The Geary County Sheriff's Department reported that on Sunday Deputies responded to US 77-Highway at mile marker 148 in reference to a three vehicle injury accident. Alleigh Swarts of Manhattan KS was traveling southbound in her 2008 Kia Sorento when she hydroplaned and side swiped a 1989 Buick Park Avenue being driven by Keenan Sanger-Koepke of Herringto who was traveling north.

After striking the Buick, Swarts’ vehicle then struck a 2022Chevrolet Silverado being driven by Travis Hiatt of Manhattan, KS who was traveling north. 

Occupants of the Chevrolet Truck were transported by Junction City EMS/Fire to Stormont Vail of Flint Hills for Medical Evaluation.&nbsp;

Library Board meeting date changee

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information (LMI) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8% in March. This is unchanged from 3.8% in February and an increase from 3.3% in March 2024. The labor force participation rate for Kansas decreased to 67.1% in March, according to a media release from the KDOL.

The unemployment rate in Geary County is down from 4.8 percent in February to 4.7 percent in March.&nbsp; The rate in Riley, Wabaunsee and Pottawatomie counties is also down slightly.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 900 from February. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 600 over the month, while government increased by 300. The largest job gains in the private sector were in leisure and hospitality (+1,100 jobs) and financial activities (+400 jobs). The largest decrease was in trade, transportation, and utilities (-1,000 jobs).

Since March 2024 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 2,700. This change is due to a decrease of 700 private sector jobs and an increase of 3,400 government jobs.

Two Junction City High School Athletes sign to play College Sports next year

St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Junction City will hold its annual auction Saturday, April 26, at the Bradley Gymnasium on the school's campus. The event will begin at 5:00 p.m. and conclude at 9:00 p.m.

The annual auction for St. X. is the school's largest fundraiser each year. This year, the theme is “Denim and Diamonds.” Tickets to the event are $60 each, $300 for a table of six people, or $400 for a table of eight. A ticket to the auction features a catered meal from Hog Wild Pit BBQ, an open bar, raffles, a drink and dine pull, and opportunities to bid on items for the live and silent auctions. The proceeds from the annual auction will be used for the operational costs of the school.

Every year at the auction, there is an “item-less item.” This year, that "item-less item" is improving the locker rooms and preschool restrooms. Attendees can also bid or donate money to that.

BHS Construction has announced that there will be a major infrastructure and streetscape improvement project in Aggieville that will begin following Kansas State University’s Spring graduation, about May 19th.

Phase One of construction will begin at the intersection of Moro Street and North 12th Street, with an anticipated completion date of mid-June. This initial phase includes critical upgrades to essential utilities—water, sewer, and stormwater systems—laying the groundwork for safer, more accessible streets and sidewalks. Upgraded infrastructure will also improve emergency response readiness and ensure long-term reliability.

From North 12th Street (Moro to Alley) improved streetscapes will include repaved sidewalks, outdoor dining/seating and more. These improvements are designed to support local businesses, enhance community event flexibility, and provide a more pedestrian-friendly environment for both residents and visitors. While phased street and sidewalk closures will be necessary, the construction schedule has been planned to minimize disruption and maintain access as much as possible.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas felon on new allegations.

Just after 9p.m. Thursday, police arrested 29-year-old&nbsp;Sherman Sherin II of Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Sherin is being held on a $20,000 bond on requested charges of Stalking and two counts of Violation of Protection Order. He was discharged from the Kansas Department of Corrections in May of 2024, according to online records.

Jake currently serves as vice president and general counsel for the University of Toledo. Jake was selected following a national search."I look forward to having Charles' leadership and legal experience as part of our leadership team at K-State," Linton said. Fort Riley's Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard (CGMCG) will present the nation's colors at this year's Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby. The Kentucky Oaks is Friday, May 2, and the 151st Kentucky Derby is Saturday, May 3. Fort Riley's CGMCG is the first active-duty Color Guard to present the colors at the Derby.

