to find the words to capture a man revered by so many. There may be no Kansan whose company I enjoyed more. “Each year I would make a surprise visit to his ag policy class at K-State. His trademark sarcasm, wit, and quips that made him a talented professor and a sought-after speaker was always on full display at the front of the classroom. I saw he loved and cared about his students and these feelings were mutual. "There is no doubt Dr. Flinchbaugh's presence in ag policy will be felt for generations to come through the thousands of students he taught and mentored during his decades-long career as a professor at K-State. His loss will be felt deeply within the ag community, and Robba and I will be praying for Dr. Flinchbaugh's family and loved ones during this time." At the time of his death, he was professor emeritus in K-State's Department of Agricultural Economics, teaching a 400-level course in agricultural policy each fall. He also served several years as chair of the Landon Lecture Patrons, who support the university's prestigious Landon Lecture Series. A dynamic speaker, it was reported that Flinchbaugh would receive as many as 100 speaking invitations per year. He authored more than 100 publications and co-authored a textbook on agricultural policy. Flinchbaugh's no-nonsense style was both loved and cursed; he was known to lay out the facts of an issue whether it was politically correct or not. In a biographical sketch detailing his speaking qualifications, a farmer in Colby once said about Flinchbaugh: "I do not agree with a damn thing you said, but the next time you are in town making a speech, I will be here." K-State honored Flinchbaugh with its prestigious Outstanding Teacher Award three times during his career. It is estimated that he taught agricultural policy to more than 4,000 undergraduate students. He connected the university to hundreds of thousands of people by giving presentations to farmers, agricultural business groups and more through its extension mission. "Our students, faculty and staff are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Dr. Barry Flinchbaugh, and our thoughts are with the Flinchbaugh family during this challenging time," said Ernie Minton, dean of the K-State College of Agriculture and director of K-State Research and Extension. "Barry was known as the absolute authority on agricultural policy for decades. Few faculty members have had the opportunity to impact so many students and at the same time affect national agricultural policy as Dr. Flinchbaugh. "We are going to miss his presence on campus, his expertise, his direct talk, his friendship and his affable personality and wit," Minton said. "We will never forget the mischievous smile underneath his white beard and the bump of his walking cane on the floor following the delivery of a good one-liner." Upon his retirement in 2004 as the state leader of agricultural economics, a news release from K-State Research and Extension quotes Flinchbaugh as saying he wants college students and experienced farmers alike to have fun while they're learning. "But I also want them to be uncomfortable… to think outside the box. Occasionally you'll make somebody mad. That's one of the risks. But they'll remember what you said." Flinchbaugh said one of his proudest professional moments came in 1971-1974 when he worked on a farm tax issue. During that time, he gave 300 presentations and visited all 105 counties in Kansas at least once. "Barry Flinchbaugh was a man who loved his family, students, university and country," said Mark Gardiner, Gardiner Angus Ranch, Ashland. "He cared about all people, from the president of the United States to young people trying to learn. We all were better educated after learning from Barry, yet we were better people from experiencing his zest for life." Flinchbaugh is survived in the family's Manhattan home by his wife, Cathy. Flinchbaugh’s family will conduct a private family burial and plans to host a public celebration of his life sometime after the pandemic. His trademark sarcasm, wit, and quips that made him a talented professor and a sought-after speaker was always on full display at the front of the classroom. I saw he loved and cared about his students and these feelings were mutual. He was born April 16, 1969.&nbsp; Tyler was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he attended high school.&nbsp; He loved mechanics and would work on anything that had a motor and drove.&nbsp; His true ability and all time favoite was Heavy Construction Equipment. Tyler spent many years working in the shops and as a road mechanic for several different companies in Lincoln.&nbsp; A change in his life brought different jobs, but he worked hard, always doing the best job he could.&nbsp; Tyler made friends easily and enjoyed helping people any way he could.&nbsp; In 2019 he decided to move to Clay Center, Kansas.&nbsp; Living on a farm outside of a small town was a big change, but he found he enjoyed helping with the cows and horses, fixing fence, and working on machinery that broke down.&nbsp; He went to work for Ray’s Apple Market, working in the meat department, and took a lot of pride in keeping everything clean, neat, and well stocked.&nbsp; He also worked part-time assembling various equipment and products at Tractor Supply. This gave him the opportunity to use his mechanical skills and be creative if something wasn’t quite as exact as he thought it needed to be during assembly.&nbsp; He liked fishing when he had some spare time, and also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends playing dice games and watching football on T.V.&nbsp; Tyler was always a die hard Nebraska fan, but would cheer for K-State and the Chiefs.

