SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged sexual assault and have a suspect in custody.

At approximately 1230 a.m., March 21, officers responded to an alleged rape that occurred in the 9000 block of West Kellogg in Wichita, according to officer Paul Cruz. Upon the officer's arrival, an 18-year-old female victim who reports being raped by 38-year-old Lyle P. McClanahan of Wichita.

Through the investigation, officers learned the victim met McClanahan through a dating app. The victim told police that the suspect picked her up and took her to a separate location where she was sexually assaulted.&nbsp;

Police arrested McClanahan of Wichita on requested charges of of rape, attempted aggravated criminal sodomy, possession of methamphetamine and possession of marijuana, according to Cruz. He remains in custody on a $150,000 bond<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=107088">, according to online jail records.</a>

Police capture SW Kansas criminal threat suspect

SEDGWICK COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigting an armed robbery and have made an arrest.

Just after 10 a.m. Monday, police responded to an armed robbery call&nbsp; Little Caesar’s in the 2500 block of South Seneca, according to officer Charley Davidson.

A 37-year-old female employee told police as she exited the back of the business, a suspect later identified as 41-year-old Joshua Freimark got out of a white four-door sedan and approached her.&nbsp; 

Freimark then pushed her to the ground, pointed a gun at her, took the bank money bag she was holding, and fled on foot.&nbsp; 

An unknown person driving the white sedan also fled.&nbsp; The employee sustained minor injuries.

A WPD officer was following up on information regarding the robbery and learned of Freimark’s involvement.

On Thursday, officers located&nbsp; Freimark at his home on in the 3800 block of East Ross Parkway and arrested him without incident.&nbsp; Officers also recovered two handguns, two ballistic vests, two rifles, a sawed-off shotgun, and ammunition inside the home.&nbsp;

Freimark is being held on a requested charge of aggravated robbery.

He has previously been arrested and convicted on charges that include aggravated battery, aggravated robbery, criminal possession of a firearm, possession of drugs, driving while suspended and driving while a habitual violator, according to Davidson.

Police arrest Kan. man who stole business bank deposit bag 

A chase that reached speeds over 100 mph Thursday afternoon through two counties on Interstate 70 led to an arrest in Ellis County.

At 3:18 p.m., a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper recorded a speed of over 100 mph of a 2015 black Audi with Florida tags traveling westbound on I-70 near Bunker Hill, according to KHP trooper Tod Hileman.

When the trooper attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled westbound into Ellis County.

With the assistance of the Ellis County Sheriff's Office stop sticks were deployed on two overpasses near Victoria, Hileman said.&nbsp;

The driver avoided the first set, but drove over the second, deflating one tire and separating the tread from the tire.

The driver then stopped the vehicle near milepost 167.

Jerome Rhone, 27, Jacksonville, Fla., was placed under arrest without further incident at 3:33 p.m. on suspicion of felony flee and elude law enforcement, transportation of an open container of alcohol, driving with a suspended license, speeding, and unsafe passing in the right-hand lane.

A passenger in the vehicle was not charged and released.

On November 29, 2019, police responded to a burglary report at a storage facility in the 1800 block of West 21st&nbsp;Street North in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.&nbsp; 

&nbsp;A 19-year-old female employee of the storage facility&nbsp; reported a burglary of two storage units at the business.&nbsp; Through the investigation, investigators learned of 36-year-old Mikeal Brown’s involvement in the burglaries.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Just after 10 p.m. on Wednesday March 25, officers responded to a residential robbery call at a home in the 3900 block of West 13th&nbsp;Street North in Wichita.&nbsp; 

Upon arrival, officers located a damaged front door on the home and contacted a 35-year-old resident.&nbsp; She reported the front door being forced open, and several known individuals entering her home, battering her, and taking items.&nbsp;

Police quickly were able locate five suspects and arrest Brown on two counts of aggravated burglary, two counts of theft, and one count of robbery, according to Davidson.

