According to the Public Works Department trash/garbage removal will be picked up the next workday as follows:

Monday’s pickup day will be Tuesday, July 6th

Tuesday’s pickup day will be Wednesday, July 7th

Wednesday’s pickup day will be Thursday, July 8th

Thursday’s pickup day will be Friday, July 9th

Friday’s pickup day will be Saturday, July 10th

To ensure pick-up your trash should be set out by 6 AM, Tuesday morning.

Pubic Works releases the July 4th sanitation schedule

Junction City Main Street has invited graphic designers, artists and creative professionals to participate in a competition to create the organization's logo.&nbsp;

Submissions are due by midnight July 31st. The board of directors will select the top two or three entries and allow the community to vote for the favored logo during the month of August. The winning selection will be announced at the Sept. 2nd board meeting. Designers of each of the two or three entries selected for community voting will receive $150.

Junction City was established at the confluence of the Republican and Smoky Hill rivers and formed the Kansas (or Kaw) River. It is an historic, frontier town with roots in cattle drives and railroad construction. Located along the western edge of the Flint Hills. One of the vital elements of its past and future is its proud connection with the Fort Riley U.S. Army Base, the home of the 1st Infantry Division, the Big Red 1.

Geary County, where Junction City is located, is the fifth most diverse county in Kansas (out of 105 counties) and is a county with the second largest share of its population under 17 years of age. Residents are proud of the history, affiliation with the military, diversity, and renewed vibrancy of Junction City.

Designers are encouraged to pull inspiration from these elements in coming up a with a unique, interesting, and fun logo that embodies Junction City’s spirit, history, and outlook for the future. The board seeks a one-of-a-kind feel that can serve Junction City for several years.

The scholarships are available to both part-time and full-time students to provide more individuals the opportunity to earn a degree at their own pace. Online students receive scholarships from Kansas State University

MANHATTAN, Kan. July 2, 2021— Kansas 4-H hosted Discovery Days, a signature program for career exploration, using a blended learning platform in June. During the four day event, more than 100 Kansas 4-H youth around the state, ages 13-18, participated in interactive virtual sessions about college readiness and industry engagement.

Kansas 4-H partnered with the Kansas Department of Agriculture to reach more 4-H members through volunteer engagement in virtual sessions and providing funds for career exploration curriculum and kits for participants. The career exploration activities reached more than 1,700 youth and empowered them to discover interests and think about future careers.

“The Kansas Department of Agriculture is proud to support 4-H Discovery Days and the opportunities it presents to engage young people in meaningful career exploration,” said Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam. “The future of Kansas agriculture will rely on a talented, accomplished workforce, and we know from experience that the skills learned in 4-H help youth develop into the leaders and citizens who will make up the backbone of that future.”

In addition to the philanthropic partnership with the Kansas Department of Agriculture, Kansas 4-H expanded their academic partnership with Kansas State University to include teaching and learning partners from all nine colleges, the Staley School of Leadership Studies and the Career Center.

“Discovery Days at Kansas State University has been a historical pillar for generations illustrating the partnership between 4-H Youth Development programs and K-State for 98 years introducing youth to their next career and educational steps in 4-H project interest areas,”

Manhattan— Authorities say a Friday morning fire in Manhattan was accidental.

Just after 8a.m., the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to 1621 Woodcrest Drive for a report of a fire in the garage, according to Deputy Chief Ryan Almes.

Upon arrival, crews found a one-story structure with light smoke showing. The fire was knocked down within five minutes.. No injuries were reported. The one-story building contains three townhomes.&nbsp; The fire was contained to one home with only smoke damage in the other two units. Loss is estimated at $20,000 to contents and $20,000 to the structure. The owner is listed as Judy Roland of the same address. The fire cause is accidental due to self-heating of stain-soaked rags.

Geary County Sheriff Department reports show that Deputies responded to K-177 Highway at mile marker 85 Thursday afternoon for a single semi-trailer injury rollover accident. Farhan Mohamud Mohamed, Louisvlle, KY, was traveling in a Freightliner when it left the roadway and overcorrected, then rolled over and skidded towards a barb wire fence.

Farhan denied any injury and refused medical services on scene. The semi-truck had disabling damage and was towed away by TLC Wrecker.