 He is survived by his mother Linda and step-father Roger Taylor of Clay Center, KS, daughter, Kelsey Mundall; grandson, Jayden and granddaughter, Justice of Lincoln, Nebraska; step-brothers, Brock (Jeana) Taylor and Tyler Taylor of Clay Center, KS as well as many extended family of step-aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Benjamin (Ben) Franklin Sours, 86, passed away Monday evening, October 26, 2020, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Ben was born March 3, 1934, to Alice Mae and David Clark Sours at their home outside Winchester, Va. He served in the US Army, trained as a medic, stationed in Germany at the signing of the Korean War ceasefire, and was discharged at Fort Riley, Kansas. He met the first love of his life, Patricia Ann Webster, of Cleburne, Ks., while driving a taxi in Manhattan. The two were married on February 8, 1959. They settled in Olsburg, Ks, in 1968. Pat succumbed to her decades-long battle with Muscular Dystrophy in 2003. Ben began working for Kansas State University Facilities in 1968, worked as a Custodial Supervisor, became a certified Arborist, and retired as an Equipment Operator II after 30 years in 1999 to care for his ailing wife. He was active in the Olsburg Lions Club, Olsburg Senior Citizens, and served as a Deacon at Calvary Baptist Church in Valley Falls. He never knew a stranger. A surviving widower, Ben married the second love of his life in 2006. Lucile Seay lost her first husband a few years earlier as well, and the two couples had been friends and attended church together for several years. Ben and Lucile were married and moved to Winchester, Ks. in 2007. Ben is survived by his wife Lucile, of the home, his son Kirk Sours and wife Denise of Linwood, grand-daughters Layci Jo Kuder (Bryan) of Colony, TX, and Erin Kathleen Sours of Topeka, grandson Jesse Taylor Sours (Rita) of Parkville, MO, Great-grandson Nathan Tyrel Kuder, and Great-granddaughter Eleanor Rose Sours. Libby Dawn Johnson, age 63, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, on October 31, 2020.&nbsp;

She was born December 2, 1956 to David and Margaret McLain Holt at Harrison, Arkansas. &nbsp;Libby married Donald Johnson on November 2, 1996 and resided in Dwight, KS until 2014. They moved to El Paso, TX for 4 years and currently in Manhattan.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in El Paso, TX. Libby had a heart for volunteer work. One of the favorites was being youth leader at Council Grove First Baptist Church for many years with husband, Donald. She was also a mentor for the CGHS Mentor Program.

Libby had a love for gardening and could grow most anything. She could bake the best apple pie as well many other delicious things including decorating cakes for special occasions. She was an avid collector of tea pots. Libby lived to take care of others always making sure everyone else came before herself.

Even though Libby had more than one serious medical condition she never complained. She would often push herself too hard because it needed to done or she wanted to do for others. She loved being a wife, mother and grandmother….the grandchildren were very special to her. Libby had a passion for church and to God.

Libby was preceded in death by her father.&nbsp; She is survived by her husband Don; mother Margaret Gray, Harrison, AR; daughters Heather Seymour (Mike), Council Grove, and Jessi Sprague (Jesse),Kingston Mo; sons Dustin Creager, Lead Hill, AR and Tyler Johnson (Shawna), Junction City; brother David Holt, Harrison, AR; 7 grandchildren: David and Hannah Seymour; Annallia Johnson; Jace, Logan, Avalyn, and Isabelle Sprague; and a host of friends.

Mildred Joan “Milly” Nelson, age 88 of Riley, passed away Friday, October 30, 2020 at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.



She was born on December 26, 1931 in Leonardville, the daughter of Walter R. and Ella V. (Larson) Peterson. She graduated from Leonardville Rural High School where she graduated at the top of her class. Following high school, she worked as a clerk for Charlson Wilson Abstract before becoming a full time farm wife. 