Police also arrested 40-year-old Jason Stone of Wichita on one count of robbery; 56-year-old Brenda Dickerson of Wichita on charges of robbery and domestic battery; Calvin Allen of Wichita for one count of robbery, and Sherika Barnes of Wichita on charges of robbery and domestic battery.

Police arrest 5 for home invasion attack on Kansas woman

BELTON, Mo. (AP) — A man fatally injured by the FBI was planning a bomb attack on a medical facility in the Kansas City area, the agency said in a news release Wednesday.

Timothy Wilson, 36, was injured Tuesday when FBI agents served a probable cause arrest warrant in Belton after a long-running domestic terrorism investigation, according to a statement Wednesday from Timothy Langan, special agent in charge of the FBI's Kansas City office.

The statement did not detail what happened when agents served the warrant, but said Wilson was armed when he was injured and died later at a hospital.

A monthslong investigation determined that Wilson was a potentially violent extremist, motivated by religious, racial and anti-government beliefs, according to the statement. He had planned for several months to carry out a bombing and decided to target a Kansas City-area hospital using a “vehicle-borne” improvised explosive.

Wilson chose a hospital that was providing critical care during the current coronavirus pandemic and had taken steps to acquire materials to build the bomb in an attempt to cause “severe harm and mass casualties,” according to the statement.

The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force kept close watch on Wilson and was prepared to arrest him when he tried to pick up what he thought was a bomb, although there was no bomb, the statement said. The FBI worked with federal prosecutors in the U.S. Attorneys office in Kansas City during the investigation.

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Authorities say one person is dead after a shooting involving an FBI agent south of Kansas City.

The FBI said in a statement that the shooting happened Tuesday in Belton.

FBI spokeswoman Bridget Patton said the person who was shot died at a hospital. No one else was hurt.

The FBI released no other details, including why agents responded to the area and what led up to the shooting. The agency says the shooting is under investigation.

Update: Man killed by the FBI was planning KC hospital bombing

Just before 11a.m. Monday, police responded to a burglary in progress call at a home in the 3700 block of East Kellogg, according to officer Charley Davidson.

A 26-year-old female resident reported arriving home and seeing a suspect later identified as 30-year-old Raymond Polo going through a vehicle in her driveway and a second unknown male by an exterior shed.&nbsp; 

The victim said both suspects fled on foot after she arrived.&nbsp; Items were discovered to be missing from the vehicle and an unattached garage.&nbsp; Additionally, things inside the home had been moved and gone through.

Officers located&nbsp; Polo in the area, and arrested him.&nbsp; 

Officers found stolen items and property belonging to Polo in the area where he was arrested.&nbsp; Additionally, Polo has been previously arrested and convicted on charges that include criminal possession of a weapon, criminal threat, criminal trespass, theft, burglary, and aggravated escape from custody, according to Davidson.

Police is in custody on requested charges of burglary, aggravated weapons violation, theft, theft from a vehicle, a Kansas Department of Corrections Arrest and Detain order, and an outstanding warrant, according to Davidson.

Police: Kansas woman discovers felon had been in her home

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.&nbsp;(AP) — Human remains found in Florida are believed to be those of a Colorado boy reported missing in January by his stepmother, who was later arrested and charged with killing him, authorities said Friday.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office said the remains of 11-year-old Gannon Stauch were found in Pace, on the Florida Panhandle. Investigators are asking for information from anyone who saw the boy's stepmother, Letecia Stauch, in Pace or nearby Pensacola between Feb. 3 and Feb. 5.

Stauch reported Gannon missing Jan. 27, saying he never returned to his Colorado Springs home after leaving to go to a friend’s house. Authorities initially called him a runaway but three days later said he was considered missing and endangered due to his age, the amount of time he had been gone and his dependence on medication. After a search that lasted for weeks came up empty, investigators presumed the boy was dead and arrested the stepmother in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina&nbsp;on March 2.

She is being represented by the state public defender’s office, which does not comment on cases.

