RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged criminal damage in Manhattan.

Just after 7a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 700 block of Midland Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Three men reported a known suspect damaged multiple walls, ceilings, and electrical outlets at a home in that location. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $30,000, according to the RCPD.

MANHATTAN - On Thursday, the Fort Riley Education Services hosted the 2023 Combined Graduation Ceremony at the Hilton Garden Inn in Manhattan.

More than 60 graduates walked across the stage receiving their diplomas.

Higher educations institutions represented at the ceremony will include&nbsp;Barton Community College,&nbsp;&nbsp;Central Texas College,&nbsp;Kansas State University, Southwestern College, Upper Iowa University and various other distance learning colleges.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The Combined Graduation Ceremony is hosted by Fort Riley Education Services to honor those who have accomplished a personal standard of excellence; inspire Soldiers, family members and Army civilians to continue pursuing higher education; showcase the many educational opportunities available at Fort Riley; and emphasize the importance of continuing education.

Graduates received certificates or associates, bachelor’s or master’s degree from their respective colleges and universities. Col. John B. Mountford, Deputy Commanding Officer for Maneuver, 1st Infantry Division, will deliver the commencement address.

Fort Riley plans to reopen the U.S. Cavalry and 1st Infantry Division Museums with a ribbon cutting June 13 at 10:30 a.m. The museum complex is at 205 Henry Drive on Fort Riley. 

The museums have been closed for renovations since January 2018. The renovations included structural improvements, updated lighting and technology, and provided museum staff the opportunity to redesign the display spaces. 

The building that houses the U.S. Cavalry Museum is one of the oldest structures on Fort Riley and was built in 1855 to serve as the post hospital. It was renovated and a clock tower was added in 1890, when the building became the Cavalry School administration building. In 1957 it became the Fort Riley Historical Museum and was renamed the U.S. Cavalry Museum in 1962. 

The Cavalry Museum tells the story of the U.S. Cavalry from 1775 to present day, highlighting life on the Great Plains prior to the arrival of settlers, the role of Fort Riley and the cavalry, the life of the cavalry Soldier, and traces the history of the cavalry from the days of the horse soldier to the modern era of the air cavalry. 

The 1st Infantry Division Museum occupies a structure that was built as a barracks in 1905. The building was later used for office space and as the post library. It reopened in 1992 as the 1st Infantry Division Museum and tells the story of the division from its beginning in 1917 through the division’s campaigns in World Wars I and II, the post-war occupation of Germany, the Vietnam Conflict, Desert Storm and the Global War on Terror. 

Both museums feature state-of-the-art displays and technology that will allow visitors to fully experience the stories the museums tell. 

Following the ribbon cutting, both museums will be open to the public year-round, Sundays, 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The museums will be closed on Federal holidays.

U.S. Cavalry and 1st Infantry Division Museums at Fort Riley ready to reopen

ABILENE - This weekend as many families venture out to decorate graves in honor of Memorial Day, one family is celebrating its heritage in a different fashion.

The great-great-grandson of Abilene founders Timothy and Eliza Hersey recently visited Abilene. And, thanks to the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau Tourism Assistant Sharolyn Adams, he and his new bride enjoyed a small and special wedding ceremony. Geral and Kay Hersey were wed Thursday evening with the Honorable Judge John Barker officiating at the site of Geral’s grandparents’ former dugout home (beneath the present-day Lebold Mansion). Adams and CVB director Julie Roller Weeks served as witnesses to the momentous occasion.

Geral and his new bride, Kay, reside in Washington State and traveled to Abilene as part of their vacation. While in town, they made several stops, including a stay at Abilene’s Victorian Inn Bed &amp; Breakfast and a visit to the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum.

“We’re honored they chose Abilene for their special ceremony,” Roller Weeks said. “The CVB is committed to assisting visitors to our five-star community. Thank you to everyone who helped make this a special day for the Herseys.”

Fun fact: Eliza Hersey receives credit for giving Abilene its name from the book of Luke 3:1 in the Bible, where the name Abilene appeared, loosely meaning “city of the plains.”

Great-great-grandson of Abilene founders visits, weds

DICKINSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations in connection with arson and theft.

