Gridiron Glory: Congratulations Chauncey Baxter!

The guest speaker at the January 11 “Gathering of Optimism” meeting was Deb Yocum, Vice President of Strategic Direction for Stormont Vail Hospitals. Deb stated that she is a “trained CPA who began work 36 years ago as the Vice President of Clinic Operations, but soon became involved in working through a merger like the recent one in Geary County.

County Commissioners and Geary Community Hospital staff sought ways to keep from losing one million dollars per month. After “looking behind every curtain, we believed we could turn things around. We assessed equipment, staffing, anesthesia machines, IT, billing, communication with patients and more”, she stated.

Stormont Vail Health vision statement embodies the foundation of the new partnership with Geary Community Health Clinic: to provide patients access to safe, high-quality health care services close to home. They are committed to integrating the Geary Community operations.

She went on to tell the Optimists that “Stormont continued all services that were at Geary Community except the Sleep Studies unit.” Additions may include cataract surgery, cardiology, an additional OB-GYN doctor and perhaps others. When considering staff, “they look for people who are nice” with strong people skills. People who show kindness.

Deb will be retiring soon and shared that “Tim Bergeron will retire from the US Army in April and has had extensive hospital management experience. He will be working with the team at Stormont Vail in Junction City. Tim served at Irwin Army Community Hospital in 2017.”

 Optimist Club hears from Stormont Vail Health

Junction City fire fighters responded to a house fire at 211 E. 5th Street Tuesday night. There was one occupant but there were not any injuries.

The cause of the blaze is undetermined at this time. The damage was placed at $5,000. According to the Fire Department a&nbsp; combination room - back porch area burned.

Pickleball will help feed the hungry in Junction City

There will not be any trash or garbage pick-up by the City of Junction City on Monday due to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. But trash will be picked up the next work day on Tuesday. That will move trash pick-up back one day for the remainder of the week.

Geary County Public Works will be closed on Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day. They will resume normal business hours on Tuesday.

The Geary County Transfer Station will remain open on Monday.

Public Works set  their holiday schedule

K-State Alumni Association President and CEO Amy Button Renz will retire from the K-State Alumni Association after more than 45 years of service to Kansas State University.

Her last day will be at end of the association’s fiscal year on June 30.

Renz began her career with the alumni association in 1977. She was named president and CEO in 1994, becoming the first female alumni director in the Big Eight (later the Big 12) conference.&nbsp;

Renz was instrumental in the creation of many programming efforts including the Student Alumni Board and the K-State Student Ambassadors. She served as the lead fundraiser for the Alumni Center building campaign. The $12.7 million facility was dedicated in October 2002. Additionally, she chaired search committees that brought several administrators to K-State — two athletic directors, John Currie and Gene Taylor, respectively, and Thomas Lane, vice president for student life and dean of students.

Under her leadership, the association has raised more than $6 million for student scholarships and recognition through the K-State License Plate program. Since 1996, the program has expanded to include four states. Additionally, the alumni association has raised more than $3.7 million for student scholarships through Wabash CannonBall galas in Kansas City, North Texas, Houston and Colorado.

She has served as a member of the CASE International Board of Trustees twice. In 1995, she received the District VI Distinguished Service Award from CASE. Additionally, Renz served as president of her peer organization the Council of Alumni Association Executives from 2001-2002.

Over the course of her career Renz has been recognized for her service and leadership many times. Some of her accolades include: In 2009 she received the Staley School of Leadership Mike Holen Outstanding Leadership Award. The K-State Marching Band selected her for the Directors Award in 2012. That same year, she was honored by K-State with the inaugural Amethyst Award, the highest honor bestowed by the university in recognition of extraordinary contributions. In 2014 she was named the Blue Key Oustanding Faculty Advisor. In 2016 she received the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Brandon L. Clark Alpha X-Cellence Award. In 2020, Renz was recognized with the Lyle Butler Distinguished Leadership Award from the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce.

