Dorothy (Mother Gilbert) Lee Gilbert, 95, of Junction City, Kansas passed away on March 15, 2024, in her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on May 3, 1928, to Charles and Mary Gertrude (Downs) Wilson in Taylorsville, Kentucky. Dorothy married her husband, Lifford, December 3, 1949, while they were living in Indianapolis, Indiana. She had seven children that she raised in Indianapolis: Michael Harwell, William Harwell, Ronald Gilbert, Deborah (Gilbert) Jones, Reginald Gilbert, Dwayne Gilbert, Holly Michelle Gilbert and her niece, Denise Gaddie. Later in life, she raised three of her grandchildren: Alyson Brown, Latoya Reed, and Janelle Jackson.December 3, 1949, she married her husband, Lifford Gilbert and were happily married for 36 years. During their early years of marriage, they were a part of a few churches in Indianapolis, but they made the decision to bring their family to Junction City so they could pastor the Pentecostal Church. Mother Gilbert was involved with The Pentecostal Church for many years. She had many responsibilities within the church such as being the First Lady, organizing the Women's of Faith Choir, and she started and organized the church's first prayer band committee.

She is survived by her two sons, Ronald (Norma) Gilbert and Reginald Gilbert; one daughter, Deborah (Sam) Jones and a host of other family and friends. She is preceded by her three sons, Michael Harwell, William Harwell, and Dwayne Gilbert; one daughter, Holly Michelle Gilbert and her parents, Charles and Mary Gertrude.

A visitation will take place at The Pentecostal Church, Monday, March 25, 2024, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service, Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at The Pentecostal Church. A committal service will follow at Highland Cemetery.

She was a member St. Mary’s Alter Society and Clifton America Legion Auxiliary.

Rita is survived by Kathleen (Jerry) Sorrell if Clyde Kansas, David (Linda) Alexander of Kerrville, TX, Ronald (Nanay) Alexander Emporia, Ks, Danial Aleander of Salina, Ks., Dennis (Carol) Alexander of Clifton, Ks., Cynthia (Randy) Dugan of El Dorado, Ks., Phyllis (Lowell) Reith of Salina, Ks., and one sister in law Nan Alexander of Sahse, Tx and numerous grandchildren, Great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and Numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death of her husband Lawrence (Bus), her parents Henry and Veronica Ruhkamp, sisters Lela Moravek and Delores Keiffer and 2 grandsons Joe Sorell and Treff Alexander.

Visitations will be from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Clifton, Ks Rosary will be recited at 6&nbsp; p.m.

James L. “Jim” Frohardt was born July 14, 1943 in Clay Center, Kansas the son of Emil Laverne and Myrtle Chamberlin Frohardt.&nbsp; Jim passed away March 3, 2024 at Stormont Vail Flint Hill campus in Junction City.

&nbsp; Jim attended the Upland School and graduated from DCCHS with the class of 1961.After graduation Jim worked for the Alida Coop, the City of Chapman in the capacity of a police officer and Chief of Police. Jim also served as long time Chapman Fire Chief as well as a member of Dickinson County Fire District #1. Jim operated the Frohardt Garage and farmed for many years.Jim married Kathy Manbeck on October 4, 1964 in Chapman. 

Jim is survived by his wife Kathy of the home, his daughter Tina Frohardt of Chapman, his son Shawn Frohardt of Topeka and his loyal four-legged son Riley. Jim is also survived by his grandsons Joel Jordan of Junction City and Trent Jordan and his wife Stephanie of rural Chapman, his sister-in-law Vicki Rehm (Dean) of Abilene and nephew Chad LIvingston (Michele) of Abilene, and Brian Livingston (Angie) of Olathe, KS and a niece Stacia Wiley (Darin) of Chapman as well as great nieces and nephew Kaylee Livingston, Tori and Jaxon Foy. Jim was preceded in death by his parents.

A family visitation will be held at the Londeen-Overlease Chapel 206 W. 5th street in Chapman Friday evening March 22nd beginning at 6:00 p.m. The memorial service will be held Saturday March 23rd at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapman United Methodist Church 426 Sheeran Chapman, Kansas

Georgia Marie Phillips, 96 of Abilene, Kansas passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at Village Manor Nursing Home. Georgia was born on January 7, 1928 in Enterprise, Kansas, the daughter of George and Amy Haslouer. She grew up in the Enterprise area. She married Donald Phillips on September 22, 1947 at St. Andrew’s church in Abilene, KS. Don and Georgia had four children; Patricia, Jeanette, Sarah, and Charles.

Georgia was a homemaker during the early married years, and after the kids got into school, she worked for eight years as a nurses’ aide. She then drove a nine passenger school bus for the Chapman school district for six years. Georgia was a Girl Scout Leader for ten years and leader of the food’s class in 4H for six years. She enjoyed oil painting (many of which can be found in the children’s homes), gardening, and most any type of craft. She was also active in the Enterprise EHU group. She and Don had a standing monthly pinochle game with their Enterprise friends. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Abilene.Her main interest was always with her children and grandchildren. She was always there for the kids growing up, but, she loved taking care of the grandkid’s; watching them for their parents, going to their sporting events, dances, 4H reviews, and anything else they might be involved in. To some of them she was the “orange” grandma, to others “Grandma Lambie”, but to all, greatly loved.

