WYANDOTTE COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) arrested a former Bonner Springs Police Department (BSPD) detective Wednesday following a misconduct investigation.

Just before 2p.m., KBI agents executed an arrest warrant for Kyle P. Rector, 39, of Kansas City, Kansas, near Parallel Parkway and Village West Parkway in Kansas City, Kansas.

On Jan. 28, 2026, the BSPD requested the KBI investigate a former detective after he was suspected to have used department resources to monitor and stalk his spouse while on duty. Rector’s employment was terminated Jan. 26.

During the investigation, child sexual abuse material was also discovered.

Rector was arrested on charges of stalking, three counts of breach of privacy, five counts of sexual exploitation of a child, two counts of unlawful acts concerning computers, and five counts of official misconduct. Formal charges are pending.

Following his arrest, Rector was booked into the Wyandotte County Detention Center.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic senators pressed the U.S. government’s top intelligence official at annual worldwide threats hearings Wednesday about&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/iran">the war with Iran</a>, including whether she had advised&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">President Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;that Tehran was likely to block the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/strait-hormuz-iran-energy-war-5b60e82ef2fc68e2b43aa570a32404dd">Strait of Hormuz</a>, a crucial passageway for oil and gas from the Persian Gulf, if attacked.

<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/tulsi-gabbard">Tulsi Gabbard</a>, the director of national intelligence, repeatedly deflected questions about the intelligence she had offered the Republican president. That exasperated Democrats who tried to use a rare public forum to extract answers about the widening conflict in the Middle East.

She sidestepped when asked by Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, whether she had advised Trump that Iran would attack Gulf nations and shut down the strait if the country was targeted by U.S. strikes.

“I have not and won’t divulge internal conversations. I will say that those of us within the intelligence community continue to provide the president with all of the best objective intelligence available to inform his decisions,” she said.

Trump has urged allies to help safeguard the waterway and ease a chokepoint on the region’s oil exports. He complained on Tuesday that NATO and most other American allies have rejected his calls.

The annual congressional hearings involving the most senior intelligence officials are taking place at a time of scrutiny over the U.S. military campaign in the Middle East and heightened concerns about terrorism at home after recent attacks at a Michigan synagogue and Virginia university.

The focus was on the war, and among the issues expected to be raised was reporting that outdated intelligence likely led to the U.S. firing a missile that hit&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-minab-girls-school-airstrike-us-israel-c3095dc9729881b567277a1c5c47efb2">an elementary school in Iran</a>&nbsp;and killed more than 165 people. The outdated targeting data was reported to have come from the Defense Intelligence Agency, whose director, Lt. Gen. James H. Adams, was to testify. The White House says the strike is under investigation.

The hearings, which continue in Thursday in the House, are also likely to delve into the administration's internal debate over the war,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-iran-war-kent-resignation-e2e17a76d79617a68370f076c0291208">given the resignation this week of Joe Kent</a>&nbsp;as director of the National Counterterrorism Center. Kent said Tuesday he could not “in good conscience” back the war and did not agree that Iran posed an imminent threat to the United States.

Hours later, Gabbard, whose office oversaw Kent’s work, wrote on social media that it was up to Trump to decide whether Iran posed a threat. She did not mention her own views of the strikes and asserted at the outset of the hearing that she intended to deliver the perspectives of the intelligence agencies, as opposed to her own viewpoints.

Trump has sought to distance himself from Kent. CIA Director John Ratcliffe tried to do the same Wednesday when he was asked whether intelligence supported Kent's assessment that Iran was not an imminent threat.

"“The intelligence reflects the contrary,” Ratcliffe said.

Gabbard's presence at a domestic legal search questioned

Apart from Iran, Gabbard was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/fbi-georgia-elections-fulton-county-2020-ballots-e0eb5970169ade6f775e317f7fa12d5e">pressed on her presence at an FBI search in January</a>&nbsp;of an election hub in Fulton County, Georgia, where agents seized voter data from the 2020 presidential election. Her appearance at a domestic law enforcement operation raised eyebrows given that Gabbard's office is meant to focus squarely on foreign threats.

Warner said it was “an organized effort to misuse her national security powers to interfere in domestic politics and potentially provide a pretext for the president’s unconstitutional efforts to seize control of the upcoming elections.”