Renz is a third-generation K-Stater. She earned two degrees from K-State, a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1976 and master’s degree in public administration in 1986. Her husband, Allen Renz is also a graduate of K-State, as are their three children. They have three grandsons and four granddaughters — including one K-State graduate and one current K-State student.

“I have given my decision considerable thought and while it is a bittersweet decision, as I truly love my job, I feel the time is right,” Renz said. “I want to spend more time with Allen and our family. Our grandchildren already have lots of plans to spend more time with us and we can’t wait! I have been blessed with a wonderful career at the K-State Alumni Association and have enjoyed my time here.”

K-State’s leadership offered the following congratulations to Renz for her upcoming retirement:

“Amy defines what it is to be a K-Stater. She has been an incredible champion for inspiring and cultivating lifelong connections between our alumni and our university, and her leadership and vision transformed our Alumni Association into what it is today, always holding the university’s traditions and values at its core. We couldn’t be more grateful for all she has accomplished in service of the spot she loves full well,” said K-State President Richard Linton.

“There is no one more passionate about K-State than Amy! She has been an excellent leader for the Alumni Association for many years. Her passion for creating a link for life for all K-Staters — prospective and current students, alumni and fans everywhere — has impacted thousands of people. Additionally, she has been a leader in alumni relations nationwide. Her expertise and counsel has benefited many other universities and associations. We congratulate her on all that has been accomplished over her 45 years with the Alumni Association,” said Candace Hart Duncan ’75, chair of the K-State Alumni Association board of directors.

“Amy epitomizes K-State and has made a lasting impact on our entire university community. The partnership we have with the Alumni Association has been nothing short of phenomenal and that is because of her leadership and love for her alma mater. Personally, I will forever be indebted to Amy as she served as the chair of the search committee that brought my family to K-State, which has enriched our lives in ways unimaginable. Renz to retire after over 45 years with K-State Alumni Association

Chuck Otte, who keeps Geary County weather records, said this week that the year 2022 weather can best be summarized as warmer and drier than normal. Ten our twelve months of the year had above normal temperatures and eight out of twelve had below normal precipitation.2022 started with a cold snap that brought us our first below zero temperature of the year on January 2nd and as the year drew to an end, we returned to subzero temperatures on the 22nd and 23rd. In between we had eight days with temperatures of 100 or above, which is just about what our long-term average indicates we should have.

The average daily high for 2022 was 66.8 degrees, one degree above normal. The average overnight low was 45.8, 1.8 degrees above normal. This resulted in a monthly mean temperature of 56.3, 1.4 degrees above the 30-year average and 1.6 degrees above the 70-year average. Since 1995, the 30-year average temperature has been steadily increasing, up 1.7 degrees in that 26-year span. The highest temperature for 2022 was 101 degrees, reached on 6 different days between mid-July and mid-August. The lowest temperature for the year was -9 on December 22nd. This gave us an annual temperature extreme of 110 degrees which is right on target with the 75-year average. Only November and December had monthly temperatures below normal. September had the greatest deviation from normal, coming in at 4.4 degrees above normal. 

The hottest year on record was in 1954 with an annual temperature of 59.7 degrees. The coldest year on record was in 1979 with an annual temperature of 50.5 degrees. The first half of 2022 showed us promise with total precipitation coming in one half inch above normal. Unfortunately, August, September and October came in well below normal giving us the last half of the year with a precipitation deficit of over 6 inches. The August and September deficits seriously hurt crop yields in the region. Average annual liquid precipitation (rainfall plus snow water equivalent) is 33.57 inches. Milford Lake tallied 27.94 inches of precipitation and Junction City slightly more at 29.15 inches. With rainfall records dating back over 90 years (starting in 1931) 2022 wasn’t close to being record dry. In fact, it came in at only 24th driest. The driest year on record was in 1966 when 15.61 inches of rainfall was recorded. The wettest year was the flood year of 1951 when 56.30 inches of rain inundated the region.

