The Chamber has announced that the dinner is scheduled Thursday March 7th at the Geary County Convention Center. There will be a reception at 6 p.m. and the dinner will begin at 7 p.m. Awards will be presented during the evening.

Postseason basketball has officially arrived. KSHSAA released the substate brackets for all classifications in Kansas. Substate play begins this Tuesday, Feb. 27,  an goes through Saturday, Mar. 2.&nbsp;

For the Junction City Lady Jays, they are the 16 seed and are on the road. They will play number one seed Wichita Heights on Tuesday night, Feb. 27, in Wichita at 6:00 p.m.&nbsp;

Brackets announced for substate - JC girls on the road, boys at home

More improvements are coming to the Fifth Street Playground Park in&nbsp; Junction City. They'll range from a fitness court and new picnic shelter to a pair of new water fountains and one barbecue grill.

According to the Junction City Parks and Recreation Director Joshua Gray, the City will provide $100,000 for the project plus in-kind work by the Public Works Department, and there will be financial support from Quality Play for All and a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas grant.

The project should be finished in the May - June time frame.

Previous upgrades to the park included installation of new playground equipment that was done in two phases, plus a basketball court, a sand volleyball court and I.C.A.R.E. exercise equipment.

Junction City had eight wrestlers compete on day two of the state wrestling tournament at Hartman Arena Friday. 

For the girls, Charly Goodwin (wrestling at 110 pounds) and Juliana Villanueva (wrestling at 115 pounds)  both competed in the semi-finals in their respective brackets. Goodwin lost in the semi-finals, while Villanueva won her match and will wrestle for a state title on Saturday. Goodwin will continue battling on the consolation side of the bracket in hopes of being a state qualifier. 

Victoria Perez (wrestling at 190 pounds) was on the consolation side of the bracket and eliminated on Friday afternoon. 

On the boys side, five Blue Jay wrestlers competed on day two. After the second day of wrestling, only two boys wrestlers are still competing. The two wrestlers still alive are Griffin Bohanan (wrestling at 175 pounds), and Chris Coy (wrestling at 215 pounds).

Jacqie Reisinger will seek the office of Geary County Register of Deeds in the 2024 election. According to County Clerk Courtney Gilbert, Reisinger filed for election on Friday.

Reisenger is currently the Deputy Geary County Register of Deeds. She is planning to seek the seat held by Diane Briestensky, who has announced her intention to retire near the end of this year.

Reisenger has&nbsp;worked for Geary County in the Register of Deeds office since October 2019, and has been the Deputy since April 2021.

FORT RILEY, Kan. – &nbsp;In recognition of their heroism while responding to a vehicle accident, Fort Riley Community Recreation Division Chief Matt Enoch and Fort Riley Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Jason Poulin were honored during a ceremony at Fort Riley Garrison Headquarters Feb. 6, 2024. Fort Riley Garrison Commander, Col. Michael Foote, expressed gratitude for Enoch and Poulin's selfless actions that day, remarking that they had saved multiple lives with their courageous efforts.

July 16, 2024, Poulin, Enoch and Fort Riley Soldier Sgt. 1st Class Joshua Manley, a combat medic from the 1st Infantry Division, responded to an accident involving a 15-passenger van in Wallace County, Kansas. The award citations each received credited their actions as instrumental in rescuing twelve individuals, including two adults and ten children.

Foote emphasized that heroes are present among us daily and are recognized when they step forward and take action, highlighting the importance of being in the right place at the right time to make a difference.

“Their actions truly rescued the lives of their fellow American citizens on that day.” Col. Foote said.

While returning to Fort Riley from official travel, Enoch and Poulin encountered the overturned van on Highway 40, which had ten juveniles inside including an infant. Enoch, known for his compassion and quick thinking, said he found himself thrust into a life-changing situation after witnessing the aftermath of a tragic rural Kansas accident. Despite lacking prior emergency experience, Enoch rose to the occasion, aided by the experienced leadership of Sgt. Major Poulin responded.

The citation received by Poulin credited his actions in the face of chaos. It also cited Poulin's U.S. Army training and the actions taken as pivotal in stabilizing the situation and providing aid to the injured individuals.

Enoch assisted in loading the injured into an ambulance and Poulin's mentorship to identify injuries and deliver initial care.