Stauch was brought back to Colorado and charged with first-degree murder, child abuse resulting in death, tampering with a body and tampering with physical evidence. FBI Denver special agent Dean Phillips has said “all evidence points to the disappearance of Gannon being foul play.”

During her return trip to Colorado, Stauch was held overnight March 4, in the Saline County Kansas jail, according to online booking records.

A judge sealed the sworn statement that explains the reason for Stauch's arrest, and investigators and prosecutors have declined to discuss the details of the case. News organizations, including The Associated Press, are suing for the release of the document.

Otis Ponds, a/k/a “Wack” is described as a black male, 41 years of age, approximately 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds

Hill and Ponds were indicted on federal charges on February 26, 2020 in the United States District Court, District of Kansas. These fugitives are two of the 24 individuals who were indicted in a major drug-trafficking conspiracy that was announced

March 4, 2020, by the United States Attorney’s Office, District of Kansas. Members of the public are cautioned not to confront these individuals, but to contact law enforcement immediately as they should be considered armed and dangerous.

SHAWNEE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a a vehicle theft and have made an arrest.

Just after 1 p.m., Wednesday, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office located a stolen blue 2014 Ford Explorer with a trailer attached near NE Gordon Street and NE Monroe Street, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

Deputies arrested Moppin for an outstanding warrant and on requested charges of theft of a motor vehicle, identity theft, possession of a stimulant drug, possession of unlawful drug paraphernalia, and interference with a law enforcement officer, according to Christian.

Just after 2:00 p.m., Friday officers from the Lawrence Police Department were dispatched to an emergency at a residence in the 700 block of W. 25th&nbsp;Street, according to police spokesman Patrick Compton.

Upon their arrival, they discovered two victims who had sustained injuries consistent with a sharp object.

One male victim was transported via helicopter to an area hospital with life-threating injuries and remains in critical condition. A female victim was treated at the scene.

Police arrested a 31-year-old black male on requeste charges of battery, aggravated battery, criminal damage to property and interference with a law enforcement officer.

The circumstances surrounding this incident are unknown, according to Compton. Police released no additional details.

Kansas man air-lifted to hospital after stabbing

MANHATTAN, KAN. – The Riley County Police Department is investigating a murder and have arrested three people.

Just after 10p.m. November 1, the Riley County Police Department Emergency Dispatch center received multiple 911 calls concerning the sound of a gunshot in the 1400 block of Cambridge Place in Manhattan, according to a media release.

When officers arrived on scene, they found 24-year-old, Tanner Zamecnik, suffering from a gunshot wound and died.

Through detailed investigation officers made the initial arrest of Richard Goens, 29, of Manhattan, within 12 hours of the crime occurring.

Goens is being held on a $1 million bond for First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Assault x3, and Aggravated Robbery.&nbsp;

TOPEKA—The Kansas Supreme Court Thursday issued&nbsp;<a href="https://kansascourts.org/l/maDyoBUplXL_RC55P8gYjCWfUKCV7oyxOfbdfNVAwus" target="_blank">Administrative Order 2020-PR-016</a>&nbsp;directing all district and appellate courts to cease all but emergency operations until further order.

The only exception is jury trials that are currently under way. They may proceed to conclusion, but no other criminal or civil jury trials will be scheduled until further order.

The Supreme Court anticipates the order to remain in effect for at least two weeks, at which time it will be reevaluated.&nbsp;

“This is an extraordinary measure to match the gravity of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Chief Justice Marla Luckert. “We have a duty to protect the people who come into our courthouses and courtrooms, as well as our employees and judges. This action allows courts to fulfill core functions while reducing in-person contact.”

Emergency operations are outlined in the Administrative Order, and generally include:

Referenced in the Administrative Order is 2020 House Substitute for Senate Bill 102. On its publication, the court’s Administrative Order will have the effect of suspending until further order all statutes of limitations and statutory time standards or deadlines that apply to conducting or processing judicial proceedings.

During the effective dates of the order, no action will be dismissed for lack of prosecution.

