WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A retired firefighter who is charged with threatening to kidnap and kill the mayor of Wichita because he was upset about the city’s mask ordinance had been texting an acquaintance on the city council for more than a month before his arrest, newly released court records show.

The document were released Tuesday in the case against 59-year-old Meredith Dowty, who was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-kansas-wichita-topeka-13c2ec68539f8ba62d0237d83a94fbb4">charged</a>&nbsp;last week three counts of criminal threat. They say Wichita City Council member James Clendenin started receiving texts from Dowty on Sept. 9, when Dowty wrote that he wanted to know where the mayor eats, sleeps and buys food and gas.

Clendenin, who voted against the mask mandate, said Dowty might have felt they were “kindred spirits” because of his stance.

Court documents say Dowty also texted about people needing to be “hung by their necks” on Sept. 24 and then described the mayor as “traitorous” in a Sept. 25 message. Clendenin said he didn’t feel the conversation went beyond “venting” until Oct. 16, when Dowty allegedly wrote that the “Mayor and all those who bankrupt us” are “viable targets for elimination.”

That’s when he reported the messages to police. Dowty said Clendenin is his friend and that he didn’t mean the texts as threats, court document say.

Man charged in threat over masks had been texting councilman

STAFFORD COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple charges after a drug bust on a rural Kansas home.

During the course that investigation in Stafford County it was discovered that an individual may be in possession of drugs and unlawful weapons and a search warrant was obtained for a residence in rural northwestern Stafford County, according to Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

Just after 1p.m. Tuesday,&nbsp; multiple law enforcement agencies arrived at 1331 NW. 80th Avenue in Stafford County and executed the warrant. Barton County deputies participated at the request of Stafford County officials.

Law enforcement seized suspected heroin, marijuana and what are believed to be multiple full automatic firearms. A sawed-off shotgun was also located. No federal paperwork was located for the automatic weapons. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has been notified, according to Bellendir.

Deputies arrested 32-year-old Allen E. Standish on requested charges of distribution of marijuana, criminal use of a firearm while addicted to drugs, criminal use of a firearm and possession of methamphetamine. 

Standish is being held in lieu of a $50,000 bond on that case. In a related incident from the day before Standish was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer when he allegedly swerved his vehicle at a detective conducting surveillance operations. He is being held on an additional $20,000 bond related to that charge, according to Bellendir.

Tara Jackson's attorney, Gary Nelson, also described the deaths of 14-year-old Logan Jackson and 12-year-old Austin Jackson as “traumatic" in a statement released Wednesday. He asked for privacy “during the next very few hard few weeks and months that Tara and her family have ahead of them."

The Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office said she went to the home of Donny Ray Jackson Jr., 40, on Saturday with the children's paternal grandmother after one of the siblings didn't show up for a soccer game. They found one of the boys dead, and law enforcement then discovered the other body.

The boys' younger sisters, 3-year-old Aven Jackson and 7-year-old Nora Jackson, were found unharmed near Erick, Oklahoma, after a massive search. And their father was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-news-oklahoma-kansas-leavenworth-4f619ac3b5fc3d46e2030cae5fb462f0">charged&nbsp;</a>Tuesday with capital murder and two alternative counts of first-degree murder.

Nelson said there are “a lot of unanswered questions" regarding what happened the day of the killing and in the preceding months. But he said he couldn't answer further questions because the investigation is ongoing.

Mother of slain Kan. boys expresses thanks, asks for privacy

LEAVENWORTH COUNTY, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas man accused of killing his two sons and taking his two daughters from their home before being stopped in Oklahoma was charged Tuesday with capital murder in the boys’ deaths.

Donny Ray Jackson Jr., 40, was also charged Tuesday with two alternative counts of first-degree murder, Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said at a news conference.

The capital murder count covers both boys’ deaths and, if Jackson is convicted, could result either in the death penalty or life in prison without parole. Thompson said his office is still considering whether to seek the death penalty.

Thompson said he had discussed the charges with the children’s family, who he said were “doing as well as can be expected.”

Law enforcement officers went to the family home&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-news-kansas-leavenworth-c03f7c571db80021218b3f96f4b21c72">Saturday afternoon</a>&nbsp;in Leavenworth after one of the siblings didn’t show up for a soccer game. The bodies of 14-year-old Logan Jackson and 12-year-old Austin Jackson were found and their two younger sisters, 3-year-old Aven Jackson and 7-year-old Nora Jackson, were missing.

