TOPEKA, Kan. – Geary County Schools USD 475 in November received multiple recognitions in the Kansas State Department of Education’s 2021 Kansans Can Star Recognition award program.

Geary County Schools was awarded Copper recognitions in Kindergarten Readiness and Academically Prepared for Postsecondary.

“Congratulations to everyone at Geary County Schools for their exceptional work toward achieving the state board’s vision for Kansas education,” Kansas Commissioner of Education Dr. Randy Watson and Kansas State Board of Education Chair Jim Porter said in a letter to the district.

MANHATTAN —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a theft from Dillons and are asking the public for help with information.

Just after 3p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for aggravated robbery and theft in the 1101 block of Westloop Pl. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;Dillons and a 28-year-old man reported 57-year-old woman and 59-year-old man deliberately priced items incorrectly while using the self-checkout and left the store. 

The 28-year-old man working security at the store, made contact with the male suspect who pulled out a handgun on him.&nbsp; The suspects then left in a 2002 black Ford Taurus. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is unknown at this time. 

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

RCPD: Suspect pulled handgun on Dillons security guard

Craig Bender, the Military Affairs Council (MAC) Director, was the guest speaker at the JC Breakfast Optimist Club Celebration of Optimism at the Hampton Inn on Wednesday.

Bender told the group that he was hired as the Director of the Military Affairs Council following retirement from the Army as a Signal Officer in 2019.

Bender stated that he “works closely with Fort Riley organizations to maintain and build positive relations with soldiers and their families and the Geary County community. One of those ways is a hosting of soldiers and community members at MAC Breakfasts, which are held on the fourth Thursday of each month beginning at 7:30 AM. Topics alternate between presentations by Fort Riley and those of by local community leaders. Some other ways he is working to build positive relationships between the community and soldiers at Fort Riley include the Veteran Banners on the lamp posts located in downtown Junction City.” WATCO and the Junction City High School welding class, led by instructor, Jared Gross, partnered to make some of the brackets to hold the banners onto the lampposts. WATCO is a Kansas based transportation company that offers customers water, rail, road and air transportation material handling and storage, repair and maintenance, logistics and design and development located on Hoover Road in Junction City.

Spouse reciprocity is an opportunity for military spouses who are stationed at Fort Riley to be granted teacher licensure within 15 days of application for a Kansas Teacher License. 65th District House of Representative, Lonnie Clark, helped get this process in place.

Craig also stated that most recently he and others “have also been working with Lonnie Clark to get a Veterans home in Junction City located at the Tom Neal Industrial Park near Interstate 70. Twenty-five to fifty acres with infrastructure is already available for this facility. One hundred twenty jobs would be created if that facility were created.” To show support of this facility, local citizens should send a letter to Representative Lonnie Clark at 300 SW 10th Street; Room 352-S; Topeka, Kansas 66612.

&nbsp;Bender said that he has recently taken Fort Riley spouses on a “Spouse Welcome Bus Tour”. The purpose of the tour was to “show off local business and things to do in Junction City/Geary County.”

Due to COVID-19 and CDC guidelines, there will not be any dine-in for the free Community Thanksgiving Dinner hosted by the First Presbyterian Church, but they will still provide a full course meal. To protect the health and safety of everyone, all meals will be available for curb-side pickup only.

The time to pick up meals will 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 25, at the parking lot behind the church at 113 West 5th Street. Meals will include turkey, stuffing, green beans, mashed potatoes, yams, cranberry sauce, gravy, roll and a slice of pumpkin, apple or sweet potato pie.

Meal orders must placed no later than 2:30 p.m. this Friday, Nov. 19. Call 785-238-1191 from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and indicate the number of meals ordered.

Community Thanksgiving dinner will be a curb-side pickup event

Sheriff's authorities have identified the victim of a fatal shooting incident that occurred Oct. 3 as a female subject, Enfinnity Latania Hayes, 22, Fort Riley. The incident was believed to have taken place at the Milford State Park Group Shelter.

Hayes&nbsp; was approached by a man described as 6’1” or taller dressed in all black who approached the victim and her husband and attempted to rob the couple at gun point. There was a gun shot and the victim fell to the ground. She was driven to Geary Community Hospital by her husband.

Geary County Treasurer Kathy Tremont has submitted her resignation, effective Feb. 1. Now Todd Godfrey, Geary County Republican Central Committee Chairman, has announced that there will be a convention to select her replacement. That selection, upon the approval of Governor Kelly, will serve as the County Treasurer for the remainder of 2022.&nbsp;

The convention will be held Tuesday, Nov. 23 at the Geary County Senior Center. Republican Central Committeemen and Committee women need to bring photo identification to vote in this convention. Credential check in will begin at 6 p.m. and the convention will begin at 7 p.m.

