Junction City Main Street is hosting a Diversity &amp; Equality Community Forum on March 8th from 5:15 - 7 p.m. at the C.L. Hoover Opera House. Featured speakers will include Kevin Willmott and Christopher Harris while Ed O'Malley, Executive Director of the Kansas Leadership Center, will serve as facilitator.

Harris is a researcher at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City. He will discuss data and trends that suggest the positive impact on rural areas of entrepreneurship and business and job creation.

Willmott is an Oscar winning, University of Kansas filmmaker and Junction City native. He will focus on the entrepreneurial aspects of filmmaking and the unique challenges of being a minority filmmaker.

Charles ( Chuck ) and Deanna Munson bid $926,000 during a bankruptcy sale in Abilene on Monday to acquire the former Brookville Hotel restaurant property. Pinnacle Bank had put the property up&nbsp; for sale with the Munson's submitting the lone bid. They plan to open a new restaurant called Legacy Kansas, with a subtitle acknowledging both the Brookville Hotel and Munson's Prime.&nbsp;

Charles and Deanna owned the Munson Prime steakhouse in Junction City that was destroyed by fire in February of 2021. They now plan to open the new restaurant with what Deanna termed "the best of both worlds. We will continue the traditional family style served chicken the way it was done at Brookville. " Munson said in at least three of the rooms, there will be a bar with high top tables and the other available rooms will serve menu items including "high-end Munson steaks and also burgers." In that latter area customers will also be able to order a plated Brookville chicken dinner. There are also plans to serve Munson homemade ice cream.

There is work to be done to prepare the facility with the goal of a June 24th, 2022 opening, explained Deanna. "We have a ways to go. First of all it deteriorated in the last year and there are things missing that were there before that are not there now." The work can progress again on remodeling the bar in&nbsp; the building, the ice cream machine has to be remade and a facility must be built to hold that machine.&nbsp;There will need to be some work as well to staff the new restaurant 

The original plan called for the restaurant to be open by June 24th, 2021, but back tax issues facing the previous owners of the Brookville Hotel resulted in a delay and eventually concluded with the sale on Monday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Deanna explained how this project fits their dream. "To do something like this, not to own a restaurant, not to have a steakhouse. " She said they want the farm community. "The Legacy Kansas is perfect for what Chuck ,and especially my dream is, for where we leave Munson Farms when we leave this world. We've got the next generation that as far as our management team that probably are as eager to make it we want it to be as we are, and they're young!"

MANHATTAN —Monday opens the next chapter in university leadership at K-State. The university welcomes new President Richard and First Lady Sally Linton and family to Manhattan.

&nbsp;On December 2, The Kansas Board of Regents selected Richard Linton&nbsp; as the 15th president of K-State. Linton was the dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University. "I am honored to take on the role of president of Kansas State University," Linton said. "The university is on an exciting trajectory, and its community has a contagious passion, culture and connectivity. I'm energized to help K-State forward and build on this positive momentum.” Linton is strongly connected to land-grant institutions, which is one of the reasons why he applied to become the president of K-State. He earned his bachelor's degree in biology, master's degree in food science and doctorate in food science from Virginia Tech. From 1994-2011, he was a food science faculty member, director — and founder — of the Center for Food Safety Engineering and associate director of agricultural research programs at Purdue University. He served as department chair of food science and technology at The Ohio State University from 2011-2012 before accepting his current position with NC State. During his 27-year career, Linton has published over 60 referred journal articles, 11 textbooks, and over 75 Extension publications. He has also presented over 250 invited talks at state, national, and international meetings and has received more than $15 million in research funding. &nbsp;Linton said he plans to spend his first few weeks on campus listening and learning. "I will be spending a lot of my early time getting to know all of you both on campus and off campus, and listening and learning about the Kansas State culture and your programmatic direction," Linton said. "I want to know your aspirations and your dreams for the future, and I want to help find pathways to get there. I can't wait to be your president, and go Cats!" Linton and his wife, Sally, are parents of two: Lily, a senior in high school, and Chris, a sophomore in high school.

Just after 9a.m. Saturday, officers filed a report for criminal use of a financial card in Riley County, according to the RCPD activity report.