Just before 5:30a.m. Wednesday, police and fire crews responded to a house fire in the 300 block of NE Eighth Street in Abilene, according to a media release.

Moments later, police and fire were dispatched to a second house fire in the 500 block of SE Sixth Street in Abilene. Investigators have determined both fires were intentionally set.

Just before 6a.m. that same morning deputies responded to a burglary at Liberty Store, 601 S. Buckeye Avenue.

Officers determined the two fires and burglary were connected and committed by the same suspect. Just before 8a.m., officer located and arrested 25-year-old&nbsp;Dai’Reese M. Gelinas of Abilene a home in the 100 block of S. Cedar Street.

He is being held on requested charges of aggravated arson, burglary, theft, criminal threat and criminal damage to property.

 The fires caused. approximately $100,000 in damage. The burglary loss is estimated in excess of $500. The Kansas Highway Patrol and State Fire Marshal assisted with the investigation.&nbsp;

JCPD to host 'Movies at the Park' this summer

WASHINGTON —The ESOP Association represents the interests of millions of Employee Owners and their companies across the nation.&nbsp;

The Founder's award was created upon Michael Keeling's retirement from The ESOP Association after 28 years as President. The organization only presented this award one other time, and that was to the founder himself.

Association honors Eagle Chairman Gary Shorman with Founder's award

MANHATTAN - Just after 10am on Thursday morning, Manhattan Fire Department was called out to 1006 Pottawatomie Court on the report of a structure fire.

Upon arrival fire crews found a duplex with smoke coming from the building.

After searching the house, the fire was contained within 10 minutes.

The occupant was not home at the time of the fire.&nbsp;

One cat was rescued from the fire and received treatment for smoke inhalation by Manhattan Fire Department firefighters and Riley County EMS personnel.

Eighteen firefighters and 6 fire apparatus responded to the scene, along with Riley County EMS and Riley County Police Department.

The residence is a single story duplex, with damage from the fire and smoke estimated at $20,000 to the contents of the home and $15,000 to the sturcture.

The owner of the property is listed as Housing Authority City of Manhattan.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Students at&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>&nbsp;were not only dedicated to their studies this past year but also spent countless hours giving back to the Salina community with a long list of volunteer efforts. At the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, K-State Salina leadership challenged campus members to become more involved and push themselves to find community-service projects to give back. Many students at K-State Salina took that challenge to heart, and they led or participated in more than 20 community service projects over the academic year. While some projects were small, others took significant time to organize and find student volunteers to complete. Much of that organization came from K-State Salina's Student Governing Association,&nbsp;or SGA, and Charlie Kiehlbauch,&nbsp;sophomore in professional pilot,&nbsp;Fort Worth, Texas, who serves&nbsp;in&nbsp;the community service cabinet position on SGA. While Kiehlbauch&nbsp;participated&nbsp;in many of the outreach efforts, he spent even more time putting together opportunities for students to&nbsp;volunteer&nbsp;by becoming a liaison to the community. "I talked with SGA leadership, and we decided to create a position within the organization to spearhead our campus-led volunteer efforts,"&nbsp;said Kiehlbauch.&nbsp;"If someone in the community needed volunteers, they could reach out to me, and I helped organize the student body to give back and participate. I also wanted to focus on planning big events to make them even more impactful." Many of the efforts that Kiehlbauch&nbsp;organized&nbsp;revolved around the K-State Salina campus and helping fellow students. There were other efforts, however, that allowed the students to get involved in the community. These efforts&nbsp;included assisting students at Sunset Elementary School in Salina&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/media/newsreleases/2022-12/salina-giving-tree-project122122.html" target="_blank">Giving Tree</a>&nbsp;volunteer project, where students, faculty and staff at K-State Salina donated gifts to elementary students and their families. Another volunteer effort was STEM Night at&nbsp;Sunset Elementary School.&nbsp;Several&nbsp;of&nbsp;K-State Salina's student clubs&nbsp;visited the school to share more about K-State Salina with the students. Organizations that participated&nbsp;include the&nbsp;Flight Team, Women's Air Race Classic,&nbsp;Women in Aviation, the&nbsp;Uncrewed Aircraft Systems Club&nbsp;and&nbsp;the campus's Upward Bound&nbsp;program. Kiehlbauch said&nbsp;that the&nbsp;February&nbsp;event was a success. "Students came out and cooked some hot dogs and served popcorn with lemonade. We also had hands-on booths where students and their families could see and use some of our flight simulators, UAS equipment and more,"&nbsp;said&nbsp;Kiehlbauch.&nbsp;"The Sunset students got to go to the booths and learn about STEM education. Seeing all the cool things that our students get to use every day, I think, really excited and motivated the younger elementary students." Kiehlbauch wasn't the only one giving back at K-State Salina this past school year. Students from the campus's Alpha Eta Rho, an international co-ed aviation fraternity with more than 40 members on the campus, participated in six different&nbsp;service&nbsp;projects this past year. The projects ranged from helping first-year students move into the residence halls on campus in August to giving back to Salina businesses and organizations. Their tasks included volunteering at the Garage Automotive Museum and the Smoky Hill Museum&nbsp;street&nbsp;fair and&nbsp;parade. "This year, our fraternity members sat down and decided that we wanted to be a fixture in the Salina community more than ever," said&nbsp;Jack Valdez, senior in professional pilot,&nbsp;Olathe.&nbsp;"It was rewarding to get involved in the community this year and be a part of an organization that truly cares." Outside of giving back to the Salina community, these volunteer efforts also helped reinforce time management skills&nbsp;for&nbsp;K-State Salina students. Kiehlbauch&nbsp;said he&nbsp;recalls having to focus on&nbsp;these skills&nbsp;during&nbsp;the school year. On top of organizing numerous volunteer events, he is also a full-time student taking flight blocks and courses to become a pilot. Even with the long hours, Kiehlbauch said&nbsp;his experience from this past year was well worth the effort. With&nbsp;students successfully&nbsp;completing&nbsp;hundreds of hours&nbsp;of service work, the K-State Salina campus is expecting the list of projects to continue to grow into the next academic year. "We have found success in fostering a culture of giving back to our community," said Kyle Chamberlin, assistant dean of student life. "We want our students to feel a sense of ownership in finding and helping with these community service projects. With the sense of pride that has grown from this past year, we expect the number of hours and projects to continue to grow in the future."

