As the winter chill grips Kansas, we all seek the comfort of a warm car in the cold mornings. However, it's crucial to remain vigilant about our vehicle's security.

 Important Notice: Recently, we've noticed a worrying trend – an increase in the theft of vehicles that have been left running and unlocked to warm up. Unfortunately, this practice, while understandable during our cold winters, makes these vehicles prime targets for criminals. There have been four reported theft cases of this type.

Safety Tip: If you need to warm up your car, please use a remote start system or a spare key. This way, you can keep your vehicle locked while it warms up, significantly reducing the risk of theft.

Junction City police confirm their poultry pursuit has come to an end.

The elusive chicken that's been ruffling feathers around town has been safely apprehended!&nbsp; Animal control officer Becky Meneffe managed to catch this feathered friend without a single scratch on her.

Police said that they're thrilled to report that she's now pecking around happily in a loving home outside the city limits, where she can cluck to her heart's content.

As amusing as this little escapade was, it's important to remember that owning chickens within city limits is not allowed. Leave the chicken rearing to the more rural areas.

As to the chicken's name that determination has not been made.

--&nbsp;Geary County Schools USD 475 will have a two-hour delay on Friday, Jan. 19. Schools will open two hours late, and bus routes will be delayed by two hours.&nbsp; Opening times follow:

Eric Coffman will serve as Geary County Sheriff for the remainder of a current unexpired term.

Coffman was elected by the Geary County Republican Central Committee during a convention Thursday evening at the Geary County Senior Center. There were no other candidates successfully nominated.

The Committee's election now goes to Governor Kelly for approval. If she does not act within seven days he automatically becomes sheriff.&nbsp;

Serving as Undersheriff since 2019, Coffman is filling the office of Sheriff vacated by Dan Jackson who is retiring Jan. 19

In a brief statement prior to the vote, Coffman outlined a few goals he wants to set forth for the Geary County Sheriff’s Office. The first was to complete the CALEA Accreditation.&nbsp;The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. is a credentialing authority, based in the United States, whose primary mission is to accredit public safety agencies, namely law enforcement agencies, training academies, communications centers, and campus public safety agencies.

Secondly he wants to strengthen relations with other departments and community organizations. Continuing to work on recruiting and retaining staff in the Geary County Detention Center was also mentioned in addition to taking a proactive approach to the mental health and wellness of those in law enforcement.

Coffman thanked the Central Committee for electing him and said he would not let them down. Approximately 60 people attended the convention including members of the Republican Central Committee and the general public.

Coffman has named Capt. David Gilbert to serve as Undersheriff.

Republican Central Committee elects a new sheriff

Junction City Manager Allen Dinkel has been notified that the Veterans Administration wants to build a larger clinic facility in Junction City because more space is needed. Services are currently provided at the Lieutenant General Richard J. Seitz Community-Based Outpatient Clinic at 1169 Southwind Drive.

The VA wants a building of up to 50,000 square feet. Developers are wanting to look at city owned property. Potential locations include the former call center building adjacent to South Spring Valley Road and a stretch of property near Rucker Road south of the existing Dollar General store in that northwest area of town. Other possible private locations could surface in the future.

Dinkel indicated it might be 2027 or 2028 before the project could occur. He briefed city commissioners this week and expects to bring more details back to the governing body in the near future.

The Junction City Blue Jays survive and advance in the Spring Hill Invitational Basketball Tournament as they defeated Gardner-Edgerton 67-51.&nbsp; It was another sensational performance from junior Jackson Austin, who had 24 points, courtesy of 8 three-pointers.&nbsp; Two more Blue Jays scored in double-digits - sophomore Lovell Autry had 15 points, and Larkin Turner had 14.&nbsp; 

The Blue Jays led the whole game from start to finish, advancing to 9-1 on the season.&nbsp; 

With the win, the Blue Jays will play Olathe South in the championship game Friday night, scheduled for 8:15p.m.

Geary County Treasurer Sherri Childs has announced that tag renewals for heavy truck and trailer owners are due by the end of February. The Kansas Department of Revenue sends renewal notices in December, but the Treasurer's Office was just notified those notices will be delayed until at least February 1st.

You still have options to renew before the end of February:

1. You can find and print your renewal notice online by visiting https://mvs2.dmv.kdor.ks.gov/PrintRenewals/ then mail it in with payment and proof of insurance. You can also come into our office with your plate number or your last registration along with proof of insurance (trailers require proof of insurance for the vehicle pulling the trailer).

All trucks with a declared weight over 54,000 lbs. require the form 2290.

Marketing Geary County is one focus for the CVB

Geary County Sheriff Dan Jackson will retire on Friday. He is wrapping up a career that includes a stint as sheriff since 2019, additional years with the Sheriff's Office and law enforcement, plus a total of 25 years in the military with that time split between the Navy and the Marine Corps. Jackson was appointed sheriff in 2019 to fill an unexpired term, and then elected to a term in that office in 2020.

