JUNCTION CITY, Kan.- Geary County Schools USD 475 has earned recognition from the Kansas State Department of Education for the 2022-23 school year in the following areas: Kindergarten Readiness, Social Emotional Growth, Individual Plans of Study and Civic Engagement.

Kindergarten Readiness remained steady at a Bronze star, while Social Emotional Growth improved from a Copper to a Bronze. USD 475 had not previously received recognition in the area of Individual Plans of Study and has now received a Copper Star.

In addition to the four schools recognized last year (Junction City Middle School, Fort Riley Middle School, Milford Elementary and Ware Elementary), KSDE has announced that four more Geary County Schools (Lincoln Elementary, Spring Valley Elementary, Junction City High School and Fort Riley Elementary) have earned the Civic Advocacy Network Award for their commitment to civic engagement for students.&nbsp; KSDE will be recognizing them during state webinars and sending a banner to display in their schools. 

The district now has eight schools recognized in this area at the state level. All of these marks will be included on the updated School Accountability Report which will be released in January.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Kansas State University agricultural economics and veterinary medicine staff are taking their knowledge on animal record-keeping to mobile phones with an app that is now available in app stores for IPhone and Android devices.

K-State livestock economist Ted Schroeder said the app, called CalfDex, is free to download. It was developed by agricultural economist master’s graduate Jake Hefley (who now works at the University of Missouri), master’s candidate Audrey Marchek, K-State veterinarian Bob Larson and Schroeder.

The project was funded by a grant from the USDA Federal-State Marketing Improvement Program.

“Our team is eager to provide users with a convenient and easy-to-use modern animal data management tool to keep pace in an ever-changing industry,” Schroeder said. “Considering the growing importance of information exchange in the beef supply chain, there is value in an application that has the ability to store and upload data at the whole-herd and individual animal levels, while also facilitating easy downstream data sharing.”

The app is designed for use in the field even where cell phone service is not available. Schroeder said CalfDex enables producers to maintain efficient and accurate calving, weaning and treatment records – mitigating the risk of clutter, data loss and misplacement that is commonly seen with paper records. The data is also stored across calving seasons for easy access.

Schroeder said the app allows users to protect information with a unique email address and password, established by the user.

“Because it has the capability to track multiple herds and individual animal information, CalfDex is tailored to meet the needs of all sizes of calving operations, from large purebred enterprises to a 4-H or FFA student beginning their first beef breeding project,” Schroeder said.

Just after 3p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for theft in the 500 block of McCall Road in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 An employee of Menards reported an unknown suspect entered the business and stole a Generac generator and a Champion generator. &nbsp;

The total loss was estimated to be $2,100.

Find Farm Fun for Kansas Kids in Agriland

For more than 30 years, Kansas agricultural organizations have shared interactive, hands-on activities with the younger state fair attendees in Agriland in the Pride of Kansas building. The educational exhibit will be open for the length of the state fair. Wheat Scoop: Can you scout the wheat at the Kansas State Fair?

The 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley will host a 9/11 commemoration ceremony Monday at 10 a.m. at the Global War on Terrorism monument, which is located on the east side of Cavalry Parade Field.

The monument is a small replica of the World Trade Center Twin Towers on a Pentagon-shaped base. It bears the names of Fort Riley Soldiers who have given their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Col. Michael Foote, Fort Riley Garrison Commander, will speak at the event, which includes a wreath laying, a three-round salute fired by an honor guard and “Taps.” First responders from Junction City and Manhattan will join Fort Riley Directorate of Emergency Services professionals in the commemoration.

Visitors to Fort Riley who don’t have a Department of Defense ID card can stop by the Visitor Control Center near the Henry Gate (Exit 301 off I-70) to get a pass. Visitors can also apply for a pass online at https://home.army.mil/riley.

<a></a><a></a><a></a><a>On Saturday, September 9, the Kansas Department of Transportation plans to temporarily close two eastbound I-70 entrance ramps at Junction City in Geary County.</a>

From 7 to 11 a.m. the eastbound entrance ramps at J Hill Road/Grandview Plaza (exit 299) and K-57 (exit 300) will be closed to help ease traffic congestion due to anticipated K-State football traffic.

For K-State fans traveling to the game, the Kansas Department of Transportation suggests using an alternate route such as U.S. 77 to the north.

As I-70 construction progresses along this 5-mile stretch through Junction City, motorists should anticipate traffic changes the week of September 11 as median crossovers will carry one lane of westbound traffic through construction via the eastbound lanes.

Construction is part of a multi-phase $30 million project including construction of temporary crossovers, pavement replacement, replacement of drainage structures, rehabbing bridges, and resurfacing of some local routes which is scheduled to be completed by December 2025, weather permitting.

RILEY COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 5:30a.m. Thursday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Ford Explorer driven by Brandon Lane&nbsp;Hanschu, 42, Manhattan, was westbound on Kansas 18 just east of Scenic Drive.

The driver lost control of the SUV when he struck the remains of a dead deer and struck two pedestrians identified as 20-year-old Jhon Paulo&nbsp;Reid and 24-year-old Jarde Lachelle Hill both of Manhattan.

Reid was checking his vehicle on the left inside shoulder from a non injury accident that had occurred just prior.&nbsp; Hill was checking her vehicle on the left inside shoulder from a car vs deer non injury accident that had also occurred just prior. 

EMS transported Reid and Hill to Via Christi in Manhattan where Reid was pronounced deceased.&nbsp;Hanschu was properly restrained and not injured, according to the KHP.