Gabbard responded that she was present for the search at the request of the president but did not participate. But she continued to tangle with Warner, who at one point told her: “If you want to ask the questions, you should have stayed in Congress."

Also under scrutiny is Kash Patel's leadership of the FBI. He was making his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/olympics-hockey-fbi-director-kash-patel-8eb9ff9fcdf6ecd605643860fd1c18bf">first public appearance on Capitol Hill</a>&nbsp;since video surfaced last month showing him partying with members of the U.S. men's hockey team after their gold medal win at the Winter Olympics.

Patel has fired dozens of agents in his first year on the job, raising concerns about an exodus of national security experience at a time when the United States is confronting an elevated terrorism threat.

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Three suspects accused in the drug overdose death of a 15-year-old Kansas girl were back in court Monday for a preliminary hearing.

Judge Jeffrey Syrios ruled there is enough evidence for Danielle Wheeler, 53; Isaac L. Hord, 24 and Niklas Wiley, 24, to face a trial in the drug overdose death of 15-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cozine.com/obituaries/kennedy-herren" target="_blank">Kennedy Herren</a>, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In October, Wheeler was charged with&nbsp; involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment in Herren's death. Hord and Wiley were both charged with first-degree murder and aggravated endangering a child. Wiley is also facing charges of criminal sodomy, sexual exploitation of a child and aggravated indecent liberties with a child, according to the district attorney's office.

On September 14, police responded to the report of a deceased 15-year-old in Wichita, according to a media release from police. The investigation determined the death of Kennedy Herren was the result of a drug overdose.

Since then, Wichita police overdose analyst worked to pursue justice and ensure accountability for the people responsible for this senseless death.&nbsp;

On October 15,&nbsp;K-9 officers arrested 24-year-old Isaac L. Hord and on October 19 they arrested 24-year-old Niklas Wiley in connection with this case. Wheeler was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on October 22, according to online jail records. She met the requirement for bond and is no longer in custody.

When officers attempted to arrest Pollard he resisted. During the arrest, a detective suffered a serious injury to his face. EMS transported the detective to a local hospital. The injury is not considered life-threatening.

Kansas police detective's face injured during arrest

SEDGWICK COUNTY— A suspect accused of sneaking into a school and making unauthorized with a 13-year-old girl made his first court appearance in the case on Monday.&nbsp;

Michael D. Arnold, 36, was charged with stalking, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.&nbsp; He remains jailed on a $50,000 bond, according to online jail records.

Police have arrested Arnold after investigating two incidents at Gordon Parks Academy,&nbsp;2201 E 25th Street N. Wichita, in which he entered the school and made unauthorized contact with a 13-year-old girl, according to a media release from Wichita Police.

The first incident happened around 9:30 a.m. Monday, March 9, at Gordon Parks Academy. Investigators learned Arnold gained access to the building and had contact with the 13-year-old girl speaking with her without parental authorization.

The second incident happened Tuesday, March 10, when Arnold returned to the school entered the building where school staff told him to leave immediately and called police.

Detectives with the Wichita Police Department’s Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit worked the case and took Arnold into custody March 12.

USD 259 has banned Arnold from all district schools.

Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said, “Our concern is first and foremost with this young girl and her family. This incident is deeply troubling, and I know it has also caused concern throughout the school community and across Wichita. Any situation involving the safety of a child demands our full attention. I am grateful for the officers whose work brought this man into custody. I want the family, the school, and the public to know that our Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit and our entire department remains committed to protecting children and ensure the individual involved in this incident is held accountable.”

Kan. man faces a judge for 'unauthorized contact' with student at school

WICHITA, Kan. - Police arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with the Sunday night homicide of a 16-year-old Wichita boy.

Just after 9p.m. police responded to the 1100 block of S. Webb Road in Wichita after reports of a shooting, according to a media release.

When officers arrived, they found the teen in a vehicle with a gunshot wound to his upper body. EMS took him to a hospital, where he later died.

The preliminary investigation indicates there was a disturbance between the 16-year-old suspect and the victim, during which a shot was fired. The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived.

Officers secured the scene while homicide investigators, K-9 officers and additional personnel processed evidence and followed leads. Through those efforts, investigators identified and arrested the boy.

The boy was booked into the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center on a requested charge of second-degree murder.

Police will present the case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office.

