Over the last 10 years, volunteers for Operation Clean Sweep have removed 15.42 tons of trash from Junction City.

If possible, help the city plan for the event by pre-registering.

Just after 3:30p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for fraud in Manhattan. A 27-year-old man reported he was scammed by an unknown suspect into depositing a forged check and sending them the money online, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The weekend is expected to bring several chances of welcome moisture to the Flint Hills, the National Weather Service in Topeka said.

There is a 20 percent to 30 percent chance of rain beginning Thursday night and lasting into Monday — when that rain could turn into a wintry mix.

Winds will remain calmer, sustained at 5 to 10 mph through the weekend.

Daytime highs Friday through Sunday are expected to be in the upper-40s to mid-50s, with overnight lows right around the freezing point.

The Junction City Little Theater production of "Arcadia" has been selected as a potential play to represent Kansas at the American Association of Communitty Theatre <a href="https://aact.org/">(AACT) </a>Regional Festival in Salina this April 21st through 23rd.

This coming Sunday (March 26th) at 3 p.m. the JCLT actors and crew that worked on the production for its recent run at the C.L. Hoover Opera House will come together one more time for a shorter 1-hour version of Arcadia called a "competion cut," according to Director Britain Stites.  This will be viewed by an AACT adjudicator (judge) to decide whether the JCLT production or a Theatre Atchison, KS play will represent Kansas at the regional festival.  "We can show on a state and possibly a regional stage what kind of art, creativity and talent we have in this community," Stites said.

An audience for the special 3 p.m. Sunday performance is encouraged and while there will be no admission a free will donation will be requested to help defray the cost of rights and travel for the festival.

The Geary County Historical Society will host their annual Bingo at the Museum game night, Friday March 31st. This annual fundraiser includes a chili feed that begins at 5:30 p.m. and an evening of Bingo games beginning at 6:30 p.m.. All prizes were donated by local businesses. Meals of chili, drink and dessert will be $5 and reusable Bingo cards will be sold for $5 or 3 for $10. All proceeds from the event benefit the Geary County Historical Society.

During the months of October through May the JC Breakfast Optimist Club recognizes a Junction City High School (JCHS) Student for the student’s optimistic approach to learning, improving themselves, and being a positive influence on others at school and in the community.

This month’s recipient is Morgan Nabus.

Dana Wiegand, the local Optimist Club’s Student of the Month Coordinator, stated that Moran is a 9th grader at JCHS and is in the Student 2 Student Leadership Advisory program. She has been active is active in the Freshman Committee, Lady Jays Volleyball, Basketball, and softball teams.

Morgan’s teachers stated that Morgan is “an absolute pleasure to have in class. She is always respectful, hardworking, quietly hilarious, supportive of her peers, competitive, and holds herself to very high standards. She is always the first person willing to help, is kind and patient with new students, takes care of all of her school work and knows how to make people around her relax and have fun.”

Another teacher stated that “Morgan is patient, kind and supportive and demonstrates a level of compassion and thoughtfulness often not seen in students her age. Moran is always up for a challenge and is conscientious about the quality of her work.”

Morgan told the Optimist Club members that she “plans on studying in the medical field when she graduates from high school. This may lead to her becoming a doctor in a specific area.” She has not made a complete decision about that being a freshman in high school.

Morgan is the daughter of Lisa and Randy Nabus. Both parents grew up in Junction City and are JCHS graduates. Moran received a $25.00 gift certificate from JC’s BBQ &amp; Grill and a movie pass to the B&amp;B Theaters in Junction City.

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club meets every Wednesday at the Hampton Inn located at 1039 S. Washington Street. A breakfast buffet is provided to potential members who attend a meeting for the first time. The buffet is open at 6:30 a.m. and the meeting begins at 6:50 and ends at 7:30 a.m..

The contest is open to all children and youth of services members, active duty, National Guard, Reserve, and retirees, enrolled in Army CYS Programs.&nbsp;

Prizes will be given to one overall winner and the top entries in each category. The overall prize is a $1,500 Exchange gift card. Other prizes are Exchange gift cards that range from $150 to $700. All winners will also receive a Certificate of Achievement. Winners will be announced during the month of June.

The Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce will host a legislative coffee this weekend.

2023 Lady Jays youth softball camp is right around the corner

ELLSWORTH COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after 9:30a.m. Wednesday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Toyota Highlander driven by&nbsp; Donald J. Svita, 70, Pueblo, Colorado, was eastbound on Kansas 140 at Kansas 156, a mile and a half south of Ellsworth.

Moving to Kansas from the Philippines is a huge undertaking and full

They not only helped them find housing, but they also turned the house 
into a home by getting all of the items needed for it to be move-in 
ready. A list of more than 50 items was posted and in less than 24 hours
 Flint Hills team members had signed up to donate everything from a 
washer and dryer to pots and pans. 

