While I hear the local weather personalities referring to this heat as part of the “Dog Days of Summer,” I can’t help but wonder when this extreme heat we’ve continually experienced in July and August will end. &nbsp; My weather app has shown more images of a blazing sun and cactus with the words “Very Hot” in its 10-day forecast for more days than I care to remember. While I appreciate the artistic representation of the obvious extreme heat so many of us are currently experiencing, I wonder if we could possibly get some additional images added that would capture the essence of our current weather status.&nbsp; &nbsp; Perhaps an image of a dripping ice cream cone with the blazing sun overhead, an image of someone sticking their face into a freezer or an image of an individual sitting within the breeze of a fan blowing over a very large ice cube. These are all new images I’d suggest to my weather app if they were crowdsourcing suggestions for updated “Very Hot” icons. &nbsp; Upon further review, I think I’d also suggest that my weather app consider the individual user or the specific location of said user when creating the visual content associated with the 10-day forecast. &nbsp; While I stumble upon cactus growing in central Kansas on occasion, I really feel the image my weather app could utilize should be more reflective of my surroundings while experiencing this oppressive heat. &nbsp; For example, a cartoon image of two children cannonballing into a stock tank with a blazing sun overhead would be quite representative for me. &nbsp; Perhaps an illustrator could capture the image of our primarily outside farm dog, Rosie, sprawled out with her belly covering the cool tile floor in our bathroom, laying near a floor vent blasting cold air onto her. &nbsp; Maybe someone could draw up an image of a cow standing in a farm pond wearing an umbrella hat. Of course, that image would suggest that there’s enough water in our farm ponds in the first place – which would not be accurate based on our current status. Since dried-up ponds on our farm is the current situation, maybe an image of a cow hiding in the shade of the trees, or a cow sipping from a large straw coming out of a stock tank would be more symbolic of our present condition. &nbsp; I wonder if someone could create an artistic rendering of our dryland corn or dryland soybeans waving a white flag and saying, “We Give Up!” &nbsp; Surely my weather app will update any day now with an image of a simple, pleasant sun partially behind a cloud. Perhaps an image of a cloud with raindrops will also soon appear. Surely the images on my weather app will change and suggest that we are getting to the end of this heat. I’m not sure when the weather app image updates will happen, but I guarantee I’m checking for those changes on a daily basis with the hope that the end of the Dog Days of Summer are near. On Monday, Lincoln Elementary fifth grade teacher Jennifer Farr was recognized for being awarded the Lowell Milken Center (LMC) Fellowship by Unsung Heroes in Fort Scott, Kansas, an international educational non-profit.

The LMC Fellowship is a merit-based award for educators of all disciplines who value the importance of teaching respect and understanding through project-based learning. The Center selects exemplary teachers from the United States and around the world who will collaborate on projects that discover, develop, and communicate the stories of Unsung Heroes in history.

During the summer, Farr traveled to Fort Scott on June 25, for a week of collaboration with LMC staff.

A personal update from K-State President Richard Linton:

With the launch of our new strategic plan around the corner, I like to think of our university at the starting line of our future, revving up the engine louder and more confidently than ever before. We’re&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/today/announcement/?id=90661">seeking final input on the draft plan</a>, putting all the people and pieces in place, and building up the energy so much that the only option is to catapult forward. This energy is indeed a driving force for this institution, and that is because of each and every one of you who are engaged with and invested in our great university. Our students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors and friends are truly our backbone — you step up whenever and wherever needed to advance our mission and vision forward. Your shared optimism means the world to this institution — and to me personally, now more than ever.

I owe it to you all —&nbsp;my K-State family&nbsp;— to share some personal and difficult news as we prepare to launch forward. This past week, I was diagnosed with throat and tongue cancer, which will require me to pursue daily treatments in Kansas City with the KU Cancer Center for the next few months. This is obviously not how I envisioned starting the fall semester, but it is necessary that I take these steps at this time, as this cancer is treatable and curable. I need to be at my best for this institution — you deserve that from me, and in consultation with my medical team, I also know this is what is best for me and my family.

