The Geary County CVB has welcomed its newest staff member, Kate Williamson. She will be working for the CVB as the Marketing Specialist. 

Williamson moved to Kansas in 2020 from Hawaii. Along with her passion for travel and energy, she brings a blend of prior work experience. Williamson has experience working in the Tourism Industry as a Tour Guide for the USS Missouri and the Pacific Aviation Museum. In addition to working in the tourism industry, she worked most of her adult life in the media industry, which can bring a special brand of creativity to the CVB marketing team.

“When one door closes, another opens,” She said “it’s very clear that this is where I am meant to be. I started my career in Tourism. I grew as a professional woman while working for the Media industry. And I’m excited to grow as a professional while working in the Tourism Marketing Industry.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged criminal damage to property in Manhattan.

Just after 9a.m. Monday, officers filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 2000 block of Parkway Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 31-year-old man reported a 40-year-old male suspect poured oil into his truck's gas tank. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $945.

Program eyes more in-person activities in 2022&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The leader of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H Youth Development</a>&nbsp;program praised the efforts of the volunteers, professionals, youth and families across the state in getting some parts of the organization back to near-normal operations in 2021.&nbsp;

But Wade Weber said the coming year promises to be even better as the state’s largest youth organization eyes more in-person activities.&nbsp;

“As I look back on 2021, I think of the many ways in which young people, volunteers and professionals re-purposed to do their best,” he said. “At the end of the day, what we saw was that these people showed the resiliency that really has become a hallmark of Kansas 4-H – and will continue to be as we move forward.”&nbsp;

Weber pointed to a couple events – the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson, and the Kansas Youth Leadership Forum at Rock Springs Ranch – as examples of how 4-H managed to safely hold in-person events and provide youth opportunities for growth.&nbsp;

“These were opportunities to engage young people and help them be in that creative process of youth-adult partnerships,” Weber said.&nbsp;

He added that the new year already shows promise for continuing in-person activities. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/events-activities/conferences-events/horse/horse-panorama.html" target="_blank">4-H Horse Panorama</a>&nbsp;is scheduled for Jan. 28-30 in Hutchinson, and the 4-H dog project will be holding&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/events-activities/trainings/dog-leader/index.html" target="_blank">judges training and certification training</a>&nbsp;Jan. 28-30 in Wichita.&nbsp;

In February, Weber said, 4-H will host&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/events-activities/conferences-events/citizenship-in-action/index.html" target="_blank">Citizenship in Action</a>&nbsp;at the Kansas State Capitol during the weekend of President’s Day (Feb. 20-21), and Kansas has been approved to send a delegation to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/events-activities/conferences-events/citizenship-washington-focus/index.html" target="_blank">Citizenship Washington Focus</a>&nbsp;in Washington, D.C. during the first full week of June (the deadline to register is Jan. 15).&nbsp;

Kansas 4-H charges into new year 

Geary County had the top ranking in Kansas when it comes to COVID-19 vaccinations with a rate of 81%. The county ranked 15th in the state in COVID-19 cases.

The information was provided to the county commission Monday by Interim Health Department Administrator Charles Martinez. There were 90 active COVID-19 cases while one person was hospitalized. There had been 158 Delta variant cases but there had not been any Omicron cases.

The anticipated situation includes an increase at the beginning of January but then a rapid drop. The increase should not exceed the capacity of the hospital or health department.

Ascher said "I am stating my opposition to such a proposal. This is not the right industry or fit for our community or our demographics. My responsibility is to the citizens of the whole of Geary County. "

There has been public concern about the proposed project in recent days by a number of citizens. City and County leaders have noted that due diligence is being done on the proposal at this time. No final action has been taken.

Organizers noted that this will be the 18th annual Little Apple New Year's Eve. Events will be happening in Aggieville all day long including live music, magicians and balloon artists.

There will be a Roving Fire Act by a one woman stunt show, Martika. At midnight you can watch the little apple drop from the top of Kite's Bar and Grill.

Two members of the public Robin Moelhagen and James Kelly, voiced their displeasure with a proposed slaughterhouse project to the Geary County Commission Monday morning.

Moelhagen spoke first ."I don't know how many of you have been around feedlots or cattle yards or processing plants but when they get wet it stinks to high heaven. " Moelhagen added. "I realize that there are people that there are people in higher ups that don't care about our towns and our counties but since I am a resident and I'm not that far away from a proposal site I DO NOT WANT IT.

Kelly noted that he had lived in the area near the proposed location for 30 years. "And I have to smell that? "&nbsp;

Commission Chair Trish Giordano made it clear nothing is set in stone and as of last week no land had been purchased. Commissioner Alex Tyson noted that it is the job of the members of the governing body to encourage their city partners to do due diligence and also added that he didn't want "some stinky plant to come into our community." Commissioner Keith Ascher said he was not in favor of the proposal, and noted that different industry can be found that would be more conducive.

