Geary Water District Four will make repairs Thursday to a line break in the 3200 block of Rollinghills Drive, Milford. Those areas that may be effected with a water outage include Rollinghills Drive,,Rollinghills Circle, Laurence Drive and Walter's Drive. Water service will be restored as soon as possible.

Dickinson County Fire District #1 and the Geary County Rural Fire Department responded to a barn on fire on K18 near the Geary County line on Wednesday. First arriving units found the barn totally engulfed in flames and began a defensive attack. Other responding departments were Sherman and Fragrant Hill Fire&nbsp; and Chapman Fire manned the refill hydrant in Chapman.&nbsp;

While fighting the blaze, firefighters were battling a north wind over 30 mph with ice pelts hitting them in the face.&nbsp;

The Geary County Rural Fire Department was dispatched&nbsp; out Tuesday night about 9:30 pm for a group of trees that were on fire in the area of US77 Hwy and N. K-57 Hwy.  Several large cottonwood trees were on fire and had fire extending up the entire length of the trees. 

Due to the high winds, embers were being sent several yards away.  The fire was about 300 yards off the roadway, so a water shuttle operation was used with Grandview Plaza Fire and Ft. Riley Fire assisting with the water shuttle. A pumper unit then sent the water to brush units at the fire site.  A decision was made to cut down the burning trees, some over 3-4 feet in diameter. Crews then extinguished the fires.

The Kansas State Fire Marshal' s Office was called in to assist with the investigation of the fire.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kim Zimmerman, the City Manager for Junction City, was the guest speaker at the JC Breakfast Optimist Club meeting held at the Hampton Inn on March 19. Mr. Zimmerman told members that he was originally from Pennsylvania. After college he joined the US Army and served for 24 years. One of his assignments was for four years at his “favorite post – Fort Riley”. Kim was stationed at Fort Riley from 2004-2008.

While at Fort Riley, he deployed to Iraq with his unit and served as the Mayor of the FOB Falcon (Forward Operating Base), a secured military installation used to support tactical operations. Kim worked with contractors to have a theater built and some fast-food restaurants established after the dining facility had been destroyed by an incoming rocket.

Zimmerman has only been on the job as the Junction City City Manager for a few months. He stated that “honesty, transparency and truth is what you will get from me.” He also believes in quality communication and prefers people who have concerns go directly to him so he can do what he can to solve problems or address issues a citizen may be having. He shared that there are two questions he often asks himself in doing his work. The questions are “What do you know and who else needs to know?” Giving people facts is important to establishing trust.

Major General&nbsp; Monte L. Rone, the Commanding General of the First Infantry Division and Fort Riley, will be the guest speaker at this month's Military Affairs Council Breakfast.&nbsp;

The Breakfast will be on Thursday, March 27, at JC Naz, located at 1025 S. Washington St., in Junction City.&nbsp;

The traffic signal at 6th St. and N. Jackson St. is currently out of service due to equipment failure. City crews have ordered the necessary replacement parts and are actively working on repairs. However, the intersection is expected to remain without a functioning traffic light for at least four weeks.

Temporary stop signs have been installed, and drivers are required to treat this intersection as a 4-way stop until further notice.

Please be sure to use extra caution when approaching and driving through the area.

The camp is open to students going into the grades of 7th, 8th and 9th.  The application deadline is May 9th, 2025. Applications can be picked up from the Junction City Middle School, the Junction City High School or at the Junction City Police Department.

 Completed applications can be given to the School Resource Officer at the Junction City Middle School, Junction City High School, mailed, emailed or hand delivered to the Junction City Police Department, 210 E. 9th Street. All I-70 lanes are reopened

Junction City Animal Shelter Director Vanessa Gray spoke to students at Spring Valley Elementary School last week. Gray noted that she highlighted&nbsp;animal safety, what they all do at the animal shelter, and all the fun animals they get to see.&nbsp;

While at Spring Valley Elementary, Gray was presented with a $560 donation to the animal shelter. The money was raised in school during the month of February.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Roughly 50,000 to 60,000 civilian jobs will be cut in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/us-department-of-defense">the Defense Department</a>, but fewer than 21,000 workers who took a voluntary resignation plan are leaving in the coming months, a senior defense official told reporters Tuesday.