After an Amber Alert was issued, Jackson was arrested Saturday night near Erick, Oklahoma, and the girls were returned to their family.

Jackson remained jailed in Beckham County, Oklahoma, Tuesday awaiting extradition proceedings.

Thompson declined to discuss any details of the case, including a possible motive, how the boys were killed or where Jackson might have been heading when he was stopped.

“In fairness to the justice system, the defendant has a right to have the facts presented to a jury and we would hate to taint that,” he said in an interview.

There are no charges related to the girls’ abduction because law enforcement is seeking to determine whether Jackson had legal custody of the children when they were taken from the home, authorities said.

Maj. James Sherley, of the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Department, said Monday that Jackson and his wife were&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-us-news-4eda8ef4a3153d355abc27941dd89ad4">going through a divorce</a>&nbsp;and Donny Jackson had “on-again, off-again access to the children.”

Gary Nelson, the attorney handling the divorce for the children’s mother, Tara Jackson, didn’t immediately respond to an email message from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Jackson was stopped in Oklahoma after a truck driver notified Beckham County authorities that he was following a car with tags mentioned in the Amber Alert.

Officer Jonathan Burrow, with the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, said he spotted the car a short time later and was able to pull over the driver and call for backup, KFOR-TV&nbsp;<a href="https://kfor.com/news/national/kansas-man-accused-of-murder-kidnapping-in-oklahoma-jail-awaiting-extradition/" target="_blank">reported</a>.

“I feel happy that the girls are safe. That was my main thing the day that it happened,” Burrow said.

Just after 5p.m. Monday,&nbsp;the United States Marshals Service responded to a residence in the 500 block of SE Lamar Street in Topeka on a report of a suspect with multiple felony warrants who they had been trying to locate, according to Topeka Lt. John Trimble.

After making multiple attempts to speak with the suspect identified as Logan Bartley, 21, Topeka, the suspect barricaded himself inside a home.

At the request of the US Marshals Service, the Topeka Police Department’s Crisis Negotiators and Response Team responded to the scene and made contact with Bartley.

After over 3 hours, negotiators were able to peacefully talk him out of the home. Officers then took Bartley into custody without incident at around 8:30 p.m.

Bartley was later arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault, Felony Obstruction, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and 2 Felony Warrants, according to Trimble. He has a previous theft conviction from 2018, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

The bodies of 14-year-old Logan Jackson and 12-year-old Austin Jackson were then found — one by the family and the other by law enforcement. Sherley declined to release the cause of death or comment on motive.

An Amber Alert was issued for their younger sisters, 3-year-old Aven Jackson and 7-year-old Nora Jackson. A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper spotted the girls with Jackson after pulling over his car near Kansas’ border with Oklahoma for a traffic infraction shortly before the discovery of the boys’ bodies. That helped law enforcement expand the Amber Alert, which Sherley said worked “flawlessly” and led to a flood of tips.

Jackson was arrested later that night near Erick, Oklahoma. The girls were taken from him unharmed and were returned to their mother over the weekend. Sherley said he didn’t know where Jackson was headed.

Jackson is jailed in Oklahoma while awaiting extradition to Kansas. Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said he is waiting for the investigation to be complete before making a charging decision. He said he didn’t know whether Jackson had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Marisa Clausen, who <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-for-tara-and-the-jackson-girls">created a GoFundMe </a>account to support the children’s mother, whom she identified as Tara Jackson, declined an interview request and asked that the family be given privacy, The Wichita Eagle&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas.com/news/local/crime/article246706991.html" target="_blank">reports</a>. She didn’t immediately reply to a message from The Associated Press.

The next status hearing in the couple’s divorce had been scheduled for Nov. 12, court records show.

The Jackson girls have been recovered and the suspect detained, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol located the suspect vehicle near Erick, Oklahoma.&nbsp; Troopers detained Donny Jackson and the kids were recovered.&nbsp;

Authorities released no additional details.

LEAVENWORTH COUNTY—Authorities issued an Amber Alert Saturday afternoon for two girls in Kansas.