People who have business with a court are urged to try completing that business online, by phone, or by mail. If that’s not possible, the person can call the court for direction. A limited number of staff will be available to answer questions.

State Courts are on emergency operations until further order

WICHITA, KAN. – A Kansas man has been sentenced for the rape and sexual assault of an underage girl over several years. 

On Wednesday, District Judge Jeffrey Syrios sentenced Dzung Ninh, 55 of Wichita, to life plus 165 months in prison, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney.

Ninh will be parole eligible on the life sentence after 25 years. If he is granted parole after 25 years, he will begin serving his 165 month sentence.

The sexual assaults began when the victim was 13 and continued until she turned 17 in 2017. Ninh was arrested shortly after the victim’s boyfriend told her mother about the sexual abuse. The mother contacted police.

Ninh was charged with four counts of rape, two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy, and aggravated indecent liberties with a child. A jury found Ninh guilty of three counts of rape and the remaining counts last January.

Judge Syrios referenced the victim’s fears in his ruling Tuesday afternoon. He said, “No doubt in my mind those fears have now become a reality for her, and that reality will likely continue for the rest of her life. There is a price for imposing that reality on her, on stealing that innocence. The price is this sentence.”

Upon arrival, deputies used a K9 and drone to locate and arrest Travis R. Mann, 42, of Topeka on requested charges of burglary and criminal trespass as well as Mendy L. Hartpence, 40, of Topeka for possession of illegal drug paraphernalia and criminal trespass.&nbsp;

PHILLIPSBURG — Two Phillipsburg residents were arrested Wednesday on drug-related charges following the execution of a search warrant.&nbsp;

"At approximately 1:15 p.m., we executed a search warrant in the 100 block of B Street in Phillipsburg with the assistance of Rooks County Sheriff's K9 Deputy Kota and his driver," according to an announcement by the Phillips County Sheriff's Department.

"As a result, Derek J. Shields, 31, and Nicole Dechant, 28, both of Phillipsburg, were taken into custody with charges pending for possession of controlled substances, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and no drug tax stamp."

Shields was convicted of drug possession in 2010, according to Kansas Department of Corrections records.

Sheriff: 2 jailed after NW Kansas drug bust

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting and searching for suspects.

Just before 9p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a walk-in shooting call at a Wichita hospital, according to officer Charley Davidson.&nbsp;

A 19-year-old man told police he was driving in the area of Ross Parkway and Jewett in Wichita when a suspect fired multiple shots at the vehicle.

A 44-year-old passenger was shot one time in his body, according to Davidson. He was treated for a non-life threatening&nbsp; injury and released. A 19-year-old passenger suffered a minor injury and the driver was not injured.

Police have not reported details on possible suspects or made an arrest.

44-year-old wounded in Kansas drive-by shooting

Just after 9a.m. Tuesday, deputies made a traffic stop on a 2020 Econoline van on Interstate 70 near Wanamaker Road in Topeka, according to Sgt. Todd Stallbaumer. The van was a rental from Ohio.

Through the investigation, deputies found and seized 176 pounds of marijuana. The marijuana has an approximate value of $225,000, according to Stallbaumer.

Deputies also arrested Keith L. Hackworth, 26, of Columbus, OH, and transported him to the Shawnee County Dept. of Corrections where he was booked on requested charges of Possession of Marijuana w/Intent to sell.

Just after 8:40 p.m. Monday, police responded to a home in the 1200 block of West 2nd&nbsp;Street in Wichita to check for a stolen vehicle, according to officer Charley Davidson.&nbsp;

Upon arrival, officers located the stolen vehicle at the home and a woman&nbsp; was backing the car into the driveway.

