The Junction City Blue Jays defeated the Bishop Carroll Golden Eagles on Friday night at Blue Jay Stadium by a score of 41-7.&nbsp;

The Blue Jays were excellent on both sides of the ball, forcing three turnovers in the first quarter, including two interceptions by sophomore Lovell Autry. The offense capitalized on all three turnovers, turning each one into touchdowns. They added another score late in the first half and Junction City led 27-0 at halftime.&nbsp;

The second half was very run heavy for the Blue Jays, and they led 41-0 for most of the second half. Bishop Carroll scored a late touchdown to get on the scoreboard.&nbsp;

It was a big night offensively for quarterback Brock Bazan and running back MC Taylor. For Bazan, he had three passing touchdowns, and for Taylor, he had three rushing touchdowns. In the last two games combined, Junction City has outscored their opponents 68-9.&nbsp;

Junction City head football coach Randall Zimmerman was pleased with his teams performance tonight. "I'm incredibly proud of the advancements our kids have made since week one," Zimmerman said. "We know we have a long ways to go yet, but I'm proud of where we are."&nbsp;

Junction City will host Washburn Rural next Friday night at Blue Jay Stadium on homecoming night.&nbsp;

The parade will start at 10:00 a.m. and begins at the corner of 10th and Washington. Along with the community parade, there will be a spirit rally that will start after the parade.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Other activities include the main street market, junk in the trunk, window decorating contests of students and businesses, sidewalk sales and food trucks.&nbsp;

The Junction City Blue Jays will host the Bishop Carroll Golden Eagles tonight at Blue Jay Stadium.&nbsp;

The Blue Jays are 2-1 on the season with wins over Dodge City and McPherson. Their lone loss against Hays in overtime was in week one. As for the Golden Eagles, they are 1-2 on the season, losing games to Wichita Northwest and Derby. In both of their losses their defense has allowed more than 50 points.&nbsp;

These two teams met last year&nbsp;in a thrilling game in Wichita with Junction City winning 28-21.&nbsp;

Junction City head football coach Randall Zimmerman knows that the Golden Eagles have talent all across their roster, but especially on the offensive side. "Their quarterback is committed D-1, their center is committed D-1, they've got some really good kids there," Zimmerman said. "Hopefully our kids are ready for it. I think we've had our best week of practice this year, so hopefully that shows up at game-time."

Following a vote at the September 8 meeting of the Kansas State University Foundation's board of trustees in Manhattan, two members were reelected to a three-year term on the foundation's board of directors, two members were newly elected to the board of directors and 35 new members were elected to four-year terms on its board of trustees. Additionally, 82 members were reelected to the board of trustees.

The KSU Foundation now has 346 trustees serving as the university's premier advocates, ambassadors and investors. The KSU Foundation's board of directors oversees management, control and supervision of the KSU Foundation's business and affairs.

Reelected to the board of directors were Leanne Caret, Argyle, Texas, and Sue Barsamian, Park City, Utah.

Mark Gardiner, Ashland, and John Buser, Dallas, Texas, were each elected to their first three-year term on the board of directors. Buser received his bachelor's degree in accounting from Kansas State University's College of Business Administration. Gardiner received his bachelor's degree in animal science and industry from K-State's College of Agriculture.

KSU Foundation elects 35 new members, reelects 82

The morning round of the Geary Community Health Care Foundation "Fall Classic" golf tournament at Rolling Meadows Golf Course has been delayed around one hour with a 9 a.m. tee time, according to golf course officials.&nbsp; Moderate to heavy showers and thundershowers fell throughout the early morning. The annual event is scheduled&nbsp; to have&nbsp; morning and afternoon rounds.

Broken Wing Ranch Ministries will host their Fall Festival this Saturday, September 23. The festival will be at their ranch located at 3581 Carr Rd, S. Junction City.

The event will begin at 1:00 p.m. with activities happening all day. The festival concludes at 8:00 p.m.&nbsp;

There will be activities for all ages. For the kids, there will be a bouncy house, scavenger hunt, face painting and much more. Along with these activities, there will be opportunities to meet some of the ministry horses, and you will also hear directly from Karen Carr, one of the founders of Broken Wing Ranch Ministries.&nbsp;&nbsp;

There will be a silent auction that opens at 1:00 and closes at 6:00 p.m. At 5:00 p.m., there will be a barbecue dinner provided by Bobby's food company, and at 6:00 p.m., there will be a concert featuring Savannah Chestnut and the Field Hands.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Texas man in connection with an ATM theft.

Just after 9:30p.m. Wednesday, police arrested 23-year-old Augustus Sherman Jr, 23, of Houston, Texas on a Riley County District Court warrant for burglary of a motor vehicle, two counts of theft, and two counts of criminal damage to property, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The charges stem from a 2022 incident in which Sherman was alleged to be involved in the theft of a vehicle and money from an ATM in Manhattan. 

