Geary County Fish & Game Association looks ahead 

One remaining chore for fall gardens includes prepping the garden for spring. Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini said now is a great time to prepare the soil.&nbsp;

“With drier fall weather, the soil is less likely to clump when it is tilled,” Domenghini said. “Any clumps that do form will break down over the winter as the soil freezes and thaws, leaving behind soil that’s ready to plant in the spring.”&nbsp;

Domenghini said working the soil in the fall also breaks down debris, contributing organic matter back into the garden.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Debris provides a habitat for diseases and insects. Tilling it into the soil disrupts the habitat and prevents pests from overwintering and wreaking havoc on next year’s crops,” she said.&nbsp;

When adding organic matter into the soil, Domenghini suggests following the general rule of incorporating two inches of organic matter to the surface and tilling it in. Leaves and garden waste can be mowed first to cut it into smaller pieces that will break down more quickly.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Well-tilled soil should have pellet-sized particles. Use caution not to over till the soil and turn it into dust,” Domenghini said.&nbsp;

Thousands of people traveled to downtown Junction City on Saturday for the second day of Oktoberfest. As of 7 p.m. Saturday Phyllis Fitzgerald noted that coordinator Justin Hoover estimated the turnout in the 12,000 to 15,000 range. The event was scheduled until 11 p.m. Earlier in the day there was also a Volksmarch that included 5K and 13K run / walks.

Oktoberfest began Friday evening with estimated attendance in the 6,000 to 8,000 range.

Oktoberfest - Day Two

The annual Oktoberfest opened Friday night in downtown Junction City with an estimated turnout in the 6,000 to 8,000 range.&nbsp; Phyllis Fitzgerald and Kari Crump provided photos and Fitzgerald provided the attendance turnout from a coordinator for the event, Justin Hoover.

Oktoberfest and a Volksmarch are scheduled Saturday. The Volksmarch begins at 9 a.m. There will be 5K and 13K options. The Oktoberfest goes from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Oktoberfest draws a strong turnout on Friday evening

Junction City Police Chief John Lamb reported that the second annual Shop with A Cop Charity Golf Tournament was held on Saturday, September 30th.

"On behalf of the Junction City Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 43 and the Junction City Police Department, we extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of this year's Shop With A Cop golf tournament. We proudly raised $8,700 for the charity! A huge shout-out to our local businesses whose generous donations played a pivotal role in the event's triumph. Kudos to all the golfers who participated, especially with a new record-breaking score of 46 (26 under par) surpassing last year's record of 48. Our heartfelt thanks to the dedicated volunteers for their invaluable time and efforts. "

Shop with a Cop Golf Tournament was successful

Junction City Finance Director Lindsay Miller said this week that the city&nbsp; received their September 2023 sales tax increment. The total for this increment was $1,132,005.24. 

We knew this would be down from last year, as this was the month last year that there was an error at the state level. Due to an internal issue, they closed the month late at the state so the September payment was inadvertantly inflated. Then as a result of this, the October 2022 tax increment was lower. Since the month was closed out sooner, it resulted in a more accurate timeline and representation. However, with that being done, hopefully October 2023 will be higher, realigning the distributions. 

Due to this, no records were made; however, we did add one more month to our $1MM+ a month goal for the fiscal year. To have a number to compare this increment to, this put us $30K up from September 2021. Even with this, we are still ahead of both this year’s budget, and last year’s receipts.

Produced annually by KDWP’s Wildlife Division, the&nbsp;2023 Kansas Upland Game Bird Forecast&nbsp;is compiled from data collected during the Department’s spring calling surveys for pheasants (crow counts), quail (whistle counts), and prairie chickens (lek counts), as well as late-summer roadside surveys for pheasants and quail.

Kansas continues to support above-average quail populations with spring densities similar to last year, including significant increases in portions of the western regions of the state this spring.

