Kansas wheat farmers have been facing a challenging wheat harvest due to persistent rains on mature wheat. While test weights have suffered because of this, the 2025 crop has shown stronger yields than the past three drought-stricken years.

Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is 82 percent complete, behind 90 percent complete last year but ahead of 77 percent average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending July 6, 2025.&nbsp;

Josh Debes, a wheat farmer in northern Barton County, is among those still navigating the final stretch of harvest. Rainfall over the past week has forced Debes to chase dry fields across the county in hopes of finishing before another rain delay sets in. His wheat crop, already stressed by drought and a high incidence of wheat streak mosaic virus, is now facing quality declines due to the rain.

“We started with test weights at 60 pounds per bushel on our better fields,” Debes said. “But test weights have dropped since the wheat has been rained on.” Equally stressful has been a constant stream of equipment breakdowns that have kept one or both combines out of fields when Mother Nature has opened up a window for cutting.

Despite the setbacks, Debes expects to harvest&nbsp;more bushels this year than in either of the past two years, when extreme drought nearly wiped out his wheat entirely. “Morale is low, but at least we’ve got bushels to sell to cover the costs of getting this fall’s sorghum crop in the ground,” he added.

Jeff Boyd, CEO of Garden City Coop, reported that wheat harvest in their trade territory is 90 to 95 percent complete. Rains over the holiday weekend have slowed progress, and it may be another two days before combines can roll again in Finney County. Recent storms have also caused lodging in some fields.&nbsp;

Harvest began June 14 at their Hooker, Oklahoma, location. Boyd noted that test weights are averaging around 59 pounds per bushel, and protein levels are coming in at 11.8 percent. Overall, Boyd expects an average to above-average crop in terms of total bushels, with quality landing around average. Yields have ranged widely from the 30s to the 80s, with some of the strongest wheat coming from Finney and Lane counties. Yields have tended to decrease further north. The wheat streak mosaic virus complex has impacted yields and test weights in certain areas, while unusually high humidity has caused threshing issues with some varieties.

In Atchison County, Jay Armstrong wrapped up his Soft Red Winter wheat harvest on July 2 with a farm-wide average of 119 bushels per acre. Only 4.2% of wheat grown in Kansas is SRW, according to USDA/NASS’s winter wheat variety survey for 2025. While Armstrong reported good — but not exceptional — quality and test weights, the biggest challenge this season was getting the crop out between frequent rain delays. His harvested acres have already been planted to doublecrop soybeans.

Geary County Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges reported Monday that year to date there have been 67 rural fires, compared to 57 at this time in 2024.

Freedom Fest shut down early this last Saturday night due to concerns about lightning. Co-Coordinator Bob Story said the closure occcurred at 9:15 p.m.. WEEE Entertainment stopped their carnival and then Freedom Fest officials made the decision to stop for the evening as well.

Story noted that the turnout in Heritage Park Friday night, July 4th, was one of the largest ever for the 4th, in the 3,000 to 5,000 range. Overall Freedom Fest went well with no major problems reported.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Toyota Camry driven by&nbsp; Stephanie M. Stallings, 35, Manhattan, was eastbound on Interstate 70 just east of Snokomo Road. An unknown vehicle swerved into the Toyota's lane. The driver lost control of the Camry.&nbsp; The car traveled off the roadway to the left and came to rest against a tree line.

EMS transported&nbsp;Stallings to Stormont Vail. A passenger in the Toyota was not injured. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Manhattan woman injured after I-70 incident

A basketball camp for girls entering Kindergarten through Fifth grade begins this week in Junction City.

The first day of the Junction City Mystics Girls Basketball Camp is Tuesday, July 8th. The camp is free to participate in and will take place every Tuesday and Thursday, through July 24th. (All the days for the camp are: July 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, 24).

Coaches for the camp will be Matt Hoover, Erica Testa, Aaron Landrith, and additional volunteers.

Just after 9p.m. July 5, officers filed a report for aggravated criminal sodomy and rape in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. A 14-year-old girl was listed as the victim and a 33-year-old man known to her was listed as the suspect. 

The RCPD released no additional information.

The&nbsp;Flint&nbsp;Hills&nbsp;Discovery&nbsp;Center, with&nbsp;Prairie Playscape; a dedicated interactive play area; the temporary exhibit,&nbsp;Tiny Titans: Dinosaur Eggs and Babies, which explores the nests of dinosaurs and how they cared for their young; and&nbsp;a 4D theater experience that brings the prairie to life.The Sunflower Summer Program is a benefit for Kansas families with school-aged children, pre-K through Grade 12, to encourage them to explore, and fall in love with Kansas.

 The program is designed to give affordable access to tourism attractions across the state and support the Kansas tourism economy. Eligible Kansas families will download the Sunflower Summer App to claim digital tickets to participating venues. One (1) adult ticket is eligible for free admission with eligible students. Tickets are redeemed at participating venues upon their arrival. Each user can only use tickets once per venue during the 2025 season.

