TOPEKA&nbsp;— Governor Laura Kelly has signed a proclamation approving updated drought declarations for Kansas counties, according to a statement from her office.

“Drought conditions have persisted across Kansas through the winter and spring, and we must respond accordingly,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “As we head into the summer months, where we typically see drier conditions, I urge Kansans to consider their water usage and take extra care to prevent wildfires.”

The drought declaration placed three counties into emergency status, 39 counties into warning status, and 63 counties into watch status. This action was recommended by Connie Owen, Director of the Kansas Water Office and Chair of the Governor’s Drought Response Team. Precipitation totals have varied widely across Kansas in recent weeks, with some eastern and southeastern counties receiving heavy rainfall that temporarily improved surface moisture, while central and western regions continue to experience worsening drought conditions. Despite these isolated rains, much of the state remains below average for cumulative precipitation, with ongoing deficits in soil moisture and declining streamflows.

“While we’ve seen precipitation in various regions of the state this spring, the long-term effects of drought have prevented improvements in the overall conditions,”&nbsp;said Connie Owen,&nbsp;Director of the Kansas Water Office and Chair of the Governor’s Drought Response Team.&nbsp;“The Governor’s Drought Response Team will continue to monitor the drought conditions across Kansas and make recommendations to Governor Kelly as conditions change.”

Through an interagency agreement between the Kansas Water Office, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, and the Kansas Division of Emergency Management, counties in the emergency stage are eligible for emergency water use from certain state fishing lakes and some federal reservoirs.

Individuals and communities must contact the Kansas Water Office for a water supply request before withdrawing water from lakes. These requests will, in turn, be referred to the appropriate office to obtain the necessary permits to withdraw the requested water.

This proclamation shall remain in effect for those counties identified until rescinded by a proclamation ending the declaration or revising the drought stage status of the affected counties.

The Governor’s Drought Response Team will continue to watch the situation closely and work to minimize the negative drought-induced effects on Kansans. Kansans are encouraged to report drought-related conditions and impacts in their region through the&nbsp;<a href="https://droughtimpacts.unl.edu/Tools/ConditionMonitoringObservations.aspx">Condition Monitoring Observer Reports</a>&nbsp;(CMOR) system.

WABAUNSEE COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 11a.m. Tuesday in Wabaunsee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Kimberly G.&nbsp;Terhune, 64, Maple Hill, was westbound on Interstate 70 just east of Keene Eskridge Road. The SUV traveled into the median, continued&nbsp;&nbsp;into the passing lane of eastbound Interstate 70 and collided with a 2019 Ram 1500 driven by Mark E. Robb,&nbsp; 73, Manhattan.

Terhune was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the Shawnee County Coroner's Office. EMS transported Robb and a passenger Judith A. Robb, 75, Manhattan, to Stormont Vail.&nbsp; Terhune was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The annual cross country motorycle ride called Run for the Wall will make a stop in Junction City late Sunday afternoon. Riders are expected to leave I-70 and roll up North Washington Sreet to Heritage Park where there will be a ceremony to welcome the riders who are traveling from Ontario, CA to Washington DC to a final stop at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

This event that draws riders from across the country has been in existencce for 34 years. It was originally started to raise awareness about POW's, KIA's and MIA's. In Junction City the ride coordinator, David Eckel, noted that about 300 to 400 riders will travel up Washington Street through an avenue of 300 flags held by volunteers.

State Representative Nate Butler will serve as the keynote speaker during a ceremony in front of the Kansas Vietnam Veterans Memorial. That will be followed by a wreath laying ceremony.

Riders will then travel to the Eagles for dinner and then spend the night in Junction City. Early the next morning they will be fed breakfast before departing eastward on their trip.

DICKINSON COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating two suspect for alleged burglary in Abilene.

On May 11, police located two suspects at a residence in Abilene and conducted a search warrant at the home located on&nbsp;300&nbsp;N. Cedar Street, according to a media release.

During the search, police located and recovered several items that were believed to have been stolen from DNR Enterprises,&nbsp;101 S. Cedar Street&nbsp;in Abilene. At the conclusion of the investigation, police arrested 26-year-old Dakota Hogan and 46-year-old Mark Bartley.&nbsp;

They are jailed on requested charges of burglary, theft and criminal damage to property.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins announced the suspension of live cattle, horse, and bison imports through U.S. ports of entry along the southern border due to the continued and rapid northward spread of New World Screwworm (NWS) in Mexico, effective immediately. NWS has been recently detected in remote farms with minimal cattle movement as far north as Oaxaca and Veracruz, about 700 miles away from the U.S. border.

