Geary County Historical Society Executive Director&nbsp;

The Geary County Historical Society’s annual Ice Cream Social will be held Saturday, September 14th, this year with the addition of a vintage car show to the lineup. The event, which also includes live music and food, will be held at the museum grounds located at 530 North Adams from 10am-2pm. Food for sale will include: hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, popcorn, homemade pie, and ice cream. Cash is suggested. Local musicians including the Kansas Brigade Band, the Junction City High School Pep Band, and North 40 will perform throughout the day. A musical chair style cakewalk will be held, and hands-on STEAM activities will be available for children.

The Hot Dogs and Hot Rods car show will begin at 9am with a special coffee hour for the car owners, and then will open to the public at 10am. Car show registration is currently open, and spaces are limited so early registration is encouraged. Historical Society announces plans for Ice Cream Social

On Aug. 18 at approximately noon, deputies from the Geary County Sheriff’s Office took a report of an alleged physical altercation that took place on Milford Lake (Nudie Beach), Geary County Kansas on Aug. 17.

In a news release the Sheriff's Department said during the investigation into this physical altercation, it was learned Kurtis Geisler of Leonardville&nbsp; was at the beach with family and friends. The investigation revealed that threats of harm and a physical altercation had taken place between Geisler and another subject, identified as 42-year-old Ryan Diedrich of Randolph. During the investigation and speaking with several witnesses it was learned Diedrich had attempted to drown Geisler by holding him underwater, before being pulled off by witnesses. Geisler sustained minor injuries that were later medically treated.

On Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 3:39 p.m. Ryan Levi Diedrich was taken into custody on the allegations of Attempted Murder (2nd Degree) and Criminal Threat and is currently being held at the Geary County Detention Center without bond, pending his first appearance.

KANSAS CITY, MO– Scammers have increased their tactics to defraud customers, and Evergy is warning customers to be vigilant.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Scammers are posing as Evergy representatives, trying to deceive customers with two recent scam attempts.&nbsp;

One targets senior citizens. Scammers are claiming Evergy is returning $200 to senior citizens through the company’s Evergy Cares Kansas Fund, then asking for customers’ account information, address, and other personal information. This is a scam. The Evergy Cares Kansas Fund does not give customers cash; it provides financial assistance directly to the customers’ account, but customers must initiate contact with Evergy first. Evergy issues a scam warning

--The Geary County Schools USD 475 Board of Education has authorized a $1,000 retention payment for all returning classified staff and a $750 recruitment payment for all new classified staff who are employed by Monday, Sept. 16. These funds will be paid from ESSER funds which must be exhausted by Monday, Sept. 30.

--On Tuesday night, the board approved the recommendation from staff to issue Carroll Seating, Inc., the award to replace the Junction City Middle School scoreboard, which was recently damaged in a storm, for approximately $43,754.66.

Carroll Seating, Inc., proposed a new Nevco Model 3625 football and soccer scoreboard. This price includes the demolition of the destroyed scoreboard, the new scoreboard, freight, excavation, and installation.

--The Board of Education approved the 2024-25 budget as presented for final preparation and filing. The Building Needs Assessment and State Assessments were provided to the Board of Education and were evaluated by the BOE. They were also used in the Budget Approval Process. The levy of property taxes exceeding the Revenue Neutral Tax Rates was calculated for 2024-2025 and adopted for the following funds: General Fund, Supplemental General Fund (LOB), Capital Outlay, and Bond and Interest No. 1.

City awards bid for tree removal

Prior to leading the regional healthcare system, he served as Stormont Vail’s Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for three years.

The Stormont Vail Board of Directors has started a search process to identify Dr. Kenagy’s successor.

Under Dr. Kenagy’s leadership, the Topeka-based organization has had significant regional growth to ensure high quality care for patients and communities across eastern Kansas. This includes the opening of a state-of-the-art Manhattan primary and specialty care campus, and preventing the closure of a county hospital and rural health clinic in Junction City, that now operates on Stormont Vail’s Flint Hills Campus. Plans are underway to enhance clinic facilities in Emporia, where the organization has served patients for 30 years.