Initial numbers would include a main floor holding a maximum of 2,600 people which does not however, include second floor private boxes that would also be available for events. There would be 5-6 restaurants, four or more bars, food trucks and trailers plus an elevated concert stage.

Godfrey put the initial concept price tag at $10 million. He said the project will absolutely happen.

Junction City Main Street Interim Director Jerry Lonergren said the project will kick start downtown revitalization. "What the downtown wants to create is a synergy where people want to come downtown, want to see downtown, want to spend money downtown."

Cecil Aska received the Outstanding Citizenship Award , Leon Osbourn the Eldon L. Hoyle Economic Development Award, and Terrah Stroda the Mayor's Community Impact honor.

The Seitz Family Military Community Award went to Phyllis Fitzgerald, Business Resiliency honor to Beverly Davis of Magnolia's Boutique and the Community Resiliency Award to USD 475. Representing the district were Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Eggleston, Associate Superintendent Dr. Deb Gustafson and Board of Education President Dr. Anwar Khoury.

Chamber of Commerce honors community leaders

There have been a small number of the COVID-19 Delta variant reported in Geary County. Health Officer Tammy Von Busch said based on information from the Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment there were three breakthrough cases. "Meaning that they have been vaccinated, they are past their two weeks post-vaccination so they should be considered completely covered but they have come down with the Delta variant."

Von Busch noted that vaccines are extremely effective but you always run a risk of falling in the five or six percent group that do not have complete vaccine coverage.

There have been four cases in youth under the age of 18, and none of them had been completely vaccinated, said Von Busch.&nbsp; "It's extremely important to get vaccinated. The only way that we're going to be able to protect the community, protect ourselves and hopefully prevent any variance from developing."&nbsp;

Symptoms with the Delta variant are similar to those with the initial COVID-19.

There will be public events on the July 4th weekend. Could the Delta variant spread? Von&nbsp; Busch said it's possible. "It could, yeah, absolutely. We still don't have herd immunity in the community so it's important that people take the necessary precautions. Wear a mask if you are around people you don't know or aren't vaccinated, practice the social distancing and hand washing and all the necessary precautions that we've been stressing the whole time through this pandemic."&nbsp;

Von Busch added that if anyone is sick, regardless of whether it is or is not COVID-19, stay home.&nbsp;

COVID-19 Delta variant is confirmed in Geary County

May was cool and wet. The first of June arrived, a switch was flipped and it suddenly became summer with hot and dry conditions. Had it not been for some rainy and cooler weather the last week of June it would have been a very dry month and likely a record hot June!

Chuck Otte, Geary County Extension Agent said that the average daily high for June was 88 degrees, 2.9 degrees above normal. The average overnight low was 67.3, 3.2 degrees above normal. This gave&nbsp; a monthly mean temperature of 77.6, 3 degrees above normal. The morning low of 57 degrees on June 2nd was the lowest temperature for the month. The highest temperature for the month was the high of 101 on the 17th and 18th. 

The 101 reading on the 17 also broke the record high for that date. The previous record was 100 degrees set in 1953 and reached again in 1959. The high of 100 on the 16th was the first time since we hit 102 on July 7, 2018 that we reached 100 or above, a span of 1,075 days. The high of 100 on June 16th was also 120 days after we had a morning low of -18 on February 16th, a temperature spread of 118 degrees. The hottest June on record was in 1953 with a monthly mean temperature of 83 degrees. The coldest June on record was in 1982 with a monthly mean temperature of a pleasant, or chilly, 67.8 degrees.

After having 8 consecutive days of measurable rainfall in May (and 17 out of 31 days for the month), we went 22 days with no rain in June. June is historically our second wettest month but we came up very short this year. Average June rainfall is 4.84 inches. Milford Lake received 1.27 inches for the month and Junction City received 2.08 inches. For the first half of the year, average precipitation is 16.96 inches. So far in 2021 Milford Lake has received 13.42 inches and Junction City 17.80 inches. The driest June on record was in 1966 when 0.20 inches was all that was recorded. The wettest June on records was the year just prior to that, 1965, when 11.90 inches deluged the area.

