BY JULIA DEBES Kansas Wheat Commission&nbsp; This is day four of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

At any other time of the year, rain would be more than welcome. But for farmers with combines ready to roll, harvest delays due to rain add insult to injury for a crop stricken by drought. For some, however, rains arrived just in time to fill grain heads, resulting in better-than-expected final results.&nbsp;

Near Americus, America, harvest is in full swing for Jacqueline Leffler. Starting strong at the beginning of the week, fields are averaging 50-70 bushels per acre - a welcome result given the dry year. Quality is excellent with high test weights at 61 to 62.5 pounds per bushel and protein at 13.1 percent. The outstanding variety for the year is the aptly named Polansky Rockstar. She expects to wrap up harvest with three or four more big days.&nbsp;

“I am pleasantly surprised with how this year’s harvest is going,” Leffler said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Only four or five producers are cutting near Delphos in Ottawa County, according to Brett Courson, general manager of the Delphos Coop Association. Results thus far are coming in&nbsp;at 10 to 20&nbsp;bushels per acre with fairly poor test weights, but protein is averaging 15 percent and no dockage.&nbsp;

The wheat is ripe, but the straw is still a little tough. Courson expects producers who applied fungicide won’t start harvesting for another eight to 10 days, but that wheat should be better and could average up closer to 40 bushels per acre.&nbsp;

The variability in the wheat crop reflects the timing of moisture this season. The wheat was stressed until heading out with moisture seven to eight inches short. Then the rain started to fall and helped fill kernels. Unfortunately, the area had a considerable amount of freeze damage, which was sporadic at first, but then yellow and white heads started to spread out across fields.&nbsp;

“There are fields that look pretty good, but you go out in them and there might only be seven to eight kernels in the head, but the next head has 30,” Courson said.&nbsp;

Delphos Coop Association is hoping to bring in around 500,000 bushels, about half of their normal amount. The majority of that wheat is destined for flour mills in the Kansas City area.&nbsp;

The Kansas Wheat team caught up with Tim Turek near South Haven in Sumner County&nbsp;on Tuesday evening&nbsp;before rains halted harvest progress&nbsp;on Wednesday morning. Having started harvest on June 15, Turek reported yields are about half of average, but a field of continuous wheat planted to AP18 AX from AgriPro yielded 50 bushels per acre. Test weights ahead of the rain were heavy at more than 60 pounds per bushel and protein was excellent&nbsp;at 12 to 16&nbsp;percent.&nbsp;

The wheat had a good stand last fall but was still hampered by drought conditions. The crop needed a good rain at heading, but three weeks without appreciable moisture meant the stands lost tillers. Not all hope was lost, however, as rain did fall.

“Then the cool and damp weather came in and allowed a lot of good grain fill for the heads we had,” Turek said. “The grain fill is what has made our yields.”

Now, though, the recent rain is preventing harvest from kicking into full swing. The moisture also means weeds are coming in, and producers are trying to get fields cut before they take over. Turek expects harvest to last another two weeks.&nbsp;

He is a certified seed grower, but what isn’t saved for next fall’s planting will be delivered to Scoular in Wellington. There, preferred varieties will be sent on to Grain Craft flour mill.&nbsp;

Turek’s family has been farming in the area since his great-great-grandfather moved from Nebraska to Oklahoma during the historic land run. His great-grandfather moved into southern Kansas in the 1920s and bought five quarters of ground. That land is still being farmed, along with other acres in the area, by Turek, his daughter Paige, his father and his brother.&nbsp;

“We all work together,” he said. “Jill, my wife, keeps us fed.”

Day 4, Kansas Wheat Harvest Report

RILEY COUNTY —&nbsp;On Thursday, police took three individuals into custody on Pottawatomie County District Court warrants in connection to the suspected fentanyl-related death of an 18-year-old man at a hotel in Manhattan on March 11, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

Noah Baker, 19, of Junction City; McKaine Farr, 21, of Wamego and Shawn Samuelson, 22, of Manhattan were all arrested on requested charges that include distribution of a controlled substance causing death. 