A 65-year-old woman reported an unknown suspect used two of her credit cards for bail bonds in Florida. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $4,982. Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

As I watched the Super Bowl, it occurred to me this is a truly American event only Americans really get. It is a sporting event that is really a national holiday where we celebrate commercials and eat ourselves into oblivion. For most of us the game is the third attraction. Only in the United States would we use the last football game of the season for a reason to gorge ourselves on food we would normally not eat. As I thought about all of this it occurred to me, the biggest MVPs of the Super Bowl are really us, the farmers and ranchers who are responsible for this impressive spread. I know the MVP of the Super Bowl is generally a superstar quarterback who makes more money than any of us will ever see, but I would argue the men and women responsible for all the appetizers, chips and dips, and desserts are the true stars. We take food for granted. Sure, the pandemic helped make consumers aware of how important and fragile the food supply is, but most of the time we forget just how good we have it. That is because as farmers and ranchers we have done such a tremendous job of growing food and fiber that consumers have become accustomed to having an array of available sustenance anytime they want it. In the case of our Super Bowl parties, we can find food we didn’t even know we needed. What we are celebrating during the Super Bowl is not the best two teams of the NFL. What we are really celebrating is the abundance that American agriculture provides our great nation. We are celebrating the vast variety and abundance we all have grown to expect in the grocery store. Shelves and shelves with choices we often take for granted. I know most of us don’t do this for recognition, we are just doing our jobs. But do you know what? We are the best in the world at what we do. No other nation produces as much food or utilizes its resources as well as we do here in the United States. We may not be paid millions of dollars like the superstars we watch in the Super Bowl, but we are just as good. That is something to be proud of. We may never be the MVP of the big game or get a championship ring for what we do, but I do know one thing for sure. The Super Bowl would be just another game without the wings, sliders and other snacks. The commercials would be just more annoying breaks between the game if it were not for the meat and cheese trays, veggies, and cookies. Do you know what? Those of us who produce all that great food really are the MVPs. At least in my book we are.

Full Bowls and Football

USD 475 and Fort Riley would be involved in a proposed construction work support agreement. The school district's Chief Operations Officer, David Wild, described it to Military Affairs Council members as a $10 million pass-through. He told JC Post, "That's an initiative we're working on with Fort Riley. We're in a pilot program under&nbsp; intergovernmental support agreement for a little bit of construction work done by district contractors on behalf of Fort Riley Public Works. "&nbsp;

Wild said that program has proven to be successful so&nbsp; they're looking to enlarge it out of a pilot to a sustained program. "Where the district contractors under state procurement rules will be doing work for Fort Riley.&nbsp;

Wild noted that it could be a program of up to $10 million dollars per year. "The district receives a fee for handling that process, again it's still under development, but something I think it's going to be a go."

The acquisition of the former Watco railcar repair shop in Junction City by Eagle Railcar Services was announced this past week. The general manager for Eagle Railcar Services James Bullard said the facility in Junction City is in a great location for them. "It's in a great location, the infrastructure that's here, the community, the opportunities for expansion, honestly it's really what drove us to acquire this facility."

Bullard said the same services will be offered but the facility will also be expanded into a tank car repair shop. "Currently it's strictly only a freight car shop but in 2022 we will actually be certified to become a tank shop as well. So there will be additional infrastructure and expansions to go along with that."

Bullard confirmed that some new employees were hired the first week and the goal is to take the employee total from 20 up to 50 in a 30 to 45 day period. "I would say by the end of the year we should be somewhere between 80 and 100 employees."

Eagle Railcar Services general manager discusses purchase in Junction City

MANHATTAN—Law&nbsp; enforcement authorities are investigating a gun fight in rural Riley County.

Just after 3:30p.m. Sunday, officers responded to the report of gunshots in the 3300 block of Valleydale Drive outside Manhattan, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

When officers arrived on scene, they found indications of gunshots exchanged between 36- and 37-year-old males during an isolated incident. Neither party involved was present when officers arrived.

There is no perceived threat to the public regarding this incident.&nbsp;The&nbsp;investigation is ongoing, no arrests have been at this time.

RCPD investigating gun fight just outside Manhattan

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) - Tremelle Montgomery, 19, of Fort Riley, remains in custody following his first court appearance Friday afternoon via video conference from Riley County Jail.

Judge Kendra Lewison read the charges to Montgomery, which include first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder for the shooting that killed&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wibw.com/2022/02/05/one-person-is-dead-after-overnight-shooting-aggieville-another-custody/">Joshua Wardi.</a>

Montgomery appeared without a lawyer present and requested a court-appointed attorney until his parents can make arrangements to hire an attorney for him, Judge Lewison agreed to assign a public defender to his case.