July is our hottest month of the year. Average daily high temperatures during July don’t change very much running about 90 degrees through the whole month. Likewise overnight low temperatures don’t vary much running in the upper 60s from the 1st to the 31st. Looking at long term records we find that daily highs peak about the 18th or 19th of the month and then slowly start to go down. Rainfall generally decreases slightly during July but thunderstorms still bring us an average of 4.14 inches for the month.

The highest temperature for the month was the high of 101 on the 17th and 18th. The 101 reading on the 17 also broke the record high for that date. The previous record was 100 degrees set in 1953 and reached again in 1959. The high of 100 on the 16th was the first time since we hit 102 on July 7, 2018 that we reached 100 or above, a span of 1,075 days. The high of 100 on June 16th was also 120 days after we had a morning low of -18 on February 16th, a temperature spread of 118 degrees. The hottest June on record was in 1953 with a monthly mean temperature of 83 degrees. The coldest June on record was in 1982 with a monthly mean temperature of a pleasant, or chilly, 67.8 degrees. After having 8 consecutive days of measurable rainfall in May (and 17 out of 31 days for the month), we went 22 days with no rain in June. June is historically our second wettest month but we came up very short this year. Average June rainfall is 4.84 inches. Milford Lake received 1.27 inches for the month and Junction City received 2.08 inches. For the first half of the year, average precipitation is 16.96 inches. So far in 2021 Milford Lake has received 13.42 inches and Junction City 17.80 inches. The driest June on record was in 1966 when 0.20 inches was all that was recorded. The wettest June on records was the year just prior to that, 1965, when 11.90 inches deluged the area. July is our hottest month of the year. Average daily high temperatures during July don’t change very much running about 90 degrees through the whole month. Likewise overnight low temperatures don’t vary much running in the upper 60s from the 1st to the 31st. Looking at long term records we find that daily highs peak about the 18th or 19th of the month and then slowly start to go down. Rainfall generally decreases slightly during July but thunderstorms still bring us an average of 4.14 inches for the month.

In February, officials in Geary County charged Martino, a former trainer at Junction City High School with two counts of sexual exploitation of a child and two counts of promoting obscenity to minors.

&nbsp;A student patient under age 18 received sexually explicit text messages from Martino, including a nude image of himself, <a href="http://www.ksbha.org/boardactions/Documents/martino_21.pdf">according to the order </a>from the Kansas Board of Healing Arts.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a case of of alleged criminal damage at a cosmetology school in Manhattan.

Just before 2p.m. Wednesday, police filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 1100 block of Westloop Place in Manhattan.

Bellus Academy reported an unknown suspect damaged multiple HVAC units on the roof of the school, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. Authorities are still working to determine the estimated total loss for the damage.&nbsp; Police released no additional details Thursday morning.

 Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded Wednesday afternoon to the 800 block of Old Highway 77 for a single vehicle injury accident. The Sheriff's Department reported that David Laster, Junction City, was traveling in a Toyota Camry when he fell asleep.

The vehicle left the roadway and proceeded through a tree line, barbed wire fence and a chain-linked fence. Laster complained of pain but refused medical services on scene. The vehicle sustained disabling damage and was towed away by Homestead Wrecker.

Deputies respond to one vehicle accident

(WIBW) - The passing of former U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld hits close to home for a current and a former Kansas leader.

Kansas State University President Richard Myers served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under Rumsfeld. The retired four-star General in the Air Force worked alongside Rumsfeld from the earliest stages of the War on Terror, including the planning and execution of the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

“Former secretary of defense Donald Rumsfeld played a pivotal role during a crucial time in American history,” Myers said in a statement to 13 NEWS. “We remember him for his devotion and service to our country in times of crisis. As a leader, he demanded candor from those around him and respected those who served their country in and out of uniform.”

Former Kansas Secretary of Administration and Topeka City Manager Dan Stanley also was saddened to hear of Rumsfeld’s passing. Stanley served as Assistant Secretary of Defense under Rumsfeld, working as one his top aides.

Rumsfeld’s family&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wibw.com/2021/06/30/former-sec-defense-donald-rumsfeld-dies-88/" target="_blank">announced his death Wednesday</a>. He was 88 years old.

There is not a full blown Sundown Salute celebration this year but two rides and a funnel cake trailer are set up for this week on Jefferson Street between 6th and 7th Streets.