The United States and Mexico continue efforts to interdict and eradicate NWS in Mexico and work in good faith. However, despite these efforts and the economic impact on both countries due to this action, there has been unacceptable northward advancement of NWS and additional action must be taken to slow the northern progression of this deadly parasitic fly. As such, effective immediately, the USDA Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) in conjunction with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will restrict the importation of live animal commodities originating from, or transiting Mexico. This import suspension will persist on a month-by-month basis, until a significant window of containment is achieved. USDA will continue constant collaboration with Mexico, including a review of latest data and metrics in two weeks. Our teams have been in daily communication discussing how we can build on the good work that has been accomplished to improve our strategy toward eradication. Any livestock currently in holding for entry into the United States will be processed normally, this includes an APHIS port Veterinary Medical Officer inspection exam and treatment to ensure they are not carrying NWS.

“The United States has ordered the suspension of livestock imports through ports of entry along our southern border after the continued spread of the New World Screwworm in Mexico. Secretary Berdegué and I have worked closely on the NWS response; however, it is my duty to take all steps within my control to protect the livestock industry in the United States from this devastating pest,” said Secretary Rollins. “The protection of our animals and safety of our nation’s food supply is a national security issue of the utmost importance. Once we see increased surveillance and eradication efforts, and the positive results of those actions, we remain committed to opening the border for livestock trade. This is not about politics or punishment of Mexico, rather it is about food and animal safety.”

Effective eradication, which remains our shared goal and best interest of both the U.S. and Mexico, requires a three-pronged approach: robust active field surveillance with education and outreach to ensure prevention, treatment, and early detection; controlled animal movement to limit spread; and sustained sterile insect dispersal. Suspending livestock transport through southern ports of entry will assist in the effort to limit northbound transport of NWS through livestock commerce, and will allow the U.S. to reassess whether current mitigation standards remain sufficient. It is important to note the northward spread of NWS is possible through natural wildlife movements, including wildlife that transit the border region without impediment.

USDA is taking all possible actions to monitor for, and limit, the northward movement of NWS, including the utilization of the USDA Tick Riders to monitor livestock and wildlife along the southern border region, between the ports of entry, for the presence of NWS.

The U.S. previously and successfully led the eradication of NWS in the U.S. and Mexico, however this cost billions of dollars and took decades. Unfortunately, these recent detections in Mexico show that this dangerous pest is back and remains a serious threat to the health of our animals, our food supply, and the security of our country.

The first case of NWS in Mexico was reported to the U.S. in November 2024. When NWS fly larvae (maggots) burrow into the flesh of a living animal, they cause serious, often deadly damage to the animal. NWS can infest livestock, pets, wildlife, occasionally birds, and in rare cases, people.

In November 2024, after a positive detection of NWS in southern Mexico, USDA shut down the border for live animal trade.

In February 2025, USDA resumed imports after APHIS and Mexico agreed to and implemented a comprehensive pre-clearance inspection and treatment protocol to ensure safe movement and steps to mitigate the threat of NWS.

Over the last two years, screwworm has spread north throughout Panama and into Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Belize, and now Mexico.

APHIS is releasing sterile flies through aerial and ground release at strategic locations, focusing on Southern Mexico and other areas throughout Central America. A complete list of regions APHIS recognizes as affected by NWS as well as more detailed information on trade restrictions can be found on the USDA APHIS Animal Health Status of Regions website.

Monday at 3:17 p.m. Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to I-70 at mile maker 312 westbound for a single vehicle injury accident. 

The Geary County Sheriff's Department said that Stacey J. Richard of Junction City was traveling westbound in her Toyota Sienna when she swerved to avoid debris in the roadway. Richard over corrected and lost control of her vehicle causing it to leave the roadway into the north ditch striking a tree. 

Richard was transported to Stormont Vail Flint hills for medical evaluation. The vehicle was removed from the scene by Buds Wrecker Service.

Application period opens for Flint Hills Regional Leadership Program

The Military Affairs Council with the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce will host their 2nd annual Armed Forces Day Celebration this Saturday, May 17. The event will be from 9:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. at the Northeast corner of 9th and Washington in Downtown Junction City.