Snowfall totals are always problematic as the snowfall season is October to May, thereby lapping over the calendar year. For the snowfall season that ended in May of 2022 it was once again a very lackluster season for those that enjoy snow. Our seasonal average snowfall total is 18.1 inches. The 2021-2022 snowfall season came in a little under that at 14.9 inches of snowfall. The current, 2022-2023, snowfall season has not started well with only 2.5 inches of an average 4.8 through the end of December. Fortunately, there’s a lot of the season yet to go with January and February being the snowiest months of the year, on average, accounting for just over half of our seasonal snowfall totals. Temperatures are recorded at the Milford Lake Corps of Engineers Office.

NEW YORK (AP) —Bed Bath &amp; Beyond’s fiscal third-quarter sales fell by a third as the home goods company struggles to strike the right balance with its shoppers, a sign of its worsening outlook.

The company, which has already been cutting costs, said Tuesday it will slash an additional $80 million to $100 million across the company, including an unspecified number of layoffs. The retailer also added locations to the list of stores that will close. The store at 425 3rd Place in Manhattan and 3106 Iowa Street in Lawrence are on this list. The company, has 6 other stores in Kansas and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/locations/state/MO">12 in Missouri</a>.

Last week, Bed Bath &amp; Beyond cautioned that it&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-bankruptcy-875189eb9c27eac251670f80357c8ca3">may need to file for bankruptcy</a>&nbsp;protection as it struggles to attract shoppers. It then said that it’s considering options including selling assets or restructuring its business in bankruptcy court. But the chain acknowledged that even those efforts may not be successful.

Sales slid 33% to $1.26 billion for the three months ended Nov. 26 from $1.88 billion a year earlier. Sales at stores open at least a year, a key gauge of a retailer’s health, dropped 32%.

Analysts polled by Zacks Investment Research expected higher revenue of $1.43 billion.

While the quarterly performance was not a surprise given Bed Bath &amp; Beyond’s update on its results last week, Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData, said in statement that it’s still a bit of a shock and only adds to concerns about Bed Bath &amp; Beyond’s survival.

“A third of revenue has vanished, plunging an already beleaguered company into the depths of chaos,” he said.

President and CEO Sue Gove said in a prepared statement on Tuesday that the company is working on adjusting its merchandise and strategy, which has moved away from shoppers’ preferences.

“We want our customers to know that we hear them and are charging ahead every day to meet their needs,” she said.

The retailer lost $393 million, or $4.33 per share, in the quarter. That compares with a loss of $276.4 million, or $2.78 a year earlier.

Stripping out certain items, its adjusted loss was $3.65 per share. Wall Street was calling for a loss of $2.36 per share.

Bed Bath &amp; Beyond announced in August that it would&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stock-offerings-chewy-inc-6af2d83aec7cde2cd7b0706b892a4c0c">close stores and lay off workers</a>&nbsp;in a bid to turn around its business. It announced it would close about 150 of its namesakes stores and slashed its workforce by 20%. The company said Tuesday that it was on track to close the stores.

Saunders is not optimistic about the future of the retailer.

“In our view, Bed Bath &amp; Beyond has completely lost control and is in a tailspin; and with the ground fast approaching, survival now looks unlikely,” he said.

Shares of the Union, New Jersey-based company jumped 24% to $2.02 in afternoon trading.

It then said that it’s considering options including selling assets or restructuring its business in bankruptcy court. But the chain acknowledged that even those efforts may not be successful.Sales slid 33% to $1.26 billion for the three months ended Nov. 26 from $1.88 billion a year earlier. RILEY COUNTY—Police arrested a Riley County woman after a 2-vehicle crash that occurred just after 8a.m. Monday in Manhattan.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report a 2023 Kia Forte driven by Kezia Shibler, 26, of Riley, was southbound on Seth Child Road at Kimball Avenue.&nbsp;

A 2011 Toyota Prius driven by Alorrah Wileman, 19, of Manhattan pulled onto Seth Child Road from Gary Avenue in front of the Kia narrowly avoiding a crash. 

