RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a burglary at a church in Riley County.

Just before 10a.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for burglary in the 15800 block of Green-Randolph Road. in Randolph, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Alert Covenant Church reported an unknown suspect took cash and electronic equipment. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $4,000. Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Geary County Offices will be closed on Thursday, June 19 in commemoration of Juneteenth. This includes the Geary County Public Works Department, HHW/Recycling Center, and the County Landfill. The Geary County Transfer Station will remain OPEN.

The Emancipation Proclamation, an edict issued by President Abraham Lincoln freeing the enslaved, went into effect January 1, 1863.  The information did not reach all parts of the Confederate south for over two years, June 19, 1865, now commemorated as Juneteenth. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Geary County Public Works Department will be conducting chip seal operations on county roads beginning Monday, June 23, 2025, and continuing for approximately three (3) weeks, weather permitting. Chip sealing is a preventive maintenance process that helps extend the life of roadways by sealing the surface from water intrusion and improving traction.

Motorists should expect temporary traffic delays and reduced speed limits, fresh oil and loose gravel on roadway surfaces, and one-lane traffic controlled by flaggers. Avoid driving or turning abruptly on freshly treated surfaces and follow all posted signage and instruction from traffic control personnel.

Geary County Emergency Management provided a weather update from the National Weather Service. A mostly dry and mild afternoon Wednesday with only slight chances for thunderstorms. While isolated in nature, they could produce gusty winds around 50 mph and small hail. 

Dry forecast commences Wednesday evening through the end of the week as upper ridge builds in. Focus turns to the heat as high heat indices peak near 100 degrees each afternoon Friday through Sunday.

Flood watch/warnings have been cancelled and 20% chance of rain in the early afternoon.&nbsp;&nbsp;

High school seniors and college students can learn about career opportunities in precision agriculture, data analysis and variable rate application equipment during Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.agronomy.k-state.edu/outreach-and-services/educational-workshops/precision-agriculture-workshop/">Smart Farm Challenge Precision Agriculture Workshop</a>&nbsp;from July 27-29.

Workshop participants will engage in hands-on activities, including flying drones, learning about soil and plant sensors, and collecting field data. There will also be opportunities for participants to engage with industry partners to connect what they are learning to the wide range of precision agriculture career fields.

As many as 30 participants will be learning from faculty at the agronomy facilities and farms on the Manhattan campus, including all meals and housing in the residence halls.

Students of any skill level or familiarity with precision agriculture and agronomy are welcome to attend. The cost of the workshop is $50. Registration is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.agronomy.k-state.edu/outreach-and-services/educational-workshops/precision-agriculture-workshop/">online</a>&nbsp;and will close on July 11 or when it's full.

GEARY COUNTY—Four people were injured in an accident just after 6p.m. Tuesday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander driven by Jeffery A.&nbsp; Jones, 31, Herington, was northbound on U.S. 77 six miles south of Junction City. The SUV&nbsp;hydroplaned and traveled into the south ditch.

EMS transported Jones and passengers 22-year-old Zed A.&nbsp;Bryant, 38 Jennifer L&nbsp;Wangerin-Smith, both of Herington and 31-year-old Derrick J.&nbsp;Hawkes of Manhattan to&nbsp;Stormont Vail - Flint Hills Campus - Junction City. Hawkes was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

At 21.0 feet, the north bank of the creek floods near the HWY 77 bridge.  At 23.6 feet, the south bank of the creek floods near HWY 77.At 8:15 AM CDT Tuesday the stage was 6.0 feet.The river is expected to rise above flood stage late Wednesday morning to a crest of 22.6 feet early Wednesday afternoon. It will then fall below flood stage Wednesday afternoon.Flood stage is 21.0 feet.

The Junction City Police Department's Community Involvement Unit will be giving away bicycles of all sizes on Friday, June 20th, 2025, from 4:00 until 6:00 pm. These bicycles will be given away as is - first come first served.

The Junction City Brigade's home game vs the Newton Rebels for tonight has been canceled due to field conditions and inclement weather expected around game time.&nbsp;

Geary County Commissioner Trish Giordano wants a one percent increase in the transient guest tax. "I think it would be beneficial for our community." The current TGT rate is six percent, which is below the 7.5% rate in Manahttan and nearly eight percent in Abilene.

Giordano and other members of the governing body along with the public weighed in on the issue during a discussion Monday evening at the County Office Building. Transient guest tax is paid by the people who use lodging facilities. Much of the revenue supports Convention and Visitors Bureau operations but one percent is targeted for any possible future sports complex project.

&nbsp;No final action was taken but Giordano confirmed that the topic will be brought back up during the commission meeting on June 30.

Giordano started the conversation by suggesting using the sports complex funds be used to help impact existing sports facilities such as the 4-H softball field and the rodeo arena. "We need to look at local stuff because a huge sports complex is not coming any time soon." The amount of money currently in the sports complex account totals approximately $816, 700.

Commissioner Kathy Tremont noted that she was all for improving quality of life. " She favors having a work session with oher entities prior to the June 30th commission meeting, "So that we could all come together and make a good decision for everybody in our community as to how we want to spend this money and what to do with it." The other entities could include the City, USD 475, Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau, Chamber of Commerce and EDC.

