TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A woman was taken to a local hospital early Wednesday after the car she was driving slid off rain-slickened Interstate 70 in west Topeka, authorities said.

The crash was reported around 7:15 a.m. Wednesday on westbound I-70, just west of S.W. Gage Boulevarad.

Kansas Highway Patrol troopers said the woman was driving a white Chevrolet Impala west on I-70 when the car hit standing water on the roadway.

The car then slid off the right -- or north -- side of the roadway and went down an incline before it came to rest with its front end in a tree line.

The driver was transported to a local hospital by American Medical Response ambulance with injuries not believed to be serious.

Traffic entering westbound I-70 from southbound US-75 highway was backed up for about 15 minutes as crews responded to the scene.

Aging Well and Wheels of H.O.P.E both have received $1,000 donations from Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market to further support their missions.

Aging Well is a non-profit organization focused on building a new senior living campus on Spring Valley Rd. The Aging Well campus will provide long term care in a small home design. The small homes will offer each elder a private room and private bath surrounding an open floor plan with kitchen, dining, and living room. The culture will focus on family style living rather than institutional living. Assisted living apartments will also be built for those needing less care but interested in receiving the benefits of living in a senior community.&nbsp;

 Aging Well will add 40 new jobs to Junction City and keep an estimated $1,320,000 in revenue related to senior services that is leaving the county. Aging Well is currently more than halfway to meeting their $3.5 million fundraising goal and plans to begin construction late fall.

Wheels of H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Eat) is also a non-profit organization created to provide supplemental food to chronically hungry children in Geary County, while removing many of the common barriers encountered by low-income families, including transportation. 

Each month Wheels of H.O.P.E. delivers food to residential areas within the community identified as having a high percentage of food insecure families. These families are invited based on recommendations received from staff members in Geary County USD #475. Research states that children who receive adequate nutrition perform better academically in school and experience more positive health and wellness outcomes. Parents who are able to provide their families with good nutrition are better equipped to focus on pursuing more positive outcomes for their families. With community support Wheels of H.O.P.E works to help combat the issue of food insecurity in Geary County.

Junction City Commissoner NateButler got involved in the community while on duty as a soldier at Irwin Army Hospital. After leaving the Army he served four years on the USD 475 Board of Education and was eventually “called” to the ministry. He and the family moved to Kentucky to start a church, but again returned to Junction City when the Butler children decided they wanted to move back to this area. “We love Junction City”, he said.

Butler served as the speaker for the Breakfast Optimist Club meeting. He told them that he was “proud of the way Allen Dinkel, City Manager, and the staff have worked so hard and been so successful in paying down the city debt, which has been a focus for several years.

The mill levy has stayed the same; sales tax revenue has dramatically increased in the past sixteen months; the Downtown Revitalization Program has given a boost to the business district; there are new business coming into the area and there are plans being put in place to get even more foot traffic into the downtown area.&nbsp;

The JC Breakfast Club will also purchase t-shirts for the Exceptional Family Members Program’s Special Needs Rodeo to be held July 17 from 10 until Noon at the 4-H Center on Spring Valley Road. The Rodeo is free to all children with special needs four years and older. Activities will include face painting, hand-rocked bull riding and arena rides. Series of blood drives are scheduled in the region

Sundown Salute will include the traditional&nbsp; parade at 10 a.m. Saturday. 

Tricia Verschage Parade Coordinator,said that the grand marshal for that event will not be an individual this year but a sign in the grand marshal vehicle. "Not only are we saluting America but we are saluting our front line workers so our doctors, our nurses, our law enforcement, the firefighters, the teachers, our store workers, factory workers, our food workers." Vershage added that basically anyone who had to go to work every day are the people being honored.

There are expected to be about 45 entries in the parade, with some of those entries having multiple vehicles. The parade route will run from the parking lot at Junction City High School down Eisenhower to 6th Street and then east to 6th and Adams before it turns on Adams and goes north to the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library.

The parade will be broadcast by 107.9 FM / 1420 KJCK and shown via live stream on JC Post.com.