“I'm glad we were there. Because I know that we saved lives,” Enoch said, “Sgt. Maj. Poulin has a career worth of combat lifesaving experience and from his experience during his deployments. Then you had Sgt. 1st Class Manly, a combat medic from the 1st Inf. Div., and I mean, as terrible as that situation was how fortunate is that? That’s a miracle.”

Enoch said that this life-changing experience taught him the importance of intervening in critical situations and the significant impact of quick decision-making and medical expertise in saving lives during emergencies. Reflecting on the events of that day, Enoch said he appreciates the opportunity to have made a positive impact and witnessed firsthand the heroism and dedication exemplified by individuals like Sgt. Major Poulin and Sgt. First Class Manley. He said their actions embody the true essence of compassion and self-less service.

“It's like the stars aligned perfectly to guide us to that exact moment,” he said. “I believe everything happens for a reason, and I am thankful for the opportunity to do what I was trained to do when lives hung in the balance.”

During the past nine years, the Central Flint Hills Area Quilt of Valor Project has touched the lives of over 470 military veterans and active-duty service members and their families by awarding comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. Nominations continue to come in and additional QOVs are needed.

Fabric, batting &amp; backing supplies are available and will be displayed for QOV quiltmakers to shop at the Alida Cooperative Church, 2243 3300 Ave, Junction City, February 29 &amp; March 1. QOV quiltmakers may select fabrics to use in making QOVs. Please bring a quilt pattern(s) you would like to make to cut yardage needed or be willing to shop available fabric (&amp; fabric scraps) to design &amp; make a QOV. A few cutting mats and rulers are available, but quiltmakers may want to bring their own plus a rotary cutter. Raised tables, ironing boards &amp; irons are available.

Quilters are invited to bring their sewing machine, other sewing tools, and sewing thread and spend time making QOVs with fellow quiltmakers. Machines may be left overnight on Thursday. No meals are provided. Snacks are welcome. A kitchen is available.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann told Hutch Post this week that a long-term Farm Bill is not close to being done.

"We've got quite a ways to go," Mann said. "We know it currently expires Sept. 30. We know that food and nutrition programs and crop insurance is mandatory spending, so that will stay in place no matter what. We also know that there's a strong desire, certainly on my part and folks on the Ag committee to get this Farm Bill done, locked an in play, so we can move forward."

The vast majority of the Farm Bill is nutrition programs, though and urban congress members may not care one way or the other when it gets done as long as those programs are funded.&nbsp;

"Farm Bills need to be long enough to provide some certainty, but short enough that they can be looked at and adjust and change with the times. A five year Farm Bill is an appropriate length. It's time for a five year Farm Bill to give our producers some certainty."

Work in the House is actually a little bit ahead of the Senate when it comes to the Farm Bill, but once both sides have their position, they will have to come to an agreement on the legislation, so it's likely that it will at least push the September deadline, if not need an additional extension.

Mann says farm bill still far off

TOPEKA —&nbsp;Joe Cheray is well aware that clergy members aren’t required to report child abuse.

She remembers going to her priest as a child, asking for his help when she was being sexually abused.&nbsp;Cheray said he did nothing.

“Had I known back then clergy were not mandated reporters of abuse, I would’ve just went to law enforcement and the Department for Children and Families. I wouldn’t have even said anything to my church at all,” Cheray said.

Cheray, who advocates with other survivors of child sex abuse every week in the entrance of the Statehouse, is asking that ministers and clergy be required to report cases like hers.

Earlier this month, Rep. Tobias Schlingensiepen, a Topeka Democrat and senior pastor at First Congregational Church, introduced&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2023_24/measures/hb2300/">House Bill 2300</a>,&nbsp;which would add ordained ministers of religion to the mandated reporters list, with an exception for penitential communication, such as confession.

“People wonder why that isn’t the case already, and frankly, as a pastor, I do too,” Schlingensiepen said.

The bill was assigned to the Judiciary Committee, and no hearing has been scheduled.

DCF estimated implementation of the bill would result in increased reporting to the Kansas Protection Report Center, which oversees abuse reports. The change could result in an increase of $74,569 in expenditures from the State General Fund for an additional staff position to deal with the workload.

