The Junction City High School Lady Jays fall in their season opener against the Lady Panthers by a final score of 65 to 26.&nbsp; The Lady Jays were lead in scoring by freshman Makenna Hatcher, with 9 points in her varsity debut.

The Junction City High School Blue Jays defeated Great Bend in overtime, 66 to 63.&nbsp; The Blue Jays had 3 players score in double-digits: Larkin Turner (15), Michael Boganowski (15), and Jackson Austin (14).&nbsp; It was a tale of two halves for the Blue Jays.&nbsp; Junction&nbsp; City was, at one point, trailing by 14 points, but prevail to win in overtime.

Next action for both boys and girls will be in at Salina South High School Tuesday, December 5th.&nbsp; Both games can be heard on 107.9/1420 KJCK.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating the drive=by killing of a trophy buck in Riley County.

Just after 10:30a.m. November 24, someone shot a buck a few miles south of Zendale in Southern Riley County, according to a social media report from the Kansas Game Wardens.

The buck was shot with a rifle through the hind end and died. A local farmer was feeding&nbsp; cattle, and only a few yards away, out ran the deer. At that same time, a white Chevy truck was driving south down the road and fired one shot from the passenger side of the truck, striking the deer. 

The farmer was walking in the pasture near the cattle and witnessed the shot, first assuming it was towards them, which was only ~100 yds from the roadway, according to game wardens.

The truck then sped off. The farmer provided law enforcement with a partial tag and vehicle description.

If anyone has any information about this incident, please contact Warden Jedlicka at (785) 256-3614 or Lieutenant Gehrt at (785) 256-1199. Hopefully, with the information provided, officers can track down a suspect(s). 

Unfortunately, a first-time youth archery hunter has been hunting this trophy relentlessly and was devastated to see the warrior fall this way. The meat was salvaged and did not go to waste.&nbsp;

The City of Manhattan Parks and Recreation reported an unknown suspect damaged a screen and glass on an exterior window and then stole a 2021 Polaris 570 4x4 ranger, 4 Dewalt tools, and a MIG Welder. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $21,259. RCPD: Suspect took firearm from Manhattan home

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University will see nearly 1,300 candidates for graduation this fall at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/graduation/" target="_blank">commencement ceremonies</a>&nbsp;set for Friday, Dec. 8, in Manhattan and Salina and Saturday, Dec. 9, in Manhattan. Candidates from both the summer 2023 and fall 2023 semesters will be recognized. Ceremony information, including parking, accommodations and a live webcast of the Manhattan campus ceremonies, will be available on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/graduation/" target="_blank">K-State graduation website.</a>

K-State commencement ceremonies to recognize summer, fall 2023 degree candidates 

Junction City Commissioner Jeff Underhill has released a letter submitted to city and county commissioners concerning the funding disagreement over county payment for their share of EMS service. The City Commission had demanded payment of $802, 556 owed for EMS service by Dec. 5th or they would consider stopping that service to the rural part of the county. The County later paid $447,654. 64.&nbsp;

Britain Stites, City Attorney, wrote that on Wednesday the County Commission requested "the City rescind the aspect of its November 21th, motion for a December 5th deadline. That motion encompassed the possibility of suspension of ambulance or emergency services to the remainder of the County outside of the Junction City municipal boundaries.

The city commission would be unable to meet prior to its December 5th 7 p.m. meeting due to commissioner and / or key staff availability.

Based upon conversation with the City Manager and state law, the city promised not to take any action which would suspend services on or before December 31st.

They will forge forward with negotiations concerning payments and accounting for Fiscal Years 2022 and 2023 going to Fiscal Year 2024, as well as drafting a new interlocal agreement covering the provision of emergency medical services between both entities which will comply with the Interlocal Cooperation Act.

The City will deposit the County's check received with their November 27th resolution in reliance upon continued negotiations, with assurance of the continued negotiations from the County, and only upon approval of the City Commission.&nbsp;

The City does not plan to suspend rural EMS services on December 5th. Beyond that negotiations will continue.

JC Noon Kiwanis has donated $500.00 to Angel Tree of Geary County.