The KBI is looking for 7-year-old Nora Jackson and 3-year-old Aven Jackson. They were last seen in the 14900 block of Hillside Road in Leavenworth.

The 911 call that began this incident was made by an adult that discovered the homicide scene, so the actual time of the abduction and homicide is unknown, according to the KBI.

At 4:30pm, we learned that the Kansas Highway Patrol made an unrelated car stop on the suspect’s vehicle on Highway 169 near the OK border today at approximately 12:35 p.m.  The abducted children were in the vehicle.  It is now believed Jackson may be traveling in Oklahoma, Texas or Arkansas.

At 5:05p.m., the Arkansas State Police agreed to launch an Arkansas AMBER Alert to assist in the recovery of the abducted children, due to the proximal sighting at the OK / KS border.

Nora has blonde-brown shoulder-length hair, a slender build and blue or hazel eyes. It's unknown what she was last seen wearing. Aven also has blonde hair, blue eyes and a slender build.

Just after 1p.m. Saturday, the Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office responded to a call in the 14900 block of Hillside and deputies located a two deceased boys in a home and the girls were mising, according to a media release.

The girls' father, Donny Jackson, is suspected in the abduction. Donny Jackson, 40, is 5-foot-11 and weighs 190 pounds. He has long brown hair with a slight red color and blue eyes. He also has a full beard.&nbsp;

There is no known direction of travel, but&nbsp; Jackson drives a black 2008 Honda Accord with Kansas license 266MXB.

 </figure>LEAVENWORTH COUNTY—Authorities issued an Amber Alert Saturday afternoon for two girls in Kansas.The KBI is looking for 7-year-old Nora Jackson and 3-year-old Aven Jackson. They were last seen in the 14900 block of Hillside Road in Leavenworth.The 911 call that began this incident was made by an adult that discovered the homicide scene, so the actual time of the abduction and homicide is unknown, according to the KBI.At 4:30pm, we learned that the Kansas Highway Patrol made an unrelated car stop on the suspect’s vehicle on Highway 169 near the OK border today at approximately 12:35 p.m. The abducted children were in the vehicle. It is now believed Jackson may be traveling in Oklahoma, Texas or Arkansas.At 5:05p.m., the Arkansas State Police agreed to launch an Arkansas AMBER Alert to assist in the recovery of the abducted children, due to the proximal sighting at the OK / KS border.<figure>

Father in Kansas Amber Alert remains in Oklahoma jail

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas man arrested in connection with a July murder made his first court appearance in the case Friday.

Lawrence Bailey, 33, Wichita, was charged with&nbsp;1st degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery, and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.  

In a separate case, Bailey is charged with aggravated burglary, aggravated kidnapping, 2 counts of kidnapping, and 2 counts of aggravated robbery, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

On July 2, a citizen reported a possible criminal homicide occurring at a home in the 800 block of South San Pablo in Wichita, according to Officer Charley Davidson.

Police began investigating and on Monday, July 6, they located the body of 47-year-old Roy Hayden of Wichita inside a vehicle in the 1500 block of North Broadway.

Through further investigation, it was determined that Hayden’s death was related to the information received of the criminal homicide on San Pablo, and three other suspects Ariana Cook 21, <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20025626">Matthew Small, </a>35, and&nbsp;19-year-old <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20067589">Carlos Delgado </a>all of Wichita were involved, according to Officer Davidson.&nbsp; Police arrested the other three suspects in September.

Police booked Bailey early Thursday. He is now being held on a <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=72896">$250,000 bond,</a> according to the district attorney's office.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Small and Delgado also remain in custody in Sedgwick County while Cook was transferred to another facility, according to online jail records.

Bailey has previous convictions for aggravated burglary, theft, aggravated assault and criminal threat, according to the Kan. Dept. of Corrections. His&nbsp;next scheduled court appearance is November 5.

Kansas felon charged for July kidnapping, murder

TOPEKA — Three members of the Sedgwick County Commission on Sunday denounced Republican colleague Michael O’Donnell after the <a href="https://www.kansas.com/article246669242.html">Wichita Eagle published a secret recording</a>
 of O’Donnell, a Wichita city councilman and a Kansas House member 
plotting to deceive the public about their role in a false campaign 
video accusing a Democratic candidate for mayor of sexual harassment.