K-State Salina students spend time giving back to local community

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged sex crimes.

Just after 5p.m. Wednesday, police arrested 24-year-old Chase Newberry, 24, of Manhattan was on&nbsp; Riley County District Court warrant for rape and two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 This warrant stems from a March 23, 2022, rape in Manhattan involving a now 20-year-old female victim. 

Newberry remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $50,000.&nbsp; &nbsp;Police released no additional details.

Veterans Alliance Memorial Day Program is Monday

The 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley will conduct the annual Memorial Day observance on Monday, May 29 at 11:40 a.m. at the Post Cemetery, 193 Huebner Rd.

The observance honors the men and women who died while serving in our country’s armed forces.

U.S. Senator Roger Marshall (Kansas) and Command Sgt. Maj. Chris Mullinax, 1st Infantry Division Command Sgt. Maj., will speak as part of the ceremony. Following the remarks, Maj. Gen. John V. Meyer, Commanding General of the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley, and Command Sgt. Maj. Mullinax will place a wreath in honor of those who have died while serving in our country’s armed forces.

The ceremony is open to the public; however, those without a Department of Defense ID card need to arrive early at the Henry Gate visitor control center (Exit 301 off I-70) to obtain a pass to the installation.

Fort Riley to host annual Memorial Day observance

Manhattan–&nbsp;Officials with the&nbsp;U.S. Department of Agriculture&nbsp;(USDA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)&nbsp;Science and Technology Directorate&nbsp;(S&amp;T) celebrated the dedication and ribbon-cutting of the&nbsp;National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility&nbsp;(NBAF) on Wednesday morning.