Survivor’s include: her children, Patricia Oglesby (Mike) of Goodyear, AZ; Jeanette Vahsholtz of Abilene, KS; Sarah Tidwell of Emporia, KS; and Charles Phillips (Jackie) of Enterprise, KS; eight grandchildren, Michelle Roeser (Rayne), Amanda Kay (Aaron), Travis Ramos, Philip Tidwell (Liesl), Chris Tidwell (Stephanie), Cassie Kolinski (Trevor), Callie Bell (TJ), and Carlie Huser (Adam); 13 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Judy Louise (Mikesell) Hettenbach, of Abilene, KS, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on March 13, 2024, surrounded by family and close friends. For all 66 years of her life, she was a devoted sister, wife, mother, Nana and friend. Judy was born to Ernest and Margaret Mikesell of Belleville, KS on March 23, 1957. She was the oldest of four. Judy had an early love of reading and that continued throughout her life. Judy loved to play with the barn cats and kittens on the farm. During high school, Judy worked as a candy striper and that sparked her interest in nursing and helping others in that way.&nbsp; After graduating high school, she attended Central Christian for one year and then graduated from Asbury School of Nursing as an RN. She worked at Asbury Hospital as a nurse on the Pediatrics and Med/Surg units. In 1978, Judy met Bruce Hettenbach and they were married on December 1, 1979. They enjoyed 44 wonderful years of marriage together. Judy and Bruce enjoyed ski trips to Colorado, a trip to Niagara Falls with the Halls, and having friends over to play games. Many Saturday nights were spent at Bruce’s parents playing Pitch. In 1985 they moved to Abilene for Bruce’s accounting business and invested deeply into their new community. In 1987 Ellen joined their family, followed by Sarah in 1990. Being a mom was one of Judy’s greatest joys and she was a patient and loving mom. Judy was a good teacher, and she spent many years of her life homeschooling her girls and helping lead Heartland Home Educators. Countless hours were spent taking the girls to various sports practices and meets and cheering them on in their pursuits. Family vacations were a yearly highlight. The girls and their friends remember cooking and baking often with Judy. She loved her 4 grandkids: Nathan, Natalie, Nora and Noah. She would read books and play with them. She enjoyed giving them gifts and sending them mail with fun papers and stickers in it.Judy made many crocheted baby blankets, afghans, and quilts for friends and family. Judy loved to listen to hymns and had many hymns completely memorized. Piano music brought Judy joy and she shared that joy with others by teaching beginning piano lessons. Judy enjoyed capturing everyday life through the camera lens and putting together photo albums. She enjoyed walking with Bruce and admiring the moon and sunsets.Most of all though, Judy loved the Lord. Judy and Bruce were faithful members of Community Bible Church for 36 years. Judy served for over 20 years as the preschool Sunday School teacher and several years helped to organize VBS. She was instrumental in the Ladies Prayer group and impacted many lives through her careful study of the Bible and her prayers. She devoted large amounts of the Word to memory and documented many verses she prayed over her loved ones.

Judy is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Margaret, and her brother Fred Mikesell, all of Belleville. She is survived by her husband, Bruce of Abilene; daughters Ellen (Michael) Pope of Wichita, KS and their children, Nathan, Natalie, Nora and Noah; and Sarah Hettenbach of Colorado Springs, CO; brother Dave (Lisa) Mikesell of Republic, KS and sister Nancy (Greg) Gossell of Lee’s Summit, MO, and many nieces and nephews.

Judy Louise (Mikesell) Hettenbach

Our world has become a lot less bright with the loss of our dear Frank.

Frank C. Parrett entered the world at Leavenworth, Kansas on March 15, 1936. He was the third child born to Glen and Katherine (Shortridge) Parrett, joining sisters Olive Mae and Dorothy. His brother Robert (Gus) followed a few years later. Frank moved as a youth with his family to Haddam, Kansas and thereafter forever considered it his hometown. After completing his education there he found his niche in alfalfa and feed commodity trading. He was a self-made man and thrived in this industry, cultivating lifelong friendships and contacts as only Frank could. He never met a stranger. He began his career in Yaggy, Kansas, moving in 1960 to Consolidated Blenders and then to Hillside Dehy in Uehling, Nebraska in 1963. Frank eventually became part owner of Scribner Alfalfa in the early 1970s. Among his many adventures is surviving an alfalfa pellet fire, during which he sustained significant injuries. Frank eventually sold his business and worked for Switzer Trading, moving and trading grain commodities from 1987 to 2001. He was even lured from his retirement by Tallgrass Commodities in Wamego, Kansas to help mentor the staff and grow the company. He cherished the friends that he made there and so enjoyed working into his sunset years.