Commissioners Lacey Cruse,
 David Dennis and Jim Howell made clear O’Donnell’s statements on the 
45-minute recording, including political advice to attack first and 
“avoid the truth at all expense,” made it impossible for him to continue
 serving the county.

In the at-times chaotic 
recording, made shortly before the November 2019 mayoral election and 
released to the public due to a pending lawsuit, O’Donnell said it might
 be possible to blame their sleazy campaign attack on a former Kansas 
Republican Party chairman. He also declared such coverups to be 
“standard political operations.” He expressed admiration for the good 
sense of Democrats to betray each other quietly. And, he said, there 
wasn’t a pro-life person unhappy with the assassination a decade ago of 
Wichita abortion doctor George Tiller.

“Michael O’Donnell has 
proven to be a risk and major liability to Sedgwick County,” said Cruse,
 a Democrat. “I’m not shocked by what we all heard on this tape because I
 have witnessed this type of unethical behavior for almost two years. 
I’m not willing to get in line and be quiet. This behavior is not okay 
and those who choose to be silent, those who are not willing to speak 
out about this publicly, are part of the problem.”

Howell, the GOP chairman 
of the county commission, went further and urged O’Donnell, Wichita City
 Councilman James Clendenin and Kansas House Rep. Michael Capps to 
immediately resign from public office.

“The people of Sedgwick 
county deserve representation that is ethical, above reproach and 
honest,” Howell said. “The actions of these men in the<a href="https://www.kwch.com/2020/08/28/man-behind-protect-wichita-girls-video-breaks-silence/"> ‘Protect Wichita Girls’ scandal</a> is reprehensible and embarrassing to our community.”

So far, the three Wichita 
politicians have chosen to cling to their jobs. O’Donnell is seeking 
re-election to the county commission on Nov. 3. In August, Wichita 
voters decided to end Capps’ career in the Kansas House effective in 
January. Capps was hammered in the GOP primary, receiving just 25% of 
the vote. Clendenin, a member of the city council since 2011, isn’t on 
the 2020 ballot.

In the recording, the 
three politicians and the producer of the video agreed to blame Sedgwick
 County Republican Party chairman Dalton Glasscock for orchestrating the
 commercial. They considered and rejected the idea of also fingering 
Kelly Arnold, who has served as Sedgwick County’s clerk since 2008 and 
was the Kansas GOP chairman from 2013 to 2019.

The malicious video, 
posted to Facebook and YouTube, featured unidentified women silhouetted 
against a menacing background who alleged without evidence sexual 
harassment by state legislators. The target was then-Democratic mayoral 
candidate Brandon Whipple, who by implication was accused of engaging in
 misconduct as a member of the Kansas House. In closing moments of the 
video, the women say, “Stop Brandon Whipple.”

The video was apparently 
viewed more than 400,000 times. It was traced to a New Mexico shadow 
company, Protect Wichita’s Girls LLC, that was linked to Capps.

Whipple, who said the 
video was part of a political misinformation campaign, easily won the 
November 2019 election. He defeated incumbent Republican Mayor Jeff 
Longwell by more than 10 percentage points. Longwell’s re-election was 
hampered by reports he intervened to award the new water plant contract 
for the state’s largest city to his political supporters and friends.

Shortly after the video 
began appearing online in October 2019, Whipple filed a lawsuit against 
video producer Matthew Colborn and two John Does. Colborn, who recorded 
the four-person conversation in which the coverup and misdirection was 
mapped out, was dropped from the suit in exchange for turning over the 
audio recording and other evidence to Whipple’s lawyers. The lawsuit has
 been amended to target O’Donnell, Clendenin and Capps.

Michael
 Shultz, the Wichita attorney for Colborn, said his client regretted 
participating in the underhanded assault and learned painful lessons 
about politics, relationships and business. Colborn is being scapegoated
 in the public eye by the scandal, Schultz said.

“Matthew
 was at the meeting where Michael O’Donnell, James Clendenin and Michael
 Capps planned to push the blame for this ad onto Dalton Glasscock and 
others,” Schultz said. “To protect himself, he recorded that 
conversation. We are releasing that recording now to demonstrate the 
accuracy of what Matthew has now said and to try and stop those who 
continue to attack him.”