Explore the Flint Hills Discovery Center through the 2025 Sunflower Summer Program

This past week the Junction City Commission approved the acquisition of ptoperty on South Washington as a location for some JCPD investigative personnel. Some renovation work will be needed as well. City staff will return to the commission on that subject later. The facility can also house rescue and SWAT vehicles.

WABAUNSEE COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 11a.m. Thursday in Wabaunsee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported Amy L. Cook, 45, Ogden, exited a 2010 Ford Super Duty truck driven by Nicholas E. Cook, 45, Ogden at&nbsp;32,981 Windy Hill Road in the Maple Hill Truck Stop Parking Lot.

Amy Cook walked through the pumps. The Ford truck pulled in behind her and the trucks trailer pinched her into the front right of a stationary 2024 Ford Edge driven by Patricia J. Bowen, 62, Bloomington, Indiana.

EMS transported Amy Cook to Stormont Vail for treatment of minor injuries. There were no other injuries. The impact caused minor damage to the Ford Edge, according to the KHP.&nbsp;

Freedom Fest opens 

This is day 8 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.&nbsp; &nbsp;

While yields and protein levels remain generally average, Kansas wheat farmers are facing significant challenges this year, including the widespread impact of wheat streak mosaic virus and related diseases, drought during the growing season and scattered rainfall during harvest.&nbsp;

Mike McClellan, who farms in Rooks County with his nephew Cade Beesley, started harvest about five days ago. Their crew includes hired hand Dave and Cade’s son, Coy. With about two-thirds left to cut, they’re making steady progress.

Yields have been above average compared to the past three years and are landing around average overall. Protein levels are ranging from 11.5 to 15.5 percent, and test weights on their better fields, those not hit by wheat streak mosaic virus, have been coming in at 58 to 60 pounds per bushel.

McClellan said their biggest challenges this year have been drought and wheat streak mosaic virus. The virus hit hard in the spring, with large pockets showing up across fields, more widespread than usual. The impact has been noticeable, with lower yields, reduced plant height, and lighter test weights in affected areas. Scattered rain showers during harvest have added to the test weight struggles.

Jackson Hoelker with Skyland Grain in Kingman County says harvest is nearly a month in, with cutting beginning the first week of June. Yields are coming in between 50 and 55 bushels per acre. Protein levels range from 10.5 to 11.5 percent, and test weights, which began around 60 to 63 pounds, have dropped slightly and are now closer to 58.

Hoelker estimates harvest is 85 to 90 percent complete. For the most part, everything that can be cut has been, but growers will need fields to finish drying out before they can finish the rest. While they haven’t seen much sprouting in the area, the biggest challenge this year has simply been how long the harvest is taking to complete.

Jason Ochs, who farms in Hamilton County, reported that harvest began on June 20, but some of the wheat has had several rain showers since it has been ripe. Other areas have received very little rain the past three years. Wheat in the area is short and hard to get it all in the header. The moisture came a little too late, but they did have perfect grainfill weather, cool and rainy. Yields are ranging based on conditions, but test weights have been decent, ranging from 59 to 61 pounds per bushel. He mentioned some wheat streak mosaic virus in the area. Ochs has seen some wind shatter from 40 mile per hour winds. While the wheat is short, the residue out there “makes a huge difference for the next crop,” he said. “It retains moisture and protects from sun and wind.”

Junction City Fire Chief Jason Lankas has confirmed that the damage estimate from the apartment building fire Wednesday at 1541 West Ash Street totaled $275,000.

Junction City firefighters responded to a major apartment building fire at 1541 West Ash Wednesday&nbsp; afternoon. Fire Chief Jason Lankas confirmed there were no injuries but five families were displaced. The Red Cross is assisting those families.

The blaze is under investigation. Authorities were notified when they received a call about an active fire and multiple units then responded to the scene.

--Junction City Commissioners have received a request from Fresh Start Emergency Shelter for $45,000 in 2026.

The facility currently operates as a day shelter.

The commisssion will take up the issue during budget deliberations. They have indicated support for the operation.

Commissioners have awarded a bid totaling $483,830 to J&amp;K Contracting for utility improvements on McFarland Road. The work needs to be done before a roundabout project can be done.

Commissioners voted to express their support for the employment of five new city employees. They include an assistant city attorney, a grant writer, city planner, project manager and a public information officer. A public information officer is expected to be hired in the near future. The necessary funding is in the budget.

City manager Kim Zimmerman said that the five positions are key to the City moving forward.

The Summer Jam 3 on 3 Baskatball Tournament fundraiser sponsored by the Felix Snipes Foundation will be held July 12 - 13 at the 12th Street Community Center.

The Greater Geary Community Foundation has awarded I.C.A.R.E. with a $1,000 grant. The money will be used for the "I.C.A.R.E. That U Read Project" for "most improved readers" Pre-K- 5th grade in USD 475 and schools in Geary County. The project goal is to promote the love of reading and increase intergenerational reading among family members &amp; friends.
