United Way schedules Potato Bar fundraiser

USD 475 has announced that it was a banner weekend for the Junction City High School and H.D. Karns JAG-K programs at the Region 2 Career Development Conference as they qualified a total of 19 students for the JAG-K State Career Development Conference on March 20 in Hays.

As a team, the JCHS two program placed first overall in Topeka, while H.D. Karns claimed second-place honors out of 14 teams. Other highlights included junior Noah Maldonado being named the Region 2 president, while sophomore Jaden Exantus was elected the Region 2 vice president. By placing in the top-3 at regionals, students will now have a chance to qualify for nationals later this month&nbsp;as the top-two placers at the state conference in each division&nbsp;will represent USD 475 in St. Louis, Mo., on April 18-22.&nbsp;

Students qualify for JAG K-State Career Development Conference

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting that sent a man to the hospital in Manhattan.

Just before 2p.m. Sunday, the Riley County Communications Center received several 911 calls reporting shots fired in the 1400 block of Flint Hills Place in Manhattan, according to a media release.

Riley County Police Officers and an officer from the Kansas Highway Patrol responded to the scene and found a male victim, age 53, with two gunshot wounds, one to the right arm and the other to the right leg.

The victim was transported via ambulance to Via Christi and was later transferred to a larger hospital.&nbsp;

Officers were able to set up a perimeter and canvas the area for the suspect. The neighborhood was cleared of police activity around 7:17 PM. The suspect remains at large but we do not believe him to be a threat to the community at this time.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers. &nbsp; Crime stoppers allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a reward of up to $1,000.

RCPD looking for suspect in shooting that sent man to hospital

Society of the 1st Infantry Division Executive Director and former Junction City Commissioner Phyllis Fitzgerald is preparing to move later this year to Collinwood, Tennessee.&nbsp;

She is an active participant and volunteer on many community projects in Junction City, but she and husband, Keith Fitzgerald, plan to make the move in August to be closer to her family. She will continue to serve as the executive director of the Society of the 1st Infantry Division until August, and possibly longer.

Fitzgerald served as mayor of Junction City in 2017 and as a member of the city commission from 2015 to 2020. She has been a resident of Junction City since 1999 and before that during her military career was stationed at Fort Riley from 1989 to 1993. She served with the 1st Infantry Division during Desert Storm.

Street repairs are necessary following the harsh winter. Junction City Manager Allen Dinkel noted every city and county along with KDOT crews are dealing with the challenge. Junction City crews have been buying a lot of material and fixing streets.

Dinkel said a lot of roads have to be addressed. He also noted that the city is getting ready this year to bid out about $1.5 million for&nbsp; mill and overlay work. One project that will receive attention is West 6th Street near the KJCK Radio building.

Dinkel thinks the city is getting to the point where some roads may have to be completely replaced. As the city gets out of its financial crisis that has existed for several years money will be freed up to do projects.

Grant Ave. and Jackson Street were concrete streets that have had "band aids of asphalt" put on top of them, said Dinkel. He noted that some day the city will have to start over, and that will not be a cheap process. There must be planning through it.

Geary County rural firefighters assisted by the Wakefield Rural Fire Department worked a grass fire Sunday on the west side of Milford Lake between Curtis Creek and School Creek.

According to Geary County Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges, approximately 25 acres of grassland burned. There were no injuries or structure damage.

Each week, a report is written by City staff that is to provide information on the activity of the City staff during the past week or to provide information relating to the City. This report is known as the 5/15, however I have heard it called the 5-1-5. So where did the name come from? Actually, a previous manager started this report and 5/15 was the name that was given to it. I once thought it was called that because it is sent at the end of the week, but others say it was called that because it was supposed to take 5 minutes to read and 15 minutes to write each section. Whatever the reason for the name, the report was meant to provide information and it still does that. When I first came here the report was only sent to members of the Governing Body and to the Department Heads. However, over the years the report is now sent to many people. Of course, one thing that has not changed is the name. I like the ring of 5/15 and the name has been embraced by the staff.

Over the past couple of years, the local news media has printed my portion of the report to share with the public. However, the complete report contains information from the City Department Heads. One topic that I have heard some talking about this week is the Animal Shelter. As most know, the shelter is located on North Jackson Street adjacent to the Public Works Department. When I first came to Junction City, the Shelter was operated by Geary County and the City owned the structure and shared in the costs of running the shelter. All staff members were County employees.

