The Junction City Lady Jays defeated the Abilene Cowgirls&nbsp;by a thrilling final score of 26-25 on Saturday morning at the Salina Invitational Tournament.&nbsp;With the victory over Abilene, the Lady Jays finished seventh in the Salina Invitational Tournament. 

In a back and forth game, Junction City senior point guard Amyah O'Neal hit the go ahead and game winning layup with 12 seconds left in the game. 

The Lady Jays were led in scoring by sophomore Navaeh Rushing. She finished the game with eight points. Senior Sara Rexrode finished with seven points, and O' Neal added four points.&nbsp;

It was the first win of the season for the Lady Jays, and the first win for Junction City under first year head coach Conor Reilly.&nbsp;

There are plans for a sports exhibit at the Geary County Historical Museum that would begin next summer and be available for viewing for about one year.

Loans of local artifacts for the exhibit will be accepted. Historical Society Executive Director / Curator Heather Hagedorn noted examples could include local baseball items, and there is a football jersey worn by the late Fred Bramlage.&nbsp;

TOPEKA, Kan. – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.8% in December. This is a decrease from 2.9% in November and a decrease from 2.9% in December 2022, according to a media release from the department.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 300 from November. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 700 over the month, while government increased by 400.

&nbsp;The unemployment rate in Geary County is down from 4.2&nbsp; percent in October and 3.3 in November to 2.8 percent last month.&nbsp;The rate in Riley County remained unchanged from 1.7 percent in November. The rate is also down or unchanged in counties across the region.

Since December 2022 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 11,400. This change is due to an increase of 3,200 private sector jobs and an increase of 8,200 government jobs.

“Following three months of job gains, Kansas nonfarm job estimates were essentially unchanged in December,” said labor economist, Emilie Doerksen. “Although job growth slowed in December, the state continues to see improvement compared to estimates for 2022.”

Jobless rate continues decline in Geary County

In their first ever trip to the the Spring Hill Invitational Basketball Tournament, the Junction City Blue Jays finish in second place.&nbsp;

The Blue Jays were defeated by the Olathe South Falcons 64-55 in the championship game of the mid-season tournament. Junction City held a one-point lead at halftime, 29-28, but the Falcons hit some big shots in the second half to defeat the Blue Jays.&nbsp;

Junction City was once again led in scoring by junior guard Jackson Austin, who finished with 18 points. Sophomore point guard Lovell Autry was the only other Blue Jay player to finish the game in double-digits, as Autry had 11 points.&nbsp;

With the loss, the Blue Jays fall to 9-2 on the season.&nbsp;

Three Junction City players were named to the Spring Hill Invitational All Tournament Team. These three players were Jackson Austin, Lovell Autry, and Ja'Twaan Williams.&nbsp;

Girls results from Salina Invitational Tournament

The Lady Jays were defeated by number four seed Salina Central by a final score of 51-9. The Lady Jays will play Abilene on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. in the 7th place game.&nbsp;

The JC Warming shelter is open and extending its hours through Sunday.&nbsp;

The warming shelter is at the Knights of Columbus Hall, at 126 W. 7th St. in Junction City.&nbsp; It is a warm place to sleep, and three meals provided each day.

The warming shelter is open to anyone,&nbsp;if a person sees anyone in the cold, or knows somebody without heat, please have them come down to the shelter.&nbsp;

No background check required, but if you have an ID, you are asked to bring it along. No weapons, alcohol or drugs allowed on the property.&nbsp;

As the winter chill grips Kansas, we all seek the comfort of a warm car in the cold mornings. However, it's crucial to remain vigilant about our vehicle's security.

 Important Notice: Recently, we've noticed a worrying trend – an increase in the theft of vehicles that have been left running and unlocked to warm up. Unfortunately, this practice, while understandable during our cold winters, makes these vehicles prime targets for criminals. There have been four reported theft cases of this type.

Safety Tip: If you need to warm up your car, please use a remote start system or a spare key. This way, you can keep your vehicle locked while it warms up, significantly reducing the risk of theft.

Junction City police confirm their poultry pursuit has come to an end.

The elusive chicken that's been ruffling feathers around town has been safely apprehended!&nbsp; Animal control officer Becky Meneffe managed to catch this feathered friend without a single scratch on her.

Police said that they're thrilled to report that she's now pecking around happily in a loving home outside the city limits, where she can cluck to her heart's content.

As amusing as this little escapade was, it's important to remember that owning chickens within city limits is not allowed. Leave the chicken rearing to the more rural areas.

As to the chicken's name that determination has not been made.

Coffman was elected by the Geary County Republican Central Committee during a convention Thursday evening at the Geary County Senior Center. There were no other candidates successfully nominated.

The Committee's election now goes to Governor Kelly for approval. If she does not act within seven days he automatically becomes sheriff.&nbsp;

Serving as Undersheriff since 2019, Coffman is filling the office of Sheriff vacated by Dan Jackson who is retiring Jan. 19

In a brief statement prior to the vote, Coffman outlined a few goals he wants to set forth for the Geary County Sheriff’s Office. The first was to complete the CALEA Accreditation.&nbsp;The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. is a credentialing authority, based in the United States, whose primary mission is to accredit public safety agencies, namely law enforcement agencies, training academies, communications centers, and campus public safety agencies.