Frank was blessed with two long marriages. He wed Francisca “Frisco” Quinn on March 17, 1956. They were married for 45 years, until her death on April 18, 2001. They had no children. Frank acquired a ready-made family upon his marriage to Alberta K. Lallak on September 19, 2003. He cherished her children and grandchildren as his own. He was a devoted husband, father and “Papa Frank.” He and Alberta spent their best years together, traveling the world by boat, plane, train and RV. He was a fixture for many years in row 10 at Country Stampede and enjoyed playing Pitch, Pinochle, Poker (really, any and all card games!) and Pegs &amp; Jokers with family and dear friends.

Frank was a character, full of pithy comments and astute observations about life, all the while befriending those in his path, from neighbors and co-workers, to store clerks and wait staff at restaurants. We always got special attention with Frank around! While he yearned to be home, his last days spent at Wellsprings of Westmoreland, Kansas were enriched by new friendships with the staff and fellow residents. The nursing staff there reported that if he wasn’t harassing them, they knew something was wrong.

Frank is survived by his wife, Alberta Lallak-Parrett, his children Steve (Deb) Shepek, Todd (Siri) Shepek and Johnette Shepek, four grandchildren, Erin (Kyle) Hedrick, John (Ashley) Shepek, Tim (Jenna) Shepek and Kaylee (Trent) Ulbrich, eight great-grandchildren, Kailee and Aiden Shepek, Wyatt, Audrey, Grace and Sophie Hedrick and Ava and Beckett Shepek, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Frank delighted in the antics of his beloved dogs over the years—Clarence (a female, in spite of her name), Winnie Pooh and Maggie. His most contented moments were when he was driving the roads of Nebraska with Clarence perched on the seatback behind him or snuggled into his recliner with Winnie or Maggie on his lap.

Frank had a big personality and an even bigger heart. He will be so missed by those who loved him.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Friday April 5, 2024 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday April 5, 2024 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home. Private inurnment will be at a later date.

 </figure>Our world has become a lot less bright with the loss of our dear Frank.Frank C. Parrett entered the world at Leavenworth, Kansas on March 15, 1936. He was the third child born to Glen and Katherine (Shortridge) Parrett, joining sisters Olive Mae and Dorothy. His brother Robert (Gus) followed a few years later. Frank moved as a youth with his family to Haddam, Kansas and thereafter forever considered it his hometown. After completing his education there he found his niche in alfalfa and feed commodity trading. He was a self-made man and thrived in this industry, cultivating lifelong friendships and contacts as only Frank could. He never met a stranger. He began his career in Yaggy, Kansas, moving in 1960 to Consolidated Blenders and then to Hillside Dehy in Uehling, Nebraska in 1963. Frank eventually became part owner of Scribner Alfalfa in the early 1970s. Among his many adventures is surviving an alfalfa pellet fire, during which he sustained significant injuries. Frank eventually sold his business and worked for Switzer Trading, moving and trading grain commodities from 1987 to 2001. Frank C. Parrett 

Marvin Gould was born in Enfield, Middlesex, England to Amy House Gould, a classical and jazz pianist and Edwin Gould, a draftsman and engineer. In 1951, Marvin and his family came to the U.S. via the Transatlantic Brides and Parents Association aboard the S.S. America. Their first home in the U.S. was in Kansas City and ten years later they settled in Texas. Marvin died of cancer in the same city where he first lived more than 70 years later.

Marvin’s passions were family, art, music and golf, among thousands of other interests. He was an endless seeker of knowledge and could hold a conversation with anyone. His sense of humor and wit are what drew people to him. Today, he would still be talking with the nurses if he could. We often joked he would win at Jeopardy if given the chance.

To appease his mother, Marvin was formally trained as a pianist and read and wrote music. During his teenage years in a rebellious streak, he took up the guitar, began playing rock ‘n roll and never turned back. One of his students wrote him a note saying, “you are a juke box hero.” To stay out of trouble, he played in a band during high school in venues around Texas. Later in Kansas, he became a member of Melvin and the Monotones and the Back Porch Blues Band. His solo performance was “Knockout” by the Bad News Blues Band. He was reciting lyrics to some of his favorite rock and roll music days before he died.

Marvin’s love of music translated into appreciating marks on a page and an understanding of time between notes and the space between lines. At the age of eight, his father gave him a Speedball lettering book, several pin points and a bottle of ink; with these tools he drew the Montgomery Ward catalog. Fascinated by lines on a page, Marvin developed a love of drawing that continued throughout his life. Art was his solace and his means of Marking • Time.

In 1969, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served as an airplane refueler along the flight line on Okinawa during the Vietnam Conflict. There, he developed an appreciation for the Asian culture and landscape, often reflected in his art work. He was honorably discharged as an E4.