During his time in the sheriff's role Jackson formed a command staff that focused leadership in three main divisions including administrative and technical services, operations and special operations. "I'm very comfortable with where the Geary County Sheriff's Office is at this point in time."

Other accomplishments included formation of a marine unit, and along with the Junction City Fire Department a dive rescue and recovery team.

The Junction City Blue Jays scored a season high 92 points while holding Sumner Academy to 43 points in the first round of the 2024 Spring Hill Invitational Basketball Tournament.&nbsp; Despite nearly a 2-week hiatus due to weather, the Blue Jays controlled from start to finish and saw multiple players in double digits.&nbsp;&nbsp;Junior Jackson Austin lead the Blue Jays with 25 points, while junior Ja'Twaan Williams had 17.  Also, Tre Ruffin scored 12 points and Lovell Autry finished with 11.

The Blue Jays advance to the semi-finals and will take on Gardner- Edgerton at 6:30 Thursday night.&nbsp;&nbsp;With the win, Junction City advances to 8 - 1 on the year.

The possibility of converting Spin City into more of an event center but still retaining facilities for youth activity, has surfaced in Junction City. Mayor Pat Landes noted that he was approached by a citizen unhappy with the level and cost of service at the convention center in Junction City. There was a question about whether the City would consider making Spin City ( 915 South Washington ) into more of an event space. "I think we need more things like this in our town," said Landes.

The mayor&nbsp; talked with the city manager about getting a small group together, perhaps with an architect, to throw some ideas out and determine what a project would cost.

There could still be space for kids including roller skating but perhaps a floor where you could also have a nice dinner. Landes noted that there is already a good sound system that could be used for dinners and dances. There might have to be some discussions with the nearby JC Naz Church about an agreement for more parking for an upgraded Spin City.

Landes called the Spin City facility a hidden gem with potential.

Junction City Finance Director Lindsay Miller will head the group working on the project.

The Senior Center has been reserved Thursday evening for the convention to recommend the next Geary County Sheriff.

The convention hosted by the Geary County Republican Central Committee chaired by Kathy Tremont begins at 7:00pm.&nbsp;

The procedure at the convention includes election by the committee of a sheriff to finish the remainder of the term currently being served by Dan Jackson, who is retiring on Jan.19. The name of the recommended candidate goes to the Governor, who has seven days to approve the appointment. If the governor does not&nbsp; take action the candidate chosen by the committee automatically becomes sheriff.

Republican Central Committee Convention to elect a sheriff 

The Geary County Sheriff's Department has announced that there will be a reception hosted for retiring Geary County Sheriff Dan Jackson from Noon to 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19. The event will be hosted at the Geary County Emergency Management Office, 236 E. Eighth St.

A presentation will be made at 12:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Sheriff Jackson announced his retirement last month and his last day in office will be Jan. 19. He took the office of Sheriff in May 2019 and was elected in 2020.

BOE Jan. 11 meeting highlights

TOPEKA, Kan. — According to a social media post from Kansas State Rep. Paul Waggoner, the Republican tax package is due on the floor this week at the statehouse. 

An advocate for small businesses in Topeka, Dan Murray with NFIB's Kansas chapter, talked to Hutch Post earlier this week about the importance of tax relief to small business owners.

"We know that property taxes are the most reviled of the taxes that we have," Murray said. "Certainly, we'd love to see some of that taken care of. The Governor, in her tax proposal, calls for what the state can do, in terms of property tax reform. We do collect 20 mills for school funding. The first $40,000 of that is exempt, so the first $40,000 of valuations for residential properties are exempt. Her proposal calls for up to the first $100,000 to be exempt. I think that's something we could embrace and look towards. Most small business owners file at the individual level."

Waggoner said the proposal includes

a 5.25% flat rate on all income.  The current proposal does address property tax relief (through raising to $80,000 from $40,000 the property value threshold) and ending the food sales tax on June 30th. This would be over $500 million in tax relief, as proposed.

Just before 4p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for theft in the 8200 block of South Port Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 72-year-old man reported an unknown suspect stole his wallet he had accidentally left behind on a counter. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $800.

RCPD: Man lost $800 when his wallet was stolen

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new allegations after an arrest.

Just before noon Tuesday, police arrested 39-year-old Curtis Colley, Jr., of Grandview Plaza in the 1000 block of South Seth Child Road in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 Colley was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for distribution of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia with the intent to manufacture/plant/cultivate a controlled substance, distribution of opiate/opium/narcotic/stimulant/heroin, and possession. Colley remains jailed on a bond of $10,000.

He has previous convictions for criminal threat, aggravated burglary, aggravated intimidation of a witness, and for drugs and for arranging sale/purchase using communication facility, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.