The meeting that produced 
the secret recording was called to help Capps prepare for a 2019 radio 
interview on the video controversy with Wichita talk show host John 
Whitmer, a former Republican state legislator. Capps and O’Donnell 
sounded confident Whitmer would be sympathetic to their claims, 
asserting Whitmer was opposed to election of a Democrat as mayor and had
 a strong dislike for Glasscock.

“John, though, wants Dalton’s head. He doesn’t know how to hunt. He just wants to collect,” Capps said on the recording.

Capps, who was angry 
Glasscock had previously called for his resignation, could be heard on 
the recording practicing his talking points in advance of the radio 
interview, including: “Let me be clear to your listeners and to you 
John. I had nothing to do with the production of this video.”

O’Donnell advised Capps to
 claim firsthand knowledge that both Glasscock and Arnold spoke of plans
 designed to conceal information about who was responsible for the 
video. O’Donnell said linking the pair would deflect damage to the 
Sedgwick County Republican Party, because it would appear “more of a 
conspiracy by the party to cover itself.”

Later in the conversation,
 the group decided Arnold was too influential among Sedgwick County 
Republicans to accuse of misconduct. Backlash from Arnold could get out 
of hand, so they agreed Glasscock would be framed alone. They also 
agreed it would be useful to place responsibility at Glasscock’s feet if
 the Republican mayor lost the campaign to Whipple.

“Nobody questions Kelly 
(Arnold) being an ultra-party guy, a conservative,” O’Donnell said. “I 
just think naming him in this deal will bring added scrutiny that we, 
particularly James (Clendenin) and I don’t need.”

Clendenin, the Wichita 
city council member, said labeling Arnold as a responsible party could 
open an unsavory two-front political conflict. He also predicted 
maneuvering their way out of the Whipple video scandal by boxing in 
Glasscock wouldn’t “go as smoothly as we’re talking about it right now.”

“This is not an ideal 
narrative,” Capps said. “I’m going to accept the fact that it is not. 
But I’m also looking at this purely from a business/political 
perspective. That it’s either our necks or his.”

“I’m always learned in 
politics,” O’Donnell said, “it’s always avoid the truth at all expense. 
Right? And, just go on the attack.”

O’Donnell at several 
points in the recording recommended they each be vague when pointing 
fingers at other people, because specifics could come back to haunt them
 if a lawsuit went to the discovery stage or a trial.

In 2018, O’Donnell was 
indicted on federal charges that included 23 counts of wire fraud and 
three counts of money laundering. The allegations of campaign finance 
misconduct related to his campaign for the Kansas Senate and O’Donnell’s
 decision to write a series of checks from a campaign account to 
friends. He was acquitted last year of 21 counts and the jury couldn’t 
reach a verdict on five counts. He described the trial as the worst 
experience of his life.

“I don’t think we’re all 
culpable like for a lawsuit or something,” O’Donnell said on the audio 
recording, “but what I think — I just don’t ever want it to get into 
discovery mode.”

The
 Kansas Democratic Party jumped into the fray with a photograph of 
O’Donnell standing next to U.S. Rep. Roger Marshall, a Republican in a 
tight race for U.S. Senate against Democratic Kansas Sen. Barbara 
Bollier.

“What
 games are Roger Marshall and Michael O’Donnell playing?” the Democrats 
claimed Kansans deserved to know. “Does Roger Marshall stand by his 
‘friend’ Michael O’Donnell’s actions?”

As if there wasn’t enough drama in Whipple’s life, a Wichita musician and retired firefighter was <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/10/17/us/wichita-kansas-mayor-mask-arrest-trnd/index.html">arrested Oct. 16 on suspicion of threatening to kidnap and kill the mayor</a> due to frustration with the city’s COVID-19 mask ordinance.

Resignation demands after recording exposes three Wichita politicians

KANSAS CITY(AP) — Demonstrators who set up tents outside City Hall in Kansas City three weeks ago to demand police reform after an officer placed his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/arrests-kansas-city-kansas-archive-05e0c8aadf22e1f2739d8f45c6baf148">knee&nbsp;</a>on the back of a pregnant Black women have announced a temporary end to their encampment.

&nbsp;Black Rainbow, one of the groups that organized the occupation, announced on on social media they’d declared a “ceasefire" after beginning talks with public officials about divesting funds from law enforcement.