To reach the goal of a 5% to 8% cut in a civilian workforce of more than 900,000, the official said, the Pentagon aims to slash about 6,000 positions a month by simply not replacing workers who routinely leave.

A key concern is that service members may then be tapped to fill those civilian jobs left empty by the hiring freeze. But the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to provide personnel details, said Defense Secretary&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/pete-hegseth">Pete Hegseth</a>&nbsp;wants to ensure the cuts don't hurt military readiness.

The cuts are part of the broader effort by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/elon-musk-donald-trump-doge-b21b74f56f30012a6450a629e7232a1a">billionaire Trump adviser Elon Musk</a>&nbsp;'s Department of Government Efficiency Service to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dams-fired-workers-electric-flood-control-irrigation-1369398af058b661d40ef6b68216c775">slash the federal workforce</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-voice-of-america-cuts-3faf72e620dbc5f42e5508a2b9d8c8da">dismantle U.S. agencies</a>.

Acknowledging that “some” military veterans will be among the civilians let go, the official would not estimate how many but agreed it could be thousands.

The department is using three ways to accomplish the workforce cuts: voluntary resignations, firing probationary workers and cutting jobs as employees routinely leave. The official said the military services and Pentagon officials are going over the personnel on a case-by-case basis to ensure cuts don't affect critical national security jobs.

Officials would not say how many Defense Department civilians requested the voluntary resignation plan — also known as the “Fork in the Road” offer — but said more requested it than the number who eventually were approved.

The defense official said the “vast majority” were allowed but that in some cases, people were denied for national security reasons or to make sure that too many people in one office didn't all leave.

He added that Hegseth also has given the secretaries of the military branches and Defense Department personnel leaders the authority to grant exemptions to the hiring freeze.

An average of 70,000 civilians are hired each year, which amounts to about 6,000 a month, he said. Because the services have a good deal of latitude in determining which jobs should not be subject to the freeze, it's not clear what portion of those 70,000 would actually be eliminated.

Plans to cut probationary workers, which the Pentagon said targeted about 5,400 of the roughly 54,000 in the department, are already&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mass-firings-federal-workers-trump-administration-7cc7320f469cc65529367aaea2fd9dcb">on hold due to court challenges</a>. Federal judges ordered the administration to rehire thousands, if not tens of thousands, of probationary workers that had been let go, finding legal problems with the way the mass terminations were carried out.

The official added that Hegseth is confident the staffing cuts can be done without negatively affecting military readiness. The Pentagon chief last month in Germany noted that he was planning to welcome DOGE to the Pentagon, adding that "there are waste, redundancies and headcounts in headquarters that need to be addressed.”

Across the government, about 75,000 federal workers are being let go through “deferred resignation program” buyouts. And at least 24,000 probationary employees were initially let go in the now-paused&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-elon-musk-federal-workers-layoffs-d295d4bb2cdd5023c27d9cb03754e81b">mass firings</a>&nbsp;across multiple agencies since Trump took office, according to lawsuits challenging the firings. The government has not confirmed that number.

The personnel reductions come as top Democrats on the House Judiciary and House Oversight committees have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/doge-trump-musk-house-democrats-foia-6d0d66b73e002ef7e9d6a69c585266c1">filed a lengthy Freedom of Information Act request</a>&nbsp;questioning whether&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/doge-government-trump-executive-order-1a2fb7235b9d6f178c764cf6c78d3317">the Trump administration’s DOGE Service</a>&nbsp;is operating “outside the bounds of federal law,” The Associated Press has learned.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 International semi driven by Thad E&nbsp;Boman, 56, Hubbell, Nebraska, was eastbound on 27th Avenue and traveled partially into the north ditch. The driver attempted&nbsp; to bring the vehicle back onto the roadway. The semi rolled and came to rest partially in the roadway and in the north ditch.

