The Junction City First Methodist Men are hosting their annual fundraiser next Saturday, April 12. The fundraiser is a breakfast called Pancakes and Smiles, and it will be at the First United Methodist Church at 804 N. Jefferson St. in Junction City. The breakfast will run from 7:00-11:00 a.m. This free-will donation breakfast features pancakes, sausage, coffee, and orange juice.

This meal was initially scheduled for the First Methodist Men's annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Meal but was canceled due to inclement weather.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement investigating a shooting have arrested a Kansas teen.

On Thursday, police arrested 17-year-old Delron Tyree Jr, of Topeka on a warrant on requested&nbsp;charges that include two counts of Attempted Murder in the 1st degree, Criminal Use of Weapons, Criminal Discharge of a Firearm, and three counts of Criminal Damage to Property, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;Tyree was already confined at the time of arrest for a previously released&nbsp;robbery arrest. &nbsp;This arrest stems from a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/civicalerts.aspx?aid=591">shooting</a>&nbsp; that took place on November 30th.&nbsp; Tyree is being held on a $750,000 bond, according to the Riley County Police Department arrest report.

After two cold months we returned to a more expected weather pattern. &nbsp;March was significantly warmer than average temperatures and significantly drier than normal!The average daily high for March was 64.5, 8.4 degrees above normal. The average overnight low was 38.7, 5.9 degrees above normal. This gave us a monthly mean temperature of 51.7, 7.2 degrees above normal. 

This made March the third warmest March on record. The warmest March was in 2012 when we had a monthly mean temperature of 57.5. The second warmest March was in 2007 when we had a monthly mean temperature of 52.1. The four warmest March’s on record have been in the last 18 years. The coldest March was in 1960 when we had an average temperature of 31.3 degrees. The warmest temperature in March was 84 degrees on the 27th. This was also a record high for that date. The previous record was 82 degreees set in 1989. &nbsp;That was the only temperature record set for March. The lowest temperature for the month was 26 degrees on the morning of March 6th.

After two snowy months and above average precipitation total in January, March fell well below the long term average precipitation for the month. Average precipitation for March is 2.0 inches and March 2025 recorded only 0.59 inches. While well below average it did not make it into the ten driest March’s on record. The driest March is a tie between 1966 and 1968 when no precipitation was recorded. The wettest March was in 1974 when 8.04 inches was recorded! Year to date we have received 2.58 inches, below the long term average of 3.83 inches. 

We received a trace of snowfall during March, on the 5th and 20th. Thanks to above average snowfall in January and February we are above average for the year. Average annual snowfall is 18 inches and through the snowfall season, October thru April, we have received 25.2 inches. &nbsp;April brings the promise of spring with readily warming temperatures. Average daily highs in April start the month with 63 degrees and by the end of the month they are pushing 70, with a reading of 68 on the 30th. Avererge overnight lows on April 1st are 38 and by the 30th they have risen to 47. April also starts the “wet” season for the year. Average April precipitation is 3.15 inches. April through August precipitation accounts for 65% of our annual average precipitation.&nbsp;

GCCC Art Show projects were on display to the public

On April 3rd, the Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force announced 100 Kansas schools that have been named recipients of the 2024 Challenge Awards. Herington Elementary was named a 2024 recipient. The Challenge Awards recognize schools for outstanding achievement and uncommon accomplishments of students based on the Kansas Assessment Program results in math and reading, especially those students of ethnic minority group and who qualify for free and reduced-priced meals.

This recognition is another reflection of the commitment from our students, staff, and stakeholders to the educational priorities the USD 487 board of education and district leadership have established. Herington Elementary School is Named a 2024 Challenge Award Recipient

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. – In her two years in Geary County Schools USD 475, Jolene Dukes has definitely made her mark as a teacher in and out of the classroom. Dukes, who is a Special Education teacher at Sheridan Elementary, has been able to build amazing relationships during her short time in the district, while also creating a classroom and 21st&nbsp;Century after-school program that is fun and engaging.&nbsp;“Teaching is my passion. I take great joy in building relationships with both my students and colleagues, creating a classroom environment that is safe, fun, and engaging. There’s nothing better than seeing a student’s eyes light up when they accomplish something they once thought was impossible. I always remind my students that every day is a fresh start, and anything is possible,” said Dukes.&nbsp;

To fully understand Dukes story and why her drive and love for seeing her students shine is as passionate as it is you must go back to her childhood. Dukes grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated from Lincoln High School. While at LHS, she was involved in volleyball, choir and the drama club. At the young age of 16 though she was introduced to martial arts and fell in love with it. So much so that she continues to practice Taekwondo and Muay Thai to this day. She has even begun working it into her after school activities at Sheridan.&nbsp;“In addition to my role as a Special Education teacher, I also enjoy teaching Taekwondo as part of the 21st Century program each week. It’s rewarding to share my love for martial arts with students and help them build confidence, discipline and physical skills,” said Dukes, who proudly served in the United States Army for eight years.&nbsp;