The new team members were met at the 
airport in Kansas City and welcomed by Ruth Dela Cruz, Regional Manager

Stormont Vail team 'clears the list' to welcome international lab techs

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (AP) — Two people arrested over the weekend in Michigan have been charged with killing a Kansas couple while stealing their car.

Online court records show that 33-year-old Steven Pierce was charged Tuesday and 29-year-old Kallie Peters on Monday with two counts of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery and theft. Both are from Junction City, Kansas. No attorney is listed for them in the online records.

The victims in the case were identified as 75-year-old Valerie Krissman and 80-year-old Roland Krissman.

The complaint said that the killing happened earlier this month in Junction City during the theft of the Krissman's 2006 Buick Lacrosse.

Junction City police said in a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/JCPDKS/posts/pfbid02sZC8tbqpZgNdXTxXGw4WPBAXkFSziM6tKtcN6yeSTVd9UYsfYujg1okbe2SRV84rl">news release</a>&nbsp;the Michigan State Patrol arrested Pierce and Peters on warrants Sunday.

No other details were immediately released about the killing. The prosecutor's office didn't immediately return a phone message.

Just before 3:30p.m. Tuesday, officers&nbsp;filed a report for criminal damage to property and theft in the 500 block of Richards Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Little Apple Lanes reported an unknown male suspect broke into a pool table and stole money.&nbsp; The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $600.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University is receiving the 
New Partner Award from the U.S. Department of State for expanding the 
U.S. partner base and advancing U.S. foreign policy objectives and 
educational exchange through the university's participation in the 
Online Professional English Network.

Ketty Reppert, interim director of K-State's <a href="https://www.k-state.edu/elp/">English Language Program</a>,
 will accept the award on behalf of the university Thursday, March 23, 
at the 2023 Teachers of English to Speaker of Other Languages, or TESOL,
 International Convention in Portland, Oregon.

The <a href="https://exchanges.state.gov/non-us/program/OPEN-Program">Online Professional English Network</a>,
 or OPEN, program provides an opportunity for U.S. universities and 
institutions to expand their reach to a global audience and create 
innovative online course programming for teacher professional 
development and English for specific purposes.

"It's an honor to work with an amazing team pulling together the 
expertise of faculty and staff from many parts of the university to 
design courses that address significant issues of public need in 
communities worldwide," said Reppert. "We're excited to see how the most
 recent course impacts the classrooms of English teachers in various 
countries and equips them to empower their students to take on the 
challenge of climate change beginning in their local communities."

The English Language Program at K-State has worked with international nonprofit <a href="https://www.fhi360.org/">FHI 360</a>
 to develop several openly licensed courses for the OPEN program as part
 of the U.S. State Department's initiatives worldwide. Courses include 
English for Public Policy, Keys to Diplomatic Writing, English for 
Aviation and Teaching for the Future: English Teaching to Take on 
Climate Change.

Reppert said so far, these projects have benefited civil servants and
 diplomats in Africa and aviation personnel in South America.&nbsp;

"The team from the English Language Program worked with partners from
 across Kansas State University on these projects," said Reppert. 
"Together we used our strengths and areas of expertise to tackle the 
many types of tasks required to develop quality content for use around 
the world. We all grew throughout this process, and it's an honor to be 
recognized for this work."&nbsp;

The English Language Program is an intensive language program at 
K-State that strives to provide English instruction to students who are 
admitted to a degree program but have not demonstrated the English 
proficiency required for enrollment in academic courses. The program 
also offers English instruction to international students and 
professionals who to come to focus on language training or as a study 
abroad experience.

"It's inspiring to see how passionate K-Staters are about harnessing 
their research and teaching skills to advance the service mission of the
 university and how dedicated they are to sharing their expertise with 
the international community," said Reppert.

For more than 10 years, The Online Professional English Network 
program has reached hundreds of thousands of English language learners, 
teachers and other professionals in more than 150 countries. The program
 has strengthened English language teaching in classrooms worldwide,

The Geary County 4-H/Senior Citizens Building Committee has announced plans to host their annual fundraiser for the building this coming Saturday March 25th starting at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $15.00 and can be purchased from the Geary County K-State Research and Extension Office, at the Geary County Senior Citizens office, from a building committee member or at the door.

The event, themed “Back to our Roots”, will consist of a catered dinner from 6:00 to 6:45 p.m., followed by both silent and live auction items. Proceeds will go toward building improvements and upgrades.

Constructed in 1978, the 4-H/Senior Citizens Building is used by a multitude of local groups, including the Senior Citizen Center, 4-H, and more. The building is also available to rent for private events through the Extension Office. Funded entirely through rentals and annual fundraiser, the building and surrounding facilities are governed by local leaders and volunteers.