Baker was arrested in Junction City with assistance from the Junction City Police Department. Farr was arrested in rural Wamego with assistance from the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office. Samuelson was already confined in the Riley County Jail on unrelated charges and is being held on detainer for the distribution charge.

During a subsequent search warrant at Farr’s location, additional suspected fentanyl was seized.

Baker and Farr are currently confined at the Pottawatomie County Jail, Farr is being held on no bond and Baker with a $25,000 bond. Samuelson remains confined in the Riley County Jail.

The 11U Junction City Blues Baseball Team wrapped up their season with a record of 32-11. The team placed 1st in PG Topeka All Turf Open, 1st PG Wildcat Classic, 1st PG Lil' Apple Open, and brought home 2nd place in the PG State Tournament.&nbsp; &nbsp;The Junction City Blues Baseball Club will be hosting tryouts on July 22nd for their upcoming 2023-2024 season, for 7U - 12U players.&nbsp; Tryouts will be held at North Park in Junction City, KS. JUNCTION CITY - The Junction City Fire Department has announced the upcoming retirement of JCFD Engineer, Tim Dokken.

Dokken was hired on April 24th, 1994 as a Firefighter/EMT.&nbsp;

Over the course of his 29 year career, he was promoted to the rank of Engineer.

On Friday, June 30th, the public is invited to celebrate Dokken's service to the community and his retirement.

A reception will be held at the City Municipal Gymnasium, 700 N Jefferson Street, from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm.

MANHATTAN —Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged criminal damage to property in Manhattan.

Just after 5p.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 300 block of S. 4th St. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The Fraternal Order of Eagles was listed as the victim when it was reported the glass entry door to their establishment was damaged causing approximately $500 in loss.

RCPD: $500 door damaged at Fraternal Order of Eagles

It’s a busy time for farmers in Kansas, with wheat harvest underway. The Kansas Highway Patrol would like to remind motorists to use more caution and patience when traveling around farm trucks, tractors, combines, and other implements, according to a media release from the agency.

“With wheat harvest season soon beginning, you’ll see heavy farm implement and truck traffic moving in and out of Kansas wheat fields and on to Kansas roadways. It’s important to remember that traveling around these vehicles requires extra caution. By taking your time and giving farm and heavy equipment plenty of room on the roadways, you can help ensure that yourself, your loved ones, and our Kansas farmers all make it home safely,” said Captain Candice Breshears, KHP Public Information Officer.

Most farm equipment is not designed to travel at highway speeds and may only travel 15-25 mph. Farm equipment is often wider than the lane of traffic, so extra room should be allowed when sharing the road. Caution should be practiced on all roads, but especially on busy rural roads with unmarked intersections.

Most farmers regularly check for vehicles behind them, however, most of their time must be spent looking ahead to stay on the road and watch for oncoming traffic. Implements are very loud, hindering their ability to hear your vehicle.

Don’t pass unless you can see clearly ahead of both your vehicle and the equipment you are passing. If there are curves or hills blocking your view, wait until you can clearly visualize the area you are passing in. You should not pass in a designated “No Passing Zone,” even if you are stuck behind a farm vehicle. Do not pass if you are within 100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing, bridge, elevated structure, or tunnel.

Due to the size of some farm equipment, the farmer must execute wide left turns, so allow it plenty of room and time to turn and be alert to see if there might be a driveway or field they may be turning into.

Don’t assume that a farmer can move aside to let you pass. Shoulders may be soft, wet, or steep, which can cause the farm vehicle to tip, or the shoulder may not support the weight of a heavy farm vehicle. They understand you are being delayed and will move over at the first safe location available.

When you see the slow-moving vehicle emblem, immediately slow down. While the emblems are visible from a long distance, it is difficult to judge the speed at which you are closing in on the vehicle, especially at night.

When you are not focused solely on the road, you increase your chances of a collision, especially if you should come upon a slow-moving farm vehicle.

At the June 21st JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s Celebration of Optimism gathering at the Hampto Inn, Susan Moyer, Director and Emily Burtis, Director of Youth Programs at the Dorothy Bramlage PublicLibrary shared information about the Summer Reading Program.