This is the first U.S. laboratory with biosafety level-4 containment capable of housing large livestock.&nbsp;

DHS S&amp;T and USDA have collaborated on the requirements for this next-generation science facility since 2006. DHS S&amp;T led NBAF’s design and construction, and USDA will own and operate the facility to protect the U.S. against transboundary and emerging animal diseases as well as zoonotic diseases capable of transferring from livestock to people.&nbsp;

The ceremony included remarks from many community, state and national leaders, including Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. &nbsp;

“This new, innovative facility will give USDA scientists access to cutting-edge, safe and secure technology so they can continue to lead the world in animal health research, training and diagnostics to protect our food supply, agricultural economy and public health,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “America’s farmers, ranchers and consumers count on our researchers and diagnosticians to understand, monitor for and develop solutions to combat a variety of high-consequence animal pathogens, and a facility of this magnitude positions us to respond.”&nbsp;

NBAF will replace DHS’ Plum Island Animal Disease Center (PIADC), which is a biosafety level-3 facility in New York that is more than 68 years old. Manhattan, Kansas was selected as NBAF’s site in 2009. With more than 400 employees, USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) will share NBAF’s operational responsibilities. These two agencies currently conduct research, training and diagnostic programs alongside DHS scientists at PIADC. &nbsp;

As part of the dedication program, Dr. Simon Liu, USDA Agricultural Research Service Administrator, led a moderated conversation with Jenny Lester Moffitt, USDA Marketing and Regulatory Programs Under Secretary; Dr. Chavonda Jacobs-Young, USDA Chief Scientist and Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics; and Julie Brewer, DHS S&amp;T Executive Director of Innovation &amp; Collaboration.&nbsp;

“NBAF’s Midwest location offers researchers and diagnosticians closer proximity to develop key partnerships with the animal health industry and several academic institutions,” said NBAF Director Dr. Alfonso Clavijo. “NBAF will create opportunities between scientists and animal health companies to enhance and expedite the transition of new veterinary countermeasures from research to market to protect the nation’s agriculture if needed.”&nbsp;

Adjacent to Kansas State University and on the Western edge of the largest concentration of animal health companies in the nation, the 48-acre NBAF campus includes more than 700,000 square feet of total building space. The main building, at 500,000 square feet, includes containment laboratories, animal holding facilities, office spaces, facility support areas and required safety systems — such as redundant HEPA air filtration and waste decontamination systems. &nbsp;

At NBAF, ARS will primarily focus on research to understand high-consequence and emerging animal diseases and develop countermeasures, such as vaccines and antivirals. APHIS will focus on prevention, surveillance, diagnosis and response to these diseases, including the expertise to manage two vaccine banks and train state and federal veterinarians to recognize livestock diseases.

🎥 Ribbon cutting celebrates National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility

Jasmine Palmer is the JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s Student of the Month For May.&nbsp; Jasmine is a Sophomore at JCHS.&nbsp; She is active in the advanced wind ensemble, advanced percussion ensemble, marching band, and pep band.&nbsp; One of her teachers stated that “Jasmine is one of the hardest working students I know. She is always looking for ways to help and is consistently cooperative, prepared, and positive.”

 Jasmine received a certificate from the club; a $25.00 gift certificate from JC’s BBQ &amp; Grill and a movie pass to the B&amp;B Theater.

Gunner Darnell was presented the $500.00 Lawrence Long Memorial Scholarship from the JC Breakfast Optimist Club.&nbsp; He will attend the North Central Kansas Technical College to study electrical technology.&nbsp; Gunner is a 2023 Junction City High School graduate and Eagle Scout with Troop 41. Lawrence Long was a long-time member of the JC Breakfast Optimist Club.&nbsp; The scholarship is in his honor. &nbsp;

A 2006 Toyota Corolla driven by Alexa Bell, 20, of Manhattan was northbound on the exit ramp from N. Seth Child to Kimball, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A bicyclist, William Kennedy, 80, of Manhattan switched lanes in front of the Toyota, This caused the car to hit the bicycle.

Kennedy was transported to Via Christi for treatment of shoulder, elbow, and hip injuries.

JUNCTION CITY - On Tuesday evening, the Junction City Police Department released information about a woman who has been reported missing.

Wilona Gouveia Torres, pictured above, was last seen around 12:00pm on Tuesday in the area of 1616 Clover Drive in Junction City.

Wilona was last seen wearing a burgundy shirt, blue capri pants, and rainbow colored slides.

According to JCPD, Wilona is a Hispanic female, stands 5'2" tall, weighs approximately 125 pounds, and has black/brown eyes.&nbsp;