 16-year-old Kansas boy accused of killing another teen

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — A Utah woman who wrote a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/utah-kouri-richins-husbands-death-hearing-83201ae3753e1fd53457b9215c13b231">children’s book about coping with grief</a>&nbsp;after her husband’s death was convicted of aggravated murder in his death by poisoning him with fentanyl.

Jurors on Monday also found Kouri Richins guilty of fraudulently claiming insurance benefits after the death of Eric Richins in March 2022 at their home outside the ski town of Park City.

Prosecutors say Kouri Richins slipped five times the lethal dose of the synthetic opioid into a cocktail that he drank. They say Richins was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kouri-richins-murder-trial-opening-statements-55949a453ff23ac67f776058c0718fcd">$4.5 million in debt</a>&nbsp;and falsely believed that when her husband died, she would inherit his estate worth more than $4 million. They also say she was planning a future with another man she was seeing on the side.

After her husband’s death, Richins self-published a children’s book about grief to help her sons and other kids cope with the loss of a parent.

She was also convicted of other felony charges, including an attempted murder charge in what authorities alleged was another effort to poison her husband weeks earlier on Valentine’s Day with a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kouri-richins-murder-husband-utah-author-74ab4248df5085d041e9c2001e147a6b">fentanyl-laced sandwich</a>&nbsp;that made him break out in hives and black out.

Richins’ defense attorney said Eric Richins was addicted to painkillers and had asked his wife to procure opioids for him. Kouri Richins, however, told police earlier in a video that her husband had no history of illicit drug use.

“She wanted to leave Eric Richins but did not want to leave his money,” said Summit County prosecutor Brad Bloodworth.

Richins had pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The most serious charge — aggravated murder — carries a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

What was scheduled to be a five-week trial was cut short last week when Richins waived her right to testify, and her legal team abruptly rested its case without calling any witnesses. Richins’ attorneys said they were confident that prosecutors did not produce enough evidence over the past three weeks to convict her of murder.

“They haven't done their job, and now they want you to make inferences based on paper-thin evidence. They want you to do their job for them. Tell them, ‘No,’” defense attorney Wendy Lewis urged the jury on Monday.

Prosecutors said Richins, a real estate agent focused on flipping houses, was deep in debt and planning a future with another man she was seeing on the side. She had opened numerous life insurance policies on her husband without his knowledge, with benefits totaling about $2 million, prosecutors alleged.

They showed the jury text messages between Richins and Robert Josh Grossman, the man with whom she was allegedly having an affair, in which she fantasized about leaving her husband, gaining millions in a divorce and marrying Grossman.

The internet search history from Richins’ phone included “what is a lethal.dose.of.fetanayl (sic),” “luxury prisons for the rich America” and “if someone is poisned (sic) what does it go down on the death certificate as,” a digital forensic analyst testified.

Bloodworth replayed for the jury a clip of Richins’ 911 call from the night of her husband’s death. That’s “not ‘the sound of a wife becoming a widow,’” he said, quoting the defense’s opening statement. “It’s the sound of a wife becoming a black widow.”

Lewis responded that the prosecution “looks at facts one way and sees a witch, but if you look at those facts another way, you see a widow.”

Richins listened to the prosecution’s presentation with a furrowed brow and whispered with her attorneys.

Give us the details that will ensure Kouri gets convicted'

The defense focused on trying to discredit the prosecution's star witness, Carmen Lauber, a housekeeper for the family who claimed to have sold Richins fentanyl on multiple occasions.

Lewis argued Lauber did not deal fentanyl and was motivated to lie for legal protection. Lauber said in early interviews that she never dealt the synthetic opioid, but later said she did after investigators informed her that Eric Richins died of a fentanyl overdose, the defense noted.

Richins had asked Lauber for “the Michael Jackson stuff," which Bloodworth said likely refers to the drug combination that killed the singer.

“She knows she wants it because it is lethal,” he argued.

The housekeeper was already in a drug court program as an alternative to incarceration on other charges when authorities arrested her in connection with the Richins case, investigators said. She had also violated some conditions of drug court.

The defense showed a video of law enforcement warning Lauber that they could pull her drug court deal and that she could face a lengthy prison sentence.

“Give us the details that will ensure Kouri gets convicted of murder,” a man in the video said.

Lauber was granted immunity for her cooperation in the case. She testified that she felt a need to “step up and take accountability of my part in this.”