In 2020 the County Commission decided to no longer be a part of the Shelter and the operation turned back to the City. Of course, the City had ran the shelter at one time before the County was involved. The employees then became “City” employees, and the Shelter was made part of the Police Department. This of course ties together with the Animal Control staff. Agreements were made with the County Sherriff Office, and the cities of Grandview Plaza and Milford to take animals from those jurisdictions at the Shelter.

Recently, there has been an uptick in the number of animals received. In the month of February, the Shelter received 96 animals. 60 of these were canines, 35 felines and 1 other. 48 of the animals were brought in by the Animal Control Officer (ACO) and the Police Department and 33 were delivered by civilians. There were also Civilian surrenders of their animals. One issue that the shelter has is animals that are dumped at the shelter or just turned loose into the community and then captured by the ACO. Unfortunately, the number of animals increases with deployments of soldiers.

With this number of animals, the shelter is normally more than just full. The shelter also needs to be addressed so that humane treatment can be given to the animals. At the next City Commission, Animal Shelter Director Vanessa Gray will make a presentation about the shelter. One option is a new shelter, but that does come with a price tag. Some of mentioned that a building could be purchased and refurbished. Though that may be an option, issues such as drainage and ventilation have to be considered and spaces for isolating infected or diseased animals are needed. Of course, exercise areas are another consideration. Again, remodeling will have a cost and we will need to weigh what options are the best. Remodeling the present facility may be an option as well, but the goal has to be, to have a shelter that fits the needs of the community along with the treatment of the animals.

This becomes a controversial subject as others feel that animals should be euthanized if they are at the shelter for an extended period of time. As with many City decisions there are many options and opinions. At the end of the day, the goal is to find what is best for Junction City.

Ninth Annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Banquet

Konza Prairie Community Health Center has announced that Dustie Samuels, DO, has joined the organization as medical director for its clinics in Junction City, Manhattan, and Chapman.

Dr. Samuels graduated from Council Grove High School and received health education in emergency medicine from Kansas community colleges before graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutritional Sciences from Kansas State University. She received her degree in Osteopathic Medicine from Lincoln Memorial University, DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harrogate, Tennessee, and conducted her residency at the Wichita Center for Graduate Medical Education in Wichita, KS.

Dr. Samuels is a board-certified family medicine physician who comes to Konza from McPherson Center for Health where she provided full-spectrum primary care for patients of all ages. She is a member of the American Osteopathic Association and American Academy of Family Physicians.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Samuels also serves as adjunct clinical faculty at Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Wichita. She also has experience as an instructor and provider in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Basic Life Support and Pediatric Life Support.

Founded in 1995, Konza Prairie Community Health Center is a locally-owned, not-for-profit community health center with clinics in Junction City, Manhattan, and Chapman. Junction City Parks and Recreation has ongoing multiple efforts. They include work with Quality Play for All on upgrades to Fifth Street Park including a fitness court, picnic shelter and two drinking fountains that will be completed in the May - June time frame.

According to Parks and Recreation Director Josh Gray, indoor soccer was a success at Spin City where more than 100 children participated.&nbsp;

There are plans for a flag football league running from March 19th to May 4th for youth ages 5-11. This will be 5 on 5 following NFL flag football rules. Sign up at junctioncity-ks.gov.

There will be a Spring Break Skate at Spin City, 915 South Washington,&nbsp; on March 11th, 13th and 15th. Admission will be $7.

Summer lifeguards are needed for the Municipal Swimming Pool. They must be ages 15 and up. For applicants there will be a $20 pre-test fee and classes will be held at the YMCA. Clerks are also needed to help run the concession stand and the basket room. Those applicants must be 14 and up. Apply at junctioncity-ks.gov.

Parks and Recreation works to provide opportunities

The Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad has announced its most ambitious operating schedule in the railroad’s 31-year history. The regular 2024 schedule will open on April 10, with some dinner trains and excursions scheduled&nbsp;during the KSU/KU Spring Breaks&nbsp;in March.&nbsp;

A&amp;SV President and General Manager Ross Boelling said that the railroad will run as many as&nbsp;300&nbsp;trains this year, a number that includes 33 dinner trains, a possible 42 school charters, and an expanded 168-train excursion schedule. There will be two special events on the schedule: a return of the&nbsp;Great Pumpkin Patch Express&nbsp;Peanuts train in October and the railroad’s rapidly growing Christmas holiday tradition, the&nbsp;Cowtown Santa Express&nbsp;in November and December.

