Geary County Commissioners have decided to pull back on funding for the Fresh Start Emergency Shelter, 136 W. Third Street.&nbsp; Alex Tyson, Commission Chair said that right now the Shelter is going through transitions that commissioners do not feel is beneficial to the county. "They've lost two board members, the Shelter hasn't been open for seven months, we haven't gotten any of the questions answered that we outlined during the budget sessions last year. "Tyson added that county officials are still "kind of left in the dark what's happening there. "

&nbsp;So&nbsp; far, Fresh Start officials have not yet been reached for comment.&nbsp;JC Post has been informed that members of the Shelter's board will meet on Tuesday.

Isn’t It Early for this Hot Weather?

With most of this week forecast to be in the 90s in the Junction City area, many local residents are wondering if this isn’t just a little bit early for this kind of weather. Average daily highs for May should be in the 70s and overnight lows in the 50s. In fact, the average daily highs for this week are just about where our lows are forecasted to be! So yes, it is above average, but it is not unheard of.

The earliest we have ever had a reading of 90 degrees or above was March 29, 1967 when the temperature did hit 90 degrees. Roughly 2/3 of the daily high records for the month of April are 90 or above and most of the daily record high temperatures in May are 90 or above. The record highs for this week are: 9th: 97 in 2011, 10th: 92 in 1963, 11th: 97 in 2000, 12th: 97 in 1956 and 13th: 89 in 2001. Given the most recent forecast (early afternoon on Monday) from the National Weather Service, we may not break any of those records.

If you are wondering how long it has been since we’ve had temperatures of 90 or above, well it’s been about seven months. On October 10th we hit 91 degrees; that was 211 days ago. County Extension Agent tackles the hot weather

Geary County Commissioner Trish Giordano is announcing her intention to file to continue serving as the Geary County Commissioner for District 1.

"For the past 16 months, I have proudly served this community. It has been both challenging and rewarding. My platform in the last election included better transparency, hiring a financial officer, and addressing the issues with our county hospital. Along with the other county commissioners, I have worked hard to get these issues addressed. We currently have a detailed agenda, so the public is aware which topics will be voted on at each meeting. Public comments are allowed at the beginning of each meeting, and meetings are recorded and uploaded so the public can watch at their convenience.

A financial officer was hired a few weeks ago. Tami Robison has jumped right in, digging into the budget, and assisting department heads in preparation for their 2023 budgets. With the assistance of department heads, I would like her to create a capital improvement plan, an equipment improvement plan, as well as a consistent and updated pay plan for our employees. I will report on her progress and recommended changes.

We recently signed a Letter of Intent with Stormont Vail to take over healthcare in our community. This will be a complicated and sensitive process, with the goal of ensuring Geary County has sufficient and quality healthcare.

Our taxes rank as one of the highest in the state of Kansas. We need to take action to get this under control and be held accountable to the taxpayers on how their money is being spent.

I take my position of serving our community seriously. This past year I created a Mental Health Taskforce involving GCH, Pawnee Mental Health, Law Enforcement, and Community Corrections. Having all these organizations represented at the table is key to keeping the lines of communication open. In this way, we can better provide service to our affected population, as well as gain greater efficiency between all agencies.

I am currently working with other community shareholders to start a childcare taskforce. At this time, only 24% of childcare needs are being met in Geary County. This is not just an issue for parents, but an economic development issue, and should be addressed as such. "

Giordano will run for office as an independent candidate. She is currently in her second year on the county commission.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities are investigating theft from a home in Manhattan.

Just after 12:30p.m. Friday, officers filed a report for theft in the 2100 block of Browning Avenue.

A 50-year-old man reported a known woman and a 17-year-old boy stole $2,040 cash and a Rock Island .45 caliber handgun. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $3,240. 