Children’s book becomes a tool for prosecutors

Shortly before her arrest in May 2023, Richins self-published the book “Are You with Me?” The promoted it on local TV and radio stations, which prosecutors have pointed to in arguing that Richins planned the killing and tried to cover it up.

Summit County Sheriff’s detective Jeff O’Driscoll, the lead investigator on the case, testified that Richins paid a ghostwriting company to write the book for her.

O’Driscoll said the sheriff’s office received an anonymous package shortly after Richins’ arrest that contained the book and a note: “There are two sides to every story. This is a true Kouri, a devoted wife and adoring mother. Thought you should know.”

Investigators later learned from Amazon that Richins’ mother sent the package.

Prosecutors showed the jury excerpts of a letter found in Richins’ jail cell that they said appears to outline testimony for her mother and brother. In the six-page letter, Richins instructs her brother to tell her former attorney that Eric Richins confided in him about getting fentanyl from Mexico and “gets high every night."

Defense attorneys have said the letter contains a fictional story Richins had been working on. They have argued that Eric Richins was addicted to painkillers and asked his wife to procure opioids for him.

However, Richins told police on the night of her husband's death that he had no history of illicit drug use, according to body camera footage shown in court.

SEDGWICK COUNTY— Law enforcement have released the name of the pedestrian who died in a hit-and-run crash early Sunday morning near the Sedgwick County Zoo.

Adam Wayne Condit, 29, of Wichita, died after he was struck by a pickup truck shortly after midnight March 15 in the 5800 block of West Windmill Road, according to Sheriff's Department spokesman Branden Stitt.

Sheriff releases name of victim in fatal Kansas hit-and-run

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Three suspects accused in the drug overdose death of a 15-year-old Kansas girl are due back in court Monday.

Danielle Wheeler, 53; Isaac L. Hord, 24 and Niklas Wiley, 24, are scheduled for a preliminary hearing in&nbsp;Judge Jeffrey Syrios courtroom, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In October, Wheeler was charged with&nbsp; involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment in the death of 15-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cozine.com/obituaries/kennedy-herren" target="_blank">Kennedy Herren</a>, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. Hord and Wiley have both been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated endangering a child. Wiley is also facing charges of criminal sodomy, sexual exploitation of a child and aggravated indecent liberties with a child, according to the district attorney's office.

Both men remain in custody in the Sedgwick Count Jail. Hord on a one-million dollar bond and Wiley on bonds totaling over $1,250,000 according to online jail records.

Preliminary hearing for 3 in Kansas teen's overdose death

MIAMI COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas woman on multiple allegations after an alleged violent attack on her mother.

Just before 11a.m. Saturday, police were dispatched to 601 17th Street in Osawatomie where a woman had reportdly fled to home after being struck in the head and body multiple times with a baseball bat,&nbsp;according to Police Chief David Stuteville.

The victim was identified as 68-year-old Tina L. Day and the alleged suspect her 50-year-old daughter Anegela M. Platt.

Miami County EMS transported Day to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Meanshile, Platt locked herself inside the home and would not respond to police.

After multiple attempts to get Platt to exit the home, an officer finally convinced Platt to step outside onto an elevated deck at the rear of the home.&nbsp; As the officer and Platt were talking, two officers including Chief Stuteville made their up the side of the deck near the residence, as to be able to keep Platt from being able to go back inside. Once on the deck, Platt was safely taken into custody without futher incident.

After getting a search warrant, officers collected evidence related to the reported assault of Mrs. Day.

Platt was transported to the Miami County Jail where she is being held on requested charges of aggravated domestic battery and criminal damage to property.

Kan. woman accused of baseball bat attack on her mother

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations.

Just before 8a.m. March 9, police&nbsp;were alerted to a burglary in progress in the 1100 block of Hubbard Street in Great Bend, according to a media release.

 The reporting party advised that a woman that he did not know had entered his residence and taken several items, including a firearm. Officers began to search for the suspect with the description provided by the reporting party. 

A short time later, an officer located the suspect in the 1100 block of Holland Street in the alley way. Officers gave several commands to the suspect, who failed to comply.&nbsp; K9 Niko was deployed to subdue the suspect. 