Judge Lewison denied Montgomery’s request to lower his bond. Lewison stated his bond would remain at $1.5 million due to his permanent address and family residing in Atlanta, Georgia, making him at risk of flight.

If Montgomery is released on bond, there are conditions set by Judge Lewison which must be met, including bond supervision with electronic monitoring, no contact with the 3 individuals connected to the case, and Montgomery is restricted from possessing firearms unless required during his employment.

Montgomery’s preliminary hearing is March 1st at 1:00 pm with Riley County District Magistrate Judge William Malcolm.

As of February 9th,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wibw.com/2022/02/09/aggieville-homicide-suspect-booked-after-recovering-police-shooting-topeka-hospital/" target="_blank">KBI said charges for the related officer-involved shooting&nbsp;</a>of Montgomery have not yet been decided.

Suspect in shooting case has first court appearance

MANHATTAN —Testing done by Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a href="https://ceezad.org/">Center of Excellence for Emerging and Zoonotic Animal Diseases</a>&nbsp;is helping protect more than&nbsp;100 mammalian species of animals in zoos around the world from SARS-CoV-2 infections. Zoo animals are receiving the experimental vaccine developed by&nbsp;<a href="https://news.zoetis.com/press-releases/press-release-details/2021/Zoetis-Donates-COVID-19-Vaccines-to-Help-Support-the-Health-of-Zoo-Animals/default.aspx">leading animal health company Zoetis</a>. The U.S. Department of Agriculture authorized use of the experimental vaccine on a case-by-case basis to help protect mammals living in zoos. Zoetis has donated the vaccine to the zoos, which have been using it since summer 2021. A team at K-State's&nbsp;<a href="https://ceezad.org/">Center of Excellence For Emerging and Zoonotic Animal Diseases</a>, or CEEZAD, led by&nbsp;Jürgen A. Richt, tested the vaccine for safety and efficacy against SARS-CoV-2 infection. Richt is director of CEEZAD and the Regents distinguished professor in the university's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/">College of Veterinary Medicine</a>. "This developmental work on a COVID-19 vaccine for animals is an important step to protect susceptible animal species against SARS CoV-2 because research has shown that SARS-CoV-2 can be a threat to segments of the pet, wildlife and zoo animal populations," Richt said. "We know that domestic and large cats and many zoo animals are highly susceptible to SARS-CoV-2, probably acquiring the virus from their handlers." Zoetis initially began its work on a COVID vaccine for animals in February 2020 when the first dog was confirmed to be infected with SARS-CoV-2 in Hong Kong. Global animal health authorities have thus far determined there is no need for a COVID vaccine for household pets. Richt said doing these studies was both a great opportunity and a serious responsibility. "These types of vaccines can be of significant assistance in combatting the disease and the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 among susceptible animal populations, including endangered animal species," Richt said. "Members of my laboratory were delighted to be given the opportunity to play such an important role in the evaluation of this vaccine and contribute to saving endangered animals worldwide." Vaccine testing at K-State took place at the university's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bri.k-state.edu/">Biosecurity Research Institute</a>, a biocontainment research and education facility.

 </figure>MANHATTAN —Testing done by Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a href="https://ceezad.org/">Center of Excellence for Emerging and Zoonotic Animal Diseases</a>&nbsp;is helping protect more than&nbsp;100 mammalian species of animals in zoos around the world from SARS-CoV-2 infections. Zoo animals are receiving the experimental vaccine developed by&nbsp;<a href="https://news.zoetis.com/press-releases/press-release-details/2021/Zoetis-Donates-COVID-19-Vaccines-to-Help-Support-the-Health-of-Zoo-Animals/default.aspx">leading animal health company Zoetis</a>. The U.S. Department of Agriculture authorized use of the experimental vaccine on a case-by-case basis to help protect mammals living in zoos. Zoetis has donated the vaccine to the zoos, which have been using it since summer 2021. A team at K-State's&nbsp;<a href="https://ceezad.org/">Center of Excellence For Emerging and Zoonotic Animal Diseases</a>, or CEEZAD, led by&nbsp;Jürgen A. Richt, tested the vaccine for safety and efficacy against SARS-CoV-2 infection. Richt is director of CEEZAD and the Regents distinguished professor in the university's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/">College of Veterinary Medicine</a>. "This developmental work on a COVID-19 vaccine for animals is an important step to protect susceptible animal species against SARS CoV-2 because research has shown that SARS-CoV-2 can be a threat to segments of the pet, wildlife and zoo animal populations," Richt said. "We know that domestic and large cats and many zoo animals are highly susceptible to SARS-CoV-2, probably acquiring the virus from their handlers." Zoetis initially began its work on a COVID vaccine for animals in February 2020 when the first dog was confirmed to be infected with SARS-CoV-2 in Hong Kong. Global animal health authorities have thus far determined there is no need for a COVID vaccine for household pets. Richt said doing these studies was both a great opportunity and a serious responsibility. "These types of vaccines can be of significant assistance in combatting the disease and the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 among susceptible animal populations, including endangered animal species," Richt said. "Members of my laboratory were delighted to be given the opportunity to play such an important role in the evaluation of this vaccine and contribute to saving endangered animals worldwide." Vaccine testing at K-State took place at the university's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bri.k-state.edu/">Biosecurity Research Institute</a>, a biocontainment research and education facility.