Emily told the group that there are 1,137 people enrolled in the Summer Reading Program. The JC Breakfast Optimist Club donated $200.00 to be used to supply items needed for the program for youth enrolled in USD 475, home schooled children and those at the Detention Center.

Emily shared that “Science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) topics are included in learning opportunities during the week. Connections are made between the STEAM topics centered around real-world situations and books youth are reading this summer. Some of the activities have included robotics, painting rocks, having fun with soap bubbles in Heritage Park and learning to countand make change in an imaginary pizza parlor.

In the fall the activities will change to learning fairy tales from different cultures, “touch a truck” (fire truck) and an American Girl Tea Party.”

Susan Moyer told the group “work continues toward establishing a site for the new library, making grant applications, and seeking public and private donations." She went on to say "other&nbsp; financial resources include a library levy, some state, city and county funds and generous contributions made on the Greater Geary Community Foundation Match Day. Libraries are so much more than providing readers with books and checking them out. Our library is a community center for meaningful learning."

GEARY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 4:30a.m. Wednesday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported 2016 Kenworth semi driven&nbsp; by Raymond N. McNett, 60, Plevna, was eastbound on Interstate 70 at Moritz Road.

The driver took the exit too quickly and the vehicle rolled onto the drivers side. EMS transported McNett to Stomont Vail in Topeka. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Kansas man hospitalized after semi overturns on I-70

This is day 3 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Combines are kicking into gear across a wider swath of central and eastern Kansas. Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is now eight percent complete, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending June 18, 2023.

Winter wheat conditions were rated at 54 percent very poor to poor, 30 percent fair and 16 percent excellent. The conditions echo farmer sentiments about persistent drought conditions tempered by selective, better-than-expected fields as harvest progresses.

Harvest is further along in Sedgwick County at 20 to 25 percent complete as producers spot around for dry wheat to cut for the territory covered by the Famers Coop Elevator Company. Shawn Talkington reported from Cheney that harvest started with below-average yields but above-expected quality with test weights of 62 to 64 pounds per bushel. Test weights have fallen to 58 to 61 pounds per bushel after the last rain. Farmers are now fighting weeds coming up through the canopy, including crabgrass, palmer amaranth and kochia.

“All in all, quality is better than expected,” Talkington said. “Just due to the year that we’ve had, it’s just going to be kind of disappointing as far as yields go.”

In Marion County, Kansas Wheat caught up with Paul Penner, who was harvesting a field of 15-bushel wheat on Tuesday. This is one of his poorer fields this year with others averaging up to the mid-40s.

Normally, he would expect this field to average 55 to 65 bushels per acre. The field received a half to three-quarters of an inch of rain at planting, had a good stand in the fall and looked good all winter. But, then the rain ran out and Penner didn’t receive any more moisture until late spring. Now, weeds can be seen between the thin rows, so Penner said he wanted to get the field cut before the weeds got any taller.

Penner expects harvest to wrap up in one week. Averaging out better fields with poorer ones, he expects overall yields to be about half his normal. AG Radical from AGSECO is proving to be a good variety that is holding up better to the drought and has fusarium resistance. Moisture is coming in at 12.8 percent, and a sample tested at 13.6 percent protein. Test weights are light, and the tested sample had many shriveled kernels.

Localized conditions continue to reflect better harvest results where scattered showers came. While the area has gotten quite a bit of rainfall since May, Marion County is still rated in D3 (extreme) drought with moisture at a deficit of three to five inches for the year.

Variability is also evident in Saline County, where Gareth Pettijohn also started harvesting on Monday and in his second field on Tuesday. Just east of Salina, he expects to cut most of the acres he planted with two fields insured out due to drought.

All of his wheat was planted following soybeans. With the drought, there has been no disease pressure, but bindweed came in with the late rains. Pettijohn based inputs on the results of Haney soil tests, resulting in only one round of fungicide application and putting down 30 pounds of nitrogen versus the normal 100 pounds.

Pettijohn is seeing distinct differences between good ground in the river bottom where the wheat is up to the belly button and rocky hilltops where it may reach the middle of the shin. Some of the poorer fields did not even put berries all the way up the head. His first two fields were making 36 bushels per acre to low-40s with 60-pound test weight and 11.5 percent protein.