Four previous attempts to get clergy added to the list of mandated reporters failed in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023. Sen. Tom Holland, a Baldwin City Democrat,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/01/26/kansas-democrat-introduces-senate-bill-making-clergy-mandatory-reporters-of-suspected-abuse/">led the charge</a>&nbsp;during the last legislative session following the release of a four-year investigation of Catholic clergy abuse by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The KBI report found at least 188 church members suspected of committing offenses ranging from indecent liberties with a child to rape.

Schlingensiepen said he didn’t have a lot of optimism that the bill would be implemented this session, because of lawmaker preoccupation with other issues, such as the flat tax. A&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/02/20/kansas-house-republicans-fail-to-override-governors-veto-on-massive-tax-reform-bill/">Republican-led effort to override</a>&nbsp;Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s veto and pass a universal 5.25 percent income tax rate failed earlier this week.

“I feel like they don’t have any appetite to put more on their plates, but that said, I think hopefully it’ll be back again next session, and we’ll try this again, this time with multiple sponsors on both sides of the aisle,” Schlingensiepen said. “We already have very broad support.”

For now, Cheray will keep advocating for broader protections for survivors of sexual assault.

“I do this for the kid in me that didn’t know,” Cheray said. “And I do this for all of the other survivors and victims now and in the future so that there is one more protection point for them to hopefully get some help."

Just after 3:30p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for unlawful discharge of a firearm and possession of stolen property report in the 100 block of Bluemont Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Just before 2a.m. Thursday, police responded to a shooting in the 8100 block of E Harry in Wichita, according to Police Lt. Aaron Moses.

First responders located 26-year old Audreanna Hidalgo of Wichita with a gunshot wound.&nbsp; She was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officers with the Patrol East Community Response Team and Homicide Investigators immediately began investigating this case to understand what occurred. Throughout that investigation, police have come to believe that this was a case of Intimate Partner Violence.

Our investigators were able to quickly identify a suspect. Police arrested&nbsp; Alcox in Junction City, according to Moses.

Alcox was booked<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=284446"> into the Sedgwick County jail </a>just before 5p.m. Thursday, according to jail records. He is being held on requested charges of first degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon and contempt of court, according to online jail records.

Alcox was on pre-trial supervision on a charge of Aggravated Battery. There is no documented history between this suspect and victim through the Wichita Police Department, according to Moses.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

This is the eighth criminal homicide in Wichita in 2024.

On Thursday, Feb. 22, at 1:54 a.m., Wichita Police Officers responded to the report of a shooting in the 8100 block of E. Harry. Upon arrival, officers located 26-year-old Audreanna Hidalgo of Wichita with a gunshot wound. Unfortunately, Audreanna was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officers from the Wichita Police Department’s Community Response Team and Homicide Investigations Unit determined that this was a case of Intimate Partner Violence. They identified the suspect as a 38-year-old male of Junction City.

Investigators from the Wichita Police Department utilized the FLOCK License Plate Reader system, confirming that the suspect had returned to Junction City in the early morning hours of February 22nd. Upon verification, the Wichita Police Department promptly informed the Junction City Police Department, initiating a collaborative effort to apprehend the suspect.

Subsequently, officers and detectives from the Junction City Police Department ascertained the suspect's address, leading to his apprehension at 8:32 a.m., without any further incident.

Both the Wichita and Junction City Police Departments' Investigations Units are working on this case to compile additional evidence before the suspect's transfer to Wichita for formal charging procedures.

Police assured the public that there is no current threat to the safety of either community. As this investigation is active, no further information can be disclosed at this time. They urged anyone with relevant information regarding this case to contact the Wichita Police Department’s Homicide Unit at (316) 268-4407.

The defendant made her initial court appearance Thursday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Rachel E. Schwartz of the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas. If convicted, she faces a maximum possible penalty of life in prison.

The Department of Army Criminal Investigation Division and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are investigating the case.

Joint city, county, USD 475 meeting is scheduled Monday

JC Post has learned from county and CVB officials that even though a two percent transient guest tax increase proposal has been discussed at the CVB Advisory Committee level there has not been a motion or vote taken on a recommendation. The matter is scheduled to go to the Geary County Commission on Monday. It is currently six percent with the proposal to put one percent of the new money, if approved, toward facilities and one percent toward the CVB.