EMS transported&nbsp;Boman to the Hanover Hospital. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The Geary County Food Pantry is excited to announce they will be applying for the Kansas Community Service Tax Credit Program by the end of April. If awarded, this program would allow individuals and businesses to make donations to the food pantry while receiving a state tax credit equal to 50% of their contribution. The Geary County Food pantry is now accepting pledges from donors interested in pledging their support and potentially benefiting from the tax credits. These pledges will show community support for the food pantry’s expansion building project and increase the likelihood that the tax credits are awarded.

The food pantry is currently fundraising for its ongoing building campaign and for the purchase of vital equipment to improve the efficiency and accessibility of its services. In addition to completing construction of the new building, planned upgrades include a walk-in cooler and freezer, reach-in coolers and freezers, a pallet jack, and other essential items. These improvements will help the pantry better serve the 1,500 individuals and families who rely on the various food programs.

Geary County is currently experiencing the highest level of food scarcity in Kansas, with 15.7% of the population and 29.2% of the children facing food insecurity. The food pantry’s mission is to provide vital resources to those in need, and these donations will help the organization continue to make a meaningful impact in the community.

The deadline to make a pledge for donation is April 15, 2025. In July, the pantry will be notified if they have been awarded the requested tax credits. All donations made through this program will directly benefit the food pantry’s capital improvements and operational upgrades.

The Geary County Food Pantry is excited to announce they will be applying for the Kansas Community Service Tax Credit Program by the end of April. If awarded, this program would allow individuals and businesses to make donations to the food pantry while receiving a state tax credit equal to 50% of their contribution. The Geary County Food pantry is now accepting pledges from donors interested in pledging their support and potentially benefiting from the tax credits. These pledges will show community support for the food pantry’s expansion building project and increase the likelihood that the tax credits are awarded.The food pantry is currently fundraising for its ongoing building campaign and for the purchase of vital equipment to improve the efficiency and accessibility of its services. In addition to completing construction of the new building, planned upgrades include a walk-in cooler and freezer, reach-in coolers and freezers, a pallet jack, and other essential items. These improvements will help the pantry better serve the 1,500 individuals and families who rely on the various food programs.Geary County is currently experiencing the highest level of food scarcity in Kansas, with 15.7% of the population and 29.2% of the children facing food insecurity. The food pantry’s mission is to provide vital resources to those in need, and these donations will help the organization continue to make a meaningful impact in the community.Pledge Deadline: April 15, 2025The deadline to make a pledge for donation is April 15, 2025. In July, the pantry will be notified if they have been awarded the requested tax credits. Tickets are on sale now at the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library for the library foundation’s 4th Annual Trivia Night.&nbsp;&nbsp;Scheduled for Saturday, April 12 at 6:00 p.m. this event will be held at Spin City, 915 South Washington Street.

Tickets are $45 each or four for $170 when purchased in advance at the library or online at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.jclib.org/">www.jclib.org</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Tickets will also be available at the door for $50 each.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ticket price includes admission to the event, supper provided by Billy Sims BBQ, soda and water.&nbsp;&nbsp;One free drink ticket for those 21 and older is also included and a cash bar will be available.&nbsp;&nbsp;Participants must be 16 or older to attend.&nbsp;

Dave Lewis will host the contest which will feature general knowledge trivia.&nbsp;&nbsp;People can either play as individuals or in teams.&nbsp;&nbsp;Each team, including a team of one, will need at least one, fully charged, internet-ready device to play.

All proceeds from the event will go to the foundation and the project to expand/remodel the current library.&nbsp;&nbsp;A 50/50 drawing will also be held along with a gift basket silent auction, and a bead challenge.