Angel Tree is a ministry of Salvation Army but relies on volunteer help and donations from the community. It receives no funding from the Salvation Army.

Angel Tree provides toys, clothing, gift cards and food during the holiday season. They provide coats and winter clothing as the weather&nbsp; gets cold.

Angel Tree accepts children newborn to 16 that meet the poverty guidelines.&nbsp;

KHP personnel assisted 1,117 motorists over the holiday reporting period

The Kansas Highway Patrol is releasing its Thanksgiving Weekend Holiday Activity Report. The reporting period for the holiday ran from 6 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22, through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, November 26.

The Kansas Highway Patrol worked one fatal crash over the holiday reporting period. The fatal crash occurred in Jefferson County. Preliminary crash log information can be found here:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas.gov/khp-crashlogs/search.do">https://www.kansas.gov/khp-crashlogs/search.do</a>.

Information in the table is compared to the data from both 2021 and 2022.

Kansas Highway Patrol 2023 reports Thanksgiving holiday activity

Hospice of Dickinson County is sponsoring its annual “Remember Me Tree,” to honor the memory of loved ones during the holiday season. The tree will be on display through the end of December, and can be found in the Home Health and Hospice office, 11 N. Broadway, Herington.

Anyone may place an angel on the tree to honor or remember a loved one. Donations are accepted for the ornaments. For donations of $20 or more, porcelain keepsake ornaments are available. Donation boxes can be found at the Home Health and Hospice office and other Herington businesses.

The annual community-wide Candlelight Ceremony will be held Tuesday, December 12, at the Christian Church, 15 S. 1st&nbsp;Street, in Herington beginning at 6:00 p.m. Everyone from the community is invited. RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged scam.

Just before 2;30p.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for theft by deception in the 2400 block of Players Circle in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 73-year-old man reported an unknown suspect scammed him out of money over the phone and on the computer. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $900.

RCPD: Man lost $900 in alleged phone, computer scam

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a teen for alleged sex crimes.

Just after 8a.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for indecent liberties with a child in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 15-year-old girl is reported as the victim and a known 16-year-old as the suspect. Due to the nature of the crime, police released no additional details.

16-year-old accused of sex crime in Manhattan

Shannon Rosauer, Marketing Communications Coordinator; Lindey Martinez and Jasmine Hammond, Community Health Workers; and Tonette Hammond, Supervisor from the Konza Prairie Community Health Center shared information with JC Breakfast Optimist Club members at the club’s Celebration of Optimism. The meeting was held November 29 at the Hampton Inn on South Washington Street in Junction City.

Shannon Rosauer stated that “There are currently 100 staff employed at Konza Prairie Community Health Center located at 361 Grant Avenue. In 2022 12,400 patients were served. 60% of those patients had Medicare, Medicaid, or no insurance.”

Jasmine Hammond shared that the role of the Community Health Workers is to “guide patients through a complicated health care system. We help them find the resources they need and sit next to them (if needed) to take them step by step through the process of getting the help needed.”

Shannon added that “Community Health Workers are professional problem solvers.”

Tonette Hammond added that “bridges are built over the smallest obstacles like finding a doctor, finding transportation to appointments, help with applying for social service and/or social security disability benefits, applying for housing and food resources, getting healthcare appointments at Konza, getting updated vaccines, getting a bus pass, providing interpreters in multiple languages and be an advocate to help patients improve their health needs.”

Other services provided at Konza Prairie Community Health Center include medical, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy, WIC grocery and nutrition assistance, tobacco cessation, and nutrition counseling.

Phase one of the Education Building project at 131 West 7th Street for the C.L. Hoover Opera House is nearing completion.&nbsp;

Opera House Co-Director Joe Markley said the building will be ready for the public to view at the end of December.&nbsp;

This project was prompted by the expanding youth education program. Youth from pre-K to 2th grade, and community theater could use the facility. The cost of the project is calculated at $2.5 million, with efforts still working on raising the final $500,000.

The building will also include offices for the Arts Council and Junction City Little Theater plus a studio for the Arts Council.