The Celebration will feature live music, a Fort Riley Military Vehicle Display, Military and veteran-affiliated organizations, food trucks, and activities for kids. Col. Jerry Nunziato, Fort Riley’s Garrison Commander, will also deliver remarks.

Rob Wilson is the director of the Military Affairs Council for the Chamber of Commerce and discussed the history of Armed Forces Day. “Essentially it was established in 1949 by the Secretary of Defense and it replaced celebrating individual branches and brought them all together as a unity to show that support,” Wilson said. Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of May every year nationwide. “They had the goals of celebrating service members, promoting unity, public awareness, and community support.”

The celebration is a family-friendly event, and it is free to attend. “We want all families associated with service members to come out and enjoy themselves,” Rob Wilson said. “There will be things for kids to do, such as bounce houses, and getting their face painted which is all free to them. Essentially, we want to bring our community of Fort Riley into the community of Junction City so we can celebrate this together.”

Geary County Commissioners have approved a five-year agreement with the City of Junction City on EMS services. A mediator provided assistance on the matter in the long running dispute over fees charged by the city and paid by the county. City Atorney Britain Stites also told the county that the proposed agreement will go to the Junction City Commission on May 20 with a staff recommendation for approval.&nbsp;&nbsp;

County Commissioner Trish Giordano said, "I appreciate all the hard work on both sides."She also added that she thought "a joint agreement was the best thing for the community."

Commisssioner Kathy Tremont noted that she was glad to hear that there would be good communication along the way so the issue doesn't come up again.

County Chairman Keith Ascher apologized to the public that it took this long to get to get where they're at. He considers it a good agreement for the entire county.

Ascher confirmed the agreement includes $72,500 per year for capital improvement equipment from the county, the city will charge the county&nbsp; a flat fee of $157,000 per month and share information with the county on the financial documentation.

The proposed agreement ( still pending city consideration ) supersedes all previous EMS agreements dating back to 1967.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is warning the public about a fraudulent text message circulating across the state that falsely claims to be selling discounted shirts in support of the agency.

Officials say the message includes a suspicious link and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Kansas Highway Patrol. The texts are part of a “smishing” scam — a phishing attempt delivered via SMS — designed to trick recipients into revealing personal information.

Authorities urge anyone who receives such a message not to click the link.&nbsp;

"The Kansas Highway Patrol does not send unsolicited text messages and does not sell merchandise online," the agency said in a statement Monday.

Residents who receive similar messages are encouraged to report them to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at <a href="http://www.ic3.gov">www.ic3.gov</a> to help authorities track and stop the scam.

Fake text message scam targets residents with KHP shirt offer 

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas felon on new allegations.

Just after 11a.m. Friday, detectives served a search warrant in the 2100 block of Fort Riley Blvd. regarding the illegal possession of controlled substances, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 42-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman later identified as Decemantrea Richardson were listed as suspects in the case. It was reported they possessed methamphetamine, cocaine, a defaced firearm, and drug paraphernalia with the intent to distribute.

Richardson remains in custody on a $15,000 boind on requested charges of criminal possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, possession of cocaine, possession of paraphernalia with intent to distribute and defacing identification marks on a firearm.&nbsp;

The Junction City Fire Department has finished with hydrant flushing for the year. Fire Chief Jason Lankas said that they will now focus on painting the hydrants. Some of the hydrants have obstructions from shrubs, bushes, hanging tree limbs and landscaping etc. They would like property owners to help with the obstructions around the hydrant. If this is not corrected the city will take action to correct it.

The fire department determines the color of the hydrant, and that the property owner may NOT paint the hydrant to a color of their choosing themselves.

Junction City Fire Department will begin painting fire hydrants

The wheat curl mite is a small but mighty adversary of Kansas wheat producers as the vector for Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV), Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV) and High Plains Mosaic Virus. Fueled by a combination of the right weather conditions and ample volunteer wheat and other safe harbors, producers across the state appear to be losing the battle against these tiny critters and the diseases they carry in what could be the worst WSMV outbreak since 2017.&nbsp;

“We have some fields that are close to total losses,” said Kelsey Andersen Onofre, K-State assistant professor of plant pathology, who has been across the state scouting fields. “It’s hard to walk in a wheat field in Kansas right now and not find at least low-level, trace-level symptoms of WSMV, and that’s pretty unusual.”

