The Department of the Army has named Fort Riley as a 2021 Army Partnership Award winner. The Army selected seven installations and neighboring communities for demonstrating partnerships that improve quality of life, enhance Army readiness and modernize Army processes, while building stronger community relationships.

Fort Riley and Unified School District 475, Geary County, were recognized for a demolition Intergovernmental Support Agreement. The agreement provides for the demolition of the former Jefferson and Fort Riley Elementary School buildings on post, with a cost savings of more than $190-thousand to the Army. The school district saves costs by making use of the Fort Riley construction and debris landfill. The partnership also eliminates an unsightly structure and safety hazard near a housing area.

At the time of the agreement’s signing in August, Col. Will McKannay, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Riley commander, said, “We’re excited for this new partnership that paves the way for Fort Riley and USD 475 to share resources and services in order to accomplish much need work on Fort Riley.”

Dr. Reginald Eggleston, USD 475 Superintendent, expressed appreciation for the partnership with Fort Riley, saying, “Working together on projects like this demonstrates a unit of effort toward supporting our families and students. Additionally, it also demonstrates good stewardship of resources.”

Dr. Anwar Khoury, USD 475 Board of Education President, added, “The agreement between the district and Fort Riley demonstrates a strong partnership that serves the region.”

The Army Partnership Awards Program seeks to highlight examples of exceptional cooperation and diligence that will encourage continued collaboration to achieve the full potential of community partnerships.

Fort Riley and USD 475 earn Army Partnership Award

Geary County Republican Central Committee members voted unanimously, 17-0, on the first ballot in a convention Tuesday night to recommend to Governor Kelly that Sherri Childs become the next Geary County Treasurer. Childs would succeed Kathy Tremont, who has announced her retirement. The Governor has seven days to make the appointment official.

Childs has served in the Treasurer's office for 40 years, including the past 28 as office manager. She is a little bit stunned to be moving up to the Treasurer's role. "It was a hard decision on my part. I have no problem doing the job. I just didn't know if I was really wanting to take that next step. Guess I do, so here I go."

Republican Central Committee Chair Tod Godfrey said in the convention one delegate nominates a person, a second delegate seconds the nomination. "Sherri Childs was the only nomination that was received." Godfrey noted that the entire convention lasted about 15 minutes.&nbsp;

Godfrey explained that Childs thanked the delegates for voting her into the treasurer's post and the confidence shown by the Geary County Republican Central Committee. "And we also acknowledged Kathy Tremont at the convention as well for the 44 years of service to the citizens of Geary County."

Tremont recently announced her retirement, effective Feb. 1. Childs confirmed that Tremont will remain in the office until then to help with the transition.&nbsp;

Childs said her own duties will remain about the same. " I won't do as much bookwork but I'll be more involved in some of the distributions and a little bit more of the tax side than I have been. "

Republican Central Committee recommends Sherri Childs for County Treasurer

DICKINSON COUNTY - Law enforcement authorities are investigating a missing person and asking the public for help in locating a missing Enterprise, Kansas man.

In January of 2019 Alex Michael Head, 34, of Enterprise, was reported missing. Since that time, efforts to locate Head and his vehicle have been unsuccessful, Dickinson County Sheriff Jerry Davis said in a news release Tuesday.

Head was last seen on Jan. 14, 2019, in Dickinson County. He was driving a silver in color 2003 Dodge Durango. The vehicle had a unique United States Air Force decal affixed to the rear window. 

According to Davis, Head’s disappearance is suspicious in nature and investigators suspect that at least one person knows of his whereabouts or what happened to Head and his vehicle.

While previous media reports have stated that Head was last seen driving westbound toward Salina, there are no records, evidence, or information obtained during this investigation that supports that theory, according to the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office.

Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce is seeking to fill membership advisory committee openings for 2022.

You can become involved in Chamber activities and initiatives, an opportunity to make suggestions and improvements, support other Chamber members and be engaged in the business community.

Applications are due by noon on Dec. 14. Email questions and applications to dawn@jcacc.org. The applications will be reviewed by the current advisory committee and then confirmed by the Chamber Board of Directors during their December meeting.

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran has announced a $1,594,970 U.S. Department of Agriculture investment in eight Kansas small and midsized meatpackers through the Meat and Poultry Inspection Readiness Grant program.&nbsp; The program was created by Sen. Moran's legislation for the plants to make the necessary investments to become federally inspected. Currently, meatpacking facilities can only make sales across state lines if they are federally inspected.