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Wait, don’t stop reading because what I have to say is especially important and will affect your farm and ranch for a long time to come. I know we are all tired of the constant fighting and mudslinging and what happens in D.C. and Topeka seem to be millions of miles away. I am here to tell you what happens in both cities hits close to home. Over and over, I hear about how good people have turned off politics and just do not participate anymore. Friends, we have to change that. I am begging, no I am pleading, with all of you to get involved in this next election cycle and help make Kansas Farm Bureau’s voice stronger. Voters Organized To Elect Farm Bureau Friends (VOTE FBF) has a great record when it comes to endorsing candidates, but this is no time to get complacent. We must make our voice heard. VOTE FBF’s track record when it comes to endorsing candidates is so strong because we involve, or try to involve, every county and every member in the process. I know I sound like a broken record, but our strength is our grassroots. This is the time of the year when VOTE FBF starts to make decisions on which candidates to endorse in both our federal and state elections. The very core of the process is the recommendations from each county. It is important, especially in state races, because you know your candidates, your voice and opinions carry great weight with the VOTE FBF board. It’s true, you need to have at least donated $5to VOTE FBF, but that is a small price to have a say in who makes the rules and laws that affect our livelihoods. We need to make sure we are surfacing and supporting legislators who understand and back agriculture. The only way things will get better is if we are involved, and that has to start now. First, familiarize yourself with the candidates in your area. Read their websites and go meet them. Find out who supports your way of life and who will represent your point of view in D.C. and Topeka. Then go to your county office, pay your $5 if you haven’t already and ask to be part of the process. I will bet you won’t be turned down. RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating&nbsp; criminal damage to property in the 1200 block of Bluemont Scenic Drive in Manhattan.

Just after 2:30p.m. p.m. Friday,&nbsp; the City of Manhattan reported a rock retaining wall at the Bluemont Scenic Overlook was spray painted.

In 2019, the RCPD also reported vandalism at the overlook.

The estimated total loss associated with Friday's case is approximately $500.

RILEY COUNTY —A Riley County man was injured in an accident just after 8a.m. Saturday in Riley County.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2007 Chevy Impala driven by Marion Mzouch, 63, Randolph, was westbound in the 13000 block of Fancy Creek Road.

The awards include the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Awards for excellence in leadership and scholarship. The Outstanding Future Teacher Award is presented to one new elementary education graduate and one new secondary education graduate for their potential as future teachers. The award winners are all May 2022 bachelor's candidates from the college:

&nbsp; Jordan Dombrowski, secondary education-English,&nbsp;Junction City, Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award. Dombrowski is a member of the University Honors Program and multiple recipient of K-State semester honors. She is receiving a dual degree in English literature. Dombrowski was a member of the College of Education Ambassadors, serving as Education Experience Day chair. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and served as chapter president and vice president of finance. She also was a member of the Kansas National Education Association Aspiring Educators, serving as literacy outreach chair and secondary education representative. Junction City student recognized by the KSU College of Education

Gusty winds blew the box off of an empty semi box trailer on I-70 approximately nine miles east of Junction City Sunday morning, According to the Geary County Sheriff's Department, James Carr, Independence, MO, was east bound on the interstate in a Kenworth semi-truck pulling the trailer when the winds blew the box off, causing it to land in the roadway and slide into the center median. That, in turn, threw debris into the west bound lanes and strike a Toyota four-runner driven by Charles Drum, Denver, CO. 

No injuries were reported. The accident was reported at 10:47 a.m.

Junction City leaders have been informed that the demolition of the East 6th Street Viaduct Bridge over Monroe Street and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks is slated to begin on or about July 13. City Manager Allen Dinkel provided the information. "KDOT is handling, that because Department of Transportation, because that is a highway route, Highway 57. "

USD 475 has been looking at creation of a grades 6-12 alternative program at the H.D. Karns Building. Students with behavior and discipline challenges at both Junction City High School and Junction City Middle School could be sent there. There was conversation at the recent Board of Education meeting and there was approval from the Board to beef up the staff with an assistant principal and four more core teachers.&nbsp;

But USD 475Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Eggleston makes it clear that there are good students at the Karns Building. "What we're trying to do is utilize that facility for as many alternative programs as we possibly can." I think the conversation surrounded some of the students that we have experienced some behavior problems with this past year, and so we have an alternative program for those students to help them return back to the school." 

Eggleston added that the ultimate goal is to help all of the district's students be successful. "So I don't want people to feel like we have nothing but criminals over there because that's not the case. We just have some students who have been misguided, misdirected, and we need to assist them with getting back on track so that they can be productive citizens." Eggleston added that's the goal that District officials have in mind.

