MANHATTAN, Kansas – Josie Strauss of the Chapman FFA chapter won first place in the Agricultural Education Proficiency at the 97th Kansas FFA Convention, May 28–30, 2025, on the Kansas State University campus.

Strauss will receive the option to compete at the National FFA Convention against other competitors from across the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The National FFA Convention will be held from Oct. 29 through Nov. 1, 2025, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Agricultural Education Proficiency is designed to relate to education and extension, including, but not limited to, youth mentoring, agricultural education departmental assistants, PALS mentors and student coordinators, developing and conducting informational materials and presentations for civic organizations and school-aged youth, and students who are involved in SAEs surrounding educating the public about the broad topics of agriculture, agriculture education and FFA.

Runners-up in no particular order: Nora Bosse, Wamego FFA chapter; Maggie Chandler, Neodesha FFA chapter.

Junction City Middle School receives a Be the Spark grant

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ford is recalling more than a million vehicles due to a software issue that can cause the rearview camera to malfunction, increasing the chance of an accident, government auto regulators said.

The software error, which Ford reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration earlier this month, may cause the rearview camera image to delay, freeze or not display when the vehicle is in reverse.

The problem will be fixed by a dealer or via an "over-the-air" update at a later date. A preliminary letter notifying owners of the safety risk is expected to be mailed June 16, with a second letter to be sent once the update is available, expected sometime in the third quarter of 2025.

The following Ford vehicles — a total of 1,075,299 — are included in the recall:

2023-2024 F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, F-600

Owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for the recall is 25S49.

 The Department of Government Efficiency has canceled four National Science Foundation grants worth more than $4.3 million that were awarded to the University of Kansas and Kansas State University, citing the programs as “wasteful DEI grants.”

The Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, announced the cancellations through its “savings” website, which listed terminations of three KU grants on April 25 and May 2, and one grant to K-State on May 2.

The decision is part of a larger effort by DOGE and the NSF to review and terminate what they describe as non-priority grants. In an April 18 post on X, formerly Twitter, the NSF said it was ending awards “not aligned with agency priorities” and reaffirmed its commitment to “creating opportunities for all Americans everywhere, without exclusion of any groups.”

DOGE claims the cancellations will save the federal government nearly $1.5 million, despite the total value of the grants exceeding $4.3 million. The move is part of a broader sweep that has resulted in the termination of hundreds of NSF-funded projects, many of them tied to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

Two of the canceled grants — one each to KU and K-State — were part of the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation program. The LSAMP initiative aims to diversify the STEM workforce by increasing the number of underrepresented students earning degrees in science, technology, engineering and math.

The KU LSAMP grant supported a partnership with Pittsburg State University, the University of Nebraska, Southeast Community College, Johnson County Community College and Kansas City Kansas Community College. K-State’s grant, similarly aimed at building STEM pathways in Kansas, listed partners including Wichita State University and multiple community colleges across the state.

Another KU grant, awarded under the joint NSF-NIH SCISIPBIO initiative, focused on examining the career barriers faced by Black biomedical scientists. The study planned to build a dataset of more than 2 million individual faculty members to evaluate disparities in academic success metrics such as publications, citations and grant funding.

A separate KU grant targeted barriers faced by underserved, post-traditional engineering students — including those who are older, attend college part-time or support families. The research aimed to inform engineering programs about policy changes that could improve retention among such students, particularly those from economically disadvantaged and minority backgrounds.

The cancellation of these grants has raised concern among education advocates and researchers who argue that programs designed to support underrepresented communities in STEM are critical for long-term workforce development and innovation.

The cuts follow the recent resignation of the NSF director, raising further questions about the future direction of federal science funding and the role of diversity initiatives in higher education.

DOGE cuts grants to KU, KSU claims $1.5M savings

The Geary County Food Pantry will open its new location on Thursday, May 29. The address for the new location is 700A W. 7th St. in Junction City.

Julia Loper, the President of the Board for the Geary County Food Pantry, noted that their project at the new location is not yet finished, but they will be opening their doors on Thursday. “There is still work being done to our facility, but we are open to serve our neighbors at our new location,” Loper said. Work on the project will continue to occur as the Food Pantry serves the community.

