RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged criminal damage to property in Manhattan.

Just after 1p.m. Friday, officers filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 1400 block of McCain Lane in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 20-year-old man reported an unknown suspect spray painted his truck's headlights, bumper, and front license plate.

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $3,000. &nbsp;Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. <a></a><a></a><a></a><a>Abilene, Kan.- A long-time fan of the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo in Abilene is now behind the microphone, working the rodeo.</a>

As a kid, Scott Grover’s parents brought him to the rodeo when they visited friends in Abilene. He watched announcer Phil Gardenhire and rodeo clown Lecile Harris, both legends in the sport, and thought, ‘maybe someday I can do what they’re doing.’

And now he is. The Camden Point, Mo. man will announce this year’s Abilene Rodeo.

Grover, who grew up in Morrowville, Kan., didn’t have a rodeo background. While in junior college, he helped with a youth rodeo. One day, the announcer got sick, and Grover, who had shown interest in the job, got to handle announcing duties.

After graduating from Kansas State University in 2001, he taught high school agriculture in Council Grove for four years, then began announcing rodeos full time.

He was a team roper for a short time, but his talents were with public speaking. “I dabbled in team roping a little bit, but I was not very good at it. Luckily God gave me a voice to talk about rodeo.”

He is part of the PBR World Finals announcing team and announces PBR Velocity Tour events and PRCA rodeos as well. He works about 40 events a year. He has been selected as the announcer for the RAM Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo six times, the 2014 RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo, the 2014 National Finals Steer Roping, and is the 2017 WPRA Announcer of the Year.

Grover married Becky McGee, a former Miss Rodeo Missouri, ten years ago. The couple has three children: son Statler, and daughters Lano and Clemmie Mae.

Grover loves rodeo. “I’m a fan of the sport,” he said. “I didn’t grow up in the industry and my parents weren’t cowboy people, but I fell in love with it at an early age.

“Being able to talk about rodeo and tell the stories of rodeo and cowboys and cowgirls is what I love the most about it.”

He’s delighted to work the rodeo where his love for rodeo began.

“I am beyond excited for this rodeo,” he said. “It’s like I’ve been waiting since I was ten years old to be inside that arena.”

<a>The Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo takes place August 1-4 at the fairgrounds in Abilene. Performances are at 7:30 pm nightly. There will be a ribbon cutting for 52 newly constructed family housing units at Fort Riley on Tuesday at 3 p.m. The location will be at 66502 DeFranco Place in the Warner Peterson Neighborhood.&nbsp;

Guests can tour the new homes following the ribbon cutting. The homes feature energy efficient appliances and inclement weather safe rooms.

KDOT provided an opportunity this week to review concepts for a proposed Taylor Road interchange off I-70 on the southwest edge of Junction City.

The project is in the discovery phase. The aging bridge over I-70 needs to be replaced&nbsp; and with that possibility comes an opportunity to increase access and encourage additional economic development in the area. The project is also studying local roadway connections from the potential I-70 interchange to Srauss Boulevard that may be completed by local entities.

The discovery phase is on track to be completed by the end of the summer.

Overall project development could take three to four years.

Officials heard about this development but have not yet completed gathering all the details. "We're still looking as far as what happened as far as the city and county commitment back in 2003, I believe, when there was a bonded indebtedness. " The project was funded by the city, county and CVB. Final debt payment is scheduled this year.

Just after 6:00 p.m. Thursday, a 25- and 28-year-old male inmates&nbsp; reported inmate Shawn Samuelson, 22, of Manhattan, hit the 25-year-old victim in the head and inmates Travell Hairston, 32, and Jarman Morgan, 45, both of Manhattan punched the 28-year-old victim multiple times, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Both victims were transported to Via Christi for treatment of lacerations. Samuelson, Hairston, and Morgan face additional requested charges of aggravated battery and remain confined in the Riley County Jail.

DICKINSON COUNTY —A Kansas pilot avoided injury after an accident just before 5p.m. Wednesday in Dickinson County.

A 1994 Bell helicopter piloted by 42-year-old Samuel Sutton of Topeka was eastbound spraying a corn field at 2750 Rain Road north of Chapman, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The helicopter struck a&nbsp; power line and went down. There were no injuries.

Fleming has worked in healthcare for more than 20 years. During the pandemic she worked at the VA Hospital in Oklahoma City. Fleming has worked in mental health care within medical environments and has an extensive background in administration and business management.

The Geary County Historical Society invites all members of the community to its upcoming STEAM Saturday event, "Summer Science," on Saturday, July 15th.

 This come-and-go style program will be held at the GCHS Museum at 530 N. Adams between 1:00-3:30 p.m. and is intended for all ages. There will be kite building, ice cream making, and summer-themed art creation!

No RSVP is required, and admission is free, though donations are appreciated. Questions should be directed to Lisa Highsmith, Director of Programs and&nbsp; Education at&nbsp;<a href="mailto:GearyHistoryPrograms@gmail.com" target="_blank">GearyHistoryPrograms@gmail.com</a>.&nbsp;

Museum sets next STEAM Saturday event

RILEY COUNTY —Improperly stored fireworks debris is being blamed for a rural Kansas fire.

Just after midnight Wednesday, the Riley County Fire District #1 was called out to the report of a structure fire at <a href="https://goo.gl/maps/cGuJRhcT1MGpdoHq8">12261 Walnut Creek Road </a>in northern Riley County, according to a media release.

First arriving crews found a garage fully engulfed in fire, which had spread to the attic space of the home. Volunteer firefighters were able to stop the fire from causing further damage to the home.

Crews successfully extinguished the blaze and stayed on scene for several hours to check on hot spots and complete mop-up of the burned area. Four occupants and a cat were evacuated safely from the home, no injuries were reported.

Fire crews determined the cause of the fire to be leftover firework debris stored in a trash bin inside the garage. The fire caused extensive damage to the structure and contents, including two vehicles, tools and several pieces of equipment.

The total estimated loss was not available at the time of the media release by Riley County Fire District #1.

Leftover fireworks debris caused rural Riley Co. house fire

A&nbsp; 2013 Toyota Tacoma driven by Charles Danley, 27, of Fort Riley was westbound on Fort Riley Blvd near. mile marker 186, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The pickup passed a 2016 Ram 1500 driven Herbert Havens, 19, of Zanesville, Ohio on the shoulder. This caused the two vehicles to collide. 

The Ram then slid off the road into a guard rail.&nbsp; EMS transported a female passenger of the Ram to Via Christi for treatment of neck pain. 

RCPD issued Danley&nbsp; a citation for improper driving on a laned roadway and reckless driving.&nbsp; There were no other injuries reported.

There will be a Junction City community blood drive on Thursday, July 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday, July 21 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. as the Municipal Building downtown.

Appointments are preferred and can be made by calling 1-800-RED CROSS ( 1-800-733-2767 ) or online at <a href="https://www.redcrossblood.org/">RedCrossBlood.org </a>by using the Blood Donor App. Walk-ins are welcome with appointments given priority.