Andersen Onofre explained that symptoms of WSMV — symptomatic leaves with dark green coloring and light-yellow discolorations or stunted plants with a distinct yellow discoloration — are showing up more clearly over the last few weeks as temperatures warm up, but the cause happened last summer and fall. A suspected high population of mites last summer found a place to hide for the summer, fall and winter — most commonly in volunteer wheat or volunteer wheat hidden in a field of cover crops or double crop acres. Mites survive the winter in these “green bridges” and mild weather meant populations stayed fairly high&nbsp;— so high that mites were able to disperse over long distances, up to one or two miles away from a source, and there are now concerning levels of the diseases they carry across the state.

“If we have an extended, warm fall, like we did in 2024, it’s a perfect storm for mite populations to stay at high levels and increase later in the season,” Andersen Onofre said. “The more populations increase, the higher the chance they will be blown by wind into neighboring fields. If the weather stays warm, we can see this spread continue over long distances.”

That is certainly the case in Saline County, where more diverse cropping systems are making it an emerging issue where it hasn’t traditionally been found.

“This is by far the worst year I’ve seen for impact of wheat streak mosaic virus in our area,” said Gypsum farmer Justin Knopf. “Many fields have been affected with a high level of presence of the virus. Some fields, where they’re right next to a field where the source was, have significant impact.”

Infected fields at this point in the plant’s growth stage near flowering will often not head out well or will have low grain fill, meaning producers with infected fields should expect yield loss, especially in fields where the flag leaf has already turned yellow.&nbsp;

“Unless we have a significant weather event such as hail or excessive heat during grain fill, wheat streak mosaic virus is likely to be the number one cause of yield loss in this area,” said Knopf.

Adding insult to injury, there is no effective treatment for WSMV once the infection has occurred. Producers must balance estimated yield loss, requirements for crop insurance and the economics behind terminating the most severely infected fields in favor of planting a summer crop.&nbsp;

“Unfortunately, there is not much to do at this point in the season if you have a field that has severe WSMV infection. These fields are likely not good candidates for a fungicide application. Fungicides will have no effect on wheat streak, and it will be difficult to recover yield losses from foliar diseases if yield potential is already reduced by wheat streak.” Andersen Onofre said. “We do not recommend spraying insecticides or miticides. There is no immediate action you can take to slow down the spread of WSMV or preserve yield in affected fields.”&nbsp;

Increased instances of the viruses this year has farmers thinking about the longer-term causes. Knopf attributed the widespread infection this year to three really dry falls and winters in a row, more hail in the area last year (areas with hail are virus hot spots) and more diverse cropping systems, including warm season cover crops and double cropping.

Producers who selected wheat varieties with known tolerance or genetic resistance to WSMV are seeing the benefit of that decision.

“I haven’t historically selected varieties based on WSMV resistance in this area, but it will certainly be on my mind for next year’s crop,” said Knopf.

“We do not have any perfect resistance, but variety selection is making a difference under this really high pressure situation,” Andersen Onofre said. However, she cautioned producers that even varieties with tolerance or genetic resistance to WSMV may still be susceptible to Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV), and dual infections of both diseases are also popping up. When fields are infected with both viruses, yield losses can be more severe. In addition to WSMV and TriMV, she also encouraged producers to monitor their risk of Fusarium head blight (scab) as weather conditions during flowering have been conducive to the development of scab and leaf spot diseases like tan spot and Septoria in parts of the state like central and southeast Kansas. These wheat diseases can be managed with fungicide applications. A Fusarium Risk Tool is available at wheatscab.psu.edu for producers to manage their risk. Unlike WSMV, producers cannot scout fields to see FHB, so they must make application decisions based on individual field risk, which is particularly important for wheat fields planted into corn residue. “We are recommending producers watch the FHB risk pretty carefully, especially right now in central and southeast Kansas, as we are in that flowering window and we have had favorable conditions,” she said.&nbsp;