Ryan Sorrel, a leader with Black Rainbow, said the demonstrators will return if they don't see the changes they want.

The demonstration had demanded that city leaders fire the officer seen in a video kneeling on the pregnant woman, terminate Chief of Police Rick Smith and vow to divest 50% of the police force's budget.

Sorrel said demonstrators began talking with city council members a few days ago about specific spaces where public safety funds and responsibilities, such as health crises and parking tickets, could be moved away from the police department.

“We saw this as a very strategic move in order to not absolve all of our resources,” Sorrel said.

Mayor Quinton Lucas said in a statement Saturday that he’s been meeting with such groups since May and planned to continue to do so in an effort to build trust.

“While we will have our disagreements, all of us in Kansas City must work together to see better days ahead,” he said.

“A Mystery In 1868” – Part 1 of 3

	Gaylynn Childs, retired Executive Director of the Geary County Historical Society (GCHS), researched and wrote about a lynching in August 1868 of Geary County pioneer Thomas M. Reynolds. The two articles she wrote were published in The Daily Union newspaper in August of 2011. One of her sources came from genealogical research done by Bill Armond Miller, the great-great grandson of Thomas Reynolds, who sent information to the GCHS. William Bradley, who was a hired hand for Reynolds and later married widow Reynolds, wrote a letter to the children and grandchildren of Thomas Reynolds describing the circumstances surrounding the death of their father or grandfather, Thomas Marcus Reynolds. This is some of what was in that letter.

	“On Saturday morning, August 22, 1868, Thomas Reynolds started out for Mitchell’s Mill to deliver 1,800 head of cattle to a cattle drover named William Davis. He was accompanied by his two young sons, who were 10 and 14 years of age. 

	I (William Bradley) remained at home to repair some fence and then go to Junction City for ranch supplies. The two boys came home about two o’clock in the afternoon and said their father had told them to come home to help with the chores.  When I got to Junction City, I met Reynolds, who was just going into the bank with the receipts of his sale. When we both returned home and were sitting down to supper, a stranger came to the door.  When Reynolds went to meet him, the stranger asked if he had some cattle for sale.  Reynolds stated he had sold them that day and delivered them.  The stranger then wanted to know who bought them and where they were camped?  Reynolds told him he thought William Davis and his men were expecting to stay at Mitchell’s Mill that night.  The stranger wanted to know if Reynolds thought Davis would sell the cattle?  He also asked Reynolds to go with him to Mitchell’s Mill.

	After eating supper, they left about eight o’clock.  Along in the night, Reynolds’ horse came home without him.  When I went out to do the morning milking, I found the horse at the gate and the saddle was covered with blood.  I rushed to the house to tell Mrs. Reynolds and then went to arouse the neighbors.  A group of eight or ten of us set out at once to search for Tom.  We headed for Mitchell’s Mill.  On the way we met another neighbor named Fox Booth, who told us he had discovered the body of Tom Reynolds hanging from a tree beside the road near Dry Creek”.

	In Part 1, it was learned that Thomas Marcus Reynolds had been hung from a tree and found dead. The consensus of opinion within the family of Thomas Reynolds about his death was that Thomas was killed as a result of his political views.  A written and signed deposition found among the papers of Samuel Orr at the time of his own death in 1900 revealed who had really been responsible for the death of Thomas Reynolds.  Orr was a prominent territorial settler and community leader in Junction City and Davis (Geary) County. Orr stated that “Thomas Reynolds was hanged by neighbors, who were all old Union soldiers.”  Or was that the reason?

	 “Following an investigation, rewards were offered and a grand jury called.  The case was argued on street corners and at gathering places.  George W. Martin, editor of the Union newspaper and self-appointed community watchdog for truth and justice, published the verdict of the jury.  The final decision of the jury was that Thomas Reynolds was found suspended from the limb of a tree by a part of his bridle rein by some person or persons unknown to the jury.”  (Union January 9, 1869)

	George Martin kept the case before the public for the next two years. During that time Reynolds’ family sent for two detectives from St. Louis to find the real culprits. On July 31, 1870, the Union noted the arrest of a local man, John Sanderson, for stealing government horses.  Sanderson was the oldest of three brothers who were the sons of William and Jane Sanderson. The Sanderson’s had settled in the Smoky Hill Township just south of Junction City near the bend of the river.

