 Dillons Sunflower Showdown Set for Morning Kick

Vehicle-deer crashes can happen any day of the year on Kansas roadways. Across the state, 39% of all single-vehicle crashes in 2024 involved a collision with a deer. The Kansas Department of Transportation reports five people were killed and 674 people were injured in collisions with deer in 2024.

These crashes greatly increase from now until the end of the year because of deer breeding season, with November typically the peak time.

This is why KDOT, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, AAA Kansas and the Kansas Turnpike Authority are joining to raise awareness and help decrease deer-vehicle crashes.

“Serious crashes are more likely to occur when drivers swerve to avoid a deer, as this can lead to loss of vehicle control, departure from the roadway or collisions with oncoming traffic,” said KHP Lieutenant Chad Crittenden. “It is often safer to brake firmly and stay in your lane.”

Shawn Steward, Public Affairs Manager for AAA Kansas, said that in addition to the inconvenience of your vehicle damage, the cost of repairs may put a serious dent in your wallet, especially if you don’t have comprehensive auto insurance coverage.

“AAA insurance statistics show the average claim in Kansas for an animal strike in 2024 was $8,430 – up 103% in just five years,” Steward said. “This is largely due to advanced vehicle technology such as cameras and sensors, driving up the cost of repairs.”

Anyone involved in a collision with a deer or other animal resulting in personal injury or property damage totaling $1,000 or more is required to immediately report the incident to the nearest law enforcement agency.

KDWP prioritizes reducing deer-vehicle collisions in managing the Kansas deer population. However, motorists should be prepared for a higher risk of collisions in the fall, said Levi Jaster, KDWP Big Game Program Coordinator.

“Even in areas with fewer deer, seasonal habitat changes and mating can bring deer onto roads at any time of day or night,” Jaster said. “Drivers should be especially cautious at dawn and dusk and stay attentive in areas with good deer habitat. Slowing down and remaining alert are the best ways to avoid a collision.”

Roadway safety officials suggest drivers: •&nbsp;&nbsp;Be watchful at dawn and dusk - deer are more active and they seldom travel alone. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Be alert and reduce speeds near wooded areas and near water sources. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Vehicle-deer collisions can happen on any rural or urban roadway – the signs show areas where high numbers have occurred in the past. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Do not swerve, this can cause motorists to veer into oncoming traffic, run off the road, hit objects or overturn. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Use bright headlights when there is no oncoming traffic – the deer’s eyes often reflect. •&nbsp;&nbsp;If possible, move the vehicle to the roadway’s shoulder after a collision and call law enforcement – KHP dispatch at *47, turnpike users at *KTA or local law enforcement at 911. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Put the vehicle’s hazard lights on and keep your seat belt fastened. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Contact your insurance company to report damage.

Motorists encouraged to be on the lookout for deer

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a burglary at a home in Manhattan.

Just after 1p.m. Sunday, officers filed a report of burglary in the 400 block of Walters Drive, according to the Riley County Poice Department activity report.

 A 51-year-old woman reported an unknown suspect broke into her home and stole a safe with cash. The total estimated loss associated with this case is $10,150. 

Anyone with information, contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward up to $1,000.

They're excited to welcome Reverend Dr. J. Wesley Smith from the Episcopal Church of the Covenant, Pastor Nathanael Hood from the First Presbyterian Church, along with Pastors Dirk Weiss and Will Ravenstein from the First United Methodist Church. They'll be there to bless all the wonderful animals that come by. 

Please remember to keep your pets under control, either on a leash or in a cage, and kindly clean up after them.&nbsp;

Blessing of the Animals will be Saturday

MANHATTAN — The opening of Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.k-state.edu/ag-innovation/facilities/animal-science-arena">Bilbrey Family Event Center</a>&nbsp;provides obvious benefits for the university's equine and livestock sciences, but the facility also expands the university's educational and engagement capabilities in Manhattan, the state of Kansas and beyond.The first facility to be completed in&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/ag-innovation/">K-State's $210 million Agriculture Innovation Initiative</a>&nbsp;had a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 10 at the site, located on the north side of the Manhattan campus off Kimball Avenue.