“We’ve never run this many trains before,” Boelling commented, “but last season, we learned that there is a great demand for what we do among people from an increasing geographical area.&nbsp;

Boelling noted that the railroad enjoyed a&nbsp;42&nbsp;percent increase in ridership in 2023, and that the A&amp;SV attracted passengers from over half of the communities in Kansas. But the railroad has increasingly attracted tourists from major metropolitan areas, including Wichita, Kansas City, Omaha, and Lincoln. He added that the A&amp;SV also attracted passengers from 42 states and seven foreign countries last year.

“Our passengers do more than just ride trains,” Boelling said. “On our trains, passengers learn how railroads built Kansas’ agriculture-oriented economy, and how so many Kansas towns and cities were directly established by the railroads. "

The railroad’s&nbsp;Smoky Valley Limited&nbsp;dinner train schedule has been greatly expanded for 2024, with more special themed trains featuring regional caterers and expanded menus. The A&amp;SV’s “Dining Car Heritage Series” returns in 2024, featuring menu items from the heyday of passenger train travel, when some of America’s finest dining was in railroad dining cars. The menus were researched by railroad historian Kevin Bailey, and the menus are being recreated by local caterer Lucinda Kohman.&nbsp;

Boelling said the&nbsp;Smoky Valley Limited&nbsp;is running more trains centered around holidays and special events.&nbsp;

Boelling said the schedule will feature more runs of the&nbsp;Flint Hills Express, the A&amp;SV’s excursion train, and the&nbsp;Meadowlark Flyer, the railroad’s school charter. Excursion trains will begin running in April on a Wednesday through Sunday schedule. School charters will run on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Excursion trains will run through September, Boelling said.

The addition of special event trains was a major draw for the railroad last year. The Peanuts-oriented&nbsp;Great Pumpkin Patch Express&nbsp;drew 1,658 passengers during Halloween season, and the&nbsp;Cowtown Santa Express&nbsp;drew 3,044 holiday season tourists.&nbsp;

 Actions: Do not burn outdoors. Never throw lit cigarettes out of a vehicle. Report any wildfires to local authorities immediately. Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and exhibit extreme fire behavior. Always report areas on concern by calling 911.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded Thursday to S. Milford Lake Rd. and Easy Jacks Rd. for a motor vehicle accident. Sean Hall of Enterprise was traveling north on S. Milford Lake Rd. in a 1993 Ford Ranger when a deer entered onto the roadway. In an effort to avoid the deer Sean over corrected and ran off the road to the left. This caused the vehicle to rollover, landing in a pasture upright. 

Hall reported minor injuries but declined EMS. A private service removed the vehicle.

Sheriff's Department works one vehicle accident

Washington, D.C. -&nbsp;U.S. Senator Roger Marshall joined a letter led by Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) in strong opposition to the EPA’s final rule revising the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) under the Clean Air Act, according to a media release from Marshall's office.

This rule would automatically deem parts of Kansas in violation of the Clean Air Act because of smoke from prescribed fires and even dust from high winds. This comes just before the season where ranchers across Kansas will use prescribed fire to kill invasive species and encourage the growth of new grass.

The letter was also signed by Senators John Barrasso (R-WY), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), John Boozman (R-AR), Mike Braun (R-IN), Katie Britt (R-AL), Ted Budd (R-NC), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Steve Daines (R-MT), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Bill Hagerty (R-TN), John Hoeven (R-ND), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Ron Johnson (R-WI), John Kennedy (R-LA), Mike Lee (R-UT),&nbsp; Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), Pete Ricketts (R-NE), Jim Risch (R-ID), Mike Rounds (R-SD), Eric Schmitt (R-MO), Rick Scott (R-FL), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), Thom Tillis (R-NC), J.D. RILEY COUNTY—Just after 7:30p.m. Thursday, Riley County Police officers filed a report for fraud/worthless check/theft in the 500 block of McCall Road in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Menards reported an unknown suspect used a fraudulent check to pay for services. The estimated total loss associated with this case is estimated to be $6,072.
