Geary County Rural Water District #4 will be connecting new construction into their existing lines. These lines are the main lines to the tower and lines that connect the system from there. This will be taking place on Tuesday, Jan 4 and Wednesday January 5 starting at 8 a.m. each day. 

These are major connections and will take some time to complete. Officials are doing everything they can to keep water in service to the customers, but some areas will lose water and pressure. They noted that they will restore service as soon as possible.&nbsp;

Geary County Treasurer's Office Manager Sheri Childs has announced that there will be a retirement party for Kathy Tremont, celebrating her legacy of achievement. Tremont is retiring from the Geary County Treasurer's post on Feb. 1.

The retirement party is scheduled from 1-4 p.m. on Jan. 28th at the Geary County Office Building, 200 East 8th Street.&nbsp;

Geary County Extension Agent Chuck Otte said Monday that even with the nose dive into winter weather that occurred at the very end of the month and year, December still wound up being the hottest December on record. The dry weather continued however. The average daily high during December was 53.7, 11.2 degrees above normal. The average overnight low was 31.5, 8.6 degrees above normal. This gave us a monthly mean temperature of 42.6, 9.9 degrees above normal. This monthly mean temperature displaced December of 1957, with a monthly mean temperature of 40.2. December of 1959 was a hot one also at 40.0. The mid to late 1950s were a hot period in our local weather history!

The highest temperature for the month was the high of 75 degrees on December 15th thanks to those high winds that day pushing warm air from the south. A few days later, on December 18th, we had our lowest temperature of the month with a morning low of 10 degrees which was brought to us by the north winds that pushed in behind that big derecho event. 

Not surprisingly there were temperature records set during December. The high of 66 on the 14th broke the old record of 63 set in 1966 and 2006. The high of 75 on the 15th broke the old record of 68 set in 2002. The high of 68 on the 23rd broke the old record of 67 set in 1955. The overnight low of 61 on the 15th broke the old record high low temperature of 44 set in 1957! And the low temperature of 43 on the 14th tied the record high low for that date, first set in 1959. The only precipitation received during December was in conjunction with the storm that blew through the afternoon of the 15th and that rainfall was very inconsistent around the area. In Junction City we received 0.32 inches but at Milford Lake they received no precipitation.

Milford Lake received no precipitation from November 11th until the snow that came through on January 1st, a period of 52 days. This surpasses the previous modern day era record of 47 rainless days Which occurred from October 20, 1966 through December 5, 1966. With no measurable precipitation recorded at Milford Lake for the month of December, that ties December 2021 with December 1966 for the driest December (0.00") on record. It could be worse, December 2007 was the wettest December on record with 3.88 inches of precipitation. Unfortunately, most of that came as an ice storm! For the year just ended Junction City received 29.85 inches of rain and Milford Lake 24.84 inches. Normal annual precipitation is 33.57 inches. There was no snow recorded in Junction City during December. Through the end of December there was no seasonal snowfall yet recorded.

January, on average, is the coldest month of the year, the driest month of the year and tied as the snowiest month of the year. We normally expect to receive 4.7 inches of snow but a liquid precipitation equivalent of only 0.77". Looking at long term averages January doesn’t show much temperature fluctuation with daytime highs starting the new year at 38 and by the end of the month they are up to 42. Overnight lows range from 18 on the 1st to 20 on the 31st. Looking at long term average temperatures, January 4th is the coldest day of the year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Chuck Otte releases December weather summary

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 10:30a.m. Monday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway&nbsp; Patrol reported a 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by&nbsp; Michael Undray Powell, 25, Cataula, Georgia, was southbound on Kansas 177 four miles south of Manhattan.&nbsp;

The SUV traveled into the west ditch, went airborne for 100 feet, rolled end over end and came to rest on its side facing south.

EMS transported Powell for treatment in Manhattan. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Driver hospitalized in Manhattan after violent SUV crash

Geary Community Hospital is preparing to close the Intensive Care Unit, no later than Feb. 1.&nbsp;

LJ Baker, Director of HR &amp; External Relations, said due to a national COVID-19 exacerbated nursing shortage, as well as fiscal situations beyond control of the Hospital, they can no longer effectively operate an Intensive Care Unit. To ensure safe and quality care for patients currently in the ICU, it is the intent of GCH to conduct a deliberate and phased transition of closing the unit. In the interim they are coordinating with multiple hospitals in the state and region to identify beds and facilitate required treatment for patients.