Hours at the new facility remain the same as they were at the previous location. Their hours are listed below.

Mondays and Thursdays – 10:30 a.m. - Noon

A formal grand opening and ribbon-cutting will be held during the late summer or early fall months. Hutton Construction was the main contractor for the project.

The Chamber hosted an Armed Forces Day event in May and Victory Week at Fort Riley will be June 23-27.

The Sheriff's Department worked 523 incidents combined, made 30 arrests, conducted two DUI investigaions, one drug investigation, handled three assault and battery cases and there were 214 total traffic stops. There were an average of 87 inmates in the Geary County Detention Center.

The Wear Orange Walk honors victims and survivors of senseless acts of violence (gun violence, domestic violence, drugs, bullying, suicide, and harassment). Wearing the color orange symbolizes the value of each person’s life.

The walk is Sunday, June 8, at 4:00 p.m. The meeting spot is in front of the Junction City Municipal Building at 700 N. Jefferson St.

All are invited and welcome to attend. After the walk, a complimentary snack will be provided (until gone).

History and significance of June 2nd and the walk

Wear Orange originated on June 2, 2015 – what would have been Hadiya Pendleton’s 18th birthday. Just one week after performing at President Obama’s second inaugural parade in 2013, her life was taken at the age of 15. In the aftermath, teenagers in Chicago wanted to honor their friend and wore orange to raise awareness around gun violence. Today, Wear Orange honors Hadiya and the 125 people shot and killed every day in the United States, as well as the hundreds more who are wounded.

The Trump Administration recently appointed David Schemm as the new State Executive Director (SED) for the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Kansas. Schemm joined the Kansas FSA team on May 5, 2025.

This new group of USDA appointees will ensure President Trump’s America First agenda is a reality in rural areas across the country. David Schemm appointed as USDA FSA Director in Kansas

WABAUNSEE COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating two teen suspect in connection with an alleged burglary.

On Monday night, a Sergeant with the Wabaunsee County Sheriff's Office investigated a suspicious gray 2018 Hyundia Tucson in Eskridge, according to a media release.

The vehicle had reportedly circled a structure on the 200 block of South Cedar without headlights on before parking. Two individuals dressed in black exited the vehicle and entered an abandoned property with bags and later loaded items from the building into the vehicle.

The Sheriff's Sergeant initiated a traffic stop as the vehicle attempted to depart the area and made contact with the driver, identified as 18-year-old Zane Arthur Burnett, and the passenger, identified as 19-year-old Eli Joseph Hoskins, both from Johnson County Kansas.

 A probable cause search of the vehicle revealed stolen items from the building including Masonic books, antique photos, and other objects in wet, dirt-covered bags. 

Both suspects were taken into custody without incident and transported to Wabaunsee County Jail and are being held on requested charges of burglary.

Teens accused of rural Kansas burglary

 Across the country, 13,135 people have been killed in a crash involving a teen driver from 2019-2023. More than 30% of those deaths occurred during the ‘100 Deadliest Days’ between Memorial Day and&nbsp;Labor Day, according to a AAA review of crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). On average, 8 people are killed per day in teen-involved driving crashes in the summer, compared to 7 per day during the rest of the year.&nbsp;

In 2023 alone, the most recent year of complete crash data, 2,897 people nationwide were killed in crashes involving a teen driver. A third of those deaths, 860, happened during the 100 Deadliest Days.&nbsp;

AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety analysis of NHTSA Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data of deadly crashes involving drivers ages 15-18 in Kansas shows the tragic impact in the summer months:&nbsp;

“Summer months are particularly dangerous as more young drivers hit the road during school breaks with many logging more unsupervised driving time than usual,” said Jake Nelson, Director of Traffic Safety Advocacy and Research at AAA. “We encourage families to take advantage of AAA resources like our driver education classes and parent-teen safe driving agreements to help set clear expectations for driving privileges.”&nbsp;

There are steps teens and parents can take to save lives. Parents should model safe driving behavior and talk with their teens about buckling up, obeying speed limits, and putting phones away. 100 Deadliest Days for teen drivers

OGDEN, KS – The Flint Hills Regional Council (FHRC) has been awarded a $1 million Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) Grant by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This federal investment will help communities across the region clean up and redevelop contaminated or underutilized properties, unlocking new economic and community development opportunities.