The total bond was set at $12,000 and he remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report.

Geary County Schools and USD 475 is proud to announce that Eisenhower Elementary first grade teacher Mckenzie French has been named the district’s nominee for the Kansas Horizon Award Program.

“Ms. French is exactly the kind of educator that families want for their child. She is relentless in providing students with everything they need. Her students thrive due to her love and commitment,” said Amy Roether, Eisenhower Elementary principal.

The Kansas Horizon Award Program, sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education, identifies, and recognizes representatives of excellent teaching in classrooms across the state. The mission of the program is to recognize exemplary first-year teachers who perform in a way that distinguishes them as outstanding.

“It means a lot and feels really good to be named the district’s recipient for the Kansas Horizon Award,” said French. “I now know that I am on the right track, and it just reaffirms that I’m making a difference in my students.”

French, who is now in her second year of teaching in the district, came to Geary County Schools USD 475 last fall after graduating from Kansas State University in 2022 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education.

“The leadership of USD 475 is incredibly proud that Ms. French has joined our instructional family and is thriving in her second year of teaching,” said Dr. Debra Gustafson, Associate Superintendent of Geary County Schools USD 475. “We look forward to her future contributions and appreciate all who have assisted her along the way.”

In the classroom, French’s first grade students partake in engaging and exciting curriculum that helps them grow throughout the school year. Her students also learn how to believe in themselves through her positivity and infectious smile.

“My students are my whole world and I love being able to spend time with them. I have 18 little souls in my classroom that I get to impact every single day in a positive way. I love that. I get to see them grow from the beginning of the school year, starting out as kindergarten students, to ending the year as second grade students. They mean everything to me,” said French.

The Buhler native was not new to the district last fall as she not only student taught at Lincoln Elementary, but also did a practicum class for the Lions while at K-State.

“I love working for this district. Being at Lincoln, I told myself that I wanted to work here because everyone worked so well together. I knew instantly that this was the district that I wanted to work for,” said French. “My first impression of USD 475 six years ago totally impacted my decision to come back. Everyone works so well together and there is so much respect and communication throughout the district, which is really helpful.”

Kansas Horizon&nbsp;Award&nbsp;Program winners will be recognized at a special ceremony during the 2024 Kansas Exemplary Educators Network (KEEN) Conference, which is scheduled for Feb. 22-23, 2024, in Topeka.

She is relentless in providing students with everything they need. Her students thrive due to her love and commitment,” said Amy Roether, Eisenhower Elementary principal.The Kansas Horizon Award Program, sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education, identifies, and recognizes representatives of excellent teaching in classrooms across the state. They mean everything to me,” said French.The Buhler native was not new to the district last fall as she not only student taught at Lincoln Elementary, but also did a practicum class for the Lions while at K-State.“I love working for this district. Being at Lincoln, I told myself that I wanted to work here because everyone worked so well together. I knew instantly that this was the district that I wanted to work for,” said French. “My first impression of USD 475 six years ago totally impacted my decision to come back. Everyone works so well together and there is so much respect and communication throughout the district, which is really helpful.”Kansas Horizon&nbsp;Award&nbsp;Program winners will be recognized at a special ceremony during the 2024 Kansas Exemplary Educators Network (KEEN) Conference, which is scheduled for Feb. 22-23, 2024, in Topeka.

At the September 20 Celebration of Optimism, the JC Breakfast Optimist Club learned about the fiber optics project in Junction City. Aaron Wertenberger, Twin Valley’s Strategic Operations Manager, and Josh (Pete) Peterson, Twin Valley’s Sales Manager, were the club’s guest speakers. The presentation was given at the Celebration of Optimism Meeting this week.

Aaron stated that Twin Valley began in Miltonvale, Kansas in 1947. In 2006 the company tripled in size with some changes with Sprint. The company is now in its fourth generation of ownership. In 2021 and following the COVID Pandemic, the priority of having internet became more essential and Twin Valley expanded to Junction City. “This is a $20 million dollar project. We have been overwhelmed by the support of the Chamber of Commerce, civic clubs and other organizations who have welcomed us to the community”, Aaron said.

Pete stated that “the fiber is made of glass and is the size of a hair.” He also said “the current work being done is on the infrastructure to get the fiber optics to individual houses.” Aaron added that “the advantages of the fiber optics to the customers are that it is reliable and not affected by the weather other than power loss, it is more cost effective, and the internet access is faster. Think of it like traffic lanes on a highway. It is the difference between driving on a two-lane highway without fiber optics and driving on an eight-lane highway with fiber optics.” The project will continue through next year.