Two facilities in east central Kansas are on the list to receive funds including Alta Vista Locker in Alta Vista to support modernization of facilities to improve the safety and speed of the slaughter process, and Dieck's Inc. in Clay Center to increase production of raw and further processed meats,&nbsp; and help to obtain federal grant of inspection, allowing local producers to broaden markets.

Central National Bank in Junction City has presented a check for $27,448.03 to the United Way of Junction City - Geary County in support of their 2022 campaign. Bank staff spent October raising funds for United Way.

"It is a true joy to be a part of this team and lead the efforts of our employees," said Amanda Rolfs, Marketing Manager and captain of the United Way team at Central National Bank. "Of course, we have fun coming together for the good of Junction City, but my colleagues also recognize the true impact their efforts have on the well-being of our community. I think that's why they continue to step up, year after year, to make a difference in Geary County."

2021 marks the fifteenth year in a row that Central National Bank has been named a Platinum Pacesetter, a designation given to organizations who raise over $15,000 in funds for the campaign.

"As a community bank, we recognize the importance of giving back to our community, " said Lindsey Snider, Central National Bank, Junction City President. " Each year the staff does a tremendous job with the United Way campaign here at Central National Bank, Junction City. This year's campaign total of $27,448.03 was a huge team effort."&nbsp;

The House of Ruth thanks Community Partners in the 2021 Winter Coat Drive for Kids

All Geary County Offices will be closed on Thursday, November 25, and Friday, November 26, 2021 in observance of the Thanksgiving Day Holiday. 

Regular hours for all offices will resume Monday, November 29.

All Geary County Offices will be closed on Thursday, November 25, and Friday, November 26, 2021 in observance of the Thanksgiving Day Holiday. Regular hours for all offices will resume Monday, November 29.

The annual Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade presented by KJCK begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday. The parade route begins in the parking lot at the old Junction City High School, proceeds down Eisenhower, turns east on 6th Street, goes downtown and goes a short distance north on North Washington Street to 8th Street.

According to Dawn Stephens, Chamber of Commerce Member Relations Director, as of Monday there were 37 entries in the parade, and more can be accepted if there is interest in participating. "We'll take entries all the way up until Wednesday. "

Stephens loves the spirit of the Christmas parade. "I love how many people come out to it, but I also love the fact that all the entries are really Christmas themed. We have lit up floats, we have tons of children on these entries on these floats walking around. It's just a great all-around event for our community."

The theme for the parade is "Christmas at the Movies." Activities will come to a conclusion when Santa Claus and Mayor Jeff Underhill flip a switch turning on the holiday lights in Heritage Park.&nbsp;

The parade will be broadcast on 107.9 FM / 1420 KJCK AM.

Sundown Salute Chair Michelle Stimatze announced last week that the 2022 Fourth of July celebration would be held in multiple locations with some activities in Junction City, some in the City of Milford and fireworks would be shot off in the Milford Lake area.

County Commission Chair Trish Giordano said she has received several calls and a couple of texts about why the celebration was moved to Milford. "That is not a county function. Sundown Salute is its own entity, its own LLC and has its own board of directors. " Giordano added that she has referred several people to Sundown Salute committee members.

"As far as it moving out to Milford I do have my concerns electricity-wise and size-wise but if they've already checked that out and have that all taken care of, I am excited about Foghat. I do like them."

According to the Geary County Historical Society newsletter thanks to community donations the restoration of the St. Joseph Church in the eastern part of the county has been taking off during the past year.&nbsp;

A leak along the tower is being repaired and fresh pavement has been laid at the front entrance. The primary improvement is that for the first time since it was built in 1910 the church has electricity. That project was completed by D.T. Electric and included clearing trees, running line underground to keep the Church's historic appearance, and installing lighting inside the church.

With electricity, the hope is to continue renovating the interior of the building. Donations are accepted. Just note that it is for the Church and the Historical Society will ensure that is how the money is spent.&nbsp;

You can view the changes during Acoustic Junction on Dec. 10 at 6:30 p.m. and listen to live music inside the church.

Command Sgt. Maj. Ricky Jackson said the troops wanted to volunteer and help Society of the 1st Infantry Division Director Phyllis Fitzgerald and the " City of Junction City set up the garlands and lights on the poles ( street lights ) to light up the city for the holidays."

