MANHATTAN – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District have announced an upcoming construction project to repair the rock overlay on portions of the upstream side of the Tuttle Creek Dam.&nbsp;

During 2019, portions of the existing rock overlay were degraded due to the extended duration of high water and wave action. This project will restore the more damaged portions of rock on the dam. This is the initial phase of repairs with additional work planned as future project funds allow.

Work is expected to begin on or about Tuesday and will require closure of public access, including the east and west dam parking lots and the entire upstream face of the dam. These closures include all pedestrian and bank fishing.&nbsp;

The project will span several months&nbsp; with no anticipated road closures. This initial phase is expected to be complete in early 2022.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 GMC SUV driven by&nbsp; Audra D.&nbsp;Berquist, 24, WaKeeney, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of the Yocemento Exit.

The SUV rear-ended a 2015 Nissan Sentra driven by Renee L. Rhodes, 40,&nbsp; Junction City, who was traveling at a slow rate of speed with its flashers on due to a flat tire earlier in the day and driving on a donut.

EMS transported an 11-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy to Hays Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. The KHP did not report where the children were from.

Berquist, Rhodes and an adult passenger in the Nissan were not injured. All Five were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.&nbsp;

2 children traveling with Junction City woman injured in crash

Members of the Wichita Horseless Carriage Club regional group are spending the weekend visiting five communities in the east central Kansas region. According to Austin Anders, Club spokesman, the participants are headquartered for the weekend at the Hampton Inn in Junction City.

Their schedule called for visits to Junction City and Wakefield on Friday, Manhattan Saturday, a trip to Alta Vista and back through the Flint Hills on Sunday, and a visit to Chapman for the car show during the Labor Day celebration on Monday.

Anders said some of the cars range anywhere from a 1914 Cadillac up to a 1939 Studebaker. "Mostly Model T's, Model A's. " There was a green 1929 Model A that's been in Ander' family for many years, "with straw yellow wheels and a straw yellow pinstripe. " The car has a mohair interior. Anders noted the vehicle is priceless to his family.&nbsp;

Anders said top speed for a Model A is claimed at about 70 miles per hour. 'We normally tour comfortably at around 30. That's what most of these tours are based around, a 30 mile per hour speed limit."

The tour stopped at the Geary County Historical Museum on Friday morning.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Kansas Dept. of Transportation is reminding everyone to drink responsibly over Labor Day weekend after new statistics on drunk driving were released.

On Labor Day weekend in 2019, authorities say 38% of fatalities in the nation were drunk driving related. Figures also show the presence of marijuana nearly doubled in drivers killed in car crashes in 2009 and 2018.

KDOT officials say, if you plan to drink or take marijuana, have a designated, sober driver to take you home or stay home for the evening.

The K-State campus community will have the chance to view "September 11, 2001: The Day that Changed the World" exhibit at Hale Library on display now until Sept. 15.

According to K-State Today, the exhibit, which commemorates the 20th&nbsp;anniversary of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, will be available for viewing on the first floor of Hale Library near the sunflower entrance.

This educational exhibit recounts the events of Sept. 11, 2001, through the personal stories of those who witnessed and survived the attacks. Told across 14 posters, this exhibition includes archival photographs and images of artifacts from the 9/11 Memorial and Museum's permanent collection.

Just before 2a.m. Friday, Officers filed a report for theft in the 3300 block of Valleydale Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Dept. activity report.

A 30-year-old man reported an unknown suspect stole his black 2014 Acura MDX.

Fort Riley officials have announced that a construction project will temporarily close the Parker Access Control Point, formerly known as the Estes Gate, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday. The construction project should be complete by the end of November.

All other Fort Riley access control points remain open according to their normal operating schedules. Construction continues on Henry Drive with traffic through the Henry Access Control Point reduced to one lane inbound and one lane outbound as of Aug. 31. Drivers of oversized vehicles or those towing trailers are advised to exit the installation through other access control points. Contractors expect to reopen two inbound lanes and one outbound at the Henry access control point by Nov. 1. Henry Drive should also reopen by Nov 1.