Kansas Wheat Harvest: Day Three

The Geary County Historical Society will be debuting a new exhibit this Saturday, June 24th&nbsp;at 1 p.m. The new exhibit, which focuses on local businesses, will feature a 10 foot long mirror that originally belonged to the Volz &amp; Birch Pharmacy inside the Bartell House around 1890. The mirror was installed in the museum over weekend with the help of DM Construction &amp; Remodeling, who are sponsors of the exhibit.

Other features of the exhibit include a grocery store counter out of Peter Pan grocery store, 1950s era prom dresses out of businesses including Claire’s, Hampton’s and The Fashion Shop, and the cash register from LaShelle Shoe Store.

The exhibit opens Saturday, 1-4 p.m. with special soda fountain treats off the Clewell’s Drug Store menu, which will be available for a small donation. All are invited to attend.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss believes that even though the Federal Reserve didn't raise rates this month, that doesn't mean they are done raising rates entirely.

"I think they are going to raise interest rates at the end of July," Goss said. "That's a real concern. Inflation is coming down dramatically. In other words, the Producer Price Index, that's in terms of agricultural prices and so on, coming down very quickly right now. Year over year numbers are negative right now, in terms of producer prices. Of course, in terms of farm land prices, that's continuing to grow despite these lower inflation readings."

The rate fluctuations really concern the bankers that are part of the Creighton University Rural Mainstreet Index.

"They are concerned about what the Federal Reserve is doing right now to them, in terms of what they have to pay for deposits," Goss said. "In other words, on the short end, bankers are having to pay more and more, higher and higher interest rates for their deposits. At the same time, they are not getting those same higher interest rates on their loans that they make to businesses and to farmers."

Goss also is concerned about the overall world economy and how that can impact agriculture, in particular.

"China's economy is slowing down, down, down," Goss said. "Of course, there's the issue with Taiwan. Mexico is the number one export destination for most of the states, except the northern states, Minnesota and North Dakota, it's Canada, but nonetheless, that's a concern of mine going forward."

Though agricultural commodity prices have been strong, weather does have a negative effect on yields, particularly in wheat country this year.

Goss: Many concerns in rural Midwest, despite growth

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) announced that the investigation into around 100 suspicious letters sent to legislators and public officials has now expanded beyond Kansas, so the FBI will now be the agency leading the investigation.

The KBI will continue to work with all law enforcement partners to bring these incidents to appropriate resolution.

“Our focus remains on ensuring the safety of Kansans, and holding those responsible for these crimes accountable, said KBI Director Tony Mattivi. “The KBI is so appreciative of the incredible coordination and outstanding response by countless federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, as well as by fire departments, and hazmat teams to this unprecedented event.”

Since the first letters were handled and reported by officials, the KBI had over 60 special agents, forensic scientists and employees devoted to safely collecting or screening evidence, or managing and tracking response to the incidents. Additionally, 17 hazmat teams and 12 bomb squads responded across the state.

It remains important to be vigilant when handling mail. Report any letters containing an unknown white powder to the KBI at 1-800-KSCRIME or the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or&nbsp;tips.fbi.gov.

"At this point, it appears over 100 elected state and legislative officials have received threatening letters filled with a suspicious powdery substance. Thankfully, the KDHE is saying the substance is presumptively negative for any biologicals. While this is certainly good news, it has nonetheless been a stressful last few days for our families and other citizens impacted by this cowardly attempt to intimidate the legislature. We urge all of our members to please remain vigilant and cautious when opening their mail as this case is still developing.

"We want to thank the leaders and agents of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, local law enforcement and fire departments, the Kansas National Guard, KDHE, the FBI, the Office of the State Fire Marshal and everyone else involved in the massive process of safely retrieving these envelopes. A small sample of the letters containing powder was sent to a laboratory that specializes in testing biological samples. Preliminary tests have returned from this lab indicating the substance is presumptively negative for common biological agents of concern. Further and more complete testing will be conducted on this sample, as well as on additional letters that have been collected, in an effort to determine the components of the substance.

The investigation is ongoing. Nothing further will be released at this time.