The Bilbrey Family Event Center features the 130-by-250-foot Tee Jay Quarter Horses Walker Family Arena with bleacher seating for 3,000 people as well as stock pens, a staging area, covered livestock wash racks, an office and meeting room, restrooms with showers, a first aid and security room, a lobby area with concession capabilities and a VIP lounge overlooking the arena. Teresa Douthit, the interim department head of&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.asi.k-state.edu/">animal sciences and industry</a>, said the center will allow the university to extend learning outside of a classroom."We will use this facility to support and demonstrate concepts introduced in our courses," Douthit said. "The Bilbrey Family Event Center will facilitate live animal demonstrations and observations and allow learners to practice skills through clinics and hands-on activities that can't be accomplished in a lecture hall." K-State already has plans to hold some university classes at the center beginning in the spring 2025 semester.

Designed for outreach and engagementWith the center ready for use, it opens doors for the university to attract new events, visitors and partners from around the region and throughout the U.S. K-State plans to host approximately 40 events annually at the Bilbrey Family Event Center.These activities include popular university events — among them the K-State Rodeo, Little American Royal, Cattlemen's Day, Junior Beef Producer Days and Swine Day — in addition to new youth activities and industry events."The Bilbrey Family Event Center represents Kansas State University's commitment to serving not just our students, but communities across Kansas and the entire region," said K-State President Richard Linton. "This facility will welcome thousands of young people each year through 4-H competitions, FFA events and livestock shows — many of whom will experience our campus for the first time and discover the opportunities that await them in agriculture."Student organizations will also be able to present educational demonstrations, learning opportunities and community programs at the center.

Dan Moser, interim Eldon Gideon dean of the College of Agriculture, said the new facility will attract many future students to the Manhattan campus and community."We greatly appreciate the support of our donors to grow awareness of our academic programs and the many career opportunities in agriculture and natural resources," Moser said. The Bilbrey Family Event Center is possible through the support of individuals and corporate partners, including JP and Teresa Bilbrey of the Doubling Gap Ranch in&nbsp;Newville, Pennsylvania, for whom the facility is named."

By creating a venue where industry leaders, K-State Extension educators and families can come together, we're strengthening the vital connection between the university and the agricultural communities we're proud to serve," Linton said. Teresa Douthit, the interim department head of&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.asi.k-state.edu/">animal sciences and industry</a>, said the center will allow the university to extend learning outside of a classroom."We will use this facility to support and demonstrate concepts introduced in our courses," Douthit said. "The Bilbrey Family Event Center will facilitate live animal demonstrations and observations and allow learners to practice skills through clinics and hands-on activities that can't be accomplished in a lecture hall." RILEY COUNTY –&nbsp;Police are investigating a shooting that occurred Saturday afternoon in the 1300 block of Marlatt Avenue in Manhattan, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

Just before 2p.m. polic responded to a report of shots fired in the 1300 Block of Marlatt Avenue. Upon arrival, RCPD located a 35-year-old man suffering from multiple apparent gunshot wounds. Officers immediately rendered first aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. The victim was transported to Stormont Vail in Topeka for serious injuries.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2023 International semi driven by&nbsp;Gurpreet Singh, 29, Greenwood, Indiana was eastbound on Highway 50 one half mile west of Banner Road.&nbsp; &nbsp;The semi struck a 2002 Ford pickup driven by Jeremy&nbsp;Bialek, 44, Florence, who was slowing and was attempting to make a left turn.

EMS transported&nbsp;Bialek to the hospital in Newton.&nbsp;&nbsp;Singh and a passenger in the semi were not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Volunteers work with child welfare professionals, educators and service providers to ensure judges have the information needed to make the most well-informed decisions for each child."