Shibler then sped up, passed the Prius, switched lanes to get in front of the Toyota then hit her brakes. This caused caused the Prius to rear-end the Kia. 

Following an investigation, police arrested Shibler on a requested charge of aggravated battery. She was issued a total bond of $5,000, and is no longer in custody. There were no major injuries reported, according to the RCPD.

The Geary County Transfer Station will start accepting credit / debit card payments on January 10, 2023. There is a processing fee of 3.25% that will be added to all transactions. All other forms of payment such as cash, check and charge accounts are still accepted at this time.

As a reminder, effective January 1, 2023, the Transfer Station saw an increase in tipping fees. The minimum fee for 500 pounds or less is $16.00 and the fee per ton is $64.00.

Ascher wants the county to get back with county road chip sealing. He also wants to work hard on funding that might be available for broadband internet to rural Geary County. "Because we really are lacking that." Redistricting will be another priority.

GEARY COUNTY —Two people died in an accident just before 7p.m. Monday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Chevy Cruze driven by Kelly E. Clements, 32, Fort Riley, was eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 just outside of Marshall Army Airfield and struck a 2017 Hyundai Elantra driven by Gary T. May, 76, Milford, head-on.

Clements was pronounced dead at the scene and she was transported to Johnson's Funeral Home. EMS transported May and a passenger in the Hyundai Donna E. May, 72, Milford, to the Stormont Flint Hills where she died. Clements was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

All westbound traffic on Interstate 70 near Fort Riley in Geary county were shut down for several hours due to the to the crash.

2 Kan. women dead after wrong-way, head-on I-70 crash

WASHINGTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating after seven deer were left to lay dead in a field in Washington County.

On January 4, a landowner reported at least five whitetail deer that had been shot with a small caliber rifle and left to lay in crop fields near Hanover Avenue and Yankee Road in Washington County, according to a social media report from Kansas Wildlife and Parks Game Wardens.

During their investigation, Game Wardens located two additional deer that had been shot and left lay. 

The deer were killed just outside the town of Hanover, with one of the deer less than 250 yards from two separate residences.

 It is believed the deer were killed the evening of January 2 or 3.

Geary County elected officials take their oaths of office

 For the second consecutive month, and only the second time in 2022, the area recorded below normal temperatures. Unfortunately we also returned to the below average precipitation that has plagued the region for most of 2022.The average daily high in December was 40.9, 1.6 degrees below normal. The average overnight low was 22.8, one tenth of a degree below normal. This gave us a monthly mean temperature of 31.9, 0.8 of a degree below normal. 

The region experienced a rather dramatic, but fortunately short-lived cold spell just before Christmas with a few evenings of below zero readings. The highest temperature for the month was 58 degrees reached, on the 13th and again on the 29th. The lowest temperature for the month was the -9 reading on the morning of the 22nd. There were two temperature records set for the month, both record high, overnight low temperatures. The low of 43 on the 12th broke the old record of 41 set in 1993. The low of 49 on the 13th broke the old record of 47 set in 2015. 

Fortunately the month was far from being record setting. The coldest December on record was in 1983 when we had a long frigid cold snap which resulted in a monthly mean temperature of only 13.6 degrees. That was the second all time coldest month on record. The all time coldest month was January 1979 with a monthly mean temperature of 12.1. The warmest December on record was just a year ago, December 2021, with a monthly mean temperature of 42.6.

While well below normal, the area did see some precipitation in December as well as enough snow that we were able to have a, barely, white Christmas. Average precipitation for December is 1.17 inches. Junction City recorded 0.57 inches and Milford Lake received 0.65 inches. This brought the year to a close with well below normal precipitation. Average annual precipitation is 33.57 inches. Junction City received 29.72 inches and Milford Lake 27.94 inches. The wettest December on record was in 2007 when an ice storm deposited 3.88 inches of precipitation on the area causing a great deal of ice damage to trees and power lines! The driest December on record was in 1976 and again in 2021 when no measurable precipitation was recorded.