After a successful apprehension, officers located the stolen firearm and several other stolen items. Officers arrested 41-year-old Crystal Caruthers on requested charges of Aggravated Burglary, Possession of Stolen Property, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, and Felony Interference with Law Enforcement.  Caruthers was treated for her minor injuries by the Great Bend Fire Department Emergency Medical Services.

KANSAS CITY – A Missouri man has been indicted with two counts of willful transmission of national defense information.&nbsp; The indictment was returned by a grand jury under seal and was made public this week after the arrest and initial appearance of the defendant, according to the United State's Attorney.

Seth Chambers, 35, a former United States Marine Corps. Intelligence Analyst, was employed as a civilian contractor and stationed in Iraq during the time frame alleged in the indictment.&nbsp;The indictment states that, as part of his duties, he held a security clearance that authorized him to view classified material up to a TOP SECRET level and therefore had access to national defense and classified information.

According to court documents, on two separate occasions, the defendant willfully transmitted SECRET level documents to two separate individuals who were not entitled or authorized to receive it.&nbsp; 

The first transmission occurred on Dec. 10, 2022, when the defendant transmitted a white paper containing verbatim and near verbatim excerpts from classified U.S. government documents and was sent to an individual in Maryland.&nbsp; The second transmission of a document containing verbatim and near verbatim excerpts from classified U.S. government documents occurred on April 20, 2023, and was sent to an individual believed to be in the People’s Republic of China.

If convicted, under federal statutes, Chambers is subject to a sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison without parole on each count. The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes, as the sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Kelleher and Trial Attorneys Nicolas Hunter and Sean O’Dowd of the National Security Division’s Counterintelligence and Export Control Section. It was investigated by FBI Kansas City Field Office.&nbsp;

JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.&nbsp;

Just after 3a.m.&nbsp;March 9, a Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop of a Chevy Malibu for a traffic violation near U.S. Highway 75 and 150th Road, according to Sheriff Tim Morse. The passenger of the vehicle was identified as Toni Jo Messenger, 48, of Keokuk, Iowa. 

During the course of the traffic stop, a Jackson County Sheriff K-9 detected the odor of illegal drugs or narcotics inside the vehicle. A probable cause search resulted in the discovery of illegal drugs or narcotics.

Messenger was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail for requested charge that include Possession of opiate, opium, narcotic, or certain stimulant (methamphetamine),&nbsp;Possession of controlled substance and&nbsp;Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas woman accused of sex crimes is due back in court Friday

Savana King, 31, is scheduled to attend a preliminary hearing&nbsp;in Judge Kathleen Watson's courtroom, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

The judge will determine if there was enough evidence to send the case to trial.&nbsp;

On January 29, an 18-year-old woman reported that she had been sexually assaulted by her former softball coach Savanah King over several years, between 2021 and 2024, before she reached the age of consent, according to Wichita Police Officer Juan Rebolledo.

Police arrested King on requested charges of aggravated indecent liberties with a child; fondling, criminal sodomy with a child under the age of 14 and unlawful sexual relations, according to Sedgwick County arrest records. After spending a weekend in jail, King met the requirement of a $250,00 bond and was released from jail.

OSAGE COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a standoff at a rural Kansas home.

Just after 7p.m. Wednesday,&nbsp;deputies with the Osage County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence in rural Burlingame regarding a report of a possible barricaded subject who was reportedly involved in a verbal domestic disturbance where shots had been fired, according to Sheriff Chris Wells.

Deputies responded to the scene and began working to safely resolve the situation. After approximately four hours of attempting to make contact with the individual inside the residence, Christopher Vales, 41, of Burlingame was safely taken into custody without further incident.

 A man, later identified as 31-year-old Casey Eastman of Topeka, set his clothing on fire. The Topeka Fire Department, American Medical Response and Topeka Police Behavioral Health Unit also responded to the scene.

Kan. man set his clothes on fire inside police headquarters

&nbsp;JACKSON COUNTY, Kan.– Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

Just afater 7p.m. March 6, Sheriff’s Deputies, with the assistance of the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, arrested Charles Weston Alford, 40, of Topeka, on a Jackson County District Court Warrant in the 3400 block of NE Happy Hollow Road, according to Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse.

Alford was arrested in connection with illegal methamphetamine sales, which allegedly took place during a multi-month drug investigation earlier this year in collaboration with the Kansas Bureau of Investigations.

Alford was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of Distribute methamphetamine, no drug tax stamp for controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
