Registrations are being accepted for the 28th annual <a href="https://www.junctioncitychamber.org/christmas-parade.html">Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade</a> sponsored by Eagle Radio and the Geary County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The parade is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 24th at 5:30 p.m.

The parade theme will be "A Christmas Carol" where you can bring your favorite holiday song to life.

There will be five awards including the $200 Mayor's Award for Best Use of Theme ( Classic Christmas ), which is sponsored by the Central National Bank, $150 Chamber Award for Best Commercial Float and the $150 County Commission Award for Best Non-Profit / Religious / Government Award which is sponsored by the Geary County CVB.

There will be the $150 Founder's Day Award for Creativity and Originality sponsored by DEL Motors and the $150 Youth Award for Youth Involvement sponsored by the Junction City Family YMCA.

A Christmas Carol is the theme for the 28th annual Christmas Parade

MANHATTAN, Kan – Kansas 4-H youth development specialist Beth Hinshaw knows how important meaningful family time is during the holidays, and how it may be a challenge to come up with ideas on how to spend that precious time together.&nbsp;

That’s one of the very reasons why the national 4-H program has published a&nbsp;<a href="https://4-h.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/08094637/4H-at-Home-Holiday-Activity-Guide-and-Cookie-Making-Recipes-2020.pdf" target="_blank">holiday activity guide.</a>&nbsp;

“[The Holiday Activity Guide] has great ways to spend quality time with people, and we can learn so much from our family when we see them at the holidays,” Hinshaw said. “And to be able to have these learning experiences with them – that'll make a memory for us as well.”&nbsp;

The Holiday Guide, she said, contains an array of fun activities, such as making ornaments, family story time, visual art projects, and many food recipes.&nbsp;

“One of the things I think about, in my own experience, is the things I learned in the kitchen, during the holidays from my grandmothers,” Hinshaw said.&nbsp;

Within the Holiday Guide is a “cookie book” - listing more than 20 sweet holiday recipes to make together. One of Hinshaw’s favorites is the no-bake cookies, a recipe from a Kansas 4-H member.&nbsp;

“In the holiday guide, there are several activities that are STEM and math-focused, but as you read through and think about it, they’re fun as well,” Hinshaw said. “That’s one of the things we pride ourselves on in 4-H -- to have those experiential, fun learning activities.”&nbsp;

Food and STEM are both project areas 4-Hers may already be involved in, and the activity guide includes an additional area important during the holidays: service.&nbsp;

“It shares how you might put together a winter coat drive for your community,” Hinshaw said. “Or how you might make fleece scarves by hand for the homeless.”&nbsp;

4-H Holiday Guide contains many fun and educational activities for the season 

"Frost &amp; Flour" is the name for a new full service bakery and ice cream shop that Hannah Hasbrouck plans to open at 725 North Washington Street in downtown Junction City. The specific opening date is still to be determined but Hasbrouck expects that to occur this year.&nbsp;

Hasbrouck noted that among the many products that will be served there will be mashups such as cookie ice cream sandwiches and loaded brownie sundaes.

Hasbrouck's vision for the store came about because of a recent Mainstreet study that identified a need for the community.

Full service bakery and ice cream shop is planned for downtown

Fire destroyed the home belonging to Robert and Tammy Smith at the northwest corner of the K-18 - Sage Road intersection in Dickinson County early Friday morning. According to Paul Froelich Fire Chief for Dickinson County Rural Fire District One, they both the escaped the burning house. Two dogs also escaped but one dog died.&nbsp;

Froelich estimated the damage at approximately $250,000. Cause of the blaze which was reported about 1:30 a.m. is being listed as undetermined due to the hot nature of the fire.

Eight fire trucks from Dickinson County and four from Geary County responded to the scene along with one from Fragrant Hill and one from Sheridan Township.

Froelich noted that the occupants escaped with only the clothing they were wearing. Churches and the Red Cross are providing assistance.

Kansas children are learning more about the wheat grown in their communities and loving eating more whole grain-rich foods, thanks to a federal grant that is enabling school districts and daycares across the state to purchase equipment and source locally produced flour.

According to the requirements for USDA’s National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program, which sets guidelines for the nation’s feeding programs for K-12 students, 80 percent of weekly grains offered at lunch and breakfast must be considered whole grain-rich. Whole grain-rich foods are defined as foods containing at least 50 percent whole grains and the remaining grains must be enriched. Under the Child and Adult Care Food Program, the USDA program that provides reimbursements for daycares and other qualifying programs, meals must include one whole grain item daily.