I will stay engaged with the university and the great work we’re doing, but I also recognize I won’t be able to be present in the way you’ve known me to be, as much of my work will have to take place remotely from Kansas City. I am grateful to the Kansas Board of Regents for supporting the decision to appoint another university leader to partner with me in a special capacity during this time. Dr. Marshall Stewart, senior vice president and chief of staff, will represent me at important university events and meetings and collaborate with me on decision making. Dr. Stewart and I are completely aligned in how we lead this university, and we will continue to ensure we’re aligned through regular communication. Place your trust in him as you have with me — he will ensure we continue our planned path forward together.

I am also grateful to the medical professionals who have been and will continue to guide me on this journey. From my local physician to the team at the KU Cancer Center, I know I am incredibly well taken care of.

And of course, I am eternally grateful for the love of my family — Sally, Lily and Chris. Their support always has and always will lift me up every day. I know the energy generated from the support of my entire Wildcat family will also do the same.&nbsp;

As I look to the future, I want you to know that I look to it with optimism — that is the K-State way, and this community has instilled that in me. K-Staters don’t shy away from difficult situations or moments of uncertainty. We face them head on and fight for the greatest outcome. That is what I do for you every day, and that is what I will continue to do for you as I embark on this journey.

Thank you for your support, and thank you in advance for affording that same support to Dr. Stewart. I’ve said it many times, and I’ll say it again: The future of Kansas State University is bright, and I look forward to realizing our great vision for the future together.

K-State president shares cancer diagnosis

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged criminal damage to property&nbsp;

Just before 8a.m. Monday, officers filed a report for criminal damage to property at Bergman Elementary 3401 Lombard Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

It was reported an unknown suspect damaged two fence gate doors and two metal security doors at the school. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $5,000. Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. Using Crime Stoppers allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

RCPD investigating vandalism at school in Manhattan

WABAUNSEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating&nbsp; a suspect for alleged child sex crimes.

On Monday, officials in Wabaunsee County were alerted to possible exploitation of a child, according to a media release from the sheriff's office.

Deputies responded to a residence in the 300 Block of Elm Street in Alta Vista and made contact with 57-year-old Kenneth Scott Seidens of Alta Vista.

Evidence on scene led deputies to arrest him on requested charges of&nbsp; aggravated sexual battery, aggravated criminal sodomy and contributing to a child's misconduct. Deputies booked Seidens into jail just after 12:30a.m. Tuesday, according to online jail records.

The child was made safe, according to the sheriff's office.

The City of Junction City Public Works Department turned on the School Zone Warning Flashers on Monday, August 7th as a reminder that school will soon be in session.

The School Zone Warning Flashers will be turned on all week as a reminder for drivers that area schools will be in session this week starting Friday, August 11th and to obey the 20 MPH school speed zones. Drivers also need to pay close attention to the school children during the morning and afternoon hours when children will be walking.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary in Manhattan.

Just before noon Friday, officers filed a report for burglary in the 700 block of Fremont Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

RCPD: Another handgun stolen from vehicle in Manhattan

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a 2-vehicle crash in Manhattan.

Just after 10:30p.mm. August 4, officers filed a report for aggravated battery near the intersection of N. 8th Street and Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 2020 Chevrolet Silverado driven by James Smith, 42, of Manhattan was chasing a car northbound on 8th Street before running a stop sign and&nbsp; colliding with an eastbound 2003 Dodge Ram driven by Logan Goetzinger, 20, of Manhattan. The impact caused the Silverado to flip on its roof. 

No significant injuries were reported. This crash remains under investigation, according to the RCPD.

