Kathy Tremont is running for election to the Second District seat on the Geary County Commission. She is challenging incumbent Alex Tyson for the seat.

Tremont wrote: To the Citizens of Geary County:

It is important to respond to and clarify some of the accusatory remarks made by my opponent regarding my handling of funds as the former County Treasurer. County financial responsibilities are set up within state statutes to provide checks and balances for county taxpayer dollars. As County Treasurer, I was in charge of tax collection, deposits, and distributions in addition to the Motor Vehicle Department. I was an agent for the State of Kansas. It would be helpful for others (including some current commissioners), to understand the duties of the Treasurer’s Office and the County Clerk’s Office, which are different in function. Voters deserve better than this current climate of nasty politics from those who should know better. Instead, I have to work to correct statements that Commissioners Giordano and Tyson made that are inaccurate, misleading, and unprofessional.

Mr. Tyson claims I “operated the budget with 24 outside accounts, with 18 of them not on any financial reports.” Statutorily, and MOST importantly, the Treasurer is not responsible for operating the County budget; I was responsible for my (Treasurer’s) budget and had no difficulties with it. These “outside accounts” had been audited through 2016 with no issues; a different firm audited from 2017 through 2020, and then yet another, in 2021. There was a period, 2017 through 2020, that they were not picked up for audit. I don’t know why they weren’t; auditors choose what they want to audit, and it is not the responsibility of the County Treasurer to tell them what to audit. An audit is a tool to communicate findings to the governing body and make recommendations that improve the county’s operation. It is their opinion, and 30 other auditors may not find the same thing or look at the same particular items. This is not to say the accounts don’t need to be accounted for; department heads were responsible for providing the information anytime they opened an account, as I was responsible for pledging the securities to protect our funds in the bank.

Commissioner Giordano references a paragraph from a management letter, presumably regarding the 2020 audit, which states: “The County Treasurer’s office does properly reconcile total cash daily, and then again monthly, with respect to the amount of cash in the funds compared to the total amounts in the bank accounts.” However, the County’s accounting system balances for individual banking deposit assets are not reconciled to the specific general ledger accounts intended to track each balance.” Please note that it says, “The County Treasurer’s office does properly reconcile....” The rest refers to the County’s accounting system, which is the office's responsibility for the operating budget, not the Treasurer’s Office. I do not profess to be perfect, but I am confident in my competence as the former Treasurer.

In closing, I will leave the voters to consider: Commissioners Tyson and Giordano stress the savings the finance director has made for Geary County. This position is currently the 3rd highest paid county employee at $131,000 a year---$1.3M over a ten year period, plus a $354,000 office budget. (This position/budget was created in 2022.) I do not know how we can continually sustain the budget increases. I apparently have missed the savings on my tax bill.

You have trusted me for over 40 years, and I hope you can trust me as we move forward. I decided to run for commissioner to represent the folks of Geary County, I did not sign up to be publicly humiliated. You can expect these things at the national level but not locally in a smaller community. How do we recover from broken friendships and distrust in these elections

While I cannot comment on her character, her actions and records are pertinent.

Hildebrand Farms Dairy of Geary County is the recipient of a To the Stars Award from the Kansas Department of Commerce. This is the North Central Regional Award for Agribusiness.

Hildebrand Farms Dairy was founded in 1920. It includes more than 1,800 acres, cattle and in 2008 a bottling plant was developed. Milk and ice cream are among the multiple products produced and distributed.

October had above average temperatures, well above average temperatures. In fact, only six days during the month had average or below average daily high temperatures. The area was also well on its way to being a top ten driest October before welcome rains rolled through on the 30th.

The average daily high during October was 77.8, 9.9 degrees above normal. The average overnight low was 49.3, 4.3 degrees above normal. This gave us a monthly mean temperature of 63.5, 7.1 degrees above the average October mean temperature. This places October 2024 as the fourth warmest October on record. The hottest October was in 1963 when the monthly mean temperature was 69.0 degrees. 

The highest temperature for the month was 95 degrees on the 5th. The coldest temperature for the month was the frosty morning low of 28 on the 16th. There were four new temperature records set in October. The high of 90 on the 24th broke the old record of 84 set in 2011. The high of 86 on the 28th broke the old record of 83 which was set in 2016. The overnight low of 64 on the 29th and 70 on the 30th set new record high low temperatures. The previous record for the 29th was 61, set in 1961. For the 30th the previous record was 62 set in 2016. The morning low of 28 on the 16th brought the 2024 growing season officially to an end. This was about a week earlier than the 30-year average first frost date of October 22nd. 