Grand Marshals for the Sundown Salute parade will be different

MANHATTAN, Kan. — In 2015, Dan McDonald began a small canning operation out of his garage. Today, he and his team at Bev-Hub celebrated the official ribbon cutting of a brand new facility just outside of Manhattan.&nbsp;

According to McDonald, the operation will bring roughly 37 new jobs to Manhattan at the start, but casually add more positions as the operation grows.&nbsp;

"I've always been a huge fan of Manhattan, the community here, it's a very positive community," said McDonald. "So, when we had the opportunity to look for a new production facility, we were led to this facility here. So we came to Manhattan and did some studies about the logistics and whatnot, around the country, and being right smack in the middle of the U.S. turned out to be a real blessing."

The event saw a large turn out inside of the warehouse floor at Bev-Hub's new home at 5960 Dry Hop Circle in the Manhattan Business Park. The star-studded guest list featured multiple media outlets, city leaders, and even Kansas Governor Laura Kelly.&nbsp;

"Not only is it a new company coming here to Manhattan, but it's also beyond state-of-the-art," said Kelly. "That's what's so exciting about what's happening in Kansas right now, is that we're growing... robustly."&nbsp;

Bev-Hub's fit in Manhattan is one of many levels. The location is a plus, but the availability of Kansas State University for staffing, testing, and the many needs of a facility of this kind, it was just another added bonus for Bev-Hub to select Manhattan for its expansion.&nbsp;

"This is a good thing. It's a real product of our economic development program. We've been running it for years. We've had some failures, but many successes," said Manhattan Mayor Wynn Butler. "What was sad was one of our failures took place here, (Bev-Hub's new location) so it's absolutely fantastic they were able to repurpose the facility and bring in some more jobs, and they'll probably expand in the future."&nbsp;

Bev-Hub's facility cans a variety of products such as water, cold brew coffee, tea, energy drinks, and more, and is an expansion on its current facility in Wichita. According to McDonald, the facility will likely be sold out within the next six months, and is in preliminary stages of looking to add an additional facility or to expand upon the Manhattan facility.&nbsp;

McDonald also added that per shift they currently produce around 125,000-150,000 cans per day.&nbsp;

"Three years ago, we had hoped that we'd be able to fill 100,000 cans our first year. I did that yesterday here," said McDonald.

He said the crop has been fairly good. "We had some disease issues with all that rain and cloudy weather back in May. The rain was good, the excessive rain does cause a lot of disease issues and that has impacted some people."

Otte noted that it's typical with the harvest beginning along the river and then the outer lying portions of the county to begin. "Countywide we're probably looking at about 50% of the wheat harvested by now. Some people are almost done, others are just getting started."

The most recent was reported at 12:09 p.m. Tuesday. According to the USGS, the quake had a 2.9 magnitude and originated around 7 miles North of Ellis, KS.

The second struck at 7:23 p.m. Monday two miles east of Milton, KS.

Milton is about 35 miles southwest of Wichita.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Over $6 billion has been invested in Kansas from new businesses.

Governor Laura Kelly says since she took office in January of 2019, over $6 billion new business dollars have been invested in Kansas and 26,000 new jobs have been created.

“This administration has prioritized rebuilding our state’s economic foundation and supporting services that make Kansas a place where families and businesses want to be – our continued success is proof those efforts are paying off,” Governor Kelly said. “For the third year in a row, we fully funded our schools, we’ve expanded access to broadband to thousands of families and businesses, and more than 130 long-overdue road and bridge projects have been greenlit. These actions, along with the Department of Commerce’s recruitment work, have shown prospective companies why Kansas is a premier business destination. As we once again approach record-breaking business investment in 2021, my team will harness this momentum to create jobs and support businesses that choose to locate to or expand in our state.”

According to Gov. Kelly, Tuesday’s announcement comes after the state saw a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bea.gov/news/2021/gross-domestic-product-state-1st-quarter-2021" target="_blank">7.3% growth in Gross Domestic Product</a>, received the&nbsp;<a href="https://governor.kansas.gov/kansas-wins-prestigious-2021-gold-shovel-award-for-economic-development-excellence/" target="_blank">Gold Shovel Award</a>, was recognized as a&nbsp;<a href="https://governor.kansas.gov/kansas-ranked-as-number-one-business-climate-in-west-north-central-region/" target="_blank">top business climate</a>&nbsp;in the West North Central region of the U.S. and is one of three of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/health-coronavirus-pandemic-business-c460200f8cf235b859cce8ba2e6dbf1b" target="_blank">top states to report higher employment</a>&nbsp;in rural communities.