Rains beginning in early summer and continuing through much of the nesting season greatly improved habitat conditions across the state. Given the high spring densities and improved summer conditions, staff expected to see increased production on the brood surveys this year.

Despite these conditions, brood detections were decreased. This may be attributed, in part, by the abundant habitat available during the survey.

Still, Kansas maintains one of the strongest quail populations in the country and, given the abundant access, harvest will again be among the highest in the country. The best opportunities will be in the central regions of the state into the Flint Hills, with quality hunting opportunities scattered throughout the remaining regions.

Intense drought conditions throughout 2022 reduced pheasant populations and the available nesting cover for 2023. Precipitation across most of the primary range this summer greatly improved habitat conditions for chicks. This should have improved the survival of broods that were hatched and could result in some localized improvements where nesting cover was maintained. However, lack of nesting cover and low populations across most of the state prevented any major improvements in densities this summer.

The High Plains region of the western third of the state saw some areas of improvement but remain low after sharp declines in 2022. The North Central Smoky Hills region remained good last year in spite of the drought but dropped to levels similar to the remaining pheasant regions.

The statewide pheasant index is similar to the previous drought cycle. Recovery from these declines will likely take longer as habitat has declined with the declines in CRP enrollment (again this year, acres enrolled in CRP were released to be used for emergency forage for cattle across most of the state). This will likely impact hunter success in 2023 as well as the amount of nesting cover for pheasants again next year. While hunting opportunities still exist where habitat was maintained, hunters will find challenging conditions and should be prepared to work for birds.

Kansas is home to both greater and lesser prairie chickens. Both species require a landscape of predominately native grass and benefit from a few interspersed grain fields. Greater prairie chickens are found primarily in the tallgrass and mixed-grass prairies that occur in the eastern third and northern half of the state. Greater prairie-chickens have recently expanded in numbers and range in the northwestern portion of the state while declining in the eastern regions.

Drought conditions are likely to have impacted production some, but prairie chickens are typically less volatile than other upland bird species and production is harder to estimate.

Hunting opportunities will be best in the Smoky Hills Regions this fall where populations have been stable and public access is more abundant.

The Southwest Prairie Chicken Unit, where lesser prairie chickens are found, will remain closed to hunting this year.

Regardless of preferred upland bird species, upland hunters can be as mobile as needed when utilizing Kansas’ combined 1.7 million acres of lands open to public hunting. KDWP’s Walk-In Hunting Access (WIHA) and iWIHA programs ­– which account for 1.07 million of those acres open to hunting – occur throughout much of the state’s main pheasant range. Through iWIHA, hunters can reserve hunting access on private lands with limited access. 2023 Kansas Upland Bird Hunting Forecast now available from KDWP

The Manhattan Indians defeated the Junction City Blue Jays 38-7 on Friday night at Bishop Stadium in Manhattan.&nbsp;

Manhattan scored on the first possession of the game on a 37-yard touchdown run by junior running back Jaydin Hudley. The Indians never looked back as they coasted all night on offense. Quarterback Carter Aslin had two rushing touchdowns on the night, which brings his total to 10 rushing touchdowns on the season.

For the Blue Jays, the offense moved the ball periodically throughout the game, but special team miscues doomed Junction City early in the game. Between a muffed punt and a bad snap going over the head of the punter that was scooped and scored for a touchdown, the Blue Jays could not respond after being down 23-0 at halftime.&nbsp;

Junction City did score late on a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brock Bazan, to sophomore wide receiver, Scholar Brown. It was Bazan's ninth touchdown pass of the season, and it was the first varsity touchdown for Brown.&nbsp;

Manhattan improves to 5-1 on the season, and Junction City falls to 3-3 on the year. Manhattan has won the past three matchups in this rivalry.&nbsp;

Next week both teams will be on the road, with Manhattan traveling to Lansing and Junction City traveling to Topeka High.&nbsp;

Scammers are using social media to go after your money and personal information. And it’s working: since 2021,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2023/10/ftc-data-shows-consumers-report-losing-27-billion-social-media-scams-2021">people have reported</a>&nbsp;losing $2.7 billion to scams that started on social media — way more than with any other contact method.