Godfrey stated that 17 precinct delegates will meet, names for treasurer will be nominated, must be seconded by a precinct person, nominees will be allowed to speak and then the precinct members will then vote for their choice. The process being utilized is similar to the one used to replace both a former sheriff and county commissioner.

Geary Community Hospital Trustees have voted in favor of a resolution to meet with the county commission and assist in any way possible on discussion of options for finding a way to take care of maintenance needs in the hospital building. Earlier this week county leaders received a report showing more than $27 million would be needed to meet all the maintenance and repair requirements.

Theresa Bramlage, Hospital Board Chair, confirmed the Trustees plan to move forward and will do everything possible to keep the hospital functioning. Options that might have to be considered could potentially include a bond issue. "We also are working on some collaborations and will have more conversations about that. There's a lot in the works right now, and so a lot more discussion." GCH leaders have been working for some time on a partnership for operating the hospital.

The information about the maintenance needs came as a surprise. Bramlage said it as shocking. "We spent over a million dollars in repairs and a lot of that was emergency type repairs, putting out fires if you will. To see this price tag it's huge, but it's years of not doing and that's the sad thing."

Angel Silva-Almaraz, Abilene was traveling eastbound in a Hyundai Sonata and struck a deer in the roadway. Airbags were deployed and Silva-Almaraz complained of chest and foot pain, but refused medical transport. The vehicle was removed by Gross Wrecker.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged scam involving gift cards.

Just before 2:30p.m. Monday, officers filed a report for theft by deception in the 100 block of Bluemont Ave. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 60-year-old woman reported an unknown suspect called her saying her Amazon account was hacked and she needed to purchase gift cards and provide them to the caller as a remedy. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,000.

Geary County Commissioners may need extra-strength pain reliever to deal with their newest headache. Commission Chair Trish Giordano announced on Monday that there was a discussion with representatives from Henderson Building Solutions and the Geary Community Hospital Board of Trustees. A three-step plan was outlined to bring the hospital back up to code and fix maintenance issues. "The approximate total is almost $28 million. "

Giordano said the issue will receive discussion at the Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday, but there will have to be some strategic planning between the county and the hospital. "The hospital building belongs to the county, it is the county's responsibility. And even if somebody takes over the services at the hospital it's still going to be our building. So it's something we as a commission need to address ASAP. "

According to a power point presentation to the commission, the grand total of funding needed over the next four years equates to $27,856,150. The expenses would be necessary in areas ranging from mechanical and plumbing to electrical, fire protection and vertical transport. More than $2.2 million has been proposed for contingency funds.

Giordano added that they may have to talk with their bond counsel, and work totaling nearly $12 million needs to be done as soon as possible.

Massive repairs are needed at Geary Community Hospital

GEARY CO., Kan. – Fort Riley Middle School sixth grade student RJ Shed has worked to better his community in many ways, volunteering across Geary County alongside his neighbor.

However, when it came time for Shed to join his neighbor and volunteer at the Geary County Food Pantry for the first time, he wasn’t sure what to expect.

“When we first drove up, I saw a family with a bunch of children. They didn’t look clothed right; they didn’t look healthy. I felt really bad for them,” Shed said. Shed spent the day handing out cans of food to people in need, just like that family.

“I felt really good about it, and I decided when I got home that maybe we should do a canned food drive at our school, so we can feed homeless people that need food,” Shed said.

Since then, the sixth graders at Fort Riley Middle School have been hard at work bringing in cans of food for the pantry, especially with the help of a little friendly competition. The winning class gets a donut party, according to Shed. “I said to my mom the day that I left for school to tell my teachers about the food drive, ‘I’ve done my part, now I need the school to do theirs,’ and they did it, and I am very proud of our school,” Shed said.

With the help of his classmates, Shed will help hundreds of families in Geary County in need, just like the family he saw on his first day of volunteering.

“People in life need help. Every once in a while, I need help. It’s always good to help people that need things, [especially] their basic needs just to survive,” Shed said. “I just hope that I have faith in humans that we can actually be good species, so you don’t have to go sit on the streets begging people for money. I just really hope that.”

On Wednesday, Shed will donate the collected cans of food to the shelter and hopes to help distribute them to the families in need once again.

‘People in Life Need Help’: FRMS student organizes food drive to help feed the community

Geary County Public Works will have to deal with a shortage of equipment operators including snowplow / motor-grader operators. Corey Trumpp, Public Works Administrator, said the shortages are in line with workforce shortages across the state.&nbsp;

Manhattan—Fire crews were called to a pair of small house fires Monday in Manhattan.

Just after 2:30 p.m. the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to 2924 Hickory Court for a report of a mower on fire spreading to the house. 