Forty-six students from Spring Valley Elementary's National Honor Society and Student Council provided materials and guidance for each of the JCARSP&nbsp;members present to make "Thanksgiving Turkey Hanging Bells".&nbsp; The bells will be distributed by the students to residents in area nursing homes&nbsp;&nbsp;

Retired School Personnel craft with Spring Valley Students

Downtown Junction City was brimming with Blue Jay Pride Saturday morning. The occasion was the third annual Paint the Town Blue event that signalled the start of Homecoming Week at Junction City High School.

There was a parade on North Washington Street followed by a Spirit Rally in Heritage Park.

JCHS Principal GG Booth enjoyed the event. "This is probably the largest crowd we've had in the three years that we've been doing it. Just so appreciative of everyone coming out and supporting all of our athletics and activities.."

Booth remembers growing up in Junction City. "Just remembering everybody backing the Blue Jays, backing us when were young. Now seeing that come back to life."

Blue Jay head football coach Randall Zimmerman certainly enjoyed the day. "Just great to see so many people out. It's a neat thing."&nbsp;

Some of the Homecoming Week activities are a pie eating contest and a bonfire pep rally. The Blue Jay football team will host Washburn Rural Friday night.

The Junction City Blue Jays got back in the winning column on Friday night, handing the Trojans of Topeka High a 44-6 loss at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka.

Junction City got the ball to start the game and picked up two first downs before they turned the ball over. Due to injuries and some reconfiguration on the offensive line, there was miscommunication between the center and the quarterback. It was an errant snap that Topeka High recovered in plus territory.
The Trojans quickly went three-and-out and decided to go for it on fourth and ten. Junction City junior nose guard Trevon Briley sacked the quarterback, and the Blue Jays regained possession.


On the first play of the ensuing drive, Junction City senior quarterback Conrad Gomez hit junior wide receiver Brody Boeckman down the sideline for a 63-yard touchdown connection to give the Blue Jays a 7-0 lead. That was the score at the end of the first quarter.


Both defenses settled in, and it became a sloppy first half, with both sides flagged for several penalties. In the second quarter, Junction City senior Sean Powell intercepted the ball in the end zone on a deep pass by the Trojans’ quarterback, Zane Smith. The Blue Jays took advantage of the turnover and scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak by Gomez. The PAT was no good, and it was 13-0 JC.

After forcing a punt near midfield, the Blue Jays had a special teams miscue. Senior punt returner Lovell Autry picked up the punt inside the ten-yard line, got spun around, fumbled the ball, and Topeka junior Courtney Sanders picked it up and ran it in for a touchdown. The PAT was blocked, and it was 13-6 in favor of the Blue Jays.
Junction City added a 22-yard field goal before half by kicker Ethan Butler and JC&nbsp;led 16-6 at the half.

The second half was much better for Junction City all the way around. The Blue Jays converted on third and sixteen on a great scramble and pass by Gomez to senior tight end Ayden Martin. A few plays later, Gomez hit Autry down the sideline for a 50-yard touchdown, and JC led 23-6.

The Blue Jays added three more scores: a one-yard touchdown run by junior running back Josiah Totive, another QB sneak touchdown by Gomez, and a 22-yard interception return for a touchdown by linebacker Toby Johnson.
Junction City held on to win 44-6 and improved to 4-2 on the season.
The Blue Jay defense did not give up a touchdown in a game for the second time this season. It is the third time this season they've held a team to under ten points.

Junction City (4-2) hosts Washburn Rural (5-1) next Friday night for the homecoming game.

Blue Jays Rout Topeka High, Defense Dominates Again

Three first responders went on the roof of the Geary County 4-H / Senior Center Friday evening to help raise funds for the annual Junction City - Geary County United Way campaign. They included Junction City Fire Chief Jason Lankas, JCPD Captain Matt Paquette and Geary County Undersheriff Justin Stopper. So far the fundraising total for the first responders is $2,047. More donations remain to be tabulated.

Donations were accepted for each of the first responders.

The Raise Roof event was followed by a balloon release and a karaoke contest.

The overall fundraising goal for the entire campaign during the next year was set at $125,000.

