Entrepreneurs in the Flint Hills region have an opportunity this month to jumpstart their business ideas, thanks to a new workshop series designed to spark innovation and provide practical guidance for aspiring business owners. 

The Flint Regional Council announced that Regional Entrepreneurship 101: Idea to Action Workshop will be held on Saturday, May 24th at two locations. The Wamego workshop will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Iron Clad Coworking, while the Junction City session will be hosted from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at The WorkStation. Participants will gain insights into business planning, local resources, and the steps needed to move their ideas forward. 

Whether you're just getting started or looking to grow a side hustle, this 4-hour interactive session is designed to provide meaningful momentum. One participant will win a business launch package featuring business services that will support their business venture.

The workshops are hosted by Flint Hills Regional Council, in partnership with Junction City Main Street, and are funded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and the Kansas Department of Commerce. Space is limited, and early RSVP is encouraged.  Regional Workshops Aim to Turn Local Ideas Into Action

A pitch challenge for veterans called “Vet Epic” was held Thursday night in Junction City, hosted by the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce. All three divisions of the Chamber were involved; Economic Development, the Military Affairs Council, and the Membership Division.

Mickey Fornaro-Dean, the President of Operations for the Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Director explained that the vision for this competition was to help the veterans and entrepreneurs who have ideas but don’t know exactly what to do with the idea. “The genesis of this idea is to support veterans and also entrepreneur-ism and new businesses in the Junction City area,” Fornaro-Dean said.

The Veteran Entrepreneur Pitch challenge consisted of four “classes” that focused on introduction to business, marketing, financing, and pitch preparation. The pitch part of the competition was held at JC Naz in Junction City, on Thursday, May 8, and 10 entrepreneurs pitched their business to a panel of four judges. The contestants were competing for up to $10,000 in prize money. ($5,000 to first place, $3,000 to second place, and $2,000 to third place). Participants had three minutes to pitch their business to the judges, and then the judges had two minutes for questions.

The first-place winner of the first Vet Epic Pitch challenge is Megan and Ryan Woods, with Blue Bird Speech Therapy. They received $5,000 to put toward their new business. Megan and Ryan are speech pathologists who plan to provide skilled and passionate speech therapy to the Junction City Community. Megan told the judges that over 1,000 individuals in Geary County need speech therapy. Megan Woods said that the $5,000 winnings will go toward purchasing apps for their non-speaking clients and software for electronic billing, insurance purposes, and more.

The second-place winner is Matta Aviation Services, owned and operated by Eduardo Matta Figueroa. Matta Aviation Services already operates in Junction City. Eduardo told the judges that they are an all-in-one aviation shop and experience. Matta teaches flight safety classes and certifications and also trains mechanics to work in his shop. He noted that Matta Aviation Services has had individuals from Dubai, Africa, Europe, and many other countries FAA-certified through them. With the $3,000 win from the competition, Eduardo plans to use it for marketing and advertising by getting his name and business out to the public.

The third-place winner is Midwest Coachworks, owned by Christopher Gaer. This business is 100% veteran-owned and operated and is currently expanding in Junction City. Gaer explained that the motto for his business is integrity, respect, and service. Midwest Coachworks is an auto-body repair and maintenance business. Currently, there are three technicians on staff, and the new facility they are expanding into will be a 2,400-square-foot facility. Gaer noted that the plan is to keep two locations open. With the $2,000 win for third place, Midwest Coachworks will use the money to get involved with the Fort Riley Career Skills Program for promotional items and marketing materials.

Celebrate the 55+ Community at “Senior Night” with Valley View Senior Life

The Junction City Police Department’s Law Enforcement Summer Camp is a camp designed for middle school children. It is an outreach program developed to help students become more aware of First Responders’ functions. The purpose is to build life skills, instill confidence and develop self-esteem. The curriculum will include a wide variety of activities that will incorporate teamwork, physical fitness, and general First Responders’ information. The camp will emphasize the importance of good decision-making skills and teaching good citizenship.

JCPD School Resource Officers will conduct the camp, which allows them to maintain a good working relationship over the summer with their students. Students will observe presentations made by a K9 officer, SWAT Team members, Patrol Officers, School Resource Officers and other emergency services.

Students are given the opportunity to understand what it is like for someone to be under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances, through the use of simulator devices. They will learn how drug dogs can search and identify illegal substances. Students will observe some of the techniques and equipment used by SWAT members. They will have an opportunity to observe a Police Chase where Stop Sticks will be deployed and ending in a High-Risk Traffic Stop. The students will experience a day at the Milford Lake Hatchery and at the local swimming pool.

There will be&nbsp; activities such as swimming, bowling and hatchery to make the week not only educational but also enjoyable.

Camp will&nbsp; held June 9th – 13th from 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM Monday – Friday. It will be directed by School Resources Officers from the Junction City Police Department.

Lunch &amp; snacks &amp; water bottles will be provided.