At a time when the number of early childhood care and education professionals does not meet demand, Kansas State University researchers and professional staff are working to rebuild the state's workforce. The Kansas Department for Children and Families has awarded more than $5 million in initial funding for a collaborative project involving K-State. The project will implement a multi-level career pathway, which serves as a tool and aspirational plan to guide current and interested members of the early childhood workforce to advancement opportunities. The career pathway is a primary component of the workforce development goal of the state's&nbsp;<a href="https://kschildrenscabinet.org/all-in-for-kansas-kids/strategic-plan/goal-6-workforce/">All In For Kansas Kids</a>strategic plan. The plan was developed with funding through the Preschool Development Grant to Kansas to the Kansas Children's Cabinet and Trust Fund. Bronwyn Fees, K-State professor of applied human sciences, serves as the principal investigator for Kansas Child Care Training Opportunities, or KCCTO, which is the organization that received the funding. KCCTO is&nbsp;a K-State-sponsored project that provides professional development and technical assistance to early childhood professionals across Kansas. The multiphase, multiyear plan coordinates with partnering agencies, organizations, associations, and secondary and post-secondary institutions to implement the competency-based career pathway. The project's first phase included assembling a steering committee representing a breadth and depth of expertise in early childhood care and education systems to develop an implementation plan for the career pathway. K-State's Office of Educational Innovation and Evaluation will evaluate the full implementation. "The early childhood career pathways initiative ensures the state expands the workforce needed to provide quality child care and education," said Fees, who also serves as associate dean for academic and faculty affairs in K-State's College of Health and Human Sciences. She is also a member of the state's Early Childhood Recommendations Panel. MORRIS COUNTY—A Kansas teen died in an accident just before 11a.m. Sunday in Morris County.

According to the sheriff's department, the&nbsp;Life Alert 360 mobile phone app, notified the sheriff's office of a possible car crash near 1800 Road and Z Ave. in Morris County.

A Sheriff’s Deputy responded to the accident location and found a 2003 Chevy S10 pickup driven by Kolter L. Litke, 15, of Council Grove had been involved in an accident.

The Deputy immediately started CPR. EMS transported Kolter to the Morris County Hospital with life threatening injuries. He was later pronounced deceased.

&nbsp;The preliminary investigation indicated the truck was traveling eastbound on Z Avenue near 1800 Road when it left the roadway and struck a concrete bridge rail.

Sheriff: 15-year-old Kan. boy dies after crash into bridge rail

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss sees some softness in the economy in his Mid-America Business Conditions survey, but that doesn't mean that the Federal Reserve will try to stimulate the economy at this point.

"We've got a whole generation of Americans that have lived on low interest rates," Goss said. "Now, you've got higher interest rates on the long end, mortgage rates and also on the short end in terms of credit card balances. This is new to a lot of folks and it's going to continue. We're going to continue to see higher interest rates. Those who are betting that the Fed's going to reduce interest rates, I would say, you're betting too heavily. You probably need to pull that bet back."

The interest rate hit that current homeowners would take to move up is keeping many of them from making that move.

"That's one of the big factors slowing down the sale of existing houses," Goss said. "On the flip side, it has encouraged, or incentivized new home sales. New home sales have been doing very well there, even despite the higher mortgage rates. You're going to see an end to that. I think that will slow down in the weeks and months ahead. Existing home sales, you're probably going to see an increase there, as some Americans get new jobs, they are going to have to put their house on the market and buy a new house."

The struggles in the large banking sector are of more concern to Washington than the mergers of community banks in this part of the country, according to Goss.

"The Fed is committed to juicing the economy, whatever it takes," Goss said. "Like I said, they are not going to reduce interest rates on the short end. They are going to increase liquidity in case we have a downturn. They did that back when the Silicon Valley Bank failed and the other two banks, Signature Bank and First Republic. They juiced the economy back then. They will juice it again when they need to in the fall. It's not going to be a real hard, hard landing, it's going to be a bumpy landing."

Goss doesn't believe there will be a full-blown recession, but he does see a downturn on the horizon, just maybe not for long enough to technically qualify as a recession.