Baker stated, "It is very important to note that GCH itself will remain open and continue to provide quality healthcare to our community. While some departments will be impacted, emergency care, critical support services and clinics will remain available for our patients."

Baker added during the transition of services GCH will make every effort to retain staff by reassigning employees to understaffed departments.

Just before 1pm. on December 30, officers filed a report for fraud in the 9700 block of Lasita Road in Leonardville 

A 52-year-old woman reported an unknown suspect used her financial card six separate times at two separate 7 Eleven gas stations in Oklahoma. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $750. 

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

RCPD: Suspect allegedly used woman's credit cards in Oklahoma

Fire destroyed a barn at the Dickinson County residence of Lynn Langvardt at 2224 K-18 Highway Sunday evening. There were not any injuries reported.

Dickinson County District One Fire Chief Paul Froelich reported that the barn was a total loss. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

Geary County rural firefighters assisted the firefighters from Dickinson County in putting out the blaze. Firefighters responded to the scene just before 7 p.m. and were able to depart about 9:45 p.m.

Jackie Mundt, Pratt&nbsp;County farmer and rancher Social media has been full recently of the typical posts about what people are hoping to accomplish in 2022. These posts bring to mind something I read discussing how people who want to start or break habits are more likely to succeed if they start on first days — the first day of the week, month or especially the year. This is the presumed intention of a New Year’s resolutions: to tackle a goal or change that you have wanted or needed in your life. The reason people are more successful on these first days, according to the article, is the fresh start makes them more likely to hold themselves accountable. They still face the same obstacles, struggles and temptations as any other day, but it comes down choosing to change and internal determination to stick to it.&nbsp; The choice to persevere in the face of adversity is what matters when it comes to changing your life or accomplishment you will cherish. Things that come easy usually only offer a moment of enjoyment; hard-fought success brings a satisfaction that grows and sustains. A universal hope for 2022 is the pandemic ending and life returning to normalcy or predictability. Jan. 1, 2022 has come and gone but the post-pandemic life is still a dream on the horizon. Unfortunately, normalcy will not happen with the convenient motivation of a scheduled fresh-start date. So how will we know the right time to start the long lists of things we are going to change or accomplish when the pandemic is over? &nbsp; I am going to draw one last lesson from my trip to the Baltics with Kansas Farm Bureau’s Casten Fellows program last summer. Many of you have read about the inspiration I have gained from the cooperation, professionalism and pride shown by the Baltic people. However, these qualities are unremarkable if not examined in the context of the oppression and tumultuous history of occupation endured over centuries by these people. The Baltic people have a strong spirit and determination to protect their culture, traditions and language. We heard a first-hand account on the trip of the Baltic Way protest against Soviet occupation, which took place in 1989 as 2 million Baltic people joined hands in peaceful protest forming a human chain that spanned more than 400 miles across all three states. When the protests paid off and the countries gained freedom two years later, their economies collapsed without the collective contributions and infrastructure of all the Soviets states. We toured many businesses started with little or no relevant experience but plenty of understanding of fear and deprivation, which made failure seem somewhat insignificant. The most unexpected culture component was a shared national sense of humor. The style varied between countries from highly self-deprecating to too much truth to be anywhere near politically correct in others. One local described humor as the way they dealt with the realities of life saying, “at some point you can’t be sad or worried anymore, you just have to laugh about it.” &nbsp; Instead of waiting for the official end of the pandemic or New Year’s Day 2023, I think we should try to live like the Baltic people today. We can turn our dreams and beliefs into reality with our actions, not letting fear hold us back, and most importantly, having the ability to laugh at ourselves as we go.

A Fresh Start

You can ring in the new year by enjoying the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra in Junction City. In partnership with the C.L. Hoover Opera House, the R2B4 Bramlage Family Foundation is sponsoring the Jazz Concert to benefit Aging Well at the Spring Valley Campus. The concert, which was originally scheduled in December but had to be postponed due to the water emergency, is now scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 22nd.

Proceeds from this event will be used to support Aging Well at the Spring Valley Campus. Aging Well will provide long-term and assisted living services to seniors in a small home with a family style care approach. The non-profit, volunteer board reported that they have received financial support of over $2.2 million with just over $1 million left to raise.

Tickets purchased for the December date are transferrable for the January concert. Additional tickets are available now thru the C.L. Hoover Opera House.