Since the last frost of spring was several weeks earlier than normal, we still managed a growing season of 203 days, 9 days longer than the 30-year average of 194 days. The latest first fall frost was November 13, 2021. The earliest first fall frost was September 17, 1981. 1981 was an unusual year in that it had a very late last spring frost date of May 11th which resulted in a growing season of only 129 days, two months shorter than the average growing season.&nbsp;

After having the fourth driest September on record, the first three weeks of October were not looking much better with zero rain being recorded. That finally broke in the last ten days of the month and the area officially received 1.77 inches for October. While this was still below the long-term average of 2.48 inches, it was a very welcome change and helped lower some of the wildfire concerns that had plagued the county during the month. 

Year to date we have received 29.06 inches, slightly below the normal year to date total of 30.98 inches. The wettest October on record was in 1941 when 12.12 inches of rain flooded the area. The driest October on record was in 1938 when 0.02 inches of rain was all that could be tallied in the rain gauges.

November brings autumn into full focus and normally shows us that winter isn’t too far away. Average daily highs in November begin at 60 and by the end of the month are down to 48 degrees. Overnight lows at the start of the month are a crisp 38 and by the end of the month have dropped to a frosty 27 degrees. November also starts our “dry season” with average rainfall of 1.42 inches (November through February all have average monthly precipitation of less than two inches.) 

While November snowfall is not unheard of, it is also far from common. Average November snow accumulation is only 1 inch. But if you remember 2023, we managed half a foot of snow on the Sunday following Thanksgiving!&nbsp;

4-H Achievement Celebration

DICKINSON COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a wanted Kansas felon on multiple allegations after a chase and arrest.

Just after 9:30p.m. Sunday, a sheriff's deputy observed a red Chevrolet pickup in the area of East 6th Street and Pine in Solomon, according to Dickinson County Undersheriff&nbsp;Jeff Vaughan.

The pickup was traveling without any lights and failed to stop at a stop sign. The Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop with the vehicle. The driver accelerated and a vehicle pursuit was initiated. The vehicle eventually came to a stop in the area of Old Highway 40 and Deer Road in Dickinson County.

The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody without further incident and identified as Carlito Luis Morales, 34, of Salina. 

It was discovered that Morales had a warrant out of Saline County for his arrest. Morales was transported to the Dickinson County Detention Facility.

Just before 10:30;.m. a Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a call for service regarding damage to property in the 200 Block of West 4th Street in Solomon. It was reported a vehicle earlier in the evening had driven through a yard of a residence, spinning its tires causing damage to the lawn. During the investigation, Morales was developed as the suspect in this case.

Morales is being held in the the Dickinson County Detention Facility for the warrant out of Saline County and requested charges of Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, mIgnition Interlock Device; Operate a vehicle without a required device, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Criminal Damage to Property

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating two suspects on multiple allegations after an incident&nbsp;

Just before 10a.m. Sunday, officers filed a report for theft, criminal damage to property, criminal possession of a weapon by felon, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of opiate, and distribute certain stimulate in the 500 block of McCall Road in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Menards reported a 58-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man took items from a victim and were later found to be in possession of illegal items. Ginger Moore, 58, of Wamego, was arrested on requested charges of theft, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of opiate, and distribute certain stimulate.&nbsp;

Peter Henry, 35, of Salina, was arrested on requested charges of theft, criminal damage to property, criminal possession of a weapon by felon, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of opiate, and distribute certain stimulate. 

&nbsp;Moore and Henry are being held without bond at the Pottawatomie County Jail.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Freightliner semi driven by&nbsp; by Sukhrob Dastanov, 37, Mason, Ohio, was eastbound in the right lane of Interstate 70 near&nbsp;McDowell Creek Road.&nbsp;

 Due to heavy rain, the driver&nbsp; lost control of the semi. It veered left, started to cross the median into the westbound lanes and side-swiped a 2015 GMC Terrain driven by Jalen O&nbsp;Williams-Flanigan, 25, Junction City.

The impact caused SUV to veer right into the north ditch where it struck the embankment and rolled. The semi continued across the westbound lanes before coming to rest partially in the North ditch facing East.