On June 9, 1951, she married Raymond Lee Nelson. He preceded her in death on March 27, 2020, after nearly 69 years of marriage.&nbsp; Milly was an ideal farm wife.  She took pride in doing anything on the farm, from daily chores, to driving tractors and checking pastures.  There wasn’t a wire gate she couldn’t open or a square bale she couldn’t throw.  Her devotion to the farm was rivaled only by her love for baking.  Her apple pie was second to none and her caramel brownies were known all over the county. Faith was very important to her and she was a member of the Walsburg Lutheran Church, serving in many ways including being a member of the L.C.W.  She enjoyed the camaraderie of her ladies Circle group and never missed an activity.  Milly also enjoyed gardening and would routinely take fresh flowers to the Leonardville Nursing Home for the residents to enjoy.  Sports were a big part of her life and she loved following her grandchildren and great grandchildren in their sporting events and activities.



She is survived by one son, Alan Nelson and wife Kimberly of Riley; three grandchildren, Mike Nelson and wife Becky of Leonardville, Jordy Nelson and wife Emily of Leonardville and Kelsey Nelson of Leonardville and seven great grandchildren, Izabel, Teske, Koy, Rhett, Royal, Brooks and Adda.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Jerry Ray Nelson in 1952 and Thomas Lee Nelson in 1954; two brothers, Warren Peterson and Lyle Peterson and one sister, Eileen Stone.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 on Thursday, November 5, at the Walsburg Lutheran Church with Rev. Keith Wiens officiating. Respect calls may be made from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Walsburg Cemetery. 

A memorial has been established for the Walsburg Lutheran Church. Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 on Thursday, November 5, at the Walsburg Lutheran Church with Rev. Keith Wiens officiating. Respect calls may be made from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Walsburg Cemetery.

Janice Elaine Jepsen, 79, of Wamego, KS passed away Friday, October 30, 2020 at Valley Vista Good Samaritan Society in Wamego.

Janice was born February 18, 1941 in Wamego, KS, the daughter of Charles L. and Eva (Gibson) Elder. She attended school in Wamego and graduated from Wamego High School.

Janice met David Jepsen in 1958 while he was stationed at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka and they were married on July 2, 1960 at Mt Calvary Lutheran Church in Wamego, KS. They were stationed many places during Dave’s career, including Guam, before moving to Sacramento, CA when Dave retired from the air force. They later moved back to Wamego, KS. She worked for Casual Corner clothing store for many years as a sales associate and received many rewards for top sales. She had a keen fashion sense in clothing and was a talented decorator. Janice always had a joke or story to tell and will always be remembered for her quick wit and dry sense of humor.

She is survived by her sister, Charlene Nelson (Ralph), Colorado, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Jepsen and siblings, Godfrey Elder, Damien Elder, Tom Elder, Herman Elder, Leona Kling, Evelyn Hughes, Betty Willard, Alma Lee Fechter, Verna Roberts and Martina Trudo.

Heaven claimed one of its angels on earth with the passing of Norma Faye (Hauschild) Padgett on October 12, 2020, when she succumbed to congestive heart failure in Dallas, Texas. Norma was nurtured by God’s Word and Sacrament all the days of her life and is now with the Lord Jesus forever; John 14:1-3.

Norma was born on March 25, 1936, the 5th of nine children of Walter and Mathilda Hauschild, in Dorchester, Illinois. She was baptized as an infant in St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dorchester. She grew up in Gillespie, Illinois and after high school graduation pursued her passion for helping others by earning her Bachelor’s of Nursing degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. She worked at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis upon graduation where she met her husband, Reverend Stanley Delton Padgett, who was attending Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. They married on July 5, 1957 and Norma was his co-partner in ministry for the full 64 years of their union together.

Norma spent her life helping others as a faithful servant of the Lord, nursing the sick. She did this on a Lutheran mission post in New Guinea, and as a nurse in several cities in Kansas, Missouri, and New Jersey. She spent the last 33 years of her career in Oklahoma, settling in Apache and working in Comanche County Memorial Hospital, Cyril Nursing Home, and the Lawton Indian Hospital. She retired from the Lawton Indian Hospital in 2005, ending her 50-year career in nursing as the Supervisor of Nurses. The impact she had on others in this half-decade of service in her chosen profession is immeasurable.

But Norma’s biggest contribution to the world was as a mother and grandmother. She always said her happiest moments in life were when she was cuddling babies, and God gave her many to love. She had eight children, ten grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. She was nanny for four of her grandchildren, providing full-time loving care and support after her retirement from nursing. Many people in Norma’s life – patients, parishioners, and family - said she was a saint of God. The Heavenly Father made her blessed her whole life, and now she enjoys God forever.