Junction City Republican Representative Jeff Underhill confirmed to the Post that he was one of the lawmakers to receive mail, but that he had received communication from legislative leadership about suspicious letters generally before going to his Post Office box.&nbsp;

He said a powder was folded up between the pages of a letter 'wishing him ill', and that in his case it appeared to come from a local address.

Republican Rep. Kenny Titus from Wamego also confirmed receipt of a letter on Friday, though he was unable to comment further on Friday.

McPherson Republican Sen. Rick Wilborn said he contacted the KBI about a piece of mail he received, as well, though he didn't open it after having received correspondence from the Senate President's office and Legislative Administrative Services alerting him to the possibility of suspicious mail.

Wilborn updated Hutch Post Saturday morning, saying that he had heard that 65 Republicans and Attorney General Kris Kobach had received letters as of Friday night.

Law enforcement is working to safely collect the letters and investigate the incidents. Currently, no injuries have been reported, but law enforcement asks everyone to remain vigilant in handling mail. Any similar incidents should be reported to the KBI at 1-800-KSCRIME.

Republican Rep. Paul Waggoner, who serves portions of Reno and McPherson Counties, sent Hutch Post two photos of the letter he received.

He said that the return address on his envelope, 4310 North Monroe, matched the address of the church he attends, Crossroads Christian Church and that it was 'very creepy'.

He compared the powder to flour, but doesn't know what it was.

Leadership told Waggoner to call the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, which he did about 5 p.m. Friday.

Waggoner believes the mail may have come from transgender activists, saying, "They were the most negative and hateful mail we received all session."

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged theft in Manhattan.

Just after 4p.m.Sunday, officers filed a report for theft of lost property in the 500 block of Tuttle Creek Blvd. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;A 36-year-old woman reported she lost her diamond ring in the parking lot of Longhorn Steakhouse. A separate party reported they saw an unknown woman pick it up before walking into the restaurant. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $3,000. Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. Using the Crime Stoppers service allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

RCPD: Woman's lost diamond ring stolen

Wheat harvest has been marching on for nearly two weeks in Cowley County, with numerous interruptions from rain, reported Kevin Kelly, general manager of Two Rivers Coop in Arkansas City. Harvest started in the area around June 7 and quality appears to be good with proteins in the 14 percent range.&nbsp;

Just three counties to the west in Barber County, farmers are sending in quite a few samples, but moisture remains&nbsp;at 15 to 16percent, according to Sarah Dodge, grain merchandiser with Farmers Coop Equity Co., in Isabel and Medicine Lodge. Producers are hoping this week’s hot and windy weather will mean harvest will be in full swing soon.&nbsp;

While the Medicine Lodge area did receive close to an inch from every storm system that has come through in the last few weeks, the rain is too little, too late to help the wheat crop in the area. Farmers are now seeing weeds that have popped up in the fields. Spotty hail damage added insult to injury for some.

“A little damage goes a long way in this poor crop,” Dodge said.&nbsp;

Dodge reported the 10-year-average for the co-op’s intake is a little over three million bushels. Last year wasn’t even half and this year if the co-op sees one million bushels, it would be a welcome surprise. Still, some producers are hopeful for some decent fields left standing, with the best expected to average 35 to 50 bushels per acre. Most of that wheat is likely headed up to flour mills near Kansas City, but Dodge is holding out for quality data before contracting.&nbsp;

Spotty, scattered rains late in the season is also the drumbeat across Wilson County in southeast Kansas. Nicole Small, who farms near Neodesha, said the first measurable rain came in May, when parts of the area got up to 5.8 inches of rain, while farms just eight miles away are still rated in D4 (exceptional) drought.&nbsp;

Small and her family expect to cut 800 of the 1,000 acres they planted to wheat this year, noting that the wheat was planted into milo stalks and partially grazed due to a shortage of forage. Those who have received moisture are battling seeps in the field with standing water and green sucker heads that make harvest a slog.&nbsp;

They have cut 200 acres so far with results all over the board. Yields for their fields are around 45 bushels per acre with acceptable test weights, while some neighbors are reporting upwards of 60 bushels per acre and others much lower.&nbsp;

Variability will continue to be a theme for the 2023 Kansas wheat crop as harvest continues to expand out from the southern central and southeastern portions of the state.&nbsp;

Just after 5p.m. June 16, officers filed a report for theft in the 800 block of Commons Place in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

JUNCTION CITY –&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly celebrates the announcement that Michelin will invest more than $100 million into its Junction City operations over the next five years, creating 200 new jobs, according to a media release from her office.