Scammers like social media because they can pretend to be someone they’re not. They can hack your profile, pretend to be you, and con your friends. They can target you and others using information from your profile like your age, hobbies, and what you buy. And they can do all this at little to no cost.

So what do social media scams often look like? Scammers might target you with an ad for something, but after you pay (for the thing that turns out to be fake), they take your money and run. Or they might try to sell you on a bogus investment opportunity (often involving cryptocurrency). Or they might send a friend request out of the blue and pretend to be a potential love interest. But then…they ask for money.

To avoid these and other scams on social media:

● Use your&nbsp;privacy settings&nbsp;to limit who can see your information and what you post.

●Don’t reply to messages that ask for money or personal information. Even if the message looks like it’s from a friend or family member, their account may have been hacked. Call them to check.

FTC: That friend request could be from a scammer

MANHATTAN, KAN. – Meadowlark hosted a housewarming event Wednesday, Sept. 27, for its new 24-unit independent living apartment building located on the main campus in Manhattan. The new building is called The Monarch and is located on the southeast corner of Meadowlark Road and Meadowlark Circle.

&nbsp;All 24 apartments within the Monarch are sold and occupied. The sales process for the new building began in 2019 and the project was put on hold after the pandemic began in 2020. On March 16, 2022, the crew broke ground on the much-anticipated project.

The project was born from a Community Needs Assessment, that determined Manhattan needed and could support more age-and income-appropriate housing. People who are

considering a move to Meadowlark have indicated they enjoy the lifestyle that living on campus has to offer and would like to see a modern living option with high ceilings, lots of natural light, underbuilding parking, and pet friendly. The now completed Monarch building incorporates all these modern-living options and it is centrally located on Meadowlark’s campus, featuring two towers connected by a common space at the main level.

“Retirement living will continue to change,” said Lonnie Baker, CEO. “It is our priority at Meadowlark to continue evolving, ensuring the organization upholds its mission to meet the community needs and be a resource for the region and beyond.”

Baker appreciates the focused and dedicated efforts of Meadowlark’s Sales team during the entire process of designing, selling, and constructing the new building. “Abby Cavender, Doug Fiser, and Jayme Minton led the charge and successfully sold 23 of the 24 units before we even broke ground. They did a wonderful job, and we are proud to have them on our team.”

The Monarch building is another step in Meadowlark’s campus-expansion journey focused on wellness and enhancing lifestyle options and amenities. On Meadowlark’s campus there is a nature area at Bayer Pond and a trail system spanning the organization’s 55 acres.

Within the outdoor nature area, residents and families can enjoy a fishing pond, two pondside gazebos, a birding glen, wildflowers, and a variety of terrains throughout the trail system, which also features three bridges.

In July 2019, the courtyard, which is centrally located in the main building, was renovated and is now home to a fire pit, putting green, walking path, covered seating, outdoor dining options, and a bar and grill.

In August 2020, Meadowlark’s restaurant and pub expansion and kitchen renovation was completed. This project began before the COVID-19 pandemic broke out and because of its completion date falling in the middle of heightened precautions, the restaurant opened for in-person dining for the first time on Feb. 8, 2021. Prairie Star Restaurant has expanded its pub and dining space and added event space that can accommodate up to 250 people. The restaurant space is open to residents, families, and Meadowlark Passport members to come dine, drink, and gather.

A new medical office building was completed in December 2021 on Meadowlark’s land located off Tuttle Creek Boulevard next to the Blue Hills Shopping Center. CenterPointe Physicians, PA leases the 7,000 square foot clinic, continuing their community focus of primary care for all ages.