City and Chamber of Commerce officials have made it clear that they doing their due diligence on the project. Final action has not occurred.

MANHATTAN—One man was injured during a reported altercation involving fishing poles on Christmas Eve in Manhattan.

Just after 10:30a.m. Friday, officers filed a report for aggravated battery, criminal damage to property and criminal trespass in the 200 block of N. 11th Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 40 and 42-year-old men reported 40- and 42-year-old suspects were in an altercation with them after three fishing poles were damaged. 

When the 42-year-old left in his car, the 40-year-old jumped on the hood of the car and was eventually thrown off causing injuries to his ankles and head. 

EMS transported the 40-year-old to Via Christi for treatment of his injuries. 

Police arrested Daniel Westgate, 40, of Manhattan on requested charges of criminal trespass and he remains in the Riley County Jail on a total bond of $2,000 after being released from Via Christi.

Amid the hustle and bustle of this season, I have recently been reminded that, contrary to the temperatures outside, it is winter. As if the short daylight hours, the Christmas stockings and kids being out for winter break haven’t clued me in on this time of the year, a tiny reminder has made it abundantly clear it is indeed winter. The reminder began last week when I was sitting and enjoying my breakfast tea at the kitchen table in silence. It’s a rare occurrence during this time of the year when I am able to sit in solitude and enjoy my warm morning drink. However, on this particular day while everyone was out of the house and I was writing down my list of to-dos, I realized I was not alone. As I’d scribble another item on my list, a little rustling sound would follow. I stopped a couple of times to determine where the sound was coming from.&nbsp; Perhaps a branch was scratching a window, or a toy had not been turned off. When I stopped my list-making and got up to investigate, the noise stopped. I returned to my list and warm cup of tea to continue my task, and the noise began again. Perhaps the caffeine finally kicked in and I was fully aware of the situation because it was then I realized the rustling was in the cabinet under my kitchen sink. I sprang up from my chair to open the cabinet door just in time to catch a little gray mouse scurrying away. Yes, this is my annual reminder winter is truly here. Over the next few days, I began my attempt to rid my house of this tiny mouse. Peanut butter cups were purchased and traps were strategically placed. I wanted to get this creature “taken care of” sooner rather than later as I firmly believe that even if you see only one, there are definitely more. My senses have become acutely more aware of the presence of this little creature in my house. The sounds at midnight of tiny feet skittering across a wooden floor under the cover of darkness, an empty snapped trap minus its appealing bait, and the discovery of a collection of individually wrapped dishwasher tablets relocated from their proper place are all evidence of a mouse. As I discover more proof of this animal in my home, I have become obsessively determined to catch it. This determination has become an annual event for me in our farmhouse. Every year at this time I try to outwit pests that have opted to move into my home instead of claiming the many outbuildings and barns as their winter retreats.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Every year at this time I declare I will catch that mouse! Every year at this time I wake up and immediately wonder if I have caught anything overnight. And every year, I am caught off guard by the determined actions of a tiny creature who, like clockwork, knows when winter is here. Yes, even if it doesn't seem like winter to us yet, my tiny reminder assures me that winter has most definitely arrived.&nbsp;&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State University farm analyst LaVell Winsor is hailing a program in the Department of Agricultural Economics that has a long history of helping farm families review their finances and make a financial plan.&nbsp;

The university’s&nbsp;<a href="https://agmanager.info/programs/ksu-farm-analyst-program" target="_blank">Farm Analyst</a>&nbsp;program offers one-on-one consultation, using active farmers, ranchers and extension agents who are trained as K-State Research and Extension analysts. The program has provided assistance to more than 1,000 farm families. &nbsp;“A lot of people will work with us now, when it's better times financially, and we help them with their budgets to try to figure out how they're going to manage (long term),” Winsor said. &nbsp;

Some families, she added, work with a farm analyst annually while others only consult with an analyst when they are looking at an expansion, experiencing a financial difficulty, or making a major change.&nbsp;

“We'll go out to the farm and work with the family for the day, going through all of their finances,” Winsor said. “This is available to farmers across Kansas or anybody who has a land ownership interest in Kansas.”&nbsp;

Analysts use a financial tool called FinPack to build a full financial analysis of the operation. “We can look at alternatives side by side and try to consider every aspect of a change someone might be looking at making,” Winsor said.&nbsp;

A common scenario is exploring land purchases. According to Winsor, analysts can help analyze a land purchase by taking into consideration the loan, property taxes, acres, and the likely revenue and expenses associated with the purchase. &nbsp;

“It is really important that the producers we work with provide us with the best information that they have,” Winsor said. “Then, we can put together something that can be a tool to make decisions.” &nbsp;

C.L. Hoover Opera House Co-Directors Joe and Sheila Markley have provided information on the status of the Opera House expansion project, noting that an adjacent building at 131 West 7th Street has been purchased.&nbsp;

A feasibility study has been completed and fundraising is under way. The estimated cost of renovation is $1.75 million, and already more than $750,000 in pledges have been received.&nbsp;

In addition providing more room for growing youth education programs the new building will offer other benefits including a dedicated art studio, Junction City Little Theater and Junction City Arts Council street front office space. A new mini art gallery will be created. Two rehearsal /event spaces will be created, and the facades of the Rolfs Building an 131 West 7th Street will be restored.