Upon arrival, crews found a riding mower on fire under a deck that had spread to the exterior of the home, according to Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Almes. The fire was contained within 10 minutes and smoke was ventilated from the home. The building is a single-story single-family home. Loss is estimated at $4000 to the structure and $1200 to the riding mower. The fire cause is accidental due to the mower catching fire from dry leaves.

Crews found the single-family home with a smoldering fire in the attached garage that was extinguished.&nbsp; 

Crews ensured the fire was out and ventilated the structure.&nbsp; The occupants were home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. Loss is estimated at $85,000 to contents and $3000 to the structure.&nbsp; The fire cause was determined to be accidental due to an aquarium heater in the garage, according to Almes.

Aquarium heater blamed for weekend fire at Manhattan home

The 2021 Junction City Blue Jay varsity football team went 8-2 and clinched a share of the Centennial League championship along with Washburn Rural and Manhattan. They also won a postseason game against Haysville Campus.

The Blue Jays were recognized during an awards assembly at JCHS on Sunday.

Coach Randall Zimmerman told the audience the Blue Jay seniors were a "great group of guys who had overcome a lot." He noted that there had not been an awards assembly for two years because of COVID-19. "But you're able to be a part of teams that went 26-7 your last three years. Last two years, 18-4, that's a pretty good mark."

Numerous awards were presented. The award and the recipients&nbsp; included:&nbsp;

Ron Lowry Memorial Award given to the most outstanding freshman was presented to Petren Bartolome.

Malcolm Tibbetts Memorial Award to the most inspirational player went to T.J. Jones.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a jewelry store theft in Manhattan.

Just after 2p.m. Friday, police filed a report for theft in the 400 block of Poyntz Ave. in Manhattan. Danenberg Jewelers&nbsp; reported an unknown suspect stole a 14k yellow gold engagement ring on October 14.

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $5,600.

RCPD: Suspect stole $5600 engagement ring from store

Gary McIntosh remembers his first impression when he set eyes on the public hunting land surrounding Milford Lake.

“It was like a bird hunter’s dream,” said McIntosh, who lives in Lewisburg, Ohio. “We don’t have anything like this back in Ohio.

“I was just amazed at how much good public land and quail habitat there was.”

That day back in 1998 marked the start of a tradition. McIntosh, his German shorthairs and a group of his friends return to the Kansas Flint Hills every year for some of the best quail hunting the nation has to offer.

They stay at Acorns Resort for four to five days and range out to either the Milford Wildlife Area or the Fort Riley army base. The group has grown to six to eight hunters and as many as 12 German shorthairs.

It’s quite an entourage when the group rolls down the road from Ohio to Kansas each year. “It’s exactly 714 miles from my house to Acorns,” McIntosh said. “It’s a long trip, but it’s worth it.”

McIntosh and his crew are just a few of the many non-residents who are drawn to the Milford Lake area each fall. In a state that is public-land poor, the Milford area stands out.

The Milford Wildlife Area boasts 19,000 acres of public land filled with timber, brush, grasslands and wetlands. The nearby Fort Riley army base also offers thousands of acres of land open to the public when Army maneuvers aren’t being conducted. (Special permits in addition to Kansas hunting licenses are required.)

Of course, that abundance of public land is no secret. It gets heavy hunting pressure from Kansas residents and nonresidents alike. But for those who scout and are willing to walk far away from the nearest access points, great opportunities await.

Be forewarned. It’s not the easiest land to navigate. After flooding in recent years, plenty of thick vegetation and brush has grown. But that habitat now supports good populations of the wildlife hunters seek.

· Deer: The Milford Wildlife Area is known as one of the best public hunting areas in Kansas for deer. Bowhunters take some trophy bucks, especially in the more remote areas of the wildlife area. Recent surveys by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks indicated the deer population is in good shape.

· Quail: Justin Wren, manager of the Milford Wildlife Area, says the bobwhite numbers on the wildlife area are on a steady increase. “This is my fourth year here at the wildlife area, and I’ve seen more quail every year,” he said. “They’re in some heavy habitat, but they’re out there.” The thick brush on Fort Riley also holds good numbers of quail.

· Waterfowl: Some cells on the Milford Wetlands have good water and habitat conditions this fall to welcome migrating ducks and geese. Lower Smith, Mall Creek and Quimby Creek, in addition to the youth mentor area, all offer good conditions.

· Pheasants: While the best pheasant hunting in Kansas generally is west of the Milford Lake area, the Milford Wildlife Area and Fort Riley does have birds and often presents mixed bag opportunities with the quail.

That public hunting is good for business in Geary County. It draws hunters from across the nation to resorts, hotels, restaurants and convenience stores.

“We get hunters from all across the country,” said Mike Harris, who owns Acorns Resort and RV Park on Milford Lake. “Texas is huge for us.