Expenses are covered by the Junction City Police Department.&nbsp;

APPLICANTS MUST BE GOING INTO THE 7TH, 8TH OR 9TH GRADE IN THE FALL OF 2025.

--There were recent improvements to Coronado Park with playground equipment. Commissioner Richard Pinaire has pointed out that something still needs to be done with the tennis court at that location.

--Pinaire has suggested that the City recognize former Blue Jay and K-State running back DJ Giddens. He was recently drafted by the Indianapolis Colts of the NFL.&nbsp;

--Pinaire praised cleanup work done by a business, Wildcat Motors, and encouraged other businesses in the Grant Avenue area to do something as well.

--Commissioners heard a report on electric vehicle charging stations and that there is only one in Junction City. More are needed. Leon Osburn pointed out that there was an effort in the past to seek KDOT approval and that it should be tried again.

--City Manager Kim Zimmerman indicated that he plans to bring a power point presentation to the governing body asking for support ( money ) to make on specific street, alley and parks locations that need fixing.

--There will be an Adult Skate night on May 16 at Spin City.

--A Big Rigs and Trucks event will be hosted on May 17 at the 12th Street Community Center.

The workshop is presented by Nancy Daniels, a community vitality specialist with K-State Research and Extension and the author of many grant proposals. The Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting on Wednesday afternoon to officially open the Flint Hills BreadBasket's new location at 2326 Skyvue Lane in Manhattan. The ribbon-cutting drew a large turnout, with many elected officials, business professionals, and patrons in attendance.

Flint Hills BreadBasket Executive Director Karla Hagemeister addressed the crowd, and her message was that the new facility would not have been possible without the communities support.

"There's just a reality that our services are needed and will continue to be needed for some time to come," Hagemeister said. "When our board, staff, and volunteers talk about the guests that we serve and the community that we serve, we felt that it was important to us and to our values that we offer a space and a service that is dignified and valuable and treats people the way we would want any one of us to be treated. I feel like our community has made that space happen here." In her speech, Hagemeister recognized the Flint Hills BreadBasket Board of Directors, the staff, all their volunteers, business partners, and the community for all their support.

The community campaign for the project was $3.1 million, and the money raised by the community helped with equipment and construction. The construction budget was $2.5 million.

The new location at 2326 Skyvue Lane will be open for the first time Thursday, May 8, at 10:00 a.m. and be open until 6:00 p.m. This location allows for expanded hours and a less crowded space for patrons and staff.

According to Hagemeister, the Flint Hills BreadBasket serves approximately 400 families per week. Daily, the Flint Hills BreadBasket serves between 60-70 families.

"This place is going to serve our community, and serve our community well and in changing ways over time," Hagemeister said. "I am so excited for that to happen."

Following the ribbon-cutting, the large crowd was able to tour the new facility.

Saturday, May 17th is the date for the Geary County Senior Center Community Yard Sale. The event will run from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Toyota Corolla driven by Salman&nbsp;Shinwari, 16, Manhattan, was&nbsp;northbound on U.S. 77 approximately one mile south of West Lyons Creek Road.&nbsp;

Junction City Commissioners have agreed to provide $7,500 to the Family YMCA to help with the cost of a new gym floor if Geary County provides that amount. If the county says no the topic returns to the city to reconsider what action to take.The YMCA had sought $15,000 from the city and also planned to go to the county commission on the matter.

The YMCA has been working on upgrades to repair structural walls and the pool area. It is now time to redo the basketball court in the facility. Before the discussion with city officials a total of $45,000 had been raised for the basketball court project.

City hears about Family YMCA funding request

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. – Elyse Nguyen, a 2021 Junction City High School graduate, has definitely made the most of her time as a student at Yale University. She will graduate from Yale, one of the most prestigious universities in the world, with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology on Monday, May 19.

“Being a Yale graduate gives me a lot of pride. I am very honored to share not only a part of my identity with so many amazing people and peers whom I am going to graduate with, but also several other amazing alumni who are doing great work throughout the world now and have done great things throughout history,” said Nguyen.

While at Yale, Nguyen recently received the Dwight Hall Mental Health Fellowship, a one-year financial award for students with a passion for community mental health, which supports current shadowing and research activities at both the Yale School of Nursing and Connecticut Mental Health Center. She is also a member of the Psi Chi Membership, an International Honor Society in Psychology.Following graduation, Nguyen, who is Vietnamese American, will be attending the Yale School of Nursing in August with goals of becoming a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner - PMHNP.

“The program is three years long and will allow me to sit for the NCLEX exam and become a registered nurse after one year while also graduating with a master’s degree in nursing after two more years of school. I will also be eligible to sit for the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner board certification exam and be both an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse and a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner,” said Nguyen, who plans to be a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at a community health center and serve underserved populations following her time at Yale.

