WABAUNSEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating what could have been a burglary attempt at a rural home in Wabaunsee County.

Just after 2:30a.m. Wednesday, deputies responded to a residence just off Keene Eskridge Road. The homeowners security camera captured two suspects on their porch.&nbsp; When the duo saw the doorbell security camera, they turned and left.

If you recognize the suspect, the sheriff's office wants to hear from you at 785-765-3323.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran co-led a delegation that visited Israel this past weekend.

"These attacks were horrific," Moran said. "We saw the evidence of what transpired a little more than a month ago. There is absolutely no suggestion of any humanity. People just gunned down, homes broken into, children killed. We certainly wanted to convey the belief that Israel has the right to defend itself and put an end to potential Hamas attacks in the future."

Moran said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's request was straightforward.

"We need three things, were his words, ammo, ammo, ammo," Moran said. "The group, also, in talking to the defense minister, had a better understanding of how difficult it is to wage this war against Hamas, who have built their ammo bunkers, their leadership capacity, underneath hospitals, in tunnels that are multiple layers deep."

That's why when you hear reports of Israeli troops going inside a hospital, there's a strategic reason for it.

"Before we left, we met with seven families who have hostages in their family, taken by Hamas on that night. They know they are hostages. They've seen them in propaganda videos and their request is, to make certain, their demand is to make certain that America and the rest of the world puts pressure on Hamas to release those hostages, and it's not just a one day news story, that we keep this alive until the hostages are returned."

Moran said the money for Israel and Ukraine will be in a separate supplemental bill from the larger legislation to keep the government open that the Senate will be taking up right away.

The Army announced via social media that the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley will host the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Post on Thursday Nov.30th at 5:30 p.m. on the Ware Parade Field at 500 Huebner Rd..

There will be guest speakers and carolers, hot cocoa, cider, and cookies plus a visit from Santa Claus. Children will have the opportunity to talk one-on-one with Mr. and Mrs. Claus in Building 500 following the ceremony.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Just before noon Tuesday, officers filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 800 block of Walters Drive in Manhattan 

Eisenhower Middle School reported a known male suspect used a plastic stool to damage a wall in a classroom. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $500.&nbsp;

Guest speakers at the November 15 JC Breakfast Optimist Club meeting were from the Junction City High School’s Jobs for America’s Graduates – Kansas program. Willie Woods is the Instructor and Career Specialist for the program and Tyra Marteen is the Regional Manager. Taveion Mapes is the JCHS JAG-K Vice President; Alexis Philippi is the President and Carie Longshaw is the Secretary of the local high school program. Each elected officer had to go through a campaign followed by voting and their election to their respective offices.

Woods explained to the Optimists that “there are about 120 students in the program. Students at Junction City and Fort Riley Middle Schools, the Karnes and JCHS buildings make up the JAG-K program designed to provide career exploration, life skills, interview skills, resume writing workplace survival skills, leadership development, decision making and more. This is a four-year class in which all students may be eligible.&nbsp; They take field trips to Concordia, Manhattan, Topeka, Ellsworth, and other locations to expose students to different cultures and experiences.

To be considered for the JAG-K program students have to meet certain criteria in different categories. Some of those include academic performance, personal and environmental issues, social behavior, and others. Willie Woods further explained that his job “is to teach and find resources to help students develop their skills to be quality employees, employers and positive contributors to society.”

Alexis Philippi recently participated in a national competition for JAG students. Some of the areas in the competition included interviewing skills, employability skills, solving a project-based issue, financial literacy, working as a team and others. The event was held in Orlando, Florida where she placed third in the national competition.

The new Junction City Planning Commission will hold their first meeting on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the second floor training room at the Municipal Building.

Members of the Planning Commission will include Brad Chauncey,&nbsp; Kendall Schoenrock, Mary Snipes, George Savage and Stuart Wells.

The commission will elect a Chairman and Vice-Chairman, discuss&nbsp; duties as a member of the Planning Commission and duties as a member of the Board of Zoning Appeals.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Nobody wants the gift of foodborne illness during the holidays. Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee says food safety begins with a decision on whether to purchase a fresh or frozen turkey.&nbsp;

“If you choose fresh, be sure to place an order with your grocer or butcher shop and pick it up 1-2 days before the meal, then store it in the refrigerator,” Blakeslee said. “Frozen turkeys can be purchased any time and stored in the freezer.”&nbsp;

Frozen turkeys are best thawed in the refrigerator or in cold water, Blakeslee adds. In the refrigerator, plan on at least 5-7 days for a 20-pound turkey. In cold water, allow about 30 minutes per pound of turkey. Make sure your refrigerator temperature is set between 35-38 degrees Fahrenheit.&nbsp;

“When cooking the turkey, remember that 325 F is the lowest oven temperature to safely cook turkey,” Blakeslee said. “Use a food thermometer to be sure it reaches a minimum internal temperature of 165 F.”&nbsp;

If you only have one oven, use a slow cooker for hot dishes. A tabletop roaster oven can be used like a regular oven for many items. Even electric pressure cookers can prepare dishes safely. &nbsp;

When cooking two turkeys at the same time, make sure there is enough oven space for proper heat circulation. The cooking time is determined by the weight of one bird -- not the combined weight, Blakeslee said. &nbsp;

Use the weight of the smaller bird to determine cooking time. Use a food thermometer to check the internal temperature of the smaller bird first and then check the second bird. The internal temperature should be a minimum of 165 F.&nbsp;

“Check the internal temperature in the innermost part of the thigh and wing and the thickest part of the breast,” Blakeslee said.&nbsp;

When eating a salad, imagine how it might taste if all there was to eat were the stems of the plant. Not very appealing, right?&nbsp;

Similarly, cattle that are offered corn stalk bales to eat in place of hay also often find that to be less palatable, said Phillip Lancaster, beef cattle nutritionist for the Kansas State University Beef Cattle Institute.