RILEY COUNTY —The Kansas Highway Patrol is on scene at a single vehicle vs pedestrian crash on K18 westbound in Riley County, east of the Scenic Drive exit off K-18(Fort Riley Boulevard)

Westbound traffic is completely shut down and diverted onto Northbound Scenic Drive back to Anderson Ave. 

KDOT has been notified for traffic control.

The Junction City Police Department presents the Law Enforcement Block Party. The event is on Saturday, September 16, at Heritage Park from 5-8 p.m.&nbsp;

The Junction City Fire Department evacuated houses in the area and barricaded roads near the leak.&nbsp;

Just after 10:30a.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 300 block of Sunset Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The Pottroff and Karlin Legal Firm reported an unknown suspect damaged a limestone sign valued at $6,000. &nbsp;

Johnson’s office administers the state’s unclaimed property program, which currently holds more than $500 million waiting to be claimed. One in 10 people is estimated to have unclaimed property, which could include unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts, and safe deposit boxes. Kansans can search the online database any time at&nbsp;<a href="https://kansascash.ks.gov/" target="_blank">https://KansasCash.ks.gov</a>.

The State Fair also coincides with September’s recognition as College Savings Month. Johnson’s office will have information at the booth on the savings programs administered by his office, including the Learning Quest 529 plan, KIDS matching grant program, ABLE savings plan, Kansas ScholarShop, and First-Time Home Buyer Savings Accounts. The annual Patriot Day Career Fair will be next Tuesday ( Dept. 12th ) from 2-7 p.m. at the Junction City Municipal Building. Employers can register at JCACC.ORG.

The Geary County Schools USD 475 Board of Education approved the recommendation from administration to purchase cameras for approximately $87,774 for Seitz Elementary and Fort Riley Elementary, who are the schools that are in the most need of camera upgrades.

USD 475 was awarded a 50/50 match for safety and security initiatives throughout the district in the amount of $110,000.

Converge One had the lowest cost from various vendors that submitted pricing. The safety and security grant from KSDE provides funding in conjunction with the operations master plan.

Kelley Hunt will perform at the C.L. Hoover Opera House in Junction City on Friday, September 8th, at 7:00 P.M.

Kelley's career includes 6 acclaimed indie releases, two single, and her first holiday album "Winter Solstice" which landed Nov. 2022 to wide critical acclaim: "If you're tired of the same old stale,  over-roasted chestnuts for Christmas, Kelley Hunt brings some fresh fare to the holiday table, offering up a big band, gospel/soul platter with 'Winter Soulstice'."

Prior to the show, there will be a free vocal workshop with Hunt, on Friday morning, at the Opera House Theater. 

&nbsp;The workshop will be at 10 A.M. in the theater and is for ages 14 and up.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a teen for alleged criminal damage to property.

Just after 3p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 1500 block of Oxford Place in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Park Place Apartments reported a 13-year-old boy spray painted multiple walls in an apartment complex causing approximately $500 worth of damage. 

The 13-year-old male was arrested on requested charges of criminal damage to property, processed through juvenile intake and released to a guardian.

"Our intern colleague, Ryan 'High Speed' Haner, was a key partner who applied new information and new skills to practical use daily. His involvement and insight provided efficiency and effectivity to our operations," said Pete Cordera, supervising airport operations manager for GA-Aeornautical Systems, 99CL El Mirage Field, Hangar 80, Desert Horizon. "We are pleased that Ryan chose GA-ASI, and we hope that he learned from us as much as we learned from him."&nbsp; K-State Salina's industry partnerships run deep with other world-renowned companies as well. The following are a few of the professional experiences that K-State Salina students had this past summer:Seth Bauerle, senior in aviation management,&nbsp;Hiawatha,&nbsp;spent his summer at Textron Aviation Defense as a defense aftermarket logistics analyst. In his nearly three months with the company, Bauerle's responsibilities included creating a change in the aftermarket rework process and presenting his findings to Textron employees in senior leadership. He also helped individuals with projects in the data systems the company utilizes.&nbsp; Ryan Haner, junior in aviation maintenance management,&nbsp;Pomona,&nbsp;recently completed a summer internship with General Atomics. Haner received supervised practical training to help him pursue a career as an aircraft mechanic, technician or maintenance manager. His duties also included assisting in completing routine and non-routine tasks, analysis, investigation and solving problems in the maintenance, servicing, repairing and overhauling of aircraft.Joya Shelton, junior in web development technology and digital media technology,&nbsp;Kansas City, Missouri, interned as a marketing communications and analytics intern for PBI-Gordon.&nbsp; Shelton did social media management and website research to help the company build on its social media and online presence. Her internship concluded with a presentation to management on how they could utilize TikTok to build their brand and sell more products.&nbsp;It is K-State Salina's mission to ensure all students are career ready and prepared to successfully navigate their professional lives. The campus does this by integrating career development into the academic curriculum and by providing a wide range of quality and inclusive career services that promote growth and professional development.

The 2024 Junction City spending plan has been given city commission approval. The property tax levy will total 48.311 mills.

In other business the governing body approved the use of the 12th Street Community Center with a waiver of fees for the Packages for Warriors organization.

Commissioners were in session Tuesday night.

Members of the Junction City Commission have said yes to formation of a city Metropolitan Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals.

Applications will be accepted by the second meeting in October.

The county recently formed their own MPC. In the past one board served both the city and county.