	Within a day or two after that last arrest, John’s brother, Jonathan secured his release by posting his $4,000 bond.  On the following Saturday morning, John returned to town to retrieve his horse, which had been taken from him at the time of his arrest and retained as part of the bond.  Sanderson then contacted a man named Tucker near Humboldt Creek, who agreed to furnish bond for the horse.  When they returned to town, a man by the name of  Tucker, who was also suspected of being a horse thief, made a “sworn confession” in writing charging John Sanderson and another party as the murderers of Thomas Marcus Reynolds.

	A warrant was issued for the arrest of Sanderson and his partner. Sheriff R.C. Whitney, a deputy U.S. Marshal and young Jimmy Reynolds, who was a son of the murdered man, went out to Sanderson’s homestead to arrest him.  A gun battle resulted in which young Reynolds and White were wounded.  John Sanderson made an escape into the brush”.

SEDGWICK COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal shooting at an after-hours club. 

Costella Reed, 41, of Wichita died after being shot early Saturday at the Apple Lounge in the 3200 Block of north Broadway in Wichita. 

Police say he was inside the club when a disturbance broke out. One shot was fired and Reed was hit. Police say it was not a random shooting. The suspect has not been arrested.

Deadrian Burns, 30, Wichita, is charged with&nbsp;aggravated kidnapping, 2 counts of aggravated battery, 2 counts of aggravated domestic battery, aggravated endangering a child, criminal threat, and a misdemeanor count of battery, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Just after 11:30 p.m. October 18, police responded to an assault call at a residence in the 5100 block of East New Jersey Drive in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson. 

Upon arrival, officers located 30-year-old Deadrian Burns physically fighting with a 44-year-old man outside of the residence. 

Police also contacted a 25-year-old&nbsp; woman after she locked herself in a vehicle with her two-month-old son. EMS transported the 25-year-old and her 2-month-old to a local hospital with serious injuries, according to Davidson.

The investigation revealed that Burns, his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend, and her 44-year-old family member were at the residence celebrating a birthday. Burns and the 44-year-old man left together to go to a store. While at the store, they got into a verbal argument, and the 44-year-old left, leaving Burns behind. Burns walked back to the residence and assaulted the 25-year-old woman, threatened her, and strangled her to the point of unconsciousness. He also dropped the 2-month-old on the ground outside.

Burns then called the 44-year-old and threatened to harm the 25-year-old if he did not return to the house. When he arrived, the two physically fought while the woman locked herself in a vehicle and called 911.

Shortly after 9:00 a.m. Friday, deputies were sent to 7910 E 109th Street North in rural Sedgwick County to assist EMS, according to Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Benjamin Blick.

 When they arrived they found a Slankard with critical injuries. 

EMS transported her to Via Christi St. Francis and she later died of her injuries. 

The victim’s husband Craig Johnston, 42, was transported to Sheriff Investigations and later booked on requested charges of Second Degree Murder and violations of the Offender Registration Act, according to Blick.&nbsp;

 Johnston has a previous conviction from Illinois in 1997 for aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim between the age of 13-16, according to the Offender Registry.

KANSAS CITY (AP) — A decomposing body that a 10-year-old boy found in July in a creek was a missing Kansas City social worker, authorities say.

Police spokesman Sgt. Jake Becchina said Friday that an FBI lab had confirmed that the remains are those of 39-year-old Marina Bischoff. She was last seen leaving a Kansas City police station in May. Police said Bischoff had been arrested the night before on suspicion of driving while impaired and leaving the scene of a crash.

No foul play is suspected, but the final cause of death has yet to be determined. The county medical examiner is still conducting a final exam, Becchina said.

Police: Body found by boy in KC creek was missing woman

MONTGOMERY COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place Friday afternoon in rural Montgomery County.

Just before 1 p.m.Friday, a victim called 911 to report being robbed at gunpoint at the Regal Inn in Coffeyville, according to a media release from the KBI.

 At approximately 1:15 p.m., a KHP trooper observed a vehicle near 3600 Road, in Independence, Kan., that matched the vehicle connected to the robbery. He and another KHP trooper who responded to assist, initiated a car stop on the silver 2006 Chrysler Town and Country minivan occupied by a female driver and a male passenger.