Dr. Kenagy also led the Stormont Vail team and communities it serves through the COVID-19 pandemic. He spent 22 years serving as a family medicine physician. He has a Master’s in Medical Management from Tulane University and received his medical training at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1987. Dr. Kenagy completed his Family Medicine Residency through the University of Kansas School of Medicine Wesley Medical Center.

JC Breakfast Optimist Club Installs New Officers

The inaugural Kansas Landowner Conference took place in 2023, helping landowners removed from agriculture learn more about managing their properties and developing relationships with tenants.

This year, K-State Research and Extension farm economist Robin Reid said event coordinators added a day to the conference due to positive feedback from past attendees.

The conference is set for Oct. 10-11 at the K-State Alumni Center in Manhattan, Kansas.

“We had a great turnout at the first conference,” she said. “Previously, it was all in one day. We have found since then that there are many issues that landowners want to learn more about, so we expanded it to two days, giving participants more availability to desired information.”

“We know that this is smack dab in the middle of harvest for some people,” said Ashlee Westerhold, K-State director of the Office of Farm and Ranch Transition. “However, our target audience are those who own Kansas land but are not operating the land themselves.”

Reid added, “A demographic that we really want to experience this conference are those who did not necessarily grow up on the farm or those who inherited a farm and do not know where to start on how to handle being a landowner and working with a tenant.”

Due to the recent downturn in the farm economy, Reid said this year’s event will include more breakout sessions around topics that will “impact every Kansas landowner’s bottom line.”

“For crop-share landlords that do their grain marketing, we have an awesome session on how to put together a marketing plan, navigate crop insurance and select government support programs,” she said.

“Some of the other sessions revolve around components of a well-written lease, leasing rates and how to effectively negotiate with tenants.”

Additional breakout sessions happening during the 2024 Kansas Landowner Conference on Oct. 10 include:

Wind and Solar Leases, with Kansas Farm Bureau’s Wendee Grady – 1:30 p.m.

Climate and Carbon Credits, with K-State’s Micah Cameron-Harp – 1:30 p.m. Hunting leases, with K-State wildlife specialist Drew Ricketts – 2:30 p.m. &nbsp;Charitable Strategies in Agriculture, with K-State Foundation senior director of gift planning Darci Cain – 2:30 p.m.

Reid said landowners on the fence about participating should strongly consider it because industry experts will be presenting on the topics they receive the most questions about.

“The agricultural economics department gets information requests all the time about things like ‘What is the going rate for pasture rental in my area?’, ‘What are the legal implications of renting?’ and ‘What should I have in a written lease?’” she said.

“Our attendees will be able to answer those questions after the conference, feel comfortable with that information and know the people to contact if they want to learn more,” Westerhold said.

Currently, the early-bird cost of attendance is $350 per person, or $650 for two business partners. Westerhold said prices will increase after Sept. 15.

“At the 2024 conference, we are offering a business partner discount rate because we know a lot of our attendees are couples, siblings and parents/children, so having both people there to experience this event is something we wanted to encourage,” she said.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged child sex crimes.

Just after 3:30p.m. on Tuesday, police arrested 38-year-old Evan Volker of Assaria, Kansas, in the 1000 block of S. Seth Child Road on a warrant for rape and aggravated indecent liberties with a child, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

On August 31, authorities in Saline County arrested Volker after a warrant/National Crime Information Center hit.&nbsp; &nbsp;Volker is being held on a $50,000 bond&nbsp;

Junction City Commissioners have adopted an ordinance amending the sale, storage, or discharge of fireworks.

In the future the discharge of fireworks will be allowed from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on July 1-4.

Geary County Commissioner Alex Tyson said Tuesday that the Trooper Gate closure issue boils down to manpower and mission. He met recently with the Garrison Commander and his team on the subject.