Colonel Richard Ikena said the headquarters of Division Artillery volunteered with the 1st Infantry Division Society to help with the decorations for Main Street in Junction City. "We've got a great partnership with Junction City. We appreciate everything the community does for us. So this is just a little way for us to give back."

Christmas decorations go up downtown

Junction City Public Works Director Ray Ibarra has announced that there will not be any trash/garbage pick-up by the City of Junction City on Thursday, November 25th due to the Thanksgiving Holiday.

However, trash/garbage pick-up will be picked up the next workday as follows:

Thursday’s pickup day will be Friday, November 26th

Friday’s pickup day will be Saturday, November 27th

In order to ensure pick-up, your trash should be set out by 6 AM, Friday morning.

Carts should be removed from the curb-alley by the following day of their scheduled pick up. Example: Thursday’s pickup will need to be set out by 6 AM Friday morning and removed by 6 AM Saturday morning.

Junction City Public Works releases Thanksgiving sanitation schedule

RILEY COUNTY—A Manhattan man was injured in an accident just before 3:30a.m. Sunday in Manhattan.

A 2016 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Isaac Espurvoa, 38, Manhattan, was westbound in the 4200 Block of Anderson Avenue and struck the median, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The motorcycle&nbsp; hen crossed both westbound lanes and hit the outside curb. EMS transportd Espurvoa&nbsp; to Via Christ. He was later air-lifted to Stormont Vail in Topeka for treatment of major head injuries.

The RCPD released no additional details Monday.

Manhattan man airlifted to hospital after motorcycle crash

RILEY COUNTY —Just before 8p.m. Sunday, Riley County Police arrested 38-year-old Kenneth Durell Dotson&nbsp;for multiple counts of stalking, protection order violations, and interference with a law enforcement officer.&nbsp;

Police say Dotson’s current arrest and charges&nbsp;stem from&nbsp;his&nbsp;October 12&nbsp;arrest&nbsp;in connection with a violent attack at&nbsp;a&nbsp;Dairy Queen&nbsp;in Manhattan.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On October 12, the police arrested Dotson and Cornelius Lee Sisson,&nbsp;37,&nbsp;both of Manhattan,&nbsp;after they&nbsp;reportedly&nbsp;forced their way&nbsp;into the Dairy Queen&nbsp;at 1015 N. Third Street&nbsp;and chased a man and woman outside before assaulting them with a weapon.&nbsp;

Police arrested Dotson at his home at 12:14&nbsp;Saturday morning, October 12. He&nbsp;was charged&nbsp;with&nbsp;domestic battery, battery, aggravated assault, criminal damage to property, violation of a protection order and aggravated burglary.&nbsp;&nbsp;

At the time of the Sunday night incident, Dotson was free on a $50,000 bond posted October 20.&nbsp;Following his release, Dotson was issued a protection order banning&nbsp;contant&nbsp;with witnesses.&nbsp;

Authorities&nbsp;had recently&nbsp;taken&nbsp;multiple&nbsp;reports of Dotson stalking&nbsp;and contacting&nbsp;witnesses from the October 12&nbsp;attack. Dotson is scheduled for a December 7 hearing in&nbsp;Riley County District Court&nbsp;for the October 12 case.&nbsp;