Opera House Education Building project moving forward

Geary County Commissioners have approved a motion asking Junction City to rescind their Dec. 5th deadline to consider stopping EMS service in the rural part of the county if the county does not make a payment for back EMS service. The city originally issued a demand for $802,556 but since that demand was issued the county has paid the city approximately $447 654.64.

County Commissioner Trish Giordano said that governing body is willing to compromise and negotiate. "All we're asking is detailed account of where our money is going." She moved for the city rescind the Dec. 5th deadline of stopping EMS service "or that's all the money that they will get." Giordano called for all future meetings on the subject to be held in open public session.

Commissioner Keith Ascher said when city and county commissioners left a joint meeting on Monday they were in agreement negotiations would continue but he observed that can't done if the Dec. 5th "deadline is hanging out there." Ascher added if the city can prove the county wrong on some things that's fine but the county needs to see it.

Commissioner Alex Tyson noted that service is bigger than what is said in the agreement ( that dates back to 1967 ). "If it shows that we have to pay more to provide that service to our community so be it once we get to that point I believe. " Tyson added that only occurs if you have those negotiations.

Elected officials confirmed that the EMS service is top notch.

Giordano added that a letter needs to be sent to the city asking that the Dec. 5th deadline be rescinded this week. She also confirmed that while it's something that they don't want to do the county has talked with another EMS provider. "Don't want to be without EMS."

Junction City Attorney Britain Stites attended the special county commission meeting at the Geary County Office Building on Wednesday, and noted that he would relay the information to the city manager and city commission but couldn't guarantee there would be action terms of a special city commission meeting. That would be up to the city commission.

Janet Young, Grandview Plaza City Clerk,&nbsp; was present to represent the citizens of that community and criticized the county for not providing notice to that city about the special meeting. " I'm very disappointed in my county commissioners for not notifying that we were looking at my citizens as not being able to have life saving services.&nbsp; We have the right to be at the table, we have the right to come to these meetings, we have the right to be notified so we can go to Junction City and express our concern, and then you guys want to give them an ultimatum." Young also added, "You all are messing with people's lives, plain and simple."

Young added that she would call the Junction City Commissioners about&nbsp; talking with the county commission because she also feels that there needs to be some negotiations. At the conclusion of the meeting she was added to the county and city&nbsp; email lists for future meeting notifications.

Fort Riley’s annual holiday tree lighting ceremony takes place Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Ware Parade Field, 500 Huebner Road.

Highlights of the event include a children’s choir from Fort Riley Child and Youth Services, the lighting of the 20-foot-tall tree and a visit from Santa Claus.&nbsp;Col. Michael Foote, Fort Riley Garrison Commander, is scheduled to speak before the switch is flipped to light the tree, which stands in front of the Fort Riley post headquarters. Children will have the opportunity to visit with Santa Claus indoors following the tree lighting. Hot chocolate and cookies will also be available.

The event is open to the public. Visitors who do not have a Department of Defense ID card can get a pass at the Visitor Control Center near the Henry Gate, Exit 301 off of I-70. Fort Riley holiday tree lighting ceremony set for Thursday evening

Lorna Rae Pierce is a senior at Junction City High School in the Fine Arts and Human Services Academy. She is the daughter of Larry Pierce, Jr., and Kathryn Pierce. Lorna Rae has three siblings who are Larry, Leslie, and Logan.

Lorna Rae has been an active participant in Class Committees and is currently serving as the Executive member of the Senior Class and Secretary of the National Honor Society. She placed 3rd in the State in Cross Country this year; is a Manager of the Boys Swim team and is a member of the Scholars Bowl. Outside of school activities include Girl Scouts and church youth group. She has completed nearly 200 hours of Community Service.

JCHS Track and Cross-Country Coach, Tim Testa stated that “Lorna Rae currently holds the JCHS school records in the 1600 and 3200 meters track events and the 5K Cross-Country school record. She has been recognized twice as an All-State Cross Country and Track athlete”.

Lorna Rae received a certificate from the JC Breakfast Optimist Club and a $25.00 gift certificate from JC’s BBQ &amp; Grill.