Norma is survived by her husband, Reverend Stanley Padgett, of the home; her children, Paul Padgett and wife Sherri of Apache, OK, John Padgett and wife Natalia of Austin, TX, Michael Padgett of Stillwater, OK, Martha Ross and husband Kimble of Trophy Club, TX, Elizabeth Herink and husband Dan of Houston, TX, and Rebekah Cooksey and husband Jim of Prosper, TX; her siblings and their families, Clarence Hauschild, Melva Reid, Marguerite Tilashalski, Raymond Hauschild, and Judy Douglass, 10 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Norma is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mathilda Hauschild, son Philip Padgett, daughter Rachel Padgett, brothers Carl and Earl Hauschild, and sister Dorothy Weaks.

She will be buried in Alma, KS with a memorial service on November 7, 2020 at 11:00 am at St. John Lutheran Church at 218 W 2nd St in Alma. The service will be streamed online via Facebook Live.

David was born on October 9, 1936 in Alma, KS to Matthew and Ruth (Berroth) Bohn.&nbsp; David attended Hinerville School north of Alma.&nbsp; In January of 1954, David, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served his country until January of 1962.&nbsp; In February of 1959, he was united in marriage with Carole Ann Sibert.&nbsp; After serving in the Marines, he stayed in California and worked as a cabinet maker.&nbsp; In 1971, he moved his family back to Alma and managed commercial properties in Topeka, KS until his retirement.&nbsp; After many years of marriage, David and Carole divorced.

David is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Charles Bohn, and a sister Jean Mick.

Donna Lee Lawson, longtime resident of Abilene passed away at Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan, KS on Thursday, October 29th, 2020. She was born November 4, 1930 in the Barnes Community, the daughter of Elsie A. (Wilkinson) and George M. Kappel. They moved to Clay Center in 1939, where she spent most of her early childhood years. In 1942 her family moved to Abilene. She attended local schools and graduated from Abilene High School with the class of 1946. On June 11, 1949 she married Samuel L. Lawson. All their married life was spent traveling and following his military career. After his death in 1978 she was employed by the Dickinson County Clerk’s Office, retiring after 27 years of service. She was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Abilene. They say a life filled with love is a life well lived. She lived quietly and loved beyond measure. What an example she has left for all those whose lives she touched. Rosemary Longland Burroughs born January 29, 1924, passed away on October 9, 2020, following a brief non-covid related illness.

 Rosemary was born in Chula Vista, California, the first child of Geoffrey and Grace Noakes who immigrated to California from England following WWI. She graduated from Taft High School and attended the University of California at Berkley, where she met and married Albert Burroughs who was completing his Ph.D. Upon their graduations, in 1946 the couple and newborn first son, Nathan moved to St. Paul, Minnesota where Al taught at the University of Minnesota and where second son Gregory was born. Subsequent duty in the United States Public Health Service required moves to California and Georgia. From 1953-1956 the family lived in College Station, Texas where Al attended Veterinary School and Rosemary worked in the poultry nutrition lab. Following moves to Indiana and Alabama, the family moved to Manhattan in 1960.

Rosemary was a devoted mother and mentor to her sons during their years in public school, KSU, and medical and dental school. Professionally she was employed by the KSU Botany Department, completed her Master's Degree with Honors, and then worked for the Department of Grain Milling and Science, specializing in grain storage diseases. She taught extension courses to agronomists from around the world at KSU and in Africa, Central America, and the Philippines. Rosemary was very involved in the activities and ministries of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, generously devoting her time and talents to her faith community. Rosemary was the last of a matriarchal lineage that extends six generations and touched and nurtured not just generational family members, but literally hundreds of other lives. Rosemary was predeceased by her parents, Geoffrey and Grace Noakes, her husband Albert Burroughs, and her sister Angela Mack. She is survived by her brother Michael (Claudia) Noakes, Fresno, California, sons Nathan (Conni) Burroughs of Kansas City, Missouri, and Gregory (Lesley) Burroughs of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and many friends. Rosemary Burroughs was a loving daughter, sister, wife, and mother, as a trusted confidant, and as a faithful servant. She was greatly admired and will be missed. Pat worked for APAC, Gross Construction and Butler County in road construction using heavy equipment. He loved guns and especially black powder guns and re-enactments from the past. He also enjoyed nature and the outdoors.

