MANHATTAN —The Riley County Police Department has&nbsp;responded to six&nbsp;fentanyl&nbsp;overdoses in just the past two weeks.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While none of the six resulted in death, these overdoses came from fake, pressed prescription pills containing&nbsp;fentanyl&nbsp;mostly oxycodone and Xanax.&nbsp;

Riley County Police&nbsp;emphasize&nbsp;that&nbsp;individuals&nbsp;who overdose&nbsp;are&nbsp;not&nbsp;suspects&nbsp;in&nbsp;their&nbsp;investigations. The goal is to identify, apprehend and prosecute the distributor and/distribution network.&nbsp;

Fentanyl is now the number one cause of death for Americans age 18-45. Fentanyl overtook and doubled the number two cause - suicide, in just one year.&nbsp;

Distribution of a controlled substance causing great bodily harm is a&nbsp;Level&nbsp;V&nbsp;felony. Distribution of a controlled substance causing death is a&nbsp;Level&nbsp;I&nbsp;felony.&nbsp;

It will feature Oscar winning, University of Kansas filmmaker and Junction City native Kevin Willmott, along with Christopher Harris, a researcher at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City. Ed O'Malley, Executive director of the Kansas Leadership Center will serve as facilitator.&nbsp;

The goal of the forum is to celebrate our diversity, continue and broaden the community's dialogue around race and equality, and begin to create a strategy to promote entrepreneurship and job creation in the region.

Willmott will focus on the entrepreneurial aspects of filmmaking and the unique challenges of being a minority filmmaker.&nbsp;

Harris will discuss data and trends that suggest the positive impact on rural areas of entrepreneurship along with business and job creation.

TOPEKA&nbsp;– A perfect storm of cold weather and expensive energy costs is headed to Kansas households heating bills this winter.

National gas costs are projected to rise by 30 percent while energy costs are expected to be six percent higher, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the Kansas Corporation Commission. They explain that high natural gas and energy usage from Winter Storm Uri in February 2021, high demands on natural gas from heat waves this summer, energy shortages in Europe and Asia, and declining domestic production, all combined will cause energy and natural gas costs to be higher than normal this winter.

“This strain on already stressed family financial situations is cause for concern,” said DCF Secretary Laura Howard. “The Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) is ready to assist Kansans with the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP).”

LIEAP provides an annual benefit to help qualifying households pay winter heating bills. Persons with disabilities, older adults and families with children are the primary groups assisted. Applications for the program will be accepted beginning Monday, Jan. 3. In 2021, 38,750 households received an average benefit of $1,389, an increase from 2020 when about 34,000 households received an average benefit of $960.

To qualify, applicants must be responsible for direct payment of their heating bills. Income eligibility requirements are set at 150 percent of the federal poverty level. The level of benefit varies according to household income, number of people living in the home, type of residence, type of heating fuel and utility rates.&nbsp;

Applicants need to have made payments on their heating bill two out of the last three months. Those payments must be equal to or exceed $80 or the total balance due on their energy bills, whichever is less.

Applications for the program have been mailed to households that received energy assistance last year. LIEAP applications are also available at local DCF offices and through partnering agencies starting Jan. 3. They can be requested by calling 1-800-432-0043. When you take down your tree remove all the ornaments, lights and stands and deposit the tree in the pile at that location.&nbsp;

On Saturday, Jan. 29, at 8:30 a.m. the trees will be hauled to a recycling point. Help with that project is welcome.

In past years the Association has collected and hauled natural Christmas trees after the holiday for use as wildlife or fish habitat, or grinding into mulch. That keeps the trees out of the landfills and benefits the environment.

This week, the Chair of the Hospital Board of Trustees, Theresa Bramlage, said they're discussing collaboration with other healthcare providers in the region. "We are still having conversation. I would imagine we're probably 30 to 60 days out from having something conclusive being announced.&nbsp;

GCH has been facing financial challenges for some time.

MORRIS COUNTY—Three people were injured in an accident just before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Morris County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Ford F150 driven by William M. Osborne, 81, Topeka, was northbound on Kansas 177 just south of Kansas Highway 4.&nbsp;

The pickup rear-ended a 2016 Chevy Malibu driven by Robin Robinson, 42, Osage City, who was&nbsp;following a slow-moving tractor and another uninvolved vehicle. 

Osborne then lost control of the Ford pickup. It rotated counterclockwise and was perpendicular to the roadway.&nbsp; A 2019 GMC Canyon driven by Abernathy, Nolan D. Abernathy, 19, Emporia, struck the passenger side of the Ford. 

The Ford and GMC pickup came to rest in the west ditch. The Chevy came to stop on the west shoulder.

EMS transported Abernathy and Robinson to the Morris County Hospital and Osborne to Stormont Vail in Topeka. An 8-month old girl in the Chevy was not injured and properly restrained, according to the KHP. Robinson was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Geary County health officials reported Tuesday there were 123 total active COVID-19 cases in the county, up 18 from Monday.&nbsp; Four people were hospitalized.&nbsp;

During the pandemic there have been 158 Delta variant cases and 20 breakthrough cases.

The Health Department numbers do not include any from Fort Riley.

TOPEKA — The Kansas State 
University football team will wear a special decal on their helmets 
during the Jan. 4 bowl game to express empathy for people who suffered 
losses from wildfires that scorched more than 400,000 acres in central 
Kansas.

The Wildcats are scheduled to play Louisiana State University in the TaxAct Texas Bowl at NRG Stadium in Houston.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the many Kansans who were affected
 by the recent storms and wildfires,” said Gene Taylor, director of 
athletics at Kansas State in Manhattan. “This helmet sticker is a small 
department-wide gesture that will let all K-Staters and those effected 
by this storm know that we are with them as they rebuild their lives and
 their livelihoods.”