In another announcement, the JC Breakfast Optimist Club will participate in Match Day on October 17 online or in person at the Municipal Auditorium in Junction City from 7:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. On that day the Greater Geary Community Foundation will match donations at 50 cents on the dollar any donations over $25.00 up to $1,000. The Optimist’s donates $200.00 each year to 18 different youth organizations in Geary County. Match Day donations to the club are important to continue support for those groups.

Geary County Schools and USD 475 will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony tomorrow for Morris Hill Elementary School. The ribbon-cutting will take place at 1:30 p.m.

Morris Hill opened this school year and is located at 4722 Normandy Drive on Fort Riley.

The new building combines the former Jefferson Elementary and Morris Hill Elementary schools and is 99,000 square feet. Eventually, the school will accommodate 590 students. 

 Several new features are in the new school, such as the collaboration areas in each grade level, a separate gymnasium, cafeteria, library/media center, and specific art and science class rooms.

&nbsp; Junction City High School and FFA Chapter student Emma Hinds&nbsp; claimed Grand Champion accolades in Horticulture at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson. Hinds also recorded a first place showing in Floral Design. 

Other placings for the Blue Jays included Jamie Amerson placing first overall in Large PNC Project, Ava Oentrich earning third-place honors in Floral Design and Kourtney Dibben finishing fourth overall in Journalist Writing.&nbsp; Isabel and Hannah Huddleston both had strong showings in the Educational Display Division.&nbsp;&nbsp;

GREAT BEND&nbsp;– A host of butterflies, bees and bugs will all be in residence at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center’s (592 NE K 156 Hwy, Great Bend) annual Butterfly Festival from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 23. 

In addition to a variety of family-friendly activities, “The Instars,” Steve Craig and Amy Short, will present their “Butterfly Magic” show – a melding of humor and magic that illustrates the astonishing butterfly life cycle.

“This year promises to be a much better year for the monarch butterfly migration, as millions undertake their annual fall flight to Mexico,” said Pam Martin, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks education specialist.

Nets and tags will be available for those who want to capture and tag monarch butterflies ­– a critical citizen-science effort that helps track monarch migration activity. 

To do this, participants head out into the flower-filled fields and shelter belt around KWEC to spot monarchs, with tagging leaders stationed along the trail to help with the tagging process. For the past several years, monarchs tagged at the event were recovered at three Mexico roost sites.

New this year, a grant from the Kansas Wildscape Foundation’s Outdoors for Kansas (OK) Kids program is being used to sponsor a wide selection of outdoor-related prizes for youth attendees. Prizes include insect nets and carriers, field guides, nature vests, t-shirts, exploration kits, and more.&nbsp;

In addition to butterflies, festival guests can also expect to see walking stick insects, caterpillars, chrysalises, fluorescing scorpions; and enjoy fun activities like crafting and games. Plan to spend the morning, as door prizes will be presented around noon, along with free milkweed plants (one per family while supplies last). Then, stick around to visit the butterfly and pollinator garden to get wildflower planting ideas to implement at home.

The charges against&nbsp;Alvin Babcock, which included&nbsp;unlawfully harboring, concealing or aiding a person whom Babcock knew had committed a felony, or been charged with committing one, have been dismissed in the Geary County District Court.&nbsp;

The preliminary hearing scheduled for Junction City police detective Alvin Babcock In Geary County District Court on Friday was moved to Sept. 18th, according to a check with the District Court Clerk's office.

According to court records Babcock is charged with one felony count of Obstructing Apprehension or Prosecution. He is charged with unlawfully harboring, concealing or aiding a person whom Babcock knew had committed a felony, or been charged with committing one.&nbsp;

The hearing on Sept. 18th is scheduled at 9:30 a.m.

UPDATE:  Charges against Alvin Babcock have been dismissed in Geary County District Court

According to Garry Berges, the Geary County Emergency Management Director and County Fire Chief, a semi-trucks back tires caught on fire, which then spread to the trailer and then into a grass fire. The incident was on westbound I-70 near exit 306.&nbsp;

Westbound traffic is down to one lane and speed is currently reduced.&nbsp;

Geary County Fire Department and the Riley County Fire Department were both on the scene, as well as the Geary County Sherriff Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol.&nbsp;

Drivers should still use caution when going through the area.&nbsp;

There is a grass fire near exit 306 westbound on I-70.&nbsp;

A semi-truck caught on fire and that engulfed into a grass fire. The alternate route that drivers should use is exit 307.&nbsp;

All drivers should pay attention to traffic controls, slow down and be prepared to stop. Drivers on East-bound I-70 will need to use caution for smoke over the roadway.&nbsp;

On Wednesday afternoon, Jack and Karen Cunningham held a ribbon cutting to open their new business. "We are excited to be here in Junction City," Jack Cunningham said. "The ability to come back into a military community and to offer a service to this community and offer something that wasn't around is exciting."

 "We offer a unique, hands-on experience for creating candles and other products," Karen Cunningham said.