After his military service, Marvin was a draftsman for a steel corporation in Houston and then branched out to sign making and billboard design for companies in Texas, Utah and Kansas. At one point during his career in Texas, he was painting a billboard and fell from the scaffolding. Later he joked, “I shouldn’t have stepped back to critique my work”. Marvin earned his Bachelor’s in Fine Arts from Sam Houston State University in the 1970s. Thirty years later, he returned to school and earned a Master of Fine Arts from Kansas State University. He was a graduate teaching assistant and then an instructor of art at K-State. He was passionate about teaching, and genuinely cared about his students. It was never just about art, but about life and learning about oneself.

While teaching and after his retirement, he also worked as a Gallery Tech at the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art and assisted exhibit designers and curators with all aspects of display, design and maintenance. Marvin worked on the installation and design of many exhibitions over the years, one of the more difficult ones, especially related to signage, vinyl and lettering was Pete Souza: Two Presidents, One Photographer.

Marvin’s own works of art are displayed in galleries in Houston, Tulsa and the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, in addition to homes around the country.

An avid athlete in high school, he played every sport, but baseball was his favorite. He developed a passion for golf and began teaching his daughter Ashley to play when she was two. That passion continued through January of this year when he was playing in 37-degree weather. He has certificates to prove two-holes-in-one, both on Kansas golf courses. One of his favorite memories was walking the Old Course at St. Andrews Golf Club in Scotland on a beautiful fall day with his besties – Millie and Donna.

On St. Patrick’s Day (a date he could easily remember), Marvin and Rebecca were married in Denton, Texas. Daughter Ashley was his love. He was incredibly proud of her accomplishments and instilled in her a love of art, creativity, sports, music, how to fix stuff, and so much more.

Marvin cherished his many friends and colleagues including, Beth, Duane, Lindsay, Nelson, Raleigh, his golf buddies, art colleagues, and so many more.

He is survived by Rebecca, his wife of almost 44 years, his daughter Ashley Jager, son-in-law Robert Jager, his precious grandson Alex Jager, half-sister Elizabeth Davidson and many cousins in England. He is also survived by other family members including the Matochas, van Dijks, Schoemans, Bacons, Borrellos and his much-loved nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Marilyn Susan Gould.

The family thanks the Manhattan and KU Medical Center nurses and physicians for the care they showed Marvin over the last months of his life.

A celebration of his life and art will be held later in the year.

Marvin Gould 

Manfred (Red) Roy Nelly, 69, of Junction City, Kansas, passed away on March 14, 2024, in his home. Cremation has taken place and a private family graveside service will take place at a later date.

He was born on July 29, 1954, to Everett and Grete (Gneich) Nelly at Great Lakes, Illinois. At the age of two, his family decided to move to Junction City. This is where Red stayed and made his life.The year leading up to his high school graduation day from Junction City High School, Red decided to enlist into the U.S. Marines and served honorably between the years of 1972 - 1976. Red took a job at the Railcar Repair Plant after his military career. He was very dedicated to his work. Red started as a shop employee and worked to become a supervisor and later, plant manager. September 1, 2021, he decided to retire to spend more time with his family and with his hobbies. He was an active member of Boy Scout Troop 460 of Milford, Kansas and the Adventure Scouts. His passions were hunting, fishing, camping, and his family.

He is survived by his loving wife Pamela; one son, John Nelly; one step son, Carl Campbell; one grand daughter, Gracie Campbell; one nephew, Jason Nelly, his wife, Teresa, and their two children, Jayden, and Tatum; one niece, Melissa Nelly-Cramer her husband Michael, and their two children, Monroe and Buddy, and a host of other loving friends.He is preceded by his parents, one brother, George and his wife Kathi Nelly.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2024, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Manfred (Red) Roy Nelly

James Robert (Jim) Phelps (85) was born August 29, 1938, in a farmhouse five miles southwest of Miltonvale, KS, to Ernest and Ida (Geist) Phelps. He passed away March 7, 2024. &nbsp;

Jim attended Grass Valley rural grade school and graduated from Miltonvale Rural High School in 1956. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1961 with a degree in education. &nbsp;He later earned a master’s degree in education from K-State.

&nbsp;Growing up, Jim spent many summers working on his father’ farm, and for other local farmers. &nbsp;He also spent two summers working for his oldest sister, Grace and her husband Elmo Kaiser at their ranch near Ellendale, North Dakota.

In the fall of 1961 Jim began his teaching career which spanned 33 years. He taught two years at Walker Grade School, a one room school near Longford, Kansas. Then three years at Wakefield, Ks. &nbsp;junior high school. The next 28 years he spent teaching English at Wakefield High School. &nbsp;He retired from teaching in 1994.