The Army closure of the gate connecting Fort Riley with the north side of Junction City has been a source of irritation for county leaders. But following the meeting Tyson noted that the military officials reviewed the statistics that they ran for making the closure decision. He also explained that the Post does not have as much manpower so they would have to take Soldiers out of doing their jobs of preparing Soldiers ready for training and response missions. Also noted was that Trooper Gate is a two-lane entry while the Grant Ave. gate which is being utilized for traffic instead has four lanes.

Tyson noted the Army's mission is to defend the country and&nbsp; deployment is the number one mission of Fort Riley. Troops have to be trained. Also pointed out was that Grant Ave. needs some attention and work.&nbsp;

The Army has indicated that they continue to monitor traffic patterns and flow through all gates and would reassess the closure at a later date.

New Register of Deeds takes the oath of office

The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) has released its Labor Day Weekend Holiday Activity Report, covering the period from 6 p.m. on Friday, August 30 to 11:59 p.m. on Monday, September 2, 2024. 

During this time, KHP personnel assisted 575 motorists and responded to one fatal non-DUI related crash, resulting in one fatality.

The victim in the drowning incident at Milford Lake on Saturday has been identified by Fort Riley as 29-year old Pvt. Ismael Ouedraogo with 5/15th&nbsp;Cec-A&nbsp;.

GEARY COUNTY —One person drowned Saturday at Milford State Park.

The Geary County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks responded to the drowning at the south boat ramp, swim beach located in the Milford State Park, according to a media release.

Bystanders located the individual who was reported being under water for more than 10 minutes and began CPR. 

 Upon arrival of EMS the individual was pronounced deceased.&nbsp; The sheriff's office has not released the name of the victim.

Army identifies drowning victim

The initial report received by RCPD indicated the young woman was found in the 800 block of Laramie Street after walking home from a local establishment.

&nbsp;Police are reviewing surveillance footage from Aggieville and surrounding areas and are following up on any leads to determine the cause of the woman's injuries. Police encourage anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has any information to come forward and assist with the investigation.

August was wonderfully “average”. Temperatures were within a few tenths of a degree of average. Precipitation was within a few hundredths of an inch of average. “Average” months don’t happen all that often, but August was “average”

.The average daily high for August was 87.6, 0.4 of a degree below normal. The average overnight low was 68.5, 2.2 degrees above normal. This resulted in a monthly average temperature of 78.1, nine tenths of a degree above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 103 degrees on August 25th and the only daily high during the month of 100 or above. The lowest temperature for the month was 59 degrees on the morning of August 9th. The overnight low of 77 on the 29th tied the record high low temperature for that date. The record was originally set in 1955.&nbsp;

 With the month essentially being average we were a long way from record setting temperatures. The warmest August in record was in 2000 with a monthly mean temperature of 85 degrees. The coldest August on record goes back to that chilly year of 1981 with a monthly mean temperature of 71.5. 1981 was also the year we had our first frost on September 17th, nearly a full month earlier than normal!

Average August rainfall is 4.55 inches. August 2024 brought us 4.52 inches of rain which is about as close to “normal” as you can get. The rains were fairly evenly distributed throughout the month much to the pleasure of farmers and gardeners. The driest August was in 1971 when no rainfall was received over the entire month. The wettest August was in 2013 when 10.33 inches of rain deluged portions of the county.

&nbsp;Meteorological fall starts September 1st, while astronomical fall begins on September 22nd. With the earth tilting away from the sun and hours of daylight declining quickly, temperatures start to decline as well. The average daily high on September 1 is 85 and by the 30th it has dropped to 75. Overnight lows begin the month at 64 and end the month at 51. While long term first average frost is mid-October, September frosts can happen, but only twice in the past 75 years! Rainfall also starts to decline in September as we begin the move into our drier time of the year. Average September rainfall is 2.85 inches. While some residents may already be dreaming of a white Christmas, first snowfall is a long ways off yet and the area can still see temperatures in the 90s and 100s during any given September!

August 2024 Junction City Area Weather Summary

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY —Law enforcement had good news to report on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Two dinosaur statues, stolen overnight August 31 - September 1, have been recovered, according to Wamego Police. On Sunday police reported a citizen offered a reward for information leading to the recovery of the statues, according to a social media report.