 Just prior to the frigid weather’s arrival the area received 1.5 inches of snow which the cold temperatures allowed to stick around until after Christmas. This was less than one half of the normal December snowfall of 3.7 inches. It was also only the second snowfall recorded for the season. Season to date we have received 2.5 inches of snow, only half of our normal 4.8 inches through the end of December.

January is typically our coldest and driest month of the year. Average daily highs during January start the month around 38 and by the end of the month have risen to 42. Overnight lows on New Year’s Day are expected to be around 18 and by the end of the month have clawed their way up to about 20 degrees. Long term average January precipitation is 0.73 inches. Chuck Otte releases December weather summary

As realignment nears completion, Ebert Construction will be closing the existing portion of Quarry Road in Geary County on Tuesday, Jan. 10 to begin eradication of the old road.

Residents may use the new roads including Goldfinch Drive and Quarry Road. Goldfinch Drive runs from the west end of Mockingbird Road north to K-57 in Geary County. The new portion of

Quarry Road runs from the K-57/U.S. 77 junction to the existing Quarry Road. The Mockingbird Road/U.S. 77 entrance is scheduled to close later this winter.

All project work is scheduled for completion in October 2023, weather permitting.

KDOT news releaseAs realignment nears completion, Ebert Construction will be closing the existing portion of Quarry Road in Geary County on Tuesday, Jan. 10 to begin eradication of the old road.Residents may use the new roads including Goldfinch Drive and Quarry Road. Goldfinch Drive runs from the west end of Mockingbird Road north to K-57 in Geary County. The new portion ofQuarry Road runs from the K-57/U.S. 77 junction to the existing Quarry Road. The Mockingbird Road/U.S. 77 entrance is scheduled to close later this winter.All project work is scheduled for completion in October 2023, weather permitting.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal shooting in Manhattan have made another arrest.

Just after 3a.m. Saturday, Junction City police arrested 24-year-old Jordan Prather of Junction City on a Riley County District Court warrant for first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault, according to the Riley County Police Dept. activity report.

These charges were brought by the Riley County Attorney's Office for Prather's involvement in the homicide of Joshua Wardi on February 5, 2022.&nbsp;

At that time, RCPD officers working in the police substation in Aggieville heard gunshots. The officers immediately responded in the direction of the gunfire that occurred outside a bar near 12th and Moro Street, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.&nbsp; Officers found a 21-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. They also observed an armed man nearby who ran from the area. Two officers chased the suspect on foot, while the third officer remained with the shooting victim and rendered first-aid.

The victim was later identified as Joshua J. Wardi, 21, of Fort Riley. Preliminary information indicated that as the armed suspect fled, he turned the corner onto 12th Street. During the foot chase, one of the RCPD officers fired two rounds at the suspect, striking him in the leg, and causing him to stop part way down the block, between Moro Street and Laramie Street.

Officers secured the handgun and provided medical assistance. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

The shooting suspect was identified as Tremelle R. Montgomery, 19, of Fort Riley. EMS transported him to Ascension Via Christi hospital in Manhattan where he was then transferred to a Topeka hospital. Wardi was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The investigation suggests that earlier Friday night Wardi and Montgomery patronized the same bar in Aggieville. Later, while visiting outside in separate groups of friends, they engaged in a verbal altercation. At that time witnesses say Montgomery pulled out a gun and shot Wardi. Montgomery remains jailed in Riley County, according to online jail records.

On Friday, officers filed a report for theft at Randolph Middle School, 2 Ram Way, in Randolph, according to the Riley County County Police Department activity report. 

The Blue Valley School District and Thermal Comfort Air reported a known male suspect stole a check the school had written to Thermal Comfort Air and cashed it. The estimated total loss is approximately $45,300. Police released no additional information early Monday.