EMS transported&nbsp;Williams-Flanigan and a passenger in the pickup Endia S&nbsp;McNeal 30, Junction City, to Stormont Vail in Junction City.&nbsp;Dastanov and a passenger in the semi were not injured. All four were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

TOPEKA – U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Kansas Director Christy Davis announced that USDA is awarding $1.48 million in grants to Kansas business owners to increase the availability of domestic biofuels. The grants to four Kansas businesses will expand clean energy availability and build economic benefits while combatting climate change.

“Biofuels made here in Kansas are helping to lower costs for Kansas families, strengthen our energy independence, and create new income streams for farmers,” Davis said.

Today’s announcement is part of a larger national announcement which includes projects in 17 other states. The details of Kansas projects are:

· A $475,000 grant will help install eleven E15 dispensers and eleven E85 dispensers at three fueling stations owned by Jump Start Stores Inc. in Wichita, Augusta, and Abilene. This project is expected to increase ethanol sales by 878,400 gallons per year.

· A $285,000 grant will help install two E15 dispensers, two E85 dispensers and one ethanol storage tank for Dara's LLC at a fueling station in Manhattan. This project is expected to increase the amount of ethanol sold by 343,098 gallons per year.

· A $37,500 grant will help install one E15 dispenser for The Randall Farmers Cooperative Union fueling station located in Randall. This project is expected to increase the amount of ethanol sold by 291,880 gallons per year.

· A $683,250 grant will help install 12 E15 dispensers, 12 E85 dispensers, seven B20 dispensers, one ethanol storage tank and one biodiesel storage tank for WWWW Inc. at a fueling station in Colby. This project is expected to increase the amount of biofuel sold by 3,815,401 gallons per year.

The Junction City Blue Jays beat the Topeka Trojans 47-14 on Friday night at Blue Jay Stadium.

After Junction City fumbled the opening kickoff, the Topeka Trojans connected on a 29-yard field goal to lead 3-0. After a back-and-forth first quarter that featured several turnovers, the Blue Jays led 7-3 at the end of one, thanks to a 43-yard touchdown connection between junior quarterback Conrad Gomez and junior wide receiver JaMarcus Vornes.

After Topeka senior Jaden Norman connected on a 27-yard field goal to cut the Blue Jay lead to 7-6, Junction City junior running back Justice Fonoti had a three-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 14-6. Junction City senior kicker Ethan Hileman connected on two field goals late in the first half to give the Blue Jays a 20-6 halftime lead. 

Topeka High punted on its first possession of the second half, and Junction City junior Lovell Autry had an 89-yard punt return for a touchdown that gave the Blue Jays a 27-6 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, the Trojans fumbled, and three plays later, the Blue Jays were back in the endzone on a two-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown. At this point, Junction City led 34-6 and cruised to a 47-14 victory in round one of the playoffs.

The Blue Jays will now travel to Derby, the number one seed in class 6A West, next Friday night for the second round of the playoffs.

This project is a testament to the power of community collaboration, bringing together multiple entities to enhance the recreational facilities available to residents.

The new shelter will provide space for families and community members to gather, have picnics, and participate in various outdoor activities. The project is spearheaded by Quality Play for All, with help from the following partners:

• City of Junction City: Joshua Gray, City Parks Superintendent, and the City Public Works team have provided logistical support and ensured the project meets all city regulations.

• Hutton is donating professional construction services and oversight.

• Students from Kansas State University’s chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America have volunteered their time and skills to assist with the construction.

• USD 475 Career and Technical Education Students local high school students, guided by Career and Technical Education staff members, Kale Katt and Aaron Yoder, will be gaining hands-on experience by participating in the building process.

• Kaw Valley Engineering is providing essential engineering expertise to ensure the shelter is built to the highest standards.

• Foley Equipment is supplying necessary equipment and machinery to facilitate the construction.

“We are thrilled to see this project come to life,” said Angie Greenwood. “It’s a wonderful example of what can be achieved when different sectors of the community come together with a common goal. This shelter will be a valuable addition to our park and a great asset for the residents of Junction City.”

5th Street Park has been a focal point for community activities and improvements. Quality Play for All has previously funded several projects in the park, including the installation of new playground equipment and the recent launch of the Fitness Court at 5th Street Playground, which have enhanced the park’s appeal and usability for families and children1

The construction of the shelter is expected to be completed by November 9&nbsp;with the majority of the work scheduled for Saturday, November 2. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held to celebrate the opening, with details to be announced soon.

Community Collaboration Brings New Park Shelter to Junction City

Junior Optimist International was officially formed in 1988. It is an umbrella organization which links the local Junior Optimist International Clubs and members to others throughout the world. Members can develop leadership and teambuilding skills all while helping communities.