The UPU wellness team participated in the WorkWell KS (WWKS) worksite training to receive a grant to improve the health and wellness of the workplace. WWKS, a partner in the Pathways initiative, is a statewide program that provides leadership, training, and resources for businesses and organizations to support worksite health. To be eligible to apply for funding worksites were required to have their wellness committee participate in the WWKS foundation workshop, implement wellness policies and procedures, and complete a development plan for worksite improvement.

UPU Industries manufactures high-performance bale netting for premium crop protection. Founded in Northern Ireland more than 40 years ago, this family-run business provides its range of wrapping products to over 30 countries worldwide and has a sister manufacturing base in Junction City that serves both the U.S. and Canada markets.

The UPU Farmer’s brand specializes in big bale solutions, including net wrapping, pallet netting, and baler twine for hay, straw, stalks, and silage baling. Using innovative production techniques, their net wrap is perfectly flat across the whole roll of netting. Field testing has demonstrated that this guarantees a tighter bale with over-the-edge cover to ensure the most efficient storage and transportation of round bales.

Ice College of Engineering&nbsp;has helped an area manufacturing company to create a new hand sanitizer dispenser and a bottle manufacturing line to meet the need created by the recent supply chain difficulties. <a href="http://circlebmanufacturing.com/" target="_blank">Circle B Manufacturing</a>,&nbsp;Junction City, was awarded a Personal Protective Equipment grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce in late 2020 to assist in procuring the manufacturing equipment needed to produce both a new hand sanitizer dispenser and the bottles needed to fill the dispenser. During the same time period, the Technology Development Insitute was able to provide Circle B with design and prototyping assistance through its Innovation Stimulus Program, which was funded through the Economic Development Administration EDA CARES Act. As the pandemic was ramping up, new dispensers were nearly impossible to obtain from overseas suppliers and bottles of sanitizer to refill existing dispensers were not readily available — especially to smaller producers in the market. As a result of joining funding streams, Circle B was able to work with the engineering staff at the institute to benchmark competitive dispensers from a variety of suppliers and select the most desirable aspects from each unit to incorporate into a single new design that could be manufactured at their production facilities. In addition to the injection molding machines needed to produce the dispensers, the company was able to acquire blow molding equipment to begin producing bottles of various sizes in large volume. "We have had great support from a wide range of entities across Kansas to help us bring this concept to reality," said Kenny Burris, vice president of Circle B. "We are hopeful that we can begin to reshore some portion of the manufacturing that has been sent overseas in the past several decades." Circle B began producing commercial bottles at the end of 2021 and is currently seeking to expand its production for new customers. The company is currently working on completing the tooling needed to begin production of the hand sanitizer dispensers and hopes to have that completed and in production by the end of 2022 as well.&nbsp;

Multiple topics ranging from downtown banners to a local Adopt a Soldier program were covered during the monthly Military Affairs Council meeting this week.

--Hanging of banners recognizing individual military veterans was a successful downtown event around the Veterans Day time frame in 2021. A new suggestion called for possibly putting up banners honoring individual first responders during the Fourth of July period such as police, EMS, firemen and nurses.&nbsp;

--The Adopt a Soldier program currently has about 25 Soldiers matched up with approximately 15 families.