“The impact of Child Nutrition program operators to improve the quality of grain foods served, access to local food sources, agricultural education and appealing whole grain recipe development is to be commended,” said Cindy Falk, nutrition educator for Kansas Wheat. “It is a win, win for students' health and nutrition needs, local wheat farmers and communities.”

In 2022, the Kansas Department of Education received a USDA Farm to School grant to support the planning, development and implementation of farm to school programs. The department’s Child Nutrition and Wellness program — which works to help incorporate local foods in meals and snacks — divided the grant into sub-grants of $100,000 to 12 Child Nutrition Program sponsors, which included school, childcare and summer meal programs. The funding facilitated equipment purchases so these programs could utilize locally milled, whole grain flour as well as new whole grain recipes and culinary training for food service staff on how to bake with whole grain flour.

“We partnered with the Kansas Wheat Commission to improve access to local foods, specifically local flour, in Kansas Child Nutrition Programs through comprehensive farm-to-school programming that includes local procurement and agricultural education efforts,” said Barb Depew, RD, LD, Farm to Plate project director for the Kansas State Department of Education.

At a recent quarterly meeting of the Farm to Plate project, the grant recipients shared an update about the equipment they purchased and how they are incorporating whole grain foods into their programs.

“It was exciting to learn about the diversity of programs across the state and the children they are feeding,” Falk said. “The primary goals include improving the quality of grain foods served, expanding freshly baked menu items and increasing access to local foods.”

Starting with a direct farm connection, students in Greeley County grew white wheat on the school campus for USD 200, which they harvested and cleaned with the help of a local elevator. Christina Marquardt, the district’s nutrition services manager, reported the grain mill the district purchased is being used to grind those wheat kernels into whole wheat flour for breads, rolls, garlic bread and hamburger buns to feed 200 K-12th students — using 25 pounds of whole grain flour per week.

Other grant recipients purchased equipment for their school kitchens. According to Food Service Director Laura Fails, USD 320 in Wamego purchased two oven racks and a second 40-quart mixer bowl. The purchases allow for multiple menu items to be produced at the same time with less labor and more output. Overall, the staff serves between 1,100 and 1,300 students per day.

“We have been baking for years with Farmer Direct Foods stone-ground whole white wheat flour and the staff makes all their breads from scratch,” Fails said. “A student favorite is their rich 100% whole wheat chocolate cake and students do not realize that it is a whole grain product.”

Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 also used the grain to purchase locally produced flour and equipment. Stephanie Smith, child nutrition director, sourced Willie’s Pride whole wheat flour and bread flour from the K-State Department of Grain Science and Industry’s mill. They also used funds to purchase a dough divider and rounder, which is used for pizza crust, hamburger buns and rolls. Every morning they serve breakfast bread to about 1,200 children, followed by 3,800 lunches.

“We have already purchased 4,500 pounds of local flour this year,” Smith shared. “We are looking forward to baking up more delicious homemade menu items utilizing local products.”

The new equipment and flour purchases are a win-win combination across the state. Jordan Back, food service manager at Oswego USD 504, reported their new 60-quart mixer helps them serve three to four homemade bread items per week, including hamburger buns. Back noted they are sourcing Hudson Cream Flour from Stafford County Flour Mills, which he says is of fantastic quality.

“Although our recipe is 60 percent whole wheat flour and 40 percent white flour, the students and adults cannot identify it as whole grain bread,” shared Back. “Kids love it and we’ve already seen about a 10 percent increase in our participation, and I genuinely believe a lot of it has to do with the homemade bread items that we’ve introduced.”

Other districts are expanding the variety of products they are preparing, including USD 445 in Coffeyville.

“The staff is so happy with our new equipment and proud of what they are doing,” said Casey Worden, child nutrition services director. “While the grant was important for the children, it also makes the staff proud of the variety of foods they are preparing like hot pockets, coffee cake, garlic knots, waffles and muffins incorporating local berries.”

Beyond school districts, other providers used the sub-grants to encourage the use of local products, instill a love of baking and teach life skills. Child Care Links is a network of daycare home providers in 22 counties. Director Beth Carlton reported 10 home providers received bread kits, which included a mixer, baking utensils and pans. That equipment was used to involve daycare children in making biscuits, pancakes and pizza.