His loving family includes his children, Josey, Tobey, Gallagher and Koyotey; two granddaughters, Lydia and Emma; siblings, Stacy Bell (Danny) of Whitewater, Tracy Roth (Joe Cashon) of Newton, Nathaniel Green (Denise) of Whitewater, Tad Green (Melissa) of Whitewater.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Danny Green and an infant granddaughter. Patrick passed away Friday, October 30, 2020 at the age of 66 years old.&nbsp; A private service will be held at a later date.

Cheryl Lynne Pritchard passed away on October 28, 2020 at the Medicalodges of Eudora.&nbsp; She was born August 8, 1944 to John and Mary Rosenquist Mounkes in Emporia, KS.

She attended Americus schools and graduated with the class of 1962. She attended Hays Hairdressing School in Mission, KS and became a licensed hairdresser in 1963. She worked as a cosmetologist until 1965.

Cheryl married her high school sweetheart, Ronald Pritchard, on November 27, 1964. They lived in Emporia, where they raised their daughter Tina, until Ron’s job with the BNSF was transferred to Kansas City.&nbsp; They then made their home in Tonganoxie.

Cheryl’s greatest joy was being a wife, mother and grandmother.&nbsp; She also enjoyed traveling with Ron.&nbsp;&nbsp; After Ron’s retirement, they became snowbirds and spent the winters in Fort Meyers, FL every winter for the past 15 years. Cheryl was a member of the United Transportation Ladies Auxiliary for several years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers David and John Mounkes, sister Mary Weller and grandson Jeffrey P. Diekmann. Cheryl is survived by her husband Ron, and daughter Tina Diekmann and husband Jeffrey of Tonganoxie; grandchildren: Sarah Shaw (Patrick) and Jordan Diekmann, great-grandchild Rhett Shaw; sisters: Sandra Ross, Debra Hubert, and Patricia Davis; brothers Jimmy Mounkes and Richard Mounkes.