“This $1,000,000 EPA grant is a game changer for the Flint Hills region,” said Trish Giordano, President of the Flint Hills Regional Council. “It empowers us to transform abandoned properties into thriving community assets, sparking revitalization and creating new jobs. Together, we’re paving the way for a brighter, more prosperous future.”

The EPA’s Brownfields Program, established in 1995, supports local governments and nonprofits in cleaning and redeveloping sites affected by environmental contamination. Through this RLF clean up grant, FHRC will provide low-interest loans to eligible entities in the Flint Hills region, particularly in rural communities where financing for environmental remediation is often difficult to obtain.

According to Janna Williams, Regional Planner for FHRC, the loan fund will move projects forward by funding cleanup of brownfield sites—especially those found in rural downtowns. Once remediated, these sites can be redeveloped into businesses, housing, or public-use spaces, revitalizing communities, creating jobs, and strengthening the tax base.

It is anticipated that funding will become available early fall.&nbsp;

Junction City Area Chamber of Commece CEO Mickey Fornaro-Dean reported to the Geary County Commision Tuesday that as of now this round of DCIP has not been formally funded. Federal officials have not yet released the notice of funding opporunity. A total of $90 million is allotted for all forts combined across the nation.

 Fornaro-Dean noted that Junction City is in good shape competing for the grant and no one else in this state is going after the funding. She also observed that there is some concern locally that the money may not be released at the federal level. There is nothing definite however, on that latter point.

The Defense Community Infrastructure Program is a competitive grant program. It is intended to address deficiencies in community infrastructure that can support a military installation’s readiness.

Members of Congress from Kansas have expressed support for the project.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating an alleged violent incident at the Riley County Jail.

Just before 5:30a.m. Saturday, an officer filed a report for battery of a corrections officer, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 A 31-year-old prisoner identified as Evans Agyemang of Manhattan was listed as a suspect for battering a 25-year-old woman during the performance of her duties. 

Just before 6:30a.m. Agyemang was arrested&nbsp; at 1001 S. Seth Child, for battery of a corrections officer. Agyemang was issued a total bond of $15,000 and remains in custody at Riley County Jail.

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly announced more than $2.3 million in grants aimed at strengthening services and support for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, rape, and stalking across Kansas.

“Survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault must have access to the resources they need to heal and seek justice,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“Investments like these are crucial to building a safer Kansas and supporting those recovering from crime.”

The funding is provided through the federal Services, Training, Officers, and Prosecutors (S.T.O.P.) Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Formula Grant Program, which supports community-based efforts to prevent and respond to crimes against women. The program funds initiatives that develop, train, and expand units of law enforcement officers, prosecutors, judges, and court personnel dedicated to addressing these crimes. It also enhances victim services and legal assistance programs while promoting a coordinated community response to domestic violence, intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

Additional funding is provided through the federal Sexual Assault Services Program (SASP). These grants assist local programs in delivering critical services to survivors of sexual assault, including crisis intervention, medical and criminal justice accompaniment, advocacy, and the dissemination of educational information to support recovery.

The grant funds are made available through the U.S. Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women.

Despite the rainfall, Fort Riley held their Memorial Day ceremony at the Post’s cemetery at 193 Huebner Rd. Fort Riley Garrison Commander Col. Jerry Nunziato delivered remarks. The First Infantry Division Band played the National Anthem, America the Beautiful, and Amazing Grace as part of the ceremony. There was also a 21-gun salute.

The Geary County Veterans Alliance held its Memorial Day ceremony at the C.L. Hoover Opera House in Junction City, and Manhattan’s ceremony was moved indoors to the American Legion Post 17 due to inclement weather.

Local Communities honor Fallen Soldiers and Service Members on Memorial Day

GEARY COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 2a.m. Sunday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Ford Fusion driven by Richard B. Roberts, 20, Sebring, Florida, was northbound on U.S. 77 at Old Milford Road at a high rate of speed. The car entered into the east ditch, struck a tree and caught fire.

Roberts was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Johnson Funeral Home. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.