“You know, sometimes just sitting at the desk, we do not always realize the impact that it’s making until photos come across,” said Carlton, “And it really does make your day and remind you why you’re doing the work that you do, and it boosts your motivation to keep going.”

In 2022, Duran accepted the challenge to be part of the transition team with the acquisition of what is now Stormont Vail Health’s Flint Hills Campus, ultimately choosing to stay as part of the leadership team.&nbsp; While her primary responsibility was oversight of clinical operations, her ability to create an environment of trust and respect during a challenging time uniquely displayed her leadership skills.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged domestic battery in Manhattan.

Just before 2a.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for domestic battery involving a 56-year-old woman as the victim and a man she knew as the suspect, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Police arrested 42-year-old Eric Fisher of Bucklin, Kansas on probable cause offenses of aggravated battery, aggravated domestic battery, criminal threat, and aggravated intimidation of a witness.

 Fisher was issued a total bond of $250,000 and was confined at the time of this report. Due to the nature of the crime reported (domestic) no additional information will be released.

SW Kansas man accused of domestic battery in Manhattan

SALINA —&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>&nbsp;has announced Bill Genereux, professor in the department of integrated studies, as this year's recipient of the Rex McArthur Family Faculty Award for excellence in teaching and research.

Genereux has been a faculty member at K-State Salina since 2004 and instructs classes for the campus's computer systems technology, digital media technology and web development technology degrees.

"I am honored and humbled to be receiving the Rex McArthur Family Faculty Award,"&nbsp;Genereux said.&nbsp;"I looked at the list of past recipients of this award, and many of them are mentors and have encouraged me in my career. To think that I have received the same award as people that I look up to is a humbling experience. With this, I hope to be able to help other instructors win awards and advance their careers."

Some of Genereux's interest in technology was developed in the late 1980s while in the Navy. One of his first experiences with computer networks was helping to install a local area network for Macs and PCs aboard the U.S. Battleship Missouri,&nbsp;a skill that he still uses today.

Much of what he teaches involves instilling technology literacy in students and helping them learn more about working and living in a digital world. More and more of his instruction now consists of using cutting-edge technologies for telling stories to prepare students to be at the forefront of technological innovations.

While Genereux enjoys teaching students, he also finds the time to research how technology impacts society and helps students gain a constructive, helpful and optimistic vision of what it means to be a human being in the digital age.

He is interested in learning and writing about what we are giving up by letting machines and AI do the creative things that people enjoy doing,&nbsp;such as drawing or making art.&nbsp;According to Genereux,&nbsp;while the computer might be more efficient and&nbsp;can&nbsp;save time, creating art is ultimately a human activity to be enjoyed by humans.

"Much of what I have learned in studying for my doctorate is how technological advances cut both ways,"&nbsp;said Genereux.&nbsp;"It gives society something that is cool but also takes something else away at the same time,&nbsp;and sometimes we tend to downplay the bad side of that.

Genereux added that he&nbsp;wants&nbsp;his&nbsp;students to think about the technology they adopt and what they are trying to achieve.

"If you want to be in the field of technology," he said,&nbsp;"you must be a lifelong learner, or else it will move right out from under your feet,&nbsp;and what you know will become obsolete."

Genereux, who lives in&nbsp;Clyde,&nbsp;earned an associate degree from Cloud County in 1997, a bachelor's degree in computer science from Kansas Wesleyan University in 1999, a master's degree in internetworking and telecommunications from Fort Hays State University in 2005,&nbsp;and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction with a technology education emphasis in 2015 from K-State.

For this year's Match Day with the Greater Geary&nbsp;Community Foundation, Live Well Geary County received a total of $3,729.50.&nbsp; $2,503.00 came from donations, which allowed Live Well to receive another&nbsp;$1226.50 from the Match Day.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Susan Jagerson noted that the support from the community and partners is appreciated. The funds will be used in Live Well programs geared to advance healthy lifestyles in Geary County.&nbsp; &nbsp;

David Starks, Senior District Executive for the Konza District of Boy Scouts of America, was the guest speaker at the November 9th JC Breakfast Club meeting.&nbsp; He told the Optimists that “130 boys and girls are involved in scouting in Junction City. The ages range from kindergarten through 21 years of age. 