Captain Patrick Gurnow, Commander of the Troops of the Commanding Generals Mounted Color Guard said it was founded in 1992. The CGMCG currently consists of 30 soldiers and 26 horses. 

"We reached out to some folks from the Kentucky Derby this past June and sent them information of all the events we have done and what we can provide the Army and the Derby on Horseback," Gurnow said. 

The Kentucky Derby researched the First Infantry Division and the Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard and extended an invitation in August 2024 to present the colors to the 151st Kentucky Derby this year, on May 3, 2025.

Gurnow explained that the Color Guard has been training since the invitation, and in the past two months, the CGMCG has hit hard on aviation training, trying to get the horses acclimated and prepared for the noise of a flyover at the Derby.

Making the trip to Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby will be 15 First Infantry Division Soldiers. There will also be members from Fort Riley Public Affairs attending as well. "We're going to have six soldiers out riding at the Derby and on television," Gurnow said. "We are going to be on NBC TV and potentially projecting up to six minutes of air time." 

The Mounted Color Guard will leave for the Kentucky Derby on Thursday, April 24, and arrive in Kentucky on Saturday, April 26. "Every eight hours we have to stop and let the horses sleep and get them in pastures," Gurnow said. "We will utilize a lot of civilian pastures leading up there." 

From April 26th through May 1st, the Mounted Color Guard will do more training and finish up preparation for the Presentation of the Colors at the Kentucky Oaks on May 2, and the Kentucky Derby on May 3.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Ham is a staple for many families’ Easter feast, but between all the varieties available, consumers are often confused on how to safely prepare this holiday favorite.

Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee said hams come in two categories: cooked/ready-to-eat, or uncooked.

“Package labels will state if it is uncooked or ready-to eat,” said Blakeslee, who also is coordinator&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/">of K-State’s Rapid Response Center for Food Science</a>. “Always read the package label and instructions to be informed on how to safely handle the ham.”

Varieties of cooked ham include canned, vacuum packaged and spiral-cut cooked ham.

“Ready-to-eat ham may be called cooked,” Blakeslee said. “Ham that is not ready-to-eat but has the appearance of ready-to-eat products will bear a statement on the label indicating the product needs cooking.”

All cooked ham can be eaten cold, straight out of the package. If preferred hot, Blakeslee said ham should be heated to an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit in an oven set at a minimum temperature of 325 F. If the ham has been repackaged in a location outside the processing plant -- such as inside the grocery store deli -- heat to an internal temperature of 165 F. Reheat any leftover cooked ham to 165 F.

Blakeslee said the best way to check the internal temperature is to use a food thermometer.

Varieties of uncooked hams can include fresh, cured and smoked – with or without the bone. Blakeslee suggests reading the label and instructions on the package. Some may look like they are ready-to-eat, but they are not and must be cooked thoroughly before eating, she said.

The package should contain directions on how to cook the ham, but for additional guidance, the USDA offers an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fsis.usda.gov/food-safety/safe-food-handling-and-preparation/meat-fish/hams-and-food-safety">online timetable for cooking ham</a>. There is a minimum cooking temperature for all uncooked hams.

“Ham that requires cooking before consumption must reach an internal temperature of 145 F (with a three-minute rest time),” said Blakeslee. “Set the oven no lower than 325 F.”

Blakeslee said the ham’s end quality can be affected by the type and size of uncooked hams. Cooking and resting time can differ significantly between varieties, total weight, and portion, so for the perfectly cooked ham, check the USDA guidelines.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. – Geary County Schools USD 475 is proud to announce that Junction City High School had 66 art pieces earn Certificate Awards of Merit on Wednesday at the 2025 Fort Hays State University High School Art Day Exhibition.

Other highlights included senior D'Marion Swift&nbsp;not only placing first overall for JCHS, but also earning six awards, while one other student claimed runner-up accolades. A JCHS sophomore rounded out JCHS’ top-artists by recording a third place showing. Finally, junior Alana Gayton was awarded a $1,000 scholarship inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

In all, 31 Blue Jays traveled to the art day exhibition. The artwork, which was judged by a juried panel of Fort Hays State faculty and Hays area artists, was displayed along with several other pieces from students throughout the state of Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

JCHS Honored at Fort Hays State University High School Art Day Exhibition

JUNCTION CITY – The public is invited to attend an open house on the Taylor Road bridge over I-70 project in Geary County from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, at the JCNaz, 1025 South Washington St., in Junction City.