Students are recognized for their help with a Veterans tribute

Kim Baldwin, McPherson County farmer Earlier this summer after we had finished harvesting our wheat crop and wrapped up planting the rest of our fall crops, my husband casually mentioned that fall harvest would take a while this year. At that time, we had a lot of acres of corn, soybeans and sorghum growing that would all need to be harvested before the end of the year. &nbsp; As the summer transitioned to fall, the machines were brought out of the sheds, and I mentally prepared myself for the long harvest ahead.&nbsp; &nbsp; While the summer wheat harvest for us is an incredibly busy two-week stretch requiring our undivided time and effort to get the grain out of the fields, our fall harvest is much more drawn out.&nbsp;I generally describe the summer wheat harvest as a sprint, whereas fall harvest is definitely a marathon.&nbsp; &nbsp; As August rolled into September, my family transitioned into the long days of fall harvest. September moved into October, and the combines and grain cart continued to traverse the dirt roads to the next fields awaiting their harvest while our trucks methodically delivered the grain to local elevators. Lower temperatures and less daylight ushered October out and we settled into a colder November while the harvest continued. &nbsp; The food delivered to the fields for the noon and evening meals were intentionally warmer than the meals we started out with just a few, long months ago. The shorts and T-shirts some of us wore at the start of fall harvest have been traded in for coveralls and sweatshirts. The air conditioning in the combine was turned off and the seat warmer turned on. Satellite radio tuned to baseball and football broadcasts earlier in the season now occasionally plays Christmas music. &nbsp; Yes, this year’s fall harvest absolutely fits that “marathon” description. But my family has much to be thankful for today as we will not be in the field this Thanksgiving. Our crew has crossed that finish line and this year’s harvest is now complete! &nbsp; We have wrapped up this year’s long harvest with the help of many hands who dedicated their days and nights to keeping the machines and trucks moving the grain out of fields. Our crew remained safe and healthy during these long days and nights that easily and often become a blur over a three-month period. Our days were long, yet productive, and harvest was bountiful. We have so much to be thankful for this year. &nbsp; And much like someone who has just completed another marathon, we will now rest and recover before preparing for the next race that’ll be here before we know it. Until then, we will enjoy each other’s company and be thankful for all that we’ve been afforded.

The Marathon of Fall

So far this year there have been 144 occurrences of theft from a motor vehicle in Junction City.&nbsp; Police Chief John Lamb has compared that number with the pre-COVID 2019 year when there were 55 thefts from motor vehicles at this point in the year. Compared to 2019 there has been a 171% increase in theft from motor vehicles this year.&nbsp;

Lamb did report, however, that theft from motor vehicles is a part one property crime alongside other crimes such as burglary, shoplifting, theft from a&nbsp; building and motor vehicle theft. Comparing the numbers of this entire category from 2019 to 2021 there has been an overall decrease of three percent in those crimes.

Lamb noted that while the crime of theft from a motor vehicle has increased, overall there is less property crime this year compared to the last normal year that occurred.

JCPD has made several arrests recently, and those individuals are suspected of committing a large number of these thefts. October has the highest number of thefts in 2021 but those arrests were made at the end of the month. November is on track to have less than half the number of thefts from motor vehicles compared to October.

Through all the cases officers worked this year, 95% of all the vehicle that fell victim to thefts were left unlocked. Police are advising the community to double-check to ensure that you have locked your vehicle. They also recommend that people not leave valuable items visible in their cars, such as phones, wallets, purses or money.

JCPD is working with their crime analyst to identify patterns, series and trends when it comes to this and other crimes to develop plans to increase patrol and awareness.&nbsp; Through the analysis of crime it appears the thefts occurred all over the community, but in 95% of the cases, the victim's vehicle was left unlocked. JCPD is focusing on increasing patrol in areas where cars were recently victimized.

Theft from motor vehicles increases in Junction City

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (Nov. 19, 2021) — Hy-Vee, Inc. has announced that free Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Janssen (J&amp;J) COVID-19 vaccine booster doses are now available to all individuals ages 18 and older at Hy-Vee Pharmacy locations across its eight-state region.

The U.S. Food &amp; Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend a booster dose for Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccine recipients ages 18 and older at least 6 months after their second vaccine dose, and a booster dose for Janssen (J&amp;) vaccine recipients ages 18 and older at least 2 months after their first vaccine dose. Patients can schedule their COVID-19 vaccination in advance by visiting <a href="http://www.hy-vee.com/covidvaccine">www.hy-vee.com/covidvaccine</a>.

The booster vaccines are free to all eligible patients, regardless of their insurance coverage. Eligible individuals may choose which vaccine they receive as a booster dose providing they follow the booster timeline of their primary vaccine manufacturer (Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna: at least 6 months after the second dose; Janssen: at least 2 months after the second dose).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Currently, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine primary series (doses 1 and 2) is authorized for individuals 12 years of age and older. The second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine should be administered at least 21 days after the first dose. However, a booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is ONLY available for those individuals ages 18 and older, and should be administered at least 6 months after the second dose.

Currently, the Moderna vaccine primary series (doses 1 and 2) is authorized for individuals 18 years of age and older. The second dose of the Moderna vaccine should be administered at least 28 days after the first dose. A booster dose of the Moderna vaccine should be administered at least 6 months after the second dose.