Leadership development, career exploration, character building, camping skills, first aid and physical fitness are only some of the topics covered when scouts are involved over multiple years. The ultimate achievement is for a scout to be an Eagle Scout. Less than 4% reach this goal.”

There are 87 scout units in 32 counties in 5 districts across North Central and Northwest Kansas.

David also shared that “recently there has been a 5% growth in female scouts and a 6% overall growth in the total membership in scouting.”

JC Breakfast Optimist Club Learns About Boy Scouts

WABAUNSEE COUNTY&nbsp; —Law enforcement authorities are investigating another report of cattle theft in Kansas.

A reward has been offered for information that leads to the arrest of those who stole more than a dozen calves and a cow from a rancher near Wamego, according to the Wabaunsee County Sheriff.

The livestock was stolen from Dan Oeding approximately 5 miles southeast of Wamego on Oct. 10. Livestock missing include&nbsp;Black Angus or Wagyu calves, one red calf and one Black Angus cow.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact the Wabaunsee County Sheriff at 785-765-3323.

In August, Reno County Sheriff's Office said Circle H Cattle Company reported fifteen 400 to 500 pound calves stolen from the area of US 50 and Sterling Road, according to a social media report. The cattle went missing sometime between July 29, and August 6.

In mid-July, the Kansas Livestock Associated reported 17-head of 200-350 pound calves were stolen ten miles northeast of Atwood, according to a media release from the Rawlins County sheriff's office. The calves&nbsp; carried fresh brands of V arrow high on the right hip.

In April, the Sheridan County Sheriff's Department asked for the public's assistance in a case involving eighty 80 head of cattle missing from South of Hoxie, Kansas.

Reginald Eggleston, Superintendent of Schools, said this the third year that the District has been able to encourage students to take advantage of the program. Junction City Commission approves MPC /  BZA member appointments

MANHATTAN - On Wednesday morning, Governor Laura Kelly hosted a Healthy Workers, Healthy Economy tour roundtable in Manhattan, where the discussion was focused on how expanding Medicaid would benefit the Kansas agriculture industry.

Concerns about the current healthcare issues including long wait times, and lack of mental health resources were the focus of the discussion between farmers, ranchers and legislators participating in the roundtable.

“Agriculture is the backbone of the Kansas economy, yet our farmers and ranchers often face unnecessary obstacles to accessing essential care,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “Expanding Medicaid would protect rural hospitals and lower healthcare costs for everyone – including ag businesses –so our agriculture industry and economy can continue to flourish.”&nbsp;

More than $29 million in new annual health care spending would be generated in the counties combined.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On Saturday, the Geary County Veterans Alliance Veterans Day Program is at the C.L. Hoover Opera House at 11:00 a.m.

The program will honor veterans and feature the presentation and posting of colors by the Junction City High School JROTC program. There will also be a musical presentation at the event.

The keynote speaker for the Veterans Day program is Richard Hodgson.

He is a veteran of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and also deployed for two combat tours in Baghdad in 2004 and 2008 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Hodgson retired from the Army in 2012. He served for 24 years and earned several awards throughout his service. Currently, Hodgson is the JROTC instructor at Junction City High School.

Monday night, Dr. Reginald Eggleston, USD 475 Superintendent of Schools, recognized exemplary students with the 3R Award. The award is given to students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of respect, responsibility and building positive relationships. Earning recognition&nbsp; were Ruth Kim (Fort Riley Middle School), Zyrel Dela Cruz (Junction City Middle School), Lillian Hayworth (Junction City Middle School), Emmy Cummins (Lincoln Elementary) and Abigail Sparbanie (Morris Hill Elementary).

Other awards were presented including a Purple Star Certificate of Recognition to Fort Riley Middle School, Junction City Middle School, Morris Hill Elementary and Lincoln Elementary for demonstrating a major commitment to supporting students and their families connected to the United States military.

Eisenhower Elementary teacher McKenzie French was honored on for being named the USD 475 nominee for the Kansas Horizon Award Program. Spring Valley Elementary early childhood teacher Kelsey Mann and Fort Riley Middle School math teacher Sara Elliott were also recognized in front of the board for being the district’s nominees for the Kansas Teacher of the Year.

Entries should be submitted in person between 4-5 p.m. at the Hometown Christmas event at the Municipal Building. Judging will begin at&nbsp; 6:45 p.m. on December 2nd. The overall winner will be announced at 7 p.m. along with the winner of a window decorating contest.