Speaking on a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksubci.org/2023/11/10/sandhills-calving-corn-stalk-bales-mandatory-price-reporting/">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast, Lancaster said there is an increase of corn stalks being baled as a feed resource this year because of the shortage of hay and the decrease in pastures available for fall grazing due to a lack of moisture.

“Traditionally, grazing cattle in the late fall on harvested corn fields can be an option to extend the grazing season because cattle can eat the husks and leaves, which have a decent nutritional value,” Lancaster said. “However, this year farmers are baling up the corn stalks after they’ve harvested the crop, which leaves only the stalks that are lignified and indigestible.”

He said that when cattle are offered a corn stalk bale, they will consume the resource at a higher proportion of stalks than they would if they were just grazing the field.

“Producers feeding those bales will have quite a bit of wastage unless they grind them and add them to a mixed ration,” Lancaster said.

For producers who need to use this as a feed resource, Lancaster said they need to supplement the cattle with protein.

He added: “For cows going into their third trimester this winter, their maintenance requirements are higher so along with protein they will also need to be supplemented with energy as well.”

Additionally, there is a potential health concern with bales that were made from a failed corn crop when fed to the cattle, Lancaster said.

“If nitrogen fertilizer was put on the crop in the spring and then it failed, the plant may still be holding that nitrogen,” Lancaster said.

In that case, producers will need to test the bales for nitrates, according to Lancaster.

Cattle Chat: Feeding corn stalk bales

The annual Puttin' on the Glitz hosted by the Geary Community Healthcare Foundation is scheduled Dec. 9th at the Courtyard By Marriott Convention Center.

The Geary Community Healthcare Foundation will be raising funds for suicide prevention/awareness and to assist with the Co-responder program for Junction City. This program is where a mental health professional responds with Law Enforcement to assist with people in mental distress in order to assess and de-escalate situations. 

Riley County has had this program implemented now for two years and has seen a significant decrease in the calls they receive in reference to mental illness. With this program in place, there will be follow ups from the mental health provider that assisted with the situation.

Police have identified the victim in an early Tuesday morning single vehicle accident in the 200 block&nbsp; of North Eisenhower Drive as Kendall Talley, 25, Junction City. The accident was reported at 2:17 a.m. Authorities confirmed that the victim was transported to Stormont Vail Health Flint Hills Campus where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the victim's vehicle, a 2013 Toyota Highlander,&nbsp; left the roadway going around a curve and came to rest on its top. Talley was the only occupant of the vehicle.

Evergy responded to the scene following the accident to make repairs to a power pole.

The Third Annual Breakfast with Santa program will be held on Saturday, December 2 at the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library. This is a come and go event that will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at Noon. It is open to all families and there is no preregistration or admission fee.

Here kids can visit Santa, tell him their Christmas wishes and have their pictures taken. The Junction City Pilot Club will also be on hand to help them decorate their own, homemade sugar cookie. In addition, there will be games to play and a take home bag. A light breakfast will also be served.

The Breakfast with Santa activities will be spread throughout the library, from the meeting room to the Young People’s Department. Blue Jay football team hosts Awards night, celebrates 2023 season

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting in rural Pottawatomie County and have made an arrest.

Just after 6a.m., sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call of a shooting at a residence in the 4700 block of Blackjack Road in rural St. George,&nbsp; according to Sheriff Shane Jager.

First responders&nbsp; found an adult who had suffered a single gunshot wound. EMS transported the victim to a Topeka hospital.

During the investigation, deputies identified a suspect identified as 35-year-old Matthew R. Young of Rural Wamego. With the assistance of the Riley County Police Department, deputies located Young in Manhattan and arrested him on requested charges of Attempted Murder in second degree, according to Jager.

The sheriff's office did not release the name of the victim.

The Chamber of Commerce will host their Jingle Mingle on Thursday, Dec. 7th from 5-7 p.m.at the C. L. Hoover Opera House. The event is open to the community and will be in celebration of Chamber members, board and committee members, volunteers and supporters.&nbsp; The Chamber noted that it's a way to give back to the community. 

There will also be a Holiday Food Drive with the Jingle Mingle. Monetary donations and non-perishable foot items will be accepted. Requested specifics will include stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, soups, cereal, canned spaghetti sauce, hamburger helper and disposable aluminum turkey pans.

MARION COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 2p.m. Monday in Marion County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Cadillac&nbsp;Deville driven by Robert Gerard Enriquez, 59, Junction City, was northbound Kansas 15 just north of 340th Street.

The car left the roadway to the east, traveled through the ditch, a fence, went airborne and rolled into a field.

EMS transported Enriquez to St. Francis. He was propearly restrained, according to the KHP.