Jim loved playing and watching sports. He was the head basketball coach for Wakefield junior high, and an assistant coach for the boys’ basketball team at the high school. &nbsp;Jim was also the head coach for the Wakefield Girl’s high school basketball team when they first started playing. He sometimes donned pads and scrimmaged with the high school football team, and also played town team basketball and softball. &nbsp;He played some golf, but his favorite sport to play was tennis.&nbsp;

Jim never married, but he had a large family. &nbsp;He was a fixture at holiday and weekend gatherings at his sister, Betty and husband Clayton Reed’s farm at nearby Oak Hill. &nbsp;Their three kids, eight grandkids, and eleven great-grandkids meant there was always a lot of activity at the farm.

Jim also spent quite a bit of time with his brother Wayne in Hutchinson, wife Melva Jean, and their two kids and three great-grandkids. Distance made it more difficult, but he was still able to stay close with Grace and Elmo Kaiser, their five boys, twelve grandkids and 24 great-grandkids

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, sister Grace and husband Elmo Kaiser, sister Betty and husband Clayton Reed, nephews Ray Kaiser and Randy Reed, and niece Dana (Reed) Hayes. &nbsp;He is survived by a brother, Wayne and wife Melva Jean Phelps, nephews Bob, Frank, John, and Jim Kaiser, Mark Reed, and Steve Phelps, and niece Kimberly (Phelps) Frieze. &nbsp;

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 15th at the Madura Congregational Church, 802 Grove St., Wakefield, Ks. &nbsp;A light luncheon will follow the service.

Burial to follow at 1:30 p.m. in the Miltonvale cemetery, Miltonvale, Ks. &nbsp;

James Robert (Jim) Phelps

Herman Kastner, age 95, Manhattan, KS, passed away peacefully at the Good Shepherd Hospice House on March 13, 2024.

Herman was born March 8, 1929, on a farm near Perry, Iowa, the son of Frank Kastner and Emily Biederman Kastner. Herman grew up in the Perry and Yale, Iowa communities attending the local schools including a one-room country school. He was a graduate of Panora High School and Iowa State College in 1950, with a B.S. Degree in Animal Science. He served in the Air Force as a 1st Lieutenant during the Korean War with a tour of duty in Okinawa.

While in the service and stationed at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, he met Rita Tasset of Kinsley, Kansas and they were married September 6, 1952. After military service he began farming near Kinsley, Kansas in 1953. Due to the 50’s drought he took a job with the John Hancock Farm Mortgage Department and later with the local county ASCS-USDA office. He continued what became a successful farming operation for over 40 years and retired from the USDA in 1987 after 30 years of service. In 1978, the family moved to Manhattan as Herman’s job took him to the ASCS (now FSA) State Office as Head Program Specialist for Farm Programs.

In college, Herman was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho social fraternity and a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Sigma Delta and Alpha Zeta honorary fraternities. Other college activities were membership on the Livestock Judging Team and Block and Bridle, Scabbard and Blade and Campus 4-H clubs.

Herman was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus, Habitat for Humanity, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and several business and professional organizations.

Survivors include his four children: David Kastner (Susan), Fayetteville, AR; Denise Anderson, Santa Fe, NM; Kathy Lyman (Chuck), Manhattan, KS and Cynthia Birnbaum (Jeff), Manhattan, KS. Herman is also survived by nine grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and his brother Joe Kastner, Davenport, IA

Herman was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife Rita and siblings Paul as an infant, Alfred, Carl, Ernest, Helen and Francis.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at held on March 20, at 10:00 a.m., St Thomas More Catholic Church, 2900 Kimball Avenue in Manhattan. Visitation and a luncheon at St. Thomas More Utopia Room will be served directly after Mass. Inurnment will be at the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday March 20, 2024.

Herman grew up in the Perry and Yale, Iowa communities attending the local schools including a one-room country school. He was a graduate of Panora High School and Iowa State College in 1950, with a B.S. Degree in Animal Science. He served in the Air Force as a 1st Lieutenant during the Korean War with a tour of duty in Okinawa.While in the service and stationed at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, he met Rita Tasset of Kinsley, Kansas and they were married September 6, 1952. Robert Duane Frotscher was born 11/23/45 to Audrey and Harold Frotscher.

He is preceded in death by his son Brad Frotscher, his sister Marlene Frotscher, his Father Harold, mother Audrey, and wife Betty Louise Frotscher.

Robert enjoyed all things outdoors. His whole life was about fishing and hunting. He loved guns, bows, and most recently air rifles. He loved to learn and create all kinds of new inventions made of bow string, pvc pipe, and anything else he found laying around. He tied beautiful flies for trout fishing. He was so creative.

Robert was a man of many talents from sign painting to all other types of painting. He enjoyed sculpting, creating swords, and even built an art studio in his home. He was very proud of his studio. There are so many windows he was able to enjoy all of Gods beauty.

Robert was such a caring and compassionate person. He once rescued a dog that had been hit by a car. He brought her home, took her to the vet, and nursed her back to health. He named her Jett after Joan Jett because she was all black. She was his very best friend.

Robert didn’t have many close friends but the ones he did have he cherished. He will forever be missed.