Donna Price, CVB Director, told the county commission on Tuesday that the sports market has been good for the CVB but without an additional increase they won't be able to go after sports marketing like they have been.

Price indicated that the county commission will study the matter further and look at the topic next week.

Transient guest tax discussion goes before the Geary County Commission

The annual donation to Junction City High School’s JROTC program was presented at the club’s February 21 meeting held at Jim Clark’s Chevrolet. LTC Richard Hodgson, Cadets Dillon Todd and Jordis Serrano received the $200.00 donation.

LTC Hodgson shared with club members that “the mission of the JCHS JROTC program is to motivate youth to be better citizens and not recruit them for the US Army.”

He has been with the local high school’s program for 12 years following his retirement from the Army. “Currently there are 130 cadets enrolled”. Both Cadets Todd and Serrano are members of the three time nationally recognized Raiders Team, trained by SGT Ted Ehlers.

Cadet Serrano told the group that “Raiders members are constantly conditioning themselves for competition. Their day begins as early as 0630. Team members run a 5K every day and do other condition preparation for competitive events like an obstacle course, gauntlet, a physical team test, rope bridge and cross-country rescue. Many of these events require cadets to carry a ruck sack on their back or shoulder during the event. Conditioning is relentless”, she said.

Cadet Todd said “teams are made up of 8 cadets with 2 alternates. Team members are identified to participate in events based upon their skill levels”. LTC Hodgson added that “no cadet sits on the bench. If a cadet has a desire to participate and compete, they will get the opportunity”.

Cadet Jordis Serrano plans to attend either Kansas University or Kansas State University to become a baker or chef following high school graduation. Cadet Dillon Todd has plans of attending KSU and participating in the Air Force ROTC with aspirations of becoming a social worker or some field of aviation.

Washington Elementary instructional coach Jennifer Fallin was named one of seven state-wide 2024 Kansas Master Teachers on Thursday morning by Emporia State University. “It is truly an amazing honor to be named a member of the 2024 Kansas Master Teacher Class, knowing that our district has so many outstanding teachers who deserve this recognition. Just to be nominated and then selected is kind of surreal. I’m really proud and grateful that I get to represent our district,” said Fallin.

By being chosen for the 2024 class, Fallin becomes the third-straight Geary County Schools USD 475 teacher to claim the prestigious honor. She is also the 10th individual in USD 475 history to be named a member of the Kansas Master Teachers.

Fallin was chosen alongside Bre McGranahan of USD 229, Erica Threatt of USD 480, Jessica Brown of USD 497, Jessica Buchanan of USD 266, Lindsey Dowell of USD 437 and Sara Hoffman of USD 233. Fallin, who has been in the district and at Washington Elementary for 11 years, brings a wealth of knowledge to the classroom as she currently works with all grades at Washington as a multi-tiered system of supports instructional coach. She previously taught fourth and fifth grade students from 2013 through 2022.The Burlington, Kansas native, who was described by a co-worker as having a combination of passion, expertise, and a genuine desire to cultivate a love for learning, is currently the USD 475 SIT Coordinator. During her tenure, Fallin, who has served as a mentor and guide for fellow educators throughout the district, was named a semifinalist for the 2023 Kansas State Department of Education Kansas Teacher of the Year Award.

State Wrestling begins today at Hartman Arena in Park City

&nbsp;Stormont Vail Health has announced a $50,000 commitment to the Geary County Food Pantry. The commitment, made over five years, is in response to the Food Pantry’s capital campaign to build a new facility in Junction City.

There will be a check presentation on Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Geary County has a food insecurity rate of 13.3%, one of the highest in the State of Kansas according to Kansas Health Matters. As currently constructed, the Geary County Food Pantry faces numerous challenges in working to reduce that food insecurity in Geary County and providing community members the support they need. The current facility layout is not conducive to efficient operation, renovation opportunities are limited, and work space is at a premium. The combination of these factors led to Stormont Vail’s decision to support the Geary County Food Pantry’s campaign, and work to be a part of the solution to providing Geary County with the services and support necessary for the community.

&nbsp;Contributing to the Food Pantry’s campaign to construct a new, specially designed building and helping to strengthen their infrastructure follows the Stormont Vail pillar of community, working to make healthy foods the easy choice and ensure everyone is equally equipped to improve their health.