One of the positive alternatives at the Karns Building is the Magnet Program. Eggleston said that program is "strictly for students who want assistance or enrichment when it comes to their academics. " The superintendent added the purpose of that program is to help students make preparations for ninth grade. "We want to do everything that we can to help students be prepared academically, emotionally so that they're ready to take on the rigors of a high school curriculum, as well as be ready to make good decisions when they're in a large environment." On Saturday afternoon, authorities alerted the public to&nbsp;an increased police presence in the area of 6th and Lincoln in St. George, according to a social media report.

This is the result of a pursuit that ended at that location where the subjects fled after wrecking the stolen vehicle they were driving.

One suspect was in custody and police were looking for the driver until they called off the search just before 4p.m.

Police described him as a white male, approximately 6 feet tall, wearing blue jeans, a white shirt, brown hair, and a ponytail. If you see this subject please call 911.

County Commission sets the agenda

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Army must put more money and effort into repairing poorly maintained and substandard base housing for military service members and their families, U.S. senators demanded Thursday, amid persistent reports that mold and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/467004ec107a4694ba211c1777efbd2c">other issues threaten troops' health</a>.

One after another, members of the Senate Armed Services Committee pressed top Army leaders during a hearing to spend money on military housing in their states.

“We have all heard the horror stories of substandard on base housing, military families across the country, living with black mold and collapsed ceilings and electrical and fire hazards and a lot of other substandard conditions,” said Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. “We need to fix our shameful military housing problem, and we need to do it as quickly as possible.”

Army Secretary Christine Wormuth repeatedly told senators that housing is a priority, but that it competes for funding in the Army and defense budgets with other key needs, including equipment and weapons modernization and training. She said that due to the Army's vast size, it's impossible to get to all the problems in one year.

The Army, she said, is requesting nearly $2 billion for military housing in the 2023 proposed budget, and has a 10-year infrastructure plan. That plan would have the Army invest $27 billion in infrastructure over the next decade.

“We have a very large footprint with a large number of bases. All of them have housing. And I would love nothing more than to be able to renovate all of the housing around the country that needs to be renovated in a single year. But we are not able to do that,” she said.

The housing focus comes on the heels of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-announces-global-resolution-criminal-and-civil-investigations-privatized">a massive fraud case involving one of the largest providers</a>&nbsp;of military housing in the United States. Balfour Beatty Communities LLC, which oversees about 1,700 homes at bases in Georgia and Texas, faced widespread claims of negligence and failure to do repairs. The company pleaded guilty in December to committing fraud against the United States from 2013 to 2019, was ordered to pay $65.4 million in fines and restitution and was placed under an independent compliance monitor for three years.

A Senate panel earlier this year found that the company continues to respond inadequately to mold and other structural problems.

Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., criticized Army leaders for not addressing problems at Fort Leonard Wood, saying he's been given conflicting reports on what, if any, housing replacements would be funded at the base in his state.

“I was told last year there were $341 million that were going to be allocated towards replacing housing. Then I was told later only $50 million would be available to Fort Leonard Wood. And then I was told after that it would be zero,” Hawley told Wormuth during the hearing. “You can imagine I’m not very happy about it.”

Wormuth promised to nail down the correct answer, but again warned that repair money for the base may not be in the budget for fiscal year beginning Oct. 1.

“We try to look where the need is most pressing and sort of develop a schedule,” she said. “But I’d be happy to look into it. And I understand that you’re frustrated hearing different things at different times.”

Officials noted that the Army submitted a separate request to Congress that outlined projects that aren't funded in the budget that would also be priorities, and thy include an additional $330 million for housing issues.

That additional money, said Warren, should be included in the Army's base budget, if, indeed, housing is a priority as leaders say. And she questioned why the $1.9 billion total for housing in the main budget request is 40% smaller than the current budget would provide.

According to the Army, the $1.9 billion budget request is actually a 12% increase over last year's request. Congress, however, voted to add nearly $1.5 billion in military construction funds to that request, resulting in a total of more than $3.2 billion for the year. Congress has not yet acted on the proposed budget, so has not added funds.

Gen. James McConville, the chief of staff of the Army, told senators the Army is doing all it can to ensure quality housing and other services for troops. “When our soldiers get the call that it’s time to deploy, we want them laser focused on their mission, knowing that their families will be well taken care of at home,” McConville said.