Producers will have the chance to speak with K-State extension experts and local field staff and agronomists during the upcoming winter wheat variety plot tours that start May 13. The plot tours will provide a chance to see how different available and upcoming wheat varieties are reacting to the disease pressure this season.  </figure>The wheat curl mite is a small but mighty adversary of Kansas wheat producers as the vector for Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV), Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV) and High Plains Mosaic Virus. Fueled by a combination of the right weather conditions and ample volunteer wheat and other safe harbors, producers across the state appear to be losing the battle against these tiny critters and the diseases they carry in what could be the worst WSMV outbreak since 2017.&nbsp;“We have some fields that are close to total losses,” said Kelsey Andersen Onofre, K-State assistant professor of plant pathology, who has been across the state scouting fields. “It’s hard to walk in a wheat field in Kansas right now and not find at least low-level, trace-level symptoms of WSMV, and that’s pretty unusual.”Andersen Onofre explained that symptoms of WSMV — symptomatic leaves with dark green coloring and light-yellow discolorations or stunted plants with a distinct yellow discoloration — are showing up more clearly over the last few weeks as temperatures warm up, but the cause happened last summer and fall. A suspected high population of mites last summer found a place to hide for the summer, fall and winter — most commonly in volunteer wheat or volunteer wheat hidden in a field of cover crops or double crop acres. Mites survive the winter in these “green bridges” and mild weather meant populations stayed fairly high&nbsp;— so high that mites were able to disperse over long distances, up to one or two miles away from a source, and there are now concerning levels of the diseases they carry across the state.“If we have an extended, warm fall, like we did in 2024, it’s a perfect storm for mite populations to stay at high levels and increase later in the season,” Andersen Onofre said. “The more populations increase, the higher the chance they will be blown by wind into neighboring fields. If the weather stays warm, we can see this spread continue over long distances.”That is certainly the case in Saline County, where more diverse cropping systems are making it an emerging issue where it hasn’t traditionally been found.“This is by far the worst year I’ve seen for impact of wheat streak mosaic virus in our area,” said Gypsum farmer Justin Knopf. “Many fields have been affected with a high level of presence of the virus. Some fields, where they’re right next to a field where the source was, have significant impact.”Infected fields at this point in the plant’s growth stage near flowering will often not head out well or will have low grain fill, meaning producers with infected fields should expect yield loss, especially in fields where the flag leaf has already turned yellow.&nbsp;“Unless we have a significant weather event such as hail or excessive heat during grain fill, wheat streak mosaic virus is likely to be the number one cause of yield loss in this area,” said Knopf.Adding insult to injury, there is no effective treatment for WSMV once the infection has occurred. Producers must balance estimated yield loss, requirements for crop insurance and the economics behind terminating the most severely infected fields in favor of planting a summer crop.&nbsp;“Unfortunately, there is not much to do at this point in the season if you have a field that has severe WSMV infection. These fields are likely not good candidates for a fungicide application. Fungicides will have no effect on wheat streak, and it will be difficult to recover yield losses from foliar diseases if yield potential is already reduced by wheat streak.” Andersen Onofre said. “We do not recommend spraying insecticides or miticides. There is no immediate action you can take to slow down the spread of WSMV or preserve yield in affected fields.”&nbsp;Increased instances of the viruses this year has farmers thinking about the longer-term causes. Knopf attributed the widespread infection this year to three really dry falls and winters in a row, more hail in the area last year (areas with hail are virus hot spots) and more diverse cropping systems, including warm season cover crops and double cropping.Producers who selected wheat varieties with known tolerance or genetic resistance to WSMV are seeing the benefit of that decision.“I haven’t historically selected varieties based on WSMV resistance in this area, but it will certainly be on my mind for next year’s crop,” said Knopf.“We do not have any perfect resistance, but variety selection is making a difference under this really high pressure situation,” Andersen Onofre said. However, she cautioned producers that even varieties with tolerance or genetic resistance to WSMV may still be susceptible to Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV), and dual infections of both diseases are also popping up. When fields are infected with both viruses, yield losses can be more severe. These wheat diseases can be managed with fungicide applications. A Fusarium Risk Tool is available at wheatscab.psu.edu for producers to manage their risk. Unlike WSMV, producers cannot scout fields to see FHB, so they must make application decisions based on individual field risk, which is particularly important for wheat fields planted into corn residue. The Geary County Historical Society and the McDowell Creek Community will host an open house at St. Joseph's Historic Church on Saturday, May 17th from 10am-1pm. Located at 13497 Lower McDowell Creek Road, the church has been relatively inaccessible over the past year as the bridge at Exit 307 over I-70 had been closed for construction, but work has still been ongoing throughout the road closures.

  St. Joseph's is an ongoing restoration project for the Geary County Historical Society and over the past year work has been completed on interior plaster repairs and a new roof and gutters have been installed. The open house will be an opportunity for those interested in the history of the 115-year-old building or the restoration work to visit. 