County Chairman Keith Ascher thinks the topic requires more discussion. "Get more specifics, get a plan. I agree that we need to talk to different entities." Ascher favors doing a feasibility study before anything is done on this issue.&nbsp;

By Dewey TerrillJC PostGeary County Commissioner Trish Giordano wants a one percent increase in the transient guest tax. "I think it would be beneficial for our community." The current TGT rate is six percent, which is below the 7.5% rate in Manahttan and nearly eight percent in Abilene.Giordano and other members of the governing body along with the public weighed in on the issue during a discussion Monday evening at the County Office Building. Transient guest tax is paid by the people who use lodging facilities. Much of the revenue supports Convention and Visitors Bureau operations but one percent is targeted for any possible future sports complex project.&nbsp;No final action was taken but Giordano confirmed that the topic will be brought back up during the commission meeting on June 30.Giordano started the conversation by suggesting using the sports complex funds be used to help impact existing sports facilities such as the 4-H softball field and the rodeo arena. "We need to look at local stuff because a huge sports complex is not coming any time soon." The amount of money currently in the sports complex account totals approximately $816, 700.Commissioner Kathy Tremont noted that she was all for improving quality of life. " She favors having a work session with oher entities prior to the June 30th commission meeting, "So that we could all come together and make a good decision for everybody in our community as to how we want to spend this money and what to do with it." The other entities could include the City, USD 475, Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau, Chamber of Commerce and EDC.County Chairman Keith Ascher thinks the topic requires more discussion. "Get more specifics, get a plan. I agree that we need to talk to different entities." If these storms form, very large hail, damaging wind gusts, and a few tornadoes are possible.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a robbery in Manhattan and have made an arrest.

Just 8a.m. Monday, police arrested 17-year-old Rostyn Rothwell,of Hallsville, Texas on requested charges of&nbsp; aggravated robbery, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.&nbsp;This arrest is in connection to a report filed for aggravated robbery in the 1500 block of Pipher Lane in Manhattan that occurred April 11.

Rothwell is being held without bond in the North Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center at the time of this report.

This is day 1 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Harvest moved into southern Kansas about a week ago, but since then it has been slow going. With scattered showers and high humidity, most days the combines can’t get rolling until late-afternoon. There are reports that farmers have gotten into dry fields along the I-135 corridor, as far north as Mitchell County.

Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is only 3 percent complete, well behind 25 percent complete last year and behind 11 percent on average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending June 15, 2025. Winter wheat conditions were rated at 21 percent poor to very poor, 30 percent fair and 49 percent good to excellent.

Chris Stevens, General Manager of Farmers Coop Grain Association in Conway Springs, reports that harvest began last Monday, June 9, but it has been hit or miss. They’ve only taken in about 10% of the bushels they expect, but should be halfway complete by now. So far, it’s too early and too spotty to tell how test weights are going to average, but they’ve heard yield reports from 26 to 50 bushels per acre, which would be an average crop. He mentioned that some of the later maturing varieties had the advantage this year because of the rains. The area doesn’t have any disease pressure so far this year. Stevens is hoping that forecasted showers dodge them and it gets hot and dry for harvest this weekend.

However, the National Weather Service in Wichita is forecasting thunderstorms across the harvest area Tuesday afternoon. Winds up to 80 mph, hail up to tennis ball size and heavy rainfall are all possible.

Chris Fryer, Grain Merchandiser with CoMark Equity Alliance LLC in Cheney, says they’ve only taken in about 5% to date, even though harvest started last Tuesday, June 10. They would normally be about a third done by now, but rains have kept harvest from progressing. The quality has been very good so far, and yields are better than last year.

Main Street Monday | Downtown JC Happenings | June 16 - June 22, 2025

The Junction City Fire Department would like to remind you that the city has changed the ordinance regarding sale and discharge of fireworks. The change was made to mirror surrounding communities and to simplify the times.

Fire Chief Jason Lankas said that except as otherwise provided in this ordinance, it is unlawful for any person or entity to sell, store, or discharge fireworks within the city limits of Junction City. Term "fireworks" as used in the Code of Ordinances of the City shall have the definition set forth in the regulations of the Fire Marshal of the State of Kansas.

Fireworks may be sold and stored pursuant to rules and regulations established by the Chief of the Junction City Fire Department ("Fire Chief'), and subject to the obtaining the Special Event Permit from the Fire Chief as provided in Chapter 655 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Junction City, Kansas

1. Fireworks shall only be sold in the City when it is legal and permitted to discharge them.

2. Fireworks for sale or display may be stored in the City of Junction City, Kansas two days prior and two days following the period allowed for discharge and sale of fireworks.

Discharge of fireworks within the City of Junction City is prohibited at any time, except as follows:

Junction City, KS – The Geary County Childcare Coalition (GC3C) is excited to announce receipt of the Child Care Zones grant from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), through its Child Care Matters initiative and in collaboration with All In For Kansas Kids.

KDHE initiated the Child Care Zones program in early 2025 to support communities working to address local child care issues. A Child Care Zone is a self-defined geographic area (of at least two counties) that receives state-level support to address community-specific child care challenges. 

The proposal submitted by GC3C for the zone of Geary and Dickinson County includes four initiatives to be instituted over the next 2 and a half years. 

The Extended Hours Pilot Program will provide funding to selected providers to expand their facilities and staff to care for children for extended day and nighttime hours. Selection will be based on an application process that will be open for all licensed Geary and Dickinson County providers this summer. 

The Employer-Sponsored Childcare Cooperative will help businesses secure existing childcare slots for their employees. These slots will be funded with partial grant money, matched by employers and will be prioritized for industries and businesses with high turnover due to child care challenges. 

The Universal Pre-K Curriculum Alignment will provide the opportunity for three and four-year-olds in participating child care centers and home-based settings to receive a standardized curriculum aligned with local school districts' early childhood education programs. Participating providers will receive training, curriculum materials, and ongoing support to implement high-quality early learning experiences that prepare children for kindergarten. 

The Apprenticeship and Scholarship Program will address child care workforce shortages by providing scholarships and apprenticeship opportunities for individuals pursuing a career in early childhood education.