The rides and funnel cake trailer will be in operation from 6-10 p.m. Thursday, 1-10 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 1-10 p.m. Sunday.&nbsp;

Ottaway Amusements will take down the carnival equipment Sunday night and Monday.

Sundown Salute will have a small number of rides

Work resumes Thursday to determine the cause of the brown water problem on the west side of Junction City. Much of the problem was corrected with&nbsp; the flushing of hydrants, but Public Works indicated there still could be some scattered locations where the problem still existed.

Junction City Public Works Director Ray Ibarra said Wednesday afternoon that the portion of the city where brown water has been experienced is on the high system side in the area served by the two water towers. The area includes west Junction City including the west central portion of town plus west of U.S. 77 , south of 6th Street and east of Jackson Street.

Flushing of hydrants has been under way and Ibarra is hopeful the problem can be resolved by Wednesday evening. Flushing of the hydrants will clear out the brown colored water. There was no loss of water pressure. The specific cause of the problem is unknown.

Magnet Program will hold a summer session

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A new state law lowering the state’s concealed carry age to 18 takes effect Thursday, July 1, with proponents arguing it’s a valid law with proper training.

Governor Laura Kelly&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wibw.com/2021/05/03/kansas-concealed-carry-age-moving-to-18/" target="_blank">vetoed the bill in early May</a>&nbsp;but lawmakers overrode her objections.

Gun Garage Owner Floyd McMillin said if someone can serve in the military at 18, they should be able to choose if they want to openly carry a firearm.

“Don’t matter if they’re 18, 26, 86, it’s part of our right,” he said. “If they can go over there and shoot and defend our country and they can run guns and do everything they need to do in the military, then I think they have the right to do it here on our own land.”

The Kansas legislature voted in favor of a law that lowers the age to carry a firearm from 21 to 18.

Iron Rail to donate $1 of every pint of new Holliday Lager sold to Military Veterans Project

(RILEY COUNTY, KS – June 30, 2021) Riley County has identified 24 new positive Coronavirus cases and 28 additional recoveries since the last report on June 23, 2021.&nbsp;

The percent of positive cases for the week of June 20th was 5.2%. That translates to 30 of the 580 tests performed coming back positive.&nbsp;

Four COVID-positive patients are currently under care at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. Two patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).&nbsp;

In Riley County, since February, there has been a total of 31 positive cases from&nbsp;<a href="https://gmail.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=95221c46aac4689e49a7c0bfc&amp;id=9e54759258&amp;e=fd06d17886" target="_blank">variants of concern</a>. Nineteen of the cases are from the B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant, 11 cases from the B.1.1.7 (Alpha) variant, and one from the B.1.429 (Epsilon) variant.&nbsp;

As the Delta variant becomes more prevalent throughout the United States, it is important to know the variant is estimated to be 75% more contagious than the original strain. In addition, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is the “fastest and fittest” variant.&nbsp;

“The new variant is spreading quickly. Continue to wash your hands, wear your mask in crowded settings, especially if you are not vaccinated, and practice social distancing when you can,” explains Riley County Health Department Director Julie Gibbs.&nbsp;

There has been an additional seven confirmed vaccine breakthrough cases in Riley County. (RILEY COUNTY, KS – June 30, 2021) Riley County has identified 24 new positive Coronavirus cases and 28 additional recoveries since the last report on June 23, 2021.&nbsp;The percent of positive cases for the week of June 20th was 5.2%. That translates to 30 of the 580 tests performed coming back positive.&nbsp;Four COVID-positive patients are currently under care at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. Two patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).&nbsp;In Riley County, since February, there has been a total of 31 positive cases from&nbsp;<a href="https://gmail.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=95221c46aac4689e49a7c0bfc&amp;id=9e54759258&amp;e=fd06d17886" target="_blank">variants of concern</a>. Nineteen of the cases are from the B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant, 11 cases from the B.1.1.7 (Alpha) variant, and one from the B.1.429 (Epsilon) variant.&nbsp;As the Delta variant becomes more prevalent throughout the United States, it is important to know the variant is estimated to be 75% more contagious than the original strain. In addition, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is the “fastest and fittest” variant.&nbsp;“The new variant is spreading quickly.