Robert Duane Frotscher - November 23, 1945  -  March 10, 2024

Surrounded by loved ones and after a courageous battle with cancer, Kenneth Pilcher Smith passed away on January 10th, 2024. Born in Beaverton Alabama to Fred Clint Smith and Annie

Lou Abbott Smith he was the youngest of four children. During his childhood Ken spent his time exploring the woods around Winfield Alabama and was a Boy Scout. He attended high school in Winfield Alabama and played football, newspaper club, library club, and dramatics and graduated from Winfield High School with the class of 1953.

After high school Ken joined the army in 1955. He completed basic training in Fort Jackson South Carolina and AIT in Fort Meade Maryland where earned the 98 series MOS Signals Intelligence. His military career took him all over the world and he proudly served during Korea and Vietnam. While stationed in Taipei, Taiwan he fell in love with and married Shu-Jee Che (Carol) on April 13th, 1960. They had three daughters together Ruby, Patty, and Peggy Sue. Carol preceded him in death on October 7th, 1976. Ken retired from the army in 1975 at the rank of Master Sergeant. After his career in the army he worked for NATO where he fell in love with and married Sonia Smith on August 9th, 1978 in Decatur Alabama. They had two children, Fredric. After his career in NATO Ken worked in the Civil Service for Missile Command.

Proudly serving in Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

After retiring from Civil Service Ken and Sonia settled in central Kansas and started a ranch.

Ken was an avid runner and raced in many marathons around the world. He enjoyed fishing, reading a good book, and watching Alabama football with his children and grandchildren.

Ken was a devoted and loving husband and father. He was adored by his family and instilled in them a strong work ethic, love of country, and a dedicated sense of family.

Bruce C. Spellman aged 72, passed away at his home in Manhattan, KS March 09, 2024. Born to William and Alice (VanGoethem) Spellman in Newark, NJ on July 4, 1951, he lived a life marked by love for his family and service to his community. Bruce is survived by his wife Julie (Brunner) Spellman, his two sons Jason (Renee) Spellman of Paxico and Joe Spellman of Lawrence, his grandchildren Dillon (Shay), Grace, Austin, Aspen, and Taylen and one Great-Grandchild to be born soon. He is also survived by two brothers Brian (Mary Sue) Spellman of Wexford, PA, Gary Spellman of Charlotte, NC, a sister-in-law Jean (Chuck) Wilson and several nieces and nephews.

Bruce’s family moved to Moon Township, PA when he was a child and settled there. He enjoyed summers on his Grandparents farm in Gardner, KS. He graduated from Moon High School and went to Kansas State University where he graduated with a degree in Animal Science. While in Manhattan, Bruce met the love of his life and was united with Julie in Holy Matrimony on November 20, 1976, at St Isidore’s Catholic Student Center. They remained in Manhattan as lifelong residents and raised their family there.

Bruce will be missed by the community with more than 40 years in the Manhattan Optimist Club and a long-time member of the St Thomas More Knights of Columbus Council #8488 as well as spending 25+ years working at Mead Lumber. He always had a smile for those around him. He was a dedicated K-State fan and rarely missed a home game of the Women’s basketball team.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Manhattan, KS on Friday, March 15, 2024, at 10:00am. Visitation at the church will be held 5:30-7:00pm Thursday, March 14, followed by a rosary. The family suggests donations to St Thomas More Knights of Columbus or the Manhattan Optimist Club in lieu of flowers.

Darlene Mae Schwellenbach, 90, passed away on December 26, 2023, in Manhattan, Kansas.

Darlene was born in Presho, South Dakota in 1933 to Emil and Josephine (Dreier) Strathman. She graduated from Pierre (South Dakota) High School in 1951. She married Donald (Don) Schwellenbach in 1952, and they lived in Morro Bay, California until Don was discharged from the Army. They then moved back to Pierre and raised their two sons. In 1972 the family moved to Glendale, Arizona, where Darlene opened a ceramics store and excelled at teaching ceramics classes to students of all ages. 

Darlene was a devoted wife and mother and volunteered as a teacher’s aide. Darlene and Don enjoyed many trips in their RV until Don’s death in 1996. She later married Eugene (Gene) Smith and together they lived in Munds Park, Arizona, until his death in 2013. Throughout her lifetime, Darlene was an avid gardener, seamstress, and crafter, and she always doted on her many pets.

She is survived by her son Ray Schwellenbach; son David Schwellenbach and his wife, Sara; grandson Lucas Schwellenbach and his wife, Alicia; granddaughter Melinda Kemp; great-grandson Kyle Kemp; and sister, Shirley Nieman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Don; sisters Alvina Johnson, Mabel McDowell, and Mildred Simpson; husband Gene; and many aunts, uncles, and in-laws.

Darlene's warm and caring nature will be deeply missed by her family and friends. May her memory bring comfort to all those who knew and loved her.