In addition to ongoing road construction, Fort Riley has updated the system for visitor passes. Visitors to Fort Riley can now apply online for a single day visitor’s pass. Lisa Shappee, director of instructional design and faculty support, is the recipient of the 2021 Wagner Award for Outstanding Instructional Support from Kansas State University Salina. The Wagner Award recognizes an outstanding individual in distance learning administration innovation, excellent instructional support and leadership. "Lisa demonstrates outstanding instructional support in the way she interacts with her colleagues, through her continuous exploration of new ideas, and by her dedication to the discipline of instructional design in higher education," said Kirsten Zoller, director of K-State Salina professional education and outreach. "Lisa's talent for understanding those she is working with, her commitment to quality work, and her practical approach to challenges to get to the best solution for all shows that she is an exceptional instructional design professional." Shappee has been at K-State Salina for 10 years. Before her current role, she worked as the library director/instructional designer and served as the director of library services. She earned Bachelor of Science in journalism from the University of Kansas and master's degrees in library science and instructional design and technology from Emporia State University. She is currently enrolled in the curriculum and instruction doctoral program at K-State. "Staying true to our campus mission, my way to support being student-centered is by making sure that students have a quality learning experience through technology," Shappee said.  </figure>Lisa Shappee, director of instructional design and faculty support, is the recipient of the 2021 Wagner Award for Outstanding Instructional Support from Kansas State University Salina. The Wagner Award recognizes an outstanding individual in distance learning administration innovation, excellent instructional support and leadership. "Lisa demonstrates outstanding instructional support in the way she interacts with her colleagues, through her continuous exploration of new ideas, and by her dedication to the discipline of instructional design in higher education," said Kirsten Zoller, director of K-State Salina professional education and outreach. "Lisa's talent for understanding those she is working with, her commitment to quality work, and her practical approach to challenges to get to the best solution for all shows that she is an exceptional instructional design professional." Shappee has been at K-State Salina for 10 years. Before her current role, she worked as the library director/instructional designer and served as the director of library services. She earned Bachelor of Science in journalism from the University of Kansas and master's degrees in library science and instructional design and technology from Emporia State University. She is currently enrolled in the curriculum and instruction doctoral program at K-State. "Staying true to our campus mission, my way to support being student-centered is by making sure that students have a quality learning experience through technology," Shappee said. "I can do this by being a resource for faculty to make their jobs easier — allowing them more time to focus on teaching." Besides developing technology support for courses at K-State Salina, she successfully implemented a project with the Kansas Department of Transportation's certified inspector training program. The campus has worked with the department for 20 years by providing on-campus training. Shappee made 20 courses into an online format. This endeavor required her to support and edit 200 videos focused on lecture and lab experiences and organized them into learning management systems. K-State Salina's Lisa Shappee receives prestigious Wagner Award

For three hours Wednesday evening Heritage Park in downtown Junction City was full of businesses and organization vendors along with a substantial number of community members enjoying the Junction City Expo. A total of 77 vendors participated in the event.

It was an opportunity to learn what different businesses offer, enjoy food and entertainment, and visit with fellow community members.

Junction City Mayor Jeff Underhill called the turnout fantastic. "I think combining the Business Expo with the Grub and Grooves atmosphere with the bands and food vendors was a brilliant idea by the Chamber staff.

Ashley King, Director of Communications at Geary Community Hospital operated a booth at the Expo. "It's good, a great turnout. It's nice to see everybody back out in the community.

Chamber of Commerce Member Relations Coordinator Dawn Stephens credited the effort to share information ahead of the event, while Chamber President Mickey Fornaro Dean said there was gorgeous weather, and people liked the vendor attendance.

Junction City Expo produces a strong business turnout

There was a bomb threat at Spring&nbsp; Valley Elementary School on the morning of Aug. 11. Fortunately no bomb was ever found, but Junction City police did not arrive on the scene until 30 minutes after what they termed an unsubstantiated bomb threat came in from the school district. They did not respond with a lights and sirens running during morning traffic because they did not want to endanger the community traveling across town.

JC Post has asked Sheriff Dan Jackson for his department's side of the story. He noted there was never a call dispatched out but he was notified from other sources that there was a bomb threat with no police presence at the school. Jackson ordered his day shift to immediately respond and they went to the scene with police responding soon after. The Sheriff noted that when the S-O personnel went to the school they notified dispatch and asked if there was any information about the threat. Police then responded as well.

Multiple searches were also done of the building including some K-9's from other agencies. 

Jackson noted that you hear about an unsubstantiated or substantiated threat. "If a bomb threat gets called in I will treat it as it's substantiated until we unsubstantiate it by getting everybody out of the school, doing a search, bringing in bomb dogs. I don't think we can just say because it came in over social media that we don't have to take it seriously."

Following an earlier police report that a small number of sheriff's personnel had earlier been at the school&nbsp; leaving their children to attend classes, the Sheriff's Department confirmed no Deputies have children attending there.

Police Captain Cory Odell did note that students were not allowed into the school and were kept at a safe distance.&nbsp; Police Chief John Lamb said that police have assessed their policies and there are things that have been identified where changes need to be made. He also stated, "There are some things that we have identified that we can improve on." The chief issued his comments after an after action review of the matter.
