The Third Annual Breakfast with Santa program will be held on Saturday, December 2 at the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library. This is a come and go event that will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at Noon. It is open to all families and there is no preregistration or admission fee.

Here kids can visit Santa, tell him their Christmas wishes and have their pictures taken. The Junction City Pilot Club will also be on hand to help them decorate their own, homemade sugar cookie. In addition, there will be games to play and a take home bag. A light breakfast will also be served.

The Breakfast with Santa activities will be spread throughout the library, from the meeting room to the Young People’s Department. Blue Jay football team hosts Awards night, celebrates 2023 season

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting in rural Pottawatomie County and have made an arrest.

Just after 6a.m., sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call of a shooting at a residence in the 4700 block of Blackjack Road in rural St. George,&nbsp; according to Sheriff Shane Jager.

First responders&nbsp; found an adult who had suffered a single gunshot wound. EMS transported the victim to a Topeka hospital.

During the investigation, deputies identified a suspect identified as 35-year-old Matthew R. Young of Rural Wamego. With the assistance of the Riley County Police Department, deputies located Young in Manhattan and arrested him on requested charges of Attempted Murder in second degree, according to Jager.

The sheriff's office did not release the name of the victim.

The Parade is scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24th. The theme is a Christmas Carol. To sign up call the Chamber at 785-762-2632 or go to info@jcacc.org.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Cadillac&nbsp;Deville driven by Robert Gerard Enriquez, 59, Junction City, was northbound Kansas 15 just north of 340th Street.

The car left the roadway to the east, traveled through the ditch, a fence, went airborne and rolled into a field.

Angel Tree supports over 300 families in Geary County that need a little extra support during the holiday season.&nbsp;

A box will be at the Winter Market to collect donations December 14 from 4-6pm located at 1025 S. Washington Street in Junction City (JC Naz).&nbsp;

Families who are in need of extra holiday cheer with Angel Tree must apply by December 1st with applications at the library. Approving applications for income hardships and those below poverty level.

The Winter Market will have local vendors to shop at. Santa will also make an appearance! Geary County Commissioners have given tentative approval to a redistricting option that puts a portion of Fort Riley in each of the three commission districts.&nbsp; Commissioner Keith Ascher estimated it would create a result of about 12,000 people total per commission district.

County legal counsel will develop a resolution for final consideration by the governing body, possibly as early as next week.

Geary County Commission tackles redistricting

The news contained in a report to the Geary County Commission Monday from Regional Director and Stormont Vail Health Flint Hills Campus Interim CEO Tracy Duran, reflected growth at the hospital.

Duran reported there has been an increase in average daily inpatient volume from 4.4 per day in 2022 to 8 in October of 2023. Emergency Department volume has jumped from about 1,000 up to nearly 1,200 patients.

Between them, two doctors from Manhattan will help patients in rural health three days a week.&nbsp;

There will be future efforts toward procedural pain management treatment.

The workforce is up from 221 in January to 263 now. There are 27 job openings. Nurses and respiratory therapists are needed, and there will be a campaign to obtain respiratory therapists.

Revenues are up and with shared expenses with Stormont Vail in Topeka costs are down. Stormont Vail Health Flint Hills campus is moving closer to breaking even and there is a budget plan to get there by April of 2024.

Commissioner Trish Giordano stated, "So many have complimented the E-R, " while Commissioner Alex Tyson noted "Everybody is smiling and talking in the building."

Rural America has always been inhabited by optimists. People who accepted living in remote corners of the country came with challenges and even a little loneliness. Maybe they didn’t have any better options, like the homesteaders who populated Kansas. Or maybe they understood they were trading one set of challenges for another and, like a weed, loneliness can take root about anywhere.

My recent travels have made it clear that nothing has really changed, at least in rural Kansas. The optimists are still there. So are the challenges, but the biggest problem is the same as it’s always been. There’s simply not enough people to fulfill all of the opportunities available in the small cities, unincorporated towns and farms that dot the landscape across the countryside. Time after time, it’s the same story. Jobs are plentiful, but the bodies to fill them aren’t there. The jobs not being done are across all sectors and all pay scales, from professionals like doctors, lawyers and veterinarians to blue collar workers like truck drivers, plumbers and welders. 

The journey to these shortages has been slow. As difficult as it is to attract someone new to a small town, it can often be harder to retain someone who already lives there. I’m a perfect example. It was always explicit I’d leave my small town to attend college. That was the message I heard from the time I started kindergarten until I graduated high school. I assumed leaving was a one-way ticket because the chorus was leave and get an education. There was no verse encouraging me to return, and I’ve met plenty of colleagues with similar backgrounds who heard the same song. So, most of us left, got our degrees and went searching for opportunities elsewhere. We got married, had kids and settled into comfortable lives elsewhere .I suspect this is partly because more populous places seemed more prosperous to those of us in our youth. Life was a lot less convenient as a teenager when the nearest movie theatre was 30 miles away and your favorite restaurant was a similar distance in the other direction. We were searching for amenities our towns didn’t offer. No one considered why they weren’t available or what message was received by our wanting. 

Maybe because I’m now older, I look at things differently. In my recent travels it’s evident people are noticing the little things and working to find solutions. There’s efforts to keeps schools open, secure the local grocery store or help an entrepreneur get established on Main Street. The negatives of rural life are now treated as temporary obstacles that can be overcome. This includes recasting nothing as one of the key amenities of living in a small town, like no traffic, no waiting and no commute.

Reversing a generation or two of pessimism will take time, but I’m optimistic it’s possible. Maybe rural Kansas creates optimists rather than attracts them. After all, it’s tough to not be filled with hope after seeing all the opportunities available. Now we just need others to notice.

The Army has announced that this year's German and Italian prisoner of war remembrance ceremony at Fort Riley is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 16 at 10 a.m. The annual ceremony is held in remembrance of the POWs who lived and worked at Fort Riley between 1943 and 1946, specifically the 62 Germans and 11 Italians now buried here.

German and Italian Remembrance Ceremony 

On Monday, Nov. 13, I-70 traffic through Junction City is scheduled to open to unrestricted winter travel through March 2024, following the completion of Phase One construction.

Following the opening of I-70, KDOT plans to temporarily close K-57 from Flint Hills Boulevard to the ramps south of I-70 for pavement replacement. Traffic will need to detour on I-70, access ramps to I-70 will remain open. K-57 is scheduled to reopen in December, weather permitting.

Veterans Day is observed in Junction City

The 8th JC Statue, Big Red One, was unveiled in downtown Junction City Saturday morning at the corner of 10th &amp; Washington. It reminds us of the history of the 1st Infantry Division dating back to it's origins in 1917.

According to a social media post by Saint Francis Xavier Catholic School, through parish community generosity, they were able to raise $13,910 in donations and $6,097.50 in matching funds through the Greater Geary Community Foundation.  A total of $20,007.50 was raised for the St. Xavier School locker room renovation project.

The Geary USD 475 Board of Education has approved the AYPYN contract, which will allow the District to partner with the YMCA to provide after-school opportunities for all secondary students with military connections. 

AYPYN will provide funding directly to the YMCA in the amount that does not exceed $250,000 per year.