The new building will allow creation of dressing rooms closer to the stage. This, in turn, will allow creation of a larger catering kitchen. The present kitchen would become a dedicated “Green Room” for actors and precentors waiting to go on stage.

Funding is being sought from foundations, state grants, businesses, and individuals. Henry, Ogden, Trooper and Four Corners access control points will remain open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through the holidays. Grant and Parker gates will be closed Dec. 23 – 26 and Dec. 30 – Jan. 2. The commercial traffic gate at 12th street will be closed Dec. 24 – 26 and Dec. 31 – Jan. 2. When the 12th street access control point is closed, commercial traffic will use the Henry gate.

Work on Blue Jay Way was a key road project in 2021 near the new Junction City High School. That's the one mile stretch of roadway connecting K-18 Highway with Rucker Road.

Ray Ibarra, Junction City Public Works Director Ray Ibarra said it's a little bit short of K-18 right now because of a roundabout project there. "They have poured the north side of the roundabout and they're looking to do the south side. This winter they will not do anything to K-18 due to the traffic sequencing which will take some traffic signals so they do not want to do that during the winter due to the snow."

Blue Jay Way is the primary route right now leading to the entrance way into the new high school.

“We are seeing blood levels at historically low levels this time of year,” said Matthew Trotter, with The American Red Cross. “It’s been about a decade since we’ve seen blood donations coming in like they are right now.”

The American Red Cross says the nation is facing an extreme blood supply shortage.

Some blood centers across the nation are reporting that they have less than a one-day supply of blood.

There will be a free Christmas meal at a residence at 13th &amp; Jackson starting at 1 p.m. Friday, Christmas Eve, and continuing until all of the food is gone. It's a project being undertaken by Ronald Gayle with the assistance of James Lusk, both of Junction City.

Gayle has been a resident of the city for about 30 years and has operated businesses ranging from audio shops to food trucks. "The city has been great to me. I just figured this time around it's time to give back." The memory of his mother, who passed away this past year is a motivating factor. "She would take whatever she had and also give back to the community. That's probably the biggest motivator there, that I want to do the same thing that she would have done this year."

The menu will include ham, stuffing, green beans, cranberry sauce and a small dessert. Tables will be set up and there will be signs to alert the public to the location.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, KS - December 23, 2021)&nbsp;Beginning Monday, December 27, all visitors and&nbsp;city&nbsp;staff will be required to wear a mask that covers their mouth and nose when indoors at all City of Manhattan-operated facilities, according to a media release from the city.

The requirement applies to people older than two years of age, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated. The decision to reinstate a mask requirement indoors at City facilities was made by City Manager Ron Fehr in response to CDC and Riley County Health Department (RCHD) recommendations.  &nbsp; “The Omicron variant is surging across the country as well as being more prevalent in Kansas, which is&nbsp;putting a strain on local hospitals and medical providers,"&nbsp;said City Manager Ron Fehr. “Holiday gatherings and upcoming News Years events are likely to lead to even more spread. Recently,&nbsp;it was necessary to close the Animal Shelter due to COVID-19 exposure and an&nbsp;inability to have enough employees to keep the facility open to the public. Thus, we need to do what we can to reduce the spread, make sure the City workforce can continue to provide essential services, keep our public facilities open, and help prevent the local medical community from being overwhelmed. I encourage community members to get vaccinated if they haven't already, and receive a booster if eligible.” &nbsp; This mask requirement is related to indoor, City-operated facilities only. There is no&nbsp;City-wide mask ordinance that has been approved or&nbsp;is&nbsp;being considered at this time.   &nbsp; Indoor City facilities include but are not limited to: &nbsp;

Manhattan Regional Airport&nbsp;will continue to&nbsp;follow federal laws&nbsp;requiring masks for all people at airports. Due to the recent windstorm on December 15th, the Junction City Department of Public Works will pick-up the trees/tree limbs from the storm damage. City crews will start on the south end of the City and work towards the north end of town.

Public Works Director Ray Ibarra said citizens are asked that only trees/tree limbs be placed along the curb where City crews will be able to pick up the debris. The tree/tree limb pickup will begin December 27th and end December 30th. If any trash is mixed with the trees/tree limbs the debris will not be picked up due to the restrictions placed by KDHE on the County’s tree landfill.