Secondly he wants to strengthen relations with other departments and community organizations. Continuing to work on recruiting and retaining staff in the Geary County Detention Center was also mentioned in addition to taking a proactive approach to the mental health and wellness of those in law enforcement.

Coffman thanked the Central Committee for electing him and said he would not let them down. Approximately 60 people attended the convention including members of the Republican Central Committee and the general public.

Coffman has named Capt. David Gilbert to serve as Undersheriff.

Republican Central Committee elects a new sheriff

Junction City Manager Allen Dinkel has been notified that the Veterans Administration wants to build a larger clinic facility in Junction City because more space is needed. Services are currently provided at the Lieutenant General Richard J. Seitz Community-Based Outpatient Clinic at 1169 Southwind Drive.

The VA wants a building of up to 50,000 square feet. Developers are wanting to look at city owned property. Potential locations include the former call center building adjacent to South Spring Valley Road and a stretch of property near Rucker Road south of the existing Dollar General store in that northwest area of town. Other possible private locations could surface in the future.

Dinkel indicated it might be 2027 or 2028 before the project could occur. He briefed city commissioners this week and expects to bring more details back to the governing body in the near future.

Junction City Manager Allen Dinkel has been notified that the Veterans Administration wants to build a larger clinic facility in Junction City because more space is needed. Services are currently provided at the Lieutenant General Richard J. Seitz Community-Based Outpatient Clinic at 1169 Southwind Drive.The VA wants a building of up to 50,000 square feet. Developers are wanting to look at city owned property. Potential locations include the former call center building adjacent to South Spring Valley Road and a stretch of property near Rucker Road south of the existing Dollar General store in that northwest area of town. Other possible private locations could surface in the future.Dinkel indicated it might be 2027 or 2028 before the project could occur. He briefed city commissioners this week and expects to bring more details back to the governing body in the near future.

The Junction City Blue Jays survive and advance in the Spring Hill Invitational Basketball Tournament as they defeated Gardner-Edgerton 67-51.&nbsp; It was another sensational performance from junior Jackson Austin, who had 24 points, courtesy of 8 three-pointers.&nbsp; Two more Blue Jays scored in double-digits - sophomore Lovell Autry had 15 points, and Larkin Turner had 14.&nbsp; 

The Blue Jays led the whole game from start to finish, advancing to 9-1 on the season.&nbsp; 

With the win, the Blue Jays will play Olathe South in the championship game Friday night, scheduled for 8:15p.m.

The Lady Jays were defeated by #1 seed Andover 66-8.&nbsp; With the loss, the Lady Jays will play at 6:00 p.m. Friday night against Salina Central in the Salina Invitational Tournament.

Blue Jays Advance to Championship Game in Spring Hill Tournament

Geary County Treasurer Sherri Childs has announced that tag renewals for heavy truck and trailer owners are due by the end of February. The Kansas Department of Revenue sends renewal notices in December, but the Treasurer's Office was just notified those notices will be delayed until at least February 1st.

You still have options to renew before the end of February:

1. You can find and print your renewal notice online by visiting https://mvs2.dmv.kdor.ks.gov/PrintRenewals/ then mail it in with payment and proof of insurance. You can also come into our office with your plate number or your last registration along with proof of insurance (trailers require proof of insurance for the vehicle pulling the trailer).

All trucks with a declared weight over 54,000 lbs. require the form 2290.

2. If you decide to come into the office, you can save time by making an appointment:

Marketing Geary County is one focus for the CVB

Geary County Sheriff Dan Jackson will retire on Friday. He is wrapping up a career that includes a stint as sheriff since 2019, additional years with the Sheriff's Office and law enforcement, plus a total of 25 years in the military with that time split between the Navy and the Marine Corps. Jackson was appointed sheriff in 2019 to fill an unexpired term, and then elected to a term in that office in 2020.

During his time in the sheriff's role Jackson formed a command staff that focused leadership in three main divisions including administrative and technical services, operations and special operations. "I'm very comfortable with where the Geary County Sheriff's Office is at this point in time."

Other accomplishments included formation of a marine unit, and along with the Junction City Fire Department a dive rescue and recovery team.

Expect for the first Wind Chill Advisory, very cold wind chills
  as low as 20 below zero. For the second Wind Chill Advisory,
  very cold wind chills as low as 24 below zero. This is for portions of central, east central, north central and
  northeast Kansas.&nbsp;

For the first Wind Chill Advisory, it goes from 9 PM this
  evening to noon CST Friday. For the second Wind Chill
  Advisory, it will run from 6 PM Friday to noon CST Saturday. 

The cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed

The Junction City Blue Jays scored a season high 92 points while holding Sumner Academy to 43 points in the first round of the 2024 Spring Hill Invitational Basketball Tournament.&nbsp; Despite nearly a 2-week hiatus due to weather, the Blue Jays controlled from start to finish and saw multiple players in double digits.&nbsp;&nbsp;Junior Jackson Austin lead the Blue Jays with 25 points, while junior Ja'Twaan Williams had 17.  Also, Tre Ruffin scored 12 points and Lovell Autry finished with 11.