--The Flint Hills Regional Leaders Retreat that was scheduled in Manhattan in January was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns. It has been rescheduled for March 11h and 12th.

--Ryan Kules from the Wounded Warrior Project will be the guest speaker for the Military Affairs Council breakfast on Feb. 24th at the Geary County Convention Center. Cost will be $15 for civilians and $12 for active duty military. Check-in begins at 7 a.m. with the breakfast scheduled from 7:30 - 9 a.m.

MAC discussion covers a range of topics

Cards of appreciation have been presented to staff at the 21 buildings in Geary USD 475 by Nita Miller, the President-Elect of the JC Breakfast Optimist Club. Representatives of each school were given a card signed by members of the Club and including words of encouragement and a modified form of "The Optimist Creed."

“Educators in USD 475 have faced challenging times during the pandemic. The JC Breakfast Optimist Club wants the staff to know they are appreciated for all their work and for who they are as caring, giving, encouraging people”, Nita said.

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club encourages other Kansas clubs to express appreciation to their school district’s educators and support staff during this month of Optimism.

Organizers met this past week to begin planning for 2022 Oktoberfest in Junction City. 

During a Military Affairs Council meeting on Thursday Terri Butler noted that the dates for the second annual celebration will be Sept. 30th and Oct. 1st. "We're using all the successes that occurred this year, all the ideas that were presented to make it even better."

Butler noted that the event is expected to run during the day on both Friday and Saturday into the evening. They're hoping for a big turnout. "We're going to plan for 10,000 over the two days," said Butler.

This past year the the initial festival was held Oct. 8th and 9th on Friday afternoon and evening, and during the day on Saturday. Attendance was estimated at about 4,000 on Friday alone with a large evening turnout.

Damarion Sellers and Kaya Sparks were named the winter homecoming king and queen Friday night at Junction City High School.&nbsp;

The royalty were crowned between the varsity girls and boys basketball games with Topeka West.

Topeka West won the girls game 54-22 and the Chargers defeated the Blue Jays in the boys contest 65-62.

Winter Homecoming royalty are selected at JCHS

Thanks to efforts of volunteers and Junction City residents contributing their used Christmas trees, quail and rabbits now have a shelter at Sportsman's Acres. The group met on Jan. 29th at 14th &amp; Jackson in Junction City and began hauling the trees.

The trees were hauled to the youth hunt area of Sportsman's Acres and were placed in a windrow designed to provide maximum overhead protection for ground birds and wildlife.

Ray McDonald, Charlie Bogen, Shirley and Gordon Allen, Eric Hiatt, Dan Hammond, Ollie Hunter and Larry George helped haul and place the trees.

The Fish &amp; Game Association has been collecting and recycling Christmas trees in the Junction City area for many years.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — First District Congressman Tracey Mann joined 90 other representatives in introducing the Protecting Family and Small Business Tax Cuts Act, a bill that would make permanent the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017 signed into law by President Trump.

The TCJA included historic tax cuts for American families and small businesses. The average family of four received an annual tax cut of $2,900, while the business provisions helped lead to record levels of new investment and wage growth for employees.

"Prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Kansas families and businesses were thriving under the pro-growth policies of the Trump Administration,” Mann said. “TCJA provided more opportunities, greater economic development, and a positive impact on their income. Unfortunately, many of these tax cuts will expire at the end of 2025. Our legislation ensures many provisions of the 2017 tax cuts remain in place, giving Kansans the certainty of lower taxes and better opportunities both now and into the future."

The Protecting Family and Small Business Tax Cuts Act will make the TCJA tax cuts permanent. Key provisions of the bill include:

Making permanent the doubled standard deduction of $12K for individuals and $24K for couples filing joint returns.

Maintaining the ability for homeowners to deduct interest payments on their mortgages.

Maintaining the Medical Expense Deduction to allow the deduction of qualified health care expenses that exceed 7.5% of an individual’s income.

Provides a 20% tax deduction for small businesses.

Foghat will be the headliner for Sundown Salute July 4th in Milford.&nbsp;

According to a release from Sundown Salute committee chair Michelle Stimatze, other performing groups during the five day celebration will include Goddesses of Rock, The HYPE, Queens of Country, Ricochet, Special Forces - Salute to .38 Special, Peace, Love &amp; Music, Tate Stevens, Diamond Rio and Silver Bullet - A Tribute to Bob Seger.