Meadowlark is a not-for-profit retirement community founded in 1980 by a group of local citizens and six Manhattan churches who wanted a better living option for older adults in the area. Today, Meadowlark continues to meet the needs of the community through living&nbsp;&nbsp;accommodations, post-acute care, home health care, outreach programs focused on memory support and Parkinson’s disease, and providing a supportive work environment for team members.

Geary USD 475 Board of Education members have voted 7-0 on a resolution declaring their intention to enter into a lease purchase agreement with Piper Sandler Companies for a new early childhood center. At this point the cost estimate is $35 million dollars.

Cash received by the school district from federal impact aid could be used to help reduce the cost of the lease over time down into the neighborhood of $22.5 million.&nbsp;

In the resolution that they were considering the Board talked about locating the early childhood center on district owned property&nbsp; on Eisenhower, but they eventually decided to leave out a specific location pending further discussion.&nbsp;

USD 475 has announced that a Purple Star Certificate of Recognition was awarded to Eisenhower Elementary, Washington Elementary, Spring Valley Elementary and the Early Childhood Center. USD 475 has announced that a Purple Star Certificate of Recognition was awarded to Eisenhower Elementary, Washington Elementary, Spring Valley Elementary and the Early Childhood Center. They were recognized for demonstrating a major commitment to supporting students and their families connected to the United States military.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged fraud in Manhattan.

Just after 2:30p.m. Thurday, officers filed a report for fraud in the 1000 block of Westloop Plaza in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Kansas State Bank reported a known male suspect cashed 2 fraudulent checks at the bank in September and October. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $3,000.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new allegations after an arrest in Riley County.

Just after 4p.m. Thursday, police arrested 43-year-old Desie Chatfield of Hutchinson after being transported to the Riley County Police Department, according to the department activity report. 

Chatfield was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for probation violation. The original charge was for unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Chatfield is being held on a of $7,500 bond. 

He has previous convictions for domestic battery, aggravated domestic battery, criminal threat, criminal damage to property and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

The <a href="https://www.junctioncityoktoberfest.com/">Junction City Oktoberfest</a> celebration downtown is scheduled today plus all day Saturday and Saturday evening. The hours are 4 p. m. to 11:30 p.m. on today and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday. There will be craft beer, food, entertainment and live music on North Washington Street between 6th and 10th Street.

Brass Rewind will be back for a third year and will perform from 3:30 - 6 p.m. on Saturday. Tricks of the Light will perform Friday evening at 7 p.m. The Elite Academy of Martial Arts, JC Gymnastics and Clarabel's Dance Studio, the Next Step Dance Studio, and J-Steppers will perform and there will be numerous vendors selling items.

JC Oktoberfest set today and Saturday

RILEY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 4:30p.m. Thursday in Riley County.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2008 Ford Expedition driven by Chance Omli, 22, Manhattan struck a 2013 Hyundai Elantra driven by Travis Peters, 42, Havensville, in the 8200 block of Highway 24.

EMS transported Peters to Via Christi for treatment of his injuries. The RCPD released no additional details.

A "Coffee Talk" program I've wanted to do for several weeks, an interview with the newest staff member here at 107.9 FM/1420 KJCK and JC Post, recent Kansas State University graduate Anthony Gorges. He talks about his hometown, his college experience, his love for sports broadcasting and the path he took to arrive in Junction City the middle of August this past summer to go to work for us. He currently covers a variety of news and sports events for the radio station and JC Post while also working as the "play-by-play" voice for Junction City High School Blue Jay football.

John Hagerty is the head coach with the J.C. Pacesetter/Special Olympics. They have about 35 athletes and 13 coaches and meet most Saturdays.

Theda Bentley, one of his athletes, also attended the meeting. They both talked about the sports or the activities they are participating in. The last outing they did was the Topeka Zoo and Gage Park.

J.C. pacesetter is a local Special Olympics team serving Junction City and Fort Riley. The program is for individuals with intellectual disabilities to compete in different sports and social events. Activities include sports, fitness, and social events.