The Kansas Department of Transportation will have display boards available for review, and KDOT staff will be present to answer questions about the overall project, which is currently in its final design phase.

This project was identified as a top priority for the north central region through KDOT’s Local Consult process in 2021. After reviewing the bridge’s condition, current/future transportation needs and public input, KDOT will proceed with the project as a bridge replacement only.

The new bridge structure will follow current design criteria and be widened to meet local transportation needs.&nbsp;

Meeting information will also be available online at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.ksdot.gov/I-70-Taylor-Road">ksdot.gov/I-70-Taylor-Road</a>&nbsp;at the time of the public meeting, and public comments will be accepted through May 13.

At the Hampton Inn on April 16, the JC Breakfast Optimist Club members heard from Trase McQueen who is the Resource Lab Manager for Memory and Aging at Kansas State University. Trase stated that as “as we age there are two proteins that over produce and kill neurons in the brain, which can cause dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease and others. The goal is to disrupt those proteins and slow them down.”

He went on to say that “chronic stress, food choices, behavior habits, lack of quality sleep, high blood pressure, circulator issues in the body and genetics are some of the contributors” that may cause memory loss and related diseases.

The good news is that in a study done on a group of nuns who had been living to the age of 100. Researchers found that the nuns in the study who donated their brains after death had common traits. The study of 325 Roman Catholic nuns were members of the School of Sisters of Notre Dame in the U.S. found that 69% of the nuns who spoke a language in addition to English did not have dementia. The nuns also had a common lifestyle of social interaction, grew their own vegetables, had a belief and hope in a higher power, continued to be lifelong learners and regularly did low grade exercises. Their lifestyles and eating habits contributed to curbing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Optimists Learned About How Our Brains Change With Age

The Junction City First United Methodist Church is hosting its 4th annual Easter Egg-Stravaganza this Saturday, April 19. The Easter egg hunt and activities will be in Heritage Park at 6th and Washington St. in Junction City.&nbsp;

Activities for the event begin at 10:00 a.m. with games and music, and the age-group Easter egg hunt starts at 11:00 a.m.&nbsp;

Admission to the event is free, and participants need to bring their baskets.&nbsp;

On Thursday at 4:29 a.m. Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to Henry Gate, Fort Riley to assist Fort Riley Police with a hit and run. The Sheriff's Department said that Deputies were advised the suspect had struck a barrier at Henry Gate before fleeing the scene back into Geary County Deputies were able to locate the suspect and custody was transferred to Fort Riley Police. Case is still under investigation.

Bailey remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a bond of $75,000.

The junction City/Geary County United Way&nbsp; 2025 Allocation process has concluded. Nichole Mader, Executive Director, said this year they welcomed back returning volunteers as well as new ones. The Allocation process is how partner agencies receive funding from United Way.

. The donations and support received comes from&nbsp; the community, so the community must have a say in how and where it is spent. Non-profits that are in good standing apply for funding from the&nbsp;United&nbsp;Way&nbsp;of Junction City/Geary County. Volunteers come together, review each application, interview the agencies, and then make decisions on whether funding will be provided and how much. This year, applications were received from 13 agencies. The total amount requested was&nbsp;$107,600. 

Mader said that ss much as they would love to be able to fund each agency with their requested amounts, they are unable to do so. Allocation volunteers met with each agency and learned about their programs, how they impact our communities, and the work that each of them does.

2025 United Way allocations

John L. Tice has filed for election to the Junction City Commission. Geary County Clerk Courtney Gilbert confirmed the filing.

Tice is the fourth candidate to file for the city commission. He joins William Arnold Jr., Terry Butler and Sam Yoskowitz in the race. Three seats are up for election.