In about two weeks when Nguyen walks across the stage, she will do so proudly as she will be the first member of her family to graduate&nbsp;from a university in the United States as her parents Tina Pham and Nhan Nguyen are both from Vietnam and migrated to America in 2002. Her mother, Tina, who currently works at Lincoln Elementary as a cafeteria worker, graduated from college in Vietnam, but did not complete her graduate degree. Her father, Nhan, was stationed at Fort Riley.

&nbsp; During her time as a student in Geary County Schools USD 475, Nguyen attended Morris Hill Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Junction City Middle School, the Freshman Success Academy and Junction City High School.At every stop along the way, she learned so many valuable lessons that she still uses today.

“I am really thankful to all the teachers I had during my time in JCHS and in USD 475. I feel like I had the best, most supportive teachers ever. I really owe it to teachers for nurturing my love for learning and allowing me to keep challenging myself. I am also really grateful for the career path system that JCHS had. It allowed me to take so many courses in various career fields and narrow down my interests. It also meant I got to take so many classes that don’t have much to do with my current career plans but that I still really enjoyed like Intro to Accounting and Intro to Drawing,” said Nguyen.

Those teachers that were so supportive of Nguyen in USD 475 like Lincoln Elementary’s Jennifer Farr, former Lincoln principal Kathi Teeter, now Junction City Middle School’s Tyrek Artley, Junction City High School’s Alicia Goheen, Michael Brown and Nancy Dettmer, as well as countless others she named throughout the district are still making a difference in her life today even though she is 1,404.8 miles away. She looks back at her time with them fondly as they really poured into her and allowed her to shine throughout her time in USD 475 and at Yale.“I could honestly write a personal thank you note to everyone and so many other teachers who I am unfortunately forgetting the names of at this exact moment.

Nguyen Excelling at Yale University

The United Soybean Board, which oversees the funds of the national checkoff, is seeking farmer-leaders to serve on the national board. Kansas has two director positions to fill following December term completions for Kurt Maurath, Oakley, and Lance Rezac, Onaga.

The mission of the soybean checkoff is to create value for U.S. soybean farmers by investing in research, education and promotion of U.S.-grown soy. Farmer-leaders are able to elevate their perspectives and direct those investments through service on the board. The checkoff’s current return-on-investment of $12.30 back to farmers for each dollar invested demonstrates the checkoff’s efficacy in driving profitability for every acre of soybeans.

Dennis Gruenbacher, Andale, sought a USB director position in 2018 because he saw an opportunity to find more end uses for soybeans and ultimately improve prices for growers. He remarks that the checkoff has done just that through developing tires from soybean oil and other value-added projects.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, which handles the appointment process, eligible nominees include “soybean producers within the U.S. who own or share ownership and risk of loss of soybean production.” Board members are required to attend the February, July and December meetings annually as well as various conference calls and other events. Leaders volunteer their time to serve but are reimbursed for travel and other expenses related to attending meetings and events on behalf of USB.

The position is open to all individuals without regard to their protected statuses including race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, marital or family status, political beliefs, parental status, or other protected information. KSC works to ensure that its nominees to USB reflect the diversity in the size of enterprise, experience, methods of production and distribution, marketing strategies, and other distinguishing factors that represent Kansas soybean farmers.

Kansas has two director positions to fill following December term completions for Kurt Maurath, Oakley, and Lance Rezac, Onaga.The mission of the soybean checkoff is to create value for U.S. soybean farmers by investing in research, education and promotion of U.S.-grown soy. Farmer-leaders are able to elevate their perspectives and direct those investments through service on the board. The checkoff’s current return-on-investment of $12.30 back to farmers for each dollar invested demonstrates the checkoff’s efficacy in driving profitability for every acre of soybeans.Dennis Gruenbacher, Andale, sought a USB director position in 2018 because he saw an opportunity to find more end uses for soybeans and ultimately improve prices for growers. KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In an unprecedented nationwide operation to protect children and mark April’s National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the FBI announces Operation Restore Justice, a five day, sweeping FBI initiative to identify, track, and arrest child sex predators across the country in coordination with all 55 of our FBI field offices.

The Kansas City Field Office arrested 6 people as part of this week-long operation. This included the following announcements:

Trevor Teegarden, 34, of Liberty, Missouri was charged with attempted production, distribution of Child Sex Abuse Material (CSAM), and possession of CSAM, transfer of obscene material.&nbsp; Andrew Charles Nicholls, 38, of Columbia, Missouri was charged with receipt of CSAM.

Clinton John Gray, 47, of Joplin, Missouri was charged with distribution/ receipt of child pornography.

Andrew Charles Nicholls, 38, of Columbia, Missouri was charged with receipt of CSAM.&nbsp;

Christopher Davis, 39, of Wellington, Kansas was charged with distribution of CSAM and possession of CSAM.

Christopher Slattery, 42 of Manhattan, Kansas was charged with possession of CSAM.