United Way helps support numerous charities and organizations.

United Way kicks off annual campaign in Geary County

Emergency Management has announced that a Boil Water Advisory is in effect until further notice for all Geary County residents who use Dwight Rural Water. This is mainly the area south of Junction City and Grandview Plaza to the Morris County line.

 A main water line break occurred earlier Friday causing the loss of water and water pressure.

DICKINSON COUNTY —A Kansas man is under investigation for allegedly selling drugs in Dickinson County.

In December of 2024, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit began an investigation into the distribution of Methamphetamine in Herington, according to a media release. The approximate ten-month long investigation, resulted in an arrest and a seizure of methamphetamine.

On Thursday, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant in the 500 Block of South A Street in Herington. A search of the residence revealed Methamphetamine, Drug Paraphernalia, Cocaine, Marijuana and other controlled substances.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office also served arrest warrants with the assistance of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Junction City Police Department and the Herington Police Department.

Charles Miller, 48, of Woodbine, Kansas was arrested and booked into the Dickinson County Jail on requested charges of Distribution of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia with the Intent to Distribute, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Distribution of Controlled Substance using communication facility and No Drug Tax Stamp.

Konza Prairie Community Health Center Announces Temporary WIC Clinic Hours

MANHATTAN, KAN. – The Riley County Police Department executed a search warrant at Chill Vibez Smoke and Vape and made an arrest during its investigation on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2025, in the 100 block of Sarber Lane in Manhattan, Pottawatomie County.

According to a media release from the RCPD, the warrant was issued as part of a larger overall investigation that began earlier this year into the distribution of illegal marijuana and THC products in Manhattan. This was an independent investigation by the RCPD and not currently linked to recent enforcement by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI).

At 3p.m., Al-Shawhati Rayd Mohomed-Hezam, 40, of Manhattan, was arrested in connection with the investigation. Mohomed-Hezam is being held in the Pottawatomie County jail on a $50,000 bond on requested charges of distribution of marijuana greater than 450 grams, but less than 30 kilograms; distribution of THC products greater than 100 doses, but less than 1,000 doses distribution of THC products greater than 100 grams, but less than 1 kilogram.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a burglary at a home in Riley County.

Just before 9:30a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report of burglary in the 2700 block of Heartland Valley Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 A 58-year-old man reported an unknown suspect entered his home and took watches, clothing and other items. The estimated total loss associated with this case is $50,000.

RCPD: $50,000 worth of items taken in home burglary

RILEY COUNTY —One person was injured and another arrested after a hit-and-run accident just after 12a.m. Thursday in Riley County.

Officers responded to a report of an injury crash near the intersection of 11th&nbsp;Street and Moro Street in Manhattan on Oct. 9, 2025, at approximately 12:05 a.m.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2019 Ford F150 driven by Michael Smith, 25, Manhattan, struck a pedestrian identified as Madison Asbury, 19, of Manhattan, who crossing 11th&nbsp;Street at Moro Street in the crosswalk.

EMS transported Asbury to Stormont Vail in Topeka with serious injuries. Smith was arrested at approximately 12:35 p.m. in the 1000 block of Seth Child Road and charged with aggravated battery and failure to stop at an accident. He is being held on a total bond of $12,000, according to the RCPD.

Manhattan driver jailed after pickup struck teen in crosswalk

RILEY COUNTY —A Riley County woman died in an accident just after 11:30a.m. Thursday.

A 2017 Buick Encore driven by Sharon Sando, 74, Leonardville was traveling&nbsp; in the 12000 block of Green-Randolph Road, according to the Riley County Police Department Activity report. The SUV veered off the road and rolled into a ditch. 

Sando was pronounced dead at the scene. The RCPD released no additional details.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) are alerting the public to the first known occurrence of the Asian longhorned tick (ALHT), Haemaphysalis longicornis, in Kansas. KDHE identified the ALHT after it was found on a dog in Franklin County last week.