On Tuesday, K-State officials said the decal would be affixed to the back of players’ helmets.

Winds that topped 100 miles per hour on Dec. 15 spread <a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2021/12/20/ball-of-rolling-fire-and-smoke-wildfires-rip-through-north-central-kansas/">brush fires that destroyed</a> homes, vehicles, barns, equipment and was responsible for killing livestock and pets.

Damage stretched from smaller fires in Finney, Scott and Gove counties and included the four-county fire infiltrating parts of Ellis, Rooks, Russell and Osborne counties.

City Commissioner Ronna Larson was the guest speaker at the December 29 Celebration of Optimist Gathering. Ronna told the group that she grew up in a rural Kansas town being the youngest of three children. She graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Criminal Justice and currently works at Community Corrections in Junction City as a Probation Officer.

Ronna also told the group that her interest in history and city government was one of the reasons for campaigning for a seat on the Junction City Commission. She was first elected for a two-year term and was recently elected to a four-year term. “I have no agenda. I just want to understand more about city government and serve the citizens who elected me”, she stated. Larson believes the city is making progress on debt reduction and she is encouraged by the positivity of the Downtown Mainstreet project and their collaboration with other groups in town. She added that “It takes all of us coming together to voice our opinions and then move forward.”

There was a question from an Optimist Club member about her position on the proposed slaughterhouse. Ronna said that she has not formed an opinion yet. She did attend the recent meeting about the issue at the Geary County 4-H/Senior Center, but felt the presentation was more one sided and she hopes there will be another meeting so she and others can have a more thorough understanding about the proposal. “Economic development is important, but there needs to be the right fit with our community”.

Another topic brought up by an Optimist member was about her position on Sundown Salute and the plans to have simultaneous celebrations in Junction City and in Milford. The Commissioner stated that she “hopes the two groups will work together, however, she will support both.”

Just after 2p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for theft in the 300 block of Tuttle Creek Blvd. in Manhattan, according to the RCPD activity report.

Best Buy reported three unknown suspects, 2 men and a woman, stole multiple Apple iPhones. The devices were demonstration models and according to a store&nbsp; source, store employees were dealing with another incident when the suspects snapped the iPhones directly from the Apple display at the back of the store and tried to make a hasty, inconspicuous exit.&nbsp;The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $4,600. 

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Skies will clear out again on Sunday with high temperatures reaching the upper 20s and mid 30s.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Theresa Bramlage, Chair of the Hospital Board of Trustees, explained issues with workforce are being experienced nationwide in multiple industries. "Unfortunately healthcare is one them, and so we have staff shortages. And so what we are looking at is just shifting nursing staff from one clinic that might not be as busy, it's just basic management to another clinic that's producing more." Final action on that possibility has not occurred.

Other topics were covered during the Board meeting:

--There were notes of approval for the work done by Emergency Management, Fire / EMS and hospital staff during the recent water crisis.

--In November GCH had 60 admissions and about $1.7 million in inpatient revenue. Both numbers were the lowest in some time at the hospital.

--The Omicron variant of COVID-19 is not believed to cause as much sickness as earlier forms of the virus but is highly contagious.

--You can still get COVID-19 vaccines in Alpha Care at GCH.

--The recent Holiday Glitz was attended by 185 people and as of now has raised $60,158.45. The event supports Geary Community Healthcare Foundation activities.

GCH releases latest COVID-19 test count

MORRIS CO., Kan. (WIBW) - A Junction City man is behind bars in Morris Co. after he lead law enforcement on a brief car chase the day after Christmas.

Around 10:20 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 26, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.morriscountyks.org/sheriffs-office" target="_blank">Morris Co. Sheriff’s Office</a>&nbsp;said a deputy attempted to stop a 2003, tan-colored, Buick LeSabre on K-4 at H Ave. near White City.

Deputies said the driver, later identified as Brandon M. Rosian, 35, of Junction City, failed to stop, which started a police chase.

Eventually, Rosian stopped at a home near 2200 Rd. and F Ave. where he was taken into custody just before 10:30 p.m. He was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the stop.

Rosian was booked into the Morris Co. Jail on a felony warrant out of Geary Co. for a probation violation on a burglary charge, as well as for interference with law enforcement officers and fleeing or attempt to elude law enforcement officers.

The Sheriff’s Office said the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cityofcouncilgrove.com/police-department" target="_blank">Council Grove Police Department</a>&nbsp;helped in the chase.

Junction City man is arrested in Morris County after brief chase

The Geary County CVB has welcomed its newest staff member, Kate Williamson. She will be working for the CVB as the Marketing Specialist. 

Williamson moved to Kansas in 2020 from Hawaii. Along with her passion for travel and energy, she brings a blend of prior work experience. Williamson has experience working in the Tourism Industry as a Tour Guide for the USS Missouri and the Pacific Aviation Museum. In addition to working in the tourism industry, she worked most of her adult life in the media industry, which can bring a special brand of creativity to the CVB marketing team.

“When one door closes, another opens,” She said “it’s very clear that this is where I am meant to be. I started my career in Tourism. I grew as a professional woman while working for the Media industry. And I’m excited to grow as a professional while working in the Tourism Marketing Industry.

CVB hires new marketing specialist

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged criminal damage to property in Manhattan.

Just after 9a.m. Monday, officers filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 2000 block of Parkway Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 31-year-old man reported a 40-year-old male suspect poured oil into his truck's gas tank. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $945.