The investment will increase the company’s production capacity of Camso rubber tracks for agricultural equipment.

“Michelin’s expansion is further proof that the work we are doing to recruit, retain, and expand business in the state is paying off,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “Now, 200 more Kansans will have quality jobs and Junction City will continue to grow, benefiting the state as a whole.”

Camso, a brand under the Michelin Group, specializes in off-road tires, rubber tracks, and systems for material handling, construction, agriculture, and power sports industries.

In Junction City, the estimated 200 new positions will increase that plant’s workforce to 375 by 2026.

Jobs: Michelin to invest more than $100 million into Junction City operation

MANHATTAN — Despite a serious last-minute challenge, the Kansas State University&nbsp;<a href="https://bae.k-state.edu/student-organizations/tractor-team/index.html" target="_blank">Helwig Farms Quarter-Scale Tractor Team</a>&nbsp;took second place out of 22 teams from other universities at the 26th annual American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers' International Quarter-Scale Tractor Student Design Competition in Peoria, Illinois, according to a media release from KSU. K-State's team has finished among the top two in this competition 18 times out of the 26 years the event has been held, but this year's success didn't come easy. Each team must perform multiple tasks for the competition, including a written design report, a formal design presentation and a series of performance events — a durability course, a maneuverability course and three tractor pulls. The K-State team completed the report and presentation according to plan, but the night before the first performance event, the main power shaft in the tractor's transmission snapped in two, requiring instant repairs in order to be used in the competition. "The team was clearly frustrated but quickly rose to the occasion and began formulating a plan to solve the problem," said Ed Brokesh, advisor for the team and assistant professor in the Carl and Melinda Helwig Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering. The team made plans to temporarily repair the shaft for the events the following day, sacrificing the use of second gear in the process, while a new shaft was fabricated and installed in time for the final portion of the competition, the pulling events. Despite this obstacle, K-State's tractor finished second in the durability competition. During that competition, others on the team were dispatched to Chicago to purchase materials for the new shaft, which was built and installed in the hobby machine shop of a K-State alumnus. The new transmission was installed just in time for the final portion of the competition, the pulling event, and performed admirably with a fourth-place finish.  </figure>MANHATTAN — Despite a serious last-minute challenge, the Kansas State University&nbsp;<a href="https://bae.k-state.edu/student-organizations/tractor-team/index.html" target="_blank">Helwig Farms Quarter-Scale Tractor Team</a>&nbsp;took second place out of 22 teams from other universities at the 26th annual American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers' International Quarter-Scale Tractor Student Design Competition in Peoria, Illinois, according to a media release from KSU. K-State's team has finished among the top two in this competition 18 times out of the 26 years the event has been held, but this year's success didn't come easy. Each team must perform multiple tasks for the competition, including a written design report, a formal design presentation and a series of performance events — a durability course, a maneuverability course and three tractor pulls. The K-State team completed the report and presentation according to plan, but the night before the first performance event, the main power shaft in the tractor's transmission snapped in two, requiring instant repairs in order to be used in the competition. "The team was clearly frustrated but quickly rose to the occasion and began formulating a plan to solve the problem," said Ed Brokesh, advisor for the team and assistant professor in the Carl and Melinda Helwig Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering. The team made plans to temporarily repair the shaft for the events the following day, sacrificing the use of second gear in the process, while a new shaft was fabricated and installed in time for the final portion of the competition, the pulling events. Despite this obstacle, K-State's tractor finished second in the durability competition. During that competition, others on the team were dispatched to Chicago to purchase materials for the new shaft, which was built and installed in the hobby machine shop of a K-State alumnus. The new transmission was installed just in time for the final portion of the competition, the pulling event, and performed admirably with a fourth-place finish.