ALHT is an exotic, invasive tick species that was first identified in the United States in New Jersey in 2017. Since then, it has spread westward across the U.S. and, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has now been documented in 21 states, with Kansas being the most recent (<a target="_blank" href="https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.aphis.usda.gov%2Flivestock-poultry-disease%2Fcattle%2Fticks%2Fasian-longhorned%2Fasian-longhorned-tick-what-you-need-know%3Futm_medium=email%26utm_source=govdelivery/1/01000199cac168d2-511d7d78-8fcf-4926-9f35-8404a784e5a7-000000/n3sreE3O3CqMqPwSQzV0ifE1ZMHF1lXeivAtOq4Z1O0=426">https://www.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-poultry-disease/cattle/ticks/asian-longhorned/asian-longhorned-tick-what-you-need-know</a>).

“We have been monitoring the spread of the Asian longhorned tick, especially since it was confirmed in neighboring states,”&nbsp;Animal Health Commissioner Dr. Justin Smith said.&nbsp;“Now that it has been identified in Kansas, we have been in contact with accredited veterinarians across the state to remind them to be alert for this tick and to ensure they understand the risks.”

This prolific tick, which can reproduce without the need for a male tick, has both human and animal health implications. In 2019, an ALHT in Virginia was found to be infected with Bourbon virus, while Connecticut recently identified an ALHT infected with ehrlichiosis, both of which are tick-borne diseases that occur in Kansas but are currently transmitted by the Lone Star tick.

“We’re still learning about this tick and the ecologic role that it currently plays and may play in the future in terms of disease transmission to humans.”&nbsp;Dr. Erin Petro, KDHE State Public Health Veterinarian, said.&nbsp;“While the human health implications are uncertain, this tick has serious implications for animal health.”

The ALHT can cause extreme infestations on affected animals, sometimes leading to severe anemia or even exsanguination. Beyond the physical threat, the ALHT also transmits the cattle parasite&nbsp;Theileria orientalis&nbsp;Ikeda strain, which causes bovine theileriosis.

In 2024, KDHE piloted a program to create a passive tick surveillance network of veterinary clinics throughout the state. 

Through this program, participating clinics submit tick samples from animals in their care to KDHE for identification. This program has been successful in providing information on where various ticks are found across the state and has been especially useful in under-surveyed areas. One of these partners submitted a routine sample which was later identified as ALHT by KDHE and confirmed by the USDA. In both humans and animals, tick bite prevention is key.

To reduce the risk of disease, follow these precautions:

- Be aware of where ticks are found and using preventive measures when in grassy, brushy, or wooded areas.

- Dress preventively by wearing long pants tucked into socks and shirt tucked into pants.

- Treat clothing and gear with permethrin.

- Use an EPA-approved repellent such as DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) when enjoying the outdoors or being in a tick habitat.

- After coming indoors, perform a thorough tick check, being sure to focus on the waistband, under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, back of knees, and in and around the hair.

- Check pets for ticks, especially around the tail, between the back legs, under the front legs, between the toes, in and around the ears, around the eyes, and under the collar.

- Shower soon after being in a tick habitat or engaging in outdoor activities. This will help remove any unattached ticks and identify any attached ticks.

- To remove attached ticks, use a pair of fine-tipped tweezers, grasp the tick near the skin, and apply gentle traction strait outwards until the tick is removed.

- Help prevent tick-borne diseases and tick infestations on pets by consulting with your veterinarian on use of a veterinary-approved flea and tick preventative.

Raise the Roof is an event where three first responders will go onto the roof of the Geary County 4-H / Senior Center at 5:30 p.m. Friday as part of the kickoff of the local United Way campaign. 

United Way Director Nichole Mader said Fire Chief Jason Lankas, Undersheriff Justin Stopper and Junction City Police Captain Matt Paquette will be on the roof as they seek to raise funds for the campaign.

That will be followed by the release of balloons and then there will be a karaoke contest at 7 p.m. This event, called the United Way Kickoff Bash, is open to the public. There will be free pizza and water or soda.