The celebration is scheduled from June 30th through July 4th. Specific times and days for the different performers during Sundown Salute has not yet been released. Specific times and days for the different performers during Sundown Salute has not yet been released. In Geary County, there are going to be many events taking place throughout the month. From a 5k run to a Poetry and Spoken Word Social, there will be many things to choose from. The events are to honor Black History and bring the community together.

Although this will be an open mic event, all patrons must have a ticket in advance to enter (those with a free ticket will be added to the program in advance. Tickets will not be sold at the door. The entry fee for general admission (non-performers) will go to the cost associated with this event in conjunction with the beneficiate.

The best performer of the night will win the "Golden Trophy".

Benefit: A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to NAACPLDF organization.

The first Black History Month Run, will take place on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2021. The race will start and finish at the Buffalo Soldier Park, Junction City, KS 66441. The course will be a flat and fast course. Participants running the 5k will receive a race shirt, finishers medal, post-event snacks and refreshments and more.

Paid registrants before 2/1/2022 and you will be guaranteed a race shirt, custom bib, official time, sweetheart box, and finishers medal. Free registrants will receive a custom bib, sweetheart box, and official time. Registration ends February 11th.

This run is partially supporting The Respect Runners Association scholarship fund.

Proper care can extend the life of the favored holiday flower

MANHATTAN – The calendar indicates that love will soon be in the air, and for those fortunate to receive Valentine’s Day&nbsp;roses, Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham has some guidelines for extending the life of the flowers.&nbsp;

“For floral arrangements,” he said, “keep the vase filled or floral foam soaked with warm water. Add fresh, warm water daily. If the water turns cloudy, replace it immediately.”&nbsp;

Upham suggests re-cutting stems by removing 1-2 inches with a sharp knife, while holding the stem under water.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;roses&nbsp;should be kept in a cool spot – 65-67 degrees Fahrenheit, Upham said – and away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents. He also suggests avoiding areas under ceiling fans or near radiators.&nbsp;

“If a rose starts to wilt, remove it from the arrangement and re-cut the stem under water,” he said. “Submerge the entire rose in warm water. The rose should revive in 1-2 hours.”&nbsp;

For loose stem&nbsp;roses, Upham shared the following tips:

●If you can’t get your flowers in a food solution right away, keep them in a cool place.

●Fill a clean, deep vase with water and add the flower food obtained from the florist. Follow directions on the package.

●Remove leaves that will be below the waterline. Leaves in water will promote bacterial growth.

●Re-cut stems under water with a sharp knife and place the flowers in the vase solution.

Upham and his colleagues in K-State’s Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly Horticulture Newsletter with tips for maintaining home landscapes. Military Affairs Director Craig Bender is putting together arrangements to welcome home 1st Infantry Division Soldiers from overseas deployments.&nbsp; The April 23rd event would be for members of the Combat Aviation Brigade and the 1st Brigade. "CAB came back in December and pending Russia doing anything kind of crazy in Ukraine, 1st Brigade should be back in the March time frame so that's why we're aiming for April, because it will give them some time to do block leave."

Bender plans to hold the welcome home at the Athletic Training Center, 935 East Fourth Street. He is trying to get the All American Beef Battalion organization to help provide food for the event. "But if that doesn't work out we're going to do a taste of Junction City. Reach out to a lot of the restaurants in town and have them come out and hopefully give out some food to Soldiers and advertise what they have in our community."

ABILENE - The former Brookville Hotel property at Abilene is scheduled for a bank foreclosure sale next week.

The historic restaurant, which moved from Brookville to north of Interstate 70 at Abilene in 1999, is scheduled to be sold at 10 a.m.&nbsp; Monday&nbsp;in the new lobby of the Dickinson County Courthouse, located at 109 E. First Street, according to information from Kathy Hageman, Dickinson County public information coordinator.

The Brookville Hotel had ceased being a hotel and focused on its famous chicken dinners long before it moved to Abilene.

The sale was ordered by Dickinson County District Court on behalf of Pinnacle Bank, Hageman noted in a release. According to the legal notice, the order requires the restaurant property to be sold during a public auction to the "highest and best bidder for cash in hand."

Although the sale is a foreclosure sale and not a tax sale, taxes owed to Dickinson County on the property from 2016 to Monday are $200,053.90, according to Dickinson County Treasurer Leah Hern.

Additionally, the appraised value of the Brookville Hotel property is $636,330.