Gov. Kelly said surpassing the $6 billion mark shows the speed of the state’s economic growth.

According to the Kansas Governor, the state has helped secure almost $2.4 billion in new business investments in 2021. In 2020, she said the state had its most successful economic development year ever with over $2.5 billion invested by new businesses. However, she said the state did not pass the $2 billion mark until November of 2020.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — The government’s latest crop snapshot Monday shows the Kansas winter wheat harvest is running slower than usual for this time of year.

The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported that about 41% of the state’s wheat has been cut. That is behind both the 44% at this time last year and the 48% five-year average. The report reflects crop conditions as of Sunday and comes amid recent rains that have kept many combines out of fields.

The agency also reported that 83% of the wheat had already matured. It rated the condition of the crop still in the ground as 12% excellent, 50% good, 25% fair and 13% as poor or very poor.

Planting for two other major Kansas crops also is nearly finished with 95% of the soybeans and 94% of the sorghum now seeded.

The state’s corn crop is also mostly in good shape with just 6% rated as poor or very poor.

Report: Kansas wheat harvest going slower than usual so far

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Fourth of July is this weekend and while it may be a fun holiday for people, a Kansas State University veterinarian said that’s not the case for some pets.

“This holiday is often a time filled with fear and anxiety for some pets and it can also be a dangerous time for them as well,” said&nbsp;Susan Nelson, clinical professor at the K-State Veterinary Health Center.

Nelson encourages pet owners to speak to their veterinarian now about medication options if needed, since the majority of fireworks will be set off over the weekend this year when the vet’s office is likely closed.

She also offers several tips to keep pets safe this holiday:

Nelson said keeping pets indoors or on a leash when outside can help keep them from getting lost. She recommends making sure your pet has some type of ID, such as a tag and/or microchip, in case it should get lost.

“The sound of fireworks can make some pets runoff in an attempt to get away from the noise,” Nelson continued saying, “In fact, this is the time of year with the highest incidence of runaway pets, so be sure to keep them secure.”

Besides getting lost, Nelson said there is also the risk of pets getting hit by a car because their fear of fireworks will make them less observant of oncoming traffic.

It’s also important to keep fireworks and other dangerous items out of a pet’s reach.

Nelson said, “Even if your dog is not bothered by fireworks, it is still subject to being burned or injured by fireworks if it gets too close or attempts to retrieve one that has been ignited. Many fireworks also contain toxic chemicals if ingested.”

K-State veterinarian offers pet safety tips ahead of Fourth of July holiday

It will be scaled back from past years but there will still be a Sundown Salute celebration in Junction City. The big day is Saturday, July 3, when the 5K and 10K Freedom Run begins at 7 a.m.. That will be followed by the annual parade which begins at 10 a.m. at Junction City High School, travels down Eisenhower to 6th Street and then goes east to 6th and Adams. The parade will be broadcast by 107.9 FM / 1420 KJCK.

The Veterans Ceremony will begin at noon in front of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Heritage Park. There will be a car show from 3-5 p.m. on Caroline Ave. on the west side of the city. Tribute group performances will include Ridin' the Storm Out, a tribute to REO Speedwagon from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Bob Jovi, a tribute to Bon Jovi, from 8:30 to 10 p.m. in the parking lot of the Bird Dog Saloon adjacent to Caroline Ave.

There will be two carnival rides and a funnel cake trailer provided by Ottaway Amusements that will be set up this week on Jefferson Street downtown, between 6th and 7th Streets.

Board of Education members in USD 475 have approved a facility feasibility study that also includes an action plan for Franklin Elementary School in Junction City.

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Reginald Eggleston, told the board with&nbsp; the feasiblity plan that Franklin and other facilities will be assessed. "Franklin Elementary School will be looked upon as an open building but we will look at vacating immediately students and staff and relocating to another school."

Eggleston stated that the statutory process is not required because Franklin will not be closed and the District wants to conduct a feasibility study that leads to more efficient utilization of facilities. "In the meantime the District is relocating staff and students out of Franklin Elementary School. Franklin will be part of the feasibility study for repurposing and multiple options are to be considered in the study which might include functions operating out of District facilities."

Teacher shortages are a problem for USD 475, as is the case across Kansas. There is also concern about the future enrollment impact on schools from the 1st Infantry Division, 1st Brigade nine-month deployment.