A graveside service was held at Resthaven Park Cemetery in Glendale, Arizona on January 12, 2024.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Manhattan, Kansas on March 29, 2024 from 4:00 until 7:00p.m. at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

William "Bill" Foltz peacefully passed away on March 10, 2024 at the age of 79. He was born on May 22, 1944, the son of Leo and Esther (Feeback) Foltz. Bill was raised and resided in Abilene, KS before moving to Manhattan, KS in the early 1990s.

As a Kansas State University graduate, Bill used his business degree to enjoy a 60 plus year career in various sales roles, most recently with Auto Services Corporation.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Robert (Bob) Foltz.

Bill is survived by his loving partner of 35 years, Adell Eddy, his children: Kelly Leister (Rusty) of Salina, KS, Clay Foltz, Wamego, KS, and Brett (Hope)Foltz, Manhattan KS; his grandchildren: Cooper, Cash and Cord Foltz, Wamego, KS, Mack and Ava Foltz, Manhattan, KS, Casey (Zach) Prester, Salina, KS; his sister Pat Foltz (Matthew) of Youngstown, Ohio his sister-in-law, Linda Foltz, Hoisington KS, along with his nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.

Spending time with his grandchildren and attending their events was a priority for Bill. As an avid K-State Fan, he could often be found at various Wildcat sporting events including nearly all home football games since he purchased tickets in 1968. When not with his grandkids or cheering on the ‘Cats, Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling to Colorado with Adell.

The family will be receiving friends during a visitation on Sunday, March 17, 2024 from 2-4pm at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

A service of remembrance will be held on Monday March 18, 2024, 10:30 a.m. at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan. Interment will follow at the St. Patrick’s Cemetery on Elbow Creek in Manhattan.

In honor of Bill, purple or K-State attire is welcomed.

William 'Bill' Foltz

Surrounded by loved ones and after a courageous battle with cancer, Kenneth Pilcher Smith passed away on January 10th, 2024. 

Born in Beaverton Alabama to Fred Clint Smith and Annie Lou Abbott Smith he was the youngest of four children. During his childhood Ken spent his time exploring the woods around Winfield Alabama and was a Boy Scout. He attended high school in Winfield Alabama and played football, newspaper club, library club, and dramatics and graduated from Winfield High School with the class of 1953.

After high school Ken joined the army in 1955. He completed basic training in Fort Jackson, South Carolina and AIT in Fort Meade Maryland where earned the 98 series MOS Signals Intelligence. His military career took him all over the world and he proudly served during Korea and Vietnam. While stationed in Taipei, Taiwan he fell in love with and married Shu-Jee Che (Carol) on April 13th, 1960. They had three daughters together Ruby, Patty, and Peggy Sue.

Carol preceded him in death on October 7th, 1976. Ken retired from the army in 1975 at the rank of Master Sergeant. After his career in the army he worked for NATO where he fell in love with and married Sonia Smith on August 9th, 1978 in Decatur Alabama. They had two children, Fredric. 

After his career in NATO Ken worked in the Civil Service for Missile Command. Proudly serving in Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents Fred Clint Smith and Annie Lou Smith, first wife Carol Smith, Infant daughter Peggy Sue, brother Freddie Clyde, and Twin Sisters Betty Joyce and Sarah Jean.

Ken is survived by his wife Sonia Smith, Daughters Ruby Frischkorn and husband Mike of Santa Rosa beach Florida, Patricia Cornesky and husband Andy of West Palm Beach Florida, Son Fredric Smith of Chapman Kansas. Grandchildren Christina Rogers and husband Bob, Ashley Leonard and husband Ray of Sierra Madre California, Taylor Sneed of Denver Colorado, Treven Hall of Fargo North Dakota, Ila, Tamsin, Cordelia, and Penny Hall of Bloomington Illinois.

There will be a visitation on April 4th, 2024 from 5-7 PM at Saint Michael’s Church, Chapman, Kansas.

There will be a funeral mass on April 5th, 2024 starting at 10 AM at Saint Michael’s Church, Chapman, Kansas. Immediately following will be a burial at Saint Patrick Cemetery in Chapman, Kansas. Father Peter O’Donnell officiating

Debra (Miss Deb) K. Brown, 63, of Junction City, Kansas passed away on March 11, 2024, at Good Shepherd Hospice House. 

Cremation has taken place and a family led celebration of life will take place at a later date.

Debra was born on May 24, 1960, in Massachusetts.

Debra spent her time taking care of her family. Her daughter, Ashley, will always remember their time together playing cards, cooking, coloring, and looking for four leaf clovers.

Debra is now among her beloved night sky.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Ashley Brown of Junction City, Kansas; one step daughter, Vanessa Nixon of Fresno, California and a host of other loving friends.

Arlan Earl Shandy, age 81, a lifetime area resident, died March 8, 2024, at his residence in Riley.

He was born September 15, 1942, in Clay Center, Kansas, the son of Earl and Edith (Meyer) Shandy.