Currently, the Janssen (J&amp;) primary dose is authorized for individuals 18 years of age and older. A booster dose of the J&amp;J vaccine should be administered at least 2 months after the primary dose.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (Nov. 19, 2021) — Hy-Vee, Inc. has announced that free Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Janssen (J&amp;J) COVID-19 vaccine booster doses are now available to all individuals ages 18 and older at Hy-Vee Pharmacy locations across its eight-state region.The U.S. Food &amp; Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend a booster dose for Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccine recipients ages 18 and older at least 6 months after their second vaccine dose, and a booster dose for Janssen (J&amp;) vaccine recipients ages 18 and older at least 2 months after their first vaccine dose. Patients can schedule their COVID-19 vaccination in advance by visiting <a href="http://www.hy-vee.com/covidvaccine">www.hy-vee.com/covidvaccine</a>.The booster vaccines are free to all eligible patients, regardless of their insurance coverage. Eligible individuals may choose which vaccine they receive as a booster dose providing they follow the booster timeline of their primary vaccine manufacturer (Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna: at least 6 months after the second dose; Janssen: at least 2 months after the second dose).&nbsp;&nbsp;Currently, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine primary series (doses 1 and 2) is authorized for individuals 12 years of age and older. The second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine should be administered at least 21 days after the first dose. However, a booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is ONLY available for those individuals ages 18 and older, and should be administered at least 6 months after the second dose.Currently, the Moderna vaccine primary series (doses 1 and 2) is authorized for individuals 18 years of age and older. The second dose of the Moderna vaccine should be administered at least 28 days after the first dose. A booster dose of the Moderna vaccine should be administered at least 6 months after the second dose.Currently, the Janssen (J&amp;) primary dose is authorized for individuals 18 years of age and older. A booster dose of the J&amp;J vaccine should be administered at least 2 months after the primary dose.There is a Hy-Vee outlet in Manhattan.

Retired Sgt. Major James A. Sands received a Quilt of Valor Saturday in front of the Buffalo Soldier Memorial in Junction City. Sands spent 30 years in the military. This quilt meant a great deal to him. "More than anything than I could have imagined. It's special. I can say I do a few things, I don't know if I do enough to deserve this but people in the community think so, so&nbsp; I'm quite honored."

Following a 30-year military career Sands was actively involved in numerous community activities and boards. That service ranged from time on such boards as the Junction City Commission to the Juneteenth Committee and Fair Board. He was also involved in supporting the Historical Society.

He remembered his interest in community service stemmed from his childhood when he watched his father Jim E. Sands. He instilled it in us all. We grew up on a small farm ( Cooksville, Maryland ) and we fed the community. We had vegetables, we had cows, hogs, chickens and when people couldn't eat we fed them."

The goal of the Quilt of Valor Foundation is to honor and cover service members and veterans who have been touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. The Quilt was presented on Saturday by Donna Martinson with the Central Flint Hills Area Quilts of Valor group and Phyllis Fitzgerald, who nominated Jim A. Sands for the honor.

RILEY COUNTY—Authorities are working to determine the cause of a house fire in Manhattan.

Just after 5:3 p.m. Saturday, the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to 2025 Tecumseh Road and found a single-story house that had fire coming out of the front and rear of the building, according to&nbsp;Deputy Chief Ryan Almes.

Crews made an aggressive attack on the fire, completed a search, and controlled the fire within 20 minutes.&nbsp; One occupant, who was outside of the structure upon fire department arrival, was transported by Riley County EMS to Via Christi for smoke inhalation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

One firefighter was injured on the scene and was transported to Via Christi by Riley County EMS and was treated and released.&nbsp; &nbsp; The house is a one-story house that had five occupants. Loss is estimated at $80,000 to contents and $115,000 to the structure. The owner is listed as Randy Staulbaumer of Seneca, KS.&nbsp; The home suffered exterior fire damage estimated at $2500.&nbsp; The fire cause is under investigation at this time. While on scene at the Tecumseh Road fire, crews responded to 1327 Houston Street, Apt. 2, for a report of a structure fire.&nbsp; Crews found a small fire in a basement stairwell and extinguished it.&nbsp; Damage to the structure was estimated at $500.&nbsp; No injuries were reported.&nbsp; The fire cause was improperly disposed of smoking materials.

According to K-State Today, the Kansas State University Marching band will present its annual concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, in Ahearn Field House.&nbsp;The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert will highlight this season's pregame show, halftimes and cheers. Also featured will be the Classy Cats, Color Guard and twirlers. Band merchandise will be available to purchase for K-State Christmas presents.