Cheryl Lynne Pritchard passed away on October 28, 2020 at the Medicalodges of Eudora.&nbsp; She was born August 8, 1944 to John and Mary Rosenquist Mounkes in Emporia, KS.She attended Americus schools and graduated with the class of 1962. She attended Hays Hairdressing School in Mission, KS and became a licensed hairdresser in 1963. She worked as a cosmetologist until 1965.Cheryl married her high school sweetheart, Ronald Pritchard, on November 27, 1964. They lived in Emporia, where they raised their daughter Tina, until Ron’s job with the BNSF was transferred to Kansas City.&nbsp; They then made their home in Tonganoxie.Cheryl’s greatest joy was being a wife, mother and grandmother.&nbsp; She also enjoyed traveling with Ron.&nbsp;&nbsp; After Ron’s retirement, they became snowbirds and spent the winters in Fort Meyers, FL every winter for the past 15 years. Cheryl was a member of the United Transportation Ladies Auxiliary for several years.She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers David and John Mounkes, sister Mary Weller and grandson Jeffrey P. Diekmann. Carolyn C. Tate, 74, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2020 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, November 6, 2020, at New Church of the Living God with Pastor James E. Johnson officiating. Burial will follow the service at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. Tate’s life story began on April 5, 1946 in Elberton, GA as the youngest of six children born to Sally Lou and George Carter. While on her life’s journey, Carolyn graduated from Blackwell Memorial High School in 1964 and Paine College in Augusta, GA where she received a Bachelor of Art Degree in Sociology with a Minor in English. After graduation she married the love of her life, James Tate, who was also her high school sweetheart, at the home of her brother Reverend Walter H. Carter who officiated the ceremony. She and her loving husband, who had enlisted in the army were blessed to live in Baumholder, Germany, Ft. Benning Georgia, and Ft. Riley, Kansas. Carolyn was a dedicated employee for U.S.D #475 for 32 years. During the last twenty years she was the Director of the Head Start Program. Under her leadership hundreds of children received the foundational skills that would enable them to thrive during their educational advancement. She was committed to not only ensure and creating an atmosphere where essential learning could take place for students, but she was also unwavering when it came to providing support for her employees as well. She led with empathy, compassion, and staunch devotion. Carolyn embodied the attributes of a virtuous woman, a loyal wife, an adoring mother, and a doting grandmother. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated for almost 40 years, and she enjoyed traveling to their National conventions with her husband and her youngest daughter Tagan who eventually became apart of the illustrious sisterhood of finer womanhood. She was a faithful member of New Church of the Living God, alongside her husband, since its inception. It was there where she continued cultivating her walk with Christ to be a shining light for others. Carolyn loved her family. She cherished the times that she spent with her husband, her daughters, her sons-in-love, and her two grandsons. She spoiled each of them in a way that only she could, leaving them feeling adored and valued beyond words. To have Carolyn in your life was to have an incomparable favor that can never be replaced and will never be forgotten. She leaves a legacy of love, hope, perseverance, patience, joy, forgiveness, and strength. Carlos Juan Roman, 77, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2020 at Select Specialty Hospital in Kansas City, KS. Carlos will lie in state on Friday, November 6, 2020 from 5-7 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home.&nbsp; A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, November 7, 2020, at the St. Xavier Catholic Church in Junction City with Fr. Gnanasekar Kulandai officiating. Burial will follow the service at St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorial contributions have been designated to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the Friends of Animals. Carlos was born June 28, 1943 in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Basilio and Celia (Carreras) Roman. At the age of 4 his family moved to New York City, where he remained until graduation from Haaren High School in 1961. After a couple years in the civilian work force, he was drafted into the U S Army and served 20 months in Germany, 26 months in Vietnam and the rest of his time was served at Fort Riley, KS where he was honorably discharged. During his military career he received two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Service medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Unit Presidential Award. During his first year back in the civilian work force, he worked at Westside Dairy for 7 months and then for Bill Haslett tree service for 4 months. In October 1973 he joined the Junction City Police Department as the Animal Control Officer as well as being a member of the police reserves. In June 1975 he became a full-time police officer on street patrol and in February 1981 he was promoted to detective. He retired from the Junction City Police Department in June 1994 and went to work for the Geary County Sheriff Department, where he was promoted to Detective Sergeant in February 1996. In January 2001 he became the Undersheriff for Sheriff James Jensen as well as being the department K-9 handler and supervised the K-9 unit. He retired from law enforcement in February 2011. During his law enforcement career, he obtained his associates degree in criminology and successfully completed many seminars and classes to include those with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He received the Merit Award for Excellent Arrests and Outstanding Commendation Award, both from the American Police Hall of Fame as well as certificates and awards from the Heart of America Police Association. Carolos is survived by his wonderful wife of 42 years, Joan Roman; brother, George (Dolores) Roman of Norwalk, CT; sister, Carmen (Luis) Rivera of Columbus, GA; sisters in law, Cathie Fultz and Paula Fultz of Junction City, KS and Virginia (Howard) Baum of Brandon, FL. We lost our sweet mom, Mary Lou Holmberg on Saturday October 3, 2020 at her home with her children at her side, at the age of 95.

She was a child of the Depression and had lived a good long life. We are comforted knowing that she is reunited with our dad, the love of her life, who we lost 8 years ago.

She was born in Randolph, Kansas, July 11, 1925 on the sleeping porch. She graduated from Randolph High School.&nbsp; She married Merrill Ellery Holmberg in 1946, after he got back from the war. She resided in Overland Park the past 60 years. During that time she was busy being a wonderful wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and great grandmother.&nbsp; She spent many years working at Panhandle Eastern Pipeline and retired from The Jones Store. She enjoyed reading, sewing, crafts, gardening, road trips and church. She and dad exemplified unconditional love.



She is preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Ina Nordstrom, her brother Junior, her son Jeffrey, her grandson Mitchell, her husband Merrill, her sisters and brother and their spouses, and most of her friends.



She is survived by her children, Laura and Brian Stack, Jim Holmberg, and Julie and David Rodlund; her grandchildren, Lindsay, Jason, Megan, Joel, Kyle Hardwick; Hannah Rodlund Emme, Emma, Mary Kate Rodlund; Kirsten Stack Long, Becca Stack Hermanson; and several great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held on November 14, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at the Randolph Fancy Creek Cemetery with Pastor Sandy Ferguson officiating.&nbsp;

LaVone Nihart, 92, of Wamego, Kansas passed away Thursday, October 29, 2020 at the Wellsprings of Westmoreland Care Home.

On August 6, 1928 LaVone, was born to Albert and Vera (Link) Bluthardt in rural Pottawatomie County, Kansas.&nbsp; She worked after high school hours at Harmony Gardens until she was united in marriage to Robert C. Nihart on September 22, 1946 in Wamego.&nbsp; She also worked for a time at Wamego Floral, Menhusen Produce, the Louisville Grade School as an assistant cook, and substituted for the Postmaster at the Louisville Post Office.