An 18-year-old man later identified as Kaeden L. Murphy was causing a verbal disturbance in the front of the residence.&nbsp; 

An officer contacted teen and a second officer went to contact the driver.&nbsp; 

The woman put the car in drive, drove into the officer and struck him with the vehicle while fleeing.&nbsp;

 The officer ended up on the hood of the car before sliding off.&nbsp; The second WPD officer lost sight of the first officer believing he was being injured and drug by the vehicle, and fired three shots.&nbsp; The female suspect fled the scene in the stolen car.&nbsp; No one was injured in this event.

Officers arrested Murphy at the home, and he was booked into jail on&nbsp; requested charges of obstruct and outstanding warrants, according to Sedgwick County booking report.

Sometime later, a WPD officer recovered the abandoned stolen vehicle at a business in the 9400 block of East Cooperate Hills Drive.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and WPD are investigating the incident. The KBI assisted in the investigation to provide transparency and avoid conflicts of interest.

WABAUNSEE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities have take a wanted Kansas felon who skipped sentencing hearing two weeks ago into custody.

On March 3, the Wabaunsee County Sheriff asked the public for help to locate 34-year-old Amy Jean Roth.

&nbsp;In additional to the felony sentencing, she is also a person of interest in a burglary and theft from a home where firearms were taken, according to the sheriff's department.

On Monday, the sheriff's office reported her arrest but did not released details on her capture.

&nbsp;Roth has previous convictions for theft and forgery, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Investigators learned the victim and four other individuals were inside of the home when an unknown suspect fired multiple shots at the house.&nbsp; One of the shots struck the woman causing her injury.&nbsp; No one else was injured.

This was not a random incident, according to Davidson. Police have not reported an arrest or released details on possible suspects.

SALINE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for alleged theft

&nbsp;A police officer on patrol Sunday night in the Salina recognized a white 2013 Hyundai Elantra traveling northbound in the 1900 block of Haskett Avenue as one that had been stolen Thursday in the 400 block of South College Avenue in Salina, according to&nbsp;Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

 The officer believed the driver was Seth Finch, 25, of Salina, who had active felony warrants and who had been reported as a possible suspect in the theft of the car.

The officer saw the car turn into a driveway in the 700 block of Smith Avenue, Forrester said. While the officer was waiting for backup, he observed a female in the front passenger seat and several juveniles in the back seat, he said.

A short time later Finch started the car and drove it through the yard of the residence, through a fence, and into a tree. Finch then jumped out of the car and fled on foot.

The officer made contact with the other occupants of the car, a 34-year-old woman, and three girls, ages 6, 7, and 10, according to Forrester. All four complained of head pain due to the crash. The two youngest girls were not in child safety restraints.

A K9 was deployed to track Finch, and he was located a short time later under a workbench in an open detached garage in the 600 block of Maple Avenue, Forrester said.

Finch was arrested on a felony probation violation warrant out of Saline County and a felony probation violation warrant out of Dickinson County, as well as on requested charges of&nbsp;Fleeing and eluding resulting in a motor vehicle accident, Felony interference with a law enforcement officer, Three counts of aggravated endangerment of a child, Burglary, Possession of stolen property, Damage to property, Driving while suspended, Reckless driving, Two counts of child passenger safety and No proof of insurance.&nbsp;

Finch has previous convictions for obstruction, driving while suspended and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Damage to a seven-foot section of the fence was estimated at $100, Forrester said. There was no damage estimate for the vehicle.

Police catch Kan. felon after crash in stolen car with 3 children

KANSAS CITY (AP) — The December death of a 2-year-old girl in Kansas City has been ruled a homicide, according to police.

Police said Stevie Osborn died Dec. 23 from injuries that officials have not detailed.

The homicide determination was made Feb. 20 following a two-month investigation, police spokesman Sgt. Jacob Becchina said. The newspaper reported it only recently learned of the child’s death after a reporter contacted police to verify the city’s number of homicides for 2019.

Officers and medics were called to an apartment the morning of Dec. 23 for a medical emergency, Becchina said, and first responders found the child unresponsive inside the apartment. She was taken to a hospital, where she later died.

Police have identified a person of interest in the case, but no arrests or charges have been made, Becchina said.