MANHATTAN — The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/105/" target="_blank">K-State 105 initiative</a>&nbsp;is supporting small business development in northwest Kansas through a collaborative approach that leverages the expertise and small business connections of higher education and statewide and regional partners.

Two universities — Kansas State University and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fhsu.edu/" target="_blank">Fort Hays State University</a>&nbsp;— as well as two K-State 105 partners —&nbsp;<a href="https://www.networkkansas.com/" target="_blank">NetWork Kansas</a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href="https://nwkeici.org/" target="_blank">Innovation Center</a>&nbsp;— are working together to expand the service offerings of the FHSU-led Small Business Development Center in northwest Kansas.

"Our K-State 105 initiative focuses on community engagement that&nbsp;drives&nbsp;economic impact and prosperity for Kansas and our 105 counties,"&nbsp;said Marshall Stewart, K-State senior vice president and chief of staff.&nbsp;"This type of innovative partnership that brings together higher education and economic development organizations across the state is exactly the type of work in which a next-generation land-grant university should engage.

"Through the partnership, K-State 105 is providing NetWork Kansas with funding that will go to resource partners and support entrepreneurship programming and technical assistance for small businesses in all 105 counties. 

"In this instance in northwest Kansas, NetWork Kansas will work with the Innovation Center to enhance the Kansas Small Business Development Center. The FHSU-led Kansas Small Business Development Center, or SBDC, operates as a network of eight regional economic development and business consulting centers that currently serve all 105 counties in the state.

"The businesses and communities of northwest Kansas will benefit greatly from this investment in professional expertise and better access to essential resources the SBDC and the Innovation Center will begin delivering in just a few short months," said Tisa Mason, president of Fort Hays State University. "This initiative will ensure our best business and economic development experts are working every day to advance economic prosperity throughout the High Plains.

"The SBDC and Innovation Center partnership will serve a larger number of clients in northwest Kansas than each organization can serve individually. The partners ultimately expect to serve 432 clients, help start 16 new businesses and conduct 60 capital transactions in fiscal year 2024.

"This new partnership will allow us to collectively deliver more assistance than we have been able to do individually," said Greg Jordan, state director of the SBDC. "Small businesses in western Kansas will reap the benefit of us all working more closely together to help them start, grow and thrive."

"Our shared efforts in the days ahead will contribute significantly to economic prosperity in northwest Kansas," said Scott Sproul, president and CEO of the Innovation Center.

"We congratulate Fort Hays State University, the Kansas Small Business Development Center and the Innovation Center on this impactful advancement and look forward to partnering further on K-State 105," said Erik Pedersen, president and chief operating officer of NetWork Kansas. 

"This initiative will work to integrate the resources on campus, as well as statewide, with Kansas small businesses in a way that will strengthen communities, create jobs and increase capital investment. The K-State 105 funding that will support this initiative comes from the annual state investment that K-State 105 received for fiscal year 2024.

The initiative leverages the statewide K-State Research and Extension network to deliver the full breadth of the university's collective knowledge and solution-driven innovation to every Kansan, right where they live and work.

Discover the beauty and majesty of America’s Great Plains&nbsp;in the work of award-winning photographer Michael Forsberg. Traveling 100,000 miles over four years, Forsberg crisscrossed the Plains from Canada to Mexico, capturing the wildlife, habitats, and conservation challenges in the heart of the continent.

Originally a book project, Forsberg set out to capture what some outside observers call "flyover country" in an attempt&nbsp;to bring attention to and build appreciation for this often-overlooked&nbsp;region.&nbsp;Inspiring, informative, and timely – the exhibit is a love letter to this endangered ecosystem.

The Junction City Lady Jays volleyball team will host their only home match of the year tonight against Great Bend.

The Lady Jays are currently 1-5 on the season. Despite the record, Junction City head volleyball coach Katie DeHoff remains optimistic heading into tonight's matchup and for the rest of the regular season. "Our record does not necessarily indicate how we have played this season," DeHoff said.&nbsp; "We are really showing a lot of growth. We are focusing on the things that we do well and are starting to focus on things on the other side of the net."&nbsp;

In addition to it being their only home match of the season, tonight is also senior night. There are three seniors on the team and they are: Armani Coleman, Anja VonSprecklesen and Sara Rexrode. All will be honored prior to the match. "They have quite literally been with me since they were freshmen," DeHoff said. "It's been really cool to see them grow into a program that they are really proud of and to really grow into their roles as leaders."&nbsp;

The varsity matchup tonight between the Lady Jays and Great Bend is a dual, which is best of five sets. The varsity match follows the senior night ceremony and is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.&nbsp;

The freshmen and JV teams will also be active tonight. Freshmen will be in a dual with Topeka West in the Aux at 5:00 p.m. and JV will play against Great Bend at 5:00 p.m. in the main gym.&nbsp;