Her true love was her family.&nbsp; She is survived by 3 children, Shirley (Frank) Wampler, Assaria, KS, Robert Douglas (Cindy) Nihart, Manhattan, KS, Thomas Lane (Ruth) Nihart, Wamego, KS; son-in-law, Randy Niedfeldt, Belvue, KS; 6 grandchildren, Bryce &amp; Jason Wampler, April Bayless, Tyrel &amp; Trevor Niedfeldt, and Rachel Wylie; and 13 grandchildren.

Death has taken her husband of 57 years, her parents, a daughter Connie, grandson Luke, and brother Vernon.

Gordon E. Taylor passed away on October 28th at the age of 89 after a long battle with dementia. Gordon was born at his home in Pearl KS, the son of Leslie J Taylor and Nina Grace (Huff) Taylor. He attended the Pearl grade school and graduated from DCCHS in 1949. He married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Lorene Lauer, on March 18, 1951. Left to mourn Gordon’s passing is his loving wife of 69 years, their children including Terry (Karlene) Taylor of Abilene KS, Nina (Gary) Shasteen of Caseyville IL, Roger Taylor &amp; Tim Dummer of Kansas City, MO, Son-in-law Joe Saia of Topeka, 4 grandchildren-Kari (Jason) Hall, Kyle (Emily) Taylor, Ashley (Scott) Heuke, Kali (Sean) Maclaskey, 8 great grandsons, 1 great granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, his 2 sisters and his daughter Glenda. Gordon worked for ANR pipeline in Enterprise KS for 38 years. Out of high school, he worked the family farm with his father. After retirement from ANR, he farmed full time, eventually being joined by his oldest son Terry. The Taylor family farm received the Dickinson County Soil Conservation Award. Gordon also proudly served as a Logan Township board member for many years, the Pearl Coop as a board member and was a member of the Enterprise United Methodist Church. As the family grew, he enjoyed taking them on many family vacations. A favorite was heading to Minnesota for fishing during the summer. Gordon &amp; Joyce also enjoyed their trips to Canada for fishing trips. Another passion of Gordon’s was the building and flying of model airplanes. He also took up wood working in his shop and enjoyed hunting coyote’s with friends. Private family services for Gordon will be held Sunday, November 1, 2020. Visitation will be from 1-4&nbsp; p.m., Saturday, October 31, 2020 at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home. Avis A. Duncan Bidwell was born August 2, 1916 at the Hobble family farm home in Sedgwick County, Kansas to Howard R. Hobble and Cora F. Bissell Hobble. Avis died peacefully on October 27, 2020 at Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan, Kansas. Avis grew up on the family farm along with her siblings, Rex, Nova, and Don, and was active in Sedgwick County 4-H activities. After graduating from Valley Center High School in 1934, Avis entered nurses training at Saint Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas in 1935. She graduated in May 1938 and served on the Saint Francis Hospital staff as a Registered Nurse until mid-December 1938. She was united in marriage to Alley H. Duncan on December 24, 1938 in Sedgwick County. Following the end of WWII, Avis and Alley resided in Manhattan, Kansas where Alley served on the Kansas State University Mechanical Engineering Department faculty. Avis and Alley shared a long, loving life together dedicated to raising their four sons: Noel, Lloyd, Jerry, and Merle. Avis was preceded in death by her husband, Alley, on March 11, 1998, and by her son, Merle, on December 22, 2012. On December 9, 2002, Avis was united in marriage to Orville W. Bidwell in Manhattan, Kansas. Avis and Orville shared a loving life and mutual interest in world travel until Orville’s death on June 5, 2006. Avis enjoyed playing bridge with her many friends, traveling to new places, and being a fan of whatever sport was in season. She especially enjoyed visiting with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her nieces and nephews. Survivors include Noel H. Duncan of Hancock, New Hampshire; Lloyd F. Duncan of Columbia Falls, Montana; Jerry R. Duncan and wife, Sara, of Bettendorf, Iowa; Robert S. Bidwell and wife, Jo, of Aurora, Colorado; and Ann E. Bidwell of Chicago, Illinois. Ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren also survive. Avis bequeathed her body to the Willed Body Program at the University of Kansas School of Medicine for the advancement of medical education and research.