As the troopers attempted the traffic stop, the male passenger, later identified as 32-year-old Wesley Jordan, of Hot Springs, Ark., fired at the troopers. 

A trooper returned fire and the subjects fled, prompting a police pursuit. Near the intersection of 3600 Rd. and 3900 Road., a deputy from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office intercepted the minivan and fired at Jordan. 

The minivan continued west on 3600 Rd., another 1/4 mile, until it came to a stop. Then a KHP trooper fired at Jordan when he exited the minivan.

Jordan was pronounced deceased at the scene by Montgomery County EMS. No law enforcement officers were injured during this incident.

The driver was a 26-year-old woman from Coffeyville. She was taken into custody for questioning, and was later arrested by the Coffeyville Police Department for charges related to the armed robbery.

The KBI will conduct a thorough and independent investigation into this shooting. Once completed the findings will be turned over to the Montgomery County Attorney for review.

Near the intersection of 3600 Rd. and 3900 Road., a deputy from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office intercepted the minivan and fired at Jordan. The minivan continued west on 3600 Rd., another 1/4 mile, until it came to a stop. Then a KHP trooper fired at Jordan when he exited the minivan.Jordan was pronounced deceased at the scene by Montgomery County EMS. No law enforcement officers were injured during this incident.The driver was a 26-year-old woman from Coffeyville. She was taken into custody for questioning, and was later arrested by the Coffeyville Police Department for charges related to the armed robbery.The KBI will conduct a thorough and independent investigation into this shooting. Once completed the findings will be turned over to the Montgomery County Attorney for review.

KBI: One suspect dead after Kan. officer-involved shooting

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating criminal homicide at a Wichita motel.

Just after 10 a.m.Thursday, police responded to a call of an unresponsive in a room at the Budget Motel in the 1300 block of South Broadway in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

&nbsp;Officers located a woman later identified as 33-year-old Stephanie Duran of Wichita unresponsive and with injuries to her body.&nbsp; She was pronounced deceased on the scene, according to Davidson.

A staff member of the motel located Duran in the room and called the police.

Investigators are&nbsp; working to determine the circumstances of what occurred and have not reported an arrest.

This is the second homicide in Wichita over the past 24-hours.

Just after 10p.m. Thursday Marquell Nolan, 31, Wichita, died at local hospital after he was shot at a youth football game&nbsp;at Stryker Sports Complex, 2999 N Greenwich Road in Wichita. Police have not reported an arrest in this case.

Police ID Kan. woman who died in motel room murder

SALINA – Two suspects have been charged with attempted capital murder in connection with an August incident in Saline County that included shooting and injuring a Salina police officer, according to Attorney General Derek Schmidt.

Schmidt filed criminal charges against Shawn Patrick Humphrey, 37, Wichita, and Adam Drew Humphrey, 36, Leavenworth. The incident took place during an attempted traffic stop near Salina. In addition to the officer who was shot and injured, one additional Salina police officer and a Saline County sheriff’s deputy were shot at, but were uninjured.

The charges were filed Friday and arrest warrants executed. Shawn Patrick Humphrey is being held in the Saline County jail, while Adam Drew Humphrey is being held in the Shawnee County jail.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;The case is being prosecuted by the Kansas Attorney General’s Office at the request of the Saline County Attorney.

2 charged with attempted murder in shooting Salina officer

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a criminal homicide and have arrested a fourth suspect identified as&nbsp;33- year-old Lawrence Bailey of Wichita.

Just after 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, a citizen reported a possible criminal homicide occurring at a home in the 800 block of South San Pablo in Wichita, according to Officer Charley Davidson.

Bailey is being held on requested charges of 1st-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery and criminal possession of a firearm. Small and Delgado also remain in custody in Sedgwick County while Cook was transferred to another facility, according to online jail records.

 </figure>Through further investigation, it was determined that Hayden’s death was related to the information received of the criminal homicide on San Pablo, and three other suspects Ariana Cook 21, <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20025626">Matthew Small, </a>35, and&nbsp;19-year-old <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20067589">Carlos Delgado </a>all of Wichita were involved, according to Officer Davidson.&nbsp; Police arrested the other three suspects in September.<figure>