All are welcome and the event is free, though donations are welcome and will go toward the next stages in the restoration project.&nbsp;

The final meeting of the year of the Junction City Association of Retired School Personnel was held May 9.&nbsp; A memorial service for those who were lost, but not forgotten was led by Louise Jahnke, JCARSP Chaplain. Special remembrance was offered for Judy Rosa, who died during this year.&nbsp;

&nbsp;The evening concluded with appreciation shown to Peggy Bennett, who is retiring as Calling Committee Chairperson and Louise, who will continue as Chaplain. Shelley Buchanan will be the Calling Committee Chairperson next year. Others recognized were Anita Rogge, Vice President; Nita Miller, Secretary; Sheila Ritchie and Margaret Kilpatrick, Past President.

Installation of new officers included Sierra Jackson, President; Dr. Beth Hudson, Vice President; Nita Miller will continue as Secretary; Sheila Ritchie, who will continue as Treasurer and Ferrell Miller&nbsp; will be the Past President.&nbsp;

JCARSP holds final meeting for the school year

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae.

The water recreation season in Kansas officially runs from April 1 to Oct. 31, as do the harmful algae blooms (HAB) response program's active operations. Kansans should remain vigilant while engaging in activities taking place in or on the water, such as swimming, boating, and fishing.

A HAB may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g., direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache.

If you, or your pets, come into contact with algae rinse the area with clean, fresh water. Suspected HAB-related health incidents, whether human or animal, regardless of season, should be reported as soon as possible at<a target="_blank" href="https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.kdhe.ks.gov%2F1163%2FReport-an-Illness%3Futm_medium=email%26utm_source=govdelivery/1/01000196b66bd153-9dbbbfdc-4c17-42b9-8808-912b9546562c-000000/_9auEaJOsAU3jBx5YnLw7HP4bIqkbOVAS2augKdycmM=404">&nbsp;kdhe.ks.gov/1163</a>.

A&nbsp;Hazard status&nbsp;indicates that a HAB is present, and extreme conditions exist.

Advisories are&nbsp;Lifted&nbsp;when cell densities and toxin concentrations dissipate to levels below the Watch thresholds.

KDHE investigates publicly accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.&nbsp;

If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

Kansans should remain vigilant while engaging in activities taking place in or on the water, such as swimming, boating, and fishing.A HAB may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. KDHE Issues Blue-Green Algae Advisory

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating drug distribution in Riley County and have made five arrests.

On May 8, 2025, at approximately 6:21 p.m., officers conducted a traffic stop in the 2300 block of Fort Riley Blvd., according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. A 36-year-old male was reported as driving a motor vehicle with an expired registration and a suspended driver's license. &nbsp;A subsequence search of the vehicle was conducted, leading to the discovery of a distributable amount of methamphetamine.

Just after 11:30p.m. on May 8, detectives executed a search warrant in the 2100 block of Elm Lane. Detectives filed a report for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute, aggravated endangering a child and possession of marijuana. A 36-year-old male and a 30-year-old female were listed as suspects when it was reported that methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia were located after the execution of a search warrant. Two juvenile children were present and were listed as victims in the report. &nbsp;

Cody Dodge, 36, of Manhattan, was arrested on May 8, 2025, for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute, aggravated endangerment of a child and possession of marijuana. Dodge was also arrested for driving while suspended and a second count of distribution of methamphetamine. Dodge was issued a total bond of $60,000 and is confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report.

Brittanie Vaughn, 30, of Manhattan, was arrested on May 9, 2025, for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute, aggravated endangering a child and possession of marijuana. Vaughn was issued a total bond of $27,000 and is confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report.

All races will begin at 7:30 a.m. from Downtown Junction City, with the finish at Heritage Park.

The certification for the 10K course marks a significant milestone for the event, allowing runners to use their times for qualification purposes at other races nationwide.

"Achieving certification for our 10K course elevates the Freedom Run to a new level of competitive excellence," says Terrah Stroda, event coordinator. " Starting in downtown Junction City creates that special hometown energy while our certified route delivers professional-caliber racing."

Race organizers continue to prioritize the runner experience with enhanced water stops, precision course markings and chip timing.&nbsp;

All three courses will begin simultaneously at the intersection of 8th and Washington in downtown Junction City, creating a mass start that has become a highlight of the event.