Sen. Jerry Moran said this past weekend that there is evidence of Congress being able to work together. He referred to the annual cooperation on passage of a bipartisan National Defense Authorization Act. "Increasing the pay for Soldiers at Fort Riley and around the country 2.7%."

Moran said they gained approval for a monument on the national mall honoring those who served in the War on Terror. "That's a piece of legislation that I was a sponsor of and glad to see it included in NDAA."

The Senator's priorities included in the measure include conducting a study on military spouse employment, approval of construction of a new daycare facility on Fort Leavenworth, expansion and improvement of the Kansas National Guard's Joint Forces Headquarters building, and authorizing establishment of the independent Afghanistan War Commission to examine the full scope of the war.

Sen. Jerry Moran noted on Saturday it's the goal of his office in 2022 to continue the effort, as it has been the past two years,&nbsp; to ensure that Fort Riley could be a location for any future 1st Infantry Division third brigade, "a place that the Department of Defense, the Department of the Army decides that if there is going to be a third brigade that it would be at Fort Riley. That means our continued efforts to improve infrastructure at on Fort Riley."

Moran pointed to successes that have been accomplished with housing, medical care and education on the installation, including grant funding to help pay for a new elementary school at Fort Riley.

"Those are the kinds of things that we are certainly paying attention to, to get and maintain Fort Riley to be a place that more units, and ultimately a third brigade could be maintained."

Crews spent Saturday clearing area streets and roadways. In Junction City the Public Works Director, Ray Ibarra, said just after 11 a.m. that the City's crews began spreading salt about 7:30 a.m. and then the snow arrived. Later in the morning they were dealing with the snow. "Pushing snow, spreading the salt again. Be very careful right now. we're out there being able to clean the roads and get it cleaned for you. Just be real careful."

No major accidents had been reported as of about 11 a.m. in Geary County although police dispatch confirmed that some vehicles had gotten stuck in&nbsp; the Ash - Saint Mary's Road area.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) - Hundreds rang in the new year in Manhattan while the little apple dropped on top of the Aggieville Draft House building.

Beware ice could accompany the storm

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities investigating an April opioid-related death in Manhattan have made an arrest.

On Friday, police arrested Austin Dowling, 28, of Manhattan for the distribution of controlled substances causing great bodily harm - the alleged substances being Oxycodone and Fentanyl, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

Just before 11a.m. officers stopped Dowling after he was identified while driving near the intersection of Valleywood Drive and Barnes Road. in Manhattan and took him into custody without incident..

Dowling is being held on requested charges of two counts of distribution or possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, distribution of a controlled substance causing great bodily harm, and two counts of use of a communication facility for a drug transaction.

Dowling was also arrested on two additional warrants for probation violation and failure to appear. He is currently confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $116,000.

National Weather Service has updated the winter weather forecast.

--Wind chill advisory will be in effect from midnight Saturday night until 11 a.m. Sunday.

--Hazardous travel throughout Saturday. While snow ends Saturday evening, blowing snow and dangerous cold wind chills settle in with readings from -15 to -25 degrees below zero Sunday morning.

--A mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain expected along and south of I-70 this morning with ice accumulations less than a tenth of an inch.

--Dangerous wind chills arrive later Saturday morning and persist through much of the day Sunday

--Slight adjustments to snow totals. Storm remains on track to bring heaviest snowfall amounts up to 8 inches over far northern Kansas.

--Added Wind Chill Advisory for Saturday night

--Winter Storm Warning - 5 to 8 inches of snow

--Winter Weather Advisory - Mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain. Ice accumulation less than a tenth of an inch and snow of 1 to 4 inches.

A major winter storm is still on track to impact the area late tonight into Saturday.  Periods of heavy snow are likely with highest totals around 8 inches near the Nebraska border where a Winter Storm Warning is now in effect. 

 Across far east central Kansas, a wintry mix of mainly sleet mixed with light freezing rain is expected where a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect. The Winter Storm Watch remains for portions of the area (including Manhattan, Junction City and Topeka) where a slight shift in the models could lead to a Winter Storm Warning or Advisory being issued later today.  Current snowfall forecast ranges from 2 to 7 inches in this area.  Blowing snow and bitterly cold temperatures will make travel and being outside very hazardous throughout Saturday. 

 Today is the last day to prepare accordingly for the upcoming storm.