Goss: Don't expect relief interest wise for awhile

CLAY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged burglary and asking the public for help identifying suspects.

On Friday, police received a report of an aggravated burglary and attempted robbery in the 700 block of Liberty Street. in Clay Center, according to a media release. The suspects fled before officers arrived. They are described as&nbsp;two black males between the ages of 15 and 20 years old. They 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10 and&nbsp; had shoulder-length dreadlocks.

One suspect was wearing an orange hoodie, camouflaged pants, one black shoe and one white shoe.

The other suspect was wearing a white or light gray zip-up jacket with a hood, blue jeans with two medium-sized holes on both pant legs and black shoes. He also had some of the ends of his dreadlocks dyed white. 

No weapons were reported to have been used.&nbsp; Anyone has knowledge or knows the identity of either suspect, please notify the Clay Center Police Department at 785-632-2121, and do not contact either of the suspects.

The highest temperature for the month was 106 on the 28th. This reading tied the record high for the date. 106 was first reached in 1956 and again in 2012. That was the only temperature record set or tied during July. Being only 0.8 of a degree above normal indicates it wasn’t a record hot month, fortunately. The hottest July on record was in 1954 when a blistering monthly mean temperature of 87.0 was reached. The second hottest July was more recent, 2012, with a monthly mean temperature of 86.1. 

The coldest July on record is a tie between 1950 and 1967 when the region only managed a monthly mean temperature of 73.8.Average July rainfall is 4.14 inches. Thanks to big rains on July 1st and 5th the region totaled 4.34 inches of rain. After the rain on the 5th, however, the area saw less than a half inch of rain the rest of the month. Year to date precipitation has been 17.43 inches, well below the year to date normal of 21.10 inches. Much to many local residents' surprise, the wettest July was NOT in 1951 or 1993, but in 1950 when 13.65 inches of rain flooded the area. (For the record, 12.43 inches of rain fell in July 1951 and 11.53 inches in July 1993. In an interesting twist, July 1992 was actually wetter than July 1993 with 12.32 inches recorded.) 

The driest July on record was in 1983 when a mere 0.04 inches barely disturbed the dust in the gauges!August normally gives us slightly cooler temperatures and slightly more rainfall. Currently, 52,080 Veterans are receiving service-connected compensation from the federal government, leaving 134,000 who may be eligible for similar benefits.

Dole VA Medical Center. “The time for Veterans to act is now, and we will not rest until every one of them gets what they’ve earned.”

The economic impact of service-connected compensation cannot be understated.

“Our statistics indicate yearly compensation brings an estimated $1.05 billion into the state of Kansas,” said Donna Meyer-Hickel, Director of VBA’s Wichita Regional Office.

Just before 9a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for fraud in Manhattan after a 32-year-old victim when she reported an unknown suspect hacked into her American Airlines account and stole 63,600 miles, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,416.

Just after 9:30a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for burglary and criminal damage to property in the 2100 block of Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;Manhattan High School West reported an unknown suspect broke into the school through the roof and damaged the ceiling.

The Friends of the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library has identified four dates when they will offer the acceptance of curbside donations of items for the annual fall book sale. All dates are Saturdays and include: August 12, September 2, September 23 and October 14. This service will take place at the north entrance from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. each morning.

The friends prefer receiving gently used hardback and paperback books, audiobooks and DVDs for these donation dates. Donations can also be accepted anytime during regular library hours which include Mondays-Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Donations of more than five items must be in a bag or box and no more than five boxes or bags will be accepted per family. Bags and boxes will not be returned. Receipts can be provided upon request.

The fall book sale will be held in November and will feature the best-of-the-best donated items. Current friends members can get first pick on Thursday, November 2nd from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The sale will open to the public on Friday, November 3rd from Noon to 6:00 p.m. and continue on Saturday, November 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A bag sale will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 on November 4.

Friends can check the status of their memberships any time before or during the sale. New members are also welcome to join anytime.