Arlan graduated from Chapman High School. He was a construction inspector and had worked for Kaw Valley Engineering in Junction City for many years.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge # 1037 in Junction City.

Arlan was a true outdoorsman and loved hunting, fishing and trapping. He was also an avid sports fan and wouldn’t pass up any game of cards. In his later years, he most enjoyed playing cribbage with Mardy for rights to the remote control, taking the dog for rides, and watching poker on TV.

He was married to Martha Anne “Mardy” Shandy for 32 years. Mardy survives of the home. Additional survivors include three children: Shelley Crawley, Bridget Broderick and Sean Broderick; one sister Susan Shandy; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.

A Celebration of Arlan’s life will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. Friday, March 15th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502.

Peggy A. Stenstrom, 93, of White City, Kansas, passed away on March 7, 2024, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, Kansas.

Peggy was born February 26, 1931, and raised west of White City along the “mighty Mulberry creek” as she called it. 

She said her father told her to be careful of the people that lived east of town, but she found Larkin and was happily married for 61 years. They were married at St. Rose Catholic Church in Council Grove on May 29, 1954.

Peggy was a dedicated teacher. She began her teaching career in a two room school house in Skiddy, Kansas. Peggy eventually graduated from Emporia State Teachers college and earned her Master’s through evening and weekend classes. 

She moved on to teach in White City focusing mainly the on 6th, 7th and 8th grade, usually teaching math and science.

She loved the times with Larkin in Idaho when he served in the Air Force. It was a difficult decision for them to leave the service and Idaho, but they did when Larkin was needed at home on the farm. She embraced teaching during the day and helping on the farm during evening and weekends when needed and always during the summer. When she retired from teaching they continued to farm until they retired in 2011, when Larkin’s health would not allow them to continue. She stayed by Larkin every day when he was moved to a care facility until his passing in 2016.

She was an avid card player and loved to garden and mow. She was always anxious for spring when she could plant her flowers and enjoy them from her back porch. She always had a black dog at her side as her companion. She loved her travels with her family and always felt like a princess when on a cruise ship.

Peggy’s greatest joy was her family. No matter what was going on at school or on the farm, she was always there for her family. She loved hunting season when “her boys” were always there for a few days to spoil and brought unbelievable joy to Christmas when she could host and cook for everyone on Christmas Eve. When her birthday rolled around her preference was to prepare a meal for her family, as they were the gift she loved the most.

She is survived by her two sons, Dr. Mark Stenstrom and his wife Debra of Junction City, Kansas and Dr. Mike Stenstrom and his wife Dr. Kristol of Shawnee, Kansas; five grandchildren, Jeremy Stenstrom and his wife Jamie, Megan Stenstrom, Sofia Stenstrom, Arik Stenstrom, and Kjell Stenstrom; three great-grandchildren, Grayson Stenstrom, Gehrig Stenstrom, and Grisham Stenstrom.

Peggy was preceded by her loving husband and her parents.

A visitation will take place at the Johnson Funeral Home, Wednesday, March 13, 2024, 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. followed by a rosary from 6:30 - 7:00 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church on Thursday, March 14, 2024, 10:30 a.m. officiated by Fr. Frank Coady.

The committal service will be on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at the White City Cemetery, White City, Kansas officiated by Fr. Kerry Ninemire.

Memorial contributions are suggested to be given to the White City Public Library, 111 E MacKenzie St, White City, KS 66872.

Joseph Lee "Joe" Beatty, 65, of Junction City, Kansas was lifted to his heavenly Father on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. Cremation has taken place.

Joseph Lee Beatty was born January 18, 1958, to CSM (Ret.) Samual Junior Beatty and Virginia Lee Beatty in Hannibal, Missouri.

Joe was a busy and well-known man around Junction City. He was a carpenter for many years working in Geary County and contract work on Fort Riley. He also worked in the body shop at Jim Clark Chevrolet. A career that led him to opening and owning a body shop in Junction City. Joe's meticulous eye for detail was seen in both careers he chose.

Joe will always be remembered for his constant and infectious smile and laughter. When not busy working, Joe enjoyed music, fishing, playing cards and entertaining his many friends and family members a barbeques. Joe was continually active in the community as the Vice Commander of The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 45 and a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles.

Joseph is survived by his mother, Virginia Beatty of Junction City; daughter, Brandie Danner; grandson, Bobby Beatty, Jr.; two brothers, George and Mark Beatty of Junction City; one sister, Virginia (Beatty) Roberts; two nieces, Megan and Chelsea; nephew, Shawn Roberts; countless friends and extended family.

Joe is proceeded in death by his father, Samual Beatty; son, Bobby Beatty, Sr., and wife, Vickie J. Downey.

A service will be Friday, March 22, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery officiated by Pastor Will Ravenstein. Following the service at 1:00 p.m., the family and The Sons of the American Legion invite everyone to a Celebration of Life honoring Joe at the American Legion Post 45, 201 E. 4th Street, Junction City, Kansas.