The purpose of the Junior Optimist International (JOI) Clubs is to provide school and community service, improve club members’ sense of kindness, increase awareness for those in need and increase self-esteem. The foundation for all this is found in The Optimist Creed.

There are currently three JOI Clubs in the state of Kansas. One is in Ottawa and the other two are in Junction City. In 2023, the St. Xavier’s Catholic Schools JOI Club was chartered and on November 1, 2024 the Junction City High School Junior Optimist Club was chartered. Both local JOI Clubs are sponsored by the JC Breakfast Optimist Club. Amy Johnson is the facilitator with the St. Xavier’s Catholic Schools JOI Club and Ricardo Gutierrez facilitates the newly formed JCHS JOI Club.

The program originated in the College of Business Administration and is directed by&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://cba.k-state.edu/about/faculty-staff/directory/Law-DelRosso-Olivia.html">Olivia Law-DelRosso</a>, assistant dean and instructor in the business college. It will now include students from the College of Arts and Sciences, led by&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://artsci.k-state.edu/about/dean-office/choma.html">Kimathi Choma</a>, assistant dean.

Scholars learn tools to excel academically, gain exposure to career possibilities and begin networking with Rise Up Partners. During their sophomore year, scholars complete a "mini" internship, which&nbsp;provides them&nbsp;with&nbsp;exposure to career experience&nbsp;and prepares&nbsp;them&nbsp;to&nbsp;be outstanding&nbsp;internship&nbsp;candidates&nbsp;as&nbsp;juniors. The&nbsp;students&nbsp;work with an executive mentor to develop and work toward career goals.&nbsp;They&nbsp;also&nbsp;travel outside of Manhattan to tour businesses, honing their professional skills and expanding their career horizons.

For the final two years of the program, scholars collaborate with career coaches to set goals, participate in mock interviews, revise their resumes, and strategically prepare for applying to internships and jobs. As seniors, they undertake a yearlong project focused on making an impact in an area they are passionate about. Current projects include initiatives to support middle school students who desire to be the first in their families&nbsp;to attend college,&nbsp;to&nbsp;provide resources for underrepresented students in finance, and&nbsp;to&nbsp;raise autism awareness. With these tools, 100% of fully engaged scholars in the program have secured internships and full-time job offers within three months of graduation, Law-DelRosso said.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Last summer, scholars interned or began full-time careers at Barkley, Boys and Girls Club of America, ConocoPhillips, Deloitte, Dairy Farmers of America, Edward Jones, EY, Hormel Foods, Imperial PFS, K-State NIL, Athletics, Koch, KPMG, PWC, Spring Venture Group and the U.S. Arm."

K-State Rise Up student scholar program expands, supporting more students in leadership and career success development

On Friday at 3:59 a.m. the Geary County Sheriff's Department said that Deputies responded to I-70 miler marker 303 west bound for the report of a non-injury two vehicle accident. 

Jeremy Bishop of Wamego was traveling westbound on I-70 in his 2021 Subaru Forrester passing a semi-truck when their vehicles scraped across each other. Enrique Manuel of Louisville, KY was able to safely pull over his 2012 Freightliner Cascadia 125 and meet with Jeremy. Both parties were able to remove their vehicles from scene.

Sheriff's Department works non-injury accident

(JUNCTION CITY, Kan., Nov. 1, 2024) – Stormont Vail Health welcomes Dr. Daniel Regier, a general surgery specialist, to the Flint Hills Campus General Surgery Department. Dr. Regier will provide whole patient care, including surgery, at the Stormont Vail Flint Hills Campus Surgery Center, 1102 St. Marys Rd., Junction City.

Dr. Regier, originally from Nebraska, has a deep connection to the Midwest and a lifelong commitment to serving others. His inspiration comes from his mother, a nurse, and his grandmother, a missionary.

"I enjoy helping others. And I can do that through the gifts I've been given," said Dr. Regier. "That includes helping them with surgery and as well as emotionally and mentally when it comes to making tough decisions - not only about their loved ones, but about their own health."

Dr. Regier pursued his pre-med studies at Chadron State College and earned his medical degree at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at the West Virginia University School of Medicine.

"The best part of my work is creating relationships with patients and having a continued dialogue with them. I discuss not only their medical needs but also their lifestyle, how things are going, and their hobbies and interests. I create a true relationship that allows me to treat them better and increase trust," he said.