Thanks to a tip received by Officer Albin and with assistance from SMPD Sergeant Wood the dinosaurs were recovered. Police have not reported an arrest or additional details.

 </figure>POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY —Law enforcement had good news to report on Tuesday.&nbsp;Two dinosaur statues, stolen overnight August 31 - September 1, have been recovered, according to Wamego Police. On Sunday police reported a citizen offered a reward for information leading to the recovery of the statues, according to a social media report.Thanks to a tip received by Officer Albin and with assistance from SMPD Sergeant Wood the dinosaurs were recovered. Police have not reported an arrest or additional details.

DICKINSON COUNTY —A Salina church group is safely home after the assistance of the Kansas Highway Patrol and a tire shop in Abilene.

According to a social media report, "KHP Trooper Mullins encountered a situation that reminds us all of the importance of being prepared. 

Just before 8:30a.m. Monday, Trooper Mullins pulled up to a bus stranded in the&nbsp; median just east of the Chapman exit on Interstate 70 in Dickinson county. The bus, carrying about 20 members of a church group from Salina, had blown both front tires while returning home from Kentucky.

Despite calls to several wreckers, no one had the equipment to tow the bus. Trooper Mullins advised the group to arrange rides for the passengers and reached out to <a href="https://www.donstire.net/">Don’s Tire in Abilene.</a> Even on his holiday off, a gentleman from<a href="https://www.donstire.net/"> Don’s Tire </a>stepped up to change the tires, ensuring everyone got home safely. After six hours of traffic control by Trooper Mullins, the bus was back on the road.

This incident is a reminder to always check your vehicles—whether big or small—before embarking on trips.

An off-the-record conversation called Kansas Dialogue is coming to Junction City the third weekend in August 2025.

Geary County Convention and Visitor's Bureau&nbsp; Director Donna Price said it's a unique event with people from all over Kansas. For example some political leaders or judges could be among those in attendance. People are brought in but the conversations are in private. No posts or sharing of information are allowed. Issues in Kansas, round tables, bloggers and authors, are examples of activities or people who might also be there.&nbsp;

Price noted there will be tours in Geary County during the event. Other details remain to be finalized.

According to information from the Kansas Dialogue 2024 meeting in McPherson the group size was scheduled to be in the 70-90 range. Conversations would range from full group discussions to smaller concurrent sessions and round tables. Kansas Dialogue is an immersion experience and the people who come want good conversation and to meet new people. The final program and participant list was only shared with those who register.

Junction City Commissioners will consider a proposed ordinance Tuesday night that would amend the sale, storage, or discharge of fireworks.

The Commission by consensus recently favored allowing discharge of fireworks in the future from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 1-4.

The governing body will be in session at 7 p.m. Tuesday at 701 North Jefferson.

GEARY COUNTY —&nbsp; Two people were injured in an accident just before 10p.m. Saturday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2002 Chevy Monte Carlo driven by Samuel A&nbsp;Mertens, 40, Kearney, Nebraska, was westbound on Interstate 70 and entered the construction zone between mileposts 295-U.S. 77 exit and 300-Kansas 57 exit.

&nbsp;Traffic began to slow in the construction zone. The Chevy rear-ended a 2016 Nissan Altima driven by Michael W Catt, 27, Wichita.&nbsp; After impact the Chevy&nbsp; drove around the Nissan and continued driving until he stopped near the Ohio Street exit in Saline County.

Mertens was not injured. Catt complained of pain and drove himself to the hospital. EMS transported a passenger in Nissan Wendy R. Catt, 54, Wichita, to&nbsp;Salina Regional Health Center. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The 115th annual Labor Day Celebration is set for this weekend in Chapman. The theme of the parade at 2 p.m. Monday will be "To the Stars - Remembering Joe Engle." The family of Joe Engle will serve as grand marshals for the parade.

&nbsp; Engle &nbsp;was born in Abilene and raised in Chapman where he attended primary and secondary school and graduated from Dickinson County High School in 1950.&nbsp; &nbsp;He flew space shuttle missions for NASA.