“We’ll have hunters who stay for a week and hunt public land almost exclusively.”

Harris has added to the hunting opportunity by opening Acorns Wild, a controlled shooting area on the Geary-Dickinson county lines. Pen-raised birds are released, and paying customers hunt them, either with a provided guide and bird dogs or by themselves.

Whatever the case, Geary County has plenty to offer hunters once fall arrives.

RILEY COUNTY —A Kanas woman man was injured in an accident just before 7:30a.m. Sunday in Riley County.

A 2001 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Michaela Denlinger, 26, of Topeka, rolled in the 9600 Block of Fancy Creek Road in Randolph, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Lifestar transported Denlinger to Stormont Vail in Topeka for treatment of her injuries. The RCPD released no additional details.

Kansas woman airlifted to hospital after rollover accident

Glenn Brunkow, Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher In a few short days we will all sit down and celebrate Thanksgiving. The holiday that is meant for us to reflect and decide what it is for which we are thankful. We have a lot to be thankful for in this great nation, not the least of which is our farms and ranches. This is so appropriate because Thanksgiving is associated with food. My guess is most of us will have the traditional feast of turkey and all the fixings, right down to the pumpkin pie. No matter what you include for your Thanksgiving dinner, without a doubt it will be one of biggest feasts of the year. All of this great food is brought to you by a fellow farmer or rancher, even the yams. While I do not know any yam farmers and, to be honest, I am not even sure what a yam is. I do know the people who grow them are good. Those of us involved in agriculture are part of the fabric that is the foundation of this great nation. At the core of every great society is a robust, self-sufficient food supply. We are so blessed in the United States to have the safe, abundant, wholesome food supply within easy reach.. Most of us have never really faced empty shelves. Sure, there are times like right before a predicted snowstorm the shelves may be a little low. But very few of us have ever faced a real shortage of food. We got a little glimpse of this during the pandemic, but any deficits were short lived. We are also fortunate to spend a relatively small portion of our earnings on food. We are used to having the shelves full and the prices at a reasonable level and that is all because of the hard work we put in as farmers and ranchers. The price of this year’s Thanksgiving dinner has undoubtedly gone up because of inflation. But it is still a feast that comes at an amazing bargain, and one we do not take enough credit for. This coming week is when we, as farmers and ranchers, should be sticking our chests out with pride and letting the world know about the remarkable things we do to put food on tables around the world.. This is true every day but especially the day when we are to give thanks, and our way of giving thanks is centered around a great meal. See what I mean about food being at the center of our society? We have a lot to be thankful for in this great nation, but at the top of that list is our food supply. It is OK to take pride in the fact that all of us do our part to provide the safe, abundant, wholesome food we all need. That is also something to be thankful for, and I wish you all the happiest of Thanksgivings.

Glenn Brunkow, Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher In a few short days we will all sit down and celebrate Thanksgiving. The holiday that is meant for us to reflect and decide what it is for which we are thankful. We have a lot to be thankful for in this great nation, not the least of which is our farms and ranches. This is so appropriate because Thanksgiving is associated with food. My guess is most of us will have the traditional feast of turkey and all the fixings, right down to the pumpkin pie. No matter what you include for your Thanksgiving dinner, without a doubt it will be one of biggest feasts of the year. All of this great food is brought to you by a fellow farmer or rancher, even the yams. While I do not know any yam farmers and, to be honest, I am not even sure what a yam is. I do know the people who grow them are good. Those of us involved in agriculture are part of the fabric that is the foundation of this great nation. At the core of every great society is a robust, self-sufficient food supply. We are so blessed in the United States to have the safe, abundant, wholesome food supply within easy reach.. Most of us have never really faced empty shelves. Sure, there are times like right before a predicted snowstorm the shelves may be a little low. But very few of us have ever faced a real shortage of food. We got a little glimpse of this during the pandemic, but any deficits were short lived. We are also fortunate to spend a relatively small portion of our earnings on food. We are used to having the shelves full and the prices at a reasonable level and that is all because of the hard work we put in as farmers and ranchers. The price of this year’s Thanksgiving dinner has undoubtedly gone up because of inflation. But it is still a feast that comes at an amazing bargain, and one we do not take enough credit for. This coming week is when we, as farmers and ranchers, should be sticking our chests out with pride and letting the world know about the remarkable things we do to put food on tables around the world.. This is true every day but especially the day when we are to give thanks, and our way of giving thanks is centered around a great meal. See what I mean about food being at the center of our society? We have a lot to be thankful for in this great nation, but at the top of that list is our food supply. It is OK to take pride in the fact that all of us do our part to provide the safe, abundant, wholesome food we all need. That is also something to be thankful for, and I wish you all the happiest of Thanksgivings.