Possible methods of addressing teacher shortages in the District could range from long term substitutes to combining classrooms with low student enrollment. Final decisions have not been made.

During the feasibility study early childhood facilities and support service facilities, particularly the Dixon Center, will be among those reviewed. The study is expected to take 90 to 120 days. None of the buildings in USD 475 will be closed.

USD 475 prepares to relocate Franklin Elementary School students and staff

Responding to the needs of Kansas families, program changes are coming to Rock Springs camps&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Over the last 75 years, thousands of Kansas 4-H’ers have enjoyed the traditional three-day, four-night Rock Springs Ranch experience of a county-wide camp that included activities such as horseback riding, archery, swimming, crafts, campfires, talent shows and leadership experiences. &nbsp;

Changes to expand and diversify camp program options are coming next year, according to Kansas 4-H Foundation president Jake Worcester.&nbsp;

Beginning in 2022, parents and their youth will be able to select from an expanded calendar of camp experiences.&nbsp;

“In the past, families were given one set of dates that their youth could attend camp,” Worcester said. “Looking ahead, there will be options for a traditional experience as well as longer experiences and additional leadership development opportunities &nbsp;

Through these experiences, Worcester said, he hopes youth from age seven through their college years will stay connected to 4-H activities and development opportunities Rock Springs Ranch. &nbsp;

“Next year families will have 7 to 8 weeks that they can choose from for a camp experience,” Worcester said. Those new dates and registration information will be posted on the&nbsp;<a href="https://rockspringsranch.org/" target="_blank">Rock Springs Ranch website</a>&nbsp;on Sept. 1.&nbsp;

Along with the scheduling changes, there will also be program changes to ensure a high-quality camp experience, said Wade Weber, Kansas 4-H program leader.&nbsp;

“We’ve looked to our peers in the camping industry and monitored the landscape of our professional programming,” he said. “There have been changes in youth development when it comes to creating a safe and supportive learning environment for young people.” &nbsp;

A task force has been working for more than two years to implement purposeful changes to enable 4-H youth to have the highest-quality camp experience possible, Weber said. &nbsp;

Fourth of July may not be the best day for your dog

Work has been underway on a new substation for the Geary County Sheriff's Department near Milford Reservoir. Trish Giordano, County Commission Chair, said Monday that the Department is supposed to receive the substation keys on July 9.

The substation, located on Rural Water District 4 property near the lake, will host dive team and marine units.

New sheriff department substation is nearly complete

WAKEFIELD, Kan. (WIBW) - One person was taken to the hospital following a single-vehicle crash early Monday in Geary County, authorities said.

The crash was reported at 12:03 a.m. at US-77 and K-82 highways. The location was about four miles east of Wakefield and 11 miles north of Junction City.

According to the Geary County Sheriff’s Office, Jose F. Alvarenga of Junction City, was driving a 2008 GMC Acadia sport utility east on K-82 when he fell asleep.

The GMC then crashed in the east ditch on US-77.

There was no report of an injury to Alvarenga.

A passenger, who wasn’t identified, was transported to Geary Community Hospital in Junction City for treatment of injuries. There was no immediate report of the passenger’s condition.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Topeka Police Department says the skull of a human was found along side the Kaw River in Topeka.

Spokesperson Gretchen Spiker says the skull was found Sunday within Topeka City limits.

Spiker says the remains will be sent to a forensic anthropologist for identification, which could take several months to a year.

Trish Gordano, County Commission Chair, said 80 properties are scheduled to be up for sale at Jay Brown Real Estate&nbsp; and Auction Service at 2323 North Jackson on Wednesday beginning at 10 a.m. "They are listed on our county web site and there's actually a map of them and all the addresses."

The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday that about 41% of the state’s wheat has been cut. That is behind both the 44% at this time last year and the 48% five-year average for this date. The report reflects crop conditions as of Sunday and comes amid recent rains that have kept many combines out of fields. The agency also reported that 83% of the wheat had already matured.

MANHATTAN —Law enforcement authorities are investigating vandalism at Manhattan Country Club.

Just after 8 a.m. Sunday, police filed a report for criminal damage to property at the club the 1500 block of N. 10th Street in Manhattan when they reported an unknown suspect vandalized the pool with graffiti and damaged pool chairs, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $800. Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