Youngers also noted that work has begun at Rathert Field to clean up the Beer Garden for&nbsp; the upcoming Brigade baseball season. That will include replacement of boards, and a coat of stain to protect the decking.

Operation Veteran Connection is recommended for all Veterans, active military members near their separation date, family members, and the public interested in obtaining information about state and federal Veteran benefits, and how to apply for them. 

Accredited Veteran Service Representatives will be on site to assist individuals with all types of disability and pension claims. Federal VA personnel will be available to assist with applying for healthcare benefits and/or check the status of an existing claim. These professionals will also provide readjustment counseling and Veteran Readiness and Employment services.

Several state government agencies, Veteran Service Organizations, and Non-Profits will meet with Veterans to offer comprehensive assessment of education, skills, and abilities. These same agencies will provide in–depth interviewing and evaluation to identify employment barriers, discuss appropriate employment and career goals, and share information on many other state Veteran benefits. 

Attendees are strongly encouraged to bring discharge paperwork (DD-214) or claim file number, marriage certificate, and available medical records to help simplify the application for benefits.

On the first day of the event at 5:00 p.m.&nbsp; a free cookout style dinner will be served for all in attendance. Dinner will be followed by an open forum town hall event at 6:00 p.m.

&nbsp; MANHATTAN — Brian Jordan, executive&nbsp;director of the Kansas Association of School Boards, is the 2022 recipient of the&nbsp;Dan and Cheryl Yunk Award for Excellence in Educational Administration from the Kansas State University&nbsp;<a href="https://coe.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Education</a>. The award is given annually to an individual who has demonstrated exemplary leadership in providing or promoting the administration of P-12 schools in Kansas. The award is named in honor of the Yunks, who were exemplary teachers and administrators throughout their careers with Manhattan-Ogden USD 383. Dan Yunk served as superintendent of the school district for nearly 20 years. Jordan will be presented with the award at the College of Education's commencement ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, in Bramlage Coliseum on K-State's Manhattan campus. He will also serve as commencement speaker.&nbsp;&nbsp;

There are 6.4 million head of cattle in Kansas. That was one of the facts presented to approximately 600 third grade students from USD 475 during Ag Day at the Geary County 4-H fairgrounds on Friday. They learned about topics ranging from livestock to wheat.

Ginger Kopfer, 4-H Extension Agent noted that the students are learning where their food comes from. "So we're learning about cattle and pigs, sheep and goats. There was also education about corn, soybeans and wheat.

Kopfer thought the students really enjoyed seeing the animals. "So being able to see a pig in person which they may have never done, particularly maybe sheep and goats that they've never seen either."

The Ag Day programs are taught by 4-H members and Extension Educational Unit members from Geary County.

Members of a Junction City High School marketing class paid a visit to the 107.9 / 1420 KJCK AM studios this week to record ads for use on the air promoting upcoming JCHS events. During their visit they were able to learn about production of the ads and marketing.

The students are members of a class taught by Christina Amerin.

"Raise the Roof" Fitness Fair on May 21st from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. will raise funds to help pay for a new roof on the Geary County Historical Museum. Local gyms will be offering hour long classes on the Museum grounds at 530 North Adams.

Heather Hagedorn, Historical Society Executive Director, said the schedule for the event has been finalized.&nbsp;

--12 p.m. martial arts with Elite Academy of Martial Arts

--2 p.m. ballroom dancing focusing on the Charleston with Ballroom Dance School Manhattan.

Children's classes will also be held during the day.&nbsp;

--1 p.m. Clarabel's Dance with Clarabel's

Food vendors will be on site and hourly raffles will be drawn with prizes from local fitness organizations. Wristbands necessary for entry are now on sale at the museum for $15 in advance or $20 day of the event. Children's wrists are $8 in advance or $10 day of the event.&nbsp;

Junction City Sundowners have returned as a Lions Branch Club. Members include Dee Quigley, John and Cortney Lavender, Bryan Berglund, JaeLynn Burton and Frank Catalo.&nbsp;

Frank Catalo will serve as president, Cortney Lavender secretary and Dee Quigley. Date for the first meeting will be the last Wednesday of the month, May 25th at 6 p.m. at La Fiesta.