Those same qualities of building confidence, discipline and working on a skillset have truly served her well in the classroom during her short tenure as she has been able to teach several Special Education students’ different areas and been able see their growth, daily.“One of my favorite moments as a teacher is witnessing the excitement in a student’s eyes when they master a new skill. Watching my students find joy in learning is what drives me every day,” said Dukes.&nbsp;

Through it all, Dukes, who is an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan and loves to travel, has found a home in USD 475 after previously working as a paraeducator for Des Moines Public Schools and graduating from William Penn University in 2016.&nbsp;“I love being part of such a close-knit district in USD 475. The sense of community here makes teaching even more rewarding,” said Dukes.&nbsp;

Dukes Shares Love for Martial Arts at Sheridan Elementary

The Geary County Commission has supported the expenditure of $4,000 to rebuild the Butterfly House at the Milford nature Cemter. It collapsed during the snow last winter.

CVB funds will be utilized for the project.

The facility is considered a tourism education resource.

 A male reported being contacted by an individual posing as an FBI agent.  The victim was instructed to deposit money into a crypto currency ATM. The victim lost $7,000, according to the RCPD.&nbsp; Police released no additional details.

The First Thousand Members Club is hosting a Family Fun Day this Saturday, April 5, at the Harmony Center in Junction City. The Harmony Center is located at 540 Grant Ave.

The event will be from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., featuring cultural games and activities, a cooking workshop, face paintings, pickleball, and other vendors. 

Vendors are still wanted for the event. For more information, contact Martine Chery-Hilaire at 240-898-8120.

Manhattan City Commissioners have voted to move a proposed economic development application for PTMW Inc. to a second consideration on April 15.

The project was outlined before the commission Tuesday. The company is based in Topeka and wants to expand into Manhattan with a 112,500 square foot facility and eventually include up 146 jobs. The median wage was projected at $22 an hour.

The company does manufacturing and welding with plans to fabricate skids or steel structures. PTMW would make a nearly $14 million investment in building and equipment. There would be a 10-year lease with a possible 10-year 100 percent property tax abatment.

The proposal includes building a partnership with Manhattan Area Technical College for welders.&nbsp;

Chapman Powerlifting teams have successful showing at Class 3A State meet

Marcus Reed, a
senior at Chapman High School set three records and captured a state
championship this past Saturday at the class 3A State Powerlifting
meet in Iola, Kansas. 


Reed, competing in
the 114 lb weight class, placed first in the bench press, clean, and
squats. He set a new state record for his weight class with bench
(205 lbs), squat (305 lbs) and overall weight of 715 lbs. 

Reed was named the lightweight lifter of the meet.

Chapman Student wins state championship, sets records at 3A Powerlifting meet

Warwick, RI (April 2, 2025)&nbsp;–&nbsp;Corvias has announced the expansion of its first-of-its-kind mission readiness solution to enhance the indoor environment in more than 4,500 homes across three U.S. Army installations. The U.S. Army approved the rapid rollout of home improvements at Fort Bragg, Fort Meade and Fort Riley&nbsp;for more than 15,000 residents.

The expansion follows initial pilots that included substantial&nbsp;on-site testing to validate post-implementation enhancements to air and water quality, excess humidity and lighting conditions.

Corvias&nbsp;partnered with Vitacorps, a company dedicated to delivering safe and healthy living environments through research-based solutions, to design and implement the program following a comprehensive assessment of indoor conditions for the benefit of service members and their families.

“With the support of our Army partner,&nbsp;Corvias&nbsp;is the first Military Housing Privatization Initiative team to implement a program to maintain certifiable indoor air, water, and light standards,” said Denise Hauck, Department of Defense President at&nbsp;Corvias. Families whose homes were part of the pilot programs reported that given the frequent relocations common in a military career, enhancements to air and water quality help them stay healthy as they adjust to new climates and local allergens.&nbsp;

The local Optimist Club meets every Wednesday at 6:30 to 7:30 AM at the Hampton Inn located at 1029 S. Washington Street in Junction City.  The club's Mission is to provide hope and positive vision through the members of the club that will bring out the best in youth, members and community. 

Sixteen different youth organizations are donated to each year and three scholarships are also annually awarded. Anyone interested in supporting youth in Geary County is invited to attend and enjoy a free breakfast buffet at their first meeting.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating alleged identity theft and have made an arrest.

Just before 3:30p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for forgery, attempted unlawful obtaining a prescription drug and identity theft in the 500 block of 3rd Pl in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity re port,

&nbsp;A 30-year-old woman and a 50-year-old woman were reported a 35-year-old woman used the victim’s information to attempt to obtain a prescription drug. 

Marijke Torres, 35, of Manhattan was arrested on requested charges of attempted unlawful obtaining a prescription drug, forgery and 3 counts of identity theft. Torres was issued a total bond of $14,000 and is no longer in custody, according to the RCPD.&nbsp;&nbsp;
